Uwe Kaiser - Geometric and Algebraic Topology, Quantum Computing

Quantum computing algorithms.

This project asks you to have some programming experience. You work on a specific quantum algorithm. You study programming in Microsoft’s quantum computing kit, see https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/quantum/development-kit, try out examples, and study properties of the algorithm. Basic linear algebra skills are necessary in order to understand how algorithms are implemented using circuits. The minimal expectation is a poster to be presented in the senior showcase.

Tangles and Electrical Networks

In 1993 Goldman and Kauffman interpreted the continued fraction of a tangle as a conductance of a corresponding network. This projects asks to search for further relations between electrical networks and invariants of links and tangles. The starting point is a paper of mine on band-operations on links leading to a formula similar to the one by Goldman/Kauffman. Basic linear algebra and some familiarity with discrete mathematics like graph theory are helpful, also knowledge of basic notions concerning electrical networks. The minimal expectation is a poster to be presented in the senior showcase.

Robotics and Topology

Topology and robotics are related through notion of configuration space. For example the configuration space of a robot arm in 3-space is a product of 2-spheres. Restrictions on motions lead to more interesting topology of configuration spaces. The goal is to study the complexity of basic examples through well-known theory developed by Farber. Knowledge of basic topology (for example MATH 411) is necessary for an understanding of the theory. The minimal expectation is a poster to be presented in the senior showcase.

Analysis Situs

In the years 1899 to 1904, Poincare published a paper with the title Analysis Situs and five supplements introducing basic ideas of topology. This project aims to study the way he introduced a particular concept, like e.g. the orientation of a manifold, and to research pre-Poincare origins of this concept (what was a building on?) and how the concept developed into modern times. The prerequisite for this project is the maturity of a senior, the willingness to read old mathematics literature (English translations are available). The expectation is a poster to be presented in the senior showcase.

Broncorank - a new university ranking.

In this project, you will explore the idea of using a PageRank algorithm, which Google is using to rank websites in their search engine, for creating a university ranking which does not depend on some editorial board decision but emerges from each university peer institution lists. You will get a chance to work at an intersection of mathematics, programming, data science, and contribute to creating a more fair tool to rank universities across the U.S.

To be successful in this project, you need some background in programming and ideally have enjoyed your MATH 265 and/or 365 courses. Knowledge of basic linear algebra (matrices) is a plus. The minimum expectation is a poster presentation at Senior Showcase.

The modeling of the interface between ice and the ocean is of utmost importance for climate science. You will experiment with models of ice/ocean boundary developed in my group and evaluate whether they produce physical results. No ocean science background is required, but you should be comfortable with writing simple code. Computational modeling using ODEs and PDEs

The bulk of my work is using computational methods to simulate phenomena described by ordinary or partial differential equations. I am open to your ideas on what you would like to model, and we can create a project based on your input.

You will likely need to be able to program in MATLAB, Python, Julia, or other languages.  Knowing something about ODEs and/or PDEs is welcome. I am also open to problems that yield themselves to Machine Learning. The minimum expectation is a poster presentation at Senior Showcase.

Game of Life, Fractals and self-similarity

You will explore some of the concepts outlined above and write code to implement them. The minimum expectation is a poster presentation at Senior Showcase.

Mathematical Art

You will work with genetic (or other nature-inspired) algorithms that try to generate art. You can either focus on optimization algorithms that try to reproduce existing images or aim to generate original art and try to measure its esthetics. Difference equations and applications.

Difference equations arise naturally in real-world applications involving discrete sets or populations, or as approximations to continuum models in science and engineering. Mathematically, difference equations can be described as mathematical equalities involving the values of a function of a discrete variable. A recurrence relation such as the logistic map, relevant to population dynamics, or the sequence of Fibonacci numbers, are simple examples. Many difference equations can be solved analogously to how one solves ordinary differential equations. However, it is well-known that most difference equations depicting real-life phenomena cannot be solved in closed form and other methods are necessary to obtain qualitative or quantitative information about the desired solutions, including their stability properties. This senior project can go in a number of directions depending upon the interests of the student. Integro-differential equations and applications

Integro-differential equations are central to modelling numerous natural and industrial phenomena across physics, biology, medicine, engineering, and other fields. As an example in the field of epidemiology, integro-differential equations are frequently used in the mathematical modelling of epidemics, such as when the age-structure of the population is important in determining the dynamics of an epidemic. Integro-differential equations involve both integrals and derivatives of a function. As very few systems of integro-differential equations have a closed-form solution, a range of mathematical methods are often used to obtain qualitative information about the solutions of classes of problems involving integro-differential equations, and approximation techniques are often used to obtain quantitative information about the corresponding solutions given some initial data. In contrast to ordinary and partial differential equations, initial data for integro-differential equations is frequently provided on a whole interval, rather than a single initial point in time. This means more initial data is used to supplement systems of integro-differential equations. This senior project can go in a number of directions depending upon the interests of the student. Such qualitative information frequently suffices to answer key questions about a solution’s behaviour. Examples are its long-term behavior, existence and uniqueness, convergence properties, and its upper and lower bounds, such as maximal and minimal solutions. These properties, in turn, help us derive information about not only one, but a whole family of mathematical models constituting a given class of differential equations. This senior project can go in a number of directions depending upon the interests of the student. The project may involve theoretical aspects, including theoretical derivations and proof-writing, or computations, including writing new codes or modifying existing ones.

Principles of approximation and applications

Smooth functions arise frequently in the mathematical modeling of numerous real-world phenomena in the sciences and engineering, including both natural and industrial processes. An example is the solution to a SIR model of susceptible, infectious, or recovered individuals in epidemiology, or solutions to mathematical models of tumor growth. It is well known, however, that solutions to most mathematical models depicting real-world phenomena cannot, in general, be expressed in closed form. It is, however, possible to make progress by making appropriate approximations to obtain an estimate of the desired solution. Such approximations involve discretizing the domain from a continuous interval to a finite subset of grid points, solving the discrete systems of equations, computing continuous extensions, or interpolations, and performing error analysis. There are many ways of doing this, but it is important to understand how to do it in a way that preserves certain desired properties, in order to ensure that the resulting approximate solutions that we are getting are indeed approximate solutions to the problem we started out with, rather than spurious output. Students majoring in mathematics complete a capstone project during their senior year to fulfill the Senior Comprehensive Requirement. The capstone project is either a Senior Comprehensive Project or, for honors students, an Honors Project in mathematics. The capstone project is an opportunity for the student to deeply explore a mathematical topic under the guidance of a faculty member and share their insights with others.

Senior Comprehensive Projects

For a Senior Comprehensive Project, the student works with a professor to select a topic that relates to but goes beyond the usual scope of a 300- or 400-level mathematics course, writes a paper on the topic, and gives a talk based on the paper to students, faculty, and guests. 

Students often select topics that relate to their interests beyond mathematics. For example, a student minoring in finance may choose a mathematical topic that relates to finance.

The student takes the one-credit course MATH 492 during their graduation semester.

Honors Projects

The Honors Project is a year-long endeavor in which an honors student works intensively on the definition and solution of a scholarly problem, or on the development of a creative work. The honors student’s work is guided by an adviser and submitted to two readers for approval. Upon completion, it is publicly presented to interested faculty, students and guests.

An Honors Project in mathematics with a grade of C or better fulfills the Senior Comprehensive Requirement.

An honors student takes the three-credit course HON 498/499 during their senior year. Further details about a Degree with Honors are provided in the Honors Program website .

Recent Capstone Projects by Mathematics Students

Teddy Bishop: “Data Analytics in Baseball.” Mentor: Dr. Michael Klucznik.

Teddy played catcher for the Bonnies baseball team, so it was natural that his project applied math to his favorite sport. He explained that in recent years the technique of data analytics has become ubiquitous in Major League Baseball. Teddy used the method and the program R to show how pitchers can refine their strategies against different types of batters. Each attendee of Teddy's talk was treated to a box of Cracker Jacks.

Erica Low: “Elliptic Curve Cryptography: An Efficient Cryptosystem and Its Applications.” (Honors Project) Mentor: Dr. Chris Hill.

Erica began by providing background on private and public key cryptography and on elliptic curves. She then described in detail the elliptic curve cryptosystem (ECC) and explained how ECC is more "efficient" than the more commonly used RSA. Erica concluded her project with applications of ECC to e-commerce. She noted that Best Buy and Home Depot use ECC on their websites, but not yet SBU...

Ben MacConnell: “Symmetries of Noncommutative Algebras.” Mentor: Dr. Christine Uhl.

Ben's work was inspired by open questions posed in a paper by Chelsea Walton. He found the symmetries of a three-dimensional q-polynomial algebra and investigated the symmetries of the split-quaternion algebra. Ben described the connections of this material to quantum mechanics, nicely tying together his dual majors in math and physics.

Gillian MacNeil : “Orthogonality in Sudoku Latin Squares.” Mentor: Dr. Maureen Cox

Gillian observed that Sudoku grids—solutions to the wildly popular Sudoku puzzles—are special cases of Latin squares. She then applied group theory to count pairs of mutually orthogonal Sudoku grids.

Students and faculty watched Hannah's spring 2020 senior math presentation by Zoom.

Alison Garlock: “Understanding the Rubik's Cube through Group Theory.” Mentor: Dr. Christine Uhl.

Alison used group theory to analyze the moves of the classic Rubik’s puzzle. Her project culminated with a theorem characterizing which “states” of the cube could be reached by legal moves. (Side note: Alison can solve a Rubik’s cube in under two minutes, which proved invaluable to a certain mentor.)

Sarah Kone: “Oscillation and Continuity.” Mentor: Dr. Maureen Cox.

Sarah characterized the set of points of continuity and the set of points of discontinuity of a real-valued function defined on a closed interval. Using a detailed analysis of the oscillation of a function, she showed that the set of points of continuity is always a countable intersection of open sets and that the set of points of discontinuity is always a countable union of closed sets.

Hannah Schifley: “Coronavirus in New York State.” Mentor: Dr. Maureen Cox.

Hannah employed the SIR model of three differential equations and real-world data to analyze the spread of the virus in New York. Her timely project predicted possible outcomes of the pandemic in our state.

Ethan McKeone: “What do turtles, the cube root of 2, and paper folding all have in common? The Beloch Fold.” Mentor: Dr. Christine Uhl.

Ethan's project focused on Margharita P. Beloch's discovery in 1936 that origami, that is, paper-folding constructions, can be used to solve general cubic equations. He applied the method to show how paper-folding can be used to solve the classic problem of doubling the cube, a problem that is impossible to solve using traditional straightedge-and-compass constructions.

Spencer Mummery: “Cryptography and the RSA Algorithm.” Mentor: Dr. Chris Hill.

Spencer's project explored the RSA (Rivest-Shamir-Adleman) public key cryptosystem. After a brief overview of the history of cryptography, Spencer provided the required background on modular arithmetic and discussed some key results on primality and factoring. He then proved that the RSA decryption algorithm works and provided an example. Spencer concluded with some of the vulnerabilities of RSA.

6 Tips for Engaging Capstone Projects

Rather than creating a year-in-review capstone project, consider having students synthesize and personalize what they’ve learned, bringing it to a new level.

A group of young students are standing in a line on dead grass. It's overcast. There are bare-branched trees and a river nearby. They're holding black and green tablets. Their male teacher is holding antlers, letting the students take turns touching it.

It’s that time of the year, the race to the finish, only weeks until school ends for the summer (at least for many of us). With the pressures of testing behind us, we often have a bit more freedom to create curriculum and activities for students. We can try out new ideas, give students more choice in what they want to learn, and celebrate the learning that we've accomplished this year. One way that many educators like to do these things is through capstone projects, year-end culminations that often invite students to engage in choosing what they want to learn, as well as how they learn it. Capstone projects are a great tool for personalizing learning, and they're effective for creating even more student engagement. Here are some tips to create excellent capstone projects.

Ensure "Main Course, Not Dessert"

This is always a good reminder. While capstone projects often draw on the entire year's learning, it's important to pose this question to students as well as reflecting upon it ourselves as educators: What new learning will occur in this capstone project? This is key to ensuring that a capstone project isn't simply a fun activity (although that's still a good intention), and it helps in creating a project that's more challenging and truly focused on new learning and experiences. This new learning could be in a different context or topic from what the class has done so far, it might require a variety of skills that they haven't previously combined, or it could be a synthesis of sorts. Reflect on how you can ensure that there will be new learning in your capstone projects.

Take It To Another Level

Projects should focus on depth, not breadth. If you have the ability to allow students choice in what they learn, consider having them revisit a previously learned concept, topic, or skill. To ensure not only engagement but also "Main Course," create rubrics with students that focus on their going deeper into the content. Instead of "meeting standard," focus the assessment and learning on "exceeding standard." When students engage with a challenge, we should take them beyond the opportunity to review learning by pushing the learning even farther in a capstone project.

More Voice and Choice

This is nothing new, but we can always think of new ways to offer choice to our students. At the end of the year, after we've pressed through most of our required curriculum and standards, we may have some wiggle room on what students can learn. We might offer choice in one way, but not in another. Perhaps we want to spiral review a writing skill for all students, but offer them a choice in what history topic they want to learn about. Or we might need students to learn a math concept that we haven't yet covered in the curriculum, but they can choose how they want to learn it and connect that concept to the real world. Have students make personal, meaningful choices. See my previous blog about voice and choice for ideas about how to create more engagement.

Make a Difference

One of my favorite ways of taking capstone projects to another level is through service and making a difference. When students see that their work matters, they will be engaged. There are, of course, lots of opportunities to make an impact outside of the walls of the classroom, whether in the community or globally. There are also great ways for students to make a difference in their own lives once they understand the personal impact that's possible. Start by asking then how they want to make a difference in their capstone projects.

Tell the Full Story Through Assessment

Often, capstone projects involve what could be called a portfolio of student learning, which includes many steps in their yearlong journey. These assessments, graded or not, are valuable artifacts that serve as a photo album of a learning continuum, rather than simple snapshots representing individual moments of learning. Capstone projects are about growth, and both teachers and students can use assessments from the capstone project as well as earlier in the year to celebrate the growth in learning. Students, parents, and teachers deserve to see this growth in order to be proud of their learning from the entire year as well as during the capstone project.

Experiment With "No Grades"

Often we use grades as a way to get students to learn rather than addressing a root problem -- our students are not engaged. While you might want to grade students on their work, you might also try the experiment of moving students away from grades as a motivator, and instead focus on the learning. Rather grading every part of the capstone project, consider grading only the capstone component. This is also in ideal place to start the conversation with students about how they want to be and should be graded. Consider using capstone projects to start a culture shift away from grades and toward learning.

I love implementing and watching students implement capstone projects. I'm inspired by the ways that teachers structure these projects and by the amazing learning that students share. The main goal for the MATH 599 capstone is to help you explore as many aspects of teaching math as possible. Through the course you will become a more knowledgeable consumer of math education research, you will establish a list of core teaching attributes personalized to your teaching style, and you will work to bring your teaching philosophy to life with new approaches and activities for your classroom.

During the course, you undertake a series of activities focused on teaching practice, as well as learning what math education can tell us about teaching math. These activities are described in detail below.

MATH 599 features an additional series of activities involving, for instance, a study of TIMSS (Trends in International Math and Science Study), activities involving Dan Meyer’s Three Act Math, James Tanton’s Thinking Math Series, and Nix the Tricks, the Singapore Model Method, among others. The philosophy of MATH 599 is that the more exposure you have to teaching ideas and perspectives, the better equipped you will be in terms of developing your own effective style for teaching math well.

Math Education Seminar Series

During the Math Education Seminar Series, you will learn how research in math education can provide insight into the art of teaching.  After an introduction to education research by a math professor from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, you will be asked to select a topic of personal interest to focus on.  After using Harvard’s library resources to identify at least a dozen background sources for your topic, you will then put the various research results into context by writing a 12 to 15 page summary paper analyzing the current state of knowledge about your topic.  

As part of the math education project, you will also be asked to lead a seminar discussion in class, distributing two articles related to your topic to the class to read before your seminar, along with a set of discussion questions. 

In the past, participants have shared their math education papers with the rest of the class by exchanging a bound copy of all of the papers at the end of the semester.

Alternative Math Teaching Experiment

As teachers, we often end up teaching the way that we have been taught.  In order to discover the most effective ways to teach, and to become an innovative teacher, it’s important to experiment with different approaches now and then. During the class, everyone will be given the opportunity to try alternative approaches for teaching math topics. After being asked about the way you typically approach your teaching or tutoring, you will then be challenged to create a teaching activity featuring a new approach, something “outside your comfort zone” either exploring a teaching element that you have felt unsure about using before, or something you have always wanted to try but didn’t feel that you had the time to experiment with.  You might also choose to work with particular props or teaching tools that you have been considering but haven’t been able to use yet.

During the semester, one participant will be scheduled for each class meeting to share their teaching activity with the rest of the class who will act as practice students. After each alternative teaching experiment, two members of the class will be asked to give constructive feedback via email, after which the person who led the activity will be asked to think about how the experiment went and provide a debrief about the experience.

Teaching with Technology Project

In the final part of the course, you will get an opportunity to work with your choice of math teaching technology (e.g. graphing calculators, PRS systems, smartphone or iPad apps, CAS, GeoGebra, Desmos, Mathematica, etc.). The goal is for you to experiment with something you have been interested in but haven’t had the time or resources to use in your own teaching yet (or perhaps have tried out to a limited extent already, but want to expand your use with).

The class will be organized into groups of teachers exploring similar technologies with the joint objective of creating a series of lesson plans incorporating the technology.  The goal is to explore how well the technology can be used to support effective math teaching. 

The final class meetings of the Teaching Projects course will feature presentations by each technology group, demonstrating the various technologies and sharing highlights of the lesson plans with everyone in the class.

Each student in the secondary teaching concentration will complete a capstone project (MAT 5520). The preliminary work involved in selecting a topic, learning about human subject research, and building a literature review should be completed during enrollment in Investigations in Teaching Mathematics (MAT 5910). The project must be carried out in a high school mathematics classroom, with the active participation of a practicing teacher if the student is not currently teaching.

Goals and Guiding Principles

The Capstone Project (the focus of MAT 5420 Capstone Project in Secondary Education) is designed to be a culminating experience for students in the MA in Mathematics, Secondary Teaching concentration, integrating the knowledge and expertise gained over the course of the program with their work in the classroom. The project is typically completed near the end of the program, after successful completion of MAT 5910 Investigations in Teaching Mathematics. The teacher will apply their knowledge of mathematics, of teaching, and of mathematics education research to the systematic investigation of their classroom practice. 

Goal: Candidates demonstrate and apply knowledge of research-based practices in a project that impacts high school mathematics teaching and learning.

During completion of MAT 5420, students will build upon their efforts in MAT 5910 to:

develop familiarity with research on mathematics teaching and learning along with techniques for finding, understanding, critically analyzing, and applying that research;

develop techniques for sustainably assessing, understanding, and improving one’s own practice in teaching mathematics.

The specific Student Learning Outcomes to be assessed are as follows:

SLO 1: Candidates design and implement a project exemplifying one or more of the following CAEP Standard A.1 focus areas, with direct involvement of high school mathematics students, teachers and/or administrators.

  • Use of research and implementation of appropriate research methodologies to examine an issue that arises in the mathematics classroom;
  • Employment of data analysis and evidence to develop supportive mathematics classrooms;
  • Development of professional activities designed to impact the mathematics classroom, and implementation with others such as peers, colleagues, teachers, administrators, community organizations, or parents;
  • Supporting appropriate applications of digital media and/or technology in the mathematics classroom.

 SLO 2: Candidates explain their approach to and appraise the results of their project through the lens of research related to their project.  

SLO3: Candidates disseminate their results through a professional report and presentation, including a summary of their project plan, research foundation, implementation, results, and conclusions.

These outcomes will be assessed through a research-based investigative project in which the teacher investigates an aspect of his or her mathematics teaching practice. The investigation will be research-based in the sense that it will be informed and inspired by high-quality mathematics research. However, it is not meant to imitate the formal research procedures of a thesis. Rather, emphasis shall be placed on systematically analyzing one’s own practice in a manner that allows the teacher to develop a deeper understanding of teaching and learning, ultimately leading to improved student learning.

Professional Standards Satisfied

The capstone project or thesis will be used as evidence in the student’s Product of Learning. It will demonstrate evidence of North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards, 

Standard 3: “Teachers know the content they teach,” particularly those elements of the standard that indicate knowledge of “content appropriate to their teaching specialty, recognition of “the interconnectedness of content areas/disciplines, and making “instruction relevant to students.” 

Standard 4: “Teachers facilitate learning for their students.” The capstone project or thesis may also serve as evidence in the Product of Learning of other standards, depending on the particular topic and investigation. 

Paper and Oral Presentation

Every capstone project will include both a paper and an oral presentation. Because formats of the project may differ, the specific format of these products may differ somewhat from student to student. However, each should communicate the following:

  • Familiarity with the relevant research that serves as a basis for the project, communicating important results or frameworks and their relationship to the work undertaken in the capstone project. The paper, in particular, should articulate how this research has led to the decisions made in the capstone project.
  • A discussion of the design of the project, justifying methodological choices.
  • A communication of the results and implications, with emphasis on what was learned about student learning and how the project will impact classroom practice.
  • A plan for extending the project for continued growth in teaching practice.

Possible Formats

The capstone project may take a variety of forms, some of which are discussed at the end of this document. However, all projects must:

  • focus on the mathematics classroom and student learning of mathematics
  • include an examination of relevant literature and provide evidence of understanding the research methodologies that influence the design of the project.
  • include both a paper and an oral presentation/defense of the product in an open forum of university faculty, student peer, and/or professional practitioners

The specific capstone project is to be developed in by the student beginning in MAT 5910 and in consultation with the student's capstone advisor. The following are recommended formats, although other formats, based in or originating from high-quality mathematics education research, are possible. Any format should be based on a formal research methodology, of which the student is expected to convey understanding.

Thesis Option

At the student's discretion, and in consultation with the graduate coordinator and capstone advisor, he or she may choose to develop the capstone project into a Master's Thesis. The thesis will satisfy the requirements of the capstone project but should embody high-quality mathematics education research. The goals and aims of the project are similar, but a thesis option student assumes greater responsibility for defining a conceptual basis for their project, identifying epistemological assumptions and their consequences, and for examining and utilizing relevant literature in order to justify and precisely define their methodology. In short, whereas a capstone project is described as informal research, a thesis should follow the principles of formal mathematics education research.

Relevant Standards

Informal Action Research

Action research is often used as a catch-all term for teachers investigating their own practice, but it does have a well-defined theoretical basis in literature. In one of the earliest descriptions of the process, Corey (1954) introduces the term as follows: " Action research in education is research undertaken by practitioners in order that they may improve their practices. The people who actually teach children or supervise teachers or administer school systems attempt to solve their practical problems by using the methods of science" (p. 375). The important defining characteristics of action research then, are the definition of a practical problem related to improving professional teaching practice and the systematic collection of data to address the problem and improve practice (Parsons & Brown, 2002). A student engaged in a capstone project utilizing informal action research should begin by defining an issue they would like to address, then investigate relevant sources in the research literature in order to design a process for collecting and analyzing data – quantitative, qualitative, or both – that will offer insight into the problem at hand.

Curriculum Development and Analysis

In a curriculum development project, the teacher-researcher plans and enacts a curriculum in the classroom, analyzing its impact and effectiveness. Curriculum here is defined according to Clements (2007) definition: "a specific set of instructional materials that order content used to support pre-K-grade 12 classroom instruction" (p. 36). The field of curriculum design and assessment is extensive, and a student undertaking a curriculum development project should expect to develop familiarity with important principles before working to design curriculum. Clements (2007) identifies a Curriculum Research Framework consisting of three phases:

  • A priori foundations : In this phase, the subject matter and pedagogical bases of the curriculum are established. The guiding principles and reasons for decisions are well-established.
  • Learning model : Here, existing research and prior knowledge are consulted in constructing a model for student thinking and learning specific to the particular subject addressed in the curriculum.
  • Evaluation : In the evaluation phase, curriculum standards, guidelines, standards, and audience factors are considered, and field tests are conducted to refine the curriculum.

It should be noted that these phases are not distinct but part of an interwoven cycle. For instance, some evaluation will take place even during the foundations stage, and each phase will be revisited multiple times. A student engaging in a curriculum development project might choose a unit or topic for the focus of the project. Limiting the subject matter focus of the project permits a sufficient level of detail and analysis. The project should address all three phases of Clements' (2007) framework, justifying curricular decisions through established research knowledge, developing learning models, and evaluating the curriculum. It is possible that a student may choose to devote more attention to a certain phase if they develop more original or unique approaches to a specific aspect of curriculum development. For instance, if a student develops new models for learning a particular subject instead of drawing on previously-established models, the project may address that phase in more depth than others.

Informal Teaching Experiment

A teaching experiment is a method for investigating the impact on teaching techniques or approaches on students' learning and understanding of mathematics. Steffe and Thompson (2000) describe the methodology as follows: "It is primarily an exploratory tool, derived from Piaget's clinical interview and aimed at exploring students' mathematics ... the teaching experiment is directed toward understanding the progress students make over extended periods. ... In this, it is a living methodology designed initially for the exploration and explanation of students' mathematical activity" (p. 273).

Teaching experiments are based on the understanding that individual students construct their own conceptions of mathematics independent of the mathematical understandings of teachers and other students (though a students' conceptions are certainly shaped by interactions with others). A teaching experiment, then, is an opportunity to investigate and analyze students' mathematical understanding. It differs from a curriculum development project in focus. A curriculum development project is primarily focused on analyzing the curriculum and instructional approach, whereas a teaching experiment is primarily focused on analyzing student thinking and knowledge. In many cases, this is done by an in-depth analysis of student cognition as students engage in learning mathematics in a single classroom, or by comparing student learning in two classes where different approaches are taken. In either case, attention should be paid to the fact that the lack of randomized assignment of students and other factors contributes to problems of generalizability. Nevertheless, teaching experiments provide valuable information to those who teach mathematics. A capstone project that adopts a teaching experiment approach will identify a domain of mathematical knowledge that is of particular interest and design a method for investigating and analyzing how students come to learn or understand a particular topic or in a particular context.

In-depth analysis of a single, well-bounded case can often provide a level of detail that isn't available with other types of projects. Though there are a variety of ways of conceptualizing case study, a prototypical case study may be defined by characteristics listed by VanWynsberghe and Khan (2007):

  • Intensive and in-depth focus on a small sample, such as a single classroom or a very small number of students,
  • Highly detailed context, carefully descriptions of the particular instance,
  • Natural settings where the researcher does not exert control over organization or behavior. VanWynsberghe & Kahn note that "case study is uniquely suitable for research in complex settings because it advances the concept that complex settings cannot be reduced to simple cause and effect relationships." (p.4)
  • Bounded by a specific time frame or particular context.
  • Working hypotheses are constructed during data collection and analysis. A case study is not designed to test a hypothesis, but understanding of a phenomenon emerges over the course of the study.
  • Drawing from multiple sources of data.

Critics of case study research point to the fact that the reliance on a single case means the conclusions of such a study are not necessarily generalizable. While true, this does not mean that case studies do not produce generalizations. Indeed, much of our individual knowledge is drawn from specific cases, and case studies can be instrumental in generating theories and disproving theories (Flyvbjerg, 2001). See Erlwanger's (1973) case study of a student's fraction arithmetic rules in a self-guided curriculum or Raymond's (1997) case study of a teacher's practice mirroring her own experience as a student instead of her teacher preparation program for two excellent examples of how case studies have served such a role in mathematics education research.

A capstone project adopting a case study approach will identify a phenomenon (perhaps a lesson, a class, a few students, a single student, a single teacher) that is of interest, justifying the focus on that particular case. The project should then seek to collect a variety of data in order to describe the case and generate working hypotheses throughout the process. The final product will include a rich description of the case along with supporting evidence and lessons learned from the research.

Faculty in the Georgia College Mathematics Department have research interests in variety of branches of mathematics and mathematics education. The following faculty descriptions offer students a glimpse at these interests relative to directing senior capstone projects.

Dr. Angel Abney's  research interests include preservice teachers’ models of students’ mathematics, effectiveness of preservice teacher education, mathematical knowledge for teaching, mathematical knowledge needed for teaching teachers and keeping women and minorities in the mathematical pipeline.

Dr. Martha Allen’s  areas of interest include number theory and cryptography. Previous projects have included examining a collection of proofs of the infinitude of the primes and investigating why primes are important, investigating the impact of ciphers on World War I and World War II, researching a modern day application of Euler’s Theorem, and considering applications of primitive roots and discrete logarithms in cryptography. A student desiring to work on a project with Dr. Allen should exhibit a strong work ethic, be highly self-motivated, be fluent in mathematical writing, and be proficient in LaTeX. In addition, to conduct research in number theory, a student should have successfully completed MATH 4110, and to conduct research in cryptography, a student should have taken or concurrently be taking MATH 4110 while enrolled in MATH 4989.

Dr. Guy Biyogmam's  research interests lie mainly in the field of non-associative algebras, combined with the areas of Leibniz Algebras, Algebraic Topology, Leibniz (Co)Homology, Invariant Theory and Homological Algebra. Possible projects will consist of using the Pirashvili spectral sequence to detect (non) relativistic invariants, which may be useful in the calculation of the Leibniz (co)homology of abelian extensions of semisimple Leibniz algebras. He also has some interest for BCK-algebras, Racks, Fuzzy set theory, and multilinear Lie algebras. These fields can generate several undergraduate projects. Some projects under my supervision to browse through are: "A study of subracks" (American Journal of Undergraduate Research, 13(2) (2014), 19-27) and "Centers of some non relativistic Lie algebra" (Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal, Vol. 16, Issue 1, 2015).

Dr. George Cazacu’s  research interests include general topology, dynamical (poly)systems and stability theory, as well as algorithm complexity. He is tackling the P vs. NP problem in the hope that one day he will be able to fully understand it. A student interested in research under his guidance would have a considerable pool of topics to pick from, varying from rigorous understanding of abstract topological notions to attacking open problems or special, less explored cases of attractors in dynamical (poly)systems, or the study of some NP problems.

Dr. Marcela Chiorescu's  areas of research interest are in abstract algebra and its applications (in particular commutative algebra), in the history of mathematics (in particular the history of mathematics in Japan and China) and in the connection between mathematics and art (in particular the connection between mathematics and temari). A student desiring to work on a project on any of these areas should have successfully completed at least MATH 3030 and be proficient in LaTeX.

Dr. Rachel Epstein’s  primary area of research interest is mathematical logic, and in particular, computability theory.  In addition, she is interested in the connections between mathematics and origami, the history of mathematics around the world, and the application of mathematics to social issues such as gerrymandering and voting.  To say more about computability theory, it is the study of what is computable by a theoretical idealized computer (or Turing machine) and what isn’t.   Within the realm of the non-computable, we can classify mathematical objects such as real numbers by how much information they contain.  Computability theory can be applied to many areas of mathematics, such as abstract algebra or graph theory, as well as studied on its own.  To work on problems in computability theory, the only prerequisite would be Foundations of Mathematics (MATH 3030).  A subfield of computability theory that is closely linked to computer science is the study of randomness.  To work on randomness, Probability (MATH 4600) would be useful.  Other topics in mathematical logic include set theory, model theory, and Godel’s Incompleteness Theorems.  Students with an interest in computer science, philosophy, psychology, or physics could work on topics that combine computability theory or mathematical logic with those disciplines.

Dr. Susmita Sadhu's  research interest is in dynamical systems (differential equations) and its applications. More specifically, her research can be broadly classified into two sets: (i) studying and interpreting the behavior of solutions of nonlinear boundary value problems (which are ordinary differential equations with certain boundary conditions imposed on them), (ii) qualitatively analyzing and geometrically visualizing solutions of systems of differential equations that model some physical, biological or ecological phenomena. A student interested in learning classical theory of differential equations or interested in studying a problem that model an  ecological or a biological process should be comfortable with the material from one of the above sets. Mathematical tools such as Maple, MATLAB, XPPAUT will be frequently used and will be taught to the student. Programming capabilities are desirable, though not required.  Interested students are strongly encouraged to look at some undergraduate journals to get a sense of the nature of research done in this field.  Some possible papers to browse through are: "A predator prey model with disease dynamics" (Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Math Journal, vol 4, issue 1, 2003), "Long term dynamics for two three-species food web" (Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Math Journal, vol 4, issue 2,  2003), and "Introducing a scavenger onto a predator prey model" (Applied Math E-Notes, 2007), etc.

Dr. Brandon Samples'  areas of interest include representation theory (representing objects using methods of linear algebra), abstract algebra, number theory, graph theory, and mathematics education. A student wanting to work on a project with Dr. Samples in the pure mathematics setting should be interested and comfortable with material from at least a subset of the above mentioned branches of mathematics. A search of undergraduate mathematics journals (Rose-Hulman, College Math Journal, etc.) should allow the student to generate some possible topics. Previous projects have included topics coming from the study of Lie algebras associated to finite groups, combinatorics of finite graphs, generalized Fibonacci sequences, and generalizations of the Frobenius problem in number theory. A student wanting to work on a project within the realm of mathematics education should have thought about potential topics and searched the literature to get an idea of a possible framework. To get started, the student should have already looked at some mathematics education papers to get a sense for the nature of mathematics education research. Previous projects have included an analysis of conceptual versus procedural understanding in the context of story problems as well as assessing the efficacy of various teaching manipulatives at the undergraduate level.

Dr. Doris Santarone's  research interests lie in the areas of mathematical knowledge for teaching of inservice and preservice teachers, the mathematics content knowledge of preservice and inservice teachers, the mathematical knowledge needed for preservice teacher educators, and the evaluation of projects and programs for mathematics preservice teacher education.

Dr. Simplice Tchamna’s  primary area of interest is abstract algebra. He is interested in topics in commutative algebra.  Commutative algebra is the area of mathematics that studies commutative rings and other related topics such as module theory. Many areas of modern mathematics such as number theory, homological algebra, algebraic geometric, etc., use results from commutative algebra. A student wanting to work with him should complete (with at least a grade C) the two courses Math 3030 (Foundations of Mathematics) and Math 4081 (Abstract Algebra). He is also available to work with students wanting to explore topics in statistics. He is interested in techniques of collecting data to make predictions. In this case, the student should complete the two courses Math 1262 (Calculus I) and Math 2600 (Probability and Statistics).
