Kashmir has another charm as a holiday resort: In addition to its variety of fruits and flowers, scenes and sights, the choice of varied climate that its hills and meadows offer, there are several opportunities for games and sports.

One can do boating, skiing, skating, mountaineering, horse riding Etc. One can indulge in fishing, hunting wild animals, catching birds, shooting ducks and other kinds of sports.

There are many beauty spots of Kashmir that attract tourists from far-flung places : Pahalgam and Gulmarg are among the finest of them all. The latter is the valley of roses and the tourism department has built up two golf courses of a high standard for the recreation of game lovers. The place is ideal for skiing and trekking.

The Jammu and Kashmir Government Tourist Department extends all kinds of facilities to tourists: It has opened its branches at various important stations to supply information and give help to those who intend planning a holiday in Kashmir. Besides those branches, there are innumerable Tourist Agencies in Kashmir which cater to the needs of visitors.

The tourist trade is an important factor in the economy of Jammu and Kashmir : As many as four lakh tourists pay a visit to the valley every year. The tourist season commences in April-May and continues up to October. Some Europeans come in winter to enjoy the beauty of snowfall and such winter sports like skating and skiing at Gulmarg which is the queen of hill stations in Asia.

The Jammu and Kashmir Government has opened the office of the Director of Tourism which gives visitors all types of information regarding their comfort and safety, board and lodging, journey and transport.

Introduction.

Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) is a Union Territory (UT) of India, located in the country’s northern part and a global tourist destination. In addition to traditional recreational tourism, vast scope exists for adventure, pilgrimage, spiritual, and health tourism. The natural beauty and picturesque locations have made it a favoured destination for tourists across the world. Jammu is famous for its temples, while Kashmir Valley is known for its lakes and gardens.

J&K has agro-climatic conditions best suited for horticulture and floriculture. Horticulture is the mainstay of the rural economy, providing employment to large number of local inhabitants.

At current prices, the GSDP of J&K has been estimated at Rs. 2.31 trillion (US$ 27.95 billion) in 2023-24. The UT’s GSDP increased at a CAGR of 8.84% between 2018-19 and 2023-24.

The J&K government has an industrial policy that offers attractive incentives along with a single-window clearance mechanism. In April 2021, the government of Jammu & Kashmir signed 456 memoranda of understanding (MOUs) with various firms for a potential investment worth Rs. 23,152 crore (US$ 3.17 billion). In March 2022, the UAE pledged to invest Rs. 3,000 crore (US$ 391.8 million) in J&K.

According to the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), cumulative FDI inflow in J&K was valued at US$ 1.07 million between October 2019-March 2023.

Total exports from J&K stood at US$ 89.77 million in 2022-23 (until August 2022).

Recent Developments in Key Sectors

• As of April 30, 2023, J&K had a total installed power-generation capacity of 3,516.07 MW, comprising 1,866.08 MW under central utilities, 1,543.17 MW (state utilities) and 106.82 MW (private utilities)
• According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, J&K had 11.58 million wireless and 9.13 million internet subscribers with a tele-density of 85.23%, as of December 2022.
• Under the State Budget 2023-24, Rs. 2,928.04 crore (US$ 357.4 million) has been allocated for housing and urban development.
• Raw silk production stood at 98 MT in 2021-22 in Jammu & Kashmir

• The Government of India's newly constituted Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir has announced a fresh plan to revitalise the region's crafts sector in August 2021. The project, known as Karkhandar, aims to improve trainee learning techniques and help artisans better their living standards.
• J&K is famous for its small-scale and cottage industries such as carp

• J&K SIDCO is the nodal agency for promotion and development of medium- and large-scale industries in the UT.

Pilgrimage tourism development in Jammu and Kashmir: Issues and challenges

Pilgrimage tourism is that form of tourism which is mainly motivated for religious reasons. Pilgrimage tourism is considered to be one of the fast growing forms of tourism. The occupation of tourism is providing very useful and fruitful avenues especially to those people who are engaged in tourism activities, because through this smoke less industry they are not only enhancing their standard of living but also generating income and employment opportunities. Jammu and Kashmir is the paradise on earth because of the great scenic beauty and sacred pilgrimage destinations which are very popular in India and all over the world. Amarnath Yatra: A Militarised Pilgrimage is a documentation of all facets of the Amarnath Yatra, an annual pilgrimage in Jammu and Kashmir. The report studies the history of the Yatra and stages of its evolution while examining its different motivations. State institutions involved and their role – especially the administration – armed forces nexus has been explored. Other groups of people and organisations providing services in the Yatra including unorganised labour and the formal sector are assessed to understand the emergent power dynamics including the relationship between the socio-religious institutions and the State. The Yatra being conducted in high altitudes has serious environmental impacts, which is also studied in detail. The Yatra is fraught with controversies and conflicts and some of the more critical instances have been documented in this report. The Amarnath Yatra is one among several others which are receiving State patronage. The other upcoming Yatras and their implications has also been documented. The report concludes that the Yatra is really being conducted on the might of the Indian armed forces along with socio-religious and langar organisations mobilising people to participate. We believe that each of these aspects may be further studied for nuances which will also throw light on how religious tourism / pilgrimages are being used by the State to exercise control in areas that are in conflict with the State.

Efforts have been made to increase arrival of tourists in the state. However, state has witnessed ups & downs in the last thirty years of turmoil. The start of armed struggle in mid-80's created the sense of fear both within the state as well outside. The state saw worst days in its history and tourism industry was greatly harmed by both armed struggle as well as by counter operations by security forces. There was hardly any tourist who would visit the state particularly valley of Kashmir once lauded as heaven on earth. However, it was only in recent last decade when state saw its revival phenomena of tourist industry. But with the growing violence and turmoil in the Kashmir since 2008 once again have put this industry in backseats. In this background this paper will examine the phenomenal increase and decrease of tourists in the time of turmoil and peace in Jammu& Kashmir. Besides, paper will also try to examine the impact of tourism in shaping the peace and prosperity of the state.

This study is an effort to showcase the importance of pilgrimage tourism in the Sindh Valley. The present study is based on the notion that pilgrimage tourism of late in the Valley of Kashmir has remained restricted to the annual Amarnath Yatra which is being now seen more political than religious. In order to make pilgrimage tourism a more viable and sustainable tool for the overall development of tourism in Kashmir Valley, the present study focused on Sindh Valley, which is one of the important side valleys of the region. The study conjugates with notion that pilgrimage tourism not only represents the ethos of Kashmir but also helps in the sustainable development of tourism in the Sindh Valley. The present work is based on the researcher's continuous visits to the shrine of Kheer Bhawani and interaction with the local people and shrine authorities. The present study, which was undertaken during the annual festival in the month of May 2014, consists of a random sample of 150 participants. The study uses factor analysis to find out the dimensions for the promotion of pilgrimage tourism in the Sindh Valley. The findings are conceptual in nature and reveal that pilgrimage tourism is not only important from the perspective of religious fervour but it also helps in the promotion of peace, communal harmony and improves the guest-host relation. It is concluded from the study that pilgrimage tourism, if promoted in the Sindh Valley, will not only help in the promotion of sustainable tourism but will also help in the preservation of Kashmir ethos which is the corner stone of mutual brotherhood, peace, perseverance and religious tolerance, which is simply known as Kashmiriyat.

As on one hand, tourism is seen as an economic option and on the other side the greater social and human effect. Jammu and Kashmir offers different types of tourism, which are highlighted in this paper, which type of tourism is most liked and is popular among tourists, is also presented in this paper for proper development of tourism industry in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Essay on Tourism in Jammu and Kashmir!

The practice of holiday-making away from one’s normal place of residence is known as tourism. Tourists are defined as people visiting a place other than that in which they normally reside, for a period including an overnight stay, for any reason other than following an occupation remunerated in the place visited.

This operational definition, therefore, includes certain people travel­ling for reasons other than holiday-making, (e.g., conference participants, pilgrims) but it is normally impracticable to exclude them when data are col­lected. The distinction between Recreation and Tourism is that recreation involves leisure activities of less than 24 hours’ duration away from home, whereas tourism involves a longer time scale and therefore, requires more in­frastructure in the form of accommodation provision.

The International Association of Scientific Experts on Tourism (AIEST) has defined tourism as the sum of phenomena and relationships arising from the travel and stay of non-residents, in so far as they do not lead to permanent residence and are not connected with any earning activity. The essence of the tourist economy is that the tourist spends, in the cho­sen holiday area, money that has been earned elsewhere.

Charistaller (1964) has pointed out that tourism is a very important free-market agent of the spatial redistribution of wealth. In any economy, tourism acts as an export sector, bringing money into the area, setting up both income multipliers cre­ating jobs.

The history of tourism is as old as the human society itself. The early tourism can be traced from the period when man set sail and attempted to know the immediate world around. His inherent zeal for enchanted un­known lands and curiosity for new world culminated into early travels.

At the start of the present century, travel and tourism were confined only to af­fluent few, i.e., rich, religious zealots, conquerors, the well educated and the elites who were fascinated by the enchanting beauty and mysteries of un­known land. Tourism has, however, grown from the pursuits of a privileged few to a mass movement of people; with the urge to discover the unknown places and to seek change in environment and to undergo new experiences.

The dramatic transformation of rudimentary tourism into a giant phe­nomenon has resulted from a set of physico, socio-economic, political, psychological and aesthetic factors. Modern tourism upsurged after the Sec­ond World War commencing with a spurt in human mobility and intensive application of mechanization. In the ending part of the 18th century, indus­trialization resulted into commercialism and urbanization.

Consequently, the standard of living of the people went up and there was a concomitant rise in leisure hours compelling people to adopt travel and recreation as an inevitable lifestyle. Also, within a short span, human members increased tre­mendously particularly in the urban centres. All these factors culminated into ushering a new wave of migration, typically termed as ‘Mass Tourism’.

At present, touring and outdoor recreation have become a genuine social, economic and psychological need, not for individuals alone but also for our entire society and economy. Tourism development holds immense appeal because of anticipated economic benefits of income and employment. In terms of employment, it is the largest industry that provides jobs to about one in every 16 workers worldwide. It helps in removing the regional dis­parities, particularly in underdeveloped and backward areas.

Kashmir is one of the most beautiful tourist destinations of the world. It used to attract enormous number of domestic and international tourists be­fore 1989. The period between 1989 and 1998 is a lean period from the tourists point of view.

The unstable political situation of the state, the mili­tancy and slogan of Azadi (independence) discouraged the tourists and recreation-seekers. Tourism, however, is a dominant economic activity in the state. Moreover, about 20 per cent of the workforce of the state is di­rectly or indirectly dependent on tourism.

After agriculture, tourism is the main economic activity in the state. The Jammu and Kashmir state is quite rich in renewable resources (water, forest and fresh air) and scenic beauty. Its lush green forests, rich wildlife, snow-clad peaks, mountainous gorges, giant glaciers, rich fishing grounds, lofty skiing grounds, carpet green turfs, perennial rivers, gushing fountains, floating gardens in Dal Lake, hissing springs, cool breeze, shimmering lakes, invigorating climate, apple-almond orchards, saffron fields and benevolent and kind hearted folk are well known all over the word. In the absence of basic mineral (iron-ore, copper, coal, petroleum, etc.), its productive fields, valuable forests, water and invigorating climate are the great bounties of na­ture.

DPAP’s Saleem Parray among 25 file nominations from Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag

O n the last day of filing nomination papers from Anantnag Lok Sabha seat, 25 candidates, including 17 independents filed their papers. However, no candidate from the Bharatiya Janata Party filed a nomination.

Earlier, there were indications that Ghulam Nabi Azad backing out from the poll race may push BJP to field its Jammu and Kashmir unit president Ravinder Raina from the seat. However, BJP leaders said that the high command has decided not to field any candidate from Kashmir. The saffron party will lend support to candidates from other political parties.

Advocate Saleem Parray, who replaced Azad as the DPAP candidate, meanwhile, filed his nomination papers from the seat.

Azad, who accompanied Parray, addressed the last-minute change, saying, “Leaders of my party want me to work in Jammu and Kashmir and not the Centre.”

Sources said the BJP is undecided over who to support on the seat after Azad’ss withdrawal.

On BJP not fielding its candidate from Anantnag, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and National Conference vice-president, Omar Abdullah said only BJP’s symbol was missing.

“The BJP candidates will be in fray on all seats. The BJP top leaders who come and meet people here are their candidates, people know everything,” he said.

Jammu and Kashmir Parts Receive Rain, More in Offing

SRINAGAR: Rains lashed parts of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, with more wet weather expected given the forecast by the meteorological department here. Amidst cloud cover, the night temperature recorded a rise, but the mercury is expected to fall during the daytime.

A meteorological department official said that Srinagar and Jammu cities received traces of rainfall, while Qazigund and Gulmarg had 0.4mm and 0.2mm respectively.

The weather department has predicted “widespread light to moderate rain and thunders” on April 18 and 19.

“On April 18-19, generally cloudy weather with light to moderate rain and light snow over higher reaches is expected at most places, with thunder/lightning during April 18 evening to April 19 late evening/night,” the official said.

He further mentioned that light rain is expected at scattered places over the weekend, while generally dry weather is anticipated from April 21-25, with the possibility of afternoon thundershower activity at isolated places.

Generally cloudy weather with light rain coupled with thunder has been forecast at many places from April 26 to 27.

Regarding temperatures, Srinagar recorded a minimum of 12.5°C, up from 9.4°C on the previous night, marking a 4.6°C increase, which is above normal for this time of the year in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

Qazigund recorded a minimum of 9.6°C, compared to 6.2°C on the previous night, marking a 3.1°C increase from the normal temperature for the gateway town of Kashmir.

Pahalgam recorded a low of 7.2°C, up from 2.1°C on the previous night, marking a 3.8°C increase above normal for the famous resort in south Kashmir.

Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded a minimum of 11.2°C, compared to 7.0°C on the previous night, marking a 4.7°C increase above normal.

Kupwara town recorded a low of 10.9°C, up from 7.0°C on the previous night, marking a 4.1°C increase above normal.

Gulmarg recorded a low of 3.2°C, compared to 1.6°C on the previous night, marking a 0.9°C increase above normal for the world-famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

Jammu recorded a minimum of 21.4°C, which was 1.5°C above normal for the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

Banihal recorded a low of 13.2°C, Batote 14.3°C, and Bhaderwah 11.8°C, the official added. (GNS)
