450 Words Essay on Sportsmanship

essay on true sportsmanship

Sportsmanship does not mean only taking part in sports and playing the game in conformity with the rules prescribed, but also playing the game of life in the spirit imbibed on the playing fields.

A true sportsman is he who observes all those rules in life which he has been taught to observe in games. One who has achieved skill or proficiency in games but does not learn to apply the principles of sports to life in general does not deserve to be called a sportsman.

On the contrary, a man who gives evidence of possessing a sporting spirit in games is still a sportsman. Usually those who play games develop into true sportsmen because their character is molded by the training they are given on the field.

It implies fair play. Just in games if any player plays foul, the side to which he belongs is penalized, similarly in the bigger game of life one must always be fair in one’s dealings with others.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

Fairness, honesty, integrity, openness of heart and frankness -these are the qualities that a sportsman must display in life. One should not practice deception, should not bluff, should not cheat others and should indulge in diplomacy or humility. A sportsman never takes undue advantage of the weakness of his adversary nor does he hit below the belt.

The art implies obedience to the leader. In games the players have to obey their captain and yield to him on points on which they are in disagreement with him. They must repose the fullest confidence in him. In life too, a sportsman yields to his superior even if he does not agree with him. Respect for discipline is an essential part of sportsmanship.

Team spirit is another important element of sportsmanship. In games the various players must cooperate with one another if they wish to win a match. Without mutual co-operation success is impossible. Similarly in whatever sphere of life one may be, one must aid and be aided by one’s friends if one is a true sportsman.

Sportsmanship consists in working in full harmony with others. In cooperation indeed lies strength. Wherever a common aim binds a number of people together, they must display their sportsmanship by working harmoniously, without friction or mutual jealousy.

Finally, the spirit of sportsmanship demands cheerfulness even in the face of a defeat. When two players play a tennis match, the loser does not cherish any grudge against the winner. In fact the loser congratulates his opponent on his success and shakes hands with him.

Fair play, respect for discipline, recognition of the need for teamwork and cheerfulness even in the event of defeat are thus the dominant marks of a sportsman. Sportsmanship is worthy of admiration

How to Write an Essay on Sportsmanship

How to Write an Essay on Sportsmanship

There’s a lot more involved when it comes to sportsmanship than simply taking part in a specific kind of sport or to merely comply with the rules of the game. Real sportsmanship is a way of life and it is showing fairness and integrity also when it comes to other issues of life. Therefore it could be said that someone who are clearly exhibiting a high level of sportsmanship is also a person who are maintaining a high level of morality in all other areas of life and not only when competing on the sports field. We often see highly competent athletes that compete exceptionally well on the sports field but they are complete failures when it comes to the game of life and the general opinion is that such people does not bring honor to Write an Essay on Sportsmanship. It is always a pleasure to see a person which is exhibiting a high level of sportsmanship when competing on the sports field. It often happens that someone who becomes involved in some kind of sport, eventually develop into a real sportsmen. This is because as they grow as competitors they go through a transformation because of those experiences on the sports field.Let’s check how to Write an Essay on Sportsmanship.

Fair play and sportsmanship goes hand in hand

It is very often seen in professional sports that competitors goes beyond the reasonable requirements of the game and they will not hesitate to engage in things which is known as professional fouls as long as that will provide them with some benefit over the opposition. However this is not the actions of a real sportsman. This is exactly why foul play on the sports field will always lead to a penalty and likewise this is also what happens in civilian life. Those who continually break the rules is not sportsman and at some time or another they are penalized for their actions. Someone who has not grown up in an environment where they were exposed to qualities such as integrity, honesty, frankness, fairness and similar qualities could find it significantly more difficult to become true sportsman which are able to display all of these aforementioned qualities both in their private life and also on the sports field. They should never be deceit or dishonesty among to sportsman but they should be people with inherent humility and also diplomacy to allow them to contribute both on the sports field and also away from it.

May never compromise

A true sportsman will always hold themselves to highest levels of morality and integrity and therefore they will never take advantage of the weaknesses of those they encounter and they will be perfectly fair in all of their dealings. Their real sportsmen understands the need to submit to those in authority such as the leader or the captain of the team or the supervisor or manager in the business world. To Write an Essay on Sportsmanship, the need to take instruction from those leaders and to comply with all their desires even if they are not convinced that doing so is the best action to take. They should keep on trusting in the abilities of those leaders and once again this will apply to the sports field and also to the corporate world. There is no compromise when it comes to discipline as far as sport or business is concerned because respect for discipline is an integral part of sportsmanship. Likewise the unity of the team will always be important to the true sportsman. Without that unity in a team it will be difficult and even impossible to win any match. Any professional sports team who regularly competes on the highest levels is fully aware that everyone needs to work together towards the common goal if they are going to be successful as a team. This same thing is also true in the corporate world and in most areas of life where effective cooperation is essential in order to achieve success and expressing this kind of attitude is the mark of a true sportsman.

Harmony between people

Without harmony between people and between members of a team it will be difficult to claim genuine sportsmanship because that is one of the identifying characteristics of real sportsmanship. An old boer general was famous for saying, unity is strength and this is most certainly true when it comes to success both in life and also in sports. When success is desired either in life or in competitive sports, unity and harmony will be necessary and negative things such as jealousy or other kinds of conflict must be put aside because doing so will be the true indication of sportsmanship. However when a team of genuine sportsman have done everything possible and they have competed to the best of their ability and those efforts still result in defeat, then that result must still be accepted cheerfully and with a positive attitude because this is the way in which to sportsman do things. Likewise in a one-on-one sports such as boxing, tennis or wrestling the loser accepts defeat with good grace without harboring any grudge against the person who was victorious. In fact the loser even goes beyond that and he wholeheartedly congratulates the victor, shakes hands with them and wish them the best for the future. This is simply how an excellent sportsman conduct himself and how he chooses to live his life on a day to day basis.

Hope these techniques to Write an Essay on Sportsmanship really worked  for you.

Teaching Children Good Sportsmanship

Parents and kids alike love sports, and it's easy to get caught up in a game and become focused on winning. Yet there is much more to be gained from the sports experience than a winning record. When children and teens are involved in sports, they are able to learn and put into practice values that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

Good sportsmanship is one of the life lessons that children can learn from sports. You can help your children understand and value good sportsmanship while making sure they have a safe and fun sports experience.

Good sportsmanship may seem hard to define, but its hallmarks include being able to win without gloating, respecting one's opponents, and being able to lose gracefully. Here are some important principles to instill in your children:

If you lose, don't make up excuses.

If you win, don't rub it in.

Learn from mistakes and get back in the game.

Always do your best.

If someone else makes a mistake, remain encouraging and avoid criticizing.

Show respect for yourself, your team, and the officials of the game.

Parents are important role models, so let your children see you upholding these principles, whether you play a sport yourself or root for your child's team from the sidelines.

Tips for teaching good sportsmanship

Good sportsmanship includes following certain guidelines for good behavior. Share these concepts with your children:

Follow the rules of the game. It might seem easier to win by doing things a different way (cheating), but everyone has to follow the rules. Explain to your child that rules are created so that sports can be played in an organized way.

Avoid arguing. Stay focused on the game instead of giving in to anger with teammates, coaches, or referees. Always avoid using bad language and negative words.

Everyone should have a chance to play. In youth sports, it's important to encourage even those players who are the least skilled to have fun playing in the game. Parents, coaches, and even other players have an important role in allowing less talented teammates time to participate.

Play fair. Good sportsmen want to win because they followed the rules and played the best game they could. Never support any effort to win that attempts to go around the rules. Cheating is not acceptable.

Follow directions. Emphasize the importance of listening to coaches and referees and following their directions while on the field and involved in team activities.

Respect the other team. Whether your team wins or loses, it's important to show respect for the effort of the other team. If the other team wins, accept defeat, acknowledge their abilities, and move on. If your team wins, resist bragging—that's what it means to be a gracious winner.

Encourage teammates. Team sports work best when each individual supports the team. Praise teammates for what they do well and encourage them when they make mistakes. Avoid criticism and unkind actions. Parents should model this behavior for children by praising them for specific things they have done well, even if they made a mistake or may not have played as well as hoped.

Respect the decisions of referees and other officials. These people are charged with making difficult decisions about plays in the game. Good sportsmanship requires that you accept a call, even if you disagree with it. Remember that it's only one call in a long game—get back into play and focus on the game.

End with a handshake. Good sportsmen enjoy sports and know how to end a game on a positive note, whether or not they won. Threats, anger, criticism, and other negative expressions are not acceptable.

Teaching Children Sportsmanship: Lessons in Respect, Responsibility, and Fair Play

Teaching Children Sportsmanship Lessons in Respect, Responsibility, and Fair Play at For The Love of Teachers

When children start playing sports at a young age, they are exposed to different scenarios – like emerging as victors for a tournament they’ve been training months for or even losing a game that they thought they had in the bag. In sports, anything can happen. But when losing can become too frequent or too painful, it’s easy for children to build unsportsmanlike behavior.

That’s where teachers come into the picture. Teaching sportsmanship doesn’t have to happen on the field, it can start in your very own classroom. In this article, we’ll get into the details of everything about sportsmanship – its definition, the how-tos, and the challenges.

What Is Sportsmanship?

Sportsmanship is all about playing the sport with fairness. Win or lose, sportsmanship is one value that all children must learn at a young age. It builds respect, fairness, self-control, and integrity. You see, this value goes beyond the “sports” in “sportsmanship” as it develops their character and allows them to build positive relationships with the people around them.

Signs of Poor Sportsmanship

Have you ever wondered if your students were in need of a short refresher on the meaning of sportsmanship? Here are some signs that a student has poor sportsmanship:

  • When playing games, it often turns out badly – verbal argument, physical harm, or bullying.
  • They have difficulty regulating their emotions in the classroom and in games.
  • The student sulks for the rest of the day when they lose a competition.

How to Teach Sportsmanship to Children

Fortunately, children can be easily taught the value of sportsmanship. As a teacher, you’ll have to put in some work to ensure that these kids instill this important value. Here’s how you can achieve that:

Show Them Videos About Sportsmanship

Some children retain information better when watching videos about sportsmanship, which is why showing them can help them learn more about it. Videos that display real-life situations of how people act in sports can give them an idea of what true sportsmanship is like. For instance, you can show a video of a heated tournament of volleyball, and later on, see the players exchange high-fives once the game is over. While this may seem like a simple gesture, it shows that all is well between the two teams – no feelings of disrespect or anger.

Incorporate It Into Your Classroom Activities

Another way to keep them involved while learning about sportsmanship is by incorporating sportsmanship into your classroom activities. A brilliant example to do this is through engaging them in a poster-making activity. For this activity, students can draw anything they want – as long as it displays sportsmanship. They can even write a quote and add their own designs. Once they’re done with their work, plaster them on the walls of your classroom. Not only does it improve your classroom decor, but also it serves as a daily reminder to them about the value of sportsmanship. Such activities in the classroom also promote the significance of maintaining a healthy balance between sports and school .

Be a Role Model

Children learn by imitating the behavior of others. And being a teacher, you’re placed in a position where you can greatly influence their character. That’s why it’s crucial that you be a role model to them by displaying values of sportsmanship in your daily life, like showing empathy .

For example, that means cheering on a student when they try something new even when failing. Show that they shouldn’t solely focus on the achievements, but also the effort. You must also exhibit sportsmanlike behavior, such as not using negative language. And in the event that they throw a tantrum and start kicking their sports bag, that’s the time to tell them to stop – you shouldn’t condone that behavior. Note that there are many ways you can model sportsmanlike behavior and that you have a huge role to play in building their character.

Challenges in Teaching Sportsmanship

Of course, teaching sportsmanship to children isn’t always sunshine and butterflies. Sometimes, the road to achieving that can get a little bumpy. But with awareness of these challenges, inculcating the value of sportsmanship can be a little easier.

The environment of a child plays a huge role in building their character – their family, their friends, their teammates, their classmates, and their teachers. Even the media they’re exposed to can affect their behaviors. While we cannot fully control their environment, teachers must foster a positive classroom environment to solidify their students’ sportsmanlike behavior.

Some students may take longer to teach than others – and that’s okay. All students are different – different backgrounds, different upbringings, and different environments. With all these factors coming into play, it’s easy to see why teaching sportsmanship can get difficult, although not impossible.

In Conclusion

Teachers play an influential role in the behavioral development of children. By instilling values of sportsmanship, children are more likely to build positive relationships with others. They will learn how to respect others, have empathy for them, and be models of fairness and integrity. And these values are what they will carry with them for the rest of their life.

Who needs sportsmanship? The answer is we all do

Christiano Ronaldo drapes injured Edison Cavani's arm over him to help Cavani off the field during World Cup soccer game

Sports deliver mixed messages: We play to win. No points for second place. It’s not whether you win or lose but how you play the game that counts. Cheaters never win, and winners never cheat.

The world of sports is replete with examples of good and bad sportsmanship. But what exactly is sportsmanship, and why does it matter? Definitions often involve fair play, respect for all parties involved and graciousness in winning and losing.

Tim Delaney, a sociology professor at the State University of New York at Oswego, defines it in “ The Sociology of Sports ” as “conduct and attitudes considered as benefiting participants, especially in regards to a sense of fair play, courtesy toward teammates and opponents, game officials and others involved in the sporting contest, as well as grace in losing.”

Sports are supposed to build confidence and instill important values, but they can do the opposite if sportsmanship falls by the wayside. And if bad sportsmanship sours the experience, participants can miss the benefits of sports.

Sportsmanship came to the forefront of the 2018 World Cup a few times. Delaney noted sportsmanship helped determine whether Senegal or Japan advanced. When the two teams finished tied in the standings and the first two tiebreakers did not give one of them the edge, FIFA’s new “fair play” tiebreaker allowed Japan to advance. The teams’ red and yellow cards were added, and Japan had a lower total. However, “referee calls are subjective,” Delaney added, so “fair play — which is a critical element of sportsmanship — is not necessarily fair.”

Also during the World Cup, when Uruguay’s Edinson Cavani started limping off the field, Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo helped him walk. Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku signaled to the referee not to penalize Tunisia after a player made contact with him.

In other sports, Desiree Linden won the 2018 Boston Marathon even after slowing to help Shalane Flanagan catch up to the pack after she was forced to stop for a bathroom break. Even high school students have made headlines recently for good sportsmanship: A high school golfer reported an error she had made on her scorecard, causing her and her team to lose state titles. A high school pitcher who had just won a baseball tournament game by striking out his childhood friend stopped to hug and console him before celebrating, and a video of it went viral.

At the time, no one talked much about what she did until the story gained traction with the media, Holtman-Fletcher recalled. But that’s not surprising, because athletes often don’t learn about sportsmanship in any systematic way, she said. “Growing up, there wasn’t a point that somebody sat me down to teach me about sportsmanship.”

Holtman-Fletcher went on to coach at CWU and then speak about sportsmanship as part of the Positive Coaching Alliance , which aims to develop “better athletes, better people” by providing resources to athletes, coaches, parents and administrators. Part of the problem is coaches lack resources for guidance — especially if they are volunteer coaches just stepping into the role, she said.

Another organization that offers parents and coaches resources is the Changing the Game Project , which works “to ensure that we return youth sports to our children, and put the ‘play’ back in ‘play ball.’”

“Youth sport is a wonderful place to teach values, like resilience, respect for rules and respect for opponents, and how to work hard and accomplish something,” said John O'Sullivan, founder of the project . “It’s not supposed to be a forum for adults to compete against other adults through their kids. That’s what it’s become in far too many instances.”

O’Sullivan promotes a player-centric approach that asks: “Does this decision serve the needs of the participants or my ego as a coach or as a parent?” The overzealous parents and coaches are in the minority, but the silent majority needs to start speaking up, he said.

“One of the biggest problems in youth sport is that we use professional sport as our model. Professional sport is sport for entertainment purposes. Youth sport is sport for development, both athletic and human development,” O’Sullivan said. The adult value of being willing to do anything to win trickles down to youth sport, which is supposed to be about teaching kids how to play properly and teaching them “respect and integrity through sport,” he said.

Kids differ from adults in another way, said Solomon Alexander, director of the National Sportsmanship Foundation . “Kids can work hard and have fun at same time. The adult mindset seems to be if you’re just doing something for fun, you don’t really care how it turns out. Kids care more about the outcome the more fun that they’re having,” he said. “So sports need to be fun for kids.”

This high school pitcher held off celebrating with his teammates so he could console his childhood friend instead. (?: @b757fo_jim ) pic.twitter.com/tjGqoz2EPU — Sporting News (@sportingnews) June 11, 2018

At a recent soccer tournament, O’Sullivan watched a 9-year-old boys’ game that a 15-year-old was refereeing. “Parents on both sides are screaming at this kid. There’s a foul and the coach charges off the field and is screaming at this 15-year-old referee — who’s all by himself, there’s no adult watching the game — he slams his hat down and is getting in this kid’s face,” he recalled.

Well-meaning parents, coaches and administrators can cause problems, Alexander said. “For example, you have parents who think the only way to get their kid to college is through sports, and so they put enormous pressure on the kid to excel in a sport, starting from very young age,” pushing him or her to get a scholarship.

So what’s at stake if good sportsmanship isn’t upheld? “We’re losing a whole section of children from sports because they’re having bad experiences,” Holtman-Fletcher said, noting that kids are demeaning other kids and those who are not athletically gifted start to feel bad. Holtman-Fletcher says she doesn’t think all kids need to have equal playing time, but a less gifted player needs to be reminded it’s OK if she’s not as good as the best player — and that the game is fun.

“Kids quit sports when adults make it no fun,” Alexander said. “And lack of respect, integrity, civility and fair play makes sports less fun for kids.” He added that “when kids are having trouble with their baseball coach, they don’t just quit that baseball team.” They often move away from sports entirely.

As kids become adults, sportsmanship-related issues can intensify. “By the time athletes get to high school and college, sportsmanship is given lip service, but something else becomes far more important: winning,” Delaney said. College students on scholarship may get pressured to play as hard as possible, and “sometimes that can take precedence over playing fairly,” he said.

The adult realm also includes coaches teaching their athletes how to get away with things, such as when to push someone, Delaney said. He published “ Sportsmanship: Multidisciplinary Perspectives , ” a book of essays geared toward adults, after finding that other sportsmanship books focus on kids. He also hosts a Sportsmanship Day Symposium every year.

The lack of sportsmanship is not unique to the U.S., Alexander said. In the U.S., “our issues are centered on the fact that we hold sports in such high esteem. We hold professional athletes in higher regard than we do doctors, and that’s an issue,” he said. But badly behaved parents and coaches can be found everywhere.

Delaney agreed these p roblems are universal, although they may take different shapes in different areas of the world. For example, some countries are known for so-called hooliganism — fans picking fights with other fans and acting out violently or destructively — he said, and parents and fans harassing referees are more common in some places more than others.

Being kind and being competitive are not incompatible, Holtman-Fletcher said. “I’m competitively compassionate — you can’t lose all your morals just to be competitive.” If you lose, it’s not the end of the world, and “failure is a good way to succeed,” she said.

People have strong opinions on whether participation trophies are helpful or harmful. Alexander supports giving them to youth. “There is no harm in giving everybody a trophy when they’re 8 years old, because what you want to do is spend as much time as you can filling up your kid’s cup,” he explained. “Because the rest of the world for the rest of their lives will try to tear them down. If a cheap trophy makes them feel good that day” and makes them want to come back the next day, it’s worth giving.

The National Sportsmanship Foundation recognizes extraordinary sportsmanship through its annual Musial Awards . Alexander cited the example of one winner, Josh Zuchowski . When he was 10, his main swimming rival was Reese Branzell — the two would often trade first and second place. When Reese was hospitalized and couldn’t compete at a meet, Josh dedicated his race to Reese and won. Then he gave Reese his trophy, along with a note that said: “I would rather get second with you at the meet than win with you absent. I won this trophy for you today. I hope to see you back in the pool.” It shows that even a 10-year-old “can make difference in somebody’s life,” Alexander said.

Sportsmanship…and why it matters

Education is incomplete without sports, and sports are incomplete without a true education of sportsmanship.

As millions head back for another year of school, I wanted to use this post to share an insight for all students athletes, parents, coaches and fans.

The choice made by athletes to engage in sportsmanlike behavior depends in large part, on how the sport is structured by coaches, parents, and fans.

Good sportsmanship begins with an understanding that the principle nature of athletics, sports, and physical education are an integral part of the educational process, presenting innumerable opportunities to learn skills that last a lifetime.

The teaching of good sportsmanship offers an ideal opportunity for any athlete to develop life skills such as character, teamwork, honor and fair play, excellence and hard work, discipline, overcoming adversity and failure, resiliency and perseverance, joy and humility, respect, maturity, unselfishness, responsibility, goal setting, planning, citizenship and the importance of developing a competitive spirit.

These are all success and survival skills, and they are all the direct benefits of teaching good sportsmanship.

Sports are an extension of our societal mores. If and athlete chooses to engage in unsportsmanlike behavior, we must pause and consider exactly where do athletes learn unsportsmanlike behaviors.

Poor sportsmanship is a learned behavior as is good sportsmanship. We all learn moral behavior from engaging with others, watching the behaviors of others, or by being taught ethical behavior. Therefore, teaching and modeling appropriate behaviors can enhance sportsmanlike behaviors.

Being involved in sport alone is not sufficient to ensure that athletes will learn sportsmanlike attitudes and behaviors. Rather it is the social interactions that are fostered by the sport experience that will determine the benefit of sport to athletes.

Achieving that benefit requires that the designated leaders within the sport take action to teach ethical and moral behavior in that respective sport.

Restoring sportsmanship and civility to athletics must become a shared concern. Good sportsmanship dictates:

Respect – Athletes should display proper respect and courtesy, and maintain civility toward opposing coaches and athletes, game officials and spectators at all contests. Most importantly, athletes must respect the game and uphold its virtues.

Listening – A player with good sportsmanship listens to and follows the directions of the coach, realizing that each player’s decisions affect the rest of the team.

Communication – If a player has disagreements with the coach, the player discusses the disagreements privately in a civil manner, away from the public eye.

Responsibility – Designated leaders bear the responsibility of teaching the value of sporting conduct in both word and deed to their athletes. The use of foul or vulgar language is inconsistent with this responsibility.

Discipline – There is no place in athletics for taunting, embarrassing or humiliating an opponent or game official. Everyone must be made aware of the consequences when failing to abide by the acceptable code of conduct.

Humility – Sportsmanship understands that failure is part of the game. The player with good sportsmanship does not use the occasion to make excuses or blame. They maintain composure, learn from their mistakes and prepare for the next competition.

Self-Control – Sportsmanship exercises self-control with game officials during competition and refrains from approaching officials to address them in a disrespectful manner. Part of the human condition is making mistakes.

Joy – Maintaining a “Fun is Number 1” attitude. If everyone is having fun, it’ll make learning all aspects of the game more enjoyable and rewarding. A good sport has fun because they enjoy playing the game more than the final outcome.

Rules – Part of good sportsmanship is knowing the rules of the game and playing by them. It is the athlete’s responsibility to learn not only how to play but how to play according to the rules to allow competitive games to be played in an orderly fashion.

Accountability – Coaches and athletes must live up to their own highest personal standard of sportsmanship, even when their opponents may not. Personal accountability and respect for one’s own standards must be your first priority.

Honor – The responsibility to demonstrate and develop character and sportsmanship should never be subordinated to the desire to win. The vital lessons and intrinsic value of sports are acquired through the competition and honorable pursuit of victory, rather than the outcome itself.

Excellence – Personal mastery, increased skill development, as well as performing to the best of your abilities are the hallmarks of good sportsmanship. Everyone can be a success because success relates to the effort put into realizing one’s personal potential.

Teamwork – Good sportsmanship implies that the player on a team is a team player. In other words, the player understands that his or her behavior reflects on the team in general. Moreover, a team player does not condone unsportsmanlike conduct from teammates.

Encouragement – Sportsmanship praises teammates when they do well and comforts and encourages them when they make mistakes. Criticizing teammates in the heat of battle simply distracts from the focus of working together and gives the advantage to the opponent who develops a sense of confidence when seeing signs of weakness or a lack of unity in the midst of the competition.

Gratitude – Coaches and athletes must understand that competing in athletics is a privilege, not a right. Be grateful for the opportunity to compete, be grateful for challenging opposition, be grateful for your skills and talents and never take any part of the game for granted.

Role Modeling – Modeling sportsmanlike behaviors within the sporting environment increases an athlete’s demonstration of sportsmanlike behaviors. Thus, what coaches do on the playing field or in the gym sends a message about appropriate behaviors to their athletes.

Rewards – Any behavior (good or bad) that gets rewarded gets repeated. It crucial that we recommit ourselves to guiding our athletes, reminding them what sportsmanship is all about, rewarding them for showing good sportsmanship and showing, by our example, that sportsmanship is still alive and valued in sports today.

Sportsmanship is everybody’s business. Everybody from the coaches and players to the parents and fans – we can all learn or relearn the principles of sportsmanship.

If young athletes are not exposed to the essentials of sportsmanship, and if we don’t guide them in developing a sense of good sportsmanship, we can all but guarantee that they will fall prey to the uncivilized conduct, which they see, modeled and reinforced by so many poor examples.

Sportsmanship is an action verb – it is something we must actively seek to teach and reinforce through our words and our actions at every opportunity because sportsmanship counts.

English Summary

Sportsman Spirit Essay in English

Sportsmanship or sporting spirit means the right spirit in which a game is played. An ideal sportsman plays a game for the sake of the game. He is neither puffed by a victory nor depressed by a defeat. He remains ever the same both in adversity and prosperity.

He does not take undue advantage of the weakness of his opponents Just as on the playground so in the broad field of life, he shows his true sportsman spirit. In all walks of life, his motto is:

“Play up! play up! play up the game!”

A marked quality of an ideal sportsman is that he believes in fair play and no favour. He does not want any favour to be shown to his team. He believes in equal opportunities for all, he never hits below the belt or plays an underhand game to win a victory. He observes the rules very honestly mis motto is summed up by the following beautiful lines.

To set the cause above renown, To love the game beyond the prize.

Again an ideal sportsman displays the same enthusiasm in the end as in the meaning of the game. He takes the same keen interest in the game whether the opponent is strong or weak.

He will neither challenge nor defy the decision of the umpire even if it goes against the interest of his team. The greatest test of a true sportsman comes when he is playing a losing game. He gives a good account of himself even in the hour of his defeat.

Team-spirit is also an important element of sportsmanship. In games, the various players must co-operate with one another if they wish to win a match. Sportsmanship means one for all and all for one. In co-operation indeed lies strength. For an ideal sportsman, failures are not a source of discouragement but a stepping stone to success.

Human life is a vast playground where the game of life is played on a bigger scale. The qualities of an ideal sportsman are co-operation, team spirit, discipline, obedience, Fairfield and no favour. These qualities are also required for playing the game of life.

“A true sportsman is he who harmonises strength and weakness in the interest of peace and order,” says Plato.

In all walks of life, an ideal sportsman shows due regard for the feelings and thoughts of others. His dealings with others are always fair and square.

“The Battle of Waterloo was won on the playground of Eton (a public school in England),” said Wellington.

What he meant was that the qualities of sportsmanship learnt by the English soldiers in their schools, stood them in good stead when they came to face such a terrible enemy as Napoleon on the battle-field of Waterloo. The fact is that a true sportsman observes all those rules in life which he has been taught to observe in games.

In short, an ideal sportsman is noted for his high sense of discipline impartiality, honesty, far-play, broad mindedness, frankness and fellow feeling. He does not regard games and sports as merely a means of advertisement or publicity, prizes or medals. He plays them for pleasure and amusement. He looks upon games and sports as a means of moulding character.

Sportsmanship

Sportsmanship means not only taking part in sports and playing games with the set rules, but also leading a life with the same sportsman spirit displayed on the playing fields. Sportsman spirit is the behavior and attitude considered appropriate in sports.

A true sportsman follows all the rules in life, which he has been following in the game. A person who has achieved skills and abilities in a game but has not learned to apply the values of the sport in his life cannot be called a true sportsman. On the other hand, a person who shows a strong sporting spirit in his life, but has not achieved much in-game is still a sportsman. Usually, those who play games develop into true sportsmen because of their nature formed by the training they receive in initial years.

Some of the important qualities that a true sportsman displays after defeats are discipline, joyfulness, and admiration for the opponent. Respect, hustle, and loyalty are very important principles for a real sportsman. Sportsmanship is always appreciated by others. Honest and fair-minded play is important in sportsmanship. A side or a team is penalized if its player is found at fault. Similarly, in life, one should always be fair in dealing with other people and different situations.

Some of the other important qualities that true sportsman displays in life include passion, sincerity, morality, fairness, and honesty. A true sportsman never practices unfair tricks, falsehoods, and cheating. He never takes advantage of the weakness of his opponent. He always shows respect and obedience to his team captain. He works hard to win the faith of his team members. In life too, a sportsman obeys his seniors and elders even if he disagrees in certain matters. Thus, respect for discipline is a necessary part of sportsmanship. However, a competitor who shows poor sportsmanship after losing a game or contest is often called a ‘sore loser’.

In various games, players have to work in cooperation with their team. Only then, they may succeed in winning. A sportsman is aware of the fact that without mutual understanding, success is not possible. In the same way, in life, we must always be by the side of our relatives and friends when they need us the most.

For the spirit of sportsmanship, cheerfulness is required even in times of defeats and failures. A person can develop the quality of sportsmanship only when he works with others without jealousy and fights. Working in a state of Peaceful existence with others is the main demand for sportsmanship.

The word sportsmanship implies working with co-operation, sincerity, discipline, punctuality, and obedience. In other words, the virtue of team-spirit can be called sportsmanship.

The word sportsmanship does not mean goals and records pertaining to the sports field. It is also applicable in daily life like the way in which we conduct ourselves socially, in business, in-class rooms, and as a citizen.

Co-operation is an important aspect of sportsmanship. No goal in life or in the field can be achieved without the co-operation of our peers and compatriots. A person can be self-reliant only to an extent. There comes a stage when without the co-operation of our fellow beings a person cannot hope to achieve a larger goal. Mahatama Gandhi was a self-reliant person; however, he also needed the co-operation of the Indian masses in order to make his non-co-operation movement and Satyagraha successful.

Sincerity is the most essential part of sportsmanship. In the absence of it, the truth and the commitment of the person towards the task at hand is lost. The attempts become half-hearted. The willingness to go to all the extents to complete the job perfectly is lost. The end result is an incomplete or unsatisfactory work

Discipline is required in great quantities if one wishes to complete the job in the easiest way. Discipline makes a person more systematic. He does the job in a regular and proper manner. No loophole or snag in the job is left unattended. In the end, the finished work is a joy to behold.

Punctuality is the essence of sportsmanship. In the absence of it, the schedule and the time-table for the job go hay-wire. The worker and the team who do not value time are the most careless workers. They because of their attitude towards time often endanger the whole project or the work at hand. Every work in this world has to be completed within a certain time-frame. If this is not followed chaos will reign. It is therefore not without a reason that nature follows its time-table with a great deal of punctuality.

Obedience is the last dimension of sportsmanship. This could be towards rules, towards team leader, or towards the principles of the job at hand. Disobedience to any aspect of the work may result in damages, loss of life, or abortion of the work at hand. It also means trusting the judgments of the leader and the captain for the final achievement of the goal

All the above-mentioned factors when well-knit make a team and an individual a dependable entity. It also makes a process smooth, the realization of the goals easier, and saves time in the bargain.

Set 1: Essay On Sportsmanship

Sportsmanship means not only taking part in sports and playing game with the set rules, but also leading a life with the same sportsman spirit displayed on the playing fields. Sportsman spirit is the behaviour and attitude considered as appropriate in sports.

A true sportsman follows all that rules in life, which he has been following in the game. A person who has achieved skills and abilities in a game but has not learned to apply the values of the sport in his life cannot be called as a true sportsman. On the other hand, a person who shows a strong sporting pirit in his life, but has not achieved much in game is still a sportsman. Usually, those who play games develop into true sportsman because of their nature formed by the training they receive in initial years.

Some of the important qualities that a true sportsman displays after defeats are discipline, joyfulness and admiration for the opponent. Respect, hustle and loyalty are very important principles for a real sportsman. Sportsmanship is always appreciated by others. Honest and fairminded play is important in sportsmanship. A side or a team is penalized if its player is found at fault. Similarly, in life one should always be fair in dealing with other people and different situations. A true sportsman never practices unfair tricks, falsehoods and cheating. He never takes advantage of the weakness of his opponent.

Essay On Sportsmanship

Set 2: Essay On Sportsmanship

Sportsmanship means team spirit. Team spirit means working in co-operation for the achievement of a common goal. Team spirit teaches the qualities of co-operation, discipline, punctuality, obedience and so on.

Achieving the goal through co-operation and disciplined efforts means sportsmanship. Achieving the goal is not the responsibility of a particular sportsman. One is to see how the goal can be achieved and not who achieves it. One must act in the right way to win a victory for the team.

Game should be played not for victory or defeat. It should be played for the sake of game. A sportsman should not lose his head in victory, nor should he feel depressed in case of defeat. He should not feel jealous of the victory of his opponent. He should rather appreciate his superior game.

A sportsman is always disciplined. Obedience to the rules of the game should be his watch-word. He should not hit his opponent below the belt. He should never use unfair means to win a victory.

Like a disciplined soldier, he should not question the decision of his captain or the umpire. Even if they be wrong, he must submit. He must maintain a balance of mind.

Sportsmanship is the greatest quality of life. It is needed in every walk of life. This world is a big playground. Life is a game and we are the players. It is with a sportsman spirit that we can face the problems of life. Otherwise, our life will be a big burden upon us. Unless we learn the art of ‘give and take’ and ‘live and let live’, we are just like beasts.

The persons who lack the sportsman spirit become intolerant, narrow minded and self-centred. They cannot work for the mankind. What is required is co-operation and respect for the views of others.
