1. (a) Solve: 7x + 4 < (4x + 3). (b) Salem, Sunday, and Shaka divided N 1,100 between them. For every N2.00 Salem receives, Sunday receives 50 kobo, and for every N4.00 Sunday receives, Shaka receives N2.00. Find Shaka’s share.
a) The angle of depression of a boat from the cliff’s midpoint is 35 degrees. Determine the height of the precipice if the boat is 120 metres from the base of the cliff.
(b) P and Q are x kilometres apart. Two motorists set out simultaneously from P to Q at 60 km/h and 80 km/h, respectively. The quicker driver arrived at Q thirty minutes before the other. Determine the worth of x.
3. (a) A child of height 1.2 m stands 6 m from the base of a vertical lamppost measuring 4.2 m in length. If the lantern is located at the top of the pole, depict this in a diagram.
(b) Determine the:
(i) the length of the boy’s shadow cast by the lamp; (ii) the angle of elevation of the lamp relative to the boy, rounded to the nearest degree.
4. (a) The current age ratio between a father and his son is 10:3. How many years from now, if the son is 15 years old, will the ratio of their ages be 2:1?
(b) The arithmetic mean of x, y, and z is 6, whereas it is 9 for x, y, z, t, u, v, and w. Determine the geometric mean of t, u, v, and w.
5. On the same horizontal ground, point H is 20 metres distant from the base of a tower. From point H, the elevation angles of point (P) on the tower and the tower’s apex (T) are 30o and 50o, respectively. Calculate and correct three figures of significance:
(a) /PT/; (b) The distance between H and the summit of the tower; (c) The location of H if H’s angle of depression from the top of the tower is to be 40 degrees.

Question 1.
In the diagram, L.PTQ = L.PSR = 900, /PQ/ = 10 ern, /PS/ = 14.4 cm and /TQ/ = 6 cm.
Calculate the area of quadrilateral QRST.
(b) Two opposite sides of a square are each decreased by 10% while the other two are each increased by 15% to form a rectangle. Find the ratio of the area of the rectangle to that of the square.
Math GCE Observation.
We advise that students should always remember to apply the concept of similar triangles correctly.
Furthermore, students should try and recognize the quadrilateral as a trapezium, this will help in finding its area.
Part (b) Candidates were expected to show that:
/PT/ = …./102 – 62 = 8 cm. m: =!J2L i.e ~ = 14.4.Hence, /SR/ = 10.8 cm.
/TO/ /SR/ 6 /SR/
Area of quadrilateral QRST = Yz (6 + 10.8) x 6.4 = 53.76 cm2. Don't subtract the area of triangle PQT from triangle PRS.
This was also in order. In part (b) if the side of the square was y, then new breadth = 90 x y = 0.9 y .
New length = 115 x Y = 1.15y. New area = 1.15y x 0.9y = 1.035/.
Hence, ratio = 1.035y² : y² = 1.035 : 1 or 207:200 .
In a class of 40 students, 18 passed Mathematics, 19 passed Accounts, 16 passed Economics, 5 passed Mathematics and Accounts only, 6 passed Mathematics only, 9 passed Accounts only, 2 Accounts and Economics only. If each student offered at least one of the subjects, (a) How many students failed in all the subjects? (b) Find the percentage number who failed in at least one of Economics and Mathematics. (c) Calculate the probability that a student selected at random failed in Accounts.

(a) Copy and complete the table of values for the relation V = -X² + X + 2 for -3 ≤ x ≥ 3.
(b) Using scales of 2 cm to 1 unit on the x-axis and 2 cm to 2 units on the v-axis, draw a graph of the relation
y = -X² + X + 2.
(c) From the graph, find the:
(i)Minimum value of y;
(ii)Roots of the equation X² – x -2 = 0;
(iii)Gradient of the curve at x = -0.5.
3. (a) P varies directly as Q and inversely as the square of R. If P = 1 when Q = 8 and R = 2, find the value of Q when P = 3 and R = 5. (b) An aeroplane flies from town A(20oN, 60oE) to town B(20oN, 20oE). (i) If the journey takes 6 hours, calculate, correct to 3 significant figures, the average speed of the aeroplane. (ii) If it then flies due north from town B to town C, 420 km away, calculate, correct to the nearest degree, the latitude of town C. [Take radius of the earth = 6400 km and π = 3.142]

The West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) is a type of standardized test taken in West Africa, mostly by students who wish to proceed to the higher institution. It is administered by the West African Examination Council (WAEC).
It is only offered to candidates residing in Anglophone West African countries namely: Ghana, Gambia, Nigeria, Liberia and Sierra Leone and is written 2 times a year ( May/June and Nov/Dec).
The WASSCE tests candidates according to the topics on the WAEC syllabus.
The contents in each WASSCE General Mathematics question paper (for a specific year) is usually similar from one country to another. Questions on the WASSCE General Mathematics theory section may be specified to be answered by candidates from a particular country and this happens mostly in the theory section.

The waec mathematics answers 2024 questions is now available. The West African Examination Council (WAEC) General Mathematics essay and objective paper will now be written on Saturday, 25th November 2023.
The WAEC Mathematics 2 (Essay) paper will start at 9:30 am and will last for 2hrs 30mins while the Waec Mathematics 1 (Objective) exam will commence at 2:00 pm and will last for 1hr 30mins. 2024 WAEC Mathematics Question and Answer.
PAPER 2 [Essay] Answer any … questions. Write your answers in the answer booklet provided.
1. (a) Solve: 7x + 4 < (4x + 3). (b) Salem, Sunday and Shaka shared a sum of N 1,100.00. For every N2.00 that Salem gets, Sunday gets fifty kobo and for every N 4.00 Sunday gets, Shaka gets N 2.00. Find Shaka’s share.
2. ( a) The angle of depression of a boat from the mid-point of a vertical cliff is 35°. If the boat is 120 m from the foot of the cliff, calculate the height of the cliff.
(b) Towns P and Q are x km apart. Two motorists set out at the same time from P to Q at steady speeds of 60 km/h and 80 km/h. The faster motorist got to Q 30 minutes earlier than the other. Find the value of x.
3. (a) A boy 1.2 m tall, stands 6 m away from the foot of a vertical lamp pole 4.2 m long. If the lamp is at the tip of the pole, r epresent this information in a diagram.
(b) Calculate the:
(i) length of the shadow of the boy cast by the lamp.
4. (a) The present ages of a father and his son are in the ratio 10 : 3. If the son is 15 years old now, in how many years will the ratio of their ages be 2 : 1?
(b) The arithmetic mean of x, y and z is 6 while that of x, y, z, t, u, v and w is 9. Calculate the arithmetic mean of t, u, v and w.
6. A point H is 20m away from the foot of a tower on the same horizontal ground. From point H, the angle of elevation of point (P) on the tower and the top (T) of the tower are 30o and 50o respectively. Calculate, and correct 3 significant figures:
(a) /PT/; (b) The distance between H and the top of the tower; (c) The position of H if the angle of depression of H from the top of the tower is to be 40°.
9. In the diagram, /AB/ = 8 km, /BC/ = 13 km, the bearing of A from B is 310° and the bearing of B from C is 230°. Calculate, correct to 3 significant figures,
(a) the distance AC;
(b) the bearing of C from A;
(c) how far east of B, C is
11. (a) In a class of 40 students, 18 passed Mathematics, 19 passed Accounts, 16 passed Economics, 5 Mathematics and Accounts only, 6 Mathematics only, 9 Accounts only, 2 Accounts and Economics only. If each student offered at least one of the subjects.
i. How many students failed in all the subjects?
ii. Find the percentage number who failed in at least one of Economics and Mathematics;
(b) Calculate the probability that a student selected at random failed in Accounts.

The standard of the paper is quite good and compare to those of the previous years. The rubrics of the paper were clear, non-ambiguous and straight forward. The questions covered all the sections of the syllabus as required and rubrics were clear. Furthermore, the preparation of the marking scheme was commended. Detailed workings were shown and marks were distributed according to the weights of each question. Candidates’ performance was described as good and compared favorably with those of previous years.

The Further Mathematics examination paper is going to comprise of two papers
Paper 1: Essay Paper 2: Objectives And, PAPER 1: will consist of forty multiple-choice objective questions, covering the entire Futher Mathematics syllabus. Candidates will be required to answer all questions in 1 hour for 40 marks. The questions will be set from the sections of the syllabus as sated here under:
