Numerous University of Maryland programs garnered accolades in U.S. News & World Report’ s 2023-24 Best Graduate Schools lists released today, with 53 top-25 rankings in overall and specialty categories.

Combined with the previous university-wide and 17 undergraduate program rankings in U.S. News ’ 2022-23 Best Colleges , UMD has 70 schools, colleges, programs and specialties on the publication’s top 25 lists, which are widely used by prospective students when considering where to apply to school.

“At the University of Maryland, we are committed to providing our graduate students with a world-class advanced education, opportunities for research and top-ranked professional programs,” said President Darryll J. Pines. “The rankings announced today are a testament to the exceptional work of our faculty, staff and students, who exude excellence and drive our university fearlessly forward."

The rankings are based on statistical surveys of more than 2,200 programs and reputation surveys sent to nearly 19,000 academics and professionals, conducted in fall 2022 and early 2023. U.S. News said this year that it placed a greater emphasis this year on outcomes, recognizing that students’ ultimate goal in attending graduate school is likely to become a practicing professional.

The magazine each year ranks graduate programs in education, engineering, business (MBA), law, medicine and nursing, along with a rotating selection of specialty schools and programs.

In terms of overall placement, the A. James Clark School of Engineering was No. 19 and the School of Public Policy was No. 25, rising 10 places among public affairs schools since last year. The College of Education is ranked No. 27, moving up in nearly every program, while the School of Public Health was ranked No. 28.

For specific programs, the highlights this year include:

  • The Robert H. Smith School of Business’ information systems program at No. 11 and part-time MBA at No. 21 (a jump from No. 25 last year);
  • The College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences at No. 17 for computer science (No. 15 for artificial intelligence, No. 20 for programming language, No. 22 for computer science systems), No. 17 for physics (No. 6 for atomic/molecular/optical physics, No. 9 for quantum physics and No. 17 for condensed matter physics) and a six-spot rise to No. 20 for mathematics (No. 15 for applied mathematics and No. 24 for mathematical analysis);
  • The College of Education’s counseling and personnel services program—a joint program with BSOS’ Department of Psychology—at No. 1, education psychology at No. 6, higher education administration at No. 11, special education at No. 11, elementary education at No. 14, curriculum and instruction at No. 17, education policy at No. 17, secondary teacher education at No. 17, and education administration and supervision at No. 24;

  • The School of Public Policy’s homeland/national security program at No. 4 and public finance and budgeting at No. 14; and
  • The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources’ Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine program (a partnership between UMD and Virginia Tech), ranked No. 19.

Since U.S. News doesn’t rank all graduate programs annually, other current honors for UMD from previous editions include:

  • The College of Arts and Humanities’ program in American literature before 1865 at No. 12 in 2022;
  • The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences’ criminology at No. 1 in 2022, audiology program at No. 10 in 2021, sociology of population at No. 14 in 2022, speech-language pathology at No. 16 in 2021, economics at No. 22 in 2023 and sociology at No. 24 in 2022;
  • The Smith School was ranked No. 12 overall for online MBA programs earlier in 2023, in addition to online marketing at No. 6, online MBA business analytics program at No. 8; online MBA programs for veterans at No. 10 and online general management at No. 11; online masters in business programs (excluding MBA) at No. 16;

YSM Ranks #1 in U.S. News Survey for Psychiatry

Yale School of Medicine ranked #1 for psychiatry programs in the 2022 U.S. News Best Graduate Schools rankings released March 30.

U.S. News annually ranks medical schools and other programs to help students decide where to attend school. It also ranks specialties, and this year Yale School of Medicine was ranked the top medical school nationally for psychiatry.

Psychiatry at Yale has long been rated a top specialty by several national ranking agencies. Last year the Yale Department of Psychiatry Residency Program ranked second nationally in research and third in reputation in Doximity’s 2020-21 Residency Navigator program.

In a separate rating, U.S. News ranked Yale New Haven Hospital Behavioral Health Services among the top 10 hospitals for psychiatry in its 2020-21 Best Hospitals Rankings. The Yale Department of Psychiatry topped all U.S. medical schools in grant funding for psychiatric research from the National Institutes of Health, according to the recent Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research survey.

A Personal Plea to Premeds

Trisha Kaundinya | January 13, 2021

When I was in college, I was in a premed “bubble” a lot of the time. I took many of my courses and labs alongside hundreds of other aspiring physicians. I would see the same people throughout my academic day, and sometimes even outside of the lecture hall. Because of this, I unintentionally overheard conversations […]

Is an MD/PhD Program Right for You?

MD-PhD programs may be right for you if you are interested in a career path that melds both clinical practice and in-depth scientific research. MD-PhD graduates aren’t simply doctors; they are “physician-scientists” or “medical scientists.”

MD-PhD programs offer a dual-degree track that combines the clinical training of a standard MD degree with the added coursework of a PhD. The PhD training is particularly rigorous and includes classes usually in the realm of biomedical sciences, as well as advanced research training, lab rotations, and intensive investigative work.

The payoff for choosing an MD-PhD program is that these clinical medicine graduates are equipped to treat patients while also participating in the discovery and development of innovative healthcare solutions.

Here are a few reasons you might want to pursue an MD/PhD career:

  • You want to participate in cutting-edge medical research.
  • You want career options beyond clinical medical practice.
  • You want to help train future generations of medical doctors.
  • You want more collaborative research opportunities with colleagues.
  • You want funding opportunities only available to MD/PhD students.

The Difference Between MD & MD/PhD

The difference between MD and MD-PhD is that graduates with an MD-PhD receive PhD training and hold a PhD degree in addition to their MD degree.

The cost of an MD-PhD program varies widely depending on the institution. Still, the stipend and tuition-free training make many of these programs significantly less financially burdensome compared to standalone MD or PhD programs.

MD/PhD students will complete graduate school and medical school qualified to hold positions in academic medicine and biomedical research (in addition to being qualified to practice clinical medicine.

What Is an MD?

A medical doctor has earned a standard medical degree or MD and is skilled to practice clinical medicine. Medical students must complete 4 years of medical school to earn their degree, followed by 3-7 years of residency and fellowship training to practice medicine.

What Is a PhD?

PhD stands for Doctor of Philosophy in reference to their critical knowledge and research experience in a particular field of study. A PhD is the highest possible academic degree.

Earning a PhD is often considered harder than earning an MD due to the scientific research required to stimulate original thought and develop quality hypotheses.

How Competitive Are MD/PhD Programs?

Physician-scientist programs are slightly more selective and competitive than the average medical program.

Between 2018 and 2023, a little more than one-third of students who applied to an MD/PhD program (37.7%) were accepted. The acceptance rate for medical school applicants in general was 41.2% for the 2022-23 application cycle.

The test scores of these programs also indicate how much more competitive these programs are. The average MCAT score of MD/PhD matriculants in the 2022-23 cycle was 516.2, and their mean GPA was 3.82. In comparison, medical school matriculants overall had an average MCAT score of 511.9 and average GPA of 3.75 during the same cycle.

How Long Are MD/PhD Programs?

The MD-PhD dual degree takes approximately 7-8 years of coursework to complete, followed by an additional 3-7 years of residency to be eligible to practice medicine.

Generally, MD coursework is emphasized in years 1-2, followed by research training in years 3-5, and ending with medical training and clinicals in years 6-8.

Requirements for MD/PhD Applicants

If you are considering applying to an MD/PhD program , know that having strong essays and letters is more important than incrementally higher MCAT test scores and GPAs. Numbers get your foot in the door; storytelling gets you a seat at the table.

In general, the requirements for MD/PhD applicants include:

  • MCAT score in the 90th percentile: Specific MCAT requirements for MD/PhD programs vary by school. However, in general, most students have the best chance at success with an MCAT score in the 90th percentile or higher. In the 2022-23 application cycle, MD/PhD applicants had an average MCAT score of 511.3, while matriculants averaged 516.2.
  • GPA of 3.7 or higher: Like MCAT scores, the GPA requirements for MD/PhD programs differ by program. But your chances are highest with an average GPA of at least 3.7. In the 2022-23 application cycle, MD/PhD applicants averaged a science GPA of 3.61 and overall GPA of 3.68, while matriculants averaged a 3.78 science GPA and 3.82 overall.
  • Compelling personal statement: Your personal statement essay should explain why you want to become a physician and is required for both MD & MD/PhD applications . All prospective doctors must write a personal statement that stands out, and this is doubly true for MD/PhD applicants.
  • 2 additional essays: You’ll write one essay conveying your personal interest in pursuing an MD/PhD dual degree specifically, and one essay covering your substantive experiences in the field of research . These may include multiple summer projects, senior thesis research, or 1+ years of post-undergrad research programs and activities.
  • 2-3 letters from research mentors who can praise your scientific potential.
  • 1-2 letters from clinical mentors who know your aptitude for patient care.
  • 1 letter from the premed committee.
  • 1 letter from a mentor who can discuss your leadership skills and personal traits in an extracurricular setting.

Questions to Ask Yourself When Considering an MD/PhD Program

By answering these questions, you can choose the graduate program that is the best fit for you over the next 8 years.

  • What skills do you want to develop? Choose a program that has ample opportunities to explore your field of interest and in which you can identify potential mentors for rotations and thesis projects.
  • What is your preferred MD/PhD program size? Choose a smaller program of MD-PhD students if you prefer hands-on guidance with individualized attention and a larger program if you prefer a larger community with more networking opportunities.
  • Where do you want to live for 8 years of medical school ? Choose a location that fits your needs for cost of living, housing, transportation, extracurriculars, as well as opportunities for fun and making friends.
  • Does the program offer financial aid? Choose a program that meets your financial needs in the form of stipends and tuition waivers. It’s important to note that if you drop out of an MD-PhD program, some schools require you to pay back the investment that the school made in you.
  • Will you fit into the school’s culture? Choose a program after you’ve visited the campus, talked with the current students and faculty, and asked about opportunities in your field of interest as well as other’s experiences at the school and living in the city.
  • Does the MD/PhD Program align with your timeline? Choose a program with coursework that allows you to graduate in your preferred timeline, which could be sooner or longer than eight years.

Possible Career Paths for MD/PhD Graduates

A career choice often depends on an individual’s specific interests, such as which medical specialties they are drawn to, whether they prefer working with patients or in a laboratory, and how they want to contribute to advancing medical science.

The salary range for MD/PhD graduates varies significantly by position and type of work. Policy analysts’ starting salary is around $57,000 per year, while attending physicians who do research can make upwards of $500,000.

Below are careers someone with an MD-PhD might pursue:

Attending Physician with Research Responsibilities

An MD/PhD holder in this position would have a traditional medical role seeing and treating patients, but they might also have dedicated time for research. This role allows one to continue practicing medicine while contributing to academic or clinical research.

Individuals in this role often split their time among patient care, research activities, and instructional duties. Typically, they are found in educational hospitals or medical schools.

Physicians’ salaries can vary significantly based on specialty and experience, but generally, they are well-compensated. An attending physician in a specialized field can expect to earn upwards of $200,000 to $500,000 or more, especially if they have dual responsibilities that include research.

The MD/PhD Application Process

The application process for MD-PhD programs is similar to that of typical MD programs. The two major differences are that you’ll designate yourself as an MD/PhD candidate on the AMCAS application, and you’ll submit 2 additional essays on that primary.

The Application Timeline

  • AMCAS (submit by end of May): You’ll fill out a primary application through AMCAS in the spring of the first year of your application cycle (e.g., to matriculate in fall 2026, you’ll submit AMCAS in spring 2025). AMCAS opens at the end of May each year. Aim to submit the primary application no later than the end of June, as early applications are more likely to be reviewed and accepted.
  • Secondaries (submit by end of August): You’ll respond to secondary applications in the summer after your primary application is reviewed by each school you submitted it to. Each program sends secondary applications to students who generally meet their minimum requirements.
  • Interviews (October-March): You’ll then attend interviews as invited between October and March. Some schools won’t contact you at all to reject your application; others will offer conflicting invites. You must prioritize your options and prepare for the opportunities that do come.
  • Final decisions (December-March): Final decisions are made by schools between December and March. Schools with a rolling admissions cycle (most of them) accept students after completing interviews and determining a student is a fit. A smaller number of programs wait to send acceptances until after all interviews are complete.
  • Choose your program (March-April): Students choose where to matriculate between March and April.
  • Programs start (June-August): Programs begin between June and August, depending on the school.

How to Prepare for an MD/PhD interview

You should prepare for your MD/PhD interview by practicing mock interviews to rid yourself of the jitters and fine-tune your responses in various scenarios. In addition to developing your personal narrative, you must be able to explain your research training at multiple levels.

If you’re interested in participating in a mock interview with a physician who has served on an admissions committee, consider a mock interview with MedSchoolCoach .

What to Do if You Get Waitlisted

Finding out that you’ve been waitlisted for the MD/PhD program of your dreams is never a good feeling. However, you are not helpless in the wait. It’s a good idea to remain in contact with program leaders and administrators by sending a Letter of Intent or a Letter of Interest.

Listen: An MD/PHD’s Journey to Medicine [PODCAST]

What is a Letter of Intent vs. a Letter of Interest?

A Letter of Intent is a formal statement that you would commit to matriculating into a program if you are accepted. A Letter of Interest conveys that you are strongly interested in the program, but it does not indicate any commitment or explicitly state that a program is your first choice.

Both letters should summarize why you believe the program and school are a great fit for your interests and how you will be able to uniquely contribute to the school, in under one page.

Finding Out You’ve Been Accepted!

The day you receive that phone call or email — the one from the MD-PhD program director contacting you to say you have officially been offered acceptance into their program — provides a feeling of joy worth being patient for!

Our Physician Advisors can support you through the application process for your best shot at getting into the school of your choice.

What specialties can MD/PhD graduates earn their PhD in?

PhD students commonly choose to specialize in topics such as:

  • Cell Biology
  • Biochemistry
  • Pharmacology
  • Neuroscience
  • Biomedical Engineering

What is the salary range for an MD/PhD graduate?

MD/PhD graduates can expect an average annual salary of about $100K, depending on the type of work and place of employment.

What is the difference between a PhD and a Postdoctorate?

A Postdoctoral Fellowship is a temporary period of mentorship and research training for graduates with doctoral degrees, offered by the National Institutes of Health, to acquire skills needed for a chosen career. A PhD thesis must be successfully defended, whereas a postdoc is a non-defendable temporary employment assignment from an organization such as a university.

Can an MD/PhD be a doctor?

Graduates who earn an MD/PhD are fully qualified doctors and may practice medicine in a clinical setting upon completing their residency training.

Can an MD/PhD graduate be a surgeon?

While an MD/PhD graduate CAN be a surgeon if they choose surgery specialties in their residency programs, a surgical resident is not required to obtain a PhD in addition to their MD.

Dozens of Specialties Placed in Top 25 Nationwide

Scores of University of Maryland programs earned accolades in  U.S. News & World Report ’s 2023 Best Graduate Schools lists released today, with 56 top-25 rankings in overall and specialty categories.

Combined with the previous university-wide and 14 undergraduate program rankings in  U.S. News ’  2022 Best Colleges , UMD now has 74 schools, colleges, programs and specialties on the publication’s top 25 lists, which are widely used by prospective students when considering where to apply to school.

The magazine each year ranks graduate programs in education, engineering, business (MBA), law, medicine and nursing, along with a rotating selection of specialty schools and programs.

This year’s group also included social work; doctoral program rankings in economics, psychology, math, statistics, biological sciences, computer science, chemistry and earth sciences; and a first-ever ranking of doctoral programs in biostatistics. Rankings in public affairs and public health schools and programs were updated as well.

UMSON Rises in All Ranking Categories in Latest ‘U.S. News’ Best Graduate Schools

md phd programs rankings u.s. news

Baltimore, Md. – Continuing its mission of shaping the nursing profession and the health care environment by developing leaders in education, research, and practice, the University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON) has once again ranked in the top 10 across the board for public schools of nursing – and moved up in all six categories in which the school is ranked – in the newly released 2024 edition of U.S. News & World Report ’s “ America’s Best Graduate Schools ,” out of 651 accredited nursing school surveyed.

Both UMSON’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and its Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) programs climbed in the rankings among all schools surveyed, DNP tied at No. 8 (up from No. 15 last year) and MSN at No. 20 overall (up from 25 last year) . Among public schools of nursing, the DNP program is tied at No. 4 and the MSN is ranked No. 9.

Two UMSON specialties lead the way in the rankings, both ranked No. 1 (tied) nationwide among public schools of nursing: •    the DNP Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner specialty, tied at No. 4  among all ranked schools •    The MSN Health Services Leadership and Management specialty, No. 2 among all ranked schools.

UMSON is also ranked in the top 10 among public schools of nursing for its: •     Family Nurse Practitioner Doctor of Nursing Practice specialty (No. 3) •     DNP Nurse Anesthesia specialty (No. 7, tied)

“It is gratifying to continue to be recognized nationally for our Doctor of Nursing Practice program and our Master of Science in Nursing program,” said Yolanda Ogbolu, PhD, NNP, FNAP, FAAN, the Bill and Joanne Conway Dean of the University of Maryland School of Nursing. “The School of Nursing plays a vital role in our collective efforts in Maryland and nationally to increase the number of nurses with advanced education, particularly at the doctoral level. It is essential that we have nurses who are well prepared to meet the changing needs of patients, their families, and our communities at a time when we face increasing complexity in our health care system, growing diversity in our population, and persistent gaps in access to needed care.”

The U.S. News & World Report rankings are based on a variety of indicators, including student selectivity and program size, faculty resources, and research activity, and on survey data from deans of schools of nursing that are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing. In fall 2023 and early 2024, U.S. News surveyed 651 nursing schools with master’s or doctoral programs. In total, 292 nursing programs responded to the survey. Of those, 216 provided enough data to be included in the rankings of nursing master’s programs and 188 provided enough data to be eligible for inclusion in the ranking of DNP programs. Many institutions were ranked in both, using overlapping data.

The University of Maryland School of Nursing, founded in 1889, is one of the oldest and largest nursing schools in the nation and is ranked among the top nursing schools nationwide. Enrolling nearly 2,000 students in its baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral programs, the School develops leaders who shape the profession of nursing and impact the health care environment.

What Premed Students Should Know About Emerging Fields of Medical Research

Aspiring physician-scientists should bone up on areas such as gene editing, nanotechnology and regenerative medicine.

Premeds and Emerging Medical Research

If you find a field that interests you, don't hesitate to join a like-minded laboratory while training.

Premedical students aspiring to become physician-scientists will be tasked with navigating emerging fields in research and translating exciting discoveries into the clinical realm. Understanding the latest trends and breakthroughs in biomedical science is paramount for those hoping to bridge the gap between such cutting-edge research and clinical practice – a career goal for many aspiring physician-scientists.

What are these emerging fields, what should aspiring physician-scientists – including those applying to combined M.D.-Ph.D. programs – know about getting involved in these fields, and are there any pitfalls?

This is an extraordinarily exciting time in scientific research, with recent breakthroughs in diverse fields such as gene editing, immunotherapies, nanotechnology, precision medicine, machine learning and regenerative medicine. Highlights run the gamut of the biomedical spectrum, including evolutionary genomics, novel neurotechnology, advances in cardiovascular imaging, cell-based therapies and therapeutic manipulation of the microbiome, to name a few.

Aspiring physician-scientists will undoubtedly be tempted to ride this wave of exciting discoveries and join laboratories moving the needle in these fields, many of which are still in their infancy.

Premed students should be aware of these emerging fields, as these advances are expected to contribute increasingly to health care throughout the coming decades and will undoubtedly remain important for the duration of a lengthy career in medicine .

These fields are likely to hold long-term career opportunities for students interested in biomedical research. They also represent opportunities to contribute to innovation, be involved in groundbreaking discoveries and help shape the future of science and medicine.

Many emerging fields are exciting in part due to new or newly appreciated applications to clinical practice, with direct implications for patient care . By understanding these emerging fields, premed students will remain informed and up to date regarding novel treatment paradigms, new diagnostic tools and different preventive strategies that could benefit their future patients.

Students’ research interests often evolve during undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate education. Many fascinating fields of biomedical science are neither new nor well known, and they deserve serious consideration. You will have multiple opportunities to change fields should your interests diverge at any point, so you should not feel locked in to the discipline of your first research experience.

However, if you do have a genuine intellectual interest in a popular scientific field at an early phase of training, don’t hesitate to join such a like-minded laboratory.

Finding a Laboratory in Emerging Research Fields

If you are a premed student interested in an exciting field like cancer immunotherapy, genomics, AI-enabled precision medicine , etc., you may struggle to understand which laboratories would be appropriate and rewarding to join and a good fit for your career goals.

To start, assess the research landscape at your home institution through departmental web pages and note which faculty in your field of interest are involved in active research projects. Get in touch with a few faculty members and discuss the possibility of joining their laboratory.

As you learn about their research projects, you can also ask if they know of other labs in the same field that may also be of interest. Often, research faculty themselves are the best resource for understanding the current research landscape of the university, as departmental web pages and related resources can be out of date.

Departmental administrators or undergraduate research coordinators may also be quite helpful in finding a lab in a specific area that would be a good fit for an undergraduate student. If you read a lay press article – especially from a local publication – about an area of exciting, “hot” science, pay attention to which studies and researchers they reference or quote. These investigators are often leading voices in the field.

Use PubMed to find the latest work in a field or by a specific investigator. Explore the "trending articles" section to see which articles have had recent activity – a sign of a field gaining broad interest. If you find investigators doing work that is particularly interesting to you, use the "saved searches" function to get updates about their work directly in your email inbox.

Appreciate that emerging fields are often a result of novel collaboration across disparate disciplines such as distinct subfields in biology and medicine, biomedical engineering or computer science .

Application of a known technology to a new field can also yield exciting advancements. A recent example is cryo-EM-mediated determination of complex structures, such as ligand-bound receptors, which could not previously be accurately determined.

Look for labs that are working in an interdisciplinary manner to tackle an important question in medicine or biology, and you are likely to find stimulating research in an important emerging field.

Pitfalls to Avoid

Avoid presuming that only well-known fields with significant popularity and press attention are the only interesting domains of scientific research. The biggest discoveries often come from unpredictable places, and their genesis can be traced to less well-known fields.

Recent high-profile examples include prokaryotic genomics that spawned CRISPR/Cas9-based gene editing, and nucleoside modifications that advanced mRNA vaccines. This is characteristic of biomedical research and should lead you to explore various fields and meet with a variety of investigators to find the field, research and lab that most interest you.

A few exceedingly popular fields – such as microbiome research, cancer immunotherapy , etc. – run the risk of becoming oversaturated, with many excellent investigators trying to solve similar problems. These fields can thus become quite competitive, with several associated challenges.

If you do join a competitive field, look for opportunities to do novel work that can separate your project from the rest of the crowd. A good strategy when selecting a laboratory is to assess which researchers are pushing the boundaries in these fields and are looking to incorporate interdisciplinary approaches, as they are more likely to be working in their own lane, away from other investigators. Use the same approach when selecting a project within your lab.

“We are proud, as always, of the achievements of the students and staff of our high schools,” BCPS Superintendent Myriam Rogers said in a press release . “We are especially pleased this year to see so many of our schools rise in the U.S. News & World Report rankings. We celebrate these results while we continue working to ensure that all our students are learning and growing at schools that are the best in Maryland and the nation.”

About 39 percent of Maryland high schools were ranked in the top 25 percent nationwide . That's the fourth-highest ratio in the country behind only Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Jersey.

The top high schools have students who score exceptionally high on math, reading and science assessments. They also have strong performance among under-served students. High school graduation rates and college readiness among graduates are also measured.

For the 13th year in a row, Harvard University has been ranked as the world’s leading university by the Center for World University Rankings . Now in its thirteenth year of providing such rankings, the 2024 CWUR lists the top 2000 universities out of 20,966 institutions evaluated across the globe.

This year, the global top-10 was as follows:

1. Harvard University

2. Massachusetts Institute of Technology

3. Stanford University

4. University of Cambridge

5. University of Oxford

6. Princeton University

7. Columbia University

8. University of Pennsylvania

9. Yale University

10. California Institute of Technology

This marks the sixth year in a row that Harvard, MIT and Stanford have taken the first three spots in that order. In CWUR’s 2018-19 rankings, Harvard ranked first, with Stanford taking second and MIT in third place.

Of the top ten universities for 2024, eight were in the U.S. the other two were British institutions — the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford.

Rounding out the top-25 universities were:

11.University of Chicago

12.University of California, Berkeley

13.University of Tokyo

14.Cornell University

15.Northwestern University

16.University of Michigan

17.University of California, Los Angeles

18.Johns Hopkins University

19.PSL University (France)

20.University College London

21.Duke University

22.University of Illinois

23.University of Tornoto

24.New York University

25.University of Washington

Methodology

CWUR evaluates universities on these four factors:

Education is based on the academic success of a university’s alumni, measured relative to the university's size (25%)

Employability is determined by the professional success of a university’s alumni, measured relative to the university's size (25%)

Faculty is measured by the number of faculty members earning top academic distinctions (10%)

Research is based on a composite of four indicators:

i) Research Output — the total number of research papers (10%);

ii) High-Quality Publications — the number of research papers appearing in top-tier journals (10%);

iii) Influence — the number of research papers appearing in highly-influential journals (10%);

iv) Citations — the number of highly-cited research papers (10%).

National Comparisons

The U.S. had the most universities in the top 2000 with 329; 19 of the top 25 universities were in the U.S., and all eight of the institutions in the Ivy League placed in the top 70. China had 324 institutions in the top 2000, and Japan had 110 top-2000 institutions.

There were 92 institutions in the United Kingdom among the top 2000 schools, led by the University of Cambridge, which was judged to be the top public university in the world for the 11th year in a row. France had 73 representatives in the top 2000, while Russia had 46 institutions.

The news comes at a good time for U.S. universities, which have recently been rocked by charges of antisemitism and Islamophobia, prolonged campus demonstrations over the war in Gaza, enrollment declines, and waning public confidence.

Because of a methodology that relies on quantitative indictors and that emphasizes research, CWUR’s rankings may be less subject to shifts in opinions about reputation sampled in other ranking systems. In addition, the numbers it calculates have considerable lag built into them so even those factors that might reflect public opinion, like graduates’ employability, are unlikely to reflect current attitudes.
