What’s the Right Amount of Homework?

Decades of research show that homework has some benefits, especially for students in middle and high school—but there are risks to assigning too much.

Many teachers and parents believe that homework helps students build study skills and review concepts learned in class. Others see homework as disruptive and unnecessary, leading to burnout and turning kids off to school. Decades of research show that the issue is more nuanced and complex than most people think: Homework is beneficial, but only to a degree. Students in high school gain the most, while younger kids benefit much less.

The National PTA and the National Education Association support the “ 10-minute homework guideline ”—a nightly 10 minutes of homework per grade level. But many teachers and parents are quick to point out that what matters is the quality of the homework assigned and how well it meets students’ needs, not the amount of time spent on it.

The guideline doesn’t account for students who may need to spend more—or less—time on assignments. In class, teachers can make adjustments to support struggling students, but at home, an assignment that takes one student 30 minutes to complete may take another twice as much time—often for reasons beyond their control. And homework can widen the achievement gap, putting students from low-income households and students with learning disabilities at a disadvantage.

However, the 10-minute guideline is useful in setting a limit: When kids spend too much time on homework, there are real consequences to consider.

Small Benefits for Elementary Students

As young children begin school, the focus should be on cultivating a love of learning, and assigning too much homework can undermine that goal. And young students often don’t have the study skills to benefit fully from homework, so it may be a poor use of time (Cooper, 1989 ; Cooper et al., 2006 ; Marzano & Pickering, 2007 ). A more effective activity may be nightly reading, especially if parents are involved. The benefits of reading are clear: If students aren’t proficient readers by the end of third grade, they’re less likely to succeed academically and graduate from high school (Fiester, 2013 ).

For second-grade teacher Jacqueline Fiorentino, the minor benefits of homework did not outweigh the potential drawback of turning young children against school at an early age, so she experimented with dropping mandatory homework. “Something surprising happened: They started doing more work at home,” Fiorentino writes . “This inspiring group of 8-year-olds used their newfound free time to explore subjects and topics of interest to them.” She encouraged her students to read at home and offered optional homework to extend classroom lessons and help them review material.

Moderate Benefits for Middle School Students

As students mature and develop the study skills necessary to delve deeply into a topic—and to retain what they learn—they also benefit more from homework. Nightly assignments can help prepare them for scholarly work, and research shows that homework can have moderate benefits for middle school students (Cooper et al., 2006 ). Recent research also shows that online math homework, which can be designed to adapt to students’ levels of understanding, can significantly boost test scores (Roschelle et al., 2016 ).

There are risks to assigning too much, however: A 2015 study found that when middle school students were assigned more than 90 to 100 minutes of daily homework, their math and science test scores began to decline (Fernández-Alonso, Suárez-Álvarez, & Muñiz, 2015 ). Crossing that upper limit can drain student motivation and focus. The researchers recommend that “homework should present a certain level of challenge or difficulty, without being so challenging that it discourages effort.” Teachers should avoid low-effort, repetitive assignments, and assign homework “with the aim of instilling work habits and promoting autonomous, self-directed learning.”

In other words, it’s the quality of homework that matters, not the quantity. Brian Sztabnik, a veteran middle and high school English teacher, suggests that teachers take a step back and ask themselves these five questions :

  • How long will it take to complete?
  • Have all learners been considered?
  • Will an assignment encourage future success?
  • Will an assignment place material in a context the classroom cannot?
  • Does an assignment offer support when a teacher is not there?

More Benefits for High School Students, but Risks as Well

By the time they reach high school, students should be well on their way to becoming independent learners, so homework does provide a boost to learning at this age, as long as it isn’t overwhelming (Cooper et al., 2006 ; Marzano & Pickering, 2007 ). When students spend too much time on homework—more than two hours each night—it takes up valuable time to rest and spend time with family and friends. A 2013 study found that high school students can experience serious mental and physical health problems, from higher stress levels to sleep deprivation, when assigned too much homework (Galloway, Conner, & Pope, 2013 ).

Homework in high school should always relate to the lesson and be doable without any assistance, and feedback should be clear and explicit.

Teachers should also keep in mind that not all students have equal opportunities to finish their homework at home, so incomplete homework may not be a true reflection of their learning—it may be more a result of issues they face outside of school. They may be hindered by issues such as lack of a quiet space at home, resources such as a computer or broadband connectivity, or parental support (OECD, 2014 ). In such cases, giving low homework scores may be unfair.

Since the quantities of time discussed here are totals, teachers in middle and high school should be aware of how much homework other teachers are assigning. It may seem reasonable to assign 30 minutes of daily homework, but across six subjects, that’s three hours—far above a reasonable amount even for a high school senior. Psychologist Maurice Elias sees this as a common mistake: Individual teachers create homework policies that in aggregate can overwhelm students. He suggests that teachers work together to develop a school-wide homework policy and make it a key topic of back-to-school night and the first parent-teacher conferences of the school year.

Parents Play a Key Role

Homework can be a powerful tool to help parents become more involved in their child’s learning (Walker et al., 2004 ). It can provide insights into a child’s strengths and interests, and can also encourage conversations about a child’s life at school. If a parent has positive attitudes toward homework, their children are more likely to share those same values, promoting academic success.

But it’s also possible for parents to be overbearing, putting too much emphasis on test scores or grades, which can be disruptive for children (Madjar, Shklar, & Moshe, 2015 ). Parents should avoid being overly intrusive or controlling—students report feeling less motivated to learn when they don’t have enough space and autonomy to do their homework (Orkin, May, & Wolf, 2017 ; Patall, Cooper, & Robinson, 2008 ; Silinskas & Kikas, 2017 ). So while homework can encourage parents to be more involved with their kids, it’s important to not make it a source of conflict.

9th Grade Homeschool Curriculum Plan

9th grade homeschool picks written in front of open books

My daughter and I spent quite a bit of time this summer choosing the best 9th grade homeschool curriculum plan for her. I can’t believe she is already in 9th grade! I knew that time would go by fast, but I didn’t realize it would be this fast. Where has the time gone . . .

I let my daughter have a voice in selecting her 9th grade homeschool curriculum plan because I want her to feel a sense of educational ownership.

Homeschooling isn’t something I’m doing to her. She is an active participant in her education. I think she is more likely to take an active interest in her studies if they are courses she helped select.

Of course, I provided her with information about the typical high school course schedule, possible curriculum choices, and current co-op offerings. She doesn’t have any experience with high school, so it is my job to help her.

Together we filled in the beginnings of the high school planning template . We used that plan to choose her 9th grade homeschool curriculum picks.

Table of Contents

Poetry and a movie, writeshop ii, girls book club, 9th grade math ~ algebra, 9th grade science ~ physical science, 9th grade history ~ world history, foreign language ~ spanish i, elective #1 ~ beyond personal finance, elective #2 ~ home economics.

homework in 9th grade

9th Grade Language Arts

There are 3 components that make up the language arts portion of my daughter’s 9th grade homeschool curriculum.

homework in 9th grade

I was so excited when I saw that my friend, Vanessa from Wright at Homeschool , is teaching this class at our co-op next year. Hannah can learn from someone other than me while hanging out with friends.

This course looks really interesting. It teaches literary elements through poetry and movies.

The instruction happens mainly online, so my daughter will be able to work pretty independently outside of the co-op class. I do intend to follow along with her progress in the class so that I can offer help and guidance whenever necessary.

We will continue to have family poetry tea time , which pairs perfectly with this curriculum. I love our family tea time and will savor this tradition as long as my kids are willing. Thankfully they seem to like this tradition too.

UPDATE: Our co-op canceled classes in April due to the pandemic but the online format of the poetry class made it easy to continue at home. This poetry and movie class was a fun way to earn a language arts credit. I’m glad we included it in her 9th grade homeschool curriculum.

The Poetry and a Movie course includes a bit of writing. The students will be creating poems and poetry analysis.

However, I am going to supplement that with a bit of WriteShop II. We are slowly working through the WriteShop high school curriculum. My daughter started level II last year, but I don’t expect her to finish this year. After all, she has a pretty full language arts plan as part of her 9th grade homeschool curriculum already.

WriteShop

UPDATE – My daughter continued working her way through WriteShop II. We moved through it slowly because her main language arts course this year was the Poetry and Movies class.

My daughter and I are hosting a monthly book club through our co-op for girls 12 – 16. Hannah is 14, so this will be a great opportunity to grow closer to girls around her age.

The girls will choose the books they want to read together. I tried this format years ago with my daughter’s elementary book club and it worked really well.

So often I suggest books to my daughter and am met with either a sigh, an eye roll, or just a straight “No”. A friend can recommend the same exact book and my daughter will happily read it.

I don’t understand it, but that is parenting a teen.

I’m offering up my list of young adult books for teens to get the girls started on their book club book list.

Related: How to Start a Book Club for Kids

UPDATE – The book club was a huge success! The girls had a great time together and read a variety of books. Unfortunately, our last session was in March. By the time our April date rolled around, we were under stay-at-home orders. My daughter was burnt out on Zoom meetings so we opted to just end our book club year there.

The girls chose to read:

  • Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper
  • Spirit Hunters by Ellen Oh
  • Sisters by Raina Telegmeier
  • Murder is Bad Manners by Robin Stevens
  • The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie
  • My Name is Victoria by Lucy Worsley

Math builds on previous lessons, so I definitely wanted a strong math program as part of my daughter’s 9th grade homeschool curriculum.

Last year I added in some hands-on middle school math lessons and realized how well this format works for my daughter.

She was able to understand the pre-algebra lessons much easier through the use of manipulatives.

After realizing that math manipulatives really increase her retention (and thus boost her math confidence) I suggested she use the Math U See Algebra curriculum this year. She watched a few YouTube videos and decided that this does seem like a good fit.

I like that this curriculum includes:

  • Hands-On manipulatives
  • Instructional dvd
  • Teacher’s manual
  • Student book
  • Test manual

Math U See goes all the way through Calculus, so if this works well we won’t need to switch math curricula again for the rest of her high school years.

UPDATE – Math U See was a great success for Hannah. The format of video instruction, hands-on manipulatives, practice, and plenty of built-in review has really strengthened her math ability.

Right now the plan is for my daughter to complete a pretty typical high school sequence – physical science, biology, chemistry, and finally physics.

This sequence tends to line up well with the necessary math skills.

I had a few requirements for choosing a physical science curriculum:

  • Secular or neutral (nothing against religious curriculum – secular curricula just tends to fit our Lutheran beliefs best)
  • Reasonably priced
  • Included a lab component
  • Included a teacher’s guide

I had no idea how hard it would be to find something that checked all of those boxes!

Eventually, I decided to use Prentice Hall Physical Science: Concepts in Action.

I like that each chapter has a study guide and assessment included right in the textbook. The answers, along with instructional tips, are in the teacher’s manual.

Friends, it has been a long time since I studied high school science, so a teacher’s guide with answers is essential!

The laboratory manual contains 2 experiments per chapter. I am hoping that I will be able to find most of the materials, but know that I will likely have to substitute other experiments on occasion. I’m okay with that. Even if we only do one of the experiments for each chapter, that still amounts to 21 experiments.

This curriculum also includes a reading and study with math support workbook. It is essentially a study guide. I purchased this because I felt it would really help set my daughter up for success in high school science.

This textbook was definitely created for public school, but I think we can make it work as part of our 9th grade homeschool curriculum.

UPDATE – Overall, this science curriculum worked just fine. The study guide was a huge help in teaching Hannah how to best use a textbook. The lab guide was not very helpful though. It relied upon a lot of classroom science materials that we don’t have. I expected to be able to do more labs with Hannah, but I didn’t plan this as a lab science credit, so it was fine that it wasn’t very hands-on.

This year both of my children will study world history. It has been a while since we studied world history and this fit neatly in my homeschooling high school plan .

I really want to knock world history out in one year, but many homeschool history curricula stretch it out over two. Thankfully, I found Holt McDougal World History: Patterns of Interaction .

World History: Patterns of Interaction, Student Edition Survey

  • Used Book in Good Condition
  • Hardcover Book

This textbook is incredibly comprehensive. There is a ton of information crammed into one book. It covers 4 million B.C. to the 1960s through 36 chapters.

That means we should cover one chapter a week. Each chapter has 3 – 5 sections, so while it will move at a fast clip, it is doable.

I didn’t purchase the teacher edition because I don’t plan to do much teaching for history. One of my goals for high school is that my daughter learns to work a bit more independently. The plan is for her to read each chapter and then answer the questions.

We have never really used traditional textbooks, but knowing her way around one will likely help her in college. At a minimum, it is something I want her to be familiar with.

UPDATE – This textbook was great for providing an overview of world history. Hannah ended up not finishing all 36 chapters because I chose to add in videos and discussion. That is okay though. She finished about 90% of the textbook before we stopped for summer. I don’t remember ever finishing a history textbook when I was in high school. I’m glad we included this textbook in my daughter’s 9th grade homeschool curriculum plan.

I allowed my daughter to choose her foreign language and she chose Spanish. I’m so glad she choose Spanish!

It has been a long time since high school and college, but at one point her father and I were both pretty fluent. I might be a little rusty now, but I definitely remember enough to teach Spanish I as part of her 9th grade homeschool curriculum.

We are using ¡En Español! mainly because I found the first two volumes of the student textbook at a used textbook sale. We paid $8 for a bag full of books, so each Spanish textbook probably only cost us a dollar or two.

The books are from 2000, but entry-level Spanish doesn’t really change.

En Espanol, Level 1 (¡En español!) (Spanish Edition)

  • Estella Gahala (Author)

In addition to the student textbook, I also purchased the teacher’s edition, the unit 1 resource book, and two student workbooks (Ben wants to learn Spanish next year too).

I just want to point out how incredible it is that I was able to find 2 blank student workbooks that are almost 20 years old. Amazon really does have everything! They also had the VHS tape that accompanies this program, but we are going to skip that 😉

I expect that I will teach the lesson, we will work on one workbook page together, and then assign one workbook page to be done independently, but that is flexible.

Duolingo is also an option for extra practice.

My goal is for my daughter to have 4 years of foreign language before college, so it is a critical part of her 9th grade homeschool curriculum.

UPDATE – This is the one 9th grade homeschool curriculum choice that I was really displeased with last year. The traditional classroom style of this program just didn’t translate well into a homeschool. The lessons felt very random and like they didn’t build on each other. We gave it a solid try for a few months.

We ended up switching to Easy Spanish: Step by Step . This is not a curriculum per se, but a workbook with good instructions.

Easy Spanish Step-By-Step

  • Easy Spanish Step by Step proves that a solid grounding in grammar basics is the key to mastering a second language
  • Grammatical rules and concepts are clearly explained in order of importance, and more than 300 verbs and key terms are introduced on the basis of frequency
  • Numerous exercises and engaging readings help learners quickly build their Spanish speaking and comprehension prowess

I also found that my kids had an easier time grasping Spanish when I worked with them individually. This took a little longer each day but hopefully will take less time in the long run.

We are rounding out the 9th grade homeschool curriculum with a few electives.

Financial literacy is extremely important to me. In fact, this is not an elective that my daughter got to choose.

She was allowed to choose when in her high school career she participated in a personal finance course, but it is not considered optional (my rules – not North Carolina). I consider this course to be part of our family graduation requirements.

My daughter decided to go ahead and add it to her 9th grade homeschool curriculum plan.

This curriculum can be taught in person with Charla – the curriculum creator (if you live in the Raleigh area), at home, online, or through a homeschool co-op.

One of the moms in our co-op graciously offered to teach this course, so Hannah is all signed up.

The course works sort of like the Game of Life.

Each week students learn a new aspect of adult financial literacy – career choice, car purchase, budgeting, home purchase, children, etc. Sometimes they get to make choices and other times they roll a dice and they need to figure out a way to deal with whatever happens.

I love that they can not plan everything. That is life. Things don’t always go according to plan.

The course is 20 sessions, one per week, so I am counting it as a half credit.

UPDATE – I was incredibly impressed with Beyond Personal Finance. Hannah learned a ton about managing her money as she prepares to be an adult. She learned things like:

  • How to pay for college
  • How to choose an apartment
  • Making sure you are financially compatible before getting married
  • How to budget for unexpected events
  • Children are expensive

Hannah enjoyed learning about Personal Finance so I created a short book list for her. Once she finished the class and the book list (reading and discussing with a parent) I gave her full credit.

Her Personal Finance book list included:

  • Love Your Life Not Theirs: 7 Money Habits for Living the Life You Want by Rachel Cruze
  • All the Money in the World: What the Happiest People Know About Wealth Laura Vanderkam

My goal with this book list wasn’t to make her a financial genius who can get rich in no time. I just want her to have a plan for her money, to make wise choices, and to feel empowered.

These 9th grade homeschool curriculum picks are a great choice for students that are beginning to work a bit more independently. Check out what we are using to teach language arts, math, science, history, and electives.

Home economics is another one of those ‘mom mandatory’ high school classes in my house. Hannah decided to just go ahead and do it this year.

Truthfully, I am still designing this curriculum. I have the framework laid out but am still tweaking the assignments.

Hannah will essentially learn how to manage a household – food safety and prep, cleaning, laundry, routine maintenance, and basic child development as part of her 9th grade homeschool curriculum. These are skills that pretty much every adult needs, which is why it is mandatory in my high school.

UPDATE – Hannah is now a natural at cooking and cleaning. She could probably manage the house as well as I can at the point. In fact, this summer I was sick and stuck in bed for a few long days. I expected the house to be a disaster when I finally came downstairs after 4 days in my room. It wasn’t. Hannah had quietly taken it upon herself to pick up where I left off. She kept the house tidy, prepared simple meals, and even kept the grocery list updated.

I am excited to tackle high school with my daughter. The next four years are going to fly by and I am thankful for this extra time together.

homework in 9th grade

Welcome! My name is Jennifer. I am a teacher at heart. Before my children were born I was a public school teacher. Now, I am a homeschooling mom of two.

So how did 9th grade turn out? Were you and Hannah happy with your picks? What did you like or not like? Did you change resources or stick with them the whole year? Would you choose these resources again? Or would you choose something different? Maybe you could do a post at the end of the school year with a review of what you have used. Wondering the same for your 6th grade curriculum choices. THANK YOU for all these ideas!!!

Great idea! For the most part our year went as planned and I was happy with what I chose. I did ditch the Spanish curriculum for a different book after a few months though. I updated the post with what worked and what didn’t. 🙂

Can you give me more detail on the beyond personal finance course done at co-op? Did the teacher make it up or use a resource? My oldest daughter graduated homeschool last year (she homeschooled only highschool), and my youngest daughter starts high school next year. Personal finance went well for my oldest but I want a different plan for my younger.

Hi! I have a whole post about the personal finance curriculum my family used. I liked it so much that I taught it to my son and a few friends a few years later. The accountant who created it teaches it live, but I opted for the streaming version. This let me have the classes at a time that worked for everyone’s schedle.

The personal finance curriculum covers topics such as budgeting, choosing health insurance, how to rent an apartment, how to choose a car, how to pay taxes, and more.

9th Grade Homeschool Daily Schedule

9th Grade Homeschool Daily Schedule

Hi everyone! I’ve had a lot of requests to see what my 9th grader’s homeschool day looks like. So today I’m sharing her schedule with you. Keep in mind, this is a flexible schedule. Some days a subject might take her longer than others. And so she may finish a little earlier, or later depending on her workload for the day. She currently has an average of 4-5 hours of school per day, plus extra curricular activities in the afternoons. So far this schedule is working well for her.

daily_schedule_9thPromo

For High School I give her about 1 hour per subject each day, and she is doing each subject daily.

I also have homework listed on her schedule, and some of you are probably wondering about that since we homeschool.  She has daily homework from our Options program along with studying for tests and doing extra projects not done during class time. So she uses her homework time to work on those assignments.

How do you do art and computer, what curriculum do you use for art and computer? What time are you usually done with school for your nine grader that includes with them studying?

Right now she is doing Art and Computers/Programming through our options program. There are several online options for computers though. Udemy has a ton of programming/computer related classes along with many other subjects. And Atelier Art and Home Art Studio DVDs are also great art alternatives.

Its a great article! This will definitely help in making a schedule for all grades. I have been also trying to make a schedule for 8th grade. This can help in maintaining schedule in proper way. Thanks for such a wonderful information about making schedule.

Do you count bible as a class? Doing the interactive devotional,is it enough for a class? What about credit and grade? Thank you

I count it as an elective and it gets .5 credits per year. Except the year we did Summit Bible Study that was worth 1 full credit.

Hi, can you tell me what you thought about the literature you picked? I recently purchased to check out for the next school year for my 9th grader and I am trying to figure out how it will work?

Hi, so far we like it, but it is a bit more flexible schedule wise, so it just takes a bit to get used to and I have to stay on top of things to make sure we’re moving along.

The calculators above use the following letter grades and their typical corresponding numerical equivalents based on grade points.

Brief history of different grading systems

In 1785, students at Yale were ranked based on "optimi" being the highest rank, followed by second optimi, inferiore (lower), and pejores (worse). At William and Mary, students were ranked as either No. 1, or No. 2, where No. 1 represented students that were first in their class, while No. 2 represented those who were "orderly, correct and attentive." Meanwhile at Harvard, students were graded based on a numerical system from 1-200 (except for math and philosophy where 1-100 was used). Later, shortly after 1883, Harvard used a system of "Classes" where students were either Class I, II, III, IV, or V, with V representing a failing grade. All of these examples show the subjective, arbitrary, and inconsistent nature with which different institutions graded their students, demonstrating the need for a more standardized, albeit equally arbitrary grading system.

In 1887, Mount Holyoke College became the first college to use letter grades similar to those commonly used today. The college used a grading scale with the letters A, B, C, D, and E, where E represented a failing grade. This grading system however, was far stricter than those commonly used today, with a failing grade being defined as anything below 75%. The college later re-defined their grading system, adding the letter F for a failing grade (still below 75%). This system of using a letter grading scale became increasingly popular within colleges and high schools, eventually leading to the letter grading systems typically used today. However, there is still significant variation regarding what may constitute an A, or whether a system uses plusses or minuses (i.e. A+ or B-), among other differences.

An alternative to the letter grading system

Letter grades provide an easy means to generalize a student's performance. They can be more effective than qualitative evaluations in situations where "right" or "wrong" answers can be easily quantified, such as an algebra exam, but alone may not provide a student with enough feedback in regards to an assessment like a written paper (which is much more subjective).

Although a written analysis of each individual student's work may be a more effective form of feedback, there exists the argument that students and parents are unlikely to read the feedback, and that teachers do not have the time to write such an analysis. There is precedence for this type of evaluation system however, in Saint Ann's School in New York City, an arts-oriented private school that does not have a letter grading system. Instead, teachers write anecdotal reports for each student. This method of evaluation focuses on promoting learning and improvement, rather than the pursuit of a certain letter grade in a course. For better or for worse however, these types of programs constitute a minority in the United States, and though the experience may be better for the student, most institutions still use a fairly standard letter grading system that students will have to adjust to. The time investment that this type of evaluation method requires of teachers/professors is likely not viable on university campuses with hundreds of students per course. As such, although there are other high schools such as Sanborn High School that approach grading in a more qualitative way, it remains to be seen whether such grading methods can be scalable. Until then, more generalized forms of grading like the letter grading system are unlikely to be entirely replaced. However, many educators already try to create an environment that limits the role that grades play in motivating students. One could argue that a combination of these two systems would likely be the most realistic, and effective way to provide a more standardized evaluation of students, while promoting learning.
