11.4 The Business Plan

Learning objectives.

By the end of this section, you will be able to:

  • Describe the different purposes of a business plan
  • Describe and develop the components of a brief business plan
  • Describe and develop the components of a full business plan

Unlike the brief or lean formats introduced so far, the business plan is a formal document used for the long-range planning of a company’s operation. It typically includes background information, financial information, and a summary of the business. Investors nearly always request a formal business plan because it is an integral part of their evaluation of whether to invest in a company. Although nothing in business is permanent, a business plan typically has components that are more “set in stone” than a business model canvas , which is more commonly used as a first step in the planning process and throughout the early stages of a nascent business. A business plan is likely to describe the business and industry, market strategies, sales potential, and competitive analysis, as well as the company’s long-term goals and objectives. An in-depth formal business plan would follow at later stages after various iterations to business model canvases. The business plan usually projects financial data over a three-year period and is typically required by banks or other investors to secure funding. The business plan is a roadmap for the company to follow over multiple years.

Some entrepreneurs prefer to use the canvas process instead of the business plan, whereas others use a shorter version of the business plan, submitting it to investors after several iterations. There are also entrepreneurs who use the business plan earlier in the entrepreneurial process, either preceding or concurrently with a canvas. For instance, Chris Guillebeau has a one-page business plan template in his book The $100 Startup . 48 His version is basically an extension of a napkin sketch without the detail of a full business plan. As you progress, you can also consider a brief business plan (about two pages)—if you want to support a rapid business launch—and/or a standard business plan.

As with many aspects of entrepreneurship, there are no clear hard and fast rules to achieving entrepreneurial success. You may encounter different people who want different things (canvas, summary, full business plan), and you also have flexibility in following whatever tool works best for you. Like the canvas, the various versions of the business plan are tools that will aid you in your entrepreneurial endeavor.

Business Plan Overview

Most business plans have several distinct sections ( Figure 11.16 ). The business plan can range from a few pages to twenty-five pages or more, depending on the purpose and the intended audience. For our discussion, we’ll describe a brief business plan and a standard business plan. If you are able to successfully design a business model canvas, then you will have the structure for developing a clear business plan that you can submit for financial consideration.

Both types of business plans aim at providing a picture and roadmap to follow from conception to creation. If you opt for the brief business plan, you will focus primarily on articulating a big-picture overview of your business concept.

The full business plan is aimed at executing the vision concept, dealing with the proverbial devil in the details. Developing a full business plan will assist those of you who need a more detailed and structured roadmap, or those of you with little to no background in business. The business planning process includes the business model, a feasibility analysis, and a full business plan, which we will discuss later in this section. Next, we explore how a business plan can meet several different needs.

Purposes of a Business Plan

A business plan can serve many different purposes—some internal, others external. As we discussed previously, you can use a business plan as an internal early planning device, an extension of a napkin sketch, and as a follow-up to one of the canvas tools. A business plan can be an organizational roadmap , that is, an internal planning tool and working plan that you can apply to your business in order to reach your desired goals over the course of several years. The business plan should be written by the owners of the venture, since it forces a firsthand examination of the business operations and allows them to focus on areas that need improvement.

Refer to the business venture throughout the document. Generally speaking, a business plan should not be written in the first person.

A major external purpose for the business plan is as an investment tool that outlines financial projections, becoming a document designed to attract investors. In many instances, a business plan can complement a formal investor’s pitch. In this context, the business plan is a presentation plan, intended for an outside audience that may or may not be familiar with your industry, your business, and your competitors.

You can also use your business plan as a contingency plan by outlining some “what-if” scenarios and exploring how you might respond if these scenarios unfold. Pretty Young Professional launched in November 2010 as an online resource to guide an emerging generation of female leaders. The site focused on recent female college graduates and current students searching for professional roles and those in their first professional roles. It was founded by four friends who were coworkers at the global consultancy firm McKinsey. But after positions and equity were decided among them, fundamental differences of opinion about the direction of the business emerged between two factions, according to the cofounder and former CEO Kathryn Minshew . “I think, naively, we assumed that if we kicked the can down the road on some of those things, we’d be able to sort them out,” Minshew said. Minshew went on to found a different professional site, The Muse , and took much of the editorial team of Pretty Young Professional with her. 49 Whereas greater planning potentially could have prevented the early demise of Pretty Young Professional, a change in planning led to overnight success for Joshua Esnard and The Cut Buddy team. Esnard invented and patented the plastic hair template that he was selling online out of his Fort Lauderdale garage while working a full-time job at Broward College and running a side business. Esnard had hundreds of boxes of Cut Buddies sitting in his home when he changed his marketing plan to enlist companies specializing in making videos go viral. It worked so well that a promotional video for the product garnered 8 million views in hours. The Cut Buddy sold over 4,000 products in a few hours when Esnard only had hundreds remaining. Demand greatly exceeded his supply, so Esnard had to scramble to increase manufacturing and offered customers two-for-one deals to make up for delays. This led to selling 55,000 units, generating $700,000 in sales in 2017. 50 After appearing on Shark Tank and landing a deal with Daymond John that gave the “shark” a 20-percent equity stake in return for $300,000, The Cut Buddy has added new distribution channels to include retail sales along with online commerce. Changing one aspect of a business plan—the marketing plan—yielded success for The Cut Buddy.

If you opt for the brief business plan, you will focus primarily on articulating a big-picture overview of your business concept. This version is used to interest potential investors, employees, and other stakeholders, and will include a financial summary “box,” but it must have a disclaimer, and the founder/entrepreneur may need to have the people who receive it sign a nondisclosure agreement (NDA) . The full business plan is aimed at executing the vision concept, providing supporting details, and would be required by financial institutions and others as they formally become stakeholders in the venture. Both are aimed at providing a picture and roadmap to go from conception to creation.

Types of Business Plans

The brief business plan is similar to an extended executive summary from the full business plan. This concise document provides a broad overview of your entrepreneurial concept, your team members, how and why you will execute on your plans, and why you are the ones to do so. You can think of a brief business plan as a scene setter or—since we began this chapter with a film reference—as a trailer to the full movie. The brief business plan is the commercial equivalent to a trailer for Field of Dreams , whereas the full plan is the full-length movie equivalent.

Brief Business Plan or Executive Summary

As the name implies, the brief business plan or executive summary summarizes key elements of the entire business plan, such as the business concept, financial features, and current business position. The executive summary version of the business plan is your opportunity to broadly articulate the overall concept and vision of the company for yourself, for prospective investors, and for current and future employees.

A typical executive summary is generally no longer than a page, but because the brief business plan is essentially an extended executive summary, the executive summary section is vital. This is the “ask” to an investor. You should begin by clearly stating what you are asking for in the summary.

In the business concept phase, you’ll describe the business, its product, and its markets. Describe the customer segment it serves and why your company will hold a competitive advantage. This section may align roughly with the customer segments and value-proposition segments of a canvas.

Next, highlight the important financial features, including sales, profits, cash flows, and return on investment. Like the financial portion of a feasibility analysis, the financial analysis component of a business plan may typically include items like a twelve-month profit and loss projection, a three- or four-year profit and loss projection, a cash-flow projection, a projected balance sheet, and a breakeven calculation. You can explore a feasibility study and financial projections in more depth in the formal business plan. Here, you want to focus on the big picture of your numbers and what they mean.

The current business position section can furnish relevant information about you and your team members and the company at large. This is your opportunity to tell the story of how you formed the company, to describe its legal status (form of operation), and to list the principal players. In one part of the extended executive summary, you can cover your reasons for starting the business: Here is an opportunity to clearly define the needs you think you can meet and perhaps get into the pains and gains of customers. You also can provide a summary of the overall strategic direction in which you intend to take the company. Describe the company’s mission, vision, goals and objectives, overall business model, and value proposition.

Rice University’s Student Business Plan Competition, one of the largest and overall best-regarded graduate school business-plan competitions (see Telling Your Entrepreneurial Story and Pitching the Idea ), requires an executive summary of up to five pages to apply. 51 , 52 Its suggested sections are shown in Table 11.2 .

Are You Ready?

Create a brief business plan.

Fill out a canvas of your choosing for a well-known startup: Uber, Netflix, Dropbox, Etsy, Airbnb, Bird/Lime, Warby Parker, or any of the companies featured throughout this chapter or one of your choice. Then create a brief business plan for that business. See if you can find a version of the company’s actual executive summary, business plan, or canvas. Compare and contrast your vision with what the company has articulated.

  • These companies are well established but is there a component of what you charted that you would advise the company to change to ensure future viability?
  • Map out a contingency plan for a “what-if” scenario if one key aspect of the company or the environment it operates in were drastically is altered?

Full Business Plan

Even full business plans can vary in length, scale, and scope. Rice University sets a ten-page cap on business plans submitted for the full competition. The IndUS Entrepreneurs , one of the largest global networks of entrepreneurs, also holds business plan competitions for students through its Tie Young Entrepreneurs program. In contrast, business plans submitted for that competition can usually be up to twenty-five pages. These are just two examples. Some components may differ slightly; common elements are typically found in a formal business plan outline. The next section will provide sample components of a full business plan for a fictional business.

Executive Summary

The executive summary should provide an overview of your business with key points and issues. Because the summary is intended to summarize the entire document, it is most helpful to write this section last, even though it comes first in sequence. The writing in this section should be especially concise. Readers should be able to understand your needs and capabilities at first glance. The section should tell the reader what you want and your “ask” should be explicitly stated in the summary.

Describe your business, its product or service, and the intended customers. Explain what will be sold, who it will be sold to, and what competitive advantages the business has. Table 11.3 shows a sample executive summary for the fictional company La Vida Lola.

Business Description

This section describes the industry, your product, and the business and success factors. It should provide a current outlook as well as future trends and developments. You also should address your company’s mission, vision, goals, and objectives. Summarize your overall strategic direction, your reasons for starting the business, a description of your products and services, your business model, and your company’s value proposition. Consider including the Standard Industrial Classification/North American Industry Classification System (SIC/NAICS) code to specify the industry and insure correct identification. The industry extends beyond where the business is located and operates, and should include national and global dynamics. Table 11.4 shows a sample business description for La Vida Lola.

Industry Analysis and Market Strategies

Here you should define your market in terms of size, structure, growth prospects, trends, and sales potential. You’ll want to include your TAM and forecast the SAM . (Both these terms are discussed in Conducting a Feasibility Analysis .) This is a place to address market segmentation strategies by geography, customer attributes, or product orientation. Describe your positioning relative to your competitors’ in terms of pricing, distribution, promotion plan, and sales potential. Table 11.5 shows an example industry analysis and market strategy for La Vida Lola.

Competitive Analysis

The competitive analysis is a statement of the business strategy as it relates to the competition. You want to be able to identify who are your major competitors and assess what are their market shares, markets served, strategies employed, and expected response to entry? You likely want to conduct a classic SWOT analysis (Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Threats) and complete a competitive-strength grid or competitive matrix. Outline your company’s competitive strengths relative to those of the competition in regard to product, distribution, pricing, promotion, and advertising. What are your company’s competitive advantages and their likely impacts on its success? The key is to construct it properly for the relevant features/benefits (by weight, according to customers) and how the startup compares to incumbents. The competitive matrix should show clearly how and why the startup has a clear (if not currently measurable) competitive advantage. Some common features in the example include price, benefits, quality, type of features, locations, and distribution/sales. Sample templates are shown in Figure 11.17 and Figure 11.18 . A competitive analysis helps you create a marketing strategy that will identify assets or skills that your competitors are lacking so you can plan to fill those gaps, giving you a distinct competitive advantage. When creating a competitor analysis, it is important to focus on the key features and elements that matter to customers, rather than focusing too heavily on the entrepreneur’s idea and desires.

Operations and Management Plan

In this section, outline how you will manage your company. Describe its organizational structure. Here you can address the form of ownership and, if warranted, include an organizational chart/structure. Highlight the backgrounds, experiences, qualifications, areas of expertise, and roles of members of the management team. This is also the place to mention any other stakeholders, such as a board of directors or advisory board(s), and their relevant relationship to the founder, experience and value to help make the venture successful, and professional service firms providing management support, such as accounting services and legal counsel.

Table 11.6 shows a sample operations and management plan for La Vida Lola.

Marketing Plan

Here you should outline and describe an effective overall marketing strategy for your venture, providing details regarding pricing, promotion, advertising, distribution, media usage, public relations, and a digital presence. Fully describe your sales management plan and the composition of your sales force, along with a comprehensive and detailed budget for the marketing plan. Table 11.7 shows a sample marketing plan for La Vida Lola.

Financial Plan

A financial plan seeks to forecast revenue and expenses; project a financial narrative; and estimate project costs, valuations, and cash flow projections. This section should present an accurate, realistic, and achievable financial plan for your venture (see Entrepreneurial Finance and Accounting for detailed discussions about conducting these projections). Include sales forecasts and income projections, pro forma financial statements ( Building the Entrepreneurial Dream Team , a breakeven analysis, and a capital budget. Identify your possible sources of financing (discussed in Conducting a Feasibility Analysis ). Figure 11.19 shows a template of cash-flow needs for La Vida Lola.

Entrepreneur In Action

Laughing man coffee.

Hugh Jackman ( Figure 11.20 ) may best be known for portraying a comic-book superhero who used his mutant abilities to protect the world from villains. But the Wolverine actor is also working to make the planet a better place for real, not through adamantium claws but through social entrepreneurship.

A love of java jolted Jackman into action in 2009, when he traveled to Ethiopia with a Christian humanitarian group to shoot a documentary about the impact of fair-trade certification on coffee growers there. He decided to launch a business and follow in the footsteps of the late Paul Newman, another famous actor turned philanthropist via food ventures.

Jackman launched Laughing Man Coffee two years later; he sold the line to Keurig in 2015. One Laughing Man Coffee café in New York continues to operate independently, investing its proceeds into charitable programs that support better housing, health, and educational initiatives within fair-trade farming communities. 55 Although the New York location is the only café, the coffee brand is still distributed, with Keurig donating an undisclosed portion of Laughing Man proceeds to those causes (whereas Jackman donates all his profits). The company initially donated its profits to World Vision, the Christian humanitarian group Jackman accompanied in 2009. In 2017, it created the Laughing Man Foundation to be more active with its money management and distribution.

  • You be the entrepreneur. If you were Jackman, would you have sold the company to Keurig? Why or why not?
  • Would you have started the Laughing Man Foundation?
  • What else can Jackman do to aid fair-trade practices for coffee growers?

What Can You Do?

Textbooks for change.

Founded in 2014, Textbooks for Change uses a cross-compensation model, in which one customer segment pays for a product or service, and the profit from that revenue is used to provide the same product or service to another, underserved segment. Textbooks for Change partners with student organizations to collect used college textbooks, some of which are re-sold while others are donated to students in need at underserved universities across the globe. The organization has reused or recycled 250,000 textbooks, providing 220,000 students with access through seven campus partners in East Africa. This B-corp social enterprise tackles a problem and offers a solution that is directly relevant to college students like yourself. Have you observed a problem on your college campus or other campuses that is not being served properly? Could it result in a social enterprise?

Work It Out

Franchisee set out.

A franchisee of East Coast Wings, a chain with dozens of restaurants in the United States, has decided to part ways with the chain. The new store will feature the same basic sports-bar-and-restaurant concept and serve the same basic foods: chicken wings, burgers, sandwiches, and the like. The new restaurant can’t rely on the same distributors and suppliers. A new business plan is needed.

  • What steps should the new restaurant take to create a new business plan?
  • Should it attempt to serve the same customers? Why or why not?

Tim Berry

Planning, Startups, Stories

Tim berry on business planning, starting and growing your business, and having a life in the meantime., standard business plan financials: projected profit and loss.

Continuing with my series here on standard business plan financials, all taken from my Lean Business Planning site, the Profit and Loss, also called Income Statement, is probably the most standard of all financial statements. And the projected profit and loss, or projected income (or pro-forma profit and loss or pro-forma income) is also the most standard of the financial projections in a business plan.

Simple Profit and Loss

  • It starts with Sales, which is why business people who like buzzwords will sometimes refer to sales as “the top line.”
  • It then shows Direct Costs (or COGS, or Unit Costs).
  • Then Gross Margin, Sales less Direct Costs.
  • Then operating expenses.
  • Gross margin less operating expenses is gross profit, also called EBITDA for “earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization.” I use EBITDA instead of the more traditional EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes). I explained that choice and depreciation and amortization as well in Financial Projection Tips and Traps , in the previous section.
  • Then it shows depreciation, interest expenses, and then taxes…
  • Then, at the very bottom, Net Profit; this is why so many people refer to net profit as “the bottom line,” which has also come to mean the conclusion, or main point, in a discussion.

The following illustration shows a simple Projected Profit and Loss for the bicycle store I’ve been using as an example. This example doesn’t divide operating expenses into categories. The format and math start with sales at the top. You’ll find that same basic layout in everything from small business accounting statements to the financial disclosures of large enterprises whose stock is traded on public markets. Companies vary widely on how much detail they include. And projections are always different from statements, because of Planning not accounting . But still this is standard.

Sample Profit Loss

A lean business plan will normally include sales, costs of sales, and expenses. To take it from there to a more formal projected Profit and Loss is a matter of collecting forecasts from the lean plan. The sales and costs of sales go at the top, then operating expenses. Calculating net profit is simple math.

From Lean to Profit and Loss

Keep your assumptions simple. Remember our principle about planning and accounting. Don’t try to calculate interest based on a complex series of debt instruments; just average your interest over the projected debt. Don’t try to do graduated tax rates; use an average tax percentage for a profitable company.

Notice that the Profit and Loss involves only four of the Six Key Financial Terms . While a Profit and Loss Statement or Projected Profit and Loss affects the Balance Sheet because earnings are part of capital, it includes only sales, costs, expenses, and profit.

' src=

Hi, In case of bank financing for machineries and working capital, how can it be broken down in to the expense stream? ( capital + interest)

' src=

When you spend on assets is not deductible from income, and is therefore not an expense. What you spent to repay the principle of a loan is not deductible, and therefore not an expense. The interest on a loan is deductible, and is an expense.

' src=

Excuse me, may I know if the project profit & loss should plan for the first year only or for year 1-3 in business plan of a new company?

Kattie Wan, I recommend for normal cases the projected profit and loss monthly for the first 12 months, and two years annually after that. There are always special cases, though; every business is different.

Things to Look into When Creating a Business Plan Profit and Loss Statement

A business plan profit and loss statement is very important as it can help you address certain issues and/or problems about your financial condition. Moreover, it can present the actual figures that you need to be aware of not only with regards your profits but also your expenses. To come up with an effective business plan profit and loss statement, you have to make sure that you will be keen and specific when listing down all the details that are needed to be present in the document. Here are some of the elements and factors that you have to consider when making a comprehensive business plan profit and loss statement:

  • Be aware of where the business plan profit and loss statement will be used. This can help you identify the time period that is needed to be observed in the statement presentation. Profit and loss statements commonly scope the monthly, quarterly, or yearly sales and expenses of your business. The length of time seen in the document will depend on the reason why the profit and loss statement is currently needed.
  • Do not get confused about a business plan profit and loss statement and a balance sheet. Even if they are both necessary to be included in your financial statement, you have to remember that there are still differences between the two. Like a cash flow statement, your business plan profit and loss statement is time-bound. This means that the document is a representation of what had occurred within a specific or given time period. On the other hand, a balance sheet only presents the capital, expenses, and liabilities of the company just in a particular moment or point in time.
  • Just like when developing a  profit and loss budget , you have to be reminded that the creation of your business plan profit and loss statement must not be entirely dependent on the same documents used by other businesses. Creating a business plan profit and loss statement contains numbers that are based on actual and firsthand information. Hence, you have to make sure that you will use methods and judgments that are suitable for the details of your own statement.
  • There are many ways that a profit and loss statement can be called. Some entities call it income statement and others also use a variety of terms. Even if there are differences with what this document is called, the content of each are still the same with one another when it comes to specifications of the ability, or the inability, of businesses to be profit-generating.

Advantages of Having and Using a Business Plan Profit and Loss Statement

Aside from a  customer profitability analysis , market analysis, and business plan profit and loss analysis, there are still a lot of documents and analysis materials that a business need to prepare to make sure that it will always be updated of its current standing as a corporate entity. • A business plan profit and loss statement can help your creditors and investors to be knowledgeable of how your business performed within a particular time period. An impressive business plan profit and loss statement can give your business the advantage of easily persuading or convincing your stakeholders to further support your corporate undertakings.
  • A business plan profit and loss statement can make it more effective for you to predict your future financial performance. Through this, you can measure your company’s ability and capacity to generate cash flows accordingly as you sustain your business and its operations.
  • A business plan profit and loss statement can serve as a reference whenever you need to create wise financial decisions that can impact or affect your business and its stakeholders. Having this document at hand can give you an idea of what to prioritize, what to change, and what to remove in your financial activities and processes.
  • A business plan profit and loss statement can be one of the proofs of the financial successes and milestones that your business have acquired and attained. Understanding your net income and how it can reflect the performance of your business can also give you an idea of the growth and development that your company was able to achieve at a given time span.
  • A business plan profit and loss statement is usually one of the requirements of the government and industry associations so that a business can legally continue its operations, maintain its association membership status, present its current condition, and/or ensure that it is following particular regulations. If you will create a business plan profit and loss statement regularly, then you can ensure that your efforts will not be wasted as you already have the document that you are required to present to particular entities at any given time.

Breaking Down a Business Plan’s Profit and Loss Statement

Most business plan profit and loss statements are done annually. However, there are also some businesses that would like to have an updated monthly or quarterly profit and loss statement. With this, you have to keep in mind that developing the specified document must be based on the needs of your business and not solely when it is required by external organizations and entities. Unlike a  business consulting business plan  where content varies on the area/s of the business where consultation is necessary, the composition of profit and loss statements are mostly the same. Here are some of the common or basic items that you can see in a simple business plan profit and loss statement:

  • The clean and accurate financial records that have been used as references in the development of the profit and loss statement
  • The specification of the selected time period which limits and scopes the duration where the details within the profit and loss statement are based on and has been gathered from
  • The reason of the profit and loss statement’s creation
  • The name of the person or the identification of the team who made the profit and loss statement
  • The gross profit which is identified by deducting the business’s cost of sales from the revenue
  • The operating profit which is identified by specifying the gross profit of the business and subtracting operating expenses from it
  • The display of non-operating expenses and revenues of the organization which are essential to still be taken into account for a more accurate financial assessment
  • The description and presentation of the total profit or loss of the business.

Advantages and Disadvantages of A Business Plan Template

A business plan template's benefits and drawbacks will be discussed here.

Saves Time:

Business plan template PDF files provide a pre-designed structure, making it easier and quicker to create a well-organized plan. This time-saving factor allows entrepreneurs to focus on other critical aspects of their business.

Ensures Comprehensive Planning:

A business plan template PDF prompts entrepreneurs to consider all the essential details and components required for a successful venture. It helps identify potential challenges and solutions, ensuring a more comprehensive planning process.

Professional Formatting:

Using a business plan template PDF ensures that your plan follows a professional format. This consistency helps in presenting your ideas and concepts in a clear and organized manner, making it easier for investors or lenders to understand your vision.

Disadvantages

Lack of Originality:

While templates offer structure and guidance, they may limit creativity and originality. Entrepreneurs may need help to express their unique ideas and differentiate themselves from competitors when using a template.

Not Tailored for Every Business:

Business plan templates are general guidelines that may not address specific industry or business needs. Entrepreneurs must adapt the template to fit their unique circumstances, which can be time-consuming and require additional research.

Potential Inaccuracy:

Templates often provide sample financial projections or market analysis, which may not accurately reflect an entrepreneur's situation. Without in-depth research, relying solely on template data can lead to incorrect assumptions and unrealistic expectations.

How can I plan what to eat or drink when I have diabetes?

How can physical activity help manage my diabetes, what can i do to reach or maintain a healthy weight, should i quit smoking, how can i take care of my mental health, clinical trials for healthy living with diabetes.

Healthy living is a way to manage diabetes . To have a healthy lifestyle, take steps now to plan healthy meals and snacks, do physical activities, get enough sleep, and quit smoking or using tobacco products.

Healthy living may help keep your body’s blood pressure , cholesterol , and blood glucose level, also called blood sugar level, in the range your primary health care professional recommends. Your primary health care professional may be a doctor, a physician assistant, or a nurse practitioner. Healthy living may also help prevent or delay health problems  from diabetes that can affect your heart, kidneys, eyes, brain, and other parts of your body.

Making lifestyle changes can be hard, but starting with small changes and building from there may benefit your health. You may want to get help from family, loved ones, friends, and other trusted people in your community. You can also get information from your health care professionals.

What you choose to eat, how much you eat, and when you eat are parts of a meal plan. Having healthy foods and drinks can help keep your blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels in the ranges your health care professional recommends. If you have overweight or obesity, a healthy meal plan—along with regular physical activity, getting enough sleep, and other healthy behaviors—may help you reach and maintain a healthy weight. In some cases, health care professionals may also recommend diabetes medicines that may help you lose weight, or weight-loss surgery, also called metabolic and bariatric surgery.

Choose healthy foods and drinks

There is no right or wrong way to choose healthy foods and drinks that may help manage your diabetes. Healthy meal plans for people who have diabetes may include

  • dairy or plant-based dairy products
  • nonstarchy vegetables
  • protein foods
  • whole grains

Try to choose foods that include nutrients such as vitamins, calcium , fiber , and healthy fats . Also try to choose drinks with little or no added sugar , such as tap or bottled water, low-fat or non-fat milk, and unsweetened tea, coffee, or sparkling water.

Try to plan meals and snacks that have fewer

  • foods high in saturated fat
  • foods high in sodium, a mineral found in salt
  • sugary foods , such as cookies and cakes, and sweet drinks, such as soda, juice, flavored coffee, and sports drinks

Your body turns carbohydrates , or carbs, from food into glucose, which can raise your blood glucose level. Some fruits, beans, and starchy vegetables—such as potatoes and corn—have more carbs than other foods. Keep carbs in mind when planning your meals.

You should also limit how much alcohol you drink. If you take insulin  or certain diabetes medicines , drinking alcohol can make your blood glucose level drop too low, which is called hypoglycemia . If you do drink alcohol, be sure to eat food when you drink and remember to check your blood glucose level after drinking. Talk with your health care team about your alcohol-drinking habits.

A woman in a wheelchair, chopping vegetables at a kitchen table.

Find the best times to eat or drink

Talk with your health care professional or health care team about when you should eat or drink. The best time to have meals and snacks may depend on

  • what medicines you take for diabetes
  • what your level of physical activity or your work schedule is
  • whether you have other health conditions or diseases

Ask your health care team if you should eat before, during, or after physical activity. Some diabetes medicines, such as sulfonylureas  or insulin, may make your blood glucose level drop too low during exercise or if you skip or delay a meal.

Plan how much to eat or drink

You may worry that having diabetes means giving up foods and drinks you enjoy. The good news is you can still have your favorite foods and drinks, but you might need to have them in smaller portions  or enjoy them less often.

For people who have diabetes, carb counting and the plate method are two common ways to plan how much to eat or drink. Talk with your health care professional or health care team to find a method that works for you.

Carb counting

Carbohydrate counting , or carb counting, means planning and keeping track of the amount of carbs you eat and drink in each meal or snack. Not all people with diabetes need to count carbs. However, if you take insulin, counting carbs can help you know how much insulin to take.

Plate method

The plate method helps you control portion sizes  without counting and measuring. This method divides a 9-inch plate into the following three sections to help you choose the types and amounts of foods to eat for each meal.

  • Nonstarchy vegetables—such as leafy greens, peppers, carrots, or green beans—should make up half of your plate.
  • Carb foods that are high in fiber—such as brown rice, whole grains, beans, or fruits—should make up one-quarter of your plate.
  • Protein foods—such as lean meats, fish, dairy, or tofu or other soy products—should make up one quarter of your plate.

If you are not taking insulin, you may not need to count carbs when using the plate method.

Plate method, with half of the circular plate filled with nonstarchy vegetables; one fourth of the plate showing carbohydrate foods, including fruits; and one fourth of the plate showing protein foods. A glass filled with water, or another zero-calorie drink, is on the side.

Work with your health care team to create a meal plan that works for you. You may want to have a diabetes educator  or a registered dietitian  on your team. A registered dietitian can provide medical nutrition therapy , which includes counseling to help you create and follow a meal plan. Your health care team may be able to recommend other resources, such as a healthy lifestyle coach, to help you with making changes. Ask your health care team or your insurance company if your benefits include medical nutrition therapy or other diabetes care resources.

Talk with your health care professional before taking dietary supplements

There is no clear proof that specific foods, herbs, spices, or dietary supplements —such as vitamins or minerals—can help manage diabetes. Your health care professional may ask you to take vitamins or minerals if you can’t get enough from foods. Talk with your health care professional before you take any supplements, because some may cause side effects or affect how well your diabetes medicines work.

Research shows that regular physical activity helps people manage their diabetes and stay healthy. Benefits of physical activity may include

  • lower blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels
  • better heart health
  • healthier weight
  • better mood and sleep
  • better balance and memory

Talk with your health care professional before starting a new physical activity or changing how much physical activity you do. They may suggest types of activities based on your ability, schedule, meal plan, interests, and diabetes medicines. Your health care professional may also tell you the best times of day to be active or what to do if your blood glucose level goes out of the range recommended for you.

Two women walking outside.

Do different types of physical activity

People with diabetes can be active, even if they take insulin or use technology such as insulin pumps .

Try to do different kinds of activities . While being more active may have more health benefits, any physical activity is better than none. Start slowly with activities you enjoy. You may be able to change your level of effort and try other activities over time. Having a friend or family member join you may help you stick to your routine.

The physical activities you do may need to be different if you are age 65 or older , are pregnant , or have a disability or health condition . Physical activities may also need to be different for children and teens . Ask your health care professional or health care team about activities that are safe for you.

Aerobic activities

Aerobic activities make you breathe harder and make your heart beat faster. You can try walking, dancing, wheelchair rolling, or swimming. Most adults should try to get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each week. Aim to do 30 minutes a day on most days of the week. You don’t have to do all 30 minutes at one time. You can break up physical activity into small amounts during your day and still get the benefit. 1

Strength training or resistance training

Strength training or resistance training may make your muscles and bones stronger. You can try lifting weights or doing other exercises such as wall pushups or arm raises. Try to do this kind of training two times a week. 1

Balance and stretching activities

Balance and stretching activities may help you move better and have stronger muscles and bones. You may want to try standing on one leg or stretching your legs when sitting on the floor. Try to do these kinds of activities two or three times a week. 1

Some activities that need balance may be unsafe for people with nerve damage or vision problems caused by diabetes. Ask your health care professional or health care team about activities that are safe for you.

Group of people doing stretching exercises outdoors.

Stay safe during physical activity

Staying safe during physical activity is important. Here are some tips to keep in mind.

Drink liquids

Drinking liquids helps prevent dehydration , or the loss of too much water in your body. Drinking water is a way to stay hydrated. Sports drinks often have a lot of sugar and calories , and you don’t need them for most moderate physical activities.

Avoid low blood glucose

Check your blood glucose level before, during, and right after physical activity. Physical activity often lowers the level of glucose in your blood. Low blood glucose levels may last for hours or days after physical activity. You are most likely to have low blood glucose if you take insulin or some other diabetes medicines, such as sulfonylureas.

Ask your health care professional if you should take less insulin or eat carbs before, during, or after physical activity. Low blood glucose can be a serious medical emergency that must be treated right away. Take steps to protect yourself. You can learn how to treat low blood glucose , let other people know what to do if you need help, and use a medical alert bracelet.

Avoid high blood glucose and ketoacidosis

Taking less insulin before physical activity may help prevent low blood glucose, but it may also make you more likely to have high blood glucose. If your body does not have enough insulin, it can’t use glucose as a source of energy and will use fat instead. When your body uses fat for energy, your body makes chemicals called ketones .

High levels of ketones in your blood can lead to a condition called diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) . DKA is a medical emergency that should be treated right away. DKA is most common in people with type 1 diabetes . Occasionally, DKA may affect people with type 2 diabetes  who have lost their ability to produce insulin. Ask your health care professional how much insulin you should take before physical activity, whether you need to test your urine for ketones, and what level of ketones is dangerous for you.

Take care of your feet

People with diabetes may have problems with their feet because high blood glucose levels can damage blood vessels and nerves. To help prevent foot problems, wear comfortable and supportive shoes and take care of your feet  before, during, and after physical activity.

A man checks his foot while a woman watches over his shoulder.

If you have diabetes, managing your weight  may bring you several health benefits. Ask your health care professional or health care team if you are at a healthy weight  or if you should try to lose weight.

If you are an adult with overweight or obesity, work with your health care team to create a weight-loss plan. Losing 5% to 7% of your current weight may help you prevent or improve some health problems  and manage your blood glucose, cholesterol, and blood pressure levels. 2 If you are worried about your child’s weight  and they have diabetes, talk with their health care professional before your child starts a new weight-loss plan.

You may be able to reach and maintain a healthy weight by

  • following a healthy meal plan
  • consuming fewer calories
  • being physically active
  • getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night 3

If you have type 2 diabetes, your health care professional may recommend diabetes medicines that may help you lose weight.

Online tools such as the Body Weight Planner  may help you create eating and physical activity plans. You may want to talk with your health care professional about other options for managing your weight, including joining a weight-loss program  that can provide helpful information, support, and behavioral or lifestyle counseling. These options may have a cost, so make sure to check the details of the programs.

Your health care professional may recommend weight-loss surgery  if you aren’t able to reach a healthy weight with meal planning, physical activity, and taking diabetes medicines that help with weight loss.

If you are pregnant , trying to lose weight may not be healthy. However, you should ask your health care professional whether it makes sense to monitor or limit your weight gain during pregnancy.

Both diabetes and smoking —including using tobacco products and e-cigarettes—cause your blood vessels to narrow. Both diabetes and smoking increase your risk of having a heart attack or stroke , nerve damage , kidney disease , eye disease , or amputation . Secondhand smoke can also affect the health of your family or others who live with you.

If you smoke or use other tobacco products, stop. Ask for help . You don’t have to do it alone.

Feeling stressed, sad, or angry can be common for people with diabetes. Managing diabetes or learning to cope with new information about your health can be hard. People with chronic illnesses such as diabetes may develop anxiety or other mental health conditions .

Learn healthy ways to lower your stress , and ask for help from your health care team or a mental health professional. While it may be uncomfortable to talk about your feelings, finding a health care professional whom you trust and want to talk with may help you

  • lower your feelings of stress, depression, or anxiety
  • manage problems sleeping or remembering things
  • see how diabetes affects your family, school, work, or financial situation

Ask your health care team for mental health resources for people with diabetes.

Sleeping too much or too little may raise your blood glucose levels. Your sleep habits may also affect your mental health and vice versa. People with diabetes and overweight or obesity can also have other health conditions that affect sleep, such as sleep apnea , which can raise your blood pressure and risk of heart disease.

NIDDK conducts and supports clinical trials in many diseases and conditions, including diabetes. The trials look to find new ways to prevent, detect, or treat disease and improve quality of life.

What are clinical trials for healthy living with diabetes?

Clinical trials—and other types of clinical studies —are part of medical research and involve people like you. When you volunteer to take part in a clinical study, you help health care professionals and researchers learn more about disease and improve health care for people in the future.

Researchers are studying many aspects of healthy living for people with diabetes, such as

  • how changing when you eat may affect body weight and metabolism
  • how less access to healthy foods may affect diabetes management, other health problems, and risk of dying
  • whether low-carbohydrate meal plans can help lower blood glucose levels
  • which diabetes medicines are more likely to help people lose weight

Find out if clinical trials are right for you .

What clinical trials for healthy living with diabetes are looking for participants?

You can view a filtered list of clinical studies on healthy living with diabetes that are federally funded, open, and recruiting at www.ClinicalTrials.gov . You can expand or narrow the list to include clinical studies from industry, universities, and individuals; however, the National Institutes of Health does not review these studies and cannot ensure they are safe for you. This PDF Workout Program Will Help You Build Real Muscle at 50

This MVP-exclusive plan is designed to help you get in the best shape of your life.

STOP ASSUMING THAT your age 50-plus workouts are only meant to maintain or stave off the sands of time. Yes, you do need to pay extra attention to your fitness level after you turn 50; the principle of "use it or lose it" applies here. But you can also keep making gains, too. And as an MH MVP member, you have access to the plan that can put you on the right path.

Krahn designed the four-week plan using a trio of tenets to maximize muscle-building effectiveness for guys who are 50-plus.

bryan krahn cscs

Always Come Back Tomorrow

There are gains to be made past 50. That's the keystone of this program. That said, your body isn't in the same condition it was in your twenties, thirties, or even your forties—so you need to train smart to stay in the game. Your biggest focus now will shift from prioritizing progressive overload to avoiding injury. You'll do this by staying away from potentially risky training setups, like employing joint-straining barbell movements and training extra heavy. As long as you're putting in concerted effort, you can still see results.

Back Work Above All

Get ready for lots of pulling. The Max Muscle at 50 program gives your back muscles a great deal of attention, since spine strength and shoulder health are key for overall healthy movement. Yes, you'll still hit your chest, arms, core, and legs—you'll just emphasize the back.

Train More, Not Less

Contrary to those who might advise that you slow down as you age, Krahn holds that consistent training will he the key to success. Like we said before, this is use it or lose it time. You will need to train smarter than when you could hit the gym almost every day and go back the next day ready for more, but you don't need to be so cautious that you hold yourself back from what you love to do.

What are you waiting for? As an MVP, you have access to the Max Muscle at 50 program—so download the PDF below.

Once you've finished this plan, you can gain access to even more workouts by joining MH MVP Premium .

You can now get Ozempic at Costco — but don't expect big savings

  • Costco is now selling the weight loss drug Ozempic through a partnership with health startup Sesame.
  • Members can pay $179 for a prescription and appointment as part of a three-month package.
  • Still, that doesn't cover the cost of the GLP-1 drug, which has gained popularity but can be costly.

Insider Today

Silver bullion and sushi aren't the only new additions to Costco's product selection this year. Now, you can get a prescription for the weight loss drug Ozempic through the retailer, too.

Costco has started offering the prescriptions through a partnership with healthcare startup Sesame, CNN reported on Tuesday. For $179, members can get a prescription for the GLP-1 weight loss drug plus a meeting with a doctor or specialist. Members who get the drug are also able to message a doctor with questions or issues as they continue to use Ozempic.

One thing the program — which lasts three months and is renewable — does not include is the actual cost of Ozempic, which can run up to $1,600 a month without insurance, CNN reported. Getting insurance to cover the drugs is still tough for non-diabetic users, and some employers are worried that the costs could strain their finances.

Related stories

Costco did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider. Sesame Chief Marketing Officer Michael DiLorenzo told BI that the company has seen the number of participants in the startup's weight loss service increase by 50 times since it unveiled the option with Costco on Tuesday.

DiLorenzo said that Sesame is "focused on making sure that the products we have in-market now with Costco — weight loss, primary care, and mental health — are delivering the exceptional experience and results that Costco Members expect of everything they get from Costco."

Ozempic, Wegovy, and other GLP-1 drugs have gained popularity among people trying to lose weight over the last few years. First intended as a treatment for type 2 diabetes, the drug uses semaglutide, an ingredient that can moderate blood sugar. It can also reduce appetite, which is why it has gained traction for non-diabetic patients trying to shed pounds.

Sales of the drugs have been so great that they likely helped Denmark avoid a recession since the country is home to Ozempic- and Wegovy-maker Novo Nordisk.

Costco started working with Sesame last fall to offer basic health services, such as virtual check-ups. GLP-1 drugs weren't initially part of the partnership, according to Sesame cofounder and president Michael Botta.

But approximately one in five requests that Sesame got through the Costco program was about weight loss, so Sesame developed the offering to cater to those customers.

"We realized pretty quickly, just by looking at what people were curious about, that there was a clear unmet need here," he told CNN.

How entrepreneurs can keep their office space operating well.

Air conditioner above employee

While spring brings the beauty of blooming flowers and pleasant temperatures, it also ushers in a period of heightened weather volatility. As warm and cold air clashes, it often leads to the development of strong thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, hail, and even tornadoes in some regions.

Recently, one of our offices had some significant weather damage that had to be repaired. When this happened to me, I looked at options that could have prevented some of these issues. As much as I want to be mad at mother nature, as a business owner one of my responsibilities is to keep operations running smoothly. Knowing how to react to rapidly changing weather can ensure safety and minimize the impact of severe storms. Below, I’ll go over a few ways you can prepare and protect your office from extreme weather.

Conduct a Risk Assessment

It's necessary to understand the specific risks your office space faces during extreme weather, and a risk assessment will provide that information. You’ll identify areas that could be especially susceptible to damage. Look at windows, doors, and your roof. If water gets in, this is usually where a breach will occur. You’ll also want to think about landscaping features that could cause damage. You don’t want high winds picking up patio furniture and hurling it through a window.

Tall trees near your building can be especially risky, and they might need to be trimmed or cut down. If they fall, they can cause structural damage or even injure your employees. Debris can damage utility lines, HVAC systems, lighting, water lines, and your roof. It can also limit access to the property if a roadway is blocked.

While you can definitely do a walk through to look for risks yourself, you might consider consulting with a professional risk assessor or structural engineer to conduct a thorough evaluation. They can recognize potential issues that may not be immediately apparent and offer solutions.

Strong winds associated with hurricanes and tornadoes can easily damage your office building, but there are ways to give it a fighting chance:

Protect Windows and Doors

When your office is located somewhere that often experiences severe weather, it’s worth investing in impact-resistant doors and windows. If storms are less common, you could install protective coverings like storm shutters or plywood panels instead. You want to ensure all entry points are properly sealed to prevent water from coming in during heavy rain or flooding.

Secure Roofing and Siding

Roof damage is a common issue during severe weather events. Unfortunately, it’s also some of the most serious damage because it can lead to leaks and structural instability. Inspect your building’s roof regularly for loose shingles, damaged flashing, or signs of deterioration. Reinforce roofing materials as needed and consider installing hurricane straps or braces if you live in an area that sees storms regularly. Similarly, you can reinforce exterior siding to withstand high winds and flying debris.

Implement Flood Prevention Measures

Flooding can destroy your office. It can ruin equipment, documents, and even the building itself. If your office is located in a flood-prone area, you could install flood barriers or place sandbags around entry points to mitigate risks. You should also think about elevating electrical panels and HVAC systems. Considering ductless mini-split systems from companies like HVACDirect.com can be advantageous in flood-prone areas as they are typically installed higher on walls and are less susceptible to water damage.

To protect your people—which is the most important thing—make sure that your office has a comprehensive flood evacuation plan in place as well. This plan should include clear evacuation routes and designate assembly points at safe locations outside the flood zone. Assign specific roles and responsibilities to designated personnel, such as evacuation coordinators and first aid responders, to ensure an organized response.

Choose Backup Power and Communication Systems

Power outages are common during extreme weather. If you experience one, just know it’ll disrupt essential operations. It’s smart to invest in backup power sources such as generators or uninterruptible power supplies to keep critical systems running. Additionally, alternative communication channels such as satellite phones or mobile hotspots can help you stay connected with employees or clients during outages.

That said, if you know your workers are safe at home, always prioritize their safety over business. Avoid pressuring them to continue working if it compromises their safety. A few days of downtime won't bankrupt your business, and if it does, there are likely bigger issues at play. Ensuring that employees feel safe and supported during emergencies can foster trust and loyalty, which are invaluable assets for any organization in the long run.

Develop an Emergency Response Plan

One of the most important things you can do when preparing for an emergency is to have a plan. Clearly outline roles and responsibilities for employees, designate evacuation routes, and establish protocols for shutting down operations and securing sensitive equipment.

For instance, you could assign your operations manager the responsibility of overseeing the shutdown of all non-essential operations and securing sensitive equipment. This would include telling staff to power down computers to prevent damage from power surges. You might tell your IT personnel to ensure critical data is backed up and securely stored, either physically or on cloud-based servers, to mitigate the risk of data loss. They should also shut down servers and network infrastructure to minimize the risk of hardware damage or data corruption.

Conduct regular drills to ensure that all employees are familiar with emergency procedures and know how to respond effectively in crisis situations. You might feel like you’re in high school again meeting up in the parking lot and taking roll call, but there’s a reason you practice. The more familiar everyone is with what they need to do, the more confident they’ll be during actual emergencies. It reduces panic and leads to a more coordinated response if a crisis occurs.

It’s Better to Be Safe Than Sorry

While all this talk about emergency preparedness may seem extreme, taking the time now to prepare will be worth it if you do have to face a severe weather emergency. Protecting your office space and your team requires proactive planning, and the better your plan, the better off you'll be. Beside ongoing maintenance and the tips above, make sure you also have adequate insurance coverage to protect your office space from potential damage.

Your business is an investment, and you don’t want to lose it because you assumed it would always be safe. The world is unpredictable. Review your existing insurance policies to ensure they provide sufficient coverage for property damage, business interruption, and other weather-related risks. Depending on your location, you might want to purchase additional coverage to address specific vulnerabilities identified during your risk assessment.

Hopefully, by following these suggestions, you can minimize the impact of extreme weather events on your office operations and ensure the safety of your employees.
