The Jazz Greats: 3 Books Offer Intimate Portraits

BY Tom Beer • May 8, 2024

Self-satisfied pundits have been declaring jazz dead since at least the 1970s. But extraordinary new artists keep coming along to prove the pundits wrong; just take the example of Samara Joy , who wowed critics and audiences with her debut album, Linger Awhile . Recorded when she was just 22, the album won legions of fans, many of them new to this musical art form, and Joy won the award for best new artist at the 2023 Grammys—proving that jazz was very much alive and kicking, thank you.

About the authors

Phyllis haddox.

Dr. Phyllis Haddox, is co-author of Teach Your Child To Read In 100 Easy Lessons with Siegfried Engelmann (1931-2019, originator of the Direct Instruction programs and teaching approach) and Elaine Bruner. Dr. Haddox has fully revised, expanded and updated the book for its second edition. On her website, www.startreading.com, she has made available FREE her VIDEOS (segments for training, demonstration, and information) and printable SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIAL (sounds cards, word cards, progress chart, and much more) that she created for Teach Your Child To Read In 100 Easy Lessons. (Her videos may also be seen on YouTube.)

Phyllis began her career in education as a classroom teacher and then reading specialist in California. Later at the University of Oregon, she provided hands-on training to undergraduate and graduate students in supervisory, teaching and management techniques. As an educational consultant she worked extensively in the United States (including Hawaii), Canada, and the Caribbean directly with students (preschool through college level), teachers, administrators and parents. She provided needs assessment, evaluated curriculum implementation, and designed management and teacher support systems for schools, districts, and agencies. Nationally and internationally she has been a workshop presenter who trained thousands of teachers and paraprofessionals (including tutors) to use Direct Instruction techniques and programs. Some tutors created their own very successful business after learning from her how to use Teach Your Child To Read In 100 Easy Lessons. In addition to Teach Your Child To Read In 100 Easy Lessons, she co-authored with Engelmann Thinking Basics and Concept Applications (published by McGraw-Hill as part of the Corrective Reading Series). Dr. Haddox assisted in the development of science and mathematics laserdisc series and has produced more than 20 reading training videos. Dr. Haddox has also worked as an instructional design consultant for the Mayo Clinic on training videos and for author, Barbara Sher, for two of her books (Live the Life You Love and It's Never Too Late, If You Start Now).

Dr. Haddox was the Director of the University of Oregon's Direct Instruction Model of the federally-funded Follow Through Project. This project has been called the "largest education experiment ever conducted." It provided a broad range comparison of 13 major educational approaches used in 170 communities with 75,000 children each year. Data was collected by Stanford Research Institute and analyzed by Abt Associates. The result of the comparison was that students in the U of O's Direct Instruction Model achieved the highest performance level in language, reading, math, and spelling as well as emotional well-being. Project sites managed by Phyllis were labeled "exemplary” by the United States Office of Education's Joint Dissemination/Review Panel.

Phyllis is actively retired and lives in Eugene, Oregon. She responds to inquires and testimonials (from her website, www.startreading.com) and volunteers with non-profit organizations. She enjoys interacting with family and friends, learning, reading, and gardening.

Had a wonderful day at the spa! Everyone was terrific from the front desk, Paris M and Gianna P, the spa therapists Julianna and Marissa. Don't second guess it; Go and enjoy!

Just had a hydra-facial with Cassandra. What a wonderful experience! She is very knowledgeable and took great care with my skin. I look forward to my next visit to the Arizona Biltmore and another facial with Cassandra.

Photo of Rebecca R.

I have had two outstanding facials with Cassandra and I will keep coming back to see her. She has a warm, peaceful, and welcoming presence. I pepper her with questions during the treatment and she does a fantastic job educating me on what she's doing and how I can improve my skincare game at home. Both times I've left feeling relaxed, rejuvenated, and my face is glowing. She is a wonderful human being and very skilled at what she does. Looking forward to returning!

I had an amazing Lucid Awakening massage. It was about an hour massage and chakra balancing with an incredible foot exfoliation and shea butter moisturizing foot massage along with the head massage. I am spa junky and this was one of the best!

We did a few services at the Spa. Check in at the spa was not met well with Giana. She was very rude multiple times and seemed very bothered with helping the clientele. The prices are typical resort prices but I do not feel like it was money well spent. The spa itself is beautiful and it was such a let down. My hair service ran 15 minutes behind, which was no problem, until she tried to rush my hair appointment and completed my hair from 1:15-1:42. I asked her if I could please have some curls added to my hair. I wasn't asked once how I would like my hair styled and it was an $80 blowout. She then curled my hair and I left at 2:08 which was the amount of time that I paid for. I would not recommend the spa and unfortunately we will not be back for services here.

My visit to Tierra Luna was incredible. My cousins and I spent the weekend at the Biltmore and booked massages for Saturday morning. We checked in early and we're given a tour of the facility and immediately offered herbal tea. After changing into our robes and sandals we lounged by the fireplace with our tea and waited for our massages. I did a 90 minute chakra massage and was very pleased with the massage and experience. The gentlemen that did the massage used specific massage oils associated with each chakra and crystals to open up my chakras as part of the massage. When it was finished he asked me what chakra I felt the biggest impact with and then he left that specific crystal for me to keep. It was really cool. Everything is beautifully designed and the aesthetic is so pleasing. It has an incredible Arizona/desert/southwest vibe in the coolest way. I loved the gardens and the many different lounge areas to reflect and spend time. A spa hot tub or a plunge pool would have been nice. Obviously those things are available on the hotel grounds but to have one in the spa garden would've taken my experience to the next level. The entire experience was incredible and one I would love to repeat. I don't know when I'll be back to the Biltmore but when I am there, I'll definitely book a spa treatment at Tierra Luna.

I went to this spa while I was staying at the Biltmore. Unfortunately, the facilities were subpar considering it's a Waldorf hotel spa. The outside area was extremely beautiful they didn't have much else to offer. All they had was a hot and cold pool, anda steam room in the locker room. Having been to other spas across the country, this spa was so-so. My massage was extremely enjoyable but my facial was average.

Photo of Caitlin M.

Not a great experience. A couple of interactions with the staff left a bad taste in our mouths. The outdoor space wasn't particularly relaxing, as the doors slam heavily and there were several groups being particularly loud - felt like we were at a public pool. In the locker room multiple people had confusion with their bracelet system and it affected the overall vibe. We booked two of the same services on the same reservation and one of us got extras that weren't communicated to the other, so it made us feel pretty awkward. When we gave feedback at the front desk, they argued with each other in front of us and then tried to gaslight us, despite the fact we were clear we were paying the full amount but just wanted to note feedback. I've been to many spas that don't tout themselves as "fancy" as this one, and received much better service with a more relaxing experience. We will never go back - there are too many other options in this area for them to charge that much for a subpar quality of experience and less-than-professional staff. The cushions and chairs throughout could also use a good cleaning or replacement.

Photo of Alexis D.

Great experience excellent massage, the massage therapist was lovely. They were very accommodating all the appointments seemed book, up and they still were able to fit me in which isn't a guarantee but it was so great! I was treated so well for my birthday I would definitely go back again on my next visit!

We have so many great spa options in Phoenix. When my regular resort spa was fully booked, I decided to give the spa at the Biltmore a try. It has been years since I've been to the spa and wowza, what a different experience. It's a beautiful spa with a large relaxation room and a large outdoor lounging area. The men's locker room is large, modern and immaculate. The only ding is the abscence of deodorant etc. I wish I had known that the spa was brand new! Massages at a resort spa can be an expensive hit or miss. I prefer deep pressure and had an excellent massage from Matt. No chit-chat, just a great massage that he modified with some lomi-lomi techniques. One of the best resort massages I've ever had!
