With more than 100 graduate degree programs, the University of Chicago is uniquely able to offer students the advantages of combining opportunities through interdisciplinary work or by pursuing multiple degree programs. The details vary from program to program, and in most cases require applications to both programs. Please review the information provided by both departments to determine the application and course requirements for each pair of degrees.

Definitions:

• Dual degree—completing requirements for two separate degrees, including, for Ph.D., producing two dissertations. Degrees may be within the same academic unit or across academic units.
• Joint degree—completing requirements for two degree programs with possibly overlapping or coordinated degree requirements. Degrees may be within the same academic unit or across academic units.

Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience

This interdisciplinary program allows Biology graduate students to explore and join labs at the forefront of molecular and cellular neuroscience research. This includes labs in the Biology Department as well as additional labs doing cutting-edge neuroscience research at the Picower Institute for Learning and Memory, the McGovern Institute for Brain Research, and the MIT Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences.  Learn more

Joint MD/PhD Program

The joint MD/PhD program is designed for students interested in pursuing training in both medicine and research. Typically, our students pursue their MD at Harvard Medical School ; however, we welcome applicants from other programs. Students apply for the PhD program in the fall of their second year of medical school and spend an average of eight years completing both programs. To apply, use the Biology PhD online application and observe the same deadlines.  Harvard  HST MD/PhD applicants identify a research group prior to applying, and should include a letter from their prospective advisor. Harvard Pathways applicants should describe any steps they have taken to identify a possible thesis laboratory in our program.

Biophysics Certificate Program

Students pursuing a PhD in Biology can simultaneously earn a certificate in biophysics by completing a distribution of coursework. The MIT Biophysics community hosts regular seminars and an annual retreat that brings together students, postdocs and faculty who share common scientific interests.

Joint Program with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

The joint MIT/WHOI program has a separate application process that can be completed online . To be considered for the Biology graduate program independently of the MIT/WHOI Joint Program, you should complete both online applications. Please note that this program has different application deadlines.

Fairleigh Dickinson University offers a dual degree program for students interested in obtaining both a master’s and a doctorate in a field.

Applicants must meet the admissions requirements for the second degree program while maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Students may choose to study Business Administration, Public Administration, Health Science, Psychology, Public Health, or Pharmacy and Health Science.

Fairleigh Dickinson University  is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

George Mason University

George Mason University offers a dual degree program for those interested in receiving a Juris Doctorate and a Master of Business Administration.

The program can usually be completed in 3 years when studying full-time or 4 years when studying part-time. Applicants must submit GMAT or GRE scores and 2 letters of recommendation and may be required to complete an interview when applying.

George Mason University  is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

Mercer University

Mercer University offers a Doctor of Pharmacy and a Master of Science in Health Outcomes dual degree program. Applicants must submit a statement of purpose and a resume to apply.

Students in the program are given academic advice from the program director and a graduate advisor to help guide them through their thesis or capstone project. A GPA of 2.75 in the Doctor of Pharmacy courses and 3.0 in Health Outcomes must be maintained to graduate.

Mercer University  is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

National University

National University offers a dual degree for those interested in obtaining both a Master of Arts in Sport Psychology and a Doctor of Clinical Psychology. The program offers both full-time and part-time options and allows students to take the courses for the master’s degree online.

Applicants can apply year round and may have the GRE score requirements waived depending on their GPA. A team of advisors is available to help applicants through each step of the admissions process.

National University  is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission.

New York University

New York University offers a number of dual degree programs for students interested in obtaining either two master’s degrees or a doctorate and a master’s degree.

Applicants must submit additional test scores when applying. Those interested in getting a doctorate and a master’s may get a Juris Doctorate and Master of Business Administration or a Doctor of Dental Surgery and Master of Business Administration.

New York University  is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

Nova Southeastern University

Nova Southeastern University’s College of Health Care Science offers a dual degree program for those interested in obtaining Master and Doctor of Health Science degrees.

The program can typically be completed within 7 years. Both programs require students to have a bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, GRE scores, and prior health care experience.

NSU  is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

Rutgers University

Rutgers University offers a dual degree program for those interested in a Master and a PhD in Social Work. The program can usually be completed in 4 years.

Those interested in the program may apply directly to the program or after their first year of study in the Master of Social Work program. Official transcripts, GRE scores, 2 personal statements, and 3 letters of reference must be submitted when applying.

Rutgers  is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

Texas Tech University

Texas Tech University’s School of Law offers a number of dual degree programs. Students may receive a Juris Doctorate with a master’s degree in a variety of business, science, engineering, sports management, or government fields.

Applicants interested in a dual degree program may contact the law faculty advisor to learn more about their program of interest.

Texas Tech University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

University of St Thomas

The University of St. Thomas School of Law offers a dual degree program for those interested in receiving a Juris Doctor and a Master of Business Administration.

The program can typically be completed in 4 years, but students may also choose to take the program part-time or online. Applicants must submit LSAT scores, their undergraduate GPA, letters of recommendation, and a personal statement.

The  University of St. Thomas  is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

Widener University

Widener University offers a dual degree program for a Master in Criminal Justice and a Doctor of Psychology.

The program can typically be completed in 5 years and offers a clinical experience through practicum training, field placements, and internships. Applicants must have an undergraduate degree with a GPA of 3.0 or higher to be eligible. Though having a major in psychology may help with admittance, it is not required.

Widener University  is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

Online Masters and PhD Combined Programs

Just as some universities offer students the opportunity to earn a bachelors and masters at the same time , there are some doctoral programs that allow you to get a masters as you complete your doctorate. The masters degree serves as a gateway, or an optional exit point, on the longer path to completing the doctoral degree.

In this article, we’ll talk mostly about blended or dual degree programs. These types of programs allow students to work toward simultaneously earning a masters and doctoral degree in two different but complementary majors, such as business and medicine or business and law.

Bioengineering (joint UCSF) Jt PhD

The Department of Bioengineering offers a Master of Engineering (MEng) in Bioengineering, PhD in Bioengineering, and a Master of Translational Medicine (MTM). The PhD and MTM are operated in partnership with UC San Francisco, and degrees are granted jointly by UCSF and UC Berkeley.

Master of Engineering (MEng)

The Master of Engineering is a one-year masters degree with a strong emphasis on engineering and entrepreneurship designed for students planning to move directly into industry after completing the program.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The PhD in Bioengineering is granted jointly by Berkeley and UCSF, two of the top public universities in the world in engineering and health sciences. Our interdisciplinary program combines the outstanding resources in biomedical and clinical sciences at UCSF with the excellence in engineering, physical, and life sciences at Berkeley.

Administered by the Department of Bioengineering at UC Berkeley and the Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences at UCSF, all students in the program are simultaneously enrolled in the graduate divisions of both the San Francisco and Berkeley campuses and are free to take advantage of courses and research opportunities on both campuses. The program awards the PhD in Bioengineering degree from both campuses.

The Department of Computer Science offers graduate programs that are in partnership with a few Departments at Stanford University. Graduate scholars have an opportunity to pursue dual degrees in CS, Law, and/or Business Administration. If a student is interested in applying to these Master's or PhD programs, they must secure permission from both academic units to pursue degrees in those units as part of the joint degree program.

Enables students to pursue a Master of Business Administration at the Graduate School of Business (GSB) and a Master of Science in Computer Science at the Stanford School of Engineering simultaneously.

Enables students to pursue a Law Degree at the Stanford School of Law (SLS) and a Master of Science in Computer Science at the Stanford School of Engineering simultaneously.

Enables students to pursue a Law Degree at the Stanford School of Law (SLS) and a PhD in Computer Science at the Stanford School of Engineering simultaneously.

Ph.D. Program

Curriculum requirements.

Completion of the Ph.D. degree requires fulfillment of the following coursework. Examples of courses that meet these requirements can be found here .

Core Engineering Courses Students are required to satisfactorily complete (grade B or better) six credit hours (typically two courses) of engineering-centric courses.

Core Bio/Medicine Courses Students are required to satisfactorily complete (grade B or better) six credit hours to meet the physiology requirement.

• BIOL 451: Comparative Physiology (offered at UNC), or PHY 503: General Physiology I (offered at NC State), or PHY 504: General Physiology II (offered at NC State)
• BMME890/BME790: Biochemistry

Mathematics Students are required to satisfactorily complete (grade B or better) three credit hours (typically one course) of graduate-level mathematics or applied mathematics.

Statistics Students are required to satisfactorily complete (grade B or better) three credit hours (typically one course) of a graduate-level statistics course.

Technical Electives Students must satisfactorily complete (grade B or better) nine credit hours (typically three courses) of graduate-level science or engineering. Courses pertinent to the student’s areas of interest are selected with the approval of the research adviser.

BME Graduate Seminar Students are required to enroll every semester in BME 802/BMME 890: BME Graduate Seminar . M.D./Ph.D. students are exempt during the clinical portion of their training. A list of upcoming seminars can be found here .

Ethics Students must pass a course in research ethics. This may be satisfied by completion of one credit hour courses PHI 816: Introduction to Research Ethics (NC State), GRAD 721: Research Ethics (UNC), or the online Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Good Clinical Practices for Clinical Trials with Investigational Drugs, Biologics and Devices course module.

Professional Development Seminar Students must enroll in the professional development seminar (BME 802/BMME 890) in the spring of the second year.

Mentored Teaching Experience Students will participate in a required mentored teaching experience in the third year of graduate study.

Ph.D. Timeline

1. pass the written qualifying exams by the end of the first year, 2. select a primary adviser and laboratory by the end of the second semester, 3. develop a plan of work by the end of the first year, 4. form an advisory committee by the end of the second year, 5. write a research proposal and pass the oral preliminary exam by the end of the third year, 6. write doctoral dissertation and pass dissertation defense, how to apply through unc or nc state.

Because our department is truly joint and BME Graduate degrees are from both universities, applications to the doctoral program submitted through UNC and NC State graduate schools are processed identically. All applications, regardless of submission origin, are evaluated equally by the Joint graduate admissions committee and the Joint Department’s graduate faculty . Therefore, students submitting applications to the doctoral program may do so through either campus equivalently.

Applicants must submit the following:

• Transcript(s) documenting an undergraduate or graduate degree in engineering or a quantitative science.
• GRE scores are not required.  However, if applicants choose to send in their scores, they may do so. Please note that scores from the GRE general exam must be taken within the last five years. UNC institution code: #5816. NC State institution code: #5496 
• Three recommendation letters that discuss your potential for graduate study.
• TOEFL scores (international applicants only).
• A 1–2 page personal statement discussing research interests and relevant background experience. The statement should identify professors within the department with whom you are interested in working.

Department of Speech, Language & Hearing Sciences

Combined master of science/phd in speech-language pathology.

Study the neurological processes involved in speech recognition. Discover what happens in the mind of an infant about to speak his first words. Advance our understanding of treating language disorders in patients who have aphasia. Or ask a fascinating new question about human communication processes and begin your own search for the answer.

If you are an exceptional student with a bachelor’s degree who wants to pursue a career in speech-language pathology with a focus on research, you may qualify for this innovative, combined MS/PhD program. For the first two years, you will focus on meeting the requirements for the MS-SLP degree and will graduate with this degree at the end of two years of study.  If you complete all of the MS-SLP academic and clinical requirements with a GPA of 3.5 and a thesis, you’ll be formally admitted to the doctoral program. After completing a year of core topics and research design coursework, you’ll work with your selected research mentor to complete a qualifying research project and begin your dissertation research.

You’ll get broad clinical experience, on campus and off

Starting in your first semester, your clinical practicum courses will give you the broadest possible exposure to patients across the lifespan with communication disorders at all levels of severity. You’ll work in many settings, too, from early intervention to nursing homes, from schools to private practice.

This breadth of experience is possible for two reasons. First, Sargent College operates its own clinical centers right on campus. Our graduate students, supervised by faculty practitioners, treat groups and individuals from the Boston community at the Academic Speech, Language & Hearing Center . Specialized clinics, such as the Aphasia Resource Center , provide greater depth of experience with specific disorders.

Secondly, our location in a world-class medical hub gives us access to premiere institutions like Massachusetts General Hospital and Children’s Hospital Boston for student internships. Our students learn from and work with master clinicians at the city’s most respected medical facilities.

A PhD in Speech-Language Pathology will prepare you for a leadership position in the field. Earn a J.D. and a Master’s Degree Simultaneously

In addition to separate graduate and law degrees, St. Mary’s University School of Law and St. Mary’s University also offer a joint program of studies leading to degrees of Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) and select Master of Arts, the Online MBA for Professionals, and Master of Public Administration.

The joint degree program allows a student to complete the requirements for both degrees in three to four years . This is accomplished by six to twelve hours of law credit being transferred as elective credit to the appropriate master’s degree and six hours of master’s credit being transferred as elective credit toward the J.D. degree.

Students must complete a minimum of 24 semester hours of master’s level courses at St. Mary’s University, exclusive of prerequisites.

Course of Study

The first year of academic work for a law student pursuing a joint degree consists entirely of law courses. During the second and third years, law and master’s degree courses are taken. Depending on the specific requirements of the master’s degree program, a student ordinarily can earn both a law degree and a master’s degree in three or four years.

An interested applicant must gain admission to both the School of Law and a graduate program, which make separate admissions decisions. Application to a graduate program may be made after the student begins law school.

Joint Degree Options

J.d./online mba for professionals.

Students obtain a Doctor of Jurisprudence and Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the same time. The joint J.D./MBA program is designed for students who wish to serve as counsel to corporations or specialize in business and commercial law.

Students must apply and be admitted to the law school as a J.D. student and successfully complete at least one semester of law school before applying to be admitted into the Online MBA for Professionals.

J.D./M.A. in English Literature and Language

The St. Mary’s School of Law and College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences offer a joint program of study leading to the degrees of Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) and Master of Arts in English Literature and Language. The joint degree program allows a student to complete the requirements for both degrees in three to four years.

Admission to the joint program requires application to both schools, although application to graduate programs need not be made until the student begins law school. Upon successful application to both programs, students work with the graduate program director and the law school to coordinate student scheduling for completion of both degree programs.

J.D./M.A. in International Relations (MAIR)

Due to the internationalization of relations among the countries of the world, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and the globalization of the world’s economy, there is an increased need for lawyers who have an international perspective on the practice of law.

Among the courses offered in the International Relations program are Ethical Issues in International Relations, International Law and Treaties, International Political Economy, Human Rights, and Border Security and Immigration Policy.

J.D./Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.)

Controversies concerning the utilization of natural resources, land use (zoning, planning, and economic development), labor relations, the administration of justice, and civil rights all illustrate the importance of law in the public sector. Associate Professor Emily Fowler Hartigan is the J.D./M.P.A. adviser.

Among the courses offered in the master’s in Public Administration program are Social Responsibility and Business Environment, Financial Policies, Management and Organization Development, Organizational Behavior, and Urban Political Institutions and Processes.

J.D./M.A. in Theology

The program is especially suited for students who wish to pursue a legal career as a form of ministry. Among the courses offered in the Master’s of Theology program are Foundational Moral Theology Ethics, Ecology and Christian Ethics, Dynamics of Spiritual Life, Marriage and the Family, Theology of Human Sexuality, and Principles of Theological Method.

Joint MBA/Schmalkalden Master of Arts

The St. Mary’s University Greehey School of Business and  Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences  in Schmalkalden, Germany, invite students to participate in a joint degree program. This is a two-year, full-time program.

The Schmalkalden University Dual Degree Program is open to students in the Online MBA for Professionals program.

Phd program overview.

The PhD program prepares students for research careers in probability and statistics in academia and industry. Students admitted to the PhD program earn the MA and MPhil along the way. The first year of the program is spent on foundational courses in theoretical statistics, applied statistics, and probability. In the following years, students take advanced topics courses. Research toward the dissertation typically begins in the second year. Students also have opportunities to take part in a wide variety of projects involving applied probability or applications of statistics.

Students are expected to register continuously until they distribute and successfully defend their dissertation. Our core required and elective curricula in Statistics, Probability, and Machine Learning aim to provide our doctoral students with advanced learning that is both broad and focused. We expect our students to make Satisfactory Academic Progress in their advanced learning and research training by meeting the following program milestones through courseworks, independent research, and dissertation research:

By the end of year 1: passing the qualifying exams;

By the end of year 2: fulfilling all course requirements for the MA degree and finding a dissertation advisor;

By the end of year 3: passing the oral exam (dissertation prospectus) and fulfilling all requirements for the MPhil degree

By the end of year 5: distributing and defending the dissertation.

We believe in the Professional Development value of active participation in intellectual exchange and pedagogical practices for future statistical faculty and researchers. Students are required to serve as teaching assistants and present research during their training. In addition, each student is expected to attend seminars regularly and participate in Statistical Practicum activities before graduation.

Also included are policies that outline how these requirements will be enforced with ample flexibility. • Suggested Prerequisites: A student admitted to the PhD program normally has a background in linear algebra and real analysis, and has taken a few courses in statistics, probability, and programming. Students who are quantitatively trained or have substantial background/experience in other scientific disciplines are also encouraged to apply for admission.
• GRE requirement: Waived for Fall 2024.
• Language requirement: The English Proficiency Test requirement (TOEFL) is a Provost's requirement that cannot be waived.
• The Columbia GSAS minimum requirements for TOEFL and IELTS are: 100 (IBT), 600 (PBT) TOEFL, or 7.5 IELTS. To see if this requirement can be waived for you, please check the frequently asked questions below.

• Application process: Please apply by completing the Application for Admission to the Columbia University Graduate School of Arts & Sciences .
• Timeline: P.hD students begin the program in September only.  Admissions decisions are made in mid-March of each year for the Fall semester.

Frequently Asked Questions

• What is the application deadline? What is the deadline for financial aid? Our application deadline is January 5, 2024 .
• Can I meet with you in person or talk to you on the phone? Unfortunately given the high number of applications we receive, we are unable to meet or speak with our applicants.
• What are the required application materials? Specific admission requirements for our programs can be found here .
• Due to financial hardship, I cannot pay the application fee, can I still apply to your program? Yes. Many of our prospective students are eligible for fee waivers. The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences offers a variety of application fee waivers . If you have further questions regarding the waiver please contact  gsas-admissions@ columbia.edu .
• How many students do you admit each year? It varies year to year. We finalize our numbers between December - early February.
• What is the distribution of students currently enrolled in your program? (their background, GPA, standard tests, etc)? Unfortunately, we are unable to share this information.
• How many accepted students receive financial aid? All students in the PhD program receive, for up to five years, a funding package consisting of tuition, fees, and a stipend. These fellowships are awarded in recognition of academic achievement and in expectation of scholarly success; they are contingent upon the student remaining in good academic standing. Summer support, while not guaranteed, is generally provided. Teaching and research experience are considered important aspects of the training of graduate students. Thus, graduate fellowships include some teaching and research apprenticeship. PhD students are given funds to purchase a laptop PC, and additional computing resources are supplied for research projects as necessary. The Department also subsidizes travel expenses for up to two scientific meetings and/or conferences per year for those students selected to present. Additional matching funds from the Graduate School Arts and Sciences are available to students who have passed the oral qualifying exam.
• Can I contact the department with specific scores and get feedback on my competitiveness for the program? We receive more than 450 applications a year and there are many students in our applicant pool who are qualified for our program. However, we can only admit a few top students. Before seeing the entire applicant pool, we cannot comment on admission probabilities.
• What is the minimum GPA for admissions? While we don’t have a GPA threshold, we will carefully review applicants’ transcripts and grades obtained in individual courses.
• Is there a minimum GRE requirement? No. The general GRE exam is waived for the Fall 2024 admissions cycle. 
• Can I upload a copy of my GRE score to the application? Yes, but make sure you arrange for ETS to send the official score to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
• Is the GRE math subject exam required? No, we do not require the GRE math subject exam.
• What is the minimum TOEFL or IELTS  requirement? The Columbia Graduate School of Arts and Sciences minimum requirements for TOEFL and IELTS are: 100 (IBT), 600 (PBT) TOEFL, or 7.5 IELTS
•  I took the TOEFL and IELTS more than two years ago; is my score valid? Scores more than two years old are not accepted. Applicants are strongly urged to make arrangements to take these examinations early in the fall and before completing their application.
• I am an international student and earned a master’s degree from a US university. Can I obtain a TOEFL or IELTS waiver? You may only request a waiver of the English proficiency requirement from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences by submitting the English Proficiency Waiver Request form and if you meet any of the criteria described here . If you have further questions regarding the waiver please contact  gsas-admissions@ columbia.edu .
• My transcript is not in English. What should I do? You have to submit a notarized translated copy along with the original transcript.

Can I apply to more than one PhD program? You may not submit more than one PhD application to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. However, you may elect to have your application reviewed by a second program or department within the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences if you are not offered admission by your first-choice program. Please see the application instructions for a more detailed explanation of this policy and the various restrictions that apply to a second choice. You may apply concurrently to a program housed at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and to programs housed at other divisions of the University. However, since the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences does not share application materials with other divisions, you must complete the application requirements for each school.

How do I apply to a dual- or joint-degree program? The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences refers to these programs as dual-degree programs. Applicants must complete the application requirements for both schools. Application materials are not shared between schools. Students can only apply to an established dual-degree program and may not create their own.

With the sole exception of approved dual-degree programs , students may not pursue a degree in more than one Columbia program concurrently, and may not be registered in more than one degree program at any institution in the same semester. Enrollment in another degree program at Columbia or elsewhere while enrolled in a Graduate School of Arts and Sciences master's or doctoral program is strictly prohibited by the Graduate School. Violation of this policy will lead to the rescission of an offer of admission, or termination for a current student.

When will I receive a decision on my application? Notification of decisions for all PhD applicants generally takes place by the end of March.

Notification of MA decisions varies by department and application deadlines. Some MA decisions are sent out in early spring; others may be released as late as mid-August.

Can I apply to both MA Statistics and PhD statistics simultaneously?  For any given entry term, applicants may elect to apply to up to two programs—either one PhD program and one MA program, or two MA programs—by submitting a single (combined) application to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.  Applicants who attempt to submit more than one Graduate School of Arts and Sciences application for the same entry term will be required to withdraw one of the applications.

The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences permits applicants to be reviewed by a second program if they do not receive an offer of admission from their first-choice program, with the following restrictions:

• This option is only available for fall-term applicants.
• Applicants will be able to view and opt for a second choice (if applicable) after selecting their first choice. Applicants should not submit a second application. (Note: Selecting a second choice will not affect the consideration of your application by your first choice.)
• Applicants must upload a separate Statement of Purpose and submit any additional supporting materials required by the second program. Transcripts, letters, and test scores should only be submitted once.
• An application will be forwarded to the second-choice program only after the first-choice program has completed its review and rendered its decision. An application file will not be reviewed concurrently by both programs.
• Programs may stop considering second-choice applications at any time during the season; Graduate School of Arts and Sciences cannot guarantee that your application will receive a second review.
• What is the mailing address for your PhD admission office? Students are encouraged to apply online . Please note: Materials should not be mailed to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences unless specifically requested by the Office of Admissions. Unofficial transcripts and other supplemental application materials should be uploaded through the online application system. • How many years does it take to pursue a PhD degree in your program? Our students usually graduate in 4‐6 years.
• Can the PhD be pursued part-time? No, all of our students are full-time students. We do not offer a part-time option.
• One of the requirements is to have knowledge of linear algebra (through the level of MATH V2020 at Columbia) and advanced calculus (through the level of MATH V1201). I studied these topics; how do I know if I meet the knowledge content requirement? We interview our top candidates and based on the information on your transcripts and your grades, if we are not sure about what you covered in your courses we will ask you during the interview.
• Can I contact faculty members to learn more about their research and hopefully gain their support? Yes, you are more than welcome to contact faculty members and discuss your research interests with them. However, please note that all the applications are processed by a central admission committee, and individual faculty members cannot and will not guarantee admission to our program.
• How do I find out which professors are taking on new students to mentor this year?  Applications are evaluated through a central admissions committee. Openings in individual faculty groups are not considered during the admissions process. Therefore, we suggest contacting the faculty members you would like to work with and asking if they are planning to take on new students.

Johns Hopkins graduate programs again ranked among nation's best

'u.s. news & world report' includes 38 jhu programs among the top 10 in the u.s. in its annual rankings, including no. 1 ranked programs in nursing and public health.

Johns Hopkins University has 38 graduate schools, academic programs, and specialties ranked among the top 10 in the nation, including nine with No. 1 rankings, according to the latest edition of "Best Graduate Schools" from U.S. News & World Report , published earlier today.

Two schools at Hopkins—the Bloomberg School of Public Health and the School of Nursing —earned No. 1 rankings overall, and the School of Education entered the top 10, according to U.S. News & World Report .

Portions of the publication's annual list were released today but rankings for schools of medicine and engineering were delayed and will be released at a later date.

Among the new rankings released today:

The School of Nursing's DNP program ranked No. 1 for the third year in a row. Its master's degree programs tied at No. 1, up from No. 2 last year. In gerontology, the school moved up two spots to No. 1 for primary care, and up one spot to No. 2 for acute care. In other specialty areas, the School of Nursing's doctoral programs ranked:

• Psychiatric/mental health: No. 1
• Family: No. 3 (tied)
• Leadership: No. 4 (tied)
• Nursing Anesthesia: No. 36 (tie)

Public Health

The Bloomberg School retained its longtime No. 1 overall ranking among public health programs—it has held the top spot since 1994, the year the rankings began. In specialty areas, the Bloomberg School ranked:

• Environmental Health Sciences: No. 1
• Epidemiology: No. 1
• Health Policy and Management (Public Health): No. 1
• Social and Behavioral Sciences: No. 1
• Biostatistics: No. 2

Johns Hopkins tied at No. 8 in the Education category, up from No. 13 last year. The school also tied at No. 23 in higher education administration programs.

Public Affairs

Overall, Johns Hopkins programs in public affairs tied at No. 39. In subcategories, Johns Hopkins tied at No. 6 in Health Policy and Management (Public Affairs), No. 11 in International/Global Policy and Administration, and tied at No. 35 in Public Policy Analysis.

U.S. News & World Report updates some of its rankings each year and republishes the most recent rankings in other areas. Among the republished rankings for Hopkins, which are still current:

Biological Sciences

Hopkins is tied for No. 6 overall with six top 10 specialty rankings:

• Molecular biology: No. 3 (tie)
• Cell biology: No. 4
• Neuroscience: No. 4 (tie)
• Immunology: No. 5
• Genetics, genomics, and bioinformatics: No. 6 (tie)
• Biochemistry, biophysics, and structural biology: No. 8

Biostatistics

Hopkins is ranked No. 1 (tie) for Biostatistics at the doctoral level. (Note: U.S. News & World Report also ranks biostatistics as a sub-category of public health, where Hopkins is No. 2.)

The university is tied at No. 20 in Chemistry and ranks No. 9 in the Biochemistry subcategory.

Computer Science

The university is tied for No. 24 overall and tied at No. 21 in the specialty of Artificial Intelligence.

Earth Sciences

The university is tied at No. 30 in Earth Sciences.

Johns Hopkins' program in economics is tied at No. 22.

English tied at No. 13 overall with the following specialty rankings:

• Literary criticism and theory: No. 3
• British literature: No. 10 (tie)
• American literature after 1865: No. 17

Health Care Management

The university is No. 7.

Johns Hopkins ranks No. 10 overall, with the following specialty rankings:

Overall, sociology is tied at No. 29. The sub-category of sociology of population is tied at No. 17.

University of Houston Lands 18 Programs in Latest QS World University Rankings

The University of Houston is, once again, demonstrating its strength as a global leader. UH has 18 programs ranked among the top in the world according to the 2024 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject , released today by QS Quacquarelli Symonds.

UH’s hospitality programs in the Conrad N. Hilton College of Global Hospitality Leadership led the way with a world rank of No. 35. The petroleum engineering program in the Cullen College of Engineering also ranked in the top 100 worldwide (51-100).

In its annual list, QS evaluated 55 narrow academic disciplines and five broad faculty areas by analyzing the reputation and research output of almost 5,000 institutions worldwide. In total, it provides independent comparative analysis on the performance of more than 16,400 individual university programs in 96 locations around the world.

“We are pleased to have yet one more accolade confirming the quality of our programs. Our faculty members are at the forefront of groundbreaking research spanning various fields, positioning UH as a global leader in advancing societal progress and fostering innovation,” said Diane Z. Chase, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost.

In addition to the 18 individual subjects that were ranked, UH’s earned an overall world ranking in three of the five broad disciplines: engineering and technology, natural sciences, and social sciences and management.

Using five key metrics— academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations, research impact and cross-border research collaboration. Of the almost 5,000 institutions evaluated, fewer than a third of the institutions earned a published world ranking. The U.S. led the rankings with 213 institutions, followed by the United Kingdom (103) and China (101).

“QS’ analysis of performance trends across nearly 16,000 university departments worldwide continues to illuminate factors influencing the quality of higher education institutions globally,” said QS senior vice president Ben Sowter. “An international outlook remains paramount, manifested through diversity of students, faculty body and research relationships. Additionally, universities experiencing upward mobility have benefited from sustained, targeted investment, highlighting the importance of government support. Meanwhile, the development of partnerships with industry correlates with improved performance in employment and research.”

Groundwater Depletion in Santa Clara Valley Over the Most Recent Drought in California inferred from Sentinel-1 InSAR Deformation

Groundwater resources play a crucial role in the Santa Clara Valley (SCV) where almost half of the water used is pumped from aquifers. This reliance on groundwater is expected to increase in the future with climate change increasing the frequency and intensity of droughts, and thus, reducing the surface water resources. As such, any tool that helps to better manage the groundwater resources in the SCV can be extremely beneficial. In this presentation, we demonstrate InSAR as a viable tool which can help with better management of groundwater extraction, storage, and recharge assessing the success of managed aquifer recharge. We first demonstrate that groundwater dynamics in deep aquifer layers below 120 m mainly drive vertical deformation in the SCV. We then build on this strong correlation to calibrate the aquifer’s mechanical properties using InSAR data. The calibrated aquifer mechanical properties, along with the InSAR data, can then be used to quantify the impact of droughts on groundwater depletion in the SCV at a high spatial and temporal resolution (i.e., 100 m and weekly). We also examine the impact of the most recent California droughts on groundwater depletion and subsidence in the SCV. We show that, from 2019 to 2021, Santa Clara County subsided up to 30 mm, and groundwater levels dropped by as much as 18 m. We show that the subsidence caused by groundwater depletion during the drought remained elastic (recoverable) thanks to the managed aquifer recharge by the SCV Water District. Our results demonstrate how InSAR data can provide helpful information for the operational management of groundwater resources and ensure recoverable land subsidence, particularly during severe drought.
