Mandated Training Related to Infection Control

  • Infection Control and Barrier Precautions FAQ
  • Infection Control Approved Providers of Course Work

All dentists, dental hygienists, licensed practical nurses, optometrists, podiatrists, and registered nurses must complete course work or training appropriate to their practice regarding infection control and barrier precautions, including engineering and work controls to prevent the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the hepatitis b virus (HBV) in the course of professional practice, every four years according to Section 6505-b of the Education Law . You must attest to having completed this requirement to the State Education Department on your first licensure/registration application and at every subsequent registration.

All physicians, physician assistants, and specialist assistants must complete course work or training in accordance with Section 239 of the Public Health Law at the time of their initial licensure/registration and every four years thereafter.

Choosing a Provider

You may choose a training provider that has been approved by either the State Education Department or the Department of Health. This list of providers includes those organizations approved by the State Education Department as providers of training in infection control. Providers must use the prescribed syllabus prepared by the Department. They are required to cover, at a minimum, the seven core elements jointly approved by the State Education Department and the Department of Health, and are authorized to issue a Certification of Completion for each person completing the course work. Although most providers will present the course work or training in a classroom setting, some may offer a distance format. Dates, fees, and course length may vary from provider to provider.

The Department has approved course work for specific professional groups. Please check with the provider to determine if the course they are offering is appropriate for your profession , as some providers will offer training ONLY to certain professional groups.

To obtain a list of course work providers approved by the Department of Health (DOH) or to contact the Department of Health regarding infection control for physicians, physician assistants or specialist assistants write or call:

Bureau of Healthcare-Associated Infections

Healthcare Epidemiology and Infection Control Program New York State Department of Health

You may also find a list of approved New York State Department of Health Providers by clicking here . DOH is responsible for approving course work offered by DOH-regulated health care facilities or offered by physician or physician/specialist assistant organizations.

Documentation

  • When you have completed the required coursework or training, the approved provider will give you a Certification of Completion.
  • Please DO NOT submit this form to the State Education Department. Instead, keep the certificate in the event that you are required to submit it at a later date.
  • You must attest to having completed this requirement to the State Education Department on your first licensure/registration application and at every subsequent registration.

Physicians, Physician Assistants and Specialist Assistants

  • If you are affiliated with a hospital, please DO NOT submit this form to the Department of Health. Instead, keep the certificate in the event that you are required to submit it at a later date. It is also recommended that you file a copy with your hospital personnel office or hospital administrator. Hospitals are required to verify completion of coursework prior to credentialing physicians who wish to be affiliated.
  • If you are NOT affiliated with a hospital, you must submit the Certificate of Completion to the Department of Health at the address above. Please keep a copy for your records.

You may be eligible for exemption from the training if you can document, to the satisfaction of the Department, that there is no need for the training based on the nature of your practice.

If you wish to apply for exemption based on the nature of your practice, or if you can satisfactorily document that you have completed course work in infection control within the past four years that included the minimum information required in the New York State approved syllabus, you should indicate that you wish to apply for an exemption on the  Form 1IC  (11 KB) and submit the completed form to the New York State Education Department Office of the Professions at the address on the form. It should be noted that professionals in these fields not currently practicing in New York State but holding active New York State licenses DO NOT need to complete the infection control course work at this time. Upon resuming practice in New York State you will have 90 days to complete the training.

If you wish to apply for an exemption, you should contact the Department of Health, Bureau of Healthcare Associated Infections, at the link above. Any questions related to the Infection Control and Barrier Precautions Workshop can be sent to [email protected]

About the Healthcare Epidemiology and Infection Prevention and Control Certificate Program

The certificate is designed for masters and doctoral students at The Johns Hopkins University and junior and mid-level professionals with an interest in gaining exposure to the expertise and skills utilized by healthcare epidemiologists and infection preventionists. Healthcare epidemiologists and infection preventionists aim to prevent and control healthcare-associated infections, antimicrobial resistant and epidemiologically significant organisms and other adverse outcomes in the healthcare setting by translating research into practice.

Their expertise and activities include epidemiologic and laboratory investigation, surveillance for infections and antimicrobial resistant or significant organisms, policy development and implementation, education and information dissemination, implementation of interventions to prevent transmission or infectious complications, cost-benefit analyses of interventions, and patient-oriented research to inform and improve the science of healthcare epidemiology and infection control and to improve quality-of-care.

Infection Control Assessment and Response (ICAR)

What is an icar.

In partnership with local health jurisdictions, we provide free/non-regulatory Infection Control Assessment and Response (ICAR) consultations to long term care, dental, dialysis, and other health care settings.

Our experienced Infection Preventionists (IP) work closely with the facility and customizes the consultation to assess infection prevention strengths, opportunities on a variety of infection prevention and control topics and any areas of concern the facility has identified.

Each interaction is focused on education and offers the most up-to-date infection prevention resources. Consultations can be completed either onsite or virtually as a televisit.

Infection Prevention Staff and Resources

Our most effective resource for infection prevention and control is our team of 16 Infection Preventionists.

Our IPs are trained nurses and epidemiologists that have a wide range of specialties and expertise including long term care, acute care hospitals, oncology, dental, critical access hospitals, and respiratory therapy.

Their primary focus is to ensure our healthcare settings are up to date with infection prevention and control (IPC) practices. The IPs undergo comprehensive IPC training with the ultimate goal of becoming certified in Infection Control (CIC). This certification requires annual continued education and recertification every 5 years.

ICAR Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Schedule your ICAR by clicking here: Schedule an ICAR Assessment

ICARs are free and non-regulatory.

ICARs are not required in Washington State but are an excellent opportunity to review and improve your infection prevention policies and protocols.

ICARs take approximately 2 hours or less, depending on the size of the facility.

There are many benefits for doing an ICAR. You will receive customized resources and education on your IPC policies and protocols that need improvement. The IP that you will work with is assigned to your county and will be available for your future IPC questions. We are dedicated to giving you consistent and up to date information when you need it.

We work with all types of health care facilities. Our IPs have a wide range of experience in acute care hospitals, critical access hospitals, skilled nursing, dental, dialysis and ambulatory care facilities. We work as a team to assure that we can accommodate all facility types.

You will receive a certificate of participation and a window cling that you can display. You will also receive a concise report with resources after the visit.

Yes, we will work with you on how best to schedule the visits.

Our IP will be the primary consultant on the visit. We invite your local health jurisdiction to join the visit if they are able. On occasion an IP trainee might attend to gain experience.
