ESL Teacher Resume Sample With No Experience
Most ESL teacher resumes are written and sent off through a digital channel. This works for everyone, including hiring managers who actually prefer an inbox that is full of resumes, rather than a desk overflowing with paper resumes!
Do what others are not doing nowadays. Send a paper resume. Even if you send one through an email, augmenting your candidature by sending it in paper form will work wonders for your chances to be called for an interview.
Hundreds of resumes are in the inbox versus some on the desk (considering others might have thought to do the same).
What has a better chance?
The latter, of course!
This can actually be quite workable for you if you are applying for a position for which you have had little or no experience i.e. an entry-level resume.
So begin typing on your word processor, feed the printer, and send a neatly printed resume to the hiring manager.
Here is a sample resume for an ESL teacher that you can look through to determine the format:

The Inside Scoop on How to Write A Resume that Will Get You Hired As an English Teacher Abroad
There's an old cliché that "You never get a second chance to make a first impression" and when you apply for jobs teaching English abroad - or just about any job for that matter - your resume, or "CV", can make or break your chances of getting an interview and ultimately the job you want. Here are some key points to help you put together a killer resume that will greatly enhance your prospects of getting the job you want teaching English abroad, whether it be in China , Spain , Argentina or anywhere else.
*Note: This article is an excerpt from the 350-page International TEFL Academy (ITA) Job Search Guidance Manual that is provided exclusively to International TEFL Academy students and graduates as part of their lifetime Job Search Guidance . It was prepared by expert job placement advisors in the Student Affairs Department at ITA, who provide personal assistance to hundreds of students and graduates each year with their resumes and cover letters in addition to other aspects of the job search and interviewing process .
The TEFL Resume Basics
While putting together your international resume, always remember that you are marketing yourself as an English teacher who is prepared to move to a new country, adapt, and serve the needs of your students and the school that hires you .
You should highlight any and all teaching experience, training experience, and international experience you have. You must also be prepared to provide personal information that is not typically required in the United States or other countries, including your racial background, your age, and your marital status. You may also see the abbreviations listed for a CV. This is Curriculum Vitae (it is Latin for "Course of Life").
When to Use a Curriculum Vitae (CV):
When should job seekers use a Curriculum Vitae, rather than a resume? In the United States, a Curriculum Vitae is used primarily when applying for academic, education, scientific, or research positions. It is also applicable when applying for fellowships or grants.
The Differences between a Resume and a CV
There are several differences between a curriculum vitae and a resume. A curriculum vitae is a longer (up to two or more pages), more detailed synopsis of your background and skills. A CV includes a summary of your educational and academic backgrounds as well as teaching and research experience, publications, presentations, awards, honors, affiliations and other details. As with a resume, you may need different versions of a CV for different types of positions.
Top TEFL CV Guidelines
- Highlight your educational, academic pursuits, as well as public service and examples of your ability to adapt and work with others. Note that your educational background may be given more attention than your actual work experience.
- If you are not a native English speaker, highlight and emphasize your fluency and work any work or academic studies that you have accomplished in English.
- List your education, skills, certification, and coursework in a clear and concise manner.
- Always include your country code with your telephone number.
- Use basic and simple formatting and avoid complex graphics or anything else that may not translate when viewed on an alternate (or more primitive) operating system. Italics and font changes should be avoided.
- Remember that not everybody who reads your resume is a native English speaker, or even a fluent English speaker, so avoid non-education-related jargon and avoid abbreviations like “Mgr.” or “V.P.” Use “Manager” or “Vice President.”
- Include a photo, preferably a professional-looking headshot. In Asia in particular many schools are keen to know that potential teachers look professional.
Basic TEFL Resume Format
The following list will help you understand how to make your TEFL resume stand out:
1. Add Your Personal Information
List your name, contact information, citizenship/nationality, any work/residency visas that you may hold (particularly in the country where you seek employment), gender, age, and marital status. This is listed at the top left of your resume. It may seem unusual or intrusive to an American but this is standard around the world for international jobs.
2. List Your Education And Certificates
Include any and all programs, degrees, certifications, and other formal training programs that you attended in-person or online. This section is where you want to put your TEFL certificate on your resume.
Where to put TEFL certification on your resume?
Highlight your TEFL Certification, including the number of hours, hours of practicum at or near the top of the education section of your resume or cv. Note that the course is internationally accredited and meets or exceeds all international standards.
- List your highest-level qualifications first.
- Be specific and detailed about the institution, major, campus location, date of completion of final degrees listed.
- If you are applying for an ESL Teaching assignment and do not have an Education Degree, mention courses taken in related fields including English literature, journalism, public speaking and foreign languages.
3. Highlight Your Skills
Summarize your skills in education, foreign languages, computers, animation, sales, and any other areas. Example: HTML, Adobe, Quark and Flash Programmer. Fluent in Spanish, working knowledge of German.
4. Share Your Career Experience
List your past employers, job titles, and dates of employment for each position you have held over the past 10 years.
- Bear in mind that many foreign companies and institutions are very keen on job titles.
- Be very clear and concise in your descriptions.
- List your work experience starting with the most recent or relevant assignment.
- For each position, list your Job Title (using universal career titles), list the start and end dates, list the Company’s name and its location, and be sure to highlight any relevant accomplishments and accolades as well responsibilities.
- You may be right out of college and have little job experience. Highlight relevant activities to teaching, i.e. teaching or working at a summer camp, tutoring. Don’t forget to list your volunteer work in an ESL classroom for your practicum. Paid or free experience is still the same experience.
5. Add in Extracurricular Activities and Accomplishments
List the things you like to do in your spare time, particularly if they involve teaching, coaching, public service and mentoring others. Many potential employers want to make sure that when you come to a country you are outgoing, independent, and can find your own way. List any accolades or recognition you have received and other achievements, whether it be climbing a famous mountain, completing a marathon, or winning a writing contest.
6. Provide Professional References
While they are not mandatory, they are a good addition to the International Resume. There is no need to list your current employer unless you want them contacted. Try to list at least three references that you know well. Provide their name, title, company/school name, telephone number (include country code) and email address.

Sample Resume That Works! For Aspiring ESL Teachers With No Experience
I’ve been getting a ton of emails from people who wish to work for ‘my company’. Well, just to set the record straight, I do not own a company – specifically an ESL company. I have websites but not a physical school where I hire teachers.
There is no week that I don’t get resumes from random people seeking for ESL teaching jobs. What they don’t understand is that, my blog ‘Timeless English’ is only a place where I write about online jobs, online ESL companies to apply for, introduction scripts, among other ESL-related topics – not an online teaching platform.
This is why I’ve decided to write this article because some of the individuals who contacted me are those who have no ESL teaching experience. Perhaps they didn’t read the entire blog post and just quickly concluded from the title or the thumbnail they see that my site is a ‘real’ school.
I noticed that something was wrong from the resumes that were sent to me by people with ‘no experience’ and ‘new graduates’: the input on their resumes were unnecessarily lengthy and detailed. If I were an employer or a hiring manager, the chance of getting invited for an interview is very slim.
I made a sample resume for everyone who wish to land an ESL teaching job. This can also be helpful to those who are in other industries and don’t know how to begin writing their very first resume.
So how does an effective resume look like?
Below is ONLY a sample resume I created through Canva. The information you see is all just made-up . However, you can copy the same exact words or whatever you want to grab from this example.
As you can see on this sample resume, it’s straightforward and the details you see are basic, relevant or the most important information a hiring manager would ultimately look for. Think of it as saving someone’s time or not annoying the person who’s checking it. Hiring managers or employers are very busy people so they don’t read everything you put on your resume – so at least make it as short as possible while making sure that it still conveys your worth.
Although longer resumes may be needed for specific professions like in education and academia, most employers and hiring experts prefer a one-page resume. Trust me, this resume works! I mean it did work. I experimented with this resume and applied for 5 online ESL companies on the same day. Guess what? I was invited for an interview from all 5 companies I applied for.
You can use the same technique and you have nothing to lose. All you need to do is go to Canva (a website where you can create a beautiful resume or any other stuff you like). I use Canva for free and if you want to use all their features, you can upgrade to Premium. There are unlimited designs that you can choose from. In my case, I chose the minimalist style resume.

How to Present Skills in TEFL Teacher Resume
When presenting your skills in a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) teacher resume, it is important to highlight your qualifications and experience in a clear and concise manner. Here are some tips on how to effectively present your skills:
- Create a skills section: Begin your resume by creating a dedicated section to showcase your TEFL-related skills. This section should be placed near the top of your resume, after your contact information and objective statement.
- Tailor your skills to the job description: Review the job description and identify the key skills and qualifications that the employer is seeking. Make sure to include these skills in your resume, as it will demonstrate that you are a good fit for the position.
- Use bullet points: Use bullet points to list your skills, as it makes it easier for the employer to read and scan through your resume. Each bullet point should highlight a specific skill or qualification that you possess.
- Include both hard and soft skills: Include a mix of both hard and soft skills in your resume. Hard skills are specific, teachable abilities that can be measured, such as knowledge of grammar rules or experience with specific teaching methodologies. Soft skills, on the other hand, are personal attributes that enable you to work effectively with students, such as communication skills, patience, and adaptability.
- Provide examples: Whenever possible, provide specific examples or achievements that demonstrate your skills. For example, if you have experience teaching English to non-native speakers, mention the number of students you have taught or any positive feedback you received from students or colleagues.
- Highlight language proficiency: If you are proficient in any foreign languages, especially those commonly spoken in the region where you are applying for a teaching position, be sure to include this in your skills section. This can be a valuable asset when teaching English as a foreign language.
- Keep it concise: While it is important to showcase your skills, be mindful of keeping your resume concise and to the point. Aim for a maximum of 5-7 bullet points in your skills section, focusing on the most relevant and impressive skills.
Remember, your skills section should be a snapshot of your qualifications and abilities as a TEFL teacher. It should entice the employer to read further into your resume and consider you as a strong candidate for the position.
How to Add Experience in TEFL Teacher Resume
When adding experience to your TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) teacher resume, it’s important to highlight your relevant teaching experience and any additional qualifications or skills that make you a strong candidate for the position. Here are some steps to follow:
- Start with a clear and concise resume objective or summary statement that highlights your teaching experience and goals as a TEFL teacher.
- Create a section specifically for your teaching experience. List your most recent teaching positions first, including the name of the school or organization, the location, and the dates of employment.
- For each teaching position, provide a brief description of your responsibilities and achievements. Focus on your experience teaching English to non-native speakers, including any specific age groups or proficiency levels you have worked with.
- Include any additional relevant experience, such as tutoring, volunteering, or teaching English abroad. Highlight any unique experiences or challenges you faced during these roles.
- If you have limited teaching experience, emphasize any transferable skills that make you a strong candidate for a TEFL teaching position. This could include experience working with diverse populations, strong communication skills, or a background in language acquisition.
- Include any relevant certifications or qualifications you have obtained, such as a TEFL or TESOL certification. List the name of the certification, the issuing organization, and the date of completion.
- If you have participated in any professional development or training related to TEFL teaching, include this information as well. This could include workshops, conferences, or online courses.
- Use action verbs and specific examples to demonstrate your teaching skills and accomplishments. For example, instead of saying “taught English to non-native speakers,” you could say “developed and implemented engaging lesson plans to improve students’ English language proficiency.”
- Tailor your experience section to match the requirements and preferences of the specific TEFL teaching position you are applying for. Highlight any experience or skills that align with the job description.
- Proofread your resume carefully to ensure there are no errors or typos. Consider asking a trusted friend or colleague to review your resume for feedback.
Remember, the goal of your TEFL teacher resume is to showcase your relevant experience and qualifications in a clear and compelling way. By following these steps, you can create a strong resume that highlights your skills as a TEFL teacher.
How to Write Education Section in TEFL Teacher Resume
When writing the education section in a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) teacher resume, it is important to highlight your relevant educational background and qualifications. Here are some tips on how to write this section effectively:
- Start with your highest level of education: Begin by mentioning your highest degree or qualification. Include the degree title, the name of the institution, and the year of completion. For example: Bachelor of Arts in English Language Teaching, XYZ University, 2015.
- Include any additional relevant certifications: If you have obtained any TEFL or TESOL certifications, make sure to include them in this section. Mention the certification name, the issuing institution, and the year of completion. For example: TEFL Certification, International TEFL Academy, 2016.
- Highlight any specialized coursework or training: If you have taken any specialized courses or training related to teaching English as a foreign language, mention them in this section. This could include courses on teaching methodologies, language acquisition, or classroom management.
- Emphasize any relevant research or projects: If you have conducted any research or completed any projects related to TEFL during your education, mention them briefly. This could include research papers, thesis projects, or teaching practicums.
- Mention any relevant academic honors or awards : If you have received any academic honors or awards during your education, such as Dean’s List or scholarships, include them in this section. This can help showcase your dedication and commitment to your studies.
- Keep it concise and relevant: While it is important to provide enough information about your education, make sure to keep the section concise and relevant. Focus on the qualifications and experiences that are most applicable to the TEFL teaching position you are applying for.

- Start with a strong objective statement: Begin your resume with a clear and concise objective statement that highlights your qualifications and goals as a TEFL teacher. This will grab the attention of potential employers and give them a clear idea of what you can bring to the table.
- Highlight your TEFL certification: If you have obtained a TEFL certification, make sure to prominently display it on your resume. This shows that you have received proper training and are qualified to teach English as a foreign language.
- Showcase your teaching experience: Include a section that outlines your teaching experience, including the names of the schools or institutions where you have worked, the grade levels or age groups you have taught, and any notable achievements or successes you have had in the classroom.
- Emphasize your language skills: As a TEFL teacher, it is important to have strong language skills. Highlight any additional languages you speak fluently or have studied extensively, as well as any experience you have had teaching English to non-native speakers.
- Include relevant coursework or professional development : If you have taken any additional coursework or participated in professional development opportunities related to TEFL, be sure to include this information on your resume. This shows that you are committed to continuous learning and improving your teaching skills.
- Showcase your cross-cultural communication skills: TEFL teachers often work with students from diverse cultural backgrounds. Highlight any experiences you have had working or living in different cultures, as well as any cross-cultural communication skills you have developed.
- Include any volunteer or community involvement: If you have volunteered as a TEFL teacher or have been involved in any community outreach programs related to teaching English, be sure to include this information on your resume. This demonstrates your commitment to education and your willingness to give back to the community.
- Use action verbs and quantify your achievements: When describing your teaching experience and accomplishments, use strong action verbs and quantify your achievements whenever possible. For example, instead of saying “taught English to a class of students,” say “instructed a class of 20 students in English language skills, resulting in a 20% improvement in test scores.”
- Proofread and edit carefully: Before submitting your resume, make sure to proofread and edit it carefully for any spelling or grammatical errors. A well-written and error-free resume shows attention to detail and professionalism.
- Tailor your resume to the job: Finally, make sure to tailor your resume to the specific job you are applying for. Research the school or institution and include any relevant information or skills that align with their needs and requirements. This will show that you have taken the time to understand the position and are genuinely interested in working for that particular organization.

How to Write Your TEFL CV
Personal information
It can also be useful to add in your Skype username as many interviews are conducted online.
Add a Photo
Here are 5 tips for choosing the ideal photo:
1 – Avoid passport photos and selfies 2 – Look like the ideal teacher – confident, friendly and professional 3 – Choose a good quality photograph that’s around 600 to 1000 pixels wide 4 – Send the photo as an attachment, or as a small picture on your CV 5 – Use your common sense
Education/Qualifications
If you’re already a qualified teacher holding a PGCE, BEd or equivalent, this should come next, mentioning the date qualified, where you studied and which subject you trained in.
Next, if you have one, should come your degree(s), mentioning university, subject, grade and date awarded.
Lastly, put your school qualifications along with subjects, grade, relevant dates and where you studied for them. Include relevant subjects such as English or a foreign language. If you have significant post-school qualifications or if a long time has passed since your school days, you can miss these out or not mention each individual subject and grade.
You can also mention, if applicable, any ability in a foreign language.
Try to ensure you only mention activities relevant to TEFL – be sure to highlight coaching and mentoring in the work place, organisational duties, giving presentations, or running any staff training. These skills are more important to a TEFL job application than writing in detail about the sort of cars a mechanic works on or being a qualified ice cream scooper.
If you are applying for a business English position, you may wish to be more specific when describing responsibilities in business related jobs, mentioning that you worked in areas such as negotiations, sales or finance.
Voluntary positions can also be added. Mention and emphasise any teaching, training or presentation experience. If you have experience as a teacher or classroom assistant, include the ages you worked with.
Make sure you keep the language very simple in this section. A foreign employer may not have English as a first language and even a native English speaker likely won’t understand complicated industry jargon, so you need to be sure your TEFL CV is clear and concise!
Other Information
Keep this section short! Don’t use this as an excuse to list every certificate you have ever earned. Again, make sure that you write about things that are relevant to teaching English as a foreign language. One or two hobbies, such as playing in a band in the example, can show that you are social and confident in front of others.
What to mention:
- Any training/teaching/leadership roles held outside of work • Travel experience, particularly if you have lived in a foreign country • Computer literacy • First aid certificate • Driving license • A few appropriate hobbies to show personality • You may wish to mention here if you have a particular affinity for aspects of the culture in your chosen country
Checking it over
Remember, you’re applying for a job that requires an exceptional command of English, so any mistake on your CV could cost you the job!
The layout is also very important – it’s key that your CV looks attractive, professional, and the information is presented clearly. It also needs to be under two pages, so if you’re over at this point you need to do some trimming or reformat it to get it under.
When you’re happy with it, save it under an appropriate name so an employer can easily identify your CV from the file name alone – for example, “CV-JaneDoe-EFLTeacher.pdf”.
