EdWeek Our Story

Today Education Week is recognized as the premier source of news, information, and analysis on K-12 education. But our origins are in the Sputnik era, when anxiety over the United States’ ability to withstand a concerted challenge to its technological pre-eminence touched off a wave of initiatives to improve the nation’s schools and colleges. In 1957, a bold experiment by 15 editors of leading university alumni magazines to speak with one voice to their readers as higher education sought to respond to the deep national concerns of that time. And this is where our story begins:

– What are the most promising fields of science and medicine?

–  Today development of science is a priority not only for Russia but for the whole world as well. It should be noted that scientists have made special progress in the field of medicine. Humankind has made amazing discoveries, scientific breakthroughs and created useful drugs. Nowadays all doctors are working mainly to save lives: fight against cancer, treat cardiovascular diseases, to prevent epidemics, etc. Moreover, we primarily focus on healthcare quality improvement. We need to find new ways to preserve both cognitive abilities and physical health. It will help people to stay active throughout whole life.

– How does it influence on the University research staff? Is the research field being changed?

– Today Life Sciences became one of the top fields of science and technology. Traditionally Sechenov University has strong positions in clinical medicine and pharmacy. Nowadays Sechenov University is the University of Life Sciences that concentrates global talents, knowledge and technology. In other words, the University meets the challenges of modernity. The University’s scientific and technological achievements in biotechnology and molecular biology led to creation of innovative projects. Sechenov University’s multidisciplinary teams are developing a big data platform to to treat patients and promote active longevity. Personalized Oncology is also one of the main areas of clinical practice at Sechenov University. We have created OncoPro platform for early diagnosis and risk assessment of cancer that is able to obtain a large amount of information to identify the disease in the early stages and make individual recommendations for cancer prevention.

– What is difference between science for young scientists/students and science for prominent scientists?

– Young scientists combine two roles. On the one hand, they are scientists; on the other hand, they are still students. We begin to attract students to join student scientific circles and the scientific society. We have already achieved great results: in 2018, our students and postgraduates have tripled the publication activity.

Sechenov University is starting a new project – the International School of Medical Scientists. It aims at training the research staff of our clinical departments to transform research achievements into high-rated scientific articles, to present the results of their work, to meet all modern requirements for writing scientific publications, and clinical research. All in all, It will help to enhance the University’s international status and visibility.

– What would you like to wish Russian scientists?

– First of all, ambitious goals and non-standard solutions. It is necessary for outstanding scientific achievements that open up new areas of knowledge and provide new opportunities for practical use of science.

  • About Us We connect people, place and community. Our programs encourage sustainable living, provide experiential learning, and offer opportunities for serving in our community, while actively protecting and restoring our natural resources. Visit Our Nature Center and enjoy trails, wetlands, outdoor art, Bikes for Tikes and more. PCEI has four main program areas: Restoration, Education, Nature Center, and AmeriCorps. The Restoration Program is dedicated to increasing public education about watershed conservation and increasing public involvement in watershed decisions. The Restoration Program works to preserve, protect and restore ecosystems in the Palouse-Clearwater region. This work includes riparian and wetland restoration, Palouse Prairie rehabilitation, watershed planning, water quality protection, biological monitoring, and a focus on native plants and wildlife. Projects are collaborative in nature and are always science-based and community- centered. PCEI offers a variety of quality educational programs to schools, community groups, and adults. We focus on increasing awareness and knowledge of issues important to Palouse watersheds and ecosystems, developing critical thinking skills and engaging participants in service projects that restore or enhance current watershed conditions. Our programs are highly interactive, place-based and promote hands-on exploration of the natural world. The PCEI AmeriCorps program places AmeriCorps members to complete projects that engage members of their communities in Sustainable Community Planning and Conservation. The overall project goal is to increase citizen behavior that leads to conservation of natural resources and sustainable community planning. Members will engage citizens of all ages, in an effort to ensure buy-in, ownership and an ethic of environmental stewardship. Visitors are always welcome at the PCEI Nature Center! Located in Moscow, Idaho, our 17.4-acre Nature Center is open dawn to dusk 7 days a week. Enjoy many unique features such as: nature trails, universally accessibly pathway, wetlands, outdoor art, sustainable living projects (check out the Jim LaFortune Memorial “Groover” and the Nancy Taylor Stage and Pavilion), Bikes for Tikes and more!
  • Our Impact Our work is to try to turn our on the ground projects into a community building exercise as well. In the long run, because we use volunteers, and get people involved on an emotional level, it has the long-term benefit of being a more sustainable project. People become invested in the work.
