The easiest way to write about a garden is to break it down into small segments as one-liners. An essay for class 1 on gardens can include simple points about gardening. A class 2 essay can consist of more facts.

  • My garden is one of the most beautiful parts of my house. The different types of plants and flowers make it very decorative and attractive.

Children used to gardening work will have no problem writing about it. For those who have little experience in it, this short essay will give them some ideas:

Gardening is my favourite hobby, and I think my garden is the best place in my house. I can spend many hours every day working in my garden, and being there makes me feel fresh and happy. I got interested in gardening because of my mother and grandmother. They grow many different types of herbs, fruits and vegetables, which we eat and enjoy. My interest in gardening grew after my mother encouraged me to plant carrot seeds in a small pot. After a few weeks of taking care of them by watering and adding manure, I could harvest some baby carrots. Ever since then, I have been totally hooked on gardening.

My garden is in a small plot of land in my backyard. We grow flowering plants closer to the building, where there is some shade and some sunlight. For the vegetables, we choose a spot with plenty of sunlight, which they require to grow big. I have to maintain the garden by watering it every day or else the leaves will fade. I like sitting in the garden and relaxing in the fresh scenery. When my friends come home, I show them all the new flowers and plants I have added.

Class 3 students are expected to write a long essay on gardening. Your child can start by arranging all the ideas appropriately and weaving them into an engaging narrative. Here is an example for a descriptive essay on ‘My Garden’ for children of class 3:

I have always loved nature and greenery in every place I visit. My parents often take me out of the city to experience the countryside and beautiful nature that makes me feel alive. My city life is busy, and my garden is the only escape to nature in the middle of all the concrete buildings. I feel lucky to have enough space in my house to grow a beautiful garden. My garden is in the patch of land right next to my window. Not just that, I have plants in pots all around our house, including the terrace!

There is a small patch of lawn in my garden for my family and friends to sit and enjoy a leisurely time. We have planted hedges on the sides of the walls that give the garden a beautiful look and feel. The hedges grow fast, so they need to be trimmed often. Over a dozen different types of flowering plants decorate the house all around. I have planted flowering varieties both in the ground and in the pots. The flowers attract birds and butterflies, and it is the best sight in the world.

My mother has planted various vegetables in the section of the garden that faces our kitchen. We love eating the fresh vegetables we harvest from the garden. Different seasons are suited for growing different vegetables, but we have cherry tomatoes all year round.

Since my window faces the garden, the plants and flowers are the first things I see every morning after I wake up. Whether I am studying or just relaxing, my garden is my place of peace and zen. All my friends like to come and sit in my garden because of how fresh it feels. Gardening is an activity I believe everyone should take up even if they don’t have much space in the house. They will be surprised at how well some plants can do in a simple pot!

Writing about gardening will teach your children how to write about a hobby they enjoy. Gardening is an activity that most children would be familiar with. However, some living in dense cities might not have been exposed to it. They might learn some new facts while thinking about gardening and get interested in trying their hand at it. The topic helps them ponder over the responsibility of tending a garden. It will also encourage them to observe the benefits of a garden and appreciate nature.

Essay on My Garden

According to me, the garden is the best place in a house. It is the place where someone can sit for a while and unwind amidst nature and feel refreshed. The oxygen in the air, sunlight flooding the entire stretch of the open space, the sweet fragrance from the flowers, and the chirping of birds- everything seems to come together to create a cacophony that is magical and therapeutic on the human mind. Nowadays, not too many houses are blessed with a garden. But if one wants to live a peaceful life, he must consider getting a garden for his own abode.

The Plants In My Garden

In my garden, there are various types of plants. Some are flowering plants, some bear fruits and vegetables, while there are some other plants which look simply adorable because of the sheer beauty of their leaves. The flowers that adorn my garden are rose, sunflower, lily, and chrysanthemum. The garden looks stunning when the flowers are in full bloom.

I have cultivated many vegetables in my garden with the help of my grandfather. Tomato, brinjal, ladies finger, and green chilly are among them. I am trying to make my garden an organic garden so that we don’t have to depend upon vegetables bought from the markets. These vegetables that I grow have several health benefits besides being fresh and chemical-free.

There is soft grass all over my garden. The grass is maintained properly and trimmed on a regular basis. This makes the garden an ideal place for different exercises. I like to walk in bare feet in my garden only because of the soft grass cover. Moreover, there is a swing in my garden where I can spend hours swinging on it. I don’t get bored doing any activities in my garden. When it is a holiday, I spend my entire day in my garden doing various activities.

The Gardener

My grandfather is the gardener of my garden. His most favourite place in the house is the garden. He spends his entire day there. He is a perfect example of a true nature lover. He not only experiments with the plants of the garden but also takes care of them like his own children. He brought some unique varieties of flowers last week like climbers, bulbs and perennials. My garden turns out to be the brightest of all because of the flowers. The trimming of the grasses is done by me and I am the only person on whom my grandfather depends a lot.

Every day I wake up with the chirping of the birds. My garden is the safe shelter of various birds. I don’t even know the name of all the birds. Various birds such as the sparrow, pigeon, Indian myna, cuckoo etc come to my garden in the morning. On a rare occasion, one or two migratory birds also pay a visit to my garden. At that time, all the members of my family assemble to observe the beauty of those birds. We treat them like our special guests and offer seeds and water to eat/drink.

My favourite place in my house is the garden. I have developed an emotional attachment with this small stretch of greenery. Last year my garden was totally destroyed by the super cyclone. That incident made me very sad. But I, along with my grandfather, created the garden more beautifully by working day and night diligently. Gardening and seeing the plants bloom gives me the amazing feeling of creating something new.

Long and Short Essay on My Garden in English

My garden essay 1 (200 words).

My Garden is my favourite part of my house. I can spend hours in my garden without getting bored. It makes me come alive and I just love that feeling.

It is my mother who maintains the garden at our place just as she takes care of various other household chores. She is a huge nature lover and it was her idea to build a beautiful garden at home even though there isn’t a lot of space here. Most of the people in our neighbourhood have converted this place in their house into car parking area or have covered the place to build a small room. But my mother chose to convert this small piece of land into a lovely garden.

Our garden is full of colourful flowers. We have a row of roses on one side and a row of seasonal flowers on the other side. These flowers include marigold, petunia, pansy, hollyhock, aster, alyssum, hibiscus, sunflowers and lilies. It is extremely delightful to see these flowers blooming. My mother ensures that the plants get water and manure regularly so that they grow and bloom the way they should. I also help my mother with these activities.

I am thankful to my mother for giving me such a beautiful place to sit and rejoice nature.

My Garden Essay 2 (300 words)

Introduction

My garden is full of aromatic herbs. My grandfather loves gardening and I love helping him with this activity. We have grown numerous types of plants in our garden. Most of these are herbs such as aloe vera, basil, mint, coriander, curry plant and lemon grass. This helps in two ways. It adds to the beauty of the house and also provides natural herbs that offer so many health benefits.

My Morning Begins Here

My morning begins in my garden. As I wake up, the first thing I do is to head straight to my garden. It is the best way to begin my day. I just love the essence of this place. My grandfather is already seated on the small bench we have placed there. I go and sit right next to him. I practice deep breathing for around 15 minutes and then have a look at the various plants around the garden. The sight is extremely refreshing. I begin with my daily tasks only after spending around half an hour in my garden.

The Best Way to Spend My Evening

I often go out with my friends in the evening after my tuition classes. It gives me respite after a long day at school and coaching institute. We go to the nearby market to have some evening snacks and chit chat for a while before heading home. While I do look forward to this time every day, I love spending the evening hours in my garden all the more. Many a times, I call my friends to my place. We sit in the garden while my mother serves hot soup and snacks. For me, it is simply the best way to spend the evening hours.

My garden is an integral part of my life. This place can uplift my mood in fraction of seconds. I help my grandfather take care of my garden.

My Garden Essay 3 (400 words)

I just love nature. Hills, valleys, sunsets, sea, plants, trees and flowers – I love everything that is natural and organic. Every time we visit a hill station, I feel like staying there forever. It gets difficult for me to return as I feel so attached to the very essence of the places where nature can be seen in its pure, unadulterated form.

My Garden – My Idea

While I cannot bring along hills and valleys back home, I can certainly feel the enchanting smell of the flowers and plants by growing some at my place. As we were coming back from our trip to Assam, I was missing the lush green tea gardens and the beautiful flowers in the botanical garden there. It was like I had left my heart there. It was then that the idea of growing my own garden sprang in my mind. I spoke about it to my sister and she was equally thrilled.

Since we live in a flat, we did not have a proper area that could be turned into a garden. However, we could certainly fill one of our balconies with different types of flowers and feel their aroma fill in our house.

We spoke about the idea with our parents and they agreed to it on the condition that we will have to take care of the entire thing on our own.

Our Visit to the Nursery

On the weekend that followed, I and my sister visited the nearby nursery. There were numerous flowers out there and it was difficult to choose a few among them. It took almost 2 hours to choose the plants we wanted to get home. Among the flowering plants we choose rose, marigold, pansy and aster. Besides, we also brought home areca palm, spider plant, aloe vera, basil and asparagus. The nursery in-charge told us ways to take care of different plants so that they remain green for long.

We handpicked the plant pots. Most of them were white coloured plastic pots of the same size. We called home a gardener to place all the plants in the pots. Once this was done, we arranged the pots strategically so that the entire balcony was evenly covered with them. It looked beautiful.

We visit the nursery quite often to pick more plants to add to our collection. Seasonal flowers do not last long and we love picking different plants to fill their place.

I personally take care of each and every plant grown in my garden. Our balcony turned garden is extremely beautiful and we often receive compliments for the same from our neighbours and friends.

My Garden Essay 4 (500 words)

I always wanted to grow a garden at my place but it did not seem possible as we lived in a small flat in Delhi. There was a beautiful garden at my friend, Riya’s place and I wished we had one too every time I saw it. My prayers were soon heard and we shifted to my father’s home town, Chandigarh. The house here was big and there was enough space that could be turned into a garden.

Hiring a Professional Gardener

Luckily for me, my mother is as fond of plants and flowers as me. Thus, I did not have to convince her to grow a garden she too wanted to do it. After we got settled in the new place, we decided to shape the barren piece of land at our place into a garden. Since, the house had been vacant since years the soil in the garden was not good enough to grow grass and plants immediately.

So, my mother decided to hire a professional gardener. He worked on the soil for about a week during which he watered it regularly, used different tools to dig it and poured manure. Soon after, he planted grass and a few plants. We were delighted to see our little garden blooming.

Growing the Garden

I and my mother decided to visit the nursery to buy different plants for our garden. It was summer season and the nursery was blooming with pink and white lilies, colourful hibiscus, roses, pansies, sunflowers and bougainvillea. We loved them all and it was extremely difficult to choose among them. After mulling for over an hour, we finally choose a few saplings of hibiscus, bougainvillea, lilies and roses.

The saplings we brought were planted strategically in different parts of the garden. The bougainvillea being a climber was planted near the fence. Within a month it climbed the fence and spread over it. The beautiful bunches of pink flowers that grew on it were a visual treat. We decided to plant similar flowers together. So the roses were planted in one corner. A row of lilies was set close by and hibiscus plants were planted at the other corner of the garden. It all looked extremely beautiful. The plants soon found their roots in the garden and small buds began to spout. Each time I saw a bud, I got extremely thrilled. Our garden was soon blossoming with flowers. The sweet fragrance of the flowers filled our house.

It has been 3 years now and my garden is filled with a variety of flowers and leafy plants. We keep bringing different types of flowers from time to time. However, roses, lilies and bougainvillea can always be found in my garden. We have also added a row of basil. The aroma of basil is quite soothing. We also use it in our kitchen quite frequently.

We still have the same professional gardener who works with dedication and takes care of my garden very well.

It is quite amazing to have a garden at home. I am thankful that we shifted to a city like Chandigarh where I could have the luxury of growing a garden.

My Garden Essay 5 (600 words)

For me, a garden is an integral part of the house. This is because I have seen one at my place ever since I my childhood. I have learned to crawl, walk and eat in my garden. I have numerous fond memories attached to it and it forms an important part of my life. It is my grandmother who beautified this place. She has put immense efforts in growing the garden and maintaining it.

Benefits of Gardening:

  • The Gazebo in My Garden

Since we live on the outskirts of the city, we have the luxury of having a big house and quite a big garden. Besides the beautiful trees and flowers that form a part of my garden, there is a beautiful gazebo set up here that adds to its beauty. The gazebo is set in one corner of the garden and it is my favourite spot. My father chose its design and it is appreciated by all.

We host a lot of parties at home and the gazebo is a hot favourite spot of the guests. During the times, when the weather is pleasant, my parents usually plan barbeque in the garden and everyone just loves sitting in the Gazebo with their plate of snacks.

I also love spending some time during the evening hours at this quite place in my garden. Many a times, I also study here. I find it easier to concentrate here compared to other parts of my house.

  • Organic Vegetables and Fruits in My Garden

Besides beautiful rows of leafy plants and multi-hued flowers, my grandmother has also planted many vegetables in our garden. Spinach, tomatoes, potatoes, green chillies, carrots and eggplants are among some of the vegetables that grow in my garden. Herbs such as coriander, mint and curry plant have also been planted. All these vegetables grow in abundance in my garden and we often cut and cook them for our meals.

Apart from these, my garden also has quite a few fruit trees. Lemon tree, mango tree, banana tree and papaya tree have always been a part of it. They bear fruits and fill the air with their refreshing smell. Many a times, I have been made to climb the mango tree to pluck the mangoes. It is super fun and I always look forward to it.

Maintaining Garden is not Easy – a tough task

Though having a garden adds to the beauty of the house, it is quite a task to maintain it. Many people love the idea of growing plants and try their hands at it but give up in some time. This is because plants require utmost care. It is essential for you to take care of them on a daily basis in order to keep them fresh and green and help them grow.

Plants do not only require water but also need different types of manures to grow. Hats off to my grandmother who is so dedicated towards taking care of our garden even at this age. She makes sure the plants are watered twice a day and all the required manures are added from time to time. She also ensures that weeds and unwanted plants that hamper the growth of the other plants are removed timely.

We have hired a professional gardener who comes to our place thrice a week and takes care of our garden. My grandmother supervises him and gets the tasks done properly.

Some of the best memories of my childhood are attached to my garden. I love it when my entire family sits together in the garden to have their evening tea. I also love the winter afternoons when we have our lunch in the garden. It is simply amazing. Having a garden at home is blissful.

The garden that surrounds my house is my favourite place to be. It is peaceful and helps me calm down when life becomes too much to handle. Having a garden, spending time in it and taking care of it have many benefits for everyone regardless of age or experience. It makes you feel proud of yourself for taking care of something so well; it reduces stress and gives you the chance to grow your fruits and vegetables.

My garden doesn’t look large from the outside, but you realize that there are much more plants than you thought when you’re inside. My garden has large trees, shrubs, herbs and gorgeous flowers . My favourite tree is the sapota tree, otherwise known as the chikoo tree. This is because when the sun sets in the evening, its rays filter through the leaves of the sapota tree, and the view is absolutely beautiful.

There is a path that runs throughout the garden and around the house. It is made of different materials at different points. I find this unique, and I think it adds character and makes the garden more special. The most important aspect of the garden is that it is entirely designed by my grandparents . They wanted to make the house feel more cosy and homely and decided that the best way to do that would be to have a garden all around where people could go if they felt sad.

We don’t have a professional gardener to help take care of it. The family does all the work such as watering the plants, weeding the garden and keeping away pesky insects and animals. We pluck the sapota fruit very regularly. We also make sure that the part of the tree that leans over the fence isn’t chewed off my cows or subject to stealing by other naughty children.

Everyone should own a garden. It is the best part of the house. Gardens filled with bright colourful flowers are a treat for the eyes. Here are essays on My Garden of varying lengths to help you with the same in your exam. You can choose any My Garden essay as per your need:

Having a garden at home is blissful.

essay my garden

My garden, like any other garden, is a place of beauty and tranquility. It’s also the perfect place to learn about nature and how it works.

Every Indian person should cultivate the habit of gardening. We should always plant a tree for the sake of our future simply because there is a saying that says “Go green, Go clean,” which implies that if there is more greenery, pollution will spread less.

Plants are the greatest friends of people who never expect anything in return, as I also like gardening. We have a balcony at my house, which is connected to my room. It has enough space for our balcony.

My father urged me to make that space suitable for flower growing and containers. He also assisted me much in this job by teaching me how to grow trees or plants.

For the Garden, You Need Hire an Expert.

essay my garden

It gave me great joy to discover that my mum shares my love of plants and flowers. She also enjoys growing plants and flowers, and she was the one who planted the flower in the garden after I told her that.

We planned to turn the barren plot of land at our new home into a garden after we had moved there. The soil in the garden was not excellent enough to grow grass and plants immediately since the home had been empty for years.

Only my mother had hired a professional gardener before me. He worked on the soil for almost a week, watering it frequently, digging it with various instruments, and pouring manure. He planted grass and a few plants shortly after that. We were overjoyed to see our small garden in full bloom.

When is The Best Time to Visit?

After my tuition courses, I often go out with my friends in the evenings before I intend to plant a garden. It provides me with a welcome break after a hard day at school and after my tuition. We head to a local church for some evening prayer before going for a lengthy stroll to catch up with a buddy.

But, although I still look forward to this time every day, I now spend most of my evenings in my garden. I often invite my friends to my home. My mother offers hot tea or coffee, as well as snacks, to us in the garden. It is, without a doubt, the greatest method for me to spend my evening hours.

Planting a Garden

1625966014_492_Essay-On-My-Garden-For-Students-038-Children

My mother and I decided to go to the plant nursery and purchase some plants for our yard. White lilies, vibrant hibiscus, roses, pansies, sunflowers, bougainvillea, and a variety of other flowers were among the blooms.

The trees we supplied were carefully planted in various areas of the garden. The bougainvillea is a climber that was supported by the sticks when it was planted. It climbed the stick and spread over it within a month. The lovely pink flower bouquets that bloomed on it were a delight.

We chose to grow flowers that looked similar in the same spot. As a result, the roses were planted in one of the corners. A row of lilies was planted nearby, and hibiscus plants were put in the garden’s opposite corner. Everything seemed to be really stunning. The plants quickly established themselves in the garden, and tiny buds sprouted.

Every time I saw a bud, I was overjoyed. Flowers quickly began to bloom in our garden. Our home was filled with the pleasant scent of flowers. Because the garden is such an essential part of my life, I like blooming many of the flowering plants in it.

Gardens of Good and Evil

A photo illustration of a row of carrots standing on end surrounding a few artificial flowers.

By Olivia Laing

Ms. Laing is the author of the forthcoming book “The Garden Against Time.”

I’ve always thought of gardens as benign, even virtuous places. It wasn’t until the lockdowns of 2020 that gardens began to take on a more sinister aspect in my mind, as havens of sunny privilege to which the fortunate could retreat while the less fortunate were trapped indoors.

That unsettling feeling was powerfully reinforced in Jonathan Glazer’s Oscar-winning British film “The Zone of Interest,” set in a lovely walled garden belonging to the commander of Auschwitz and his family. On the far side of the wall, audible but unseen, are all the horrors of the concentration camp. Inside, life is pleasant and calm. “It’s a paradise garden,” a visitor exclaims.

The film is a painful exposure of how easy it is to turn a blind eye to cruelty and injustice. So much for that most famous of moral injunctions: Voltaire’s “We must cultivate our own garden.”

The Auschwitz garden is an extreme example, but a startling number of great gardens were founded on regimes of brutality and cruelty that remain concealed from view. While researching their complicated history, I investigated the Anglo-American Middleton family, who used the grotesque profits from their slave plantations in South Carolina in the 18th century to fund exceptionally grand gardens, including Middleton Place, believed to be the oldest surviving landscape garden in America, and Shrubland Hall in England, visited by Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, in 1851. The Middletons’ obsessive garden-making was apparently a way to cleanse their money and climb the class ladder, similar to how the Sackler family used art to launder their reputations.

The idea of the garden as a place of sinister seclusion has found its way to the world of high fashion. The theme of the 2024 Met Gala on Monday will be “The Garden of Time,” a reference to a short story by J.G. Ballard. In Mr. Ballard’s characteristically bleak tale, a desperate mob advances on an elegant garden, where Count Axel and his wife are living out a civilized, secluded existence. The count plucks mysterious “time flowers” to stave off the inevitable incursion, knowing the horde spells ruin to their cultivated life. Perhaps Anna Wintour, the editor in chief of Vogue and long-term co-chair of the Gala, was thinking about time and loss, but for me the story articulated the most dangerous aspect of the garden, as a place to hide from reality in a private paradise.

For a gardener like myself, these stories are hard to confront. While very few of us create gardens on a robber-baron scale, the experience of the pandemic made it clear that they can still be a privileged and exclusionary zone. According to a 2021 study , white Americans are nearly twice as likely to live in a home with access to a garden as Black or Asian Americans. The selfish gardener of the 21st century creates idyllic vistas that rely on fertilizers and pesticides that poison the wider ecosystem or demand water in a time of drought.

Gardens don’t have to be like this: sealed, exclusive and defended. Mr. Ballard’s story reminded me of Iris Origo, an Anglo-American aristocrat who made the exquisite gardens of La Foce in Tuscany in the 1920s and ’30s. In her gripping memoir of World War II, “War in Val d’Orcia,” she describes a similar tide of desperate humanity approaching her garden gate. Unlike Mr. Ballard’s Count Axel, she didn’t seek to repel them, retiring to the library to dust her statues. Instead, she converted her grand house and garden into a haven for refugees, partisans and escaping soldiers, despite the risk of imprisonment or death.

One of the most exciting things I discovered in my research was a study carried out at Great Dixter, a well-known garden in the south of England, established by the horticulturist and writer Christopher Lloyd and cultivated after his death by Fergus Garrett. In 2017, Mr. Garrett and his team commissioned a full biodiversity audit of the estate. To the amazement of the participating scientists, the greatest diversity wasn’t in the woods, meadows or ponds that surround the house, but in the formal garden itself.

This garden hadn’t been rewilded, or left to its devices. On the contrary, it was the human intervention that made it so biologically rich. Mr. Garrett had phased out pesticides and fertilizers, and had a relaxed attitude to rotting logs and weeds, which provided a habitat for a diverse array of species. But it was the sheer density of the ornamental planting, its aesthetic exuberance and abundance, that was the key. The borders, with their plumes of giant fennel, their riots of poppies and mullein, provided a constant supply of nourishment, while the regular disturbance by the gardeners created a rich habitat for insects and mammals.

It was the antithesis of the selfish garden, hospitable to many types of life. As Mr. Garrett observed in Gardens Illustrated , environmentalists had previously thought that gardens contributed to habitat and species loss, sterile spaces created solely for human pleasure. The Great Dixter experiment demonstrated that gardening could be both aesthetically satisfying and environmentally beneficial.

This February, a study led by the University of Surrey analyzed how green spaces in cities can have a cooling effect in heat waves. While street trees, parks and wetlands all had an effect, the most pronounced results came from botanical gardens, which lowered temperatures in adjacent city streets by an average of nine degrees Fahrenheit.

This is the kind of visionary garden state I want to see flourish everywhere. You can glimpse its potential in projects like the landscape architect Nigel Dunnett’s Grey to Green, which transformed a rundown, traffic-heavy area in the English city of Sheffield into a series of interconnected rain gardens and bioswales . These capture extreme rainfall, reducing the risk of catastrophic flooding. That area is now a luminous patchwork of foxtail lilies, alliums and yarrow, interspersed with trees and grasses. The garden helps cool the city in heat waves, provides a corridor for wildlife and gives sheer pleasure to a mass of people, whether they can afford to own a garden or not.

My grandfather sowed so that others may reap

Throughout his 99 years, he had never been honored for the lives he changed, the careers he quietly made, or, most of all, the love he modeled. and he wouldn’t have dreamed of it..

If you’ve driven through Milton, odds are you saw my grandfather outside tending to his yard or the garden.

In his last few days on earth, my grandfather had a single request: plant my tomatoes.

Jiddoo, the Lebanese Arabic word for “grandfather,” had famously kept a large garden for decades at his Milton home. I once walked with wonder under the towering trellises of green beans and through the colorful stalks of Swiss chard. Any of Jiddoo’s grandchildren has spent many hours learning about the best way to stake a tomato and gotten their hands dirty harvesting thyme or parsley for Sittee’s — grandma’s — summer salads.

Even into his late 90s, my spry grandfather, who died May 2 , cultivated his garden. If you’ve driven through Milton, odds are you saw him outside tending to his yard or the garden in his tidy blue button-up and khaki pants. Summer visits were punctuated by parting gifts of peppers and cucumbers; not just a nourishing sign of his love but an effort to stave off any waste from the sometimes too-fertile plot.

That very aversion to waste made his final request for tomatoes initially strike me as odd. A child of the Great Depression, Jiddoo didn’t waste even his coffee grounds — he used them as fertilizer. He cringed at the sight of a Dunkin’ cup. And now he was requesting tomatoes he must have known he would never taste?

But the truth is that Jiddoo’s life was defined by sowing without the thought of reaping.

His aversion to waste led to prosperity but never opulence. Jiddoo was a model of moderation, from the words he used to the resources he consumed. He listened before giving an opinion. He mended his clothes instead of buying new ones. He ate all his leftovers before visiting a restaurant. And he saved when blessed with excess.

Then he gave splendidly. He quietly donated much of his wealth to cancer research, to our church, to his favorite charities, to family members starting new lives. And to lovingly spoiling his late wife. He sowed so that others may reap.

And throughout his 99 years, he had never been honored for the lives he changed, the careers he quietly made, or, most of all, the love he modeled. No plaques, no signs, no articles (minus those I have penned despite his bashful resistance). And he wouldn’t have dreamed of it.

Even at the annual Veteran’s Day parade in Milton, he declined to wear any hats or pins or his old uniform, which still fit the ever-slim nonagenarian. Nor would he stand when veterans were called to for recognition. He did this in honor of his friends from his hometown of Quincy who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Pacific while he used his engineering degree to honorably serve as a Naval engineer.

But in a couple months, if the rain is good and the rabbits are merciful, Jiddoo will get the only recognition he’s ever wanted as his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren gather on the sunny deck overlooking his garden for a final taste of Jiddoo’s tomatoes.
