Singapore PR Application: Why apply PR in Singapore?

Singapore is one of the safest countries in Southeast Asia. The city-state has a global reputation for its high standard of living, political stability, and strategic infrastructure. People all over Asia are interested in settling in this city country. They know that the opportunities are many and the lifestyle is good. For the hardworking person, it is not difficult to amass a fortune. The country is also secured, there are good educational opportunities for the children.

Because of these reasons, Singapore has become the top choice for ex-pats. Many people come to Singapore on various work-related visas and eventually think of settling here. The first step of this process is obtaining the Permanent Residency (PR) status.

Singapore PR Application: Approval Statistics

The PR success rate was much higher a decade ago. You could go to the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) building on some afternoon, take your papers along, wait for your ticket number to be called, present all copies, and show all certificates. Then, after filing, you would get your results in 3 months. And rejection of PR was unheard of, especially if you had stayed for more than two years in Singapore. However, times have changed. In the years 2008 Singapore ICA approved approximately 80,000 PRs. But government policy changed thereafter, and now ICA approves only 30,000 PRs per year.

In past you could apply with the minimum required documents and got selected. Circumstances are different now. The approval rate of a Singapore PR application is considerably lower compared to that in 2008.

The table below explains the changes in Singapore’s PR statistics in the last 12 years.

It is estimated that only one out of six applications are accepted by ICA now. The reasons for such a low acceptance rate are:

• Singapore’s economy grew, resulting in more foreigners working in Singapore on qualifying visas.
• ICA has made the rules stricter to ensure that only 30000 PR applications are approved each year. That is less than half of 2008 approvals.
• The number of applicants has been increased, while there are limited PR slots available.

Singapore PR Application Eligibility Criteria

You must fulfill any of the below-mentioned Singapore PR requirements to become eligible to apply for Singapore PR.

• You are an S Pass, Employment Pass, EntrePass, or Personalized Employment Pass holders, or are their dependents (Dependent Pass holders)
• You are a foreign investor in Singapore, qualifying for the GIP program
• You are a legally married spouse of a Singapore Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident
• You are an unmarried child (who has not reached the age of 21 years) of a Singapore Citizen or Singapore PR
• You are an aged Parents of a Singapore Citizen
• You are an international student studying in Singapore (must fulfill specific criteria)

PR application Schemes

Eligible candidates from above can submit their PR applications under various PR schemes. However, each scheme entails specific eligibility requirements depending on your profile. There are five different schemes to submit your Singapore Permanent Resident application.

Professional, Technical Personnel, and Skilled Worker (PTS) scheme are for foreigners who are S Pass, Employment Pass, PEP, & EntrePass holders. This scheme also includes their dependents.

Global Investor Program (GIP) scheme is for international investors and seasoned business owners

The sponsored scheme is available for the spouse, aged parents, and children of a Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident

Foreign Students Scheme

Foreign Students scheme is applicable to foreign students who are studying in a qualified Singapore institution. To qualify for this, you must have studied in the local educational institution and must have passed at least one national level examination.

ForArts Scheme

Best Time to Apply PR in Singapore

There is no specific best time to apply for Singapore PR. You can apply whenever you are ready and feel like you want to make Singapore your home. However, one of the required documents in your Singapore PR application is your last six months’ salary slip from your Singapore employer. Hence, you are required to wait at least six months to apply after start working in Singapore. This is the minimum time period to apply for the PR application. However, please note, we do not recommend applying PR so early. Most of the applications filed right after six months of stay in Singapore are rejected by the ICA.

It is recommended to wait for at least one year so that you have an entire year of IRAS (Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore) assessment. Waiting for at least one year will also give you ample time to build your profile. If you happen to be an Indian, we usually recommend at least two years of stay before you file your application.

All NS-liable males traveling to foreign countries for more than three months must obtain an EP (Exit Permit) if they are 13 years or above. Once they finish the service, they must complete ORNS (Operational Ready National Service) every year for up to 40 days. The ORNS training cycle duration keeps going until they turn 40 (50 in the case of army officers). Only the principal applicants who received their PR status under the GIP or PTS schemes are not liable for NS.

Is it possible for my son to renounce his PR status before getting enlisted to serve the NS?

Yes, it is possible. There are cases where people have renounced the PR status in order to avoid national service liability. However, if PR from second-generation do not serve the NS and renounce their status, this will result in unfavorable consequences. For example, they will surely be barred from getting PR status in the future. In many cases, their application for Singapore Employment Pass will also get rejected.

Can I leave my son out of the Singapore PR Application if I do not want him to serve the NS?

It is your decision if you do not want to include your son in your PR application. However, it is recommended not to exclude any member of your family while applying. The Singapore government sees your children as possible future contributors to the nation’s economy and society. The basic rule behind the approval of Singapore PR application is are you ready to sink your roots here in Singapore if given PR status. If you do not include your son in your PR application, then your chances of successful approval will reduce.

Can I apply for a PR if I hold a Singapore work permit?

A work permit holder does not meet the criteria for applying PR in Singapore. Minimum you need S pass to be eligible to apply for PR.

Is it necessary to upgrade to Employment Pass from S Pass before submitting my Singapore PR application?

Upgrading to an Employment Pass from an S Pass is not a necessity, as you are eligible for Singapore PR application as an S Pass holder.

I applied on my own before, but my Singapore PR application got rejected. Why?

Many Singapore PR applicants who apply on their own get rejected. There could be multiple reasons for rejection, like a weak profile, unsatisfactory cover letters, incomplete forms, or documents. However, ICA does not reveal the reasons behind a rejected application. Hence, individuals cannot precisely pinpoint the basis of their rejected application. In general, it is recommended now that you take efforts to build your profile and gather additional documents, before you file your Singapore PR application again.

My friend is just like me in terms of qualifications and work experience. However, his application got approved, but I got rejected. Why?

The two cases may seem similar by glancing at, but there are definitely significant differences between you and your friend’s background. Two completely identical cases do not exist. ICA checks every tiny detail of your case before approving or rejecting your application.

I want to change my job while my Singapore PR application is still getting processed by the ICA. Will this affect my chances of approval?

Switching your job during your Singapore PR application does not usually negatively affect you unless you are frequently switching jobs. Getting a promotion or increment is always a positive change. However, do inform ICA about this change. In addition to that, every time there is a crucial or huge change in your profile after submitting your application, such as adopting a kid or a newborn, you must inform Ica with the relevant documents.

Does changing jobs affect your PR application in Singapore?

Yes you can change jobs while your Singapore PR application is in process. Notifying to ICA is not mandatory. But if you wish you can notify ICA about this change. Does PR application in Singapore have an interview?

Interviews for PR applications are extremely rare. The interviews were a procedure in the old regime (Paper-based applications) where ICA officers could conduct an interview in case there were doubts about the application. However, even then, an interview was not a common practice.

How to fill up the Singapore PR application form?

Currently, the recommended way is to download the form in PDF form. Fill it up and then upload it back in e-PR system. This is the preferred way. After download, ensure to fill up details using a computer (What we mean is don’t print and sign). This keeps form neat and clean.

Can my parents sponsor my Singapore PR application if they are Singapore Citizens/PRs?

Your parents can only sponsor your Singapore PR application if you have not turned 21 years old so far. Anyone above that age must apply oneself based on your merit.

What should be my next step if my employer does not provide Annex A to favor my PR application?

Annex A is not a compulsory document. If your employer is not providing the same in favor of your PR application, then we can prepare a customized declaration letter that you can submit to the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority.

Do I have an edge with my Singapore PR application if I used to study in Singapore?

It entirely depends on where you used to study in Singapore. It will definitely work to your advantage if you have been to a local school- primary, secondary or universities (like SMU, NTU, NUS, NP, SP, RP, TP, and NYP). It will make ICA officials understand that you can integrate successfully with the local community. Applying for Singapore PR has been known to cause headaches, stress, and anxiety. So, here are 24 of our best Singapore PR application tips to lower your stress levels, and help make your application approval-worthy.

These tips are great for first-time applicants who are unfamiliar with the process. They are also good for re-applicants who desire to improve on their last application.

We’ve put together these tips based on our experience of where applicants are often confused, get sidetracked, or go wrong.

This article contains 24 tips arranged in the following sections:

• Submitting your application online

Tip #1: Remember, it’s a competition.

A nd the competition is tough. Firstly, you’re in competition with others for limited vacancies.

About 30,000 new PRs are granted each year (this is the “annual quota” people often refer to). And according to most estimates, about 100,000 applicants are considered for these slots. As expected, the government is strict in their selection to ensure the right people are approved. Standards are high and the authorities are highly selective.

Secondly, the government has the pick of the bunch. The pool of competing applicants is made up of well-qualified candidates. Many come armed with impressive resumes, qualifications, and sought-after skills.

So, prepare to put in the required effort to build a complete and strong application. This will help you to improve your odds of success. If you’re going to apply for Singapore PR, then compete to win.

Tip #2: Focus on what you can control.

De pending on your social circle, everyone seems to have a story about getting their PR or failing to get their PR. And these stories might cause you to worry about things that are NOT under your control.

Here’s the bottom line.

You can’t control the quota and you can’t control the quality or the quantity of your competition. 

Don’t stress over the things you can’t control.

You can only control the quality of your application and the merits that go into your application.

Focus on the preparation of your application. Focus on building your life and career in Singapore. 

Tip #3: Understand the evaluation criteria.

Be aware of the criteria and how you’d be evaluated. This will enable you to have a better gauge of what your chances are, and adjust your expectations accordingly.

Tip #4: Know which PR scheme applies to you

• If you’re a working professional in Singapore with an Employment Pass, S Pass, or Personalised Employment Pass – Apply under the Professionals, Technical Personnel and Skilled Workers scheme (Form 4A)
• If you’re a spouse of a Singapore citizen or Singapore PR – Apply under the sponsor scheme (Form 4SC)
• If you’re studying here on a student pass and have completed national exams such as PSLE, GCE ‘N’/ ‘O’ / ‘A’ levels or the Integrated Programme (IP) – Apply under the student scheme (Form 4B) For the above schemes, you submit your application to the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA). There are other schemes to consider too:

• If you’re a foreign investor, entrepreneur, or family office principal in Singapore with $2.5 million to invest locally – You can apply under the Global Investor Programme through the Economic Development Board. 
• If you’re a f oreign artist with professional experience and exceptional achievements in Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Literary Arts, Design and, or Media – You can apply under the Foreign Artistic Talent Scheme .

Note: The majority of applicants would apply to be Singapore PRs under the first two schemes (Form 4A and Form 4SC). This list of tips would mostly apply to these two groups of people.

Tip #5: Don’t rush the application process.

Take the time and effort to be thorough when preparing your application form and organising your documents. When you complete the application in a hurry, it’s easy to miss out the required details. Details that could also strengthen your application.

We get that paperwork is not the most fun thing in the world. But imagine spending years building your life and career in Singapore, and not taking the time to make sure all your merits are deservingly reflected in your application. Now, wouldn’t that be the true waste of your time?

Tip #6 Get clear on your WHY.

When you have a goal and a strong reason why you want it, then you’ll be more motivated to achieve it. Even in the face of difficulty or setback.

That’s the difference between being interested in a goal versus being committed to a goal.

So, it’s important to understand why you actually want to be a Singapore PR.

Tip #7: Be complete, consistent, and correct.

When you are filling up the details in your application, bear in mind these 3Cs .

Complete – Make sure you provide ALL details required fully. For example, when you are asked for your last ten years of residence – include all the residences that you lived in for 6 months or longer. There shouldn’t be gaps of more than 6 months in your timeline.

Consistent – The details you provide throughout your application should be consistent with the details in the documents you are submitting.

Correct – You have to be as accurate and truthful as possible. You know how sometimes we embellish/stretch the truth in our resumes to impress people? Well, this is NOT your resume, so DON’T do this in your application. Or else, you risk committing an offence .

Tip #8: Use simple language, avoid jargon.

Clarity is important in your application. So it’s always best to use simpler words, so the authorities can understand your application and your merits.

People usually tend to make this mistake when they are filling up their job descriptions.

For example: “Utilised Python to construct a database”.

Firstly, instead of saying “construct” or “utilised”, you could say “build” or “used”. See how simple is better.

Secondly, a Python is a giant snake to most people. Unless you’re into software development or technology, you probably wouldn’t know it’s a programming language. Don’t assume that the authorities are familiar with the technical terms of your job. Avoid jargon.

Tip #9: Pay attention to the “Details of achievements and innovation…” section in Form 4A.

Many people make the mistake of leaving this blank or filling it up with shallow or vague accomplishments that they didn’t think through.

Even when you don’t think you have an accomplishment or an innovation – that’s probably not true. 

Take the time to reflect. 

Be as specific as possible in the accomplishments, innovations, and contributions you’ve made to your company/companies, colleagues, and/or industry.

This is the place to shine. And they’ve given you 3500 characters to do so. So, shine on.

Tip #10 Double-check, triple-check, and maybe check one more time for good measure.

It’s easy to assume you’ve made no major error when you’re completing your form. We tend to do that because most of us have filled multiple forms in our lives, and believe we would be pros by now. But not every form is the same.  

To be on the safe side, check your form till you’re confident. Don’t let an unnecessary mistake hurt your chances of getting approved.

Tip #11 Fill the form ahead of submitting the application online.

You have two options to fill up the form details. You can download the form first and fill it up in your own time. Then once it’s complete, you can think about when you want to submit it on the online application portal.

Alternatively, you can fill up the details on the application portal itself.

We recommend the first option as you have the luxury to take more time to fill up the details and review it.

If you start filling up the details on the application portal itself, the portal gives you a time limit of 7 days to complete the form and also upload your documents. So, to save yourself that pressure just download the form first and complete it outside the portal.

You can download the form on the ePR system (you have to log in with your Singpass to enter). 

Tip #12: Make sure your scanned documents are clear.

This means:

• Scan your original documents in colour for clarity
• Make sure the image is clear and sharp such that words can be read clearly, and logos, emblems, lettermarks, or other graphics on the document can be clearly seen
• Make sure the scan fully captures the entire document

Tip #13: Make sure your documents are in the right format.

• Ea ch file size must be less than 2 MB. So, reduce the file size if necessary and make sure when you do so the image is still clear
• Save the files in pdf or jpeg format. You can only submit your documents in these formats.

Tip #14: Make sure to translate documents that are not in English.

ICA accepts the following translations:

• Translations provided by the embassy of the country that issued the document
• Translations produced by a notary public in Singapore or the country that issued the document
• Privately created translations attested by the embassy of the country that issued the document or notarised by a notary public in Singapore or the country that issued the document

Tip #15: Remember there are additional forms to sign off on.

Sign the forms according to the signature in your current travel document. You can date these documents on the day in which you submit them.

For Form 4A Professionals, Technical Personnel and Skilled Workers scheme:

1. Declaration form to be signed by the main applicant (and spouse, if they are applying too) Form 4A applications)

2. IRAS form to be signed by the main applicant

For Form 4SC Sponsor scheme:

1. Declaration form to be signed by the main applicant

2. A separate declaration form to be signed by the sponsor

3. IRAS for to be signed by the main applicant and sponsor

For Form 4B Student scheme:

1. Declaration form to be signed by the applicant

2. Declaration form to be signed by a parent, if applicant is below 21 years of age

You can download and print these forms after logging in to the e-PR system with your Singpass .

Tip #16: Be mindful of the dates when you seek your company documents.

For applicants applying under the Professionals, Technical Personnel and Skilled Workers (PTS) scheme and the Sponsor scheme, you would have to submit employment-related documents.

You would need to seek your company’s help to provide company and employment details. Take note, these documents must be dated within 1 month from the submission.

For example: if your employer letter is dated on the 25th of May 2020, we recommend you submit your application before the 25th of June 2020.

For PTS scheme (Form 4A), company documents to submit include:

1. Annex A – must be dated within 1 month of submission; a pplies to main applicant only

2. Employer Letter – must be dated within 1 month of submission; applies to main applicant only

3. Salary slips – must be your latest six months of salary slips

For sponsor scheme (Form 4SC), company documents to submit include:

1. Employer Letter – must be dated within 1 month of submission; a pplies to main applicant and sponsor

2. Salary slips – must be your latest six months of salary slips; applies to main applicant and sponsor

Tip #17: Know your strengths.

The first step to improving your application is to identify what your strengths are. Think of the areas in your professional life, social life, or in Singapore’s greater society where you’re making a contribution or an improvement.

It’s okay if you’re not impacting every part of society. If you’re making a difference in your career here, then focus on your strengths in those areas.

If you’re developing your skills continuously and making improvements on yourself personally, that’s also a strength, as it enables you to make more valuable contributions back to society.

Make a list of all your top strengths, and then see where it’s best to present it in your application.

Tip #18: Consider including a cover letter.

A c over letter is not a required document. The reason why some applicants submit one, is because they want to stand out amongst the competition. But the cover letter is not what makes you stand out – the substance of the cover letter is what matters most.

You can use the cover letter to elaborate on your other merits, contributions, achievements, and commitments in Singapore. Expand on the areas where the application form does not allow you to convey fully.

Tip #19: Consider attaching supporting documents to your cover letter.

It’s best if you can back up the key statements made within your cover letter with supporting documents. For example, if you have won professional awards, contributed to a project that benefited society, bought a house here – then show proof of that.

Tip #20: Follow the Goldilocks rule: “Not too much, not too little, but just right.”

When it comes to including details or additional documents to strengthen your application, bear in mind the “Goldilocks rule”. Don’t overdo it with too much information and irrelevant details, or else you’ll dilute the clarity of your application. Your true merits won’t stand out clearly.

Be critical of the details you want to highlight. If an item helps to communicate your commitment, contributions, and potential in Singapore then include them. But if you have multiple items that point to the same merits, then prioritise the most significant ones.

Tip #21: Get a second set of eyes to review.

Preferably someone more unbiased. In most cases, your spouse will not provide an objective perspective. Because they’re emotionally attached to the outcome.

Reach out to someone reliable and trustworthy in your social circle. They’re more likely to provide an objective perspective on your application and give you thoughtful feedback.

Submitting your PR application online

Tip #22: remember to activate your singpass..

Make sure you have your activated Singpass details ready, you need it to log in to the ePR portal to submit your application.

Your Singpass can be activated online , in person at the Singpass counters , or you could also use Singpass Mobile .

Tip #23: Organise all your document files beforehand.

To make the uploading of documents easier, it’s good to organise your documents systematically. We suggest creating a main folder, with subfolders for each category of your documents.

Sometimes, you might mistakenly save duplicate files. Tidy the folders as you’re sorting out your documents – get rid of the duplicates.

Name your files clearly with applicant names and the title of the document.

Come submission time, as you upload the documents required for each field, always check that you uploaded the right document to the right field. If your document files were properly named, formatted, and organised, then this part should be a breeze.

Tip #24: Buffer your time wisely.

Expect to spend several hours submitting your application.

The submission of the application includes completing the application form, and then uploading your documents online. If you have already pre-filled the form (recommended), then your time on the ePR system would be shorter. Expect to take between 1 to 3 hours on the online platform.

If you were to enter the details for the application form on the system itself, this could take several hours longer. Especially, if you don’t have all the information at hand.

It’s best to finish the application in one sitting. You don’t want to keep going back and forth on it, as there is also a time limit of 7 days to complete the process. So clear out your day from any interruptions and buffer in the time necessary to complete it in one sitting.

Your application is the only thing standing in the way of you and your PR status. So make sure you get it done right.

“The job description says it’s optional to submit a cover letter. But do I really need to submit one? I’ve already said so much in my CV – that’s enough, right?”

Trust us, many jobseekers think this way. Unfortunately, they’re wrong.

Not submitting a cover letter is a lost opportunity to differentiate yourself.

Our advice?

Always submit a cover letter.

While your CV or resume talks about what you’ve done previously, it doesn’t mention the value you can continue to bring to your new company .

This is what hiring managers REALLY care about.

Use the cover letter to talk about the value you can bring!

Now let’s dive right in.

How to Write a Great Cover Letter

What is a Cover Letter?

Most people think the job selection process goes like this:

Here’s the problem though – every other job seeker is already doing this.

When Hiring Managers read a CV, they often think: “Yes this person is qualified, but so is everyone else who applied.”

So, how do you STAND OUT?

By talking about what you can do for your new company:

It’s not just a piece of paper.

Your cover letter is your golden ticket of opportunity!

Simply put, a cover letter is a one-page letter addressed directly to the hiring manager.

It grants you a chance to tell recruiters more about yourself on a personal level – something that cannot be done on your resume.

Unlike your resume, which is a formal, factual document, you can afford to be creative with your cover letter format and content.

It should contain 3 essential sections:

• A brief career narrative and overall experience
• A paragraph about your current or most recent role, and one or 2 achievements from this role
• A passage convincing the hiring manager you are the right fit and how you can solve their pain points

How long should a cover letter be? A maximum of 1 page. Strive to hit between 250 and 400 words.

Cover Letter vs Resume vs CV: What’s the Difference?

A cover letter is NOT an opportunity for you to copy and paste your resume or CV.

(We talk about the  difference between a resume and CV here).

Think of the job hunting process as a two-piece puzzle.

Your CV is the first piece, while the Cover Letter is the second piece. Both pieces are essential for you to succeed in your job hunt!

It tells potential employers your career narrative and your competitive advantage .

It  sells you to potential employers: “Yes I’m very experienced and/or have the skills, but here’s a few ideas on how I’m going to apply that to benefit your company. So, hire me!”

Hiring managers receive cold emails from strangers everyday.

When a particular email addresses them personally, it is bound to stand out.

One way to find out who you are writing to would be to search online for their contact information. LinkedIn ‘s great for this!

Some companies or government websites also display information of their heads of departments online. The Singapore Government Directory is a good place to look if you are interested in jobs in the civil service.

Tip: Some job ads on LinkedIn display the names of the hiring managers who put up these ads. Alternatively, use LinkedIn’s Advanced People Search tool to narrow down your digging or call the company directly to ask.

How to Write a Cover Letter

What to include in your cover letter.

We’ll walk you through this step-by-step, starting from the very top.

First, let’s get a fuller picture by looking at an example of a winning cover letter:

Begin with a professional Heading, with your name, email and contact details .

Next, use the Rule of 3 to guide the structure for the body of your letter. Divide your cover letter into 3 paragraphs:

Paragraph 1: Brief career narrative and overall experience

Purpose: Grab the hiring manager’s attention. Make this so good that he can’t help but finish reading it!

Paragraph 2: Explain your current or most recent role, and your achievements in this role

Purpose: Impress the hiring manager with your most recent achievements.

Paragraph 3: Convince Hiring Manager you’re the right fit

Purpose: Integrate how your present role of achievements can solve the new company’s pain points. This is the decision-maker; end your cover letter on an optimistic and promising note!

Finally, end the cover letter with a call-to-action  for the Hiring Manager at the end.

How to Start a Cover Letter

Use a professional and appropriate header.

Include only your name, email and contact details .

• Keep your header short and sweet
• Follow the Rule of 3: Name, email, contact number

Don’t:

• Include your address
• Include your nationality (In fact, your nationality might be disadvantageous if you’re applying for a role outside of your current country!)

Address the Hiring Manager by Name

Examples include:

• Dear Mr. Lee,
• Dear Ms. Lim,
• Dear Mdm. Tan,
• Dear [Hiring Manager’s Name],

The Cover Letter Body

Paragraph 1: brief career narrative and overall experience, write a memorable, personable opening line.

Cut over-formalities. Be personable instead.

If you have an opportunity to present yourself directly to the hiring manager before he even sees your face, what first impression would you want to leave?

Nobody wants to read a long-winded opener consisting of only fluff. Keep it short and sweet.

Of course, don’t be too informal too! The hiring manager is not your friend.

• Be personable
• Demonstrate your enthusiasm for the role
• Be too formal
• Be pretentious
• Extend the first sentence into three or more lines

Hook from Line One

Intrigue the hiring manager from the first line! Show that you’re the perfect candidate:

In this example, the candidate dives right into his areas of expertise, which he takes particular care to align very closely with XYZ Investment Co.’s core businesses .

At the end of the paragraph, he already signals how his experience can add value to XYZ Investment Co.  from day one. Remember, your cover letter should be about what value you can bring to your new company !

ResumeWriter Tip #1: : After writing every sentence, put yourself in the Hiring Manager’s shoes and ask yourself “Does this point show how I can contribute to this new company?” If you cannot answer that from the Hiring Manager’s perspective, remove the sentence.

ResumeWriter Tip #2: Focus on addressing the new company’s pain points. If you know that a company is looking for talent to resolve specific pain points, write your cover letter to resolve these exact pain points and meet these needs. Structure the remainder of your cover letter answering why you are the perfect person to resolve these pain points.

• Present yourself as somebody who others want to work with
• Keep your sentences concise and to the point
• Focus only on yourself! Include how you will add value to your new company too
• Extend your opening sentence into 3 or more lines

Paragraph 2: Elaborate Your Most Recent Achievements

Here is a sample middle paragraph:

Highlight only Relevant Experience

In the example above, he does not explain all of his responsibilities at JP Morgan Chase in detail. He drills down to only the key points .

Likewise, you probably had the opportunity to do a lot at your current job. But not every task will be relevant to your new role.

When writing your cover letter, highlight only experience  and skillsets  that are relevant to your new employer .

ResumeWriter Tip : Identify the first requirement stated on the job description, or points that are similar and mentioned more than once. These are the most important functions for this role. Do weave that point into this paragraph (don’t copy and paste blindly!), and integrate it with your most significant achievements and existing job roles.

• Include relevant experiences that are aligned with the new role
• Forget to embed target keywords into your experience!

Focus on Specific Achievements

In the example, this job applicant drills down to specific achievements.

In fact, take note how specific achievements are intentionally placed on the last line . This placement imprints the key achievement as the last thing on the Hiring Manager’s mind before he moves on to the next paragraph.

ResumeWriter Tip : Put your key achievements on the last line of the middle paragraph for maximum impact. We do not recommend putting it on the first line – save that for an introductory sentence instead!

• Explain and elaborate your Achievements
• Support your Achievements with Metrics
• Forget to align your Achievements with the new company’s pain points
• Speak too much about yourself only!

Use Target Keywords

As with your CV, always massage target keywords  throughout your cover letter. Thoroughly examine the job posting and input relevant keywords into your cover letter. This reflects your acute attention to detail, leaving a very positive impression on the Hiring Manager that you really want the role.

As an example, the relevant target keywords for the candidate’s cover letter have been bolded below.

I admit, I’ve “stolen” this tactic from our Ultimate CV Guide .

But,  nothing gives Hiring Managers more information than numbers .

Numbers add a sense of scale  to your achievements.

For example:

“A 50% increase” is more impactful than “An increase”.

As a general rule of thumb, the more numbers, the better.

“10% increase in sales from $1M to $1.1M” beats   “10% increase in sales”.

But, bigger numbers do not always mean they are better.

“10% increase in sales from $1M to $1.1M in 3 months” beats “100% increase in sales from $50K to $100K in 2 years”.

Finally, numbers must be relevant to the new role!

“100% increase in Instagram followers from 1000 followers to 2000 followers in 3 days” is an impressive metric, but means nothing in a cover letter for a Bank Analyst position.

How to End a Cover Letter

Paragraph 3: convince the hiring manager you’re the right fit, demonstrate your value-add and fit.

Now, having shared your Achievements in the second paragraph, it’s time for you to write the final paragraph of your cover letter.

The final paragraph is your last chance to impress the Hiring Manager.

If you have one last chance, what would you do?

Would you continue telling them how awesome you are?

Most people would.

This is why most people don’t get the job.

You see, while this seems like it might be helpful for hiring managers, for them, it’s actually a red flag !

Remember: It’s not about what you’ve done, but what value you can continue to bring to your new company.

Here is a stellar example of how to end a cover letter.

Notice how the candidate starts this paragraph.

“XYZ Investment Co. is regionally known for its XYZ Fund, which has outperformed the STI benchmark by over 10% every year to date.”

He begins his final paragraph by complimenting his new company . This informs the Hiring Manager two points:

• He has done his background research on our company (Strong sign of interest!)
• He admires our current results (Strong sign of interest!) and is willing to help us grow. (Value-add by him).

ResumeWriter Tip : There is a fine line between complimenting and bootlicking! A genuine compliment out of admiration is authentic, and comes with an action: further suggestions or a desire to improve. Bootlicking is a compliment for compliment’s sake – an immediate turn-off for Hiring Managers. To differentiate between authentic compliments and bootlicking, continue reading below.

past companies anymore ! Signal to the Hiring Manager that your future lies with their company.

In summary, when writing the final paragraph:

• Clearly explain how you can add value to the new company
• Explain how you can fit into the role
• Align your background and relevant skillsets as solutions to the new company’s pain points
• Only talk about yourself
• Mention your existing company (or past companies) at all!

Include a Decisive Call-to-Action

Now, having extended your bait, it would be extremely rude to leave the Hiring Manager hanging when they bite.

To end your cover letter, include a decisive call-to-action for the Hiring Manager.

This is how John does it:

He reiterates his enthusiasm to join this new company, and leaves his contact details for the Hiring Manager to reach out to him.

• Be courteous
• Provide your contact details only at the end (last sentence)
• Show your enthusiasm – end your cover letter with an optimistic note!
• Come off as desperate
• Threaten the Hiring Manager

Use the Right Formal Closing

Finally, close the cover letter professionally.

Singapore PR cover letter format

There is no "format" - and the authorities are good at spotting any attenmpt to "customize" PR applications for better approval chances, and will reject such applications just for that. You are better off just stating the truth in the way you see it.  

Thanks for the response Beppi, We are genuinely want the PR in order to get the citizenship. it's not just like that ok apply for PR as Ur friends around you are applying .sorry to say but that's not the case with us. After staying for a long time and after thinking a lot made our mind to stay back means We want to settle down in Singapore and I am planning to mention same in my cover letter.But just keen to know from the experts,will that be sufficient. so would like to know what shall should I add apart from that.  

You should focus not on what you want (settle in Singapore for the long term), but on what you offer to Singapore, above what an EP holder already does (i.e. niche skill, high salary and tax payments are NOT sufficient, but still a precondition). This could be charity work and other voluntary engagements, cultural integration into the society (i.e. that you have already demonstrated the capability to grow roots here), or (above all) the plan to produce offspring (preferably male, because of NS). Oh you also should mention (if true) that you have no near relatives or dependents (e.g. elderly parents) whom you might want to bring to Singapore at some point - they are seen as unwanted ballast by the Singapore authorities and might cause rejection. Another major point, which you cannot change, is your race (yes, race, not nationality!). The easier your race is perceived to integrate into the Singapore authority, the better. South-East Asian (and other overseas) Chinese are top, Indians at the bottom (interstingly, PRC Chinese are also low).
