Top 22 Sports Analytics Projects & Datasets (Updated for 2024)

Sports analytics is one of the fastest growing job segments in Big Data, having grown by 27% over the last decade, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Sports analysts use various techniques, including statistical and quantitative analysis and predictive forecasting, to make on-the-field and off-the-field decisions. The idea was popularized by Moneyball when the Oakland Athletics used analytics to propel the team to the playoffs.

Sports analytics jobs are highly competitive and require experience in the field. Completing a sports analytics project is one of the best ways to gain recognition and hands-on experience working with sports data and analysis. We’ve compiled some of the best sports analytics projects and datasets to help you practice, including:

  • MLB Mlb Sports Analytics Projects

NBA Sports Analytics Projects

Fantasy sports analytics projects, general sports analytics projects, types of sports analytics projects.

Teams can use sports analytics data to perform a variety of analyses. However, the majority of sports data science projects fall into four categories:

1. Predicting outcomes: These projects use data to forecast player or team performance. These models are used to determine the spreads or the results of games.

2. Competitor valuation: These projects value the impact a player has or the strength of a team.

3. Identifying problem areas: These analytics projects determine areas where players or teams can improve. For example, you could analyze a team’s free throw percentage on wins to see the impact improving free throw percentage would have.

4. Analyzing the game: Finally, these projects assess trends in the game, studying strategies or style of play. For example, this NBA data analytics project examined whether the 2-for-1 play was worth it.

MLB Sports Analytics Projects

Almost all MLB baseball teams employ data scientists and statisticians to predict player performance and gain a competitive edge. Baseball analytics projects typically examine performance or gauge the valuation of a team or player. Here are some MLB analytics projects you can try:

1. Swish Analytics Take-Home: Pitch Predictions

Swish Analytics logo

This sports analytics take-home from Swish Analytics is more of a shorter data challenge. You’re provided with a table of the pitches from the 2011 MLB season and metadata. And your goal is to build a model to predict the probability of a fastball, slider, curveball, etc.

This take-home challenge requires about 3-5 hours to complete, and it’s used as part of the interview process at Swish Analytics. Ultimately, the challenge asks you to build and evaluate a model that could be used in a production environment, including data analysis, feature engineering, and code assembly.

2. Gauging When Players Peak

Baseball analytics project visualization

This guided baseball analytics project is excellent for beginners. Using MATLAB, the project walks you through importing baseball data, calculating batting statistics, creating visualizations, and analyzing player careers.

Thanks to the step-by-step tutorial, this project provides a solid introduction to MLB stats analysis, and you’ll be able to answer the questions: What defines a great MLB hitter? And at what point do great hitters peak in their careers? If you want to re-create the project, use data from Baseball-Reference .

3. HOF Analysis with Random Forests

HOF Analysis with Random Forests visualization

This project delves deep into understanding the factors that may influence a baseball player’s induction into the Hall of Fame. By using Random Forests and local importance scores, it offers a quantitative approach to what has often been a subject of speculation.

To begin, fetch the data from the Lahman package and address any missing values during data collection and cleaning. Following this, integrate multiple datasets, merging batting statistics, fielding statistics, and awards to create a comprehensive view. During modeling, Random Forests will be utilized for classification without splitting the data, allowing you to explore the entirety of it. The local importance scores will be especially useful in identifying the most significant variables for this classification.

In your analysis and interpretation, examine the importance of these variables and contrast them across different classes. A deep dive into outliers will further enhance your understanding, providing nuanced insights into the dataset.

4. Predicting World Series Winners

Predicting World Series Winners visualization

This project comes from the Baseball Data Science blog, which attempts to answer a classic pre-season sports analytics question: Which team is most likely to win it all?

This project uses tree-based models to determine top teams, and after training, it proved reasonably successful. For example, of the Top 5 teams predicted to be World Series winners in 2020, four teams made deep playoff runs, with the No. 2 team (Dodgers, 25%) winning it all.

Another source: See FiveThirtyEight’s MLB ELO ratings and read about how their MLB predictions work.

5. Predicting Pitcher Saves

Predicting Pitcher Saves visualization

This project - which you can see in a step-by-step tutorial here - attempts to forecast which MLB pitcher will have the most saves at the beginning of the season.

Using BeautifulSoup to scrape Baseball-Reference data, the author, Ethan Feldman, starts with a simple regression model, which just used the previous season’s saves as the only feature.

Ultimately, the project does prove difficult as there is significant variability in the number of saves, making this an excellent project for further model testing and development.

7. Predicting NBA Salaries

research project ideas sport

By leveraging data-driven insights to understand NBA player salaries, we can enhance league competitiveness and provide teams with a more accurate valuation of players. This leads to a smarter and more strategic signing.

In this project , we will delve into NBA salaries, focusing on data from the 2020-21 season onwards and particularly on Free Agents (FAs). The aim is to predict future salaries, giving a true reflection of a player’s worth on the court.

To get started, source your data using BRScraper from Basketball Reference. Next, analyze prevailing trends and apply regression models, including Random Forest and Gradient Boosting. To assess the results, lean on metrics like RMSE and R². Finally, delve into SHAP values to truly understand the key factors determining salaries. The end goal is to equip teams with the insights needed for well-informed contractual decisions.

8. NBA Draft Success Analysis

NBA Draft Success Analysis

Drafting NBA players is an inexact science; however, some NBA franchises are more successful than others. For example, the Sacramento Kings have a poor draft record, one reason the franchise has missed the playoffs for 16 consecutive seasons.

This tutorial walks you through determining draft rankings based on player performance, draft position, and other factors.

9. Predicting Double-Doubles

Predicting Double-Doubles visualization

Predicting a double-double based on the number of games played by a player, the number of games played in a season, and other variables is challenging. But this project attempts to predict if one player, Nikola Vučević, will score a double-double in any game.

You can follow this tutorial to build a regression model in R to make such a prediction. Ultimately, the model correctly predicts double-doubles 61% of the time. Enrich the dataset and see if you can improve the model’s accuracy.

10. Simulating NBA Games in Python

Simulating NBA Games

This tutorial from Ken Jee evaluates win probability in games based on team points scored and team points against.

You’ll find a variety of sports analytics datasets on Jee’s site you can use. One option: This straightforward model uses only the team’s historical average. That’s why it’s an excellent project for beginners.

If you wanted to take this project further, you could incorporate historical player data to enrich the model.

Sports Research Project Ideas From Mentors at Polygence

Here are some examples of project ideas from our mentors at Polygence:

Impact of Basketball Angle on Shooting Percentage : This project involves analyzing the effect that the angle between which a basketball player receives a pass from a teammate and the basket has on their chance of making a shot. I hypothesize that as the angle decreases, the chance of making the shot increases. This project could help basketball teams strategize their offensive schemes to increase their shooting efficiency.

Project Idea from: Nick R at Syracuse University

Evolving Landscape of Sports Audience and Viewership : Technology has brought on a swift change in the way fans consume sports. This project will uncover how many people consume sports (by sport) and how that has changed in recent years due to technology (and COVID). What are the business outcomes of such changes and where are the possible growth opportunities for firms/brands to invest.

Project idea from Cameron K at Northwestern University

Why ____ Will be the Next Successful Sports City : After the run of dominance of Boston in the first 20 years of the 2000's winning 12 combined championships among the four teams, which city is next primed to be a powerhouse for the next 20 years? Things to take a look at might include young talent on teams, new hires in front offices, economic development in cities, or maybe something else.

Project idea from Joseph S at Syracuse University

Finding Value in MLB Free Agency : Every offseason there are hundreds of professional baseball players who become free agents and can be signed by any team. This project involves determining which players might be a good "value" by deciding which statistics are most important to helping a team win relative to how players are generally paid. After deciding which stats are the most important, a ranked list of "value" can be produced based on expected salaries.

Project idea from Dante L at Washington State

These ten project ideas are just the tip of the iceberg, offering you the chance to combine your passion for sports with the excitement of scientific inquiry. Through Polygence , high schoolers have the unique opportunity to turn these ideas into reality, fostering a love for learning and opening doors to future careers in the dynamic world of sports and sports science.

How to do Research on Sports

Academic Writing Service

Today, the sports business is a billion-dollar industry and an integral part of American and world culture. Interest in sports has hardly waned from the most watched Super Bowls, to the greatest World Series, to record-breaking accomplishments of sports stars. Yet there is a dark side; widespread controversies about steroid use, long-term contracts ruining the sport, and franchises relocating to other cities when the revenues dry up.

Whether you love sports, have a difficult research question or a desire to learn more about a particular sport, athlete, or controversial issue, many sources provide information to suit your needs for research paper writing. Among them are almanacs and general reference works, abstract and citation indexes, popular periodicals and journals, and countless print and electronic sources.

The following sources describe the selected references in the above categories to get you started.

Selected Subject Headings

Listed below is a sample of a few broad Library of Congress subject headings—made up of one word or more representing concepts under which all library holdings are divided and subdivided by subject—which you can search under and use as subject terms as well when searching online library catalogs for preliminary and/or additional research, such as books, audio and video recordings, and other references, related to your research paper topic. When researching materials on your topic, subject heading searching may be more productive than searching using simple keywords. However, keyword searching when using the right search method (Boolean, etc.) and combination of words can be equally effective in finding materials more closely relevant to the topic of your research paper.

Suggested Research Topics for Sports

  • Coaching (athletics)
  • College Sports
  • Doping in Sports
  • Mass Media and Sports
  • Outdoor Life
  • Physical Education and Training
  • Professional Sports
  • Recreation Sport
  • Sporting Goods
  • Sports for Women
  • Sports—Administration/Management
  • Sports—History
  • Sports—Medicine
  • Sports—Psychology
  • Television Broadcasting of Sports
  • Violence in Sports

Selected Keyword Search Strategies and Guides

sports research guide 2

If your topic is “steroid use in professional sports,” for example, enter “steroids” and “professional sports” with “and” on the same line to locate sources directly compatible with the primary focus of your research paper. To find research on more specific aspects of your topic, from your list of keywords that you developed alternate with one new keyword at a time with “and” in between (for example, “steroids and athletes and professional sports,” “steroids and ban and professional sports,” “steroids and performance and professional sports,” “steroids and suspensions and professional sports,” etc.).

For additional help with keyword searching, navigation or user guides for online indexes and databases by many leading providers—including Cambridge Scientific Abstracts, EBSCO, H.W. Wilson, OCLC, Ovid Technologies, ProQuest, and Thomson Gale—are posted with direct links on library Web sites to guides providing specific instruction to using whichever database you want to search. They provide additional guidance on how to customize and maximize your searching, including advanced searching techniques and grouping of words and phrases using the Boolean search method—of your topic, of bibliographic records, and of full-text articles, and other documents related to the subject of your research paper. Many libraries, under the “Help” sections of their Web sites, post their own tutorials on subject and keyword searching, which you can also consult.

Selected Source and Subject Guides

As part of your preliminary research to find appropriate resources for your research paper, information source and research guides are available at most public and academic libraries and are keyword searchable through your library’s online catalog (to search and locate guides, enter your “subject” followed by these keywords one search at a time: “information sources,” “reference sources,” and “research guide”). Printed guides available for this subject area include

Information Sources in Sport and Leisure , edited by Michele Shoebridge, 345 pages (London; New York: Bowker-Saur, 1992)

Sport, Leisure, and Tourism Information Sources: A Guide for Researchers , edited by Martin Scarrott, 267 pages (Oxford and Boston: Butterworth Heinemann, 1999)

Sports, Exercise, and Fitness: A Guide to Reference and Information Sources , by Mary Beth Allen, 287 pages (Westport, Conn.: Libraries Unlimited, 2005)

Sports History: A Guide to Scholarship, the Literature and Sources of Information , by Richard William Cox (London: Frank Cass, 2002)

Women in Sport: A Guide to Information Sources , by Mary L. Remley, 139 pages (Detroit, Mich.: Gale Research Co., 1980)

In addition to these sources of research, most college and university libraries offer online subject guides arranged by subject on the library’s Web page; others also list searchable course-related “LibGuides” by subject. Each guide lists more recommended published and Web sources—including books and references, journal, newspaper and magazines indexes, full-text article databases, Web sites, and even research tutorials—you can access to expand your research on more specific issues and relevant to your research paper subject.

Research Project Ideas

Looking for inspiration? Here are a few ideas I have for your research project in sport science - a school science project, honors or PhD project? I would love to know if you did follow up with any of these ideas.

Fitness Quotient

I have created a questionnaire to measure fitness , though it has not been scientifically validated. With this test, you could determine someone's fitness without doing any physical testing, relying solely on replies to a simple questionnaire that could be completed in minutes. The format needs a bit of work, but it could form the basis of a research project, using actual fitness testing to validate such a questionnaire.

RPE Hand Scale

I have created a 5-point rating of perceived exertion scale , using only hand signals. For this RPE Scale, the subject just holds up the fingers of their hand to indicate the intensity level - from 1 to 5. The advantages of this scale over the popular Borg RPE scales are that it is simple, non-verbal and based on the 5-point Likert scale. This scale has not been scientifically tested and validated, so there is an opportunity for someone to conduct research on this topic.

Beep Testing for the Deaf

I am unaware of any fitness tests designed specifically for the deaf. Although deaf people can perform many fitness tests without modification, a very common test of aerobic fitness, the beep test, relies on audio signals so is not easy for deaf people to take part. Once you create the modified testing equipment, it will need to be validated. You will need access to some deaf athletes, there is a potential partner as discussed in a Topend Sports newsletter. See more Beep Test Research Ideas .

Effect of Environmental Conditions on Fitness Testing Results

When living in the tropical north of Australia I conducted preliminary research on the effect of the hot climate on field fitness testing results . The results from fitness testing performed outdoors may be detrimentally affected by the environmental conditions, reducing the reliability and validity of the tests, and could make it difficult to compare to test results performed in other conditions and also to testing performed indoors. The effect would be expected to differ between types of tests.

Placebo effect and exercise

Could you be convinced that "fake" training is the real thing, and have performance benefits? I don't know how you can convince a subject that they are training when they are not, but you could try treatments that have no physical benefits but the athletes do believe that they have, and consequently improve in physical measures.

Encouragement Effect

How much benefit can you get by simple encouragement? Can you run for longer and lift more weight with some positive encouragement? What about the effect of music, used to motivate before exercise or during exercise to improve focus and calmness.

Sit and Reach Test Analysis

The sit and reach flexibility test — what does it actually measure? Design research to analyze the biomechanical factors of the test to see where the bending and stretching occur. This study could include a training element where different factors of the sit and reach test are specifically trained (e.g. stretching different muscle groups), then retest to see if the sit and reach test results change too.

New Fitness Tests

The details of a few new fitness tests have been provided to Topend Sports. As they are new, they have not undergone scientific study.

Do you have an idea for a research project, but do not have the resources to conduct it? You can send me your idea to have it published here, and hopefully, someone will think it is a worthwhile project. You could even be a partner in the research and get the credit for the idea.

Stay away from the typical, overdone science fair cliches. Instead, create something that combines sports and science for your science fair project.

Ideas to Get You Started

  • How does the material from which a baseball bat is made affect performance? How does a wood bat compare with an aluminum bat?
  • Does altitude affect the height of a ball bounce (for example, a golf ball)? If an effect is seen, can you attribute it to gravity or atmospheric pressure?
  • Examine the effect of energy bars on performance. Pick a sport. Is there a difference in performance if you use a protein-boosting energy bar versus a carbohydrate-boosting energy bar?
  • What is the effect of using a corked baseball bat compared to a normal one?
  • Does drinking an energy drink (or sports drink) affect reaction time? memory?
  • Are there really streaks in baseball? Or is it simply chance?
  • Compare energy drinks based on cost, taste, short-term effect, and long-term effect.
  • Which sports drink contains the most electrolytes?
  • How is a ball's diameter related to the time it takes to fall?
  • Does the length of a golf club affect the distance you can hit the ball?
  • Does a swim cap really reduce a swimmer's drag and increase speed?
  • How does exercise affect heart rate? This project is especially good if you can track data over a longer time frame.
  • Does exercise affect reaction time?
  • Does regular exercise affect memory?
  • At what slope angle is the mechanical advantage of a bicycle lost, as compared to running?
  • Compare different brands of balls for a sport (like baseball or golf) for cost versus performance.
  • Do helmets really protect against a crash? (Perform this test with a stimulant like a watermelon.)
  • What is the best air pressure for a soccer ball?
  • How does temperature affect the accuracy of a paintball shot?
  • Does altitude, temperature, or humidity have an effect on the number of home runs hit at a baseball diamond?
  • Does the presence or absence of a net affect free throw accuracy?
  • Measure the effect on peripheral vision from wearing different types of corrective eyewear (such as glasses). Does an athlete experience a noticeable improvement when peripheral vision is increased?
  • Is there an effect if you fill an inflatable ball with a different gas than air (such as nitrogen or helium)? You can measure the height of a bounce, weight, and effect on passing, as well as how long it stays inflated.

Tips for Choosing a Project

  • If you are an athlete or trainer, pick the sport you know best. Can you identify any problems to be examined? A good science fair project answers a question or solves a problem.
  • When you have an idea, consider how to design an experiment around it. You need data. Numerical data (numbers and measurements) are better than qualitative data (greater/lesser, better/worse), so design an experiment that gives you data you can graph and analyze.

100+ Youth Sports Research Paper Topics to Write About

sports research paper topics

I know many sad stories  of college students who write about non-interesting sports research topics such as the usefulness of teamwork or the history of football. Here in Homework Lab, I’ve got 21 students from the U.S. who came to us with D and even F marks for sports research paper topics, banned as hackneyed  by their professors. For my students, I used to create a list of 10-20 topics to select when they started the essay. Today, I publish my collection. These are 100 best  research ideas, based on academic articles and research, which will surely work for you. Feel free to check them below! 👇

Update 24 Oct:  I’ve wiped out some old topics and introduced fresh ones. The list is ready for 2019 season!

Sports Research Examples by Homework Lab Geeks

Why reinvent the wheel if you can take a look at the wheels made by your peers? Before you start browsing currently unused and unique topics, it is worth checking essays that have already passed college and high school grading with success 📝. You can use them as a source of inspiration and fresh ideas for your own writing!

  • “Miller Park Baseball Stadium” essay example  is devoted to the unusual theme: infrastructure for sports. It considers even such intricate factors as weather, the safety of workers and the behavior of sports fans — it is a good sample for sports management research.
  • “Nike’s Marketing Communication Mix”  paper example explores how Nike penetrated the market by helping athletes to perform better, and what solutions were required. Apparel matters for success, and sometimes even more than you think.
  • “Critical Analysis of Sidney Crosby by Kristi Allain” exemplifies how sports research can be used to analyze identities of athletes — and how venerable heroes affect national culture. Sports psychology and culture students would like to check it!
  • “Nutrition and Fitness” Essay  reminds of usually forgotten topic — food, supplements and nutrition of athletes are regulated by many organizations! The paper points out that restrictions are needed to save human lives in some situations.
  • “Fitness and Wellness Essay” example — a great source of physical assessment information and tips to be used by nursing, rehabilitation and sports safety students.
  • “Fraud Examination: 2015 FIFA Corruption” paper  refers to the topic of fairness in sports competition research — and how virtues of equality are violated by officials for their profits. Must-read for those who look for interesting sports research topics.
  • “The Value of Physical Exercise and P.E. Classes at School”  provides empirical evidence on why sports education is being developed in the U.S — and why there are still problems (spoiler: because of parents and Maths).
  • “The Construction of National Identity in British Media Coverage of Sport” is an essay example about the impact of media on how competitive sports are being developed, and on the society in general.

💊 research topics on sports injuries.

In healthcare studies, students are required to focus on sports injuries and avoiding them in athletic practice. In my experience, the best option is to write about injury prevention and post-injury care, and  never on emergency help.  Unless you are a nursing student, you are not expected to be an expert in medical emergency services. On the sports field, every action after an injury may have dramatic consequences for athlete health — and your tutor is not likely to be forgiving to your mistakes.

Following topics are entirely predictable — you will find enough sources to write about, and you are likely to enjoy your research. After an update, I also added some  safe  emergency topics. During 3 years of my work as a Geek, they did not cause any problems.

  • Brain concussion of athletes.  Should be athletes with suspicion on concussion removed from the field?
  • Treating acute and chronic overstrains in athletes . What is better: massage, injections or ointments?
  • Athletic varicose disease. Causes of development, signs, methods of prevention.
  • Anti-doping control in sports : What is the most performance-affecting drug in the world?
  • Athletic pharmacology.  What is the best medication to cure injuries and facilitate post-traumatic recovery?
  • Overtraining. What are its symptoms, how it affects competition and how to avoid it?
  • Sudden death in sports.  What impacts on-field mortality of athletes and what sports organizations do to mitigate the issue?
  • Overwork & fatigue in sports.  How can trainers help athletes to work more productively and avoid exhaustion?
  • Acute pathological athletic conditions . What severe diseases can develop due to sports and training, and how they can be avoided without medication?
  • Recovery after the illness.  How athletes turn back on track after catching flue, cold or other diseases?
  • Do athletes live shorter than ordinary people?  What impacts the life expectancy of people of sports?
  • Thermal and solar strikes during sports competition.
  • Dislocation in sports.  Is it an unavoidable plague of active sports?
  • Fear of injury.  Do athletes who were traumatized once feel anxiety during the play?
  • Masculinity and injuries.  Some sports research topics suggest that male athletes incur much more traumas and wounds than their female peers. Is that true?
  • Breast traumas.  What threats await for female athletes in competitive and active sports?

I received the feedback that these ideas had been useful for nursing and healthcare students too — so, feel free to use!

📊 Research Paper Topics On Sports Management

Management topics on sports revolve around three things: organizing people, providing athletes with everything they need, and connecting sports organization and stakeholders to enable competition. Don’t think that it’s too easy, though — management tutors like graphs, statistics, and science. They are also not likely to tolerate some extreme ideas like maximization of sports event funding at the cost of fans’ safety and sports dignity. Below, you will find topics where you teacher  just cannot  force you to sweat😓.

  • Management of sports club.  What is needed to create a sports hub for professional athletes and the community?
  • How to save costs on sports.  Which facilities and services for athletes are too expensive, and how can savvy managers save funds?
  • Where to find money for sports events?  Sources of funding, sponsors, charity, donations, and issues of ticket selling.
  • Community awareness of sports.  How to attract locals to your sports organization and why do you need it?
  • Women in sports.  Is there any ceiling that prevents the career development of women in sports industries?
  • Efficiency management in a sports organization.  How can a non-athlete manager know that everything goes right in a sports club?
  • Relationships with philanthropists in sports.  What drives sponsors to fund sports, and what can be done to retain and attract them?
  • Cost-benefit analysis of the sports industry.  Can sports organization be a profitable and sustainable business?
  • Global warming and sports  (I know that it is unexpected). Does environmental change affect sports and what shifts can we expect in the future?
  • Sports accessibility.  What are difficulties of providing access to physical activities for seniors, children, and people with disabilities, and how to overcome them?
  • Ecology of water sports.  What to do with wastewater from pools?
  • HR and recruiting in sports.  How to find good athletes for your team if you don’t have $1,000,000?

Do you want to learn an advanced research method to apply statistics to your research? Afraid of maths and hate calculations?

We created a human language guide on chi-square test  that  everyone  can use. Tested on 8th-graders — no math is needed, online tools provided! Term papers nailed.

     ⚛ Sports Science Research Topics

If your major is not sports or you are pursuing a degree in sports education, then you are likely to be assigned to a science research paper. The primary point of such topics is to find the connection between sports and some field of study — be it psychology, economics or chemistry. I added some ideas for the 2018-2019 academic year that are easy to research.

  • Connections between sports and the economy.  Are nations that invest in sports are more successful that sports-hating countries?
  • Why do some countries refuse to host the Olympics?  Can major international events become a burden for the national economy?
  • January Club in sports.  Why children who born in January become more successful in sports than kids born in other months? (It’s a true fact, besides, and called a Relative Age Effect ).
  • Can athletic success be inherited?  Genetics and heredity in sports.
  • Sports regulation and performance of athletes.
  • What hormones are the most important for athletes?  Biochemistry of winning sports competition.
  • Athletic nutrition.  What do top athletes eat to remain strong, fast and steady?
  • What traits of character are needed for an athlete to win?  Sports psychology research has a lot of papers on the topic, so you’ll have a good time writing about it.
  • Empathy in sports . Is the ability to understand other people necessary for athletic training?
  • Sports for an animal. 🐶  Can a dog athlete earn more than a human sports practitioner?

Did you expect such topics, hah? They are really scientific, still not boring. For more science stuff, check sociology topics below, in the 8th section of our post. 👇

No Wishes, Let’s Nail My Essay

🎓 sports schools topics for college students.

I know that in sports school, the primary objective of any sports writing assignment is to show your professional abilities. What are they?      🏈 Football Research Topics

You may already know that right now, lawsuits on head injuries of college students  may make ban this type of sports from the public education. It’s an excellent topic to write if you are focused on injuries and health. Honestly, I believe that football topics present a lot of place for creativity — this sport has evolved beyond a simple play and now presents a complex cultural construct.

  • Why is rugby called football?  It’s not a big secret that outside the US, “football” means “soccer.” Such words shift has an exciting history.
  • How are champions selected?  Why date of birth matter for junior football leagues? (Remeber about  Relative Age Effect )
  • Evolution of football today.  Which rules are about to change in years coming?
  • Football tactics. What do rugby players have in common with Ancient Rome infantry? ⚔

💪 Athletic Training Research Topics + Sports Psychology

I know that 4 of 5 of psychology students are assigned with essays and research papers on training. It is not surprising — training is a complex psychological process of overcoming physical and mental barriers  to improve body performance. Moreover, mental strength is as important as physical power for athletic competition. Scientists proved that the nervous system has a bigger impact on functional strength than muscle mass and training.

My topics already consider the latest research findings.  Don’t worry: all these questions exist in academia, however fantastic they may sound.

  • What determines strength: a neural system or muscle mass?
  • Do strict sports rules generate stress? Impact of game rules on athletic training.
  • “Second breath”: myth of truth?  What determines the stamina of an athlete and how to train it?
  • Team chants:  do they help to play better?  Techniques and secrets of teambuilding in team sports.
  • Willpower and sports.  Do athletes really have a swift and robust character?
  • “Adrenaline junkies” in sports.  Is that true that adrenaline is an addictive drug and many athletes practice risky sports just to get their dope?
  • Multitasking in sports as a barrier to performance  Why team captains usually strike fewer goals than ordinary team members?
  • Hygiene in sports. Why not taking a shower is dangerous for health?
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and sports.  Do people with ADHD are prone to becoming athletes?
  • Sports trophies and self-esteem.  Does winning cups and medals help teenagers to prove their worthiness to parents and peers?

     👨‍👩‍👧‍👧  Sports Sociology Research Topics

Sports research paper topics of sociology focus on two things: why do people play sports, and what sports make for society. I composed the list below to allow you to explore these questions in depth and width. Sports are the social activity by the very definition — even when they are not played in the team, they are spectated by other people. Therefore, every sociology idea from the list below will work, regardless of your major.

  • Sports behavior in kids.  Do sports and training present a part in human instincts.
  • Sports as a tribal behavior.  Do Indigenous Australians, Native Americans or Native Africans play their unique sports?
  • Sports as a mental health treatment.  Can psychological diseases be cured with training and sports?
  • Sports and school performance.  Do young athletes really study worse than nerds? Why?
  • Why is physical education mandatory in schools?  Besides, did you know that in some countries, physical education is mandatory for college students too, even with the major in math?
  • Sexual activity and sports.  Are athletes more sexually active than their non-training peers? What causes such an effect?
  • Transgender women: should they compete against males or females?  It’s a difficult but interesting topic to research.
  • Gender and sports.  Do representatives of different genders perceive sports differently?
  • Athletes as role models. Is an idol from the sports industry better for child’s development than a pop star?
  • Are sports a reasonable career?  How athletes as professionals compare to other jobs in the labor market of your country?
  • Youth sports and juvenile delinquency.  Is that true that playing sports and training at school reduces kid’s chances to commit crimes and get into jail?

     🤑 Sports Marketing Research Topics

Sports marketing ≠ sports advertising, my dear students. Marketing is far, far more complex — professionals research the whole society to find  how to transform and adapt sports to maximize popularity and revenue. Online event streams, e-sports, viral campaigns with athletes: these are only a few attempts made to convert sports as an industry. So, instead of writing about generic “How to advertise sports,” let me show you some advanced but easy topics to write about.

  • International tickets selling.  How to sell tickets to people who don’t even speak English?
  • Viral sports promotion.  What are the most successful PR cases of sports marketing in the US?
  • How to promote your sports even for free and gain revenue?
  • Tickets are not the primary source of revenue in sports.  How do event hosts and sports associations earn billions on food, ads, and merchandise?
  • Marketing budgets for Olympics.  What are the most expensive items in the purchase list for an international event?
  • Sports celebrities and food advertising.  Is it ethical for star athletes to advertise McDonald’s?
  • Marketing Eagles vs. Marketing Dragons.  What are the differences between sports markets in the US and China?
  • Social media and sports motivation.  Can sports pictures and videos on Instagram help to attract people to sports and training?
  • How to attract the local community to your gym?  Sports and fitness as a business.
  • Personal data and sports.  How can marketers use your sports behavior data to advertise and sell stuff to you?
  • Banned sports ads.  What advertisements about sports  were  removed from screens and paper by courts and public volunteers? Why?

Are you ready for some expert stuff? I’ve also disclosed our internal topic checklist from Homework Lab. Check it below if you want to select your own idea and don’t get stuck without sources! 👇

All Right, Geek, Show Me Your Secrets

criteria for selecting a good sports research paper topic.

There is a Golden Essay Idea Checklist that is used by our Geeks in their works — it helps to avoid writing crises, lack of information and low grades!

  • Google your idea for controversy!  Anecdotal case: “sports rehab” topic was returned to a student for a second resit. Tutors required to write about treating injuries with sports — and the submitted paper was about the rehabilitation of people with a drug addiction! Google your idea to avoid such anecdotes.
  • Check availability of sources!  Some fresh topics as so fresh so you will not find any articles or books to use for citation 😋. This problem is very critical for athletic training research topics!
  • Mind Ethics!  Students are often directed by tutors to resit on the paper — in lucky cases! — for such proposals as testing substances on athletes. Sports psychology topics should also consider human dignity, research ethics and morals, which are required by every tutor in the US, the UK, and Australia!
  • Use a human-centered approach!  A research design that focuses on the safety of people and their wellbeing is a must for students in 2018. Safety of athletes from injuries in high-performance competitions is more desired topic than discussing the opportunities to push the human organism to its limits.

Now, you are ready to proceed! All the topics in this article have passed the Golden Checklist and are safe to use. However, if you alter them, it will be necessary to re-check everything. Here is a table with reminders for you

3 Sources To Choose a Right Topic & Start Researching

No topic suits you 100%, and you don’t feel satisfied? Or, you want to find more information to start off your paper? Here are three main websites to keep on the sharp edge of sports research. Maybe, even closer to the edge than your tutor! I used them to compose this list.

1. BBC Sports

BBC is famous worldwide, and the section “ Sports ” covers all the recent sports events in the world. Visiting this web page may help you to find the urgent topic or the topic you have a particular interest in. It’s a good place to find trendy discussions and hot academic findings, as well as industry news.

A billboard advertising the Vegas Golden Knights Hockey team looms over the Allegiant Stadium construction site.

In the past year, Las Vegas has seen the Las Vegas Aces claim a second consecutive WNBA title, the Vegas Golden Knights win the Stanley Cup, a Super Bowl at Allegiant Stadium, and the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix race down the Strip. Professional athletics are having a moment in the Entertainment Capital of the World, and UNLV’s Oral History Research Center wants to capture the story of how we got here.

Under the direction of Claytee White and project manager Stefani Evans, the OHRC is launching a new two-year project, Game On! The Oral History of Las Vegas Sports .

“The national spotlight is shining on Las Vegas, but it’s important to remember that sports didn’t start here with the construction of Allegiant Stadium,” said White, who is the founding director of the OHRC, which is part of Special Collections & Archives in the University Libraries. “We have a long history of athletes and sports teams, professional, college, high school, amateur and everything in between. This is the perfect time to document these stories for future generations.”

Game On! will collect oral histories from the people who shaped sports in Las Vegas, from the earliest teams and dreamers to the champion teams and the proliferation of professional sports teams in the city.

“Our goal is to collect around 140 oral histories over the course of the project,” said Sarah Quigley, director of UNLV Special Collections & Archives. “These first-hand accounts will enhance our extensive oral history collection, which includes nearly 5,000 interviews with individuals who have called Las Vegas and Southern Nevada home.”

The center plans to conduct interviews covering hockey, football, baseball, softball, mixed martial arts, motorsports, tennis, basketball, rugby, soccer, lacrosse, swimming, poker, boxing, rodeo, golf, running, rodeo, esports, and more.

“The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, the American Gladiators, American Ninja Warrior, and so many more sports entertainment franchises have competed in Las Vegas,” said Evans. “Collectively they are part of our city’s history and this project will ensure these stories that show off the different parts of our culture are preserved in Special Collections & Archives.”

Game On! oral histories will be transcribed, digitized and made available to researchers and interested parties around the world through the UNLV Special Collections & Archives Portal. Any additional donated documents, manuscript collections, or photographs will also be made available to the public through Special Collections and Archives in Lied Library.

The project is launching with an initial $30,000 gift from a private donor. The Center is seeking additional funding to support the project over the next two years. Gifts to the project will be used to hire additional staff to support logistics and editing, transcribe and print copies of the oral histories, and process and make the interviews available and findable online.

If you’re interested in making a tax deductible donation to support the Game On! project, visit the UNLV Foundation website and direct your gift to the Oral History Research Center. If you have any questions about making a donation, you can also contact Michael Beiler, Director of Development for UNLV Libraries, at [email protected] or 702-895-2239.

White and Evans have begun scheduling interviews, but are seeking suggestions on individuals to interview. Do you know someone whose story should be included in the project? Nominate them using our online form or contact the Oral History Research Center at 702-895-2222.

If you’re interested in learning more about the project, or follow updates on the work, visit the Game On! webpage .

Advice for the Unmotivated

  • Robin Abrahams
  • Boris Groysberg

How to reignite your enthusiasm for work

Employee disengagement is rampant in the workplace. We’ve all experienced it as customers encountering unhelpful retail clerks and as colleagues dealing with apathetic teammates. But what happens when you yourself feel dead at work?

This article describes what you as an individual can do to sustain your motivation or recover it, even in the most stultifying of jobs. After synthesizing research on this challenge and experimenting with various strategies, the authors have developed a process for recharging yourself called DEAR.

The first step is to detach and objectively analyze your situation so that you can make wise choices about it, instead of reacting in a fight-or-flight way. At day’s end, review what went well at your job and then mentally disconnect from it to give yourself a break. Meditation and exercise can help you do that and will improve your mood and cognitive function. Next, show empathy. Practice self-care, make friends, recognize the accomplishments of others, seek their views, and help them. Research shows that this combats burnout. Third, take action: achieve small wins, invest in rewarding outside activities, redefine your responsibilities, and turn uninteresting tasks into games. Ask yourself how someone you admire would behave in your situation, and dress in a way that projects confidence. Last, reframe your thinking: Focus on the informal roles you enjoy at work, your job’s higher-order purpose, and how others benefit from your work. All these techniques will improve your mental health and increase the energy you bring to your job—even if it is not what you’d like it to be.

In virtually everyone’s career, there comes a time when motivation and interest vanish. The usual tasks feel tedious. It’s hard to muster the energy for new projects. Though we go through the motions of being good employees or managers, we’re not really “there.” We become ghosts or zombies: the working dead.

Hidden serial numbers for guns, dietary supplements among CC Science Symposium topics

research project ideas sport

Clandestine serial numbers, cloning an enzyme for a potential future dietary supplement and the health of rural versus urban streams for aquatic invertebrates were among topics covered Wednesday at the 10th annual Columbia College Science Symposium.

Students filled Brouder Science Center with posters representing their research, explaining it to the dozens of visitors who approached.

More than 50 student research projects were represented.

Nicholas Pouk, a senior in forensic science and biology from St. Peters, was receiving a lot of attention for his project, "Using carbon dot nanocomposites towards a clandestine serial number stamping method."

Carbon dots are a biological marker that can be melted into a type of plastic and applied to items to be marked, Pouk explained.

He envisions it being used to serial numbers on firearms that aren't visible without using a specific wavelength of ultraviolet light.

Law enforcement can be supplied with the location on the firearm of the serial number and the wavelength needed to view it, he said.

It can be used as an anti-counterfeit method for bank notes, he said.

"It's also cheap and simple," Pouk said, noting another benefit.

He has a job lined up after graduation as a necropsy technician with Alta Sciences in Columbia.

Kristin Kelly, A Columbia senior in biology did her research on cloning malate dehygrogenase.

"It's an important enzyme," Kelly said.

The protein that results could be used as a dietary supplement, she said.

"It's kind of like a vitamin," she said.

She's' enrolled in the biomedical sciences master's degree program at the University of Missouri, where she will study the immune system's effects on cardiac performance after a heart attack.

Her research won the symposium's Top Research Proposal award.

Nick Grabner, an Asland senior in biology, won the Department of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computer Science Award. He also was the keynote speaker at the symposium.

His researched looked at the health of invertebrates and water quality in urban and rural streams.

The urban stream is Flat Branch Creek in downtown Columbia and the rural stream is Turkey Creek, between Columbia and Ashland, one of the creeks in the Three Creeks Conservation Area .

Water quality was better in Turkey Creek, based on measures including oxygen and Ph levels.

"Alkalinity was high and it had lower phosphates," Grabner said of Turkey Creek.

The invertebrate information was inconclusive, he said. There were more invertebrates in Flat Branch Creek, but a bigger variety in Turkey Creek.

Adrienne Mason, a senior in forensic chemistry from Searcy, Arkansas, presented her research on the reliability of eyewitness evidence.

It has been established previously that eyewitness evidence is not at all reliable and has resulted in many wrongful convictions, Mason said. Groups like The Innocence Project has worked to reverse many convictions using DNA evidence.

In her research, she staged a disruption in a classroom. A woman entered the room and loudly chastised the instructor for not meeting deadlines, then left.

"They overall did best on hair color," Mason said. "They scored lower on height and clothing."

There were 25 students in the class, but two were eliminated. One declined to participate and the other knew the intruder personally.

"This field needs more research," Mason said.

Columbia College biology professor Brad Sharf said the symposium is a good opportunity for students to present their research to a wide audience.

"It gives the student the ability to present their data," Sharf said. "It's something that's really important in the science field."
