To honor this legacy, the Whiting School of Engineering has established the Percy Pierre Doctoral Fellowships. These   awards   recognize outstanding incoming graduate students from underrepresented backgrounds who will contribute both to the intellectual life of their departments and to that of the broader graduate community.

The fellowships will provide recipients with competitive monthly stipends, tuition, health insurance, and fees for the first two years of graduate school and access to a variety of special programming and mentoring opportunities

Eligible students will be considered automatically as part of their application.

Grad School Grants and Fellowships

You may be eligible for funding through grants and fellowships offered by the Graduate School to support the research and scholarly activities of our graduate students.

Graduate School Fellowships

Inclusion & diversity fellowships.

The Graduate School offers two fellowships to support the recruitment, retention, and success of outstanding graduate students from historically underrepresented groups: the Spaulding-Smith Fellowship for STEM students, and the Research Enhancement and Leadership (REAL) Fellowship for doctoral students. Students are nominated by their degree programs and notified if they are selected.

Graduate School Research Grants

Predissertation research grants.

Predissertation Grants of up to $1,500 offer early career doctoral students the opportunity to evaluate the feasibility of planned dissertation research, generate pilot data, or establish the necessary networks to carry out future dissertation research, among other activities. The aim is to help students gather information, answer questions, or solve problems related to their dissertation research design. These grants are NOT designed to fund dissertation research itself but rather to help you complete activities that will leave you well positioned to begin your dissertation research after you complete your prospectus.

Dissertation Fieldwork Grants

These grants of up to $5,000 provide support for fieldwork expenses. For the purpose of this grant, fieldwork is defined as data collection that takes place for an extended period of time (e.g. weeks or months) outside the Western Massachusetts geographical area. These grants are not designed to fund data analysis, only expenses related to data collection. In rare instances, applicants may request up to $8,000 to help support work that will take place over an extended period of time and therefore incur significant expense. Applicants will need to submit a statement as part of the application to explain why additional funds are being requested.

Rapid Research Grants

The Graduate School Rapid Research Grant aims to provide funding for doctoral students to conduct unanticipated, time-sensitive research as part of their dissertation research. This opportunity is open to research activities that were not anticipated and will only be possible for a short, specific period of time.

Supplement for Travel with Children

These competitive grants are awarded as a supplement to the three Graduate School Grants (Predissertation, Fieldwork, and Rapid Research Grants). Students must submit the Supplement for Travel with Children application in the same cycle as the Predissertation, Fieldwork, or Rapid Research Grant application; the deadline for the supplement is the same as the primary application.

Supplement for Public Engagement

To support outreach and engagement efforts by graduate student researchers, the Graduate School offers Public Engagement Supplements. These competitive grants are awarded as a supplement to the three Graduate School Grants (Predissertation, Fieldwork, and Rapid Research Grants); most awards will be between $500 and $1,000. Public Engagement Supplements stem from the university's interest in advancing and applying knowledge and innovation to the betterment of society.

Other Internal Funding

Travel grants.

Travel Grants support graduate students in their efforts to establish themselves and acquire valuable experiences in their field. These awards are administered by the Graduate Program Director (GPD) in each department and funded by a block grant from the Graduate School. Graduate students should contact their GPD for more information.

Interdisciplinary UMass Grants and Fellowships

Beyond the Graduate School, these interdisciplinary awards, grants, and fellowships are open to students from a variety of disciplines.

Center for Research on Families

The  Center for Research on Families  (CRF) offers Conference Registration Awards, Dissertation Awards, and Summer Methodology Scholarships. Students must be conducting research that may impact and benefit families, broadly defined.

Natural History Collections Summer Graduate Research Scholarship

This scholarship provides up to $5,000 to support collections-based summer research in botany, entomology, paleontology, and vertebrate biology. The call for applications generally opens in early February.

The Center for Justice, Law, and Societies Graduate Fellow Positions

CJLS is an interdisciplinary group of scholars who focus on the creation, implementation, and real-world applications of law. They welcome applications from graduate students in all departments and colleges throughout UMass.

CJLS fellows will serve a one-year term (this fellowship does not not take the place of a full-time teaching assistantship or research assistantship).  Benefits of the fellowship include:

  • Support from a community of interdisciplinary faculty and graduate students to develop an academic project (article, comp, or dissertation chapter) related to justice, law, and societies (broadly construed). This includes their assignment to two faculty mentors.
  • Funding to attend an interdisciplinary law-related conference (Law & Society Association; Law, Culture and Humanities, or another law-related conference subject to the approval of the fellowship director). This funding will include coverage of each fellow’s flight, hotel room, conference registration fee (including membership fees, if required for registration), up to $1000.
  • Funding and support to invite a faculty member to participate in the Five College Law, Justice, and Societies speaker series.

Visit the CJLS website for more details on the fellowship.

New Scholarship Supports Western’s Graduate Program in Creative Writing

A girl sits underneath a tree writing in a notebook.

The Mari Sandoz Emerging Writer Scholarship will be awarded every year.

Students with a passion for writing about the people and landscapes of the West will have a new scholarship opportunity when they enter Western Colorado University’s Graduate Program in Creative Writing (GPCW), thanks to the generosity of the Mari Sandoz Heritage Society.

The Mari Sandoz Emerging Writer Scholarship will be available to one qualified first-year graduate student in the GPCW’s Nature Writing concentration starting in the summer of 2024. The scholarship will be granted each academic year, awarding the winner $3,000 each semester for a total of $6,000.

According to Mari Sandoz Heritage Society board member and director of the GPCW Nature Writing Concentration, Laura Pritchett, the scholarship aims to memorialize Mari Sandoz’s legacy as someone who had a passion for writing and loved the landscapes and peoples of the West. Through the scholarship, the board hopes to support significant writing about the West in the contemporary literary landscape.

“Sandoz’s writing emphasized the environmental and human landscape of the West and was recognized for her no-nonsense yet deeply evocative style,” Pritchett said. “She was passionate about sharing her hard-earned and well-honed writing skills. We’re fortunate to have the Mari Sandoz Heritage Society support this scholarship.”

Applying to the GPCW’s Nature Writing program will also serve as an application for the scholarship. For more information about the GPCW Nature Writing Concentration, visit western.edu/program/nature-writing .

Here's an overview of some of the scholarships Brevard's students received this year

Many brevard students will graduate with scholarships. here's an overview of where they got them from, and what schools reported the most scholarships..

google phd fellowship stipend

On Friday, Archer Ross will graduate high school with part of his college tuition already paid for.

“I was very excited when I found out about the scholarship,” said the Viera High senior, who earned the dean’s scholarship at Syracuse University. “I think I actually woke my friend up with my celebration on the way back from a field trip. It was late, and he had fallen asleep, but I think I turned and woke him up in my excitement.”

Archer’s scholarship will cover $10,000 a year at Syracuse, where he plans to study forensic science. The cost of attendance for students living on campus was estimated at about $85,214 for the 2023-2024 school year.

How students got scholarships – and the dollar amount attached to them – varies widely. For some, like Archer, it was as simple as applying to their preferred university and getting a scholarship based on their grades. For others, it was a matter of applying to local scholarships, like The Democratic Women's Club of Central Brevard and Space Coast Runners.

FLORIDA TODAY reached out to high schools around the county about the scholarships their students have received. Eleven schools provided data such as how many students received scholarships, where the scholarships were from and the amount of funding the scholarships equated to.

Which school reported the most funds?

Edgewood Jr./Sr. High School in Merritt Island reported the most funds from scholarships, with students receiving more than $7 million dollars in scholarship funds. That figure excludes any funds students received from Bright Futures, according to the school's principal, Jacqueline Ingratta.

Three students are National Merit Scholars, and two received appointments to West Point, Ingratta said, adding that most graduating seniors will attend four-year universities or two-year colleges.

West Shore Jr./Sr. High School reported the second highest figure, with Principal Rick Fleming saying students had received about $6.4 million in funding. He expected that figure would reach about $10 million by the end of the year.

In total, 11 high schools reported more than $28,296,198 funds in scholarships.

More on scholarships: Brevard students vie for scholarships. But it's not an easy feat, even for top performers

Which school reported the most scholarship recipients?

West Shore Jr./Sr. High School in Melbourne reported the most scholarship recipients, saying nearly all of their 138 graduating seniors had received scholarships.

Seven students were named National Merit Scholars, Fleming said. He added that 121 seniors were eligible for Bright Futures, with 61 of those students receiving 100% of their tuition, while 60 will receive 75% of their tuition.

Where did students get scholarships from?

Students received scholarships from a variety of local, state and national sources.

Some Sunshine State colleges, universities and training academies that offered scholarships to Brevard students included Florida State University, University of North Florida, Florida Atlantic University, University of South Florida, University of Central Florida, University of Florida, Florida Tech, Eastern Florida State College, and Cocoa's fire and police academies.

Some students received scholarships for out-of-state schools, including Rochester Institute of Technology, Paine College, Marion Military Institute, Kean University, Colorado State University, University of Southern California, Clemson University, Vanderbilt University, Penn State and Kent State University.

Numerous other sources contributed to Brevard students' scholarships, including Bright Futures, Alpha Phi Alpha, Zeta Phi Beta, Space Coast League of Cities and Jess Parrish Medical Foundation.

'Educated. We Stand': Jenkins creates organization combatting 'conservative takeover' of school boards

When were scholarship deadlines?

Each scholarship source has a different deadline. It’s a good idea for high schoolers to start researching and applying for scholarships between their junior and senior year, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

For Bright Futures, all eligibility requirements must be met by the date of a student’s high school graduation , though SAT, CLT, ACT and PERT tests taken through Aug. 31 are accepted for evaluations. They also must complete a Florida Financial Aid Application no later than Aug. 31 following graduation to be eligible for a scholarship.

CompSci student awarded PhD scholarship

Nicholas Leisegang

The Department of Computer Science is delighted to announce that Nicholas Leisegang has been awarded a Faculty of Science PhD scholarship.

Originally from KwaZulu-Natal, Nicholas moved to Cape Town 2018 to start his academic career, however he did not initially pursue computer science, but instead took mathematics for both his Bachelors and Masters degrees. "While studying logic in a pure maths setting, I became increasingly interested in the uses of logic in computer science, and when I heard about Prof. Meyer’s research unit I was immediately fascinated by the types of logics and their AI applications which he works on. I also thought that the postgrad students and academics who I engaged with in the department before signing up seemed like really nice people to work with," said Nicholas.

With an interest in various different types of formal logics that occur within the context of Artificial Intelligence, Nicholas is fascinated by Defeasible Reasoning, Standpoint Logics, and Description logics, and their applications in explainable AI and large database systems. Working under the supervision of Professor Tommie Meyer, co-director of the Artificial Intelligence Research Unit (AIRU), Nicholas hopes to work with other international academics, in particular Prof Sebastian Rudolph at the computational logic research unit at the Technical University of Dresden.

For students starting out, Nicholas advises  being actively engaged with your work and with other students/researchers around you. "I’ve found this is the thing that’s kept me most motivated and helped me discover fields of study that I am passionate about."

The  Artificial Intelligence Research Unit (AIRU) aims to provide research and thought leadership to academia, industry, government and civil society, so that they can leverage AI to improve people’s lives. AIRU is based in the Department of Computer Science in the Faculty of Science at the University of Cape Town, and is led by Prof Tommie Meyer and Prof Deshen Moodley.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

Saskatchewan Lieutenant Governor Scholarship Recipients Announced

Released on May 15, 2024

The Government of Saskatchewan is pleased to announce the 2024-25 recipients of the Saskatchewan Lieutenant Governor Scholarship and the Saskatchewan Lieutenant Governor Indigenous Scholarship. Each $20,000 scholarship supports Saskatchewan graduate and post-graduate students in research and leadership in their respective fields.

"It is an honour that the name of these scholarships now includes 'Lieutenant Governor', which previously commemorated Queen Elizabeth II," Lieutenant Governor Russ Mirasty said. "I am very pleased that this program will continue to provide substantial funds to hard-working Saskatchewan students. Congratulations to this year's recipients on their well-earned recognition."

"These outstanding students will have the resources and support they need to excel in their studies through these scholarships," Advanced Education Minister Gordon Wyant said. "The awards not only recognize the academic excellence of these two deserving recipients, but encourage advanced research that will benefit our universities and our province."

The 2024-25 Saskatchewan Lieutenant Governor Scholarship recipient is Laura Jean Schnell, a graduate student pursuing a Doctorate of Philosophy in Microbial Genetics and Toxin Production from the University of Regina. Her research will investigate the quality of recreational, agricultural and drinking water in Saskatchewan. This research will inform water management and aim to reduce costs for livestock producers, identify potential risks to water security and provide a foundation for further water quality improvements.

Laura Jean Schnell and Jeremy Irvine are receiving Lieutenant Governor Scholarships. Laura is pursuing a Doctorate of Philosophy in Microbial Genetics and Toxin Production. Jeremy is pursuing Master of Science in Plan Science.

"I am honoured to receive this scholarship," Schnell said. "This award means that I can focus on my research developing genetic technologies to track harmful bacteria in Saskatchewan without financial stress. Receiving this award renews my motivation to grow as a scientist and continue striving for excellence in research that can benefit Saskatchewan."

The 2024-25 Saskatchewan Lieutenant Governor Indigenous Scholarship recipient is Jeremy Irvine, a graduate student pursing a Master of Science degree in Plant Science from the University of Saskatchewan. His research will focus on the evaluation of yield damage caused by the lesser clover leaf weevil in red clover seed production in Saskatchewan. This will help reduce input costs for growers and environmental harm caused by redundant pesticide applications.

"Being selected for the Saskatchewan Lieutenant Governor Indigenous Scholarship is an honour and validation of my dedication to academic excellence and research," Irvine said. "Receiving this prestigious scholarship fills me with immense gratitude, not only for the opportunity it presents, but also for the unwavering support of my friends, family and community - Yellow Quill First Nation. Their encouragement and belief in my aspirations have been a constant strength throughout my academic journey."

Each scholarship is awarded annually to graduate or post-graduate students who are in excellent academic standing and pursuing studies in Saskatchewan, and whose research supports Saskatchewan's Growth Plan.

In 2023, both scholarships were renamed from the Queen Elizabeth II Scholarship and the Queen Elizabeth II Centennial Aboriginal Scholarship, after the passing of Her Majesty. Over $1 million has been provided to 59 students through these scholarships since 1987.
