Department of Psychology
Current research opportunities.
For students who plan to pursue a Doctoral Degree in Psychology after Lehigh, gaining experience in research is one of the most important experiences outside of the classroom to help in achieving this goal.
The research process cannot be mastered through formal class instruction alone. To a large extent, research is based on tacit knowledge, i.e., knowledge that is not formally expressed, but based on practices and judgments that are linked to particular domains within psychology. Apprentice relationships in which the student is guided by someone who has mastered these practices are a critical part of scientific training.
The Psychology Department at Lehigh is fortunate in having a faculty active in research and well-equipped labs that implement a variety of contemporary research practices.
Students who are interested in working in a lab should contact the faculty member who supervises the lab to discuss research opportunities. Students can enroll for credit in Psyc 161, Supervised Research, which may be repeated once. Students whose interest in research is stimulated by this experience are encouraged to consult with their faculty research supervisor about enrolling in Psyc 393, Independent Research. This course is intended for students who have become familiar enough with field specific research practices that they are capable of conceiving and implementing simple research projects of their own. Psyc 393 may also be repeated once for credit.
Each semester majors receive a preregistration package which includes information about particular research projects which have openings for undergraduate research assistants. Students interested in gaining research experience should immediately contact faculty if they are interested in applying for one of these openings. The current semester’s research opportunity list is also available here .

Research Experience for Undergraduates at Lehigh
Lehigh University truly embraces the concept of “hands-on learning.” Beginning as early as their first year on campus, Mountain Hawks can work on both faculty- and student-led research projects, or even independent projects, sometimes completely funded by the university.
Whether you’re a prospective student interested in environmental engineering or experimental physics or a senior theatrical arts major with a big idea, there is a team at Lehigh looking to give you the chance to get involved in tangible ways and to become a Future Maker .
If you are a first or second-year student sitting in a lecture and something that your professor says strikes you as extremely interesting, tell them ; you never know how you may be able to get involved in their research. This advice comes from Associate Dean for the College of Arts and Sciences Kelly Austin, who encourages students to “take a risk” and apply for the significant amount of funding and grants available to them for any kind of research, not just “traditional” research in a lab. There are grants available for theatrical studies or environmental research done by students of any age or cohort.
Once you determine what area of interest you would like to research, the university’s internal funding team can begin to audit your ideas or research to determine the type of funding you qualify for.
In what she referred to as the “hallmark” of the College of Arts and Sciences, Austin said Lehigh’s arsenal of flexible financial resources and availability of facilities for undergraduate students is nearly incomparable and completely “unique.” While you are engrossed in learning and exploring new, unexplained phenomena in a lab, you might discover a previously unknown passion or area of interest!
As a first- or second-year student involved in research, you will be working with a faculty member as your mentor, providing opportunities to connect with faculty and even, down the road, open doors to other opportunities and build the confidence to pursue them. Austin said she would love to see more students apply for these opportunities because “you’re never too young to get involved” in research at Lehigh.

- Lehigh University Extends Partnership with Nasdaq Entrepreneurial Center
You are here
By Anne Wood
Lehigh@NasdaqCenter (LNC), a collaboration between a top private research university in the country and an independent nonprofit organisation established by the Nasdaq Foundation in San Francisco, is dedicated to supporting budding student entrepreneurs. LNC offers programmes that match interns with startups globally and engages in entrepreneurship research that frequently features in leading national business news outlets.
“This partnership has enabled us to serve the needs of students and the startup community while attempting to perfect the art and science of entrepreneurship,” said Samantha Dewalt, Managing Director of Lehigh@NasdaqCenter. “We’ve seen exciting growth in demand for our programs from undergraduate and graduate students across the university, as well as increased demand from startup companies looking for top talent. Now, under our new arrangement, we’re going to take our successes at combining the scholarly with the practitioner to the next level.”
Since its inception in 2017, Lehigh@NasdaqCenter has impacted over 1,400 students through its collaborative efforts. In 2023 alone, its diverse array of programmes, courses, and workshops reached over 400 students and assisted 150 early-stage companies. Looking ahead, LNC is set to expand its startup internship programmes, aiming to benefit an even larger number of students and startups with its offerings over the next three years.
This expansion comes at a crucial time, as entrepreneurship experiences a boom in the US and the demand for entrepreneurial education reaches new heights. From the beginning, Lehigh@NasdaqCenter has been a champion for broadening access to entrepreneurship and instilling the belief that everyone, from corporate executives to independent contractors and aspiring startup founders, can and should adopt an entrepreneurial mindset. Among the students who have engaged with entrepreneurship through LNC, 47% belong to ethnic minority groups, 50% are women, and they come from 74 different fields of study.
The partnership benefits extend beyond the students; early-stage startups also gain from the fresh, innovative, and diverse perspectives brought by their college student interns.
“Our collaboration with Lehigh University has enabled us to broaden our services for early-stage entrepreneurs and provide them with valuable support through the Startup Internship Programme," explains Nicola Corzine, the Founding CEO and Executive Director of the Nasdaq Entrepreneurial Center. "This endeavour has afforded us a significant vantage point into the transformative power of entrepreneurial learning experiences, which are instrumental in shaping the future landscape of education and work. Moreover, it consistently informs our actionable research in entrepreneurship education."
Lehigh@NasdaqCenter’s research and thought leadership – for example, on the 11 key attributes of an entrepreneurial mindset, how start-ups can better manage and mentor interns, and how entrepreneurs can be more emotionally intelligent – has appeared in publications like Fortune, Fast Company and Startups Magazine.
LNC continues to utilise and develop relationships and experiences that create connections for students with Silicon Valley while also being rooted in San Francisco's financial district - further establishing Lehigh's presence on the West Coast.
LNC will break ground on new space in San Francisco this Spring, in preparation to welcome the 2024 summer cohort of Startup Academy interns who will live in San Francisco and work for Silicon Valley-based startups. As part of the 10-week summer immersion, the students will be required to complete a full-time internship along with a course of study on entrepreneurship led by Lehigh faculty, while working closely with mentors across industries to hone their professional development.
“Lehigh’s physical presence in San Francisco has become a second home to some of our students - a space to not only learn about entrepreneurship but also to experience it firsthand,” Lehigh Provost Nathan Urban said. “Our West Coast programs have turned out to be transformative experiences that enhance our approach to serving our students, alumni, and the startup community.

Innovate! Celebrate! event shows interconnectedness of Lehigh entrepreneurial, international programs
International students presented at the annual Innovate! Celebrate! Entrepreneurship Awards Dinner, and alumni who have participated in international programs also participated.
The entrepreneurial accomplishments of Lehigh University students and faculty were celebrated during the annual Innovate! Celebrate! Entrepreneurship Awards Dinner hosted on April 16 by the Baker Institute for Entrepreneurship, Creativity & Innovation and Lehigh’s newly-created Office of Entrepreneurship .
Several students or alumni who participated in the event were international students, or have participated in the programs offered through the university’s Office of International Affairs (OIA), demonstrating the interconnectedness between entrepreneurial and international programs at Lehigh.
“We are always excited to celebrate all Lehigh entrepreneurs at this event every year and are particularly proud to see so many of this year's participants incorporating knowledge, skills, and attitudes they developed during their international experiences into their entrepreneurial pursuit,” said Lisa Getzler, VP, Entrepreneurship Vice Provost for Entrepreneurship at Lehigh.
The event was hosted at Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Northeastern Pennsylvania at Lehigh’s Mountaintop Campus. It opened with an Innovation Alley reception, during which 12 student venture groups showcased their work and pitched ideas to the audience to earn their investment in “Baker Bucks,” which were distributed to attendees. The team to earn the most received a cash prize and the People’s Choice Award.
After the Innovation Alley showcase, three student ventures with the most highly-developed ventures pitched their concepts during the Joan F. & John M. Thalheimer ’55 Grand Prize competition.
International Student Participants
The People’s Choice Award went to Nancy Henry-Naiho ‘27, an international undergraduate student who was born in Nigeria and has also lived in South Africa. She won for her venture, Crelet, a freelancer platform for college students that allow users to create profiles and portfolios, so various campus departments can access them and contact them for freelancing opportunities.
“Something I love about the Baker program is how inclusive it is,” said Henry-Naiho, who is studying business and economics at Lehigh. “All you really need is passion and an idea, and you can make it work here.”
Henry-Naiho was inspired to enroll at Lehigh in large part due to the Baker Institute and other entrepreneurial programs, which she first learned about from other Lehigh alumni. She said she plans to help other students as an International Orientation Leader next year, adding, “I very much think Lehigh is a globally-inclusive kind of place.”
Abylaikhan Mukhamejanov ‘27, an international student from Kazakhstan studying mechanical engineering at Lehigh, was also among the student honorees at the Innovate! Celebrate! event. He pitched his venture SkillSat , educational platform kits that allow children to build and operate small-scale satellites known as CubeSats .
Students who pitched for the aforementioned Grand Prize had previously participated in the EUREKA! Venture Program, Baker’s signature initiative for student venture founders. Mukhamejanov had done pitch events in Kazakhstan before, but he struggled with them in the U.S. at first due to differences in language and how to present to American audiences.
“Baker and the EUREKA! program helped me to boost my skills and overcome those challenges,” said Mukhamejanov, who was one of three grand prize finalists at the Innovate! Celebrate! Event, and won the Michael W. Levin Advanced Technology Competition Award. “Lehigh has a lot of great entrepreneurial resources for every stage of your startup.”
Alumni with International Experiences
In addition to the student participants, several alumni who have participated in Lehigh international programs spoke during the Innovate! Celebrate! event, including Olivia Abrams, ‘21, the co-founder & CEO of Tick Mitt ; and Taylor Pistone ‘21, who works as a technical associate at the McGovern Institute for Brain Research within MIT .
Tick Mitt is a chemical-free glove that can be used to remove loose ticks from people or pets after hiking, camping, gardening, or other outdoor activities. Abrams started developing her startup during entrepreneurship classes at Lehigh, and she benefitted from such student entrepreneurial programs as Baker, Lehigh@Nasdaqcenter , and the Lehigh Venture Lab .
She also participated in the LU/UN Partnership ’s Global PreLUsion Program, and studied abroad in Paris during the spring of 2020. Although her time there was cut short due to COVID-19, she was able to take a class about entrepreneurship and small business from a European perspective, which she said was very impactful for her.
Pistone studied electrical engineering and cognitive neuroscience at Lehigh, then got her Master of Engineering degree at the University of California . As a Lehigh student, she studied in Amsterdam through the Iacocca International Internship Program . It was her first time overseas, which she called a “very transformative experience for me, both personally and professionally.”
During the Innovate! Celebrate! event, Pistone said although she has not formed a startup or product, her entrepreneurial studies and experiences at Lehigh helped her develop a design-thinking and problem-solving mindset that is directly applicable to the work she does today at MIT.
“I’ve had an unconventional entrepreneurial journey,” she said. “An entrepreneur is not just someone who creates a new venture or company; it is someone who is identifying a problem and working to solve it. The Iacocca internship introduced me to entrepreneurship, and introduced me to how academia and industry can work together.”
Some of the other student entrepreneurs (and their ventures) who participated in the Innovate! Celebrate! event include:
- Canaan Kimball (Screenwise Eating)
- Cedrique Wafula (Qlover Technologies)
- Griffin Doherty (Paxev)
- Kathryn Keating (RenewBluSurf)
- Malik Normuradov (The Possibly)
- Miguel Vazquez (Mountain Movers Storage)
- Skyler Mott (Mark-It)

Lehigh Admits Newest Members of the Class of 2028
Admitted students come from 49 states, plus Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, and 65 countries.
Mary Ellen Alu
- Lehigh Commitment
- Diversity & Inclusion
A record number of high school students applied to Lehigh to be part of its Class of 2028, up 11% from the previous year.
It is the second consecutive year of record applications. Lehigh received 20,396 applications, compared to 18,415 applications for the Class of 2027. It also marks a nearly 35% increase in applications from two years ago, when applications numbered 15,160.
Notably, Lehigh saw a 32% increase in applications from its two Early Decision rounds over the previous year, which indicates that those students had declared Lehigh as their first choice among colleges and universities.
“It is incredibly gratifying that not only are more and more students choosing to apply to Lehigh, but that an even faster-growing population are the students who are making Lehigh their first-choice,” said Dan Warner, vice provost for admissions and financial aid.
Among admitted students, 357 students qualified for the Lehigh Commitment, which means that Lehigh will provide those students with a full tuition grant. To expand access to a Lehigh education, Lehigh committed to providing full tuition grants to all admitted and current undergraduate students from families with a household income of less than $75,000, beginning in Fall 2024.
“Lehigh sits at the intersection of excellence, access and affordability, and that word is being heard loudly and clearly among prospective students,” Warner said. "And the Lehigh Commitment has served to underscore the affordability message this year.”
The admitted students come from 49 states, plus Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, and 65 countries.
The admitted members of the Class of 2028 include:
- A student who founded "Girls who Code" at her high school
- A member of the Colorado Youth Congress who is implementing a comprehensive sex education pilot program in Colorado's largest charter school network.
- A student who traveled to Germany and completed an internship in process engineering and cybernetics
- A student who leads Feeding Philly , a non-profit that raised more than $7,500, organized over 200 workshops, recruited 500 volunteers, served over 1,500 families, and repurposed 2,500 pounds of food
- A student who led a grassroots regional water testing campaign initiated by the Local Watershed Coalition and Research Center
- A published novelist
- A six-time female national wrestling champion and three-time world medalist
- A Parliamentary Member/junior intern for Italian Parliament
- A Safe2Tell ambassador who advocates for mental health
Over the past two years, Lehigh had a nearly 500% increase in the number of merit scholarships of $15,000 a year or more offered to students from Lehigh Valley high schools, Warner said. That includes eight full-tuition merit scholarships this past year.
