Theses and dissertations

The library holds a large number of Bristol theses and dissertations, including many PhD and doctoral theses. Read our advice about how to locate theses from other institutions, both in the UK and internationally .

University of Bristol theses and dissertations

To find a University of Bristol thesis:

  • If the thesis is held in the Research Reserve, it can be requested using the 'reserve a copy' button.
  • If the thesis is held in the Research Reserve, use the online request form to request it.
  • See below for details of how to access theses held in our other library sites.
  • Recently submitted theses may be listed on Explore Bristol Research  though information about these is regularly added to Library Search.

Arts and Social Sciences

The collection includes theses from Arts Faculty, Social Sciences and Law Faculty, Physics, Mathematics, Biological Sciences, Geographical Sciences, Agricultural Science and the School for Policy Studies.

MA, MSc, MPhil and MLitts do not have to be deposited with the library under the Regulations, so our collections of these are incomplete. 

How to consult a thesis

  • We will notify you when the thesis arrives at the library.
  • Thesis loans are for use in the Arts and Social Sciences Library only.

School of Chemistry PhD, MSc and DSc theses from 1910 to date.

Thesis loans are for use in the Chemistry Library only, though postgraduates with seats may keep a thesis at their desk. You may ask if a particular thesis can be kept behind the Issue desk if you will be using it repeatedly for a period of time. Other theses are kept in a Library Staff room and are not available during the evenings.

School of Education EdD, PhD, MPhil, and a selection of Masters theses. Many theses written before 2005 are located in the Research Reserve.

  • The MSc and Masters theses are located in the Quiet Study Area;
  • The MPhil, PhD and EdDs are located in Research Reserve.  See 'to find a University of Bristol thesis' section above for details of how to request.

The thesis collection from the Medical Library has been relocated to the library's Research Reserve. The collection includes: PhD, MD, MSc, ChM and DSc theses of staff and postgraduate students of the Health Sciences Faculty, from 1910 to date.

A card catalogue in the Medical Library contains details of the earlier theses, or you may check the  Card Catalogue Online .

School of Physics PhD, MSc and DSc theses from 1950 to date, with a few earlier ones. BSc and MSci projects are also held.

A card catalogue in the Physics Library contains details of the earlier ones.

  • Ask at the Issue Desk to borrow a thesis, quoting author, year and category;
  • Theses may be borrowed by staff and postgraduates as standard loans;
  • Undergraduates may use theses in the library only;
  • BSc and MSci projects may be borrowed by undergraduates: for the standard loan period.

Queens (Engineering, Mathematics, Computer science)

Engineering and Mathematics PhD theses are held in the Research Reserve, including Computer Science theses before the Department transferred to the Faculty of Engineering.  See 'to find a University of Bristol thesis' section above for details of how to request these.

A card catalogue, on the right beyond the Issue desk, contains details of pre-1978 theses.

  • It can take 2-3 working days for a thesis to arrive and you will be notified when they are available;
  • PhD theses may not be borrowed by undergraduates; taught postgraduates or external members but may be consulted in the library.

MSc Projects

  • Some early Engineering MSc projects (1914-1950) are available from the Research Reserve - please contact your  Subject Librarian

Undergraduate projects

  • Individual and group projects from 2015/16 - 2019/20 academic years for Civil and Mechanical Engineering are available on the open shelves in the Gallery.
  • Early projects from 1920 to 1949 have been moved to  Special Collections  in the  Arts and Social Sciences Library

Veterinary Sciences

MSc Meat Science theses from 1979 to date and a small number of PhD theses. The majority of veterinary sciences PhD theses are housed in the Research Reserve.  See 'to find a University of Bristol thesis' section above for details of how to request.

Theses are shelved in the Computer Room and are for use in the library only.

Wills Memorial (Law, Earth Sciences)

Collections of both Law and Earth Sciences theses.

Theses are confined to the library; please ask at the information desk if you wish to borrow one.

UK and international theses

Information about many UK and international theses can be found via  Library Search . If the thesis you are interested in is not available online, you can use our  inter-Library Loan service . Non-UK theses can be difficult to obtain: in some countries, universities are working together to make full text electronic collections available:

Databases are really useful when searching for journal articles. They search across lots of journals at the same time and their search engines are more powerful and advanced search engines than Google or Library Search. You may need to search across multiple databases to find a broader range of literature. They are trustworthy, scholarly sources with clear citation information.

If you want to know more about the resources you will find in a particular database, click on the  i  symbol to see more information.

The following databases may be useful for your subject:

Multidiscipline Databases

Multidisciplinary databases  do not include research on a specific topic. They will include resources on education and may be particularly useful for topics where education overlaps with other subjects like health or equality.

African journal literature originating from a wide base of publishers and societies on the African continent

Current and historical literature related to growth and development of children through the age of 21. This database contains journal articles, technical reports, books, book chapters, theses and dissertations.

IBSS includes journal articles and to books, reviews and selected chapters dating back to 1951. It is unique in its broad coverage of international material and incorporates over 100 languages and countries.

JSTOR is a digital library of academic journals, books, and primary sources.

Science, social science, and arts and humanities research in published in open access journals from Latin America, Spain, Portugal, the Caribbean and South Africa.

Scopus includes references to journal articles, conference proceedings and books relating to science, technology, medicine, social sciences and arts & humanities.

Search the world’s leading scholarly journals, books, and proceedings in the sciences, social sciences, and arts and humanities. Includes: Science Citation Index; Social sciences Citation Index; Arts and Humanities Citation Index; Arts and Humanities Citation Index; Conference Proceedings Citation Index - Science; Conference Proceedings Citation Index - Social Science & Humanities.

Education Specific Databases

  • African Education Research Database less... The online African Education Research Database (AERD) aims to raise the visibility of African research. It is a curated collection of research with implications for educational policy and practice undertaken in the past decade by scholars based in sub-Saharan Africa. The AERD includes peer-reviewed articles, chapters, PhD theses and working papers.

The Australian Education Index is a comprehensive collection of educational research documents relating to educational trends, policy, and practices and is Australia's largest source of education information. Coverage includes trends and practices in teaching, learning and educational management.

The British Education Index provides information on research, policy and practice in education and training in the UK. It covers all aspects of education from preschool to higher education. Sources include education and training journals, mostly published in the UK. Some international literature is included.

  • Database of Research on International Education less... A database of research relevant to international education, managed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) and supported by IDP Education.
  • The Digital Education Repository Archive (DERA) less... The Digital Education Repository Archive (DERA) is a digital archive of documents published electronically by government and other relevant bodies in the areas of education, training, children and families. The repository includes documents published electronically by the UK Government, UK Parliament (including devolved Assemblies), government departments, semi-official organisations (quangos) and think tanks in the areas of education, training, children and families. All publications are added subject to copyright permission and are available in perpetuity.

Education Abstracts indexes journals and books, as far back as 1983. Subject coverage includes adult education, continuing education, literacy standards, multicultural/ethnic education, teaching methods and much more.

Educational Administration Abstracts covers areas related to educational administration, including educational leadership, educational management and educational research.

  • Education Policy and Research Service less... The Education Policy and Research Service (EPRS) is an efficient way of keeping up to date with key research, policy, and developments in the English education system. It provides a monthly digest of the latest research and policy from key government bodies, universities, and thinktanks summarised into two-page reports. UoB staff and students have access to this service, but you will need to contact your subject librarian or [email protected] for an access code.

ERIC, the Education Resource Information Center, includes journal articles, research reports, curriculum and teaching guides, conference papers, dissertations and theses, and books dating back to 1966.

Research into Higher Education Abstracts includes international periodicals relevant to the theory and practice of higher education and also offers a selective coverage of books and monographs.

Teacher Reference Center provides indexing and abstracts for 280 periodicals. Topics include: Assessment, Best Practices, Continuing Education, Current Pedagogical Research, Curriculum Development, Elementary Education, Higher Education, Instructional Media, Language Arts, Literacy Standards, School Administration, Science & Mathematics, and Teacher Education.

Policy Documents 

These databases index materials produced by those who create or seek to influence policy. This includes Governments, charities, think tanks and NGOs.

Eldis provides free access to relevant, up-to-date and diverse research on international development issues. Eldis is hosted by the Institute of Development Studies.

NB: This database can be browsed on campus without signing into the Overton site. Off campus, users need to register on the Overton registration page with their @bristol.ac.uk email address. Overton allows users to discover policy documents in 180 countries and explore their links to each other and to the academic research that has informed them. Overton indexes work from governments, universities, IGOs, NGOs, research funders, publishers and think tanks to understand their role in the policymaking landscape. Users can track the evolution of ideas all the way from academic and think tank research to government reports and legislation.

Use Policy Commons to discover and follow high-quality policy research from 210 countries and territories produced by world’s leading policy experts, charities, think tanks, IGOs and NGOs. The majority of print dissertations in the UC Berkeley Libraries are from UC Berkeley. The libraries have a nearly complete collection of Berkeley doctoral dissertations (wither online, in print, or both), and a large number of Berkeley master's theses.

Index and full text of graduate dissertations and theses from North American and European schools and universities, including the University of California, with full text of most doctoral dissertations from UC Berkeley and elsewhere from 1996 forward. Dissertations published prior to 2009 may not include information about the department from which the degree was granted.

Selected UC Berkeley master's theses freely available online. For theses published prior to 2020, check UC Library Search for print availability (see "At the Library" below). 

UC Berkeley dissertations may also be found in eScholarship , UC's online open access repository.

Please note that it may take time for a dissertation to appear in one of the above online resources. Embargoes and other issues affect the release timing.

Master's theses : From 2020 onwards, theses are only available online. See above links. 

To locate older dissertations, master's theses, and master's projects in print, search UC Library Search by keyword, title or author. For publications prior to 2009 you may also include a specific UC Berkeley department in your search:  berkeley dissertations <department name> .

More than 40,000 theses and dissertations produced at the University of Arizona are included in the UA Theses and Dissertations collections. These items are publicly available and full-text searchable. A small percentage of items are under embargo (restricted).

  • Submitting master's theses to the UA Libraries was optional for many decades; as a result, we do not have all master's theses that were written at the University of Arizona.
  • A small number of historical theses containing culturally sensitive material are not available online.

    Abstract This thesis is inspired by the archive of materials collated by the late Sister Bonaventure Kelleher of Brecon. Over several decades local historian Sister Bonaventure gathered extensive evidence of playbills, newspaper articles and cuttings to reveal the market town of Brecon in mid-Wales as an eighteenth and nineteenth century theatrical centre.
