How to craft a strong resume and cover letter to teach abroad

avatar icon

As you already know, creating a positive first impression is key to landing any job, and nabbing a coveted position to teach abroad is no different . However, if you’ve never applied to an international school before, you may have no clue how to impress a potential employer and increase your chances of nabbing a job offer.

No worries, we’ve got the inside scoop. Follow the tips below to maximize your odds of landing a teaching job abroad—and start a thrilling new chapter in your life!

Let’s start with the resume

Let’s start off with learning how to draft an unbeatable resume. We recommend writing your resume first because it’s essentially the blueprint for your cover letter, as it features relevant work experience, skills, and education. If you try to write your cover letter first, you’re bound to forget some key details!

Now, it’s important to clarify that the ideal teaching resume isn’t a resume at all. Rather, it’s a curriculum vitae (or CV), named after the Latin phrase that means “the course of one’s life”.

A CV is longer than your standard resume and it contains a greater level of detail. This distinction is important because newbie teachers often lack traditional teaching experience . Writing a CV, instead of a resume, allows you to expand on the reasons why you would be an exceptional teacher, such as academic honors, volunteer experience, and language skills.

Basic Information

In the United States or Canada, you would never disclose your gender or marital status on a CV. However, other countries don’t necessarily have the same privacy laws or customs as North America, so be prepared to get personal on your teaching CV. Also, factors such as your age, are important in determining whether you would qualify for a work visa so it’s understandable that schools will need to know this information upfront.

Information you may need to disclose on your CV will vary from country to country, but it could include:

  • Citizenship and nationality
  • Marital status
  • Any valid work or residency visas

Profile picture

Certain countries, especially in Asia, are keen to see what their future teachers look like. So, including a headshot-style photo on your CV is a great way to get your application noticed. It’s best to have your photo taken professionally. However, if funds are tight, a friend with a good quality camera will suffice.

Put your TEFL certification first in the “education” section on your CV . Write down the accredited institution that awarded your certificate and how many hours it took to complete.

Next, include your education information, starting with your most recent school. Most international schools require teachers to hold a Bachelor’s degree , so make sure that your education information is clearly noted.

Work Experience

Let’s get into the meat of your CV: your career experience . Start with your most recent position and list your current and past jobs, while clearly stating the employment dates, each company’s name, and its location. Don’t hesitate to include volunteer positions and less formal work—like working as a babysitter, au pair, or camp counselor—especially if you’re in your early 20s and new to the working world. Any experience you have working with children counts!

Go into detail about your responsibilities, along with any accolades you may have earned, with your prospective employer in mind. Shine a spotlight on any information related to teaching, childcare, mentoring, or even working in an international milieu. These details could give you an edge over the competition.

Skills, awards, and extracurriculars

To further enhance your CV, consider adding separate sections for “skills”, “awards”, and “extracurricular activities”. Prospective employers, for instance, want to know if you speak any foreign languages, if you mentor children or volunteer with non-profit organizations, or if your academic or personal accomplishments have been awarded.

Any additional information that demonstrates that you are an independent, well-rounded candidate is applicable here. After all, besides having teaching chops, you must be able to navigate the potential obstacles that arise when you uproot your life to move abroad. Show them how ready you are!

Your next step is writing your teacher cover letter

Cover letter

How to write a cover letter for a teaching job

Now that your resume is ready to impress, let’s tackle your cover letter for teaching . The following list includes certain topics and information that you should address:

  • Lead with the position you’re applying for. In the first sentence of your cover letter, you should clearly state which teaching job you want to be considered for. Don’t make the hiring manager—or your future boss!—hunt around for it.
  • Ditch the “Dear Sir/Madam” opening. Never assume gender when you’re writing a cover letter. If you can’t find who to address it to, simply start with “Dear Hiring Manager” and go from there.
  • Keep it brief. If your cover letter doesn’t fit on one page, you need to do some editing. A single page is enough space to include everything you need to say.
  • Make it personal. Don’t write a generic cover letter with the intention of submitting it to multiple international schools. Recycling a cover letter may speed up the application process, but it won’t give a potential employer the impression you’re enthusiastic about their school or that you have anything special to offer them.
  • Don’t get flowery. Keep in mind that the person reading your cover letter may not be a fluent speaker of English. So, aim to express yourself in clear, concise language.
  • Highlight your relevant experience. Ask yourself, “Why am I the ideal candidate to teach at this school?” Lead with your teaching experience , followed by your knowledge of other countries, such as whether you’ve traveled or lived abroad. Then, discuss your interest in teaching and how their particular school could benefit from hiring you. Make them a pitch they can’t turn down!
  • State your English proficiency. Be sure to include in your cover letter that you’re a fluent English speaker, if you are. Some schools also like to know what accent you have (for example, British vs. North American).
  • Disclose your availability. Let your prospective employer know when you would be available to begin working. For instance, if you’re finishing up your Bachelor’s degree and won’t be done exams until May, make those dates clear.

Putting on the final touches

At this point, your CV and resume should look polished and professional. Follow these three final steps before you click the submit button:

  • Check for spelling errors. Carefully edit your cover letter and CV yourself with the help of a spellcheck program. Afterward, ask a trusted friend to read over your application for errors.
  • Skip the unusual fonts. If you’ve typed up your application in a non-traditional font, do yourself a favor by pressing CTRL+A and switching to a professional typeface like Arial or even Times New Roman. Trust us, it makes a difference.
  • See how your application looks IRL. To ensure your formatting is A-OK, print out your resume and cover letter before applying. Having a hard copy of your application gives you a clear idea of how it will appear to a potential employer. After all, even if you’re submitting online, the school abroad will likely print out the applications to review them.

On a closing note, happy job hunting! With the help of this guide, we hope you’ll soon be embarking on the life-changing adventure of teaching abroad.

Five things you need to know when applying to UAE schools

Teaching overseas, tes editorial.

Tips On Applying For Jobs In The UAE

1. There is more to the UAE than just Dubai

The UAE refers to the United Arab Emirates, which consists of seven emirates or states: Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain. Even though Abu Dhabi and Dubai tend to be the most popular locations, there are schools in the other emirates that also employ expat teachers. The International School Consultancy named the UAE as the second leading country in the world for English-medium international education in 2016, with 641 schools.

2. Schools in the UAE start advertising their jobs earlier than those in the UK

Schools in the UAE have already started recruiting for leadership and senior management roles, while the bulk of teaching position adverts in the UAE tend to start appearing from December/January onwards for the next academic year. Make sure you start updating your CV and cover letter, and keep an eye on Tes’ UAE jobs page .

3. Headteachers in the UAE receive thousands of applications each year

With such stiff competition, your application must be outstanding even to get an interview. This means you must:

  • Highlight your positive skills, talents and experience.
  • Provide your contact details, including your Skype ID and email address.
  • Include all work dates with no gaps in the employment history, as many headteachers will not consider an application if a candidate’s CV has unexplained gaps.
  • List your education and qualifications, with the most recent first.
  • Name referees who are professional, including your current employer.
  • Include a photograph at the top of your CV but make sure it is professional looking.

4. Always apply directly to schools abroad to find a teaching job in the UAE

In my experience –   I’m in my seventh year of living and teaching outside of the UK – you should always apply directly to international schools’ adverts to maximise your chances of finding a great teaching job abroad. Not all UAE schools use agencies to recruit, so you might miss out if you just use an agency.

If you wish to use other job-seeking methods, then do so in addition to your own research when applying directly to vacancies abroad. This will give you as many jobs to choose from as possible. The two teaching jobs I’ve had abroad – in Qatar (2011-15) and Dubai (2016-present) – have been at schools that offer one of the top teaching packages in each of their respective countries. Both of these I found by looking on Tes for myself – if I had relied solely on a teaching agency, I would not have found either of them.

5. You must know what to expect in a good teaching contract and package before saying ‘yes’

Do not accept a job until you have seen the contract. That is perfectly normal in this situation because you are often required to make a two-year commitment and need to know all the details before taking the plunge.

Once you receive the contract, read it very carefully. A good international teaching package would normally include:

  • A competitive salary.
  • Furnished accommodation or a housing allowance.
  • Medical insurance (check if it is just for you or for your spouse and/or children).
  • Visa costs (again, check if it is just for you or for your spouse and/or children).
  • An annual flight allowance, including your flights at the beginning and end of your contract (check if this includes your family).
  • Free school places for one to two dependents, or a tuition allowance if your dependents cannot attend the school where you work.
  • By law, you are entitled to a bonus upon completion of your contract, which works out at one month’s basic salary for each year of continuous service.
  • Some also include a shipping and/or baggage allowance.

Sorcha Coyle has taught at schools in Qatar and the UAE for the past six years. She also runs the Empowering Expat Teachers community, which can be found on her blog .

How to write a cover letter for a teaching job

Cover letters are used to accompany your CV when applying for a teaching job in the UK , and are used to introduce yourself and showcase the skills and qualifications that make you stand out from the competition, as well as outline why you are applying for this particular role, in this particular school.

What do I need to include in my cover letter for a teaching job?

The cover letter should be the part of your application that really sells yourself, while the CV backs up your claims with evidence of your training and experience. Don’t rely on the CV to get you the job, and use the cover letter to exhibit your personality and ambitions.

Introduce yourself

Your cover letter should begin with an introduction. Include your name, what stage of your career you’re at, how long you have been teaching, and what role you’re applying for.

Go into detail

Pick out some of your most spectacular achievements from your CV, and expand on them – what did you do? Why did you do it? What was the result? Bonus points for linking these achievements to the person specification of the role you are applying for.

Take the opportunity to link everything you’ve just described about yourself back to the job description of the role you are applying for. What specific problems is this school facing, and how will your skills help? What strengths does the school have, and how will you add to them? Make sure you mention why you’re interested in this particular role, and what you like about the school.

What should I avoid when writing a cover letter for a teaching job

Sometimes, a good cover letter comes from knowing what not to say, rather than just saying the right thing. You can have the perfect cover letter, but one wrong step will take it from the hands of the decision maker – right into the wastepaper basket!

First of all – don’t oversell yourself! There’s no point in telling a school that you’re interested in a particular sport or extracurricular activities if you can’t hold up to scrutiny in the interview, or worse yet – you can’t run the activities once you get the job. If you’re interested in something but don’t have the experience, your cover letter is a great place to explain that you’d like to grow your skills in that area. Schools will value your honesty and commitment to improving in your career. (They won’t appreciate you wasting their time by claiming to be able to do things you can’t!)

Be clear and concise

Avoid using nice-sounding idyllic statements without any substance to back them up. Every teacher “loves children” or wants to “create the next generation of leaders” – instead focus on what you specifically can do to benefit the pupils in your classroom, and why you have chosen those methods over a different approach.

Pay attention to detail

You could be the greatest teacher in the world, but a cover letter full of formatting errors – or worse, spelling mistakes, won’t get you to the interview stage. Spellcheck is your friend – make sure you check your cover letter for errors, and get a friend or family member to check over your cover letter before you submit it.

When applying for a job , it’s important to have a detailed resume that presents your education, experience, skills, and qualifications. But aside from your resume, it is also important to have a good cover letter , which adds a personal touch to your job application.

Basically, the cover letter introduces you to a potential employer. Through this letter, you can express your interest, highlight some of your skills, and explain why you would be perfect for the job. Keep on reading to learn how to make an eye-catching cover letter!

The cover letter is just as important as your resume

1. Introduction

3. conclusion, job search tip: writing an effective cover letter to attach in your resume.

Like most documents, the cover letter consists of three major parts: introduction, body, and conclusion. Here are some tips for making sure that you get each portion right!

Since this is the first thing that a potential employer will see, your introductory paragraph must be interesting and attention-grabbing! This is your chance to say a few things about your skills and qualifications. You could also mention how you learned about the job opening.

Take a look at the following examples:

“I learned about your job opening while attending a seminar about rescue missions. As I am a certified paramedic, I am interested in applying for the position.”

“I would like to apply for the position of Area Manager. With my extensive experience as a Branch Manager, I believe I am ready to step up to the challenge.”

Your introduction must be interesting and eye-catching

The body of your letter should provide more information about your background, job experience, and noteworthy achievements. It can contain up to three paragraphs. You don’t have to include every detail about yourself (that’s what the resume is for!). Instead, mention only the things that seem relevant to the job that you are seeking.

Here are samples of what you can include in the body:

“While taking my degree in political science, I learned the basic principles of criminal law. This led me to pursue further studies on the subject until I became a defense lawyer.”

“Having worked as a freelance graphic designer for the past five years, I was able to build up my portfolio. It includes book covers, print ads, and even logo designs.”

“My work in the advertising industry has garnered significant recognition. Just last year, the anti-smoking ad campaign I led was awarded by the city government.”

Your letter highlights your skills and qualifications

Similar to the introduction, the conclusion is typically one-paragraph long. The main purpose of this portion is to express thanks as well as to request (indirectly) for a response or follow-up. You can also mention about your resume at this point.

Check out these examples:

“Thank you in advance for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you! Please find attached my resume for you to know more about me.”

“Enclosed is my resume, which provides more information about my skills and experiences. I would also be delighted to come for a personal interview with your company.”

Meanwhile, as a closing address, you may use any of the following terms before signing your name: “Best Wishes, Sincerely, Sincerely Yours, Warm Regards.”

Additional Reminders:

  • Don’t forget to attach your resume!
  • Check for grammar, spelling, and punctuation mistakes.
  • You don’t have to be too formal. Write using a “personal” yet polite tone.
  • Use verbs in their active instead of their passive form (e.g. “I completed the course” instead of “The course was completed by me.”)

A good cover letter increases your chances of landing the job

While it’s necessary to have a resume, a well-crafted cover letter is just as equally important. After all, when applying for a job, you need to present the best things about yourself! By making a good cover letter, you increase the chances of getting an interview and landing the job!

How can MIT’s community leverage generative AI to support learning and work on campus and beyond?

At MIT’s Festival of Learning 2024, faculty and instructors, students, staff, and alumni exchanged perspectives about the digital tools and innovations they’re experimenting with in the classroom. Panelists agreed that generative AI should be used to scaffold — not replace — learning experiences.

This annual event, co-sponsored by MIT Open Learning and the Office of the Vice Chancellor, celebrates teaching and learning innovations. When introducing new teaching and learning technologies, panelists stressed the importance of iteration and teaching students how to develop critical thinking skills while leveraging technologies like generative AI.

“The Festival of Learning brings the MIT community together to explore and celebrate what we do every day in the classroom,” said Christopher Capozzola, senior associate dean for open learning. “This year's deep dive into generative AI was reflective and practical — yet another remarkable instance of ‘mind and hand’ here at the Institute.”

Incorporating generative AI into learning experiences

MIT faculty and instructors aren’t just willing to experiment with generative AI — some believe it’s a necessary tool to prepare students to be competitive in the workforce. “In a future state, we will know how to teach skills with generative AI, but we need to be making iterative steps to get there instead of waiting around,” said Melissa Webster, lecturer in managerial communication at MIT Sloan School of Management.

Some educators are revisiting their courses’ learning goals and redesigning assignments so students can achieve the desired outcomes in a world with AI. Webster, for example, previously paired written and oral assignments so students would develop ways of thinking. But, she saw an opportunity for teaching experimentation with generative AI. If students are using tools such as ChatGPT to help produce writing, Webster asked, “how do we still get the thinking part in there?”

One of the new assignments Webster developed asked students to generate cover letters through ChatGPT and critique the results from the perspective of future hiring managers. Beyond learning how to refine generative AI prompts to produce better outputs, Webster shared that “students are thinking more about their thinking.” Reviewing their ChatGPT-generated cover letter helped students determine what to say and how to say it, supporting their development of higher-level strategic skills like persuasion and understanding audiences.

Takako Aikawa, senior lecturer at the MIT Global Studies and Languages Section, redesigned a vocabulary exercise to ensure students developed a deeper understanding of the Japanese language, rather than just right or wrong answers. Students compared short sentences written by themselves and by ChatGPT and developed broader vocabulary and grammar patterns beyond the textbook. “This type of activity enhances not only their linguistic skills but stimulates their metacognitive or analytical thinking,” said Aikawa. “They have to think in Japanese for these exercises.”

While these panelists and other Institute faculty and instructors are redesigning their assignments, many MIT undergraduate and graduate students across different academic departments are leveraging generative AI for efficiency: creating presentations, summarizing notes, and quickly retrieving specific ideas from long documents. But this technology can also creatively personalize learning experiences. Its ability to communicate information in different ways allows students with different backgrounds and abilities to adapt course material in a way that’s specific to their particular context.

Generative AI, for example, can help with student-centered learning at the K-12 level. Joe Diaz, program manager and STEAM educator for MIT pK-12 at Open Learning, encouraged educators to foster learning experiences where the student can take ownership. “Take something that kids care about and they’re passionate about, and they can discern where [generative AI] might not be correct or trustworthy,” said Diaz.

Panelists encouraged educators to think about generative AI in ways that move beyond a course policy statement. When incorporating generative AI into assignments, the key is to be clear about learning goals and open to sharing examples of how generative AI could be used in ways that align with those goals.

The importance of critical thinking

Although generative AI can have positive impacts on educational experiences, users need to understand why large language models might produce incorrect or biased results. Faculty, instructors, and student panelists emphasized that it’s critical to contextualize how generative AI works. “[Instructors] try to explain what goes on in the back end and that really does help my understanding when reading the answers that I’m getting from ChatGPT or Copilot,” said Joyce Yuan, a senior in computer science.

Jesse Thaler, professor of physics and director of the National Science Foundation Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Fundamental Interactions, warned about trusting a probabilistic tool to give definitive answers without uncertainty bands. “The interface and the output needs to be of a form that there are these pieces that you can verify or things that you can cross-check,” Thaler said.

When introducing tools like calculators or generative AI, the faculty and instructors on the panel said it’s essential for students to develop critical thinking skills in those particular academic and professional contexts. Computer science courses, for example, could permit students to use ChatGPT for help with their homework if the problem sets are broad enough that generative AI tools wouldn’t capture the full answer. However, introductory students who haven’t developed the understanding of programming concepts need to be able to discern whether the information ChatGPT generated was accurate or not.

Ana Bell, senior lecturer of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and MITx digital learning scientist, dedicated one class toward the end of the semester of Course 6.100L (Introduction to Computer Science and Programming Using Python) to teach students how to use ChatGPT for programming questions. She wanted students to understand why setting up generative AI tools with the context for programming problems, inputting as many details as possible, will help achieve the best possible results. “Even after it gives you a response back, you have to be critical about that response,” said Bell. By waiting to introduce ChatGPT until this stage, students were able to look at generative AI’s answers critically because they had spent the semester developing the skills to be able to identify whether problem sets were incorrect or might not work for every case.

A scaffold for learning experiences

The bottom line from the panelists during the Festival of Learning was that generative AI should provide scaffolding for engaging learning experiences where students can still achieve desired learning goals. The MIT undergraduate and graduate student panelists found it invaluable when educators set expectations for the course about when and how it’s appropriate to use AI tools. Informing students of the learning goals allows them to understand whether generative AI will help or hinder their learning. Student panelists asked for trust that they would use generative AI as a starting point, or treat it like a brainstorming session with a friend for a group project. Faculty and instructor panelists said they will continue iterating their lesson plans to best support student learning and critical thinking.

Panelists from both sides of the classroom discussed the importance of generative AI users being responsible for the content they produce and avoiding automation bias — trusting the technology’s response implicitly without thinking critically about why it produced that answer and whether it’s accurate. But since generative AI is built by people making design decisions, Thaler told students, “You have power to change the behavior of those tools.”
