Best teleprompter apps for Mac in 2024

For those unaware, a teleprompter refers to the device used to give presenters visual access to the text they need to speak. While Media/News publications largely use such tools, numerous content creators developing videos can find teleprompter apps on Mac helpful as they provide almost the same utility as an actual teleprompter.

Since Apple devices don’t have an in-built teleprompter, here is my curated list of the best teleprompter apps for Mac. Let’s get started!

1. Promt+ Teleprompter: Editor’s choice

PromtPlus Teleprompter is the best teleprompter app on this list as it provides the Voice Recognition feature. The text scrolls automatically as it recognizes what is being read. And it works flawlessly. While other apps provide this feature, this app performed the best in our testing.

The app also allows you to import your scripts from Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud, or OneDrive in .txt, .rtf, .pdf, and Google Doc formats. The app will also display a clock and allow you to set a timer, which is extremely useful for time-bound content.  

Above that, it’s free. Yes, this app is free! However, the caveat is that a script can have only 750 words. If you want to go beyond this limitation, you’ll have to pay a one-time fee of $10.00. Totally worth it, in my opinion, if you regularly use a teleprompter tool. Besides, it performs well for meetings, etc., too.

2. Virtual Teleprompter lite: Best free teleprompter for Mac

Visual Teleprompter lite is a basic teleprompter app. If you need to use teleprompters occasionally for presenting during lectures or meetings, this is the best app. It turns transparent when you click start and displays a timer and auto scrolls.

Further, you can adjust the scrolling speed by using the arrow keys or even manually scrolling through text.  

You can set the font size and have three font color options: black, white, and green. A significant feature of this app is that it has support for RTL languages such as Arabic & Hebrew. 

It has a 1,000-word limit and supports only one script as it is the app’s free version. The app’s Pro version will set you back by $3.99 and is a one-time purchase. I’ll provide you with links to both; get the one that best suits your needs.

PowerPrompter Express is not only the most professional teleprompter for Mac but also provides users with a good deal of applications. There are numerous settings under Script, Overlay, and Displays. It is beginner-friendly, and professionals who are used to teleprompter tools will feel at home.

The app is optimized for both Intel and M1 macs and is not a Windows port. If you need to confine a script under a certain time range, you can set the timer, and the text will scroll accordingly.  

You can also open multiple teleprompter windows at the same time. And the option to turn a window transparent is available here. This is the free version, and the only drawback is that it can prompt text for five minutes only. You’ll have to buy the paid version to unlock the time cap.

And it’s not just through one mode; you can use multiple devices to control this app like a keyboard, presentation remote, media remote, gaming controllers, foot pedals, Wi-Fi/LAN through browsers and other iOS devices too. That’s an exhausting list, but there are multiple possibilities.

How do I control the scroll speed?

Click the  Start Prompting button in the sidebar or press your keyboard spacebar to start scrolling the script. Rotate your mouse scroll wheel to increase the scroll speed. Rotate it in the opposite direction to slow the scroll speed. Pause and resume using the spacebar. See our Quick Start Guide for more details.

Can I use PromptDog with a remote?

Yes, any remote control device that supports keyboard mapping should work. You can find the shortcuts available in our Quick Start Guide . For details on recommended hardware, see the tips in the free training provided via email when you start a trial or purchase a license.

Will PromptDog run on my iPad or Android tablet?

While PromptDog can’t be installed natively as an app, you can display the PromptDog output on either an iPad or an Android tablet and achieve the same result. There are several 3rd-party apps available which are designed specifically to use your tablet as a second monitor for your desktop or laptop computer. Our favorite is Duet Display .

Can I use my laptop webcam with PromptDog?

You could, but we don't recommend it. For best results, the talent (presenter) should be positioned at least 10 ft away from the camera. Any closer and viewers may detect side to side eye movement as you read each line of text. Most webcams have a fixed focal length (ie no optical zoom), so if you are correctly positioned the shot framing will probably be less than optimal. The good news is that if you have a smartphone, you can use a lens adapter like this one to add optical zoom functionality to your phone's HD camera.

Below we’ll look at several ways to use your Apple devices as a teleprompter including free options without needing any additional devices to solutions that integrate with teleprompter hardware and a high-quality camera.

How to use Mac, iPhone, and iPad as a teleprompter

If you’d like to start out with a no-cost option, Pages is a great place to begin if you need a basic teleprompter for off-screen use cases.

• Pop your script into Pages on your iPad or iPhone
• Tap the three-dot circle icon in the top right corner
• Choose Presenter Mode
• Tap the Aa icon in the top right, tweak any font settings, then tap the toggle next to Auto Scroll
• When turned on, you can adjust the text scroll speed with the slider just below the toggle

If you’re looking for something more feature-rich, a third-party app can do the trick. We’ve found PromptSmart Pro to be a great option with features like speech recognition that adjusts prompts to the speed of your voice (and will pause if you go off-script). It can also invert text to be compatible with two-way teleprompter glass . Or you can also choose to record video while reading scripts with your iPads built-in camera.

Speakflow is a rich, web-based teleprompter solution so it’s easy to use across Mac, iPad, iPhone, or any other device.

Speakflow offers advanced features like voice-activated scroll, a remote mode that lets you sync multiple devices, and an overlay mode so you can still see what’s on your screen.

Speakflow also features valuable collaboration tools like the ability to write scripts with others along with organizing and keeping track of changes.

You can try out Speakflow for free with unlimited scripts and limited use of the voice-activated scroll and video recording. For full access to all of the features, Speakflow runs from $10/month .

Another interesting solution is using Luna Display and two-way teleprompter glass (beam splitter) to be able to maintain eye contact with people in video calls if you want to use a high-quality camera like a DSLR.
