Introduction:

“Varisu” is a family drama set against the backdrop of a cutthroat corporate world, directed by Vamshi. The film revolves around Rajendran, a business tycoon, and his three sons, Jai, Ajay, and Vijay. It explores the dynamics of their relationships, power struggles, and the quest for a worthy successor. Vijay, played brilliantly by Vijay , takes center stage, elevating the ordinary moments into entertaining episodes.

Engaging Family Drama:

The film delves into the complex family dynamics of the business tycoon Rajendran and his sons. The first and second sons, Jai and Ajay, blindly follow their father’s whims to inherit his wealth and power. However, the third son, Vijay, portrayed by Vijay, chooses to distance himself from the family business, leading to conflicts and misunderstandings.

A Tale of Misunderstood Sons and Fathers:

“Varisu” beautifully explores the theme of misunderstood relationships between fathers and sons. Rajendran pits his sons against each other, causing a rift in the family. The film sheds light on the importance of understanding and communication in strengthening familial bonds.

Power Struggles and Jealous Rivals:

The film doesn’t shy away from showcasing the cutthroat nature of the corporate world. Vijay’s journey to prove himself as a worthy successor is filled with challenges, including rivalries and jealous adversaries. Prakash Raj ‘s character adds intensity to the plot, though the antagonist’s characterization could have been stronger.

A Mixed Start:

The movie starts with a shaky beginning, with certain scenes feeling somewhat distant and cold. The mother sentiment doesn’t evoke a strong emotional response, and interactions between Vijay and his on-screen mother lack depth. However, the parallels between the film’s star and his real-life experiences add an intriguing layer to these moments.

A Tale of Redemption and Unity:

The film picks up momentum in the second half, with the director successfully infusing mass moments filled with comedy and heroism. The sentimental moments are skillfully balanced with humor, preventing the film from becoming overly melodramatic. “Varisu” beautifully highlights the importance of family and the complexities of relationships.

Flaws and Weaknesses:

Despite its strengths, “Varisu” does have some weaknesses. The romantic track involving Rashmika feels superficial, and the portrayal of the villains lacks depth. The film’s pacing is uneven, with unnecessary songs and an excess of fight scenes that extend its runtime.

Conclusion:

“Varisu” is an engaging family drama with memorable moments and an outstanding performance by Vijay. Despite its flaws, the film successfully explores the complexities of family relationships, power struggles, and redemption. Vamshi’s direction, coupled with Vijay’s charismatic presence, ensures an entertaining watch for fans of the genre.

Varisu Movie Review: Thalapathy Vijay’s film is high on comedy and family sentiment

This movie has been long awaited by Vijay fans given that it is Pongal treat and a film that is a family entertainer. The fact that Varisu was releasing alongside Ajith Kumar’s Thunivu created a lot more excitement and anticipation.

Vijay Rajendran (Vijay) is the youngest of three brothers in the family helmed by Rajendran (Sarathkumar), who is in the business of mining, among others. His other two sons are Srikanth and Shaam, who play Jai and Ajay. The joint family lives together but when Vijay has a disagreement with his father over joining the family business, his father asks him to leave their home. One day, Rajendran finds himself diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and his world is shattered. Vijay comes back home after seven years to celebrate his father’s 65th birthday and this is when things change. Why does Vijay decide to stay back home and why does his father make him the chairman of his group of companies?

The first half of the film has lighter moments, fun and frolic and it’s only in the second half that the movie really takes off. The film works for the most part and is what we would expect from a family entertainer. As a treat for Vijay fans, we find references to Thalapathy's earlier films by way of gestures or dialogues sprinkled generously through the film. There are scenes which could have been edited out (those with unnecessary characters) to make the movie crisper and increase the pace of the film. Some of the dialogues are not particularly outstanding - some are just plain cheesy and others cringe. Having said that, the comedy works really well, especially the scenes and dialogues between Vijay and Yogi Babu.

The story of Varisu is reminiscent of what we see in Telugu cinema (read: Srimanthudu and Maharshi) – rich families and the son returning home to take over the father’s empire and fight off the bad men, and reunite the broken divided family into a happy one once again. There’s a sense of déj vu as we watch the film. The way the film has been shot is also similar to what we find in Telugu cinema – large, lavish homes; luxurious offices; and the entire cast dressed to the nines.

Of course, a large joint family means a multi-starrer and many cast members and, in the case of Varisu, there are many other characters as well, who make fleeting appearances throughout the film. Shaam, Srikanth, Sarath Kumar, Prakash Raj, Rashmika Mandanna, Yogi Babu, Jayasudha, Sangeetha Krish, Samyuktha Shanmughanathan, Nandini Rai, Ganesh Venkatraman, Sriman, VTV Ganesh, Prabhu, Suman, Khushbu – the list seems to be endless. Whether all these characters were really warranted for the film is the big question, since many had no connection to the core of the story.

The songs by music director S Thaman are already hits and they have been beautifully picturised to add to the technical brilliance of the film. Jani master’s Ranjiathame is a standout thanks to its top-notch choreography and Thaman’s music.

Varisu Movie Review: An in-form Vijay and self-aware writing elevate this conventional family drama

Right from the posters and trailer to the pre-release interviews, everything about Varisu clearly indicated a formulaic family drama. This would have sounded like a foolproof plan a few years ago. But in 2023, an A-list actor sticking to this template isn't the most exciting idea. But director Vamshi Paidipally and Co have given this age-old recipe a refreshing twist by adding an ample dose of self-awareness and humour. Largely, the film knows when to take itself seriously and when not to. Take, for example, the scene where Meka Srikanth tries to throw a monologue on the divinity of family and love. Before we roll our eyes or take a dig at the cliche, we hear a burst of loud laughter... not from the fans but from the screen. It is Vijay who echoes the mind of the audience, and says, " Edhuku ipo avan kitta sentiment RR music ellam pottutu iruka nee? " Bingo! A potential 'content' for meme creators dodged thanks to the witty writing.

The writers of Varisu don't stop there. They make Vijay mouth dialogues like, " Indha sondhakaranga naale toxic dhaan pa! " in a film that paradoxically talks about the importance of family. Of course, this translates to occasional tonal inconsistencies, but an in-form Vijay and the self-awareness of the film make up for the shortcomings. Throughout the narrative, we see Vijay (who plays... Vijay!) transforming from an ambitious Harvard graduate to a globe-trotter, and then from a start-up founder to a business tycoon. While this arc isn't quite novel for a 'commercial hero', it is exciting to see Vijay slip into these roles with consummate ease. The film is peppered with references from his previous blockbusters. There is the knuckle-busting action from Thuppakki , the thumb-rubbing from Ghilli , and the open-arm entrance from Sarkar . Aside from the obvious call back to Poove Unakkaga , the film also drops enjoyable, quick references to the goat sacrifice scene in Thirupachi , the western-classical dance face-off in Pudhiya Geethai and Oh Baby song from Kadhalukku Mariyadhai .

Interestingly, Varisu which was widely speculated to retain the soul of blockbuster Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo , has its very own riotous boardroom scene, where the hero goes all filmy. But Vamshi does it with a rather tasteful twist. The film provides ample space for Vijay to be at his comical best. Whenever Vijay goes a bit overboard with his antics, Yogi Babu pitches in with his sarcasm, once again turning the stretch into effective humour. 

Known for his onscreen monologues, it is nice to see Vijay move away from sermoning despite playing a messiah again. Instead, Vijay embraces silence and allows his physical performance to do the talking. One particular instance where this facet is pronounced is his confrontation scene with Sarathkumar's Rajendran. In a scene with the potential to become a long-winding exchange of dialogues, Vijay delivers it all with just a look in his eyes and walks away.     However, Varisu isn't completely devoid of the ' Kudumbam na... ' messages, and the film does occasionally become preachy. But, thankfully these stretches aren't painfully long and never come across as moral policing assignments. However, what becomes painful and preachy is the contradictions in the ideologies. At one point, the makers don't judge or gaslight a woman who wants to move out of a marriage with an adulterer. At one other point, the resolution to this broken marriage is conventional, convenient, and contrived. It almost undoes the goodness of the initial pro-choice angle when it came to divorce and separation. Also, there is a fleeting but completely unnecessary body-shaming scene that is distasteful. 

If the novelty of the story is your yardstick to gauge a film, Varisu  might not rank high. It has plot points and ideas liberally borrowed from Chekka Chivantha Vaanam, Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo, Dharma Durai, and more. Despite the narrative being predictable,  it is the conviction of filmmaker Vamshi and the honest performances of the lead cast that elevates Varisu from being just another run-of-the-mill family drama. 

The film in a way is the story of Rajendran, a self-absorbed man seeking redemption and peace; and Sarathkumar ably shoulders the gloominess that comes along with the character, almost making up for his animated performance in the raging sequences. Jayasudha probably can pull off a mother longing for love even in her sleep. But the actor goes on to show why she is still the best fit for such roles. Though the camaraderie between Rajendran and Anantha Padmanaban (Prabhu) helps in making the core want of the protagonist effective, Prabhu has very less to offer otherwise. Similarly, I would have loved to see more of Rashmika Mandanna and definitely more layers to her character in the film. Seeing a female lead without a clear want or a profession is quite unsettling. 

The random appearance of " Indha paadalai paadi kondirupavar ungal Vijay " quote in 1995's Vishnu , is probably one of the oddest yet most memorable fourth-wall-breaking moments of Tamil cinema. Fast-forwarding two decades, we have another V film having a couple of interesting fourth-wall-breaking. The best among them is Vijay casually taking a dig at family dramas while making a confident statement. " Starting nala iruku, ending nala iruku, nadula konjam emotions iruku, avlo dhaan podhum! Kudumbangal kondadum vettri! " Well, it is safe to say that he isn't overconfident!

Varisu movie review: Predictable family drama that works only due to Vijay's presence

It is no surprise that mainstream filmmakers in the south still continue to milk the family drama genre to its last drop. In spite of the myriad iterations of the same story template over the years, it is one genre with a very high success rate. No wonder Vamshi Paidipally plays it extremely safe with Varisu, which marks his maiden collaboration with Vijay. It’s your quintessential family drama with all the familiar beats and it’s largely salvaged by the presence of one man, Vijay , who does all the heavy lifting and makes this a fairly engaging watch. The story is centered around a family that’s headlined by Rajendran (Sarath Kumar), who is one of the biggest businessmen in India. His two sons – Jai and Ajay (Srikanth and Shaam) - look after his business and one among them is hopeful of becoming the heir. One fine day when Rajendran learns that he is suffering from advanced-stage pancreatic cancer, he decides to fulfills his wife’s wish of celebrating his 65th birthday in a grand manner. Rajendran’s youngest son, Vijay Rajendran (Vijay), returns home after seven years for the birthday party at the behest of his mother. He had left home after a disagreement with his father over joining the family business. What happens in the family that forces Vijay to stay back and why does his father makes him the chairman of his group of companies?

Varisu is predictable from the word go but what still works in its favour is the mere presence of Vijay. Having predominantly worked in action films in recent years, it was refreshing to see Vijay have fun in an out-and-out family flick. Here’s a film that taps into Vijay’s comical side in a big way and it works like magic. It’s an effortless performance and one that appeals to even a non-Vijay fan. Every time predictability kicks in, Vijay walks in to distract and entertain with his pitch-perfect performance of a son who becomes the saviour of his family. Apart from Vijay, there isn’t a single factor that makes Varisu what it is. Nevertheless, it’s a film you won’t mind taking your family to this Pongal festival.

The familial moments, especially scenes between Vijay and Jayasudha (who plays the mother) work somewhat in an otherwise largely predictable film. For the family drama angle to have worked even more effectively, the conflict between the brothers should’ve been even more stronger. One thing that the film does manage to get right is deliver exactly what the trailer promised. As a viewer if you had walked in with your expectations in place after watching the trailer, you won’t be disappointed.

Vijay-starrer Varisu is out in theatres. Also starring Rashmika Mandanna, the film has been directed by Vamshi Paidipally, and produced by Dil Raju.

At the audio launch of the film, producer Dil Raju called it a complete family entertainer that will please Vijay’s fans across all age groups. The film clashes with Ajith’s Thunivu as they are both releasing on the same date. Earlier, Dil Raju ignited some controversy amongst the two stars’ fan base as he said that Vijay was a bigger star than Ajith.

In an interview with a Telugu channel, he said, “In Tamil Nadu , Ajith sir’s film is coming out with my film. In Tamil Nadu, Vijay sir is the number 1 star. Everybody knows that. There are 800-odd screens in the state and I’m begging them to give me more than 400 screens. I’m requesting at least 50 more screens. This is business. Even though I have a big film, I have to beg for screens. It’s not a monopoly, right?”

In 2014, Vijay’s Jilla clashed against Ajith’s Veeram and fan groups of the two stars have been in a dispute since then. The fan battle first came to light in 2001 when Ajith’s Dheena and Vijay’s Friends clashed at the box office.

Trade analyst Ramesh Bala compared it to Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan clashing at the box office and told Pinkvilla, “It is like Avengers and Avatar’s clash in Hollywood and Salman Khan-Shah Rukh Khan in Bollywood.” He added that since Tamil Nadu has around 1000 screens, the division of screens between the two stars has been a point of debate.

On day one of release, the film garnered approximately 67% occupancy, which increased during the day. Morning shows saw 55.6% occupancy, afternoon shows saw 68.6% occupancy; in the evening, the occupancy increased to 72.4%, and night shows witnessed 71.2% occupancy.

Early estimates suggest that Varisu grossed Rs 26.5 crore on day one of release, across India. Thunivu grossed Rs 26 crore.

According to industry data tracker Sacnilk, the film made Rs 17 crore in Tamil Nadu, Rs 5 crore in Karnataka, Rs 3.5 crore in Kerala and merely Rs 1 crore from other territories.

Indianexpress.com's Manoj Kumar R tweeted, "#Varisu has so much entertainment to offer. #Vijay delivers an enjoyable performance! I liked the self-aware nature of the movie. Kushboo Sundar was said to be playing a role in Vijay-starrer Varisu. While the actor had also expressed his gratitude for the actor at the film's audio launch, many are shocked that she was not seen in the film.

As per reports, both films are getting 80-90% occupancy in early shows. But the clash also means a share of the market, so the collections of both films might not be huge. It is a long extended weekend and holiday period so these Pongal releases can take advantage of that but it will depend on how Thunivu and Varisu are received.

Ajith and Vijay's movie shows will have the Tamil version of Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham's Pathaan trailer.

Fans in Kerala are excited to watch Vijay starrer Varisu.

The makers of Varisu will host a speical screening on Tuesday in Chennai.

Varisu boasts of songs crooned by Vijay, MM Manasi, Silambarasan, KS Chithra, Anirudh,Jonita Gandhi, Shankar Mahadevan, Karthik, Thaman S, Deepak Blue and Arvindh Srinivasan.

In an interview Vijay’s Varisu co-star Khushbu Sundar said, “While shooting for the climax of Varisu, Vijay was suffering from high fever. He took rest in a garage nearby and completed the shoot. Only after finishing the entire sequence, he got admitted in the hospital.”

Tiruppur Subramanian, TN Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association President, says, “There are about 1100 to 1200 screens in Tamil Nadu, and they will be shared equally between Thunivu and Varisu. There will be no unequal distribution in the number of screens.” Read More .

The Tamil Nadu government has cancelled the 4 am and 5 am shows of Vijay's Varisu from January 13 to January 16. Fans of the actor will not be allowed to anoint milk on the banners of the film placed outside the theaters.

Sreedhar Pillar shared that the total runtime of Varisu is 2 Hours 50 Minutes. 

A tweet from Karnataka Talkies, which tracks ticket sales in Karnataka, claims that the film has sold over 81,000 tickets in the state. "#Varisu has sold 81,500+ Tickets in Karnataka worth close to ?2 Crores," read teh tweet. 

Trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai shared on Twitter that Varisu will release in in 400+ screens in Kerala. The state has a total of 643 screens.

Vijay starrer Varisu is set to release on January 11. The film will release in Telugu states on January 14.

Trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai told Pinkvilla that both films might churn out an opening weekend of Rs 150 crore in Tamil Nadu. He added that the films could have avoided the clash if the makers or the stars would have had a healthy chat about it. "I personally think, if both the producers would have sat over the table or both the actors could have called each other to avoid the clash, that could have been much better for the industry. But in this case, the competition is big and the Southern stars have big egos about who is number one. Even in Bollywood, I don't see such clashes because there, distributors sit together and discuss but here, star power is overpowering stakeholders, distributors, cinema owners and so, they really don't have a say. A healthy two-week gap would have been advisable," he said.

In Telugu states, Varisu's release has been postponed by three days to avoid a clash with Thunivu. Vaarasudu, the film's Telugu version, will hit the screens of January 14. In Telugu states, Ajith's film is not facing any competition against Vijay but they will have to face Chiranjeevi's Waltair Veerayya and Balakrishna's Veera Simha Reddy.

Veera Simha Reddy is releasing on January 12 and Waltair Veerayya is releasing on January 13, which means that Thunivu will get a headstart in this sector.

VARISU MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE

Varisu is a film written and directed by Vamshi Paidipally and produced by Dil Raju and Sirish under the banner Shri Venkateswara Creations. The film has Thalapathy Vijay and Rashmika Mandanna as the lead actors while Sarathkumar, Jayasudha, SJ Suryah, Shaam, Srikanth, Yogi Babu, Prakash Raj, Ganesh Venkatraman, and others play supporting roles.

Vijay Rajendiran (played by Vijay) is the third and youngest son of Rajendiran (Sarathkumar). He stays away from home after a tiff with his father but circumstances force him to take up his father's multi-million business ahead of his elder brothers. How he manages to smoothen the strained relationships in his big joint family, as well as tackle the business enemies forms the rest of the film.

After two consecutive films where he portrayed roles with mental health issues like trauma in Beast and depression in Master, Vijay returns to the over-the-top zone with Varisu and the decision seems to be a smart one. It is often said that Telugu cinema directors understand the emotions of the mass audiences really well. And director Vamshi definitely seems to have cracked the code.

While the film chooses to settle in the family drama template like Ala Vaikunthapuramuloo it is self-aware completely, and that ends up as one of the biggest positives. It aids the film's humour quotient and that is bolstered further by Vijay's comedic timing. In the emotional scenes, stunts, and comedic scenes, he makes acting seem like a cakewalk. It's all so effortless.

Vijay's charm, screen presence, and charisma make us look past the flaws in the film's screenplay. His dance moves set the theatres on fire, the action sequences are stylish, and there are a lot of cute moments spread all over. But all this is only till a certain point. The second half surges ahead with Vijay's rise as the boss but the screenplay starts lagging with unnecessary plot points cropping up.

Among the other actors, Yogi Babu scores almost every time he's on screen. Jayasudha and Sarathkumar as Vijay's mother and father get memorable roles as well. Rashmika's character could have been written more meaty. Shaam and Srikanth shine as Ajay and Jai - Vijay's siblings.

Thaman's music takes time to settle in, and the loud nature of the background score blends well as the film progresses. A couple of songs hinder the film's pace. KL Praveen's cuts and Karthik Palani's cinematography add good values to make the film technically solid.

Overall the film has all elements to end up as a pucca family entertainer and a Pongal feast. Vijay's comic sense stands out and is the backbone of the film. It does have a few flaws but at the end of the day, when you look at the film as a theatrical experience, it is worth your money and time. The boss returns. In style.

Varisu Movie Review

Vijay’s improvisation and histrionics make varisu a largely engaging entertainer below goes our varisu movie review..

When it was announced that Thalapathy Vijay is indeed taking up a full-fledged family drama in the form of Varisu, the fans took a step back to realize how it had taken years for a Vijay film to work out well in that genre. But thankfully, Vamshi Paidipally’s Varisu is a neat and enjoyable entertainer that celebrates the star in all the ways that it can, while also delivering a fine entertainer on the whole.

Vijay Rajendran (Vijay) is the third son to Rajendran (Sarathkumar), and one who has lived the last few years of his life away from his family. When an unexpected turn hits the family, Vijay has to find his way back into the house, and has lots of things to do in mending and minding the business back together while also solving the familial issues. Varisu has a very simple one-liner that is as old as the hills, but it is Vamshi Paidipally’s matured handling of the subject that makes the film good to watch. The director (along with solid contribution from writer Vivek) makes the first half flow slowly and steadily by introducing us to all the characters and the issues in the household. Moving forward, Vamshi opens the beats of the family and then provides ample space for Vijay to take up and improvise every scene on his own, which in turn helps the film largely. The result is a lovely entertainer that despite its missteps, is worth watching on the big screen.

Thalapathy Vijay delivers a comfortable and enjoyable performance as Vijay Rajendran, and it is refreshing to see him in a role that is devoid of any sort of violence. Vijay’s character here also has many throwbacks to his popular blockbusters, which are all worth the cheers on the big screen.

After him, it definitely would be the duo of Sarathkumar and Jayasudha who offer superb contributions to the film, and keep it going smoothly. Prakash Raj, Srikanth, Shaam and the others in the cast all come and fit the bill, while Rashmika is a piece of eye-candy who does well in the songs.

The film is technically decent, for Karthik Palani’s very good camerawork is hampered by the overdose of CG and green mat shots in the film. Thaman’s work here is extraordinary, and the composer has not just delivered really good songs but has also tightened the screws in solid fashion with respect to the background score. On the flipside, few of the subplots in the film could have been toned down which in turn would have reduced the runtime.

Varisu is far from being a perfect entertainer that gets everything right. But yes, the film treats itself scene by scene, and perfects out what the fans want and also what the families want. A Vijay film coming in such a package is definitely worth a visit to the theatre, say what.  Varisu Movie Review by Siddarth Srinivas

Varisu review: Vijay lends life to this otherwise cliched storyline

Director Vamshi Paidipally’s maiden Tamil venture is more of a crowd-pleaser that pays a tribute to Thalapathy Vijay.

Telugu director Vamshi Paidipally is debuting in Tamil with Thalapathy Vijay-starrer Varisu ( Varasudu in Telugu) today, 11 January. Here’s our review of the much-anticipated movie of this Pongal season:

To make sure that he has the right successor for the family business, Rajendran (Sarathkumar) pits his sons against each other. His elder sons Jai (Srikanth) and Ajay (Shaam) have their eyes on the chairpersonship.

However, Rajendran’s third son Vijay chooses to stay away from the chairmanship as he differs from his father’s ideology and modes of operation.

But Vijay is declared the successor to Rajendran after the latter sees his elder sons for who they really are. The second half deals with what happens next.

Overtly dramatic and predictable

Varisu starts like a Vikraman’s version of Chekka Chivantha Vaanam (2018) but in a Kabhi Kushi Kabhie Gham (2001) backdrop.

It has many problems: Right from the TV serial kind of makeup and drama in the first half to the dreamy Bollywood/Karan Johar kind of massive sets and, of course, the exhausting runtime (2 hours 50 minutes)!

The film is predictable in every frame. It is neither self-contained nor original.

Vijay’s one-man show

But, guess what? Even with all these issues, Varisu still works. For, Vijay carries the film like Atlas carries the Earth on his shoulders for all eternity.

Vijay as Vijay Rajendran is perfect to the T. He lends life to the otherwise cliched storyline.

He is in outstanding form. He looks super, his costumes are fabulous, he dances like a river flow, trolls his own dialogues, and he does comedy and emotional scenes well.

In a nutshell, this is a one-man show. The major strength of this movie is in how damn likeable Vijay is.

Thaman rocks it

Other than Vijay, two more things work in favour of Varisu : Music composer Thaman S and comedian Yogi Babu.

Thaman does a brilliant job as a music director. The background score is sometimes loud but perfect for the respective scenes. He elevates many scenes with dynamic soundtracks.

Yogi Babu’s comedy timing is superb and keeps us entertained all through. In fact, every time he appears on screen, we hear the audience bursting into laughter.

Actors’ performances

Srikanth as Jai, Shaam as Ajay and Sarathkumar as Rajendran are good.

Jayasudha is also good as a mother who struggles between a corporate husband and power-hungry sons.

Rashmika Mandanna does not have much to do but is good at whatever she got. She doesn’t go overboard. Others are okayish.

Do watch out for the “ Soul of Varisu ” and “ Ranjithamee ” songs besides the voting scene at the company.

Grandeur everywhere

Director Vamshi Paidipally does what he knows well: Bringing grandeur into everything.

For example, the villain comes in a helicopter instead of an SUV, and Rajendran’s family stays in Mysore palace in the name of a house, a function bigger than the wedding of Ravi Pillai’s daughter!

However, Vamshi did a laudable job by beautifully presenting Vijay’s loveable character. He also wins by giving back-to-back theatre moments in the second half.

The comedy one-liners in the melodrama scenes help Varisu from not becoming too melodramatic. With a lesser runtime, it would have worked even better.

The cinematography is really good. The computer graphics works could have been better.

Varisu works like a tribute to Thalapathy Vijay and it is exactly what the trailer promised. The second half is a crowd-pleaser. It’s silly, crazy, and entertaining, too, because the marvellous Vijay makes it work!

'Varisu' movie review: An in-form Vijay elevates this  family drama

Right from the posters and trailer to the pre-release interviews, everything about Varisu clearly indicated a formulaic family drama. This would have sounded like a foolproof plan a few years ago. But in 2023, an A-list actor sticking to this template isn’t the most exciting idea.

But director Vamshi Paidipally and Co have given this age-old recipe a refreshing twist by adding an ample dose of self-awareness and humour. Largely, the film knows when to take itself seriously and when not to. Take, for example, the scene where Meka Srikanth tries to throw a monologue on the divinity of family and love. Before we roll our eyes or take a dig at the cliche, we hear a burst of loud laughter... not from the fans but from the screen. It is Vijay who echoes the mind of the audience, and says, “Edhuku ipo avan kitta sentiment RR music ellam pottutu iruka nee?” Bingo! A potential ‘content’ for meme creators dodged thanks to the witty writing.

The writers of Varisu don’t stop there. They make Vijay mouth dialogues like, “Indha sondhakaranga naale toxic dhaan pa!” in a film that paradoxically talks about the importance of family. Of course, this translates to occasional tonal inconsistencies, but an in-form Vijay and the self-awareness of the film make up for the shortcomings. Throughout the narrative, we see Vijay (who plays... Vijay!) transforming from an ambitious Harvard graduate to a globe-trotter, and then from a start-up founder to a business tycoon. While this arc isn’t quite novel for a ‘commercial hero’, it is exciting to see Vijay slip into these roles with consummate ease.

The film is peppered with references from his previous blockbusters. There is the knuckle-busting action from Thuppakki , the thumb-rubbing from Ghilli, and the open-arm entrance from Sarkar . Aside from the obvious call back to Poove Unakkaga , the film also drops enjoyable, quick references to the goat sacrifice scene in Thirupachi, the western-classical dance face-off in Pudhiya Geethai and Oh Baby song from Kadhalukku Mariyadhai .

Interestingly, Varisu which was widely speculated to retain the soul of blockbuster Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo, has its very own riotous boardroom scene, where the hero goes all filmy. But Vamshi does it with a rather tasteful twist. The film provides ample space for Vijay to be at his comical best. Whenever Vijay goes a bit overboard with his antics, Yogi Babu pitches in with his sarcasm, once again turning the stretch into effective humour.

Known for his onscreen monologues, it is nice to see Vijay move away from sermoning despite playing a messiah again. Instead, Vijay embraces silence and allows his physical performance to do the talking. One particular instance where this facet is pronounced is his confrontation scene with Sarathkumar’s Rajendran. In a scene with the potential to become a long-winding exchange of dialogues, Vijay delivers it all with just a look in his eyes and walks away.  

However, Varisu isn’t completely devoid of the ‘Kudumbam na...’ messages, and the film does occasionally become preachy. But, thankfully these stretches aren’t painfully long and never come across as moral policing assignments. However, what becomes painful and preachy is the contradictions in the ideologies. At one point, the makers don’t judge or gaslight a woman who wants to move out of a marriage with an adulterer. At one other point, the resolution to this broken marriage is conventional, convenient, and contrived. It almost undoes the goodness of the initial pro-choice angle when it came to divorce and separation. Also, there is a fleeting but completely unnecessary body-shaming scene that is distasteful.

If the novelty of the story is your yardstick to gauge a film, Varisu might not rank high. It has plot points and ideas liberally borrowed from Chekka Chivantha Vaanam, Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo, Dharma Durai , and more. Despite the narrative being predictable,  it is the conviction of filmmaker Vamshi and the honest performances of the lead cast that elevates Varisu from being just another run-of-the-mill family drama.

The film in a way is the story of Rajendran, a self-absorbed man seeking redemption and peace; and Sarathkumar ably shoulders the gloominess that comes along with the character, almost making up for his animated performance in the raging sequences. Jayasudha probably can pull off a mother longing for love even in her sleep. But the actor goes on to show why she is still the best fit for such roles. Though the camaraderie between Rajendran and Anantha Padmanaban (Prabhu) helps in making the core want of the protagonist effective, Prabhu has very less to offer otherwise.

Similarly, I would have loved to see more of Rashmika Mandanna and definitely more layers to her character in the film. Seeing a female lead without a clear want or a profession is quite unsettling. The random appearance of “Indha paadalai paadi kondirupavar ungal Vijay” quote in 1995’s Vishnu, is probably one of the oddest yet most memorable fourth-wall-breaking moments of Tamil cinema. Fast-forwarding two decades, we have another V film having a couple of interesting fourth-wall-breaking moments. The best among them is Vijay casually taking a dig at family dramas while making a confident statement. “Starting nala iruku, ending nala iruku, nadula konjam emotions iruku, avlo dhaan podhum! Kudumbangal kondadum vettri!” Well, it is safe to say that he isn’t overconfident!

'Oppenheimer' premieres in Japan. Some Hiroshima survivors, Japanese residents are distressed.

The Oscars'  best picture winner "Oppenheimer"  premiered in Japan on Friday, nearly nine months after its global release, amid concerns about how the country would receive the movie as a victim of the atomic bombing.

Christopher Nolan 's film focuses on physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer ( Cillian Murphy ), who led the race to develop the atomic bomb, although the effects on the people of Japan are not depicted. American atomic bombs  devastated the western city of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to the south at the close of World War II, killing more than 200,000 people.

Images on social media showed signs posted at the entrances to some Tokyo theaters, warning that the movie featured images of nuclear tests that could evoke the damage caused by the bombs.

The film was received with mixed reviews from Japanese residents, as well as those in the U.S. who are still suffering from the effects of nuclear bomb testing in Nevada. While some believe the film is a needed cautionary tale about mass destruction, others have felt the film focuses overly on Oppenheimer rather than the victims.

Former Hiroshima mayor criticizes 'Oppenheimer,' some Japanese viewers leave theater in distress

Former Hiroshima Mayor Takashi Hiraoka, who attended an earlier media screening of "Oppenheimer," criticized the absence of humanity for Hiroshima residents. "From Hiroshima’s standpoint, the horror of nuclear weapons was not sufficiently depicted," he told Japanese reporters, according to The Associated Press .

He added: "The film was made in a way to validate the conclusion that the atomic bomb was used to save the lives of Americans."

Hiroshima resident Kawai, who would only give his family name to Reuters, made similar criticism, telling the news agency, "The film also depicts the atomic bomb in a way that seems to praise it, and, as a person with roots in Hiroshima, I found it difficult to watch."

"I'm not sure this is a movie that Japanese people should make a special effort to watch," Kawai concluded.

Yujin Yaguchi, a professor of American studies at the University of Tokyo, told The New York Times the film "celebrates a tiny group of white male scientists who really enjoyed their privilege and their love of political power" rather than giving a voice to victims in Japan and America.

"We should focus more on why such a rather one-sided story of white men continues to attract such attention and adulation in the U.S. and what it says about the current politics and the larger politics of memory in the U.S. (and elsewhere)," Yaguchi added.

Toshiyuki Mimaki, a co-chair of Hidankyo, an atomic bomb survivors group, was left disappointed after leaving the theater, he told The Guardian .

"I was waiting for the Hiroshima bombing scene to appear, but it never did. It’s important to show the full story, including the victims, if we are going to have a future without nuclear weapons," Mimaki said.

Japanese viewers leave 'Oppenheimer' feeling sympathy for the physicist

Speaking to Reuters before the movie opened, atomic bomb survivor Teruko Yahata said she was eager to see it, in hopes that it would re-invigorate the debate over nuclear weapons.

Yahata, now 86, said she felt some empathy for the physicist behind the bomb. That sentiment was echoed by Rishu Kanemoto, a 19-year-old student, who saw the film on Friday.

"Hiroshima and Nagasaki, where the atomic bombs were dropped, are certainly the victims," Kanemoto said. "But I think even though the inventor (Oppenheimer) is one of the perpetrators, he's also the victim caught up in the war."

Masao Tomonaga, an atomic bomb survivor and honorary director of the Japanese Red Cross Nagasaki Atomic Bomb hospital, called the lack of survivors a "weakness" in The Guardian. However, "Oppenheimer’s lines in dozens of scenes showed his shock at the reality of the atomic bombing. That was enough for me."

Moviegoer and Nagasaki resident Koichi Takeshita similarly told NPR , "The last look of Oppenheimer in the film was that of pain. It was a look of either regret, because he was the person who made the A-bomb, or he didn't know what to do and was sad, as tens of thousands of people died."

Shogo Tachiyama, a university student, told The Guardian the movie was good for educational purposes as the full story wasn't taught to him in Japan. "We learned about the bombing and its aftermath at primary school, but I knew nothing about Oppenheimer," he said.

Tachiyama added: "I learned a lot from the film, and it’s made me think again about what I and other young people can do … starting from the insistence that nuclear weapons should never be used again."

New Mexicans, downwind survivors still seeking reparations speak out amid 'Oppenheimer'

During the Cold War,  the United States detonated 928 nuclear bombs in the Nevada desert , many of which were  more powerful than those that decimated Hiroshima and Nagasaki .

Oppenheimer’s Trinity test  sent a cloud of fallout over communities downwind of Los Alamos and  into 46 states , according to a new study, catapulting the world into the nuclear age. The Atomic Energy Commission's decision to  ignore , and then  cover up , the danger has left a trail of suffering and death that continues.

Mary Dickson, an author and activist against nuclear weapons, wrote about the effects of Oppenheimer's testing in an op-ed for USA TODAY in August.

"As a child in Salt Lake City, my thyroid absorbed this radiation. Years later,  I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer  and suffered other health complications that left me unable to have children. For others, the poison went into the teeth, bones, liver, lungs, pancreas, breasts, soft tissue and reproductive organs. The damage caused can take decades to manifest as life-threatening illnesses," Dickson wrote.

Mark Shapiro, producer and co-director of the 2023 documentary " Downwind ," also called for more attention to New Mexico residents and others affected by the bombings.,

The film "exposes a tragic, largely forgotten and unforgivable chapter of U.S. history and the ongoing health consequences for Americans and global citizens, addressing the current state of the downwinders, the hopeful expansion of RECA (Radiation Exposure Compensation Act) and the continued tenacity of heroic activists who won't be stopped in their pursuit of government accountability and humanitarian justice," Shapiro wrote in a USA TODAY op-ed in March ahead of big wins for "Oppenheimer" at the Oscars.

Knockout success of Yolo – the feelgood female boxing movie from China

Director and star Jia Ling – who reportedly lost 50kg to make comedy that rivals Dune 2 at box office – insists ‘it’s not a diet movie, not even about boxing’

I n a country where cinemas are normally dominated by wolf warrior blockbusters or nationalist historical epics, the surprise hit of China’s box office in 2024 is a feelgood comedy about a woman who transforms her lacklustre life – and herself – through boxing.

Released for the lunar new year holiday on 10 February, Yolo (You Only Live Once) has become the highest grossing film of the year in China, earning more than 3.4bn yuan (£375m) in less than two months, according to the China Movie Information Network. Globally, it is second only to Dune 2.

Critics and cinemagoers are divided about whether the film, a lighthearted comedy which has drawn comparisons with Rocky, is feminist or not. It is directed by and stars Jia Ling, a well-known comedian, who reportedly lost 50kg for the role in order to perform the physical as well as mental transformation of the main character, Du Leying, sparking a debate about body image. In February, Jia wrote on Weibo: “It’s not a diet movie, it’s not even about boxing”.

But Jia’s success as a female film-maker is undoubtedly a triumph. Her first film, the 2021 semi-autobiographical comedy Hi, Mom made her the highest-grossing solo female director of all time – until Greta Gerwig took that title in 2023 with Barbie.

Her latest is the only film in the top 10 to be directed by a woman. Films by male directors often “make women seem scared and worried”, said Qiu Yuan, a teacher in Beijing, who saw Yolo three times in the cinema, taking her mother and a female friend along for the second and third viewings. But in Yolo, the main character wants to “become awesome”. Du’s goal “isn’t to lose weight, it’s to exercise and win”.

The film – known in Chinese as Re la guntang (Hot and spicy) – follows the life of Du, who starts out as a depressed, overweight, 30-something graduate who has withdrawn from society and lives with her parents. After an argument with her sister forces her to move out from the family home, a chance encounter with a coach at a neighbourhood boxing gym sparks a journey of self-transformation.

Whether as an artistic choice or to pass China’s strict censorship regime for film releases, Yolo keeps its focus on Du’s personal life. “A lot of unpleasant experiences happen to her, but they are all limited to the realm of her friends and family, rather than things happening because of systematic unfairness in society,” said Yu Yaqin, an independent film critic in Beijing.

But in a patriarchal society where women face many barriers in their personal and professional lives, and where overt discussions of feminism are limited, the film has struck a nerve, particularly with female cinemagoers.

Qiu said that women in China lack inspiring figures such as Jia. “In the west, there are many women who are role models. In my life, my family, my friends, there are no role models or feminists,” she said. Yolo “doesn’t say it’s a feminist film”, in part because it would be difficult for Jia to make such a statement publicly, Qiu said, “but when I take my friends who are not interested in feminism to see this film, they think little by little about how a woman can change her life through working on herself.”

Yu believes that much of the film’s success can be attributed to Jia’s fame and a curiosity among cinemagoers to see her dramatic weight loss. Jia is a familiar face on Chinese television, having risen to fame as a comedy performer in the 2010s.

Yolo “is a really successful film in commercial terms, but it is not an artistic film”, said Yu. “If this film was exactly the same but didn’t have Jia Ling, it wouldn’t be very popular.”

Sony has acquired the international distribution rights for the film, which will be released in the UK on 5 April. Some commentators have questioned whether the film’s times slapstick humour and at times crude jokes will be as successful among western audiences, especially given the fact that Jia is not well known outside China.

But in China, where an increasing number of women are choosing, like Yolo’s Du, to remain unmarried and child-free into their 30s, the film has resonated beyond Jia’s star quality. And although Yolo “is not a perfect feminist film,” said Yu, its popularity will “still encourage female directors in China, not just in film, but across the whole arts industry”.
