How to Give a Killer Presentation

For more than 30 years, the TED conference series has presented enlightening talks that people enjoy watching. In this article, Anderson, TED’s curator, shares five keys to great presentations:

  • Frame your story (figure out where to start and where to end).
  • Plan your delivery (decide whether to memorize your speech word for word or develop bullet points and then rehearse it—over and over).
  • Work on stage presence (but remember that your story matters more than how you stand or whether you’re visibly nervous).
  • Plan the multimedia (whatever you do, don’t read from PowerPoint slides).
  • Put it together (play to your strengths and be authentic).

According to Anderson, presentations rise or fall on the quality of the idea, the narrative, and the passion of the speaker. It’s about substance—not style. In fact, it’s fairly easy to “coach out” the problems in a talk, but there’s no way to “coach in” the basic story—the presenter has to have the raw material. So if your thinking is not there yet, he advises, decline that invitation to speak. Instead, keep working until you have an idea that’s worth sharing.

Lessons from TED

A little more than a year ago, on a trip to Nairobi, Kenya, some colleagues and I met a 12-year-old Masai boy named Richard Turere, who told us a fascinating story. His family raises livestock on the edge of a vast national park, and one of the biggest challenges is protecting the animals from lions—especially at night. Richard had noticed that placing lamps in a field didn’t deter lion attacks, but when he walked the field with a torch, the lions stayed away. From a young age, he’d been interested in electronics, teaching himself by, for example, taking apart his parents’ radio. He used that experience to devise a system of lights that would turn on and off in sequence—using solar panels, a car battery, and a motorcycle indicator box—and thereby create a sense of movement that he hoped would scare off the lions. He installed the lights, and the lions stopped attacking. Soon villages elsewhere in Kenya began installing Richard’s “lion lights.”

Whatever the scenario, you have very little time to capture your audience’s attention and get your point across when presenting information—about three seconds, according to research [ 2 ]. Step 1: Do your research and carefully plan your pitch

Any client presentation starts with a who: who is it for?

The answer is your client.

You should know everything about them before you step into the meeting with them. Go into the room with a good understanding of their business, their industry, and how your services fit into the picture. 

Prepare by researching their past projects, understanding their goals, and even studying business presentation examples to ensure your communication is effective.

Start by researching the basics:

What industry are they in?

How big is their company and how big is their team?

What are the main goals they want to hit?

What roadblocks are stopping them?

How can product/service help them?

Look at their website and LinkedIn pages to see what services or products they’re selling. If you’ve done work for similar clients in their industry, check back at past projects and pitches, and see the pain points were you spent the most time. 

Then you need to understand the company’s size and more importantly, how they plan to grow and scale their business.

How you sell your why depends on who you are selling to. A CEO with 200 employees has different challenges to a scrappy startup owner with a couple of employees on the books. Either way, explain your why by: 

Acknowledging their pain points. Talk about the client's problems and what they need to do to reach their goals. Show them that you understand their issues and build trust from the start of the presentation.

Asking questions. Presentations shouldn't be a one-sided affair. Asking the client questions makes them feel comfortable and helps you understand their needs.

Introducing your brand as the solution. Tie the client's problems to your product/service. If they need a new website , talk about how you can make that happen and what the process looks like. If they have hit a brick wall with their marketing, explain why they may be struggling and what they can do to change it.

Step 2: Take care of some housekeeping

Your clients are busy—that’s a given.

But so are you. 

Make sure you set some ground rules before the presentation starts so that it runs smoothly. These can be basic rules like: 

Always get to the meeting first. Whether the meeting is in the client's office or on Zoom – get there first and early. Give yourself enough time to organize your slide deck and get comfortable with the pitch before the client arrives (or logs in.)

Test your tech. Open your presentation, check that it's working, and test each slide. If you're using a laptop or projector, have it open to the first slide at the start of your presentation, ready for when the client arrives.

Practice your pitch. Is it just you presenting to the client? Do you have a team joining you? Don’t show up to the meeting without a game plan. Rehearse what you’re going to say and how you’ll answer client questions before the presentation.  

Cut to the chase. Your client isn’t your friend. Don’t waste too much time with small talk. If the pitch goes well – they'll move forward – not always on your small talk skills.

These steps are so basic that it almost seems like they don't need to be mentioned. But walking into a presentation with a poorly prepared pitch or a slide deck that takes 15 minutes to fix is the fastest way for it to fall flat.

Step 3: Turn the presentation into a marketing funnel

Your presentation should have one goal—getting the client to agree to the next steps or sign a contract.

So, why not design your slide deck like a marketing funnel—with a beginning, middle, and end?

You must tread a fine line between a lecture and a negotiation with client presentations. If the slide deck is too information-heavy, clients can feel like you're speaking at them instead of talking to them.

And if you don't take charge of the meeting, it can go off track and makes it harder to get your client focused on the next steps.

Aim for somewhere in the middle and tell a story where your slides convince the client that your solution is a good fit. Your presentation deck should include these sections:

Beginning: Set the stage and tell the client what the presentation is about, why you’re there, and how you plan on working together.

Middle: The meat of the presentation. Don’t overload the slides with text. They should be a visual background to back up what you’re saying.

End: Use this as your call to action and outlines the next steps. Here, you give the client a reason to book another meeting or sign a contract with you.

Finally, the presentation winds up by using a pricing chart as its CTA. Don't overthink how you tie in your CTA to the client – you know your value and what you can bring to the table – so just clearly say it.

Step 4: Use visuals to tell and sell the story

Visuals are your friend during a client presentation. 

They have obvious benefits—they grab your client’s attention, break up text-heavy slides and make complex data easier to digest. 

But there are other reasons why adding visuals to your presentation is a good move.

The SEO software company SEMRush asked over 200 agency and brand reps what made their presentations successful and found 74% of brands said it was tailoring the proposal to the client. They recommended using images to help clients understand concepts that usually end up on a spreadsheet or hidden under a mountain of text. This is easy to do.

Step 5: Open the pitch up into a two-way conversation

Once the presentation is done, don’t just pack up and leave—start a conversation with the client instead. 

Getting feedback as soon as the pitch is over is crucial. You need to know if your presentation resonated with them and iron out any concerns or questions they have.

Kickstart the feedback process by asking the client:

Did you have any questions about anything we mentioned in the presentation?

What can we do to move this forward and start working together?

Don’t leave the meeting in limbo.

Be clear about what you want to do next with the client moving forward. Don’t say that you’ll follow up in a couple of days—it’s too vague. Be more direct. 

Make sure you and your client agree on a defined deadline for when the deal should move forward. If the follow-up call goes well and the client wants to go ahead, send a contract over to seal the deal.

The minimum possible deadline is under 12 hours. It is best suited for small orders, such as redesigning 3-5 slides without complex graphs and visuals. Sometimes, we can fulfill a larger order but must check your instructions first. In case of such a request, please get in touch with our 24/7 support team, and they’ll tell you whether it is realistic to accommodate it before your deadline.

A 24-hour deadline is perfect for urgent orders of approximately 10 slides. However, if you need 20-40 slides done within such a period, we’ll typically divide the order among several designers who’ll follow one style to ensure design consistency.

If you’re not in a rush, the recommended deadline for standard presentations of 10-20 slides is 3-5 days . This time is enough to approve the draft with you, finalize the presentation and, if necessary, make additional changes. Remember, the longer the deadline, the lower the cost of work.

Can you redesign a presentation in a language other than English?

Yes, that’s not a problem for our professional presentation company. We have extensive experience redesigning presentations in Spanish, French, Chinese, German, and other languages. However, as long as we don’t offer translation services, the content has to be provided by you.

In case you have any preferences regarding the color scheme or the list of colors that should not be used, upload it with the instructions, and the designer will consider your wishes. Amani Family Services hosted a community conversation Tuesday about how it and other agencies plan to help refugees through the Welcoming Fort Wayne initiative.

“It’s such a privilege to be able to stand here and talk about such an amazing accomplishment I believe we’ve been able to (make) for the community,” said Ewelina Connolly, Amani’s CEO, adding that Tuesday was the agency’s first opportunity to detail the plan publicly.

Welcoming Fort Wayne, a collaboration between Amani, Downtown Fort Wayne and Greater Fort Wayne Inc., has four goals: connected communities and public safety; civic engagement; economic development and entrepreneurship; and education.

Amani, a local nonprofit social service agency with a mission solely focused on serving refugees, hosted Tuesday’s presentation and panel at the Allen County Public Library downtown.

The presentation focused on Welcoming Fort Wayne’s mission and goals, and the panel included community members who are helping meet those goals.

Panel participants included Connolly; Meg Distler, executive director of the St. Joseph Foundation; Megan Grable, neighborhood planner for the city of Fort Wayne; Emily Keirns, director of English Language Learners for Fort Wayne Community Schools; and Rosalina Perez, entrepreneurship coach at the Northeast Indiana Innovation Center.

Connolly said Fort Wayne is on track to become the first certified welcoming city in Indiana, which is the formal designation for cities or counties that have created policies and programs reflecting their values and commitment to immigrant inclusion, according to welcomingamerica.org .

Grable said the city hopes to be certified by 2025.

“The more that these new Americans are incorporated into the social fabric of our community and our economy, the better off we all are,” she added.

Rui Gui, Amani’s mission advancement specialist, said Fort Wayne and Allen County are not alone in their work. Through Welcoming America, more than 300 communities, cities and nonprofits are committed to helping immigrants and refugees, she added.

Ellen Cutter, chief economic development officer for Greater Fort Wayne, said nearly two-thirds of local businesses plan to add employees in the coming years. But business owners are concerned they won’t be able to meet demand.

“We must be willing to have constructive and positive solution-oriented conversations around immigration,” Cutter said, adding that 1,300 businesses are operated by immigrants and that they can help the workforce.

“Truly understanding our local landscape helps us develop strategies that fit and are appropriate for Fort Wayne and Allen County.”

Michael Galbraith, president of Downtown Fort Wayne, said immigrants positively affect the city’s downtown. He mentioned Gateways for Growth Challenges, an opportunity for localities to receive research support.

In November 2022, the American Immigration Council and Welcoming America announced that Fort Wayne was one of 10 communities that received a Gateways for Growth research, technical assistance, and matching grant award.

The award led to a report prepared by the immigration council for Amani, Greater Fort Wayne and Downtown Fort Wayne titled “ New Americans in Allen County,” which showed how immigrants impact the community.

“The progress that we’re making, and the progress that we’re going to make, is going to be unbelievably beneficial for our city,” Galbraith said.

Perez said it’s important for community leaders to follow through and help immigrants achieve their goals, even when that may be difficult. At the Northeast Indiana Innovation Center, she said they are committed to creating programs based on what immigrants say they need.

“There’s different countries, different industries, and then everyone is at a different level,” Perez said. “We want to make sure that we’re getting their voices heard.”

Connolly, who is a Polish immigrant, shared Perez’s sentiments and said organizations need to be accountable.

“We’ve seen the promises, we’ve heard the thoughts and prayers,” she said. “We don’t need that. We need actual work.”

Today, new public management approaches are generally accepted and widely used. The subsidiarity principle that preceded these approaches, is widely accepted and the trends and practices of decentralization are increasingly affecting the structure and service delivery of public administrations instead of centralized management throughout the world. The Russian Federation has become a different and interesting country in terms of political and administrative structure and function, with being an important actor in world politics. In the course of the disintegration of the Soviet Union and the transition from a communist ideology to a liberal democratic structure, Russia has been under the influence of new public administration approaches that are influencing the world. Moy Dokumenti service centers indicate a significant improvement in decentralization in the providing of the public services. Examining the localization activities in the restructuring of public administration in Russia and in the presentation of public services will contribute to the literature which is weak due to lack of sufficient studies.

The purpose of this research is to assess the attitudes and perceptions of Lithuanian public administrators on the process of decentralization as it is currently implemented in Lithuania. The purpose of this research is exploratory and the conceptual framework utilized is descriptive categories. The concept of decentralization has taken on many different meanings and expected ends throughout the years. In order to guide this research, and formulate meaningful survey questions, the process of decentralization and its perceived impact on the bureaucracy, society, and the relationship between bureaucracy and society were studied. The data shows that while the process of decentralization is received positively and with open arms, the current implementation of the process in Lithuania is leaving some public administrators to doubt its effectiveness. Some administrators have shown through their responses to the survey, that they are a little hesitant in increasing the magnitude of decentralization and especially privatization. This hesitation could fade as the administrators begin to understand, and more importantly realize, some of the long-term effects of the process. It is clear that the tight grip of control that the central government still holds over the localities will continue to hamper further efforts at decentralization and national reform. Only when the Republic of Lithuania decentralizes the power and authority of the central government will the perceptions and doubts of the public administrators either by quashed or realized.

Between 1989 and 1991, a giant region of the world underwent revolutionary change. To this day, it is widely referred to as Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). This book represents an overview and a reflection of changes in countries that implemented the most profound public administration reforms (PAR) – countries that joined the European Union (EU) between 2004 and 2013. Contributors to this book are prominent public administration researchers in their respective countries; this allows for in-depth insights both into the history of reforms, as they were experienced and into current topics of PAR as they are debated at the national level. We find that the concept of CEE has lost relevance in public administration research, and we are in need of a more nuanced theory. In the face of mounting challenges to EU integration this book, we believe, will contribute to the search of public governance solutions for the benefit of all Europeans.

The book represents an effort to conceptualize the content and dimensions of the Eastern European (EE) region post-communist / socialist transformation upon the role and results of PAR as a “success story”. The general research question that we addressed has been based on an assumption of radical change in public governance in respective countries due to their Europeanization. Simultaneously, we have envisaged that: A) PAR are facing so called implementation gap in general, B) there are crucial differences in individual (groups of) countries (e.g. among Baltic countries, Visegrad (V4) or former Austrian-Hungarian or Yugoslavian countries, etc.). Especially with regard to governance convergence towards the EU standards and among each other as well as different trajectories of divergence as the homogenizing effects of communism have faded and construct a more relevant and contemporary theory of PAR that could replace the outdated notion of one-size-fitsall post-communist / EE transformation theory.

Fact Sheet on FTC’s Proposed Final Noncompete Rule

The following outline provides a high-level overview of the FTC’s proposed final rule :

  • Specifically, the final rule provides that it is an unfair method of competition—and therefore a violation of Section 5 of the FTC Act—for employers to enter into noncompetes with workers after the effective date.
  • Fewer than 1% of workers are estimated to be senior executives under the final rule.
  • Specifically, the final rule defines the term “senior executive” to refer to workers earning more than $151,164 annually who are in a “policy-making position.”
  • Reduced health care costs: $74-$194 billion in reduced spending on physician services over the next decade.
  • New business formation: 2.7% increase in the rate of new firm formation, resulting in over 8,500 additional new businesses created each year.
  • This reflects an estimated increase of about 3,000 to 5,000 new patents in the first year noncompetes are banned, rising to about 30,000-53,000 in the tenth year.
  • This represents an estimated increase of 11-19% annually over a ten-year period.
  • The average worker’s earnings will rise an estimated extra $524 per year.
