Some People think that the government is wasting money on the arts and that this money could be better spent elsewhere. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Governments all over the world are grappling with problems like rising unemployment and growing threats of terrorism. Poverty is still a major issue in many countries in Asia, Latin America and Africa. In such a scenario, the argument that the government should stop wasting money on arts might sound logical. However, in my opinion, arts do have a place in the society. While I don’t think that the government should waste a lot of money on arts, it should at least adopt a benevolent attitude towards arts and artists.

Contrary to popular belief, arts are not a waste of time. In fact, they are also an industry with great potential to generate money. Performance arts, for instance, enjoy considerable following. A music concert or a dance show featuring an accomplished singer or dancer can create a lot of jobs. Arts can also help sell a country as a tourist destination. For example, the Indian government actively uses traditional arts forms to promote tourism in the country. India’s classical dance forms like Bharatanatyam and Kathakali have enthralled audience all over of the world and attract thousands of international tourists to the nation. The influx of tourists creates jobs and helps the local economy.

Paintings and sculptures also have huge commercial value. Millions of people visit museums in Spain, Italy and Holland to admire the works of masters like Vincent Van Gog, Picasso and Salvador Daly. While these artists are no longer around, their timeless works are still earning a lot of money for their countries. Nations that promote their ethic arts and crafts also tend to enjoy good reputation overseas.

To conclude, while it is true that spending money on imparting education and building infrastructure is more important than promoting arts, in my opinion, the government should still do whatever it can to promote and sustain arts. Art forms, especially those that have a huge following, benefit the national economy in many ways.

In the contemporary world, it seems to be “all about money.” However, it is important not to lose sight of what is important; we must maintain good physical and mental health and healthy relationships with the people around us. “Imagine the world without money. We will eventually come to a point where we will be asking questions like “what’s the point of life”. Hope and goals are some of the important things that will keep a man going in life. Without any sense of achievement or motivation, there wouldn’t be any inventions or progress in the world. People work to get money and then people work harder to get more money. This cycle of life that keeps a man motivated and hopeful is one of the biggest advantages of the system of money”

This essay gives readers a general outlook on money and its advantages and disadvantages. It gives people equal opportunity to work for their dreams and motivates them to be productive members of society, while it also raises the question of greed. Money, without a doubt, has its positive and negative aspects, but it exists and is only becoming more critical.

“But the barter economy was flawed. There was no universal measure for determining the value of an item. It was all based on the subjective opinion of the individuals involved. And to make matters worse, the barter economy relied on both sides wanting something the other had to offer. Trade, therefore, could be sluggish and frustrating. Human beings needed something different, and money was the answer.”

Wilkins writes about how money revolutionized the way trade was conducted. The barter system involved trading any objects if both parties agreed to a deal, such as trading animal skins for fish or medicine for timber. However, the only measure of an item’s value was how much one party wanted it- both sides needed to have something the other wanted. The introduction of money allowed people to put a solid value on commodities, making trade easier.

“So, if you were to closely observe the dirty, disordered canvas of economic progress during the 20th and 21 st century, you should conclude that, for all its warts, capitalism has been the winner. It has sometimes caused pain; suffered from serious cycles; and often needed the clout of the state- such as we have seen from September 2008. It has also been quite resistant to sensible regulation. Even so, the basic institutions of capitalism have worked, not just in the US and the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and development) nations, but also many developing countries, of which India is one.”

Albeit lengthy, Montgomery’s essay discusses the debate between socialism and capitalism, a topic of which money is at the core. Montgomery describes Karl Marx’s criticism of capitalism: all the money goes to a few people, not the workers. She believes these are valid to an extent and criticizes certain forms of capitalism and socialism. Neither capitalism nor socialism is perfect, but according to Montgomery, capitalism creates a better economy.

Higgins implores readers to remember that money is not the only thing people need in the world. He stresses the necessity of money, as it is used to pay for various necessary goods and services; however, he believes it is not a prerequisite for happiness. Material things are temporary, and there are other things we should focus on, like family and friends.

5. An Introduction to Saving Money by Jeremy Vohwinkle

“A financial emergency may take the form of a job loss, significant medical or dental expense, unexpected home or auto repairs, a hurricane or major storm, or something unthinkable, such as a global pandemic. The last thing you want to do is to rely on credit cards with their hefty interest fees or to be forced to take out a loan. That’s where your emergency fund can come in handy. Historically, the formula for an emergency account is to have enough readily available cash to cover three to six months of living expenses.“

Vohwinkle’s essay gives readers some suggestions on how to save more money. Most importantly, he suggests setting up an emergency fund, as all other saving techniques stem from there. He also suggests creating an automatic savings plan and cutting down on “spending leaks,” like buying coffee. You might also be interested in these essays about celebration .

In this essay, write about why money is necessary and the ways to use it for the greater good, and include ways in which it can be used (investing, donating, etc.). Writing Task 2: Government is wasting money on the arts

Write about the following topic:

Some people think that the government is wasting money on the arts and this money could be better spent elsewhere.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Sample Answer 1: (Disagree)

Arts reflect the heritage of a country and depict the creativity of an individual. While many believe that financing in arts is a wastage of money, I am of the opposite view as I believe that financing in arts is a good idea for the government. Many people think that diverting funds towards arts hamper the well-being of citizens and the development of the nation. For example, available monetary resources, according to them, could be put to use in building more hospitals, roads, schools and developing other infrastructures. This means increasing care of the sick and improved transportation to previously inaccessible areas. For children, it caters for better education facilities. These people believe that art is a luxury and many governments cannot afford this extravagance. However, while investments in such areas are vital, spending on arts is equally important. Allocating money to the development and sustenance of arts helps boost the economy, and arts are important to alleviate crime from society and positively entertain and engage people. Art galleries can attract tourists from all over the world, generating revenue in return while artists can reveal discrimination of society through their works. It is also the case that viewing and practising arts, such as painting, music, acting, dancing and so on, are good sources of venting out stress while educating people at the same time. Such activities also portray a positive picture of a nation to the world. If governments fail to support arts fiscally, many art galleries and theatres would not be able to survive. Arts is as important as science for the true progress of a nation. In pithy, it is clear to me that spending on arts is beneficial both for an individual and society. Some people contend that there are many pressing concerns that a country must resolve before putting emphasis on the arts. However, I personally think that arts are an essential part of a culture, and it is quite fair to allocate funds to preserve and develop arts. Admittedly, there are some justifications by people who oppose spending on promoting arts. First of all, most art projects are expensive with no obvious outcomes that have direct relations to a nation’s income. For example, the monument of Kebangkitan Pahlawan in Malang city that adsorbed almost 1 billion rupiahs does not attract people that much. Besides, art is not a critical aspect of the sustainability of human’s life. Human’s life will not disappear just because they have less taste of aesthetics. However, I still support that the government should allocate a budget for the arts. Arts are part of a culture and over time become the identity of a nation, eventually, arts could be a major source of income for them. For instance, Bali is an island in Indonesia, where millions of visitors come each year to experience the combination of conventional values and modern lifestyles. The government in Indonesia invests more than a third of its budget to maintain its traditional arts. Furthermore, art makes a life worth living. Like food, art is a supplement for the human soul. It has a magnificent power to aid buildings, roads, parks, and everything, with its uniqueness. Just imagine how empty a room would be if there is no painting or decoration on the wall! Art is enhancing people’s life by leveraging their experiences and empowering people to possess beautiful imaginations. To conclude, supporting arts is important for a government as it would enhance the quality of life either by improving the tourism industry or by providing a better artistic facility. I partly agree with the latter view for the following reasons.

Admittedly , public services are not of immediate benefit for the entire society. The issues of health care, education, and infrastructure are always top concerns of any government that wants to recruit high-skilled labour, a strong workforce, and modern facilities. Some countries still struggling with abject misery after wars, a large amount of spending for music and painting proves infeasible.

However, the need for arts is rising these days for their long-term worth, especially during the time the country is beyond the peak of economic development and gears itself towards sustainable growth. With music, painting and other kinds of arts gaining their popularity, people’s spiritual life is continuously enriched . Such cities say, Florence, Paris, and Madrid are always unforgettable destinations of millions of visitors for their spectacular artistic creations and lure them into a different world where people are away from worries and let their creativity take off. These cities are also homes to various well-known art geniuses from Picasso, Leona DeVinci to Gaudi, who led art revolutions, partly by dint of their governments’ greater appreciation of this field and bigger expenditure on it. America and Britain are, too, other examples of nations where the music industry overwhelms other key ones for their greatest generation of profit. This is again derived from their governments’ frequent organization of musical shows and festivals to attract audiences worldwide.

Sure, investing in public services is going to improve the infrastructure; however, investments in the arts and traditions will simply helps us improve the economy and GDP.

In a word, governments should pay more attention to key sectors when their nations are in the embryonic stage of growth, but once they escape the life of poverty, arts should have a bigger say for their mental, educational and economic merits.

Governments must make a true innovation in keeping the society stable, meaning that the citizens should get adequate services from the governments. As per the said statement, governments should use the money for public development and not for other things, such as theatre and music. On a personal note, I complete disagree with this statement. In the forthcoming paragraphs, I shall support my reasons.

These days, to deal with development as a country, governments must compete with other nations. Arts can contribute to the quality of life positively. I believe that every nation has its own abilities and skills that make it stand out from the rest of the world. For instance, we are witnessing some of the competitions held at a global level, where people take part from every corner of the globe, such as Miss Universe, Asian Idol, World Choir Competition, and more. Every nation sends the best participants to take part in these competitions. Competitors get to compete with an array of people, coming from varying backgrounds, nations and cultures.

Additionally, I think that in case a government invests money into the art sector, the country, as a whole, will get to relish a gamut of benefits. For instance, India has a lot of skillful, talented artisans, crafting enchanting and mesmerising decor pieces. India can sell these crafts on a global scale. This way, our talent and skills can become everlasting , creating unending opportunities for the artisans as well as the country. However, to make the most out of this global sale, people would have to establish a good teamwork with the government only then adequate outcome can be achieved.

Sure, investing in public services can improve our infrastructure-game; however, paying major attention to only this factor will not reap any benefits. Hence, arts and theater should get the deserving attention as well.

Concluding this essay, I would like to say that governments should begin investing the funds to enhance art creation as it has bigger opportunities to make a country extremely successful.

There are various areas of government expenditure that suffer from a lack of substantial monetary investment. In situations like these, sensible resource management must be followed by the administration to allocate necessary funds to the sectors in need. It is widely believed that public facilities and infrastructure should be given more priority instead of fine arts when it comes to the utilization of government resources. I am a strong supporter of this belief as urban services serve a more crucial purpose than artistic agencies.

A considerable proportion of the population is greatly dependent on government-provided services. These amenities are a crucial aid to the smooth functioning of an ordinary citizen’s life. Furthermore, the dependence on such facilities is more prevalent in third-world countries like India, Brazil, and China, where the general income of a majority of the populace makes private services unaffordable. Thus, bearing in mind the necessities of the people on a macro-level, the public-sector merits extensive financial backing.

Additionally, we must also address the fact that creative activities like drama and music are only possible when the basic needs are adequately fulfilled. If there is a deficiency in the physical and mental well-being of an individual, no matter how impressive the artwork is, it will fail to ignite any stimulus within that person. Thus, it is vital to enhance the standard of living of the population before refining the quality of arts, as artistic demands are always secondary to rudimentary needs.

Nevertheless, the value of creative work cannot be disregarded entirely as all the artforms collectively form an industry that is vital to the economy. However, this trade has the support of numerous wealthy individuals and organizations, thereby do not require much assistance from the government.

Finally, the framework of government services requires fiscal reform. Thus, the authorities should recognize these obligations and concentrate their resources on the public sector.

Government expenditures are rising every single day. Some people claim that governments oblige to spend money on public goods rather than on arts. Even though a plethora of reasons can be given for unjustified this, I strongly agree that putting money on arts is just a waste of economic resources. In order to explain my opinion, I will provide some details in the next couple of paragraphs.

As it is well known, our resources are scarce. Thus, states must be extremely careful when they make decisions regarding financial issues. The focus of the governments should be on public services such as education and health because these services have a vital role in building a better society. Without these services, it would only be a daydream to live in a prosperous country. For instance, Germany as a leading European country does not invest in unnecessary fields such as arts.

Moreover, the priority of the governments is to remain in power as much as possible. For instance, governments mostly prefer to invest in infrastructures, municipalities, and construction works to continue to rule the people. Therefore, governments have to be strategic about where to put the money on. After the 2008 global financial crisis, politicians are becoming more decisive about the state budgets. For this reason, the questions of where and how to spend the money become more and more critical.

However, some people claim that government should not cut their budget on arts.

To sum up, if governments aim to stay in power, they have to use the money for public services. I strongly agree that other expenditures rather than public services should be cut by the Ministry of Economics.

This sample IELTS writing is on the arts .

A common topic in IELTS is whether you think it is a good idea for government money to be spent on the arts i.e. the visual arts (as you see in art galleries), literary arts (books) and the performing arts (music, theatre, dance and film), or whether it should be spent elsewhere , usually on other public services such as education, health, policing etc.

Take a look at the question:

Government investment in the arts, such as music and theatre, is a waste of money. Governments must invest this money in public services instead. To what extent do you agree with this statement?

Partly Agreeing

In this question, you are given the opinion that spending money on the arts is a waste of money, and it would be better spent on public services.

You then have to say if you agree or disagree. So you would need to decide what you think and give reasons to support your decision.

The sample IELTS writing model answer presented here is a balanced argument that partly agrees with this opinion.

This is made clear in the thesis statement :

"Although I agree that it is important to spend money on public services, I do not think spending additionally on the arts is a waste of money".

So the writer does not think it is a 'waste of money'; however, he/she does think the majority of money should go on public services.

The essay, therefore, needs to explain this, and so is organized as follows:

Body 1: Support for spending most money on public services
Body 2: Support for spending some on the arts

Of course if you completely agree or disagree, you can still present the other side of the argument to yours - that's optional . But if you are specifically saying you partly agree (on other words you can see both sides), you must present both.

Sample IELTS Writing - Model Answer

These days, the government spends a large part of its budget not only on public services, but also the arts. Although I agree that it is important to spend money on public services, I do not think spending additionally on the arts is a waste of money.

There are several reasons for spending a significant amount of the government budget on public services. First and foremost, public services are the things such as hospitals, roads and schools, and these things determine the quality of life that most of us will have. For example, if the government does not spend enough money on hospitals, the health of our society may decline. Similarly, if not enough money is spent on schools, our children may not be properly educated. Also, it will be the poor in our society that will be affected more if we do not spend enough on these things because they are the ones more dependent on such services.

However, this does not mean that the arts should be completely neglected. To begin, it is difficult for many arts institutions to generate much profit, so without some help from the government, many theatres and other such places may have to close. Moreover, the arts also have an important impact on our quality of life. Many people get great pleasure in going to see music and theatre performances so it is important that the government assists such institutions so that they can continue to provide entertainment to the public.

To sum up, there are clear benefits of ensuring a large amount of investment goes into public services as this influences the quality of life for nearly all of us. That said, I do not believe spending money on the arts is a waste of money as this too provides important benefits.

The essay gives a clear thesis at the beginning. This makes it clear that the writer partly agrees with the statement i.e. it is not a waste of money, but it is if too much is spent on it.

It is also a well-organized essay. The first paragraph sets out why the writer thinks a significant portion of money should go on public services. This is supported with reasons and examples.

The second paragraph in this sample IELTS writing then sets out clearly why some money should also go on the arts.

The conclusion then restates the authors opinion.

Space exploration: Colossal waste of money or one giant leap for mankind?

Following Elon Musk’s brilliant, yet also brilliantly expensive Falcon Heavy launch , there was again social media outrage decrying it as a huge waste of resources that could have been better used on Earth. It’s something I’ve heard a lot here and there from both liberals and conservatives: “Why should we invest so much in something that barely affects us?”

I’m not that surprised when this question comes from supporters of the current administration. Our supremely well-qualified EPA Chief, Scott Pruitt, just recently stated , “We know that humans have most flourished during time of warming trends. I think there’s [sic] assumptions made that because the climate is warming, that that necessarily is a bad thing.” Trump has also tried to hide and censor scientific facts that go against his platform, even cutting funding for many major science agencies .

This makes it even more strange that some liberals are against the scientific progress that space exploration brings.

The common “bleeding-heart liberal” argument is often that “since money isn’t being spent on poor people or starving children in Africa, it’s a waste.” For example, Nathan Robinson describes these launches as “indefensible wastes of money” in his article that sums up much of this childish reasoning. Robinson tries to casually equate Musk’s position about space exploration with the idea that “anyone who mentions the colossal waste the project involves, or the various social uses to which these resources could be put, [should] be dismissed as a killjoy.”

He’s exactly right. These people are indeed killjoys, and should be educated on the benefits that research can bring. In addition to being applied to Elon Musk and other rich entrepreneurs, this argument is also used for reasons that we should defund NASA.

What Robinson fails to address is the fact that the research and development that is needed to undertake such a massive project directly benefits us back on Earth. This is something I believe cannot be overstated enough: Even though we might just see something like a rocket launch as “cool” or an “oh wow” moment, in reality so much preparation and research goes into it that will inherently flow back and benefit us. Imagine a life without prosthetic limbs, heart pumps, solar power, advance firefighter gear and water purification. NASA has played a large part in the research and development of all of these items .

Innovations that are developed through NASA’s research are known as spin-offs, and often include medical and safety breakthroughs. Robinson states, “perhaps we could make it so that a child no longer dies of malaria every two minutes,” but space exploration could actually be the solution to this disease or similar ones through spin-offs. The technology that results from these large scale missions could solve many problems back on Earth.

From an economic standpoint, space exploration in general has so many benefits. Starting off, NASA doesn’t occupy a large portion of the federal budget at all, clocking in at a 0.4% of the 2018 budget . Even then, it’s not like the money that goes into NASA is being wasted. Each dollar that goes into NASA adds $7-14 to the economy. It’s a good investment to invest in space: we get great technology that we can use here on Earth as well as a boost to industry.

Viewpoints like Robinson’s disparaging Musk for using his own money on his own project instead of sending it off to another cause are reasons that wealth redistribution (which is needed in society) is often looked down upon within the U.S. The idea that rich people are both the sole problem and sole solution for society doesn’t really make sense, and especially not for scientists like Musk who are trying to develop ways to advance society. At the same time we as a society disparage wealthy people for working hard and having money, we expect them to give up that money and magically solve all of the world’s problems.

Even when Musk is involved with such a scientific breakthrough that will no doubt benefit the majority of members of society, much of it from his personal investment, he is still insulted. Even when the government is able to make an amazing return on its investment from NASA and other space programs that can be used to help civilians, people like Robinson will no doubt still bash on the agency. If anything, we need to invest in space technology: instead of ridiculing Elon Musk for shooting a car into space, we should relish the technology and R&D that went into it.

There is an ongoing debate regarding the allocation of government funds to the arts, with some individuals asserting that such expenditures constitute a waste of resources, suggesting that the funds could be more effectively utilised elsewhere. It’s a good question. You need to differentiate between art and the arts. The arts refer to the collection of subjects that are arts based rather than science based. In the arts, you’ll find: performing arts such as drama and theatre, you’ll also find visual arts such as film making and photography, you’ll also find literary arts such as literature and poetry, you’ll also find other things listed under this broad heading such as fashion, cooking and architecture. If you refer to an Arts Degree at university, such as a BA degree (Bachelor of Arts), you’ll find subjects which are non-science based, such as history, sociology and literature. However, if you are referring only to the subject art – this refers only to painting, drawing, sculpture and other things that you would learn in a class about art.

A balanced essay approach and a one-sided approach are different approaches to an Opinion Essay. The balanced approach is a partial agreement – you should only use that if you have been trained properly.

It is a known fact that the government is spending a large sum of money on different sectors. Arts is of no exception. Although i agree that, it is important to spend more amount on public services, it did not mean that spending on art is a waste of money.

There are several reasons to spend a significant amount of money on public sectors. First and foremost, the government should allocate the funds according to the priority, where the public services are the prime focus. That includes hospitals, schools and roads. Attributing the budget in these field will strengthen the health, education and transportation of the people which in turn will escalate the standard of a country. For instance, through more governmental hospitals the health of the citizens will increase. Similarly, proper education can be delivered to children through additional educational institutions. However, this does not mean that the arts should be neglected. To begin with, it is the responsibility of a government to preserve the culture and heritage of a country, which exist through the field of arts. Furthermore, many arts institutions are facing many hurdles to generate much profit. So without some help from the government many theaters and other such places cannot withstand. Moreover, arts also have an important impact in our quality of life. Many people get pleasure in going to see music and theater performance. So it is the duty of the government to assist such institutions that can continue providing entertainment to the public. Finally, arts brings economic benefits to a nation in the form of tourism , where arts play a key role. To sum up, spending on public service ensure a large amount of benefits to the society. But i do not believe utilizing money on arts is a waste of money as this too have great impact on the society.

To avoid errors, which take time to correct, you need to develop better English and plan each sentence. You only need to write about 13 sentences in the essay so plan each one. Liz

A balanced approach does not mean agreeing with both sides, it means have a specific opinion with a clear position. You can choose a one-sided approach or a balanced approach – both approaches can get band 9. It is all about how you present your ideas and support them. All the best Liz

It is believed that spending money on arts is not very useful and that it should be directed elsewhere. I completely disagree with this and feel that arts are worth every penny that is spent on them.

First of all, arts are considered a national interest. In some countries, arts have significant importance and government establishes and maintains organizations that preserve arts. For example, Canada, USA, UK, Australia have art museums all over the country that exhibit ancient arts. People who are interested can visit the museums free of cost. The cost of maintenance is undertaken by the government. Moreover, this increases the level of interest among the people. Thus, the government puts an inconsiderable amount of effort to preserve the arts in the form of museums, craft exhibitions, etcetera.

Secondly, arts are considered to be a great form of entertainment by several people in the country. For instance, movies, exhibitions, crafts are derived from arts. Movies are considered very lucrative and there is a film industry for every language. Like, Hollywood is for English, Tollywood is for Telugu, Bollywood for Hindi. Exhibitions and crafts display several creations like paintings, clay buildings, paper arts, and glass paintings.

Encouragement for arts from government improves the livelihood of thousands of people who base their career on arts. This proves beneficial both to people who work on arts and others who enjoy arts.

To conclude, since arts play an important role in the lives of people, it is very important for the government to make sure that arts are financed properly in a variety of forms like museums, exhibitions, documentary films, craft expos, and so on.

the writer disagree with the idea in introduction. in body paragraphs he/she tried to explain why should governments invests in arts. the writer even has a different conclusion from what he/she say he/she believes in the introduction.

It is considered by few flocks that ministry is deteriorating wealth on art and culture , otherwise it can be utilized somewhere else effectively. I maintained that this point is valid but traditions and customs are immense essential for pristine nations. Therefore, the allocated budget should primarily take into this account only.

To being with, it is responsibility of authorities to safeguard their values , customs , traditions , cultures and heritages. In order to continue this momentum swiftly , undoubtedly government spending’s are immensely vital without any holdings. Also , fine art, designing , painting , local theater , drama and singing. In this context all these activities are pivotal for youth to be acquainted and remember their civilizations. Additionally, all these fields open new opportunities to adolescents for their career and it maintains healthy competition among juveniles as well. For an instance , delinquent stunning actors/actress are in dream and film industries by the help of government institute such as art council where they learn and perform.

Moreover , expense on art should elucidate logical and sensible relation with proper planning and procedure and also it must harmonize with latent desirable outcomes. Furthermore , efficient and effective deployment of resources is crucial , otherwise obstacles are exist to convolute supreme decision maker to cut down portion of amount and deploy on other places. In particular, human development budget in under developed countries is squeezing ostensibly every year, because it seems to ruling class it is not being consumed in true essence.

All in all, I will carry my opinion which is very precise and defend to spend on arts due to alive culture and customs. Hence, it has significance to develop a stagnant , ludicrous and persuasive Socratic.

Art is an integral part of every nation and has been influencing our lives since time millennia in form of language, meals, dance, clothing and so much more. These aspects are very important for the advancement of a nation or country, which is why I partially disagree with the opinions that holds that Government fund investments should be channeled towards other things rather than Arts and, in this essay, I will highlight the reasons why I am partially against this line of thought.

To begin with, Arts has tremendous amount of influence on how we perceive each other, which goes to say that the modeling of our identity is greatly affected by how much value the government places on Arts. Take for instance, Egyptian government has greatly invested in the preservation of the ancient Egypt archeological sites that today, this investment has not only boosted their economy but also, further strengthen their strengthened their identity as the pioneers of early technology, which would not have been possible without financial investment from the authority to the preservation of those sites.

To discuss further, Arts is a universal language that everyone understands and can serve as major exports to other countries for diplomatic reasons. It is one avenue that bring all nations together through competitions. For example, in 2010, Iran, Afghanistan, United states of America were among 80 nations that game together in the spirit of the Olympics games despite their differences and disagreement. Furthermore, Arts is the only is only way we can preserve our identity as this is passed down through generates from the old ones to youngsters and the only way this can done effectively is through Arts.

In conclusion, While I agree that Government investment are better channeled towards other things, it is equally important that the same attention and funds are put into the preservation and upkeep of the national treasure and identity through Arts.

In this era governing bodies are always in search of money generating resources where putting their money in art exhibitions is one among all. Some Pupil considers it a useless step while I completely disagree with them because showcasing artistic talent not only doubles money but, also encourages the artistic community to grow as well as provide the public an entertainment venue.

To begin with, plowing money in artworks is quite a fruitful step towards enhancing travel and tourism industry of a country. Human nature has always appreciated and attracted to creative activities thus many people will come and enjoy their leisure time in such activities. For instance, nowadays, many developed countries are building eye-catching and unique infrastructures which appeal tourists to come and experience the wonders of human which results in increment in Grand domestic production value of a country.

Furthermore, manipulating peoples mind is not that easy as it was before so such creative activities would be proved much efficient as a communication media. In this regard, take an example of public messages which can be reached to common man in so many creative ways like art exhibitions, creative commercials and utilizing eminent celebrities to convey strong messages.

Apart from this, there are so many other advantages of funding art activities. In this way, artistic community will also be given a better platform to exhibit its talent over and above a better source of income which not only leads to wealthy artists but a prosperous government.

To sum up all, budgeting money for artwork would not be a money sinking act rather a quite interesting way of business. In this competitive world, I believe creative ideas and works are the best resources towards an efficient and well-groomed nation.

Art word is not a simple word as design,context and meaning offers a comprehensive form . It is deemed by some individuals that money should be wasted on it and could be influx elsewhere by the government. I partly agree with the statement since developing interests, historical evidences and making career. To begin with ,I concerned about the plausible merits of art many individuals have interests as a hobby and developing talent as well as many of them earn profit. Moreover,it provides historical archaeology and evidences to explorers as a sign of their lavish lifestyle as well as imagination. Futhermore, It provides golden opportunities to make career in industries by animated films. So government should spend money on art. On the other side, Government should spend money in to give employment and other basic amenities to impoverished people because people who are unemployed, they do crimes like robbing, snatching to fulfill their needs. To illustrate this, I want to take researches of previous years I found that cyber crime, theft of golden jewellery has been increased . In addition to this, education is the main problem , people don’t have money to provide education because there is no proper system in government schools and demand for high fee in private ones. So children remain illiterate. To demonstrate I would like to take report of UNICEF,it state that children do work as a labour and they do not get proper education facilities . In a nutshell, art is important in our life but but government should have to spend money meticulously and raise poor people’s status to develop country’s economy by giving chances.

To illustrate, Canada earns about 5% of its national income comes from international patients itself. Thus, the advancing medical sector proves productive to a nation in a broader aspect. On the other hand, illiteracy and unemployment are believed to have a more drastic impact on the economic condition of any country by many. It is cardinal to disburse financial resources for the development of infrastructure that aids the dissemination of knowledge as it not only helps the nation to produce productive labor force but also help masses to improve their living standard by the way of getting liberated from the shadows of joblessness. On top of that, when people start making money themselves it eradicates the need of government to take care of public health expenditure and the same can be put into other augmentations such as the development of adequate road and railway network to support timely transit of goods and mob as well as enhancement of internet connectivity to earn more national income. It is argued commonly that Government’s financial support for art is merely wastage financial resources of a country and that money should be invested somewhere else instead. I completely disagree with this argument and I think art is a gateway to preserve a culture and heritage. In this essay I would be discussing why art should be financed by government to great extent. Firstly, art is a great way to express someone’s opinion or imagination regarding a perspective or issue. Artist often reflect society’s culture, heritage and traditions in their artistic works and projects. Hence, It will pass the legacy of a society to their coming generations. In addition art also educate us about our ancestors thoughts and mental approach. For example, from Moeen Jo Daro (oldest civilization of Sindh Pakistan) remains we can easily figure out that this civilization was fully civilized with most developed infrastructure of the city and dancing girl sculpture with humongous bangles in her arm point out that girls dance was a social norm in our ancestors. Hence, our government should definitely invest in art and facilitate this field and its works to keep our legacy alive for thousands of centuries to come. Secondly, art is source of immense entertainment for the people who admire it. Nowadays, almost everyone is involved in artistic work or buys art. For instance, peoples tend to buy movie tickets, paintings, sculpture, novels and etcetera, these all are great examples of art and source of entertainment from children to elderly people. Hence these reasons are very convincing why this great field should be financed by Government sectors. To conclude, in my opinion Government should invest in art field to keep a trace to our culture for upcoming generations.

Some traders in Clevedon, Somerset, are refusing to pay the Business Improvement District charge, citing a lack of transparency and little in the way of benefits

British firms in Bid backlash

Business owners in Clevedon, a Somerset seaside town famous for its pier and independent shops, have split into two fiercely opposed camps in recent years.

There are those for and against, the ins and the outs. The big divide? Clevedon’s Business Improvement District (Bid), introduced in 2018 and renewed for another five years last summer.

“It has torn the town apart. People who were once friendly now no longer speak. It’s a nightmare,” says Daniel Adams, owner of Stationery House, one of several businesses refusing to pay the Bid levy.

As in more than 300 similar zones across the UK, businesses within the designated area of Clevedon must pay a yearly charge to the Bid, a private limited company, with the money going on improvements to boost business in the area.

But dozens of firms have joined the No To Clevedon Bid campaign, tensions have risen and arguments have broken out in meetings. Some businesses are preparing to go to court over paying the levy.

“A lot of people don’t want to put their head above the parapet,” says Adams. “But there needs to be an alternative narrative. If you’re going into something which is going to financially commit you for five years, you need all the information.”

Lynda Parkin, owner of Ziggy gift shop, says she initially supported the Bid but changed her mind when she struggled to find out where her money was going: “There isn’t enough information out there to make a decision. It has divided the traders. I’ve heard people say ‘Oh no, I won’t use that shop because they’re anti-Bid.’ It’s sad.”

Many businesses in the town are happy with what the Bid has achieved. “I’ve had my shop for over 20 years and for me, the Bid is brilliant because it means we’ve got a pot of money to do things with,” says Amy Bennett, who runs chocolate shop Indulgence.

“Everyone can chat about what the money is spent on, and it means that things have actually got done. It bring everyone together to work for the greater good.”

She points to benefits such as extra signs, funds for a new play area and a website to promote the town. She says a “nasty campaign” has sprung up in opposition to the Bid, making “bilious accusations”. “Unfortunately, those people aren’t really offering alternative solutions.”

A few doors down, Alistair Sims, the manager of Books on the Hill, agrees that the Bid has been a “bigger force for good than bad”.

“Without having that central voice, we can’t do as much as we want to. I think it’s really helpful,” he says. “If it’s voted in, then of course everyone is expected to pay it. We have a sense of duty. There’s really no need for division.”Others feel they have seen little return for their money. “I thought the Bid originally was a good idea,” says Gary Searle, who has run the Salthouse bar on the seafront for 18 years. “But I’ve been paying £1,600 a year for five years for nothing. The flower beds round here haven’t been touched. The seafront has had nothing. We won’t be paying until we feel a Bid is going to offer value.”

Clevedon Bid rebuts the claim that it has not invested in the seafront, referring to a parkrun it helped introduce there four years ago.

Searle was particularly critical of the way North Somerset council was allowed to vote in the ballot to decide on creating the Bid. Last year, 141 votes were cast, with 80 in favour. The council had six votes: one for its headquarters, three for car parks, one for a children’s community centre and one for a library.

The council offices are in one of Clevedon’s largest buildings, with a rateable value of more than £1m, making up about a third of the rateable value of all businesses which voted in favour of the Bid. The ballot is won not just on votes cast, but on the rateable values of the businesses voting.

“Without the council votes, there would be no Bid, because not enough businesses would vote for it,” says Adams. “Councils love Bids because then they don’t have to spend on things like hanging baskets, festivals and street cleaning.”

North Somerset council acknowledges that the outcome would have been different if council properties had been excluded, but says: “We were entitled to vote and chose to do so.”

Adams says businesses are doubly angry that the council gets a 50% discount on the levy, because the building is outside the town centre.

After the ballot last July, which saw the Bid renewed for five years, the No campaign appealed to levelling up secretary Michael Gove, arguing that it was unlawful because of the council offices’ inclusion and the discount. The appeal was unsuccessful.

George Grace, chair of Clevedon Bid, says businesses are free to vote against it, but asks what would replace the service it provides: “Councils can barely pay for children’s and other essential services, so while there are fine words about saving the high street and building community, there is almost no council resource to do any of it. In Clevedon, the average weekly cost for the independent businesses to be part of the Bid is the price of a cup of coffee so it’s hardly going to break the bank.”

He says businesses are best placed to bring change in towns and that in Clevedon, people say they get a sense that someone is caring for the place. “Put most simply, businesses know [Bids] work and there are no real alternatives.”

A North Somerset council spokesperson said: “We think the Bid activities significantly benefit Clevedon’s retail and hospitality sectors, and have a positive effect on residents who use the town’s public areas.

North Somerset council holds one seat [on the board], but does not in any way have a controlling voice, and our general approach is to support the initiatives proposed locally. We would encourage businesses unhappy with how the Bid is run to get more involved at local level, so they can influence its activity.”

I served medical research. now it’s serving me. and i don’t want to waste time..

Over my 40 years as a physician-scientist, I’ve had the privilege of advising many patients facing serious medical diagnoses. I’ve seen them go through the excruciating experience of waiting for the results of a critical blood test, biopsy or scan that could dramatically affect their future hopes and dreams.

But this time, I was the one lying in the PET scanner as it searched for possible evidence of spread of my aggressive prostate cancer . I spent those 30 minutes in quiet prayer. If that cancer had already spread to my lymph nodes, bones, lungs or brain, it could still be treated — but it would no longer be curable.

Why am I going public about this cancer that many men are uncomfortable talking about? Because I want to lift the veil and share lifesaving information, and I want all men to benefit from the medical research to which I’ve devoted my career and that is now guiding my care.

Five years before that fateful PET scan, my doctor had noted a slow rise in my PSA, the blood test for prostate-specific antigen. To contribute to knowledge and receive expert care, I enrolled in a clinical trial at the National Institutes of Health, the agency I led from 2009 through late 2021.

At first, there wasn’t much to worry about — targeted biopsies identified a slow-growing grade of prostate cancer that doesn’t require treatment and can be tracked via regular checkups, referred to as “active surveillance.” This initial diagnosis was not particularly surprising. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in the United States, and about 40 percent of men over age 65 — I’m 73 — have low-grade prostate cancer . Many of them never know it, and very few of them develop advanced disease.

Why am I going public about this cancer that many men are uncomfortable talking about? Because I want to lift the veil and share lifesaving information.

But in my case, things took a turn about a month ago when my PSA rose sharply to 22 — normal at my age is less than 5. An MRI scan showed that the tumor had significantly enlarged and might have even breached the capsule that surrounds the prostate, posing a significant risk that the cancer cells might have spread to other parts of the body.

New biopsies taken from the mass showed transformation into a much more aggressive cancer. When I heard the diagnosis was now a 9 on a cancer-grading scale that goes only to 10, I knew that everything had changed.

Thus, that PET scan, which was ordered to determine if the cancer had spread beyond the prostate, carried high significance. Would a cure still be possible, or would it be time to get my affairs in order? A few hours later, when my doctors showed me the scan results, I felt a rush of profound relief and gratitude. There was no detectable evidence of cancer outside of the primary tumor.

Later this month, I will undergo a radical prostatectomy — a procedure that will remove my entire prostate gland. This will be part of the same NIH research protocol — I want as much information as possible to be learned from my case, to help others in the future.

While there are no guarantees, my doctors believe I have a high likelihood of being cured by the surgery.

My situation is far better than my father’s when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer four decades ago. He was about the same age that I am now, but it wasn’t possible back then to assess how advanced the cancer might be. He was treated with a hormonal therapy that might not have been necessary and had a significant negative impact on his quality of life.

Because of research supported by NIH, along with highly effective collaborations with the private sector, prostate cancer can now be treated with individualized precision and improved outcomes.

As in my case, high-resolution MRI scans can now be used to delineate the precise location of a tumor. When combined with real-time ultrasound, this allows pinpoint targeting of the prostate biopsies. My surgeon will be assisted by a sophisticated robot named for Leonardo da Vinci that employs a less invasive surgical approach than previous techniques, requiring just a few small incisions.

Advances in clinical treatments have been informed by large-scale, rigorously designed trials that have assessed the risks and benefits and were possible because of the willingness of cancer patients to enroll in such trials.

I feel compelled to tell this story openly. I hope it helps someone. I don’t want to waste time.

If my cancer recurs, the DNA analysis that has been carried out on my tumor will guide the precise choice of therapies. As a researcher who had the privilege of leading the Human Genome Project , it is truly gratifying to see how these advances in genomics have transformed the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

I want all men to have the same opportunity that I did. Prostate cancer is still the No. 2 cancer killer among men. I want the goals of the Cancer Moonshot to be met — to end cancer as we know it. Early detection really matters, and when combined with active surveillance can identify the risky cancers like mine, and leave the rest alone. The five-year relative survival rate for prostate cancer is 97 percent, according to the American Cancer Society , but it’s only 34 percent if the cancer has spread to distant areas of the body.

But lack of information and confusion about the best approach to prostate cancer screening have impeded progress. Currently, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that all men age 55 to 69 discuss PSA screening with their primary-care physician, but it recommends against starting PSA screening after age 70.

Other groups, like the American Urological Association , suggest that screening should start earlier, especially for men with a family history — like me — and for African American men, who have a higher risk of prostate cancer. But these recommendations are not consistently being followed.

Our health-care system is afflicted with health inequities. For example, the image-guided biopsies are not available everywhere and to everyone. Finally, many men are fearful of the surgical approach to prostate cancer because of the risk of incontinence and impotence, but advances in surgical techniques have made those outcomes considerably less troublesome than in the past. Similarly, the alternative therapeutic approaches of radiation and hormonal therapy have seen significant advances.

A little over a year ago, while I was praying for a dying friend, I had the experience of receiving a clear and unmistakable message. This has almost never happened to me. It was just this: “Don’t waste your time, you may not have much left.” Gulp.

Having now received a diagnosis of aggressive prostate cancer and feeling grateful for all the ways I have benefited from research advances, I feel compelled to tell this story openly. I hope it helps someone. I don’t want to waste time.

Everyone Wants to Seize Russia’s Money. It’s a Terrible Idea.

The Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, has brought a glimmer of hope to supporters of the Ukrainian war effort. He suggested to Fox News on March 31 that he would try to rally his divided party behind the REPO Act . That piece of legislation would allow President Biden, working with European allies, to seize Russian currency reserves frozen in the West and use them to aid Ukraine.

Grabbing these reserves would be politically convenient. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the United States and its allies have thrown more than a quarter-trillion dollars into the war, to little ultimate effect. Ukraine has lately suffered a string of battlefield defeats. Prolonging the war is a project that Americans of all political leanings have been steadily less willing to fund through taxes.

Mr. Johnson backs Ukraine’s war effort and sees supporting it as a responsibility of American leadership. But his caucus — more in tune with the Republican voter base — has stymied him. The REPO Act might offer both Mr. Johnson and Mr. Biden a way to duck controversy.

Thus far, the idea of supplying Ukraine through a spending bill has brought scorn from congressional Republicans who wonder whether Americans’ taxes wouldn’t be better spent on defending the U.S.-Mexico border. The REPO Act, by contrast, could make “Russia foot the bill for its own aggression,” as a group of Brookings Institution scholars puts it . Mr. Johnson calls it “pure poetry.” It is a tempting idea.

But it is a bad one. In any free country there is a constitutional wariness of allowing the government to do anything without levying taxes, for good reason. Taxes and accountability go together. Generally, if citizens aren’t paying for a government program through taxes, they are paying for it in some less straightforward way — by taking on debt, for instance, or permitting an outsize governmental role for some corporation or other private interest.

The REPO Act carries additional risks. The very act of seizing Russian assets would pose dangers to the U.S. economy, because other countries, not just Russia, would view it as an act of brigandage. This could weaken the dollar’s status as the main global reserve currency.

The dollar is probably the most valuable strategic asset the United States has. We exercise a degree of control over the world economy because the world, for trading purposes, allows its transactions to pass through our currency. This leaves us with cheaper transaction costs and lighter financial burdens. It gives us leeway to run up debt ($34 trillion of it so far) that other countries lack.

If Russia, China and other diplomatic rivals were to decide that their dollar assets were vulnerable and that they could no longer trust the dollar as a means of exchange, we would feel the pain of that $34 trillion in debt in a way that we don’t now. Retaining the advantages of a reserve currency depends on our behaving as a trustworthy and neutral custodian of others’ assets. If we start stealing people’s money, that could change.

At the start of the war, Russia had about $600 billion in reserves. That means securities denominated in euros, dollars, British pounds, yen and various other stable, convertible currencies, along with gold. In normal times, Russia, like other countries, holds those currencies to facilitate trade and stabilize its own currency. Little of that money — a few billion dollars — is in the United States. Most talk of seizing Russian assets concerns the roughly $300 billion held in Europe, the bulk of it at a depository in Belgium called Euroclear.

Although Europeans regulate this money, they have mostly followed America’s lead on diplomatic and strategic matters since the start of the war. Individual European countries, above all Germany, have urged caution before laying hands on Russia’s reserves, fearing that such a move would jeopardize the euro’s status as a (lesser) reserve currency. The REPO Act could goad them to act more aggressively.

The European Union has proposed a compromise between leaving the money alone and seizing it all. It has asked Euroclear to hold in separate accounts the profits generated by its Russian assets. These profits could then be taxed at a high rate and the proceeds delivered to Ukraine — an accounting maneuver expected to yield about $3 billion a year.

Other Europeans have proposed a more reckless course. They argue that Russia’s hundreds of billions of dollars should be used as collateral for a large Western war loan to Ukraine, to be repaid out of anticipated reparations, for which the European Union could replace Ukraine as the claimant.

These debates come down to the difference between freezing assets and seizing them. For the past few months, Mr. Biden and his administration have called for seizing the Russian reserves outright and using them to fund the war against Russia — a move that would be, if not entirely unprecedented, at least radical. Freezing reserves happens. Actually seizing them has been done only in drastic circumstances and then only in a limited way.

The United States froze Iranian assets in the opening days of the hostage crisis of 1979, but most of these were unfrozen two years later. Frozen assets were used to pay war reparations to Kuwaiti victims of Iraq’s 1990 invasion, but that was according to a plan approved by the U.N. Security Council the following year. The United States seized about $1.7 billion from Iraq in 2003, but that was in the midst of war. And last September Mr. Biden returned a few billion dollars of frozen assets to Iran as part of a deal that saw the repatriation of Americans imprisoned there. Freezing has generally not meant seizing.

Things started changing, though, with the disorderly withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan in the summer of 2021. In the aftermath, the Biden administration froze the country’s $7 billion in reserves, earmarking half of it for a compensation fund for the families of victims of the Sept. 11 attacks. Even though it was arguably a wartime measure, this kind of seizure was irregular and surprising. Few viewed it as a precedent: Russia’s central bank was not hiding its reserves through shell companies or other trickery on the eve of its Ukraine invasion. No one seems to have considered the possibility that a foreign banking authority might simply take the money.

Mr. Biden and Mr. Johnson, in their different ways, are claiming the mantle of moral leadership for their respective parties. “American leadership is what holds the world together,” Mr. Biden said last fall, and walking away from Ukraine, he contends, would put that leadership at risk. Mr. Johnson has accused Mr. Biden of “projecting weakness” in his foreign policy and is presenting an alternative.

The larger worry is not moral but practical. If the REPO Act is enacted, then currency seizures, now seen as a tool of last resort, might turn into standard operating procedure, to America’s detriment. Any foreign government liable to having an American voting bloc riled up against it — China, for starters — would think twice before parking its assets in the United States or with one of its NATO allies.

That is not yet a probability, but it is a possibility that no politician of either party should lose sight of. For decades now, the United States has been deferring hard decisions at home and abroad and papering over partisan divisions with the tens of trillions of dollars that our advantageous international position has allowed us to borrow. Our options, though, are narrowing. If Mr. Johnson thinks the United States is “projecting weakness” now, wait till he sees it without its reserve currency.

E-waste, or waste electrical and electronic equipment, is the fastest-growing waste stream globally, with an estimated 62 billion kilogrammes produced in 2022 alone.
But the phones, tablets, laptops and other gadgets we discard contain valuable metals and minerals, collectively worth $62.5 billion each year.
With currently only about one-fifth of the world's e-waste recycled, a World Economic Forum report underscores the need for systemic change to encourage industries to embrace the circular economy.

Technological advancements continue to transform our world, but the result is a cascade of unwanted devices that are becoming the fastest-growing waste stream on the planet.

Global e-waste almost doubled in the past 12 years reaching 62 billion kilogrammes (kg) in 2022, and is projected to increase to 82 billion kg by 2030.

The total of 62 billion kg of e-waste generated in 2022 is enough to fill 1.55 million 25-metre-long trucks forming a bumper-to-bumper traffic jam stretching 40,000 kilometres around Earth's equator, according to The Global E-waste Monitor 2024 report produced by the United Nations.

However, just over 22% of all that waste was formally collected and recycled, the report notes.

Our discarded phones, tablets, laptops and other gadgets are worth $62.5 billion each year and, per tonne, contain 100 times more gold than the same weight of gold ore. And, yet, only about one-fifth of the world’s e-waste is recycled.

But here are seven initiatives aimed at boosting e-waste recycling rates to reuse the valuable metals and minerals contained in our old devices.

1. Colourful collections

Cambridge City Council in the UK now provides bright pink bins to collect residents’ discarded small electrical goods and reduce the quantity of e-waste that ends up in regular recycling collections.

These appliances cannot be included in curbside recycling bins, but they contain much-needed materials like copper and lithium.

Around 49 tonnes of small electrical appliances have been deposited into the eye-catching collection bins since they were installed in 2022, ready for reuse or recycling.

2. Egypt’s e-waste app

Policymakers in Egypt have launched the E-Tadweer mobile application, which uses technology to tackle the country’s growing e-waste challenge .

The app enables end-users to take their unwanted appliances to dedicated delivery points and exchange them for vouchers, which can be used to purchase new electronic goods from stores that have joined the scheme.

Safe recycling of electronic devices helps prevent harmful chemicals contained within, such as mercury or lead, from finding their way into soil and waterways.

The World Economic Forum Centre for Nature and Climate is actively promoting the transition to a circular economy through various initiatives. The objective is to create a more sustainable and resilient economic system by reducing waste and maximizing resource efficiency.

The Circular Transformation of Industries initiative engages leaders from industry, government, academia, and civil society to drive circularity across sectors and economies. 3. Precious metals from the Royal Mint

The Royal Mint, noted for producing coinage for the UK and more than 30 other nations, is developing a new process to reclaim gold and other precious metal deposits from discarded electronic devices.

Together with Canadian start-up Excir, researchers have invented a patented process that they claim can extract 99% of the gold held on a printed circuit board found inside laptops, cell phones and other devices.

Royal Mint engineers are working to scale this quick, sustainable chemical process that operates at room temperature. The recovered gold will be melted into ingots ready for use in Royal Mint products.

4. Singapore’s policy and community fixes

The island state of Singapore generates an estimated 60,000 tonnes of e-waste each year, and with land in limited supply, the problem of what to do with it is high on the agenda.

At the state level, Singapore’s policymakers have put in place progressive legislation making it the producer's responsibility to collect end-of-life electrical appliances and electronic devices , and send them for reuse or recycling.

At community level, the Repair Kopitiam – which means “coffee shop” in Malay – initiative relies on a network of local volunteers who work out of community centres to help local people repair old or broken appliances and electronics so they can be reused rather than discarded.

Repair cafes or centres like those in Singapore, where in-the-know volunteer repairers help people extend the useful life of their appliances and devices , have been around for many years in parts of Europe and elsewhere.

The growing influence of the circular economy is highlighted in a 2018 European Union survey, which found that almost two-thirds of Europeans would rather repair products than buy new ones .

And countries like France are supporting this drive to avoid e-waste, with the country’s National Assembly voting to create a repairability index of electrical and electronic equipment , to boost the repair rate by 60% within five years of the legislation.

6. Northern Africa's e-waste legislation

Some countries in Northern Africa are turning to legislation to resolve their e-waste challenges, according to the UN's latest e-waste report.

Egypt has established a new regulatory agency for its waste management industry , and has further enforced a ban on imports of hazardous substances and wastes, including e-waste resulting from electrical and electronic equipment (EEE).

Tunisia has also moved to regulate e-waste, drafting a decree to establish a polluter-pays system for importing EEE.

E-waste collection and recycling centres are in operation at varying levels in both countries.

7. Taiwan's better-by-design approach

The Taiwanese government has established a legal framework to regulate and manage effective disposal and recycling of e-waste.

Under the legislation, manufacturers and importers of electronic goods are required to design products with recycling in mind, as well as establish collection systems and finance recycling and disposal of e-waste, making them responsible for the entire lifecycle of the products they produce.

The World Economic Forum’s Circular Transformation of Industries: Unlocking New Value in a Resource-Constrained World report, points to the systemic change required to bring about a circular transformation of industries to help unlock productivity, innovation and sustainability gains.

Higher global consumption of e-goods, shorter product life cycles and fewer repair options mean the amount of unwanted phones, laptops and other items is soaring. However, changing attitudes to the circular economy mean initiatives aimed at reusing and recycling e-waste could help us use precious metals and minerals more sustainably.
