India clinch the final-ball thriller!
What an incredible finish to this exceptional fixture. 16 needed off the final over and only left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz to bowl. He bowled with a long run up with Rizwan standing back to deny the Indian pair of Kohli and Hardik to get a win. Hardik fell first ball trying to hit big. Next two balls fetched a single and a double, taking India's equation to 13 off last 3 balls. Nawaz then bowled a high full toss that Kohli deposited over deep square leg and the umpire ruled it a no ball. So the equation came down to 6 off 3. The next ball Kohli was foxed but the ball hit the stumps and ran down to the third man. As the ball was a free hit delivery, the dismissal didn't count.
The equation was down to 3 off 2 and then Dinesh Karthik got out stumped. The equation was now 2 off 1 and R Ashwin let a leg side ball go down and it was 1 off 1. Then the field came up and a calm Ashwin hit one over mid off to complete a phenomenal chase. What scenes! Indian players crowd Kohli, Rohit picks him up, and it appears Kohli is in tears. What a finish!
India need 16 off 6...
What a finish we have on our hands. India have dwarfed the 48 off 18 equation to 31 off 12 and now to 16 off 6. The 19th over was turning Pakistan's way as Haris Rauf kept up his pace and control, but erred on the very last two balls. First a slow bouncer that Kohli saw through and hit for a straight six. And then a leg-side ball has been deposited over fine leg for another six. 16 to get from 6 with Nawaz to bowl...
Fifty for Kohli but India's chase equation tricky...
Virat Kohli pulls a Shaheen Afridi delivery to get his half-century but the equation - 48 off 18 - is tricky for India, considering Haris Rauf still has one over left.
Hardik, Kohli shift gears...
Eerily, they do it in the 12th over too (Remember, the 21-run Axar Patel over?). Pakistan's left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz was at the receiving end this time - getting hit for three sixes in the over. Are the tables about to turn?
India are four down!
The Axar Patel experiment at #5 is a failure. Not because the left-hander couldn't play hit shots, but because of a miscommuncation with Kohli on a run. A bit of a yes-no while trying to pinch a single and Kohli sent him back. Axar turned around, dashed back and even put in a dive but he was caught short. Pakistan only just picked the wicket there because Rizwan didn't collect the ball cleanly and seemed to have broken the stumps with his hands. But replays showed that the ball ricocheted off his glove and hit the stumps. The bail lit up and was out of the groove before Rizwan could break the stumps with his hands. So the TV umpire ruled in Pakistan's favour. It was a close call but went Pakistan's way.
Suryakumar Yadav falls!
MCG has been silenced! Pakistan are ecstatic! And why shouldn't they be? Haris Rauf has taken out India's current best T20 batter with a mean short ball. Suryakumar looked to adjust last minute by swaying back and lapping the ball over the slip cordon but the bounce was steep and an edge went to Rizwan behind the stumps.
When India fans say 'over to Kohli', they truly mean it...
India 10 for 2...
Rohit Sharma is gone! He's poked at one from Haris Rauf just outside the offstump and Iftikhar Ahmed grabbed a sharp catch. Early trouble for the chasing side here. Over to Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav!
Naseem Shah strikes early...
And out goes KL Rahul. It was a nervy start from India's openers - sort of taking stock of how the ball was behaving for the Pakistan quicks. Rahul here ended up being too tentative on a forward defence and ended up playing the ball onto the stumps. This chase is not going to be easy by any stretch of imagination - India are 7 for 1.
Pakistan finish on 159/8
Shan Masood and Iftikhar Ahmed got fifties, India pushed back hard with wickets through the middle but they've conceded 53 off the last five overs to let Pakistan post 159 for 8. At one stage, Pakistan were looking at a sub-140 total so they'd go into the break thinking they've got enough for a win here.
Quality meme here...
Pakistan get a late move on...
Shaheen Afridi can swing his bat too! He's smashed Arshdeep over deep square leg and Pakistan have pushed past 150!
Arshdeep returns to pick a third
This is exceptional bowling pressure from India. They endured a mini-assault in the middle and hit back even stronger. After Hardik dismantled the middle-order, Arshdeep returned to pick out the dangerous Asif Ali to complete the collapse. Pakistan are now seven down and staring at a below par total.
Hardik Pandya clearly loves playing Pakistan in this format
Another one for Hardik!
India's sixth bowler is doing the trick. Once again its his hard length that does the trick. Mohammad Nawaz surveyed the field and looked to make room and cut a ball towards third man but could only faintly nick it to Dinesh Karthik behind.
We know the feeling, Marnus!
Hardik Pandya strikes twice!
Two identical wickets for the India pacer as he works his hard length skills on Shadab Khan and Haider Ali. The two hole out straight to Suryakumar Yadav at long on and deep midwicket. Suddenly, Pakistan are five down!
Iftikhar Ahmed flies, Iftikhar Ahmed falls
6 0 6 6 0 3 - what a way to signal Pakistan's shift of gears than an over like this worth 21 runs. Iftikhar absolutely carted Axar Patel around in his first over, hitting straight sixes at will! He got to a half-century on the way, getting Pakistan's scoring rate up. Rohit Sharma brought back Shami and the move worked perfectly. The pacer went full, straight and fast and trapped the right-hander leg before. Iftikhar walks off having done his job with a 34-ball 51.
A third? Almost...
India thought they had another when Shan Masood top-edged a pull against a Shami bouncer towards Ashwin at fine leg. The offie dived forward and seemed to have got his big palms under the ball, but replays showed that the ball had just bounced before going into his hands. Masood lives to die another day.
Whisper it slowly, Pakistan fans. Shan Masood is leading the revival here, in the company of Iftikhar Ahmed. Long way to go still because India have been excellent with the ball and they've got options. The scoring rate is still under six, which is almost criminal in T20s these days, but at least Pakistan have a partnership going for now.
STAT: Only the third time in 49 T20Is since Jan 2021 both Babar & Rizwan has been dismissed for single figure scores.
Sorry, that made me chuckle!
Mohammad Rizwan is gone now!
An incredible test is coming up for Pakistan's faltering middle-order as the bedrock of their batting has been broken already, and we're only in the fourth over. It's Arshdeep again to make the break through. Rizwan played and missed a few beautiful full deliveries that shaped away from him so when he saw the left-armer go a little short, his eyes lit up. But Arshdeep's delivery was quick and he got hurried by the pace, top-edging an attempted pull to the fine leg fielder. 15 for 2!
Arshdeep is spitting fire
He's not necessarily express pace but the two batters are currently dancing to his tunes. Swing for him is trouble for the Pakistan duo. They need a shackles-breaking over somewhere here.
What a start for Arshdeep!
Arshdeep fetches a wicket off the first ball he has ever bowled in a World Cup. Definitely no nerves there as he pitches this up on a good length and swings it back to Babar Azam, who misses it completely to get hit on the pad. That looked plumb instantly as the finger goes up. Pakistan lose a massive wicket very early in the game. Babar also takes a review with him back to the pavilion.
Pressure, pressure Pakistan!
Great start for Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Pinged Rizwan on his glove, making the opener wince a little in pain. There's some swing too. Not a run off the bat in the first six balls - account opened with a wide.
A match-up to watch early on?
Thoughts on the line-ups...
Ashwin has made it ahead of Chahal for perhaps two reasons. 1. Pakistan's openers - the bedrock of that team's batting - has struggled against offspin and 2. Ashwin gives batting cushion at #8. That's crucial when the team aims to go hell for leather from the start and till the end. Shami without much game time is interesting, but he looked match-ready in the one over against Australia in the warm-ups.
Pakistan's line-up is along expected lines. Will be interesting to see how Shaheen Afridi goes too, having just returned from his lengthy injury layoff.
India XI: Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik, Axar Patel, R Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Shami
Pakistan XI : Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, Shan Masood, Haider Ali, Mohammad Nawaz, Shadab Khan, Iftikhar Ahmed, Asif Ali, Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, Naseem Shah
TOSS : India win toss, opt to bowl first. R Ashwin and Mohammed Shami make it to India's XI.
Some early hints at who India might pick? We think so...
Prelude - India. Pakistan. World Cup. MCG
Hello and good morning! Yes, you've arrived at THAT day. It's India vs Pakistan in a World Cup at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Bring out the popcorn bags, settle into that couch and believe the hype - even if there is so much more to this annual ICC fixture between two very good sides. But be mindful, patience is key this evening for rains have lashed parts of Australia, even causing flooding. The forecast for rain in Melbourne was at around 82% a week ago, which meant a game was out of question. But it has improved, so there's some optimism of a game, even if a truncated one. The stickler is there's rain predicted right at the start of the game, so we're in for a bit of delay.
Let's forget about the impending rain a little and focus on the game. India and Pakistan in a World Cup has been the broadcaster's dream, and they are hardly subtle about it. So here we are on the first sunday of the Super 12s getting ready for Rohit-v-Babar. But if you look beyond the obvious rivalry narratives, there are far more layers to peel and find a different gravy of intrigue, as our man in Melbourne Kaushik R puts it in this excellent preview .

We are not pressing the panic button: Kohli after India's loss against Pakistan
Indian captain Virat Kohli on Sunday had no qualms in admitting that his team was "outplayed" by Pakistan in the ICC T20 World Cup here but said his players are not the ones to press the panic button. Pakistan produced a clinical effort to crush India by 10 wickets for their first win in a World Cup match in 13 attempts. Chasing 152 for victory after putting India in, Pakistan completed the task in 17. 5 overs, leaving the Indian team and its millions of fans stunned. 10:00 PM: India Match Report
Skipper Virat Kohli wasn't at his fluent best but his 57 off 49 balls was the saving grace in India's middling score of 151 for seven against Pakistan in their opening Super 12 match of the ICC T20 World Cup on Sunday. His 29th half-century in T20 Internationals wasn't as good as some of his other innings but considering that he diffused a potentially troubling situation created by Shaheen Shah Afridi's (3/31 in 4 overs) menacing opening spell, this knock was significant. Shaheen also did his bit at the death, removing the Indian skipper in the penultimate over. Kohli got support from Rishabh Pant (39 off 30 balls) during a 53-run stand but had to do the bulk of heavy lifting in a pressure cooker scenario, something he has been accustomed to for the past one decade. His innings had five fours and a six as India managed a score which would give the bowlers at least something to fight for on a track that can't exactly be called batting-friendly.
7:10 PM: Virat Kohli opined that his side doesn't mind batting first asserting that toss is not in his control. India has left out senior spinner R Ashwin and there is no Shardul Thakur also. The other two players missing out are Ishan Kishan and Rahul Chahar.

1:40 PM: T20 World Cup 2021: 5 reasons why India can beat Pakistan in iconic clash in Dubai
Virat Kohli ’s men in blue will cross swords with Babar Azam ’s Pakistan on October 24, Sunday at the Dubai International Stadium.
The epic clash will be the campaign opener for both the sides in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021. While India will play their first-ever T20I match at this UAE venue, the blue brigade are still the favourites heading into the upcoming match against the old rivals.
5 reasons why India can beat Pakistan in iconic clash in Dubai ( File Photo)
India’s experienced top order
With Indian skipper Virat Kohli having already declared India’s top order batting combination, the men in blue have three genuine match-winners to start their proceedings.
The in-form KL Rahul with the experienced Rohit Sharma speaks volumes for the opening pair. The white ball specialist- Virat Kohli at number three gives India a rock solid and experienced trio with the willow.
Besides, Rahul and Sharma’s demonstrated run form in India’s warm up matches backed with Kohli’s special batting armour when it comes to Pakistan, gives enough reasons for the men in green to be wary of the Indian line-up.

12:00 PM: Kohli expresses his confidence in terms of execution of plans in T20 World Cup
7:01 PM: IND vs PAK T20 WC: Kohli expects better pitches than IPL during World Cup
India captain Virat Kohli expects that the pitches on offer for the T20 World Cup will be better compared to the ones that were on offer during the recently concluded IPL where stroke-making became difficult for batters.
The Indian captain, who also led RCB for the last time in IPL, had plied his trade on all tracks and feels that ICC will present them with better strips which actually was work on progress during the IPL.
Asked if he sees nature of tracks changing, the Indian captain agreed.
"I believe so. Looking at the IPL final , I believe that quality of pitches definitely is going to be far better in this T20 World Cup," Kohli said on the eve of the big game against Pakistan.
The normal rules for ICC events will also play its part in improved playing conditions. India will play four out of its five group league games in Dubai with the match against Afghanistan being held in Abu Dhabi.
"Also being an ICC tournament, we know that standard of pitches is going to be maintained up to a certain degree which is consistent across all venues.
"I knew that to protect the pitches for a tournament like World Cup, there had to be some compromise in playing conditions when we played the IPL. We all understood that and wicket in the IPL final (between CSK and KKR) was very very good," he explained.
Kohli also agreed that dew factor will be prominent as the tournament progresses.
"Dew factor will be prominent as we head into this time of the year in Dubai. That is also going to help the pitches play much better.
"I believe Abu Dhabi and Dubai are going to be best pitches out of all the venues. Sharjah more or less will stay more or less true to its nature, which is slow and low and I don't myself too many high scoring matches ....," Kohli concluded.
5:06 PM: IND vs PAK: Imran Khan shared his experience of 1992 World Cup triumph, says Babar
Former Pakistan captain and the country's current Prime Minister Imran Khan has interacted with the team ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup, skipper Babar Azam said here on Saturday.
Imran shared with the team his experience of leading Pakistan to their maiden World Cup triumph in 1992.
"Before coming, we had a meeting and in that he (Imran) had shared his experience, about what was his mindset in the 1992 World Cup, what was his and the team's body language," Babar said on the eve of his team's clash against arch-rivals India.
4:26 PM: IND vs PAK T20 WC: Kohli warns detractors; won't give fodder to create controversy on quitting captaincy
India captain Virat Kohli on Saturday refused to get into any debate on the rationale behind his decision to quit national T20 captaincy after the ongoing T20 World Cup, saying he won't provide fodder to controversy seekers.
Eyebrows were raised when Kohli announced on his social media that he would relinquish captaincy after the mega event in the UAE.
2:17 PM: Pakistan announce their 12-man squad a day ahead of the match. Let's take a look:
Pakistan (Playing XI): Babar Azam (captain), Mohammed Rizwan, Fakhar Zaman , Mohammed Hafeez, Shoaib Malik , Asif Ali, Imad Wasim, Shadab Khan , Harris Rauf, Hasan Ali , Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haider Ali.
2:10 PM: MS Dhoni fan Bashir Chacha from Pakistan spotted at Dubai stadium with a jersey "WELCOME BACK DHONI". The famed Pak cricket fan stopped watching India-Pakistan matches from the stadium after Dhoni retired from international cricket last year.
When Harbhajan and Shoaib Akhtar were involved in friendly banter hours ahead of the big day.
Amid all the razzmatazz building around the big clash, former India Test opener Aakash Chopra suggested not to forget the other matches today.
READ: Cursory look at India vs Pakistan WC matches in cricketing history
India will open their T20 World Cup 2021 campaign against the arch-rivals Pakistan on October 24, Sunday. Regarded as one of the fiercest sports rivalries in the world, the two cricketing nations will square off in the marquee series at the Dubai International Stadium, UAE. Ahead of the iconic clash this weekend, let’s have a look at India-Pakistan cricket competitiveness over the years in the prestigious world cup campaigns. History is a witness to substantiate that India are favourites against the neighbouring country heading into the upcoming clash on Sunday. Stating India as ‘winners’ against the ‘men in green’ in the World Cup campaigns would be an understatement as the blue brigade have ‘conquered’ over Pakistan in all world cup matches across all formats, leaving the latter with zero wins. Till now, the two counties have squared off in seven ODI World Cup matches, all of which have been won by India. Let’s relive India’s scintillating journey against Pakistan in the 50-over World Cup ahead of the upcoming prestigious T20 clash on Sunday. India’s winning streak in the ODI World Cup started back then in 1992 in Sydney, where India attracted a convincing 43-run win courtesy of India’s remarkable bowling. After putting 216 runs on the board, India gave Pakistan a tough chase and kept scalping regular wickets. Manoj Prabhakar and Kapil Dev did the trick with the ball, both of whom claimed two wickets each with an economy of less than three. The waves turned in India’s favour when Srinath knocked over Miandad with a splendid yorker. With the bat, the master blaster, who was just 18-years then, smashed a half century and was adjudged as the player of the match.
READ: T20 World Cup 2021: A look at India vs Pakistan quick stats in T20Is
The T20 World Cup 2021 has kicked off and one of the mouth-watering contests between India-Pakistan is round the corner. Virat Kohli led India and Babar Azam guided Pakistan will cross swords at the Dubai International Stadium on October 24, Sunday. As the two teams gear up for the shortest format of the game scheduled to be played this weekend as a part of the T20 World Cup 2021, we look at the quick stats to rekindle the buzz ahead of the India-Pakistan contest.
Head to head
Most runs/ top run-getters .
Virat Kohli and co. will take on Babar Azam led Pakistan in the iconic T20 clash at the Dubai International Stadium on October 24, Sunday. While India would aim to continue their unidirectional winning spree against Pakistan, the green brigade, on the other hand, would aim to turn their fortunes in the upcoming clash.
Surprisingly, the matches of these two heavyweights have been quite one-sided in India’s favour, especially when it comes to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The two sides have squared off a total of five times, where matches have been utterly ruled the blue brigade. India have clinched victory in four matches and the remaining match had concluded in a tie. With zero wins against India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup so far, Babar Azam and co. would run errands to register their maiden win in this tournament when they lock horns against India this weekend.
Ahead of the much-awaited India vs Pakistan contest on Sunday, let us journey as to how the two teams have fared out in their clashes so far in the history of the tournament.

India vs Pakistan - Six key turning points of the epic battle
India got their 2022 T20 World Cup campaign off to an exhilarating start, beating arch rivals Pakistan by four wickets in a nerve-wracking contest at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday. The Men in Blue gave the country a special Diwali gift on the eve of the festival, with Rohit Sharma and co. clinching a nail-biting thriller courtesy a chasing masterclass from Virat Kohli, who rolled back the years and once again showed why he is considered to be the best chase-master in limited overs cricket. Here's a look at some of the key turning points of the high-octane clash:
I have no idea how that happened, lost for words: Kohli
Virat Kohli was lost for words after leaving the cricket world speechless with his cricket here on Sunday. In his own words, King Kohli had no idea how he had engineered India's epic win over arch-rivals Pakistan in their blockbuster T20 World Cup face-off. When all seemed lost at 31 for four in a stiff chase of 160 at the gargantuan Melbourne Cricket Ground, Kohli thought otherwise and spearheaded India to a remarkable four-wicket win with a knock that will go down as one of the best in the tournament's history. He found an able ally in star all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who contributed an invaluable 40 during a fifth-wicket stand of 113 runs. Not surprisingly, the 82 not out off 53 balls has been rated as his best knock.
'The King is back': Twitter flooded with messages on Virat Kohli's sensational knock vs Pakistan
Chasemaster Virat Kohli hit an explosive half-century as he single-handedly powered India to a stunning four-wicket win over arch-rivals Pakistan with a magnificent 53-ball 82 not out in their opening T20 World Cup game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday. Social media platform Twitter started flooding with congratulatory messages to 'King' Kohli as soon as India completed the victory.

Man of the Match India vs Pakistan today: Is Virat Kohli Man of the Match in India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup 2022 match?

Man of the Match India vs Pakistan: The former Indian captain played an unbelievable knock at the Melbourne Cricket Ground today.
During the 16th match of ICC T20 World Cup 2022 between India and Pakistan in Melbourne, India beat Pakistan by 4 wickets in a nerve-wracking finish.
Chasing a 160-run target, India were found wanting against the Pakistani new-ball bowlers yet again only to get reduced to 26/3 inside the powerplay. Although opening batters KL Rahul (4) and Rohit Sharma (4) had no clue whatsoever against the moving ball, Suryakumar Yadav (15) looked confident whilst hitting a couple of boundaries but couldn’t carry on for much long.
An experiment to promote all-rounder Axar Patel (2) to No. 5 failed as well leaving the onus on former captain Virat Kohli (82*) and all-rounder Hardik Pandya (40). The pair did most of the heavy lifting in the Indian innings in the form of a match-winning 113-run fifth-wicket partnership to put India in a commanding position at the Melbourne Cricket Stadium tonight.
Man of the Match India vs Pakistan today
Having said that, it wasn’t the most simplest of run-chases which can be explained in a couple of paragraphs in an instant story such as this. Kohli, who hit six fours and four sixes at a strike rate of 154.71, registered a match-winning 34th T20I half-century, 29th at No. 3, 11th in T20 World Cups, 10th at a neutral venue, sixth in Australia and fifth against Pakistan, under Sharma and in 2022.
Kohli, who had won a Player of the Match award after almost three years for scoring a century against Afghanistan during Asia Cup 2022, won another one tonight for a phenomenal innings. Kohli’s 14 T20I match award is also his fourth against this opposition and second at this venue.
“Well, it’s a surreal atmosphere. I honestly have no words. I have no idea how that happened. Hardik [Pandya] kept telling me, ‘Just believe, we can stay till the end’,” Kohli told the broadcaster during the post-match presentation ceremony.

Pakistan vs India: Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match rained off – as it happened
All the updates from the rained-off Asia Cup One-Day International between Pakistan and India in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
This blog is now closed. Thanks for joining us. These were the updates from the Asia Cup One-Day International cricket match between Pakistan and India on September 10, 2023.
- Rain forced a blockbuster clash between rivals India and Pakistan into a reserve day after just 24.1 overs of play in the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup.
- India will resume at 147-2 on Monday in the 50-over contest, after rain disrupted their innings following Pakistan’s decision to bowl first in Colombo.
- An extra day was a last-minute addition to the Super 4 clash – the only game to get the advantage other than the final – after a previous group meeting between the two teams was washed out due to rain at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Pallekele, Sri Lanka.
That’s a wrap
Massive frustration as rain has hit a second Pakistan vs India 2023 Asia Cup clash, but this Super 4 game will at least resume on Monday.
India batted first and racked up 147-2 in 24.1 overs. They will resume at that point at 3pm (09:30 GMT) on Monday.
Super soppers, sponges, electric fans and grass trimmings may have failed to save play the first time around, but the measures will hopefully protect the pitch for Monday’s resumption.
Thanks as ever for joining us, and we hope you return for our coverage on Monday.
Match called off, will resume tomorrow
The match has officially been called off.
It will resume at 3pm local time (09:30 GMT) on Monday and India will resume their innings where they left off.
The rain interrupted the innings at 24.1 overs, with India 147-2.
Play set to be called off at any minute
This is the rain that was forecast earlier in the day. Ground staff will now try to make sure the rain doesn’t cause any problems for tomorrow’s reserve day as it is pouring down now.
Play is likely to be called off any minute.
Covers back on
Ground staff, with their array of tools, make their way off the cricket pitch to loud cheers. Umpires make their way on.
But wait – the covers are coming back on.
It’s started to rain again.
India could play three days in a row
If the match does go to the reserve day, it would mean that India would play on three consecutive days. They face Sri Lanka in their second Super 4 match on Tuesday.
Not sure how Rohit Sharma’s men would feel about that.
But we’ve been told that there is a possibility of play resuming at 9pm (15:30 GMT) if the next pitch inspection goes well.
Another inspection at 8:30pm (15:00 GMT)
The umpires will have a third round of inspections at 8:30pm (15:00 GMT), which is in about 15 minutes.
Electric fans used to dry the damp patch
We now have three fans – the electric kind, not those from the stands – playing their part in Operation Match Resumption. They are fixed in a metal stand to dry up the patch in question.
Groundskeepers give grass trimmings a go
The latest tool used to prepare the ground for play is grass trimmings. Sacks of dry grass are being spread over the damp patches to try to make them safe for bowlers and fielders.
It is hard to tell if the umpires are erring on the side of caution or the option of having a reserve day is playing on their minds. Either way, we wait.
Troublesome muddy patch
The umpires are back inspecting that muddy patch. A bit of stomping, a quick walk and then a huddle.
Super sopper in race against time
Ground staff and umpires have surrounded a small patch of the ground where the super sopper is moving to and fro in a race against time to finish drying up the entire ground.
The area surrounding the pitch, especially in the path of the bowlers’ run-up, looks to be the cause of concern.
Second inspection at 8pm (14:30 GMT)
Looks like the umpires will inspect the pitch once again at 8pm (14:30 GMT), which is in about 10 minutes.
It’s been more than three hours since play was stopped.
Pitch inspection under way
The three umpires are now inspecting the pitch, tapping the surface with the tip of an umbrella. They are also seen having a word with the head groundsman.
After inspecting the pitch, the umpires are seen talking to India skipper Rohit and coach Dravid as well as Pakistan captain Babar and coach Grant Bradburn.
R Premadasa Stadium’s diverse neighbourhood
As we wait for the umpires to decide on the resumption of play, here’s a fun fact (or two!) about Khettarama, the lower-middle class neighbourhood 5km (3.1 miles) from downtown Colombo that is home to Sri Lanka’s biggest stadium.
Khettarama is steeped in religious history that binds Sri Lanka’s three main religions. It houses ancient Buddhist stupas and temples to which monks ferry across the Sebastian Canal to pray.
There are also historic Hindu temples in the area.
And present-day Khettarama is a densely populated Muslim-majority area that now surrounds the stadium on three sides.
It is common knowledge that whenever Pakistan plays at the RPS, most locals support the team in green.
The reasons are a history of affinity between the two nations but also because the Muslim locals have always connected with the Muslim Pakistani team.
Players keen to resume
Players and coaching staff look eager to get on with the game.
They have been walking around the ground, and now Indian head coach Rahul Dravid and Pakistan’s bowling coach Morne Morkel are undertaking inspections of their own.
Pitch inspection at 7:30pm, less than half an hour
The pitch inspection will take place at 7:30pm (14:00 GMT), which is in less than half an hour.
Remember, the match started losing overs since the clock struck 6:22pm, so it’ll be a shortened game if play resumes.
Umpires were seen talking to both captains, Rohit and Babar, while India’s head coach, Rahul Dravid, and Pakistan’s bowling Morne Morkel were seen talking to the administrators for an on-ground update.
Cheers as the pitch is uncovered
A loud cheer goes around the stadium as the pitch is uncovered. The crowd has been urging ground staff to get rid of the blue covers.
A mixed playlist of Indian and Pakistani songs has been the only entertainment in the past two hours.
Officials say an inspection is due in 30 minutes.
Umpires set to check the pitch
We are moving closer to a pitch inspection and a possible resumption of play.
Ground staff are preparing to remove the covers from the pitch to allow the umpires to conduct a check.
Two hours since match stopped
It’s been two hours since the match was stopped due to the downpour.
In case you missed it, India were 147-2 at 24.1 overs at the time of interruption with Kohli (8 not out) and Rahul (17 not out) on the field.
We are yet to hear about what’s next, but as things stand, the match will certainly be shortened if play resumes.
A 20-over chase can start as late as 10:36 pm (17:06 GMT).
Super soppers in action
Super soppers are out and most of the covers are off, but some of the pitch remains covered.
We could have an official update soon as the umpires are having a chat in the middle of the grounds.
Sponges in use – but no super soppers
Large rectangular sponges are being used to soak up water from the grass.
The super soppers remain parked, however. Perhaps there is not enough water to bring on the machines that are known to be the quickest at absorbing water from grounds.
We could be set for restricted overs
We will start losing overs if there is no resumption of play by 6:22pm, just 10 minutes from now.
The drizzle is not strong enough to induce fears of a washout but just enough to keep players off the field.
A classic example of cricket’s relationship with showers.
Some grass appears
Grass is back on display in the squares on either side of the wicket. Some ground staff members are on a walkabout and poke the grass in a few spots to check the state of the ground.
But still no confirmation from the match officials.

It’s been an hour since play was stopped due to rain in Colombo.
At the time of interruption, India were 147-2 at 24.1 overs, with Kohli (8 not out) and Rahul (17 not out) on the field.
Shadab dismissed opener Rohit for 56, while Gill was sent home for 58 by Afridi.
India were in good control of the match despite losing two wickets in successive overs.
Champions Trophy 2025: PCB Proposes Lahore As Sole Venue For All India Matches In ICC Event
The pakistan cricket board (pcb) has has picked gaddafi stadium in lahore as a potential venue for all team india matches for the champions trophy 2025 as per a report..
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has opted to propose Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore as a potential venue for all Team India matches for the Champions Trophy 2025 as per a Cricbuzz report. In the initial draft schedule submitted to the International Cricket Council (ICC), PCB identified Lahore, Karachi and Rawalpindi as the preferred venues for hosting the ICC event in February-March of the upcoming year. The ICC will solicit feedback from participating nations regarding these suggested venues and then move forward with the request.
The proposal to base India in one city seems to have been made to mitigate potential logistical and security challenges associated with their travel. Furthermore, selecting Lahore as the base, given its proximity to the Wagah border crossing between the two countries, offers Indian fans a comparatively more convenient option for visiting the matches.
17 Years Since Team India Visited Pakistan
Pakistan, as the defending champions of the Champions Trophy, secured victory over India in the final at The Oval, England in the last edition back in 2017. If held in Pakistan, it would mark the first time the country will have hosted the Champions Trophy. The competition was initially allotted to the country in 2008 but was relocated due to security concerns, with South Africa hosting it in 2009.
The Indian cricket team has not been to Pakistan for 17 years, since the Asia Cup in 2008 due to various factors, initially rising from security concerns and later worsened by diplomatic tensions between the governments of the two countries. During the Asia Cup held in September of 2023, the PCB, designated as the host, was made to adopt a hybrid model with venues in two countries. Consequently, India played their matches in Sri Lanka.
The confirmed teams for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy comprise Pakistan (hosts), South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Afghanistan, England and Bangladesh. However, India's participation is dependent upon approval from the Government of India. It will be interesting to see how they respond to this.

‘eight out of eight’ teams will visit pakistan for ct, says pcb chief mohsin.
KARACHI: Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi is confident that “eight of out eight” teams will visit the country when it hosts the ICC Champions Trophy early next year.
Despite the PCB chief’s optimism, whether India will make a trip across the border for the tournament, stays a question mark nevertheless, given the country’s government’s reluctance to send its cricket team to Pakistan due to sour political relations with its neighbours.
While India and Pakistan haven’t played bilateral cricket since 2012, they play each other in International Cricket Council’s tournaments. And Pakistan even visited India to participate in the 50-over World Cup last year.
Mohsin, while interacting with reporters here at the National Bank Stadium on Tuesday night, suggested that the draft schedule of the Champions Trophy that the PCB has shared with the ICC recently, mentions India playing their matches of the tournament in Pakistan only.
If the suggestion has to be believed, it is clear the PCB is not considering a hybrid model, which would see India play their matches outside Pakistan while all other teams feature within the country only.
Such a model was adopted during the Asia Cup, which was hosted by Pakistan last year. But it saw only four matches being staged in Pakistan, while the remaining games, including the final, were played in Sri Lanka.
The Champions Trophy, however, is an ICC event and demands different protocols. Therefore, the ball is in the global cricket governing body’s court and it needs to come up with an amicable solution.
An ICC delegation visiting Pakistan in March, followed by the PCB sharing a draft schedule with it can be counted as positive developments for the board.
Pakistan missed out on hosting the 2009 Champions Trophy and co-hosting the 2011 ICC World Cup due to security reasons, but that situation won’t come into question in the current scenario with the country having hosted high profile teams like Australia, England and New Zealand for full-fledged tours in the last three years.
That the PCB’s security consultant and that of the ICC is the same, also consolidates Pakistan’s position.
However, recent unofficial media reports in India have suggested that the country will stick to its stance of not sending its team to Pakistan.
Mohsin was upbeat Pakistan would prepare venues in Lahore, Karachi and Rawalpindi in time for the Champions Trophy, which is scheduled to be held in February next year.
The PCB chief said the board has contacted international companies which will turn National Bank Stadium, the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore and the Pindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi into modernly designed arenas with enhanced viewing experience.

Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan break Pakistan's World Cup jinx against India with 10-wicket romp
Shaheen Shah Afridi set the tone for the night with a fiery opening spell in which he claimed both India openers
9.47pm And that brings us to the close of our coverage tonight! What quality Pakistan served up today. You can tell this win means a whole deal more given the bilateral series that they lost in the lead-up. There was a statement to be made, and they did it; all while looking like it might not even have been on their minds. Big night for them and they thoroughly outclassed an insipid India who have plenty to ponder. We hope you enjoyed being here and we'll see you soon. On behalf of Karthik and Raghav, this is Varun saying good night.
Babar Azam: We executed our plans well and the early wickets were very helpful. Shaheen's wickets gave us a lot of confidence and the spinners dominated as well. The plan with Rizwan is always to keep it simple. We tried to get deep in the crease and from about the 8th over the dew came in and the ball came on nicely. This is just the start, we have confidence to build on now. It will remain match by match for us. The pressure on us wasn't that much - we weren't thinking of the record against India at all. I only wanted to back all our players who've been preparing well. When you play tournaments before a big World Cup, it helps and our players came in with a lot of confidence because of that.
Virat Kohli: We did not execute the things that we wanted to but credit is certainly due - they outplayed us today. When you lose three early it's very difficult to come back, especially when you know the dew is coming. They were very professional with the bat as well. Hitting through the line was not as easy in the first half as it seemed in the Pakistan innings, so when you know the conditions can change, you need 10-20 extra runs. But some quality bowling from Pakistan didn't let us get off the blocks. [Team] we're certainly not a team that presses the panic button, it's the start of the tournament, not the end.
Shaheen Afridi: This is the first time we've beaten India and I feel proud. I knew it would be good for us if I got early wickets and that worked out. My idea was to get as much swing as possible. You don't get a lot here, but I wanted to get those breakthroughs and gave it 100%. In my opinion the new ball was a difficult to play, so credit goes to Babar and Rizwan. All the teams are difficult at the World Cup, we'll try to take this momentum forward and make the final.
Shaheen Afridi is the Player of the Match.
Kishore Kumar C: "If people simply throw everything on dew then we should simply give them the match after loosing the toss. It's funny, people not talking about our bowlers inability. " UmarFM: "Started watching cricket in the 2011 WC. Waited 10 long years for Pakistan to win. What a fine fine moment, no words to explain!" Pavan: "Watch out for the composed Babar. A great batsman made but a greater captain in the making. He shouts at the team not to over-do the celebration. He moves away after one selfie!! I have only admiration for him" Samip Dahal: "This win from Pakistan is not just an eye opener for India. It is their statement to rest of the teams as well about what is about to come." Kathia: "Fireworks and Celebratory Firings going on in Lahore. Typica Punjabi style to celebrate things. Well done guys. Defeated India First time in Worldcups, Defeated someone for first time with 10 wickets and many more records formed Today" Asif Khan: "Don't you stay inside if you are in Karachi.. The streets are absolutely lit with celebrations right now!!" Siddhesh: "As an Indian fan it is not the loss that rankles but the manner in which it happened where India as a bowling unit just seemed bereft of ideas and seemed to lack (if I may use the dreaded word) intent. Sure the wicket was a lot easier to bat on in the 2nd half but Pakistan made it seem like a batting paradise. " Yaqoob: "The boys didn't just stun India. They stunned everyone back home too. You should hear the roaring and fireworks in Islamabad right now!"
9.29pm Like everything else, it had to end. India had never lost a World Cup game, 50-overs or T20, to Pakistan, and even the individual results had gotten painfully one-sided in recent years. But now Pakistan have broken that duck, and they've done it brilliantly. This isn't just a win over an arch-rival in a big tournament, it's also a win that signals that they're contenders for the title. It helped them that they won the toss and chased, but to do it in the manner they have has been quite something. While I go catch my breath, here's Varun to bring you the presentation. Good night!
fullish on off stump, clipped to the right of long-on, and that's it, Pakistan have handed their first-ever 10-wicket defeat in T20Is. And they've ended a long, winless run against India in World Cups, stretching all the way back to 1992. And Babar and Rizwan complete it in a way that sums up their partnership. Into the gap, and they quickly sprint two to complete the job
We have word from BCCI: "Hardik Pandya was hit on his right shoulder while batting. He has now gone for scans."
full on off stump, clipped quietly down to long-on
short, chest-high ball on off stump, and this is stunning. This wasn't an easy ball to put away, but he manages to get on top of the bounce, roll his wrists over, and beat deep square leg to his right with the pull
superb. Fullish outside off, and Rizwan steps across and swipes it away to the left of midwicket, and easily beats long-on to his right
Clearly a ball that owed a lot to dew. It's not been easy for India's bowlers to try and defend this.
Nope. That's not going to win any games. Full-toss at the hip, and Rizwan steps across and whips it away over the backward square leg boundary. Not a no-ball, but close
Pakistan need 17 off 18 now. Can someone bowl a 2-run over and inject some tension into this chase? Shami comes back on.
VS: "The way Kohli has utilized Bumrah is horrible. With a below par total, the only chance you have is to squeeze them in the powerplay and get into their brains. One you let them exit powerplay with a decent run rate and all wickets in hand, chasing a modest total, they can play with a calm head through the middle overs." -- You can understand why Kohli went the way he did, though. Try and keep the runs down, and then have Bumrah squeeze them in the second half of the chase. Didn't come off, but it's a valid strategy.
wide length ball, hugging the tramline once again. Not called wide this time after Babar leaves it, and he doesn't look pleased
back of a length outside off, opens up at the hip and flat-bats to the right of long-off. Not too much distance for the fielder to cover, but they whizz through for two anyway
playing with that off-side tramline again. Full, not quite a yorker, left alone, and it's called wide. Seemed to nip away off the pitch and end up just outside the tramline
full outside off, driven to long-off with a bottom-handed flourish
Harish: "Indians will be thinking: It had to end one day "
slower ball wide of off stump. Rizwan has a massive swing at it and misses, and this time it's adjudged wide
wide yorker, and Rizwan misses the reach-out-and-slash
stays back to a length ball on off stump, clears his front leg, and flat-bats towards long-on
shortish outside off, reaches out and slaps it towards sweeper cover, who's quite square
Bhuvneshwar back in the attack. Fine leg and short third in the circle.
DBSS : "On a positive note, India have 1 week to omit this match from their memories and start afresh. Just not their day. Have to appreciate the exceptional cricket played by Pakistan today. "
Ashish: "@KK - nothing wicket taking in India's arsenal, seriously? I will attribute it to dew and good batting equally. The dew made its presence in the powerplay itself. And the pak batters made good use of it. I will still give credit to Pakistan. Shaheen bowled well but then fact is the ball was dry and there was a bit of swing and he placed it in good areas. His last over was a contradiction to his first three. So two sides of the coin."
in the blockhole on off stump, jammed back to the bowler
quickish, on the fuller side of a length, nipping in to hit the pad after Rizwan misses the flick. Going down leg, so there's no appeal, and they sneak a leg bye into the cover region
looks for the off-stump yorker, doesn't quite get it full enough. Gets his front leg out of the way and clips through square leg
full, angling in towards off stump, clipped to long-on
full, just outside off, clipped towards midwicket
With that, Pakistan need less than a run a ball.
short, gets up around the hip, and Rizwan plays a short-arm whip to easily beat deep square leg to his right
Here's Shami.
Shafiq: "Is there any dew effect or is it some brilliant batting by these two?" -- A bit of both, mostly the latter. Plus there hasn't been a Shaheen among India's bowlers today. Nothing obviously wicket-taking in their arsenal.
hadi: "what anticlimax. We all thought this would be a thriller. But this is turning out to be a 10 wicker drubbing. WOuld'nt have imagined in wildest dreams against tournaments favourites!"
shortish offcutter outside off, jumps across to chop into the backward point region
Over 18 • PAK 152/0
