4. He is trustworthy

Trust is one of the top good qualities in a man and is always included in the list of qualities in a husband.

Research shows that a trustworthy partner will make you feel more fulfilled in your relationship.

Trusting your man means you know you can share anything with him without being judged. Trust also helps you increase vulnerability and love.

A relationship where you feel safe, calm, and able to be vulnerable with your spouse will grow into a strong marriage.

There are many ways men instill a sense of confidence in women. First is transparency; if a man does not hide his past but openly includes you in every moment of his life, there is transparency in his attitude.

Psychologist Mert Şeker says that if a man can fulfill his responsibilities financially and morally, he can be considered a good husband candidate.

5. Talking about the future

One of the top qualities of a man that will show you he’s husband material is if he talks about your future together. This will show that he’s thinking long-term and is just as excited about commitment as you are.

All these are indeed qualities of a good husband!

9. Knowing how to resolve conflict

If you’re a man reading this article looking for tips on how to be a better husband to your wife, you can start by learning healthy conflict-resolution skills.

Healthy conflict resolution means that instead of attacking each other during an argument, you attack the problem as a team.

Listening is just as important as communication when it comes to problem-solving, so know when to speak and when to hear your partner out.

Do not use an argument as an excuse to get mean or throw a past misdeed in your spouse’s face. Instead, Practice getting in touch with your feelings and talk about what is bothering you.

10. He teaches you new things

Personal growth is high on the list of qualities of a good husband.

A husband who can teach you new things will contribute to your happiness.

SAGE Journal randomly assigned married couples to engage in different activities together for 1.5 hours a week over ten weeks.

The actions assigned were put into two categories- Exciting or Pleasant.

Results of the research found that couples who participated in the exciting activities showed higher levels of marital satisfaction than those in ‘pleasant’ activities.

11. A good husband respects his wife

One of the most important qualities to look for in a man is respect.

When a man respects you, it means that he will support your goals and dreams.

Respect means that a man will never cross boundaries or try to make you do something that you feel uncomfortable with.

A loving, respectful partner won’t call you names or say things to hurt your feelings purposely. He will be considerate of your feelings not only when speaking to you but also when making decisions.

Psychologist Mert Şeker stresses the importance of emotional intelligence at this point. Emotional intelligence is the ability to know what emotions mean and use, manage, and control these motivations to make the right decisions in people’s lives.

A man who uses his emotions effectively and sensibly can be a really good husband.

12. He is loyal

Loyalty is essential to a happy relationship . It is one of the most non-negotiable things to look for in a husband.

When loyalty is lacking, you will feel uneasy when you aren’t around your partner. You will constantly wonder what they’re up to and who they’re hanging out with.

On the other hand, loyalty is at the top of the list of qualities of a good husband.

A loyal partner will make you feel safe and secure as well as emotionally and physically taken care of.

13. Emotional maturity

One of the sweetest qualities of a good husband is finding someone who knows how to be silly and make you laugh while still possessing emotional maturity.

What is emotional maturity? It’s a man who:

  • Can manage his emotions no matter what is happening.
  • Knows how to keep his cool even when in a tough situation.
  • Acknowledges when he is wrong and apologizes
  • Takes steps toward understanding you better when you are upset

14. He knows how to forgive

This is not just one of the qualities of a good husband. This is a virtue to be nurtured by every human being.

Even the happiest couples aren’t going to get along every minute of every day. When frustrations get the best of you, the duties of a good husband will move him to forgive you.

Not only will this make your relationship run smoothly, but the Journal of Health Psychology found that higher levels of forgiveness contribute toward better mental health in relationships.

15. He shows compassion

Compassion moves your partner to understand you. He is able to put himself in your shoes and understand how you feel.

One of the best qualities of a good husband is a compassionate man who will empathize with your feelings and make you feel loved.

“It is also important for a man to be understanding, to observe you in a relationship, and to realize if you are going through a challenging situation so that you can see that he is compassionate.” Psychologist Mert Şeker

16. He maintains self-control

Envision a diabetic who has no self-control over the harmful foods they are eating. This would be a disaster for their health.

Similarly, imagine if your partner was self-serving in every possible way. Talk about a night marriage!

Self-control is essential for a healthy relationship with your spouse.

When your husband practices regular self-control, it means that he will:

  • Consider you before making decisions
  • Be a more giving lover
  • Avoid harmful pornography habits
  • Avoid flirting or being inappropriate with other women
  • Remain loyal

17. You are his best friend

One of the sweetest qualities of a good husband is when he calls you his best friend .

When you are with your best friend, you feel a sense of belonging. A best friend will have fun with you, share secrets, support you, and encourage self-love.

Not only does being best friends with your partner carry great emotional benefits but there are also health benefits too.

Research published by The Journal of Happiness found that couples who were best friends experienced higher levels of life satisfaction than other couples.

18. He has patience

Patience is a key quality to being a good husband.

The longer you’re together, the more likely you are to do something that might drive your partner bonkers.

A husband who has patience will give his wife grace and let go of the little things , choosing to be happy rather than choosing to nitpick.

Patience will carry couples through difficult times or lulls in the excitement of a marriage.

19. Your friends love him

Have you ever had a friend tell you he or she got a bad vibe from your crush?

Sometimes your friends can see your relationship clearer than you can. They aren’t blinded by love-producing oxytocin like you are.

A good man will be himself when he’s around your friend. He won’t put on a show for them.

If your spouse gets along well with your closest friends and families and your loved ones are giving you two thumbs up, odds are you have found the one.

20. He shows appreciation

Appreciation and gratitude may not seem like essential qualities of a good husband, but going years without someone acknowledging your love and support can be draining. You may feel like you’re living a thankless life.

As a wife, you pick up after your house and husband while potentially caring for children or working a full-time job. This can be exhausting.

The Journal of Psychological Assessment states that partners who express gratitude for each other are more likely to experience:

  • Greater relationship satisfaction
  • Pursuit of self-expansion,
  • Enhanced partner intimacy,
  • Greater support felt from your spouse

These are all excellent reasons to look for husband qualities revolving around expressions of appreciation and gratitude.

Here’s how gratitude makes you more attractive. Watch this video:

21. He’s a caring father to your children

A good husband who’s also a caring father takes an active role in parenting. He isn’t just present physically but emotionally too. He helps with bedtime stories, attends school events, and plays a part in your children’s lives.

He listens to their concerns, guides them, and creates a loving and nurturing environment at home. He shows that he cares about their well-being and growth.

22. He is adaptable

Being adaptable means he’s open to change and growth. Life is full of surprises and challenges, and an adaptable husband is willing to adjust. Whether it’s changes in your relationship, career, or personal goals, he’s supportive and flexible.

He understands that life isn’t always predictable and is willing to roll with the punches, making it easier to face whatever comes your way together.

23. He is a problem solver

A good husband doesn’t just point out problems; he actively works on solutions. When conflicts or challenges arise, he’s willing to sit down and discuss them.

He’s a partner in finding resolutions that work for both of you. He’s patient and persistent in figuring things out, creating a sense of security and trust in the relationship.

24. He is generous

Generosity in a husband goes beyond material things; it’s about giving of oneself. He’s generous with his time, affection, and support. He doesn’t keep score but gives because he cares.

Whether it’s helping with household chores, providing emotional support, or simply showing love, his generosity makes the relationship feel warm and abundant. It’s an expression of love and care that makes you feel valued and cherished.

25. He is forgiving

Forgiveness is a vital quality in a good husband. It means he doesn’t hold grudges or let past mistakes or conflicts define your relationship.

When you make a mistake or face a challenging time, he’s willing to let go of resentment and anger. He understands that we all have moments of imperfection and that forgiveness is a way to move forward.

50 Positive Words To Describe Your Husband

Share with your friends!

Choose positive words to describe your husband today!

The words we speak to our spouse have power. They have the power to build them up or tear them down.

It is normal for couples to take one another for granted over time, to get a little unconscious about the words we speak over one another. The solution to this is to choose to be intentional about what you say.

Partnership Patterns

Strong partnerships lean into one another’s strengths.

Leaning into strengths often means a division of labor,  regular rhythms of life, and being less conscientious about what and how things are said.

It is not unusual, for example, for a couple to stop kissing each other goodbye. To slip into a pattern of taking one another for granted even . Over time this will degrade the relationship.

Reinvest In Your Marriage Easily With The Way You Speak

Marriages need to be reinvested in regularly or they fade over time.

One way to do this is to speak encouragement into the life of your loved one. When you speak words of love, support, and encouragement it will not only build your partner up but break your relationship doldrums.

You will be amazed at how responsive your partner will be!

You’re probably wondering where you will find the words. That you don’t even know what words best describe your partner. Well, here is a list of words to help you out.

Instructions:

  • Read through the whole list with an eye for words that fit.
  • Pick a few words that fit our spouse best, that you can use daily.
  • Select a bold way to share these words with your spouse….

Some Bold Ways:

Write them in a letter and underline them.

Use them in a text message.

Make them dinner and make a special point of sharing them with her/him/they and why.

Put them in a post about your partner and tag them.

Make a video for your partner and share it with them.

Make or buy a card.

Be creative!

The bolder you are, the stronger the impression. Make no mistake, you are making an impression. This is a small declaration that you are done taking them for granted and ready, willing, and able to appreciate them (once again).

Ever wondered what makes a marriage great? Although every relationship is a little different, the same common traits are found in the strongest marriages. Trust, communication, and respect probably come to mind, but you might be surprised to learn that playfulness and friendship rank high, too. Read through these characteristics to see how your marriage compares.

You spend quality time around one another.

Strong couples make time for their relationship.

  • Work on a mutual project you've wanted to accomplish.
  • Take a language class together.
  • Go for a walk or jog after dinner.
  • Have a picnic the next time the weather's nice.
  • Watch a local comedian and laugh together.
  • Go on a day trip and explore a nearby town.

You keep the lines of communication open.

A good marriage means it's easy to share thoughts and feelings.

  • When you two talk, you also give each other your undivided attention. For instance, your spouse will put down their phone or get off their laptop when you want to tell them something.

You’re kind and respectful to each other.

A strong marriage is based on mutual love, so you show it.

  • Acts of kindness don't have to be huge! You could leave a sweet note, pack a lunch for your spouse, compliment them in front of others, or call them during the day to see how they're doing.

You’re both committed to the relationship.

You and your spouse support each other through thick and thin.

  • In healthy marriages, neither partner will threaten the other with divorce or withhold affection.

You think the best of your spouse.

Secure partners give each other the benefit of the doubt when they make mistakes.

  • For example, if your spouse is running late, don't think, "He can never be on time. He's never considerate enough to check in with me," tell yourself, "Traffic must be bad today. I know he said he'd try to make it home on time."

You have fun with each other.

Couples in a good marriage are playful and lighthearted.

  • For instance, you could play innocent pranks on your spouse, surprise them with a weekend getaway, or take them to a show they've wanted to see.

You show each other physical affection.

Physical connection makes you feel more trusting and secure.

  • Keep in mind that some people have a stronger need for physical touch while others are more reserved. Try to find a good balance of what you and your partner need in your marriage.

You both work on emotional and sexual intimacy.

Strong marriages have a deep connection, so spouses can support each other.

  • Being emotionally close means that you're vulnerable, but you trust your partner to respect and listen to you.

You successfully resolve conflicts.

Strong couples don't avoid fighting, but they use it as an opportunity to talk.

  • For example, instead of saying, "You never help around the house. You just don't appreciate what I do!" you could say, "Can we talk about household chores later? I'm feeling really stressed out."

You forgive your spouse.

You realize that your partner is human and will make mistakes.

  • If you can't forgive your spouse and choose to hold a grudge, you'll have a hard time emotionally connecting with them in the future.
  • Not sure how to forgive them? You might say, "I'm really hurt by what you did, but I love you and I want to get through this together."

You appreciate your partner.

You or your spouse frequently say that you're thankful for each other.

  • For instance, you could say, "Hey, thank you for making dinner tonight. It was wonderful," or, "Thanks for picking up the kids today. It really made my day easier."

How to Write About Marriage? Learn How to Write the Personal Essay

describe your husband essay

I TEACH ONLINE MEMOIR CLASSES and work as a memoir coach and memoir editor, and in those roles I get a lot of requests for teaching how to write the personal essay. The essay is my favorite medium and most of the essays I have written and published take on simple, domestic issues stemming from marriage and family. The key to writing from home is to stay small. You are most likely to succeed in delivering a feeling to the reader if you attempt to do so without telling us what that feeling is. Navigating this space of showing, not telling, is critical to the success of a good, domestic essay.

What do I mean by that? Just this: Let the reader do some of the work. Let them do the math. Let them read it and gather together the details without you having to say something like: Hey, look at how someone loves me . Just show us. How? Here’s an example.

Read this essay and leave in the comments what you notice about what does and does not get said, and what you feel at the end.

I HAVE THREE FREEZERS. There, I admit it. I do. A born and raised New Yorker, maybe I have nothing more or less than a shtetl mentality, some genetic holdover from a time when there was never plenty. But probably not, since the closest I’ve come to Anatevka was fourth row center seats for “Fiddler on the Roof” when I was twelve.

And so it remains one of the greater mysteries of my marriage – to my husband, that is – that I buy chickens and freeze them, make stock and freeze it, make pesto and freeze it, and that every once in a while in the blur that I am as I whirl between the three freezers, I put something into one of them that, well, simply doesn’t belong.

It’s good he doesn’t take it personally, though that is probably because I have assured him that this started long before our marriage, and that I once located a sumptuous pair of alligator loafers in the fridge after thinking for months that I had lost them. They were in a brown paper bag, exactly the size of a pizza slice, so it seems obvious to me what my mind did when I got home from the shoe repair. Into the fridge, I thought, and that, as they say, was that. So glad was I when I found them that there were no recriminations. Plus, at the time I lived alone, so I had no one with whom the share the joy of finding them. Cold, though they were, I merely slipped them on and instantly regained my sense of balance.

These days, I have an audience, as well as several mouths to feed. Along with providing food for the adults in my home, I also cook for our dog. He has allergies. Seven years we’ve been at it. The cost of this is 14 sweet potatoes and 14 chicken thighs each week, and so an enormous canvas bag of sweet potatoes sits on top of the chest freezer in the garage (did I forget to mention that of the three freezers, one is the chest variety?) It’s the kind of bag that ship riggers use. Strong handled and sturdy, we need it for when the price is low – a recent 99 cents/pound, for instance – and we buy in bulk. It’s hard to lose.

Or so you might think.

Saturday was a cooking day for me, and so I am writing in real time here, reporting from the front. The last of the parsnips, all of the frozen vegetable scrapings, cilantro stems and other tidbits from the freezer went into the cauldron-sized stock pot. Back and forth from the freezers I went, finding tempting stashes of things to add.

“Oh look,” I said to the dog, “Chives!” The dog gave me the look he always gives me. It’s lovely to be adored no matter what you do.

My chives are now up in my kitchen garden, so clearly the frozen ones had to go into the soup. And in they went. And more things came to mind, and apparently I was wearing one of my many pair of glasses and carrying a mug of tea while I triangulated my way between my freezers. And then the washing machine sang its little song it sings when the load is done and the triangulation became a parallelogram and I added an upstairs trip.

The soup was creating that kind of happy haze it does when the aroma has taken over the house, and everything seemed right with the world. Out to the freezer I went again when I noticed the mega bag of potatoes was gone. Missing. Thinking it might help if I could see better, I patted myself down for my eyeglasses. Gone too. And what about that tea? Wasn’t I drinking something just moments ago?

Opening the stand freezer I was delighted to find the full bag of potatoes quietly cooling inside. Not that alarming, really. Many remarkable things have been unearthed there, including a portable phone and a book. It happens. And being a good wife, I called to my husband.

“Look, honey!” He came in from the kitchen, and that look on his face was the dividend check, the little extra I get from years of investing in this life.

The glasses? They were in the laundry hamper. Obviously. But it was my husband who found the tea mug, hours later, in that grand sweep I now realize he quietly does every day and last thing on most nights, simply putting everything back in its place so we can get on with our lives.

Tips for How to Write The Personal Essay:

Most of my essays come from domestic moments. Before I set out to write from my idea of home, I read extensively. Specifically, when learning how to write about marriage, domesticity or cooking, I can credit the great Laurie Colwin, Russell Baker and Nora Ephron for some great provocation. I read and I learned how to write the personal essay.

Marion – I laughed out loud as I read this. In our house, we take turns finding what the other has lost as we wander through our home and our lives. I still recall the day that my cell phone rang just as I pulled into work. It was my love, speaking in that confused, amazed, indignant, frustrated tone that signals the loss of something crucial. In this case it was his glasses, his last pair. He couldn’t drive without them. He was late for work. He could no longer think clearly about where to look. “Would you like me to come home?” I asked. “Would you?” he said. And twenty minutes later there we were, retracing his steps. “Did you check the laundry closet?” I asked. “I wouldn’t have put them there!” he said. Which of course spoke volumes. I went in, opened the washing machine and there they were at the bottom of the drum, the lenses staring up at me. I didn’t crow or chortle or get too mad. By then I’d learned what we both know all too well, that it is only a matter of time before I’ve lost my keys, again, in my purse.

Oh, that’s lovely, Betsy. Thank you for being in the club, and willingly admitting to it. Please come back soon for more. I sometimes forget what rich fodder is there is marriage. The everyday is the best place to go for material, isn’t it?

Now I was waiting to hear that at least one of those freezers had a stock of Creme de la Mer–just in case, or your favorite red lipstick–also just in case. That I would understand, or for storing cashmere crew necks, which I understand store best in freezing cold storage. Chickens? Chives? Lordy–the things I learn about you.

Not even a small freezer bag of lipsticks?

I have a clear childhood memory of my mother standing in front of the freezer, dumbstruck, as she pulled out her purse. When I laughed she said, “I’m not worried about the purse. Now I just need to find the damn ice cream.”

Now that I am of that certain age, I completely understand.

Marion, I’m guessing you can hear my laughing all the way from Portland, OR to the east coast! Such a funny story you’ve shared, and one which many of us can relate to in one way or another. I don’t have a chest freezer, and I only have one freezer other than the one with the fridge. But I do manage to lose things in that tall freezer residing in a garage that is really my husband’s workshop and not a garage at all. I’m wondering now if that’s where he’s lost all those books of blank checks he was looking for and perhaps it’s where I might find the springtime blouse I can’t find now that it’s spring. I’ll go look!

Kathleen Pooler says

Oh my gosh, Marion, you had me laughing out loud as I recalled my own stories of “losing “my eyeglasses which were sitting on my head or finding the box of Triscuits in the refrigerator and wondering who could have possibly done that?? I’m so happy I’m not alone in this. Thank you for sharing!

The cilantro stem, the dividend check (just beautiful – a ROI), something about the sturdy bag reminded me of my grandmother’s cool damp cellar. I had to read the essay twice to know why the last sentence struck me – the grand sweep, but it was your words “that I now realize” he does…I do the grand sweep of our night stands every morning. It is part of my morning rhythm after he leaves for work. And moreso, I pick up clues – an empty ice cream bowl tells me he stayed up later than me and will have a story to tell about an episode or a news piece, business cards tell me he’s mowing today, the gold PO Box key – he’ll be calling for it any minute. As I do the sweep each morning, I think of him and wonder if he knows how it happens. I suppose I’m waiting for that ROI!

It is lovely how you provided a portrait of a loving marriage through your articulation of your meanderings in the kitchen, the items you lose, and those that are found by your husband. Thank you for the lesson!

Wendy Komancheck says

Hiya Marion: I’m glad I’m not the only one leaving things in odd places. Your husband should start a support group for men whose wives are forgetful! :) It’s the artist/creative inside us! My older son also has had to suffer with my absent-mindedness–but he thinks I lost my mind. I always reply, “I wasn’t always like this. It wasn’t until I had kids.) Said in jest, of course.:) Thank you for sharing!

Colleen Golafshan says

April 9, 2020 at 1:57 am

Oh, I relate to misplacing items – sometimes not finding them for years. This morning I happily found, from a pile I’d pulled out behind my desk, a hard copy of your recommended memoir books, which I wanted as I research my first memoir essay (after working on book-length projects). It’s about my years as a homeschooling stay-at-home mum, my failings and asking forgiveness of my two beautiful children, now rewarded with their amazing love in hard times.

Here’s what I heard in your essay: You’re a born and raised New Yorker, genetically but distantly Jewish. You love to keep food frozen and at the ready in your three freezers, which include a chest freezer on which you keep a canvas bag of sweet potatoes for the dog.

On Saturday, while whirling around creating a cauldron-sized soup–with parsnips, vegetable scraps, cilantro stems, chives and other tidbits–and carrying a mug of tea, you had to attend to your clothes washing.

Once the soup was on, creating a happy haze of aroma through the house, you noticed the sweet potatoes were missing, as well as the glasses you’d been wearing and your tea. You found the sweet potatoes in a standing freezer. Showing this to your husband, he rewarded you with a look, a paycheck for all the years you’ve invested in his life. The glasses turned up in the laundry hamper but your tea mug wasn’t found for hours, and then by your husband.

What you did not say in the essay: Apart from your preamble about the art of memoir which should show rather than say, Hey Look at how someone loves me, you don’t actually say your husband loves you or that you love him and the home you’ve created. But these facts well up through the peace you describe at home, despite the chaos sometimes caused by misplacing items. There you have an audience of an adoring dog and a husband who not only shares your joy of finding things in unusual places but who balances your tendency to leave such things out of place with his quiet nightly routine.

When you lived alone, it took longer to regain your sense of balance after misplacing your loafers than these days when your husband quietly ‘sweeps’ through the house at night to find misplaced items.

How I feel after this review is grateful for the peace you feel and share when New York is in chaos with so many affected by coronavirus. However, this was not a clear feeling on my first read.

As an Australian, I often feel at a loss to fully translate others’ communicated lifestyles into exactly what is meant, as I did when I first read this essay. Using maps and looking up word definitions helps (eg. shtelt). For example, I love listening to your inspiring podcasts, yet I often feel I lose a lot of rich context, especially when interviewed authors are from your area and you have shared history, far from my western Sydney townhouse. I’ve not been to New York, though I’ve stayed with friends and family living in Minnesota and California. These days I travel in books and online as I learn to live with low-grade lymphoma that limits even local travel.

These values serve as the undercurrent that weaves together the fabric of your personality, giving coherence and purpose to your thoughts and behaviors. Understanding how your personality traits align with your core values enables you to articulate a more comprehensive and authentic depiction of yourself.

To breathe life into your personality description, it is crucial to gather evidence and examples that showcase your traits in action. Recall specific instances where your personality has manifested itself, and examine the behaviors, thoughts, and emotions that were present. By drawing on these concrete examples, you provide tangible proof of your personality claims, allowing the reader to envision your character in vivid detail.

Telling the Story of Yourself: 6 Steps to Writing Personal Narratives

writing personal narratives

Table of Contents

Why do we write personal narratives, 6 guidelines for writing personal narrative essays, inspiring personal narratives, examples of personal narrative essays, tell your story.

First off, you might be wondering: what is a personal narrative? In short, personal narratives are stories we tell about ourselves that focus on our growth, lessons learned, and reflections on our experiences.

From stories about inspirational figures we heard as children to any essay, article, or exercise where we're asked to express opinions on a situation, thing, or individual—personal narratives are everywhere.

According to Psychology Today, personal narratives allow authors to feel and release pains, while savouring moments of strength and resilience. Such emotions provide an avenue for both authors and readers to connect while supporting healing in the process.

That all sounds great. But when it comes to putting the words down on paper, we often end up with a list of experiences and no real structure to tie them together.

In this article, we'll discuss what a personal narrative essay is further, learn the 6 steps to writing one, and look at some examples of great personal narratives.

As readers, we're fascinated by memoirs, autobiographies, and long-form personal narrative articles, as they provide a glimpse into the authors' thought processes, ideas, and feelings. But you don't have to be writing your whole life story to create a personal narrative.

You might be a student writing an admissions essay , or be trying to tell your professional story in a cover letter. Regardless of your purpose, your narrative will focus on personal growth, reflections, and lessons.

Personal narratives help us connect with other people's stories due to their easy-to-digest format and because humans are empathising creatures.

We can better understand how others feel and think when we were told stories that allow us to see the world from their perspectives. The author's "I think" and "I feel" instantaneously become ours, as the brain doesn't know whether what we read is real or imaginary.

In her best-selling book Wired for Story, Lisa Cron explains that the human brain craves tales as it's hard-wired through evolution to learn what happens next. Since the brain doesn't know whether what you are reading is actual or not, we can register the moral of the story cognitively and affectively.

In academia, a narrative essay tells a story which is experiential, anecdotal, or personal. It allows the author to creatively express their thoughts, feelings, ideas, and opinions. Its length can be anywhere from a few paragraphs to hundreds of pages.

Outside of academia, personal narratives are known as a form of journalism or non-fiction works called "narrative journalism." Even highly prestigious publications like the New York Times and Time magazine have sections dedicated to personal narratives. The New Yorke is a magazine dedicated solely to this genre.

The New York Times holds personal narrative essay contests. The winners are selected because they:

had a clear narrative arc with a conflict and a main character who changed in some way. They artfully balanced the action of the story with reflection on what it meant to the writer. They took risks, like including dialogue or playing with punctuation, sentence structure and word choice to develop a strong voice. And, perhaps most important, they focused on a specific moment or theme – a conversation, a trip to the mall, a speech tournament, a hospital visit – instead of trying to sum up the writer’s life in 600 words.

In a nutshell, a personal narrative can cover any reflective and contemplative subject with a strong voice and a unique perspective, including uncommon private values. It's written in first person and the story encompasses a specific moment in time worthy of a discussion.

Writing a personal narrative essay involves both objectivity and subjectivity. You'll need to be objective enough to recognise the importance of an event or a situation to explore and write about. On the other hand, you must be subjective enough to inject private thoughts and feelings to make your point.

With personal narratives, you are both the muse and the creator – you have control over how your story is told. However, like any other type of writing, it comes with guidelines.

1. Write Your Personal Narrative as a Story

As a story, it must include an introduction, characters, plot, setting, climax, anti-climax (if any), and conclusion. Another way to approach it is by structuring it with an introduction, body, and conclusion. The introduction should set the tone, while the body should focus on the key point(s) you want to get across. The conclusion can tell the reader what lessons you have learned from the story you've just told.

2. Give Your Personal Narrative a Clear Purpose

Your narrative essay should reflect your unique perspective on life. This is a lot harder than it sounds. You need to establish your perspective, the key things you want your reader to take away, and your tone of voice. It's a good idea to have a set purpose in mind for the narrative before you start writing.

Let's say you want to write about how you manage depression without taking any medicine. This could go in any number of ways, but isolating a purpose will help you focus your writing and choose which stories to tell. Are you advocating for a holistic approach, or do you want to describe your emotional experience for people thinking of trying it?

Having this focus will allow you to put your own unique take on what you did (and didn't do, if applicable), what changed you, and the lessons learned along the way.

3. Show, Don't Tell

It's a narration, so the narrative should show readers what happened, instead of telling them. As well as being a storyteller, the author should take part as one of the characters. Keep this in mind when writing, as the way you shape your perspective can have a big impact on how your reader sees your overarching plot. Don't slip into just explaining everything that happened because it happened to you. Show your reader with action.

dialogue tags

You can check for instances of telling rather than showing with ProWritingAid. For example, instead of:

"You never let me do anything!" I cried disdainfully.
"You never let me do anything!" To this day, my mother swears that the glare I levelled at her as I spat those words out could have soured milk.

Using ProWritingAid will help you find these instances in your manuscript and edit them without spending hours trawling through your work yourself.

4. Use "I," But Don't Overuse It

You, the author, take ownership of the story, so the first person pronoun "I" is used throughout. However, you shouldn't overuse it, as it'd make it sound too self-centred and redundant.

ProWritingAid can also help you here – the Style Report will tell you if you've started too many sentences with "I", and show you how to introduce more variation in your writing.

5. Pay Attention to Tenses

Tense is key to understanding. Personal narratives mostly tell the story of events that happened in the past, so many authors choose to use the past tense. This helps separate out your current, narrating voice and your past self who you are narrating. If you're writing in the present tense, make sure that you keep it consistent throughout.

tenses in narratives

6. Make Your Conclusion Satisfying

Satisfy your readers by giving them an unforgettable closing scene. The body of the narration should build up the plot to climax. This doesn't have to be something incredible or shocking, just something that helps give an interesting take on your story.

The takeaways or the lessons learned should be written without lecturing. Whenever possible, continue to show rather than tell. Don't say what you learned, narrate what you do differently now. This will help the moral of your story shine through without being too preachy.

GoodReads is a great starting point for selecting read-worthy personal narrative books. Here are five of my favourites.

Owl Moon by Jane Yolen

Jane Yolen, the author of 386 books, wrote this poetic story about a daughter and her father who went owling. Instead of learning about owls, Yolen invites readers to contemplate the meaning of gentleness and hope.

Night by Elie Wiesel

Elie Wiesel was a teenager when he and his family were sent to Auschwitz concentration camp in 1944. This Holocaust memoir has a strong message that such horrific events should never be repeated.

The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank

This classic is a must-read by young and old alike. It's a remarkable diary by a 13-year-old Jewish girl who hid inside a secret annexe of an old building during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands in 1942.

The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion

This is a personal narrative written by a brave author renowned for her clarity, passion, and honesty. Didion shares how in December 2003, she lost her husband of 40 years to a massive heart attack and dealt with the acute illness of her only daughter. She speaks about grief, memories, illness, and hope.

Educated by Tara Westover

Author Tara Westover was raised by survivalist parents. She didn't go to school until 17 years of age, which later took her to Harvard and Cambridge. It's a story about the struggle for quest for knowledge and self-reinvention.

Narrative and personal narrative journalism are gaining more popularity these days. You can find distinguished personal narratives all over the web.

Curating the best of the best of personal narratives and narrative essays from all over the web. Some are award-winning articles.

Narratively

Long-form writing to celebrate humanity through storytelling. It publishes personal narrative essays written to provoke, inspire, and reflect, touching lesser-known and overlooked subjects.

Narrative Magazine

It publishes non, fiction narratives, poetry, and fiction. Among its contributors is Frank Conroy, the author of Stop-Time , a memoir that has never been out of print since 1967.

Thought Catalog

Aimed at Generation Z, it publishes personal narrative essays on self-improvement, family, friendship, romance, and others.

Personal narratives will continue to be popular as our brains are wired for stories. We love reading about others and telling stories of ourselves, as they bring satisfaction and a better understanding of the world around us.

Personal narratives make us better humans. Enjoy telling yours!

describe your husband essay

"To My Dear and Loving Husband" is a poem by the Colonial American poet Anne Bradstreet. The poem was first published in 1678, as part of Bradstreet's posthumous collection Several Poems . Bradstreet was the first poet—and the first woman—in colonial America to write and publish a book of poems. The poem is autobiographical and describes the passionate love between the speaker and her husband. The speaker describes that love as pure and redemptive. The poem thus implicitly argues against some religious poets who describe love as a sinful or unholy act.

You May Want to Marry My Husband

describe your husband essay

By Amy Krouse Rosenthal

  • March 3, 2017

Note: Amy Krouse Rosenthal died on March 13, 2017, 10 days after this essay was published. You can read her obituary here . In June, 2018, her husband published this response .

I have been trying to write this for a while, but the morphine and lack of juicy cheeseburgers (what has it been now, five weeks without real food?) have drained my energy and interfered with whatever prose prowess remains. Additionally, the intermittent micronaps that keep whisking me away midsentence are clearly not propelling my work forward as quickly as I would like. But they are, admittedly, a bit of trippy fun.

Still, I have to stick with it, because I’m facing a deadline, in this case, a pressing one. I need to say this (and say it right) while I have a) your attention, and b) a pulse.

I have been married to the most extraordinary man for 26 years. I was planning on at least another 26 together.

Want to hear a sick joke? A husband and wife walk into the emergency room in the late evening on Sept. 5, 2015. A few hours and tests later, the doctor clarifies that the unusual pain the wife is feeling on her right side isn’t the no-biggie appendicitis they suspected but rather ovarian cancer.

[ Sign up for Love Letter, our weekly email . And catch up on all things Modern Love .]

As the couple head home in the early morning of Sept. 6, somehow through the foggy shock of it all, they make the connection that today, the day they learned what had been festering, is also the day they would have officially kicked off their empty-nestering. The youngest of their three children had just left for college.

So many plans instantly went poof.

No trip with my husband and parents to South Africa. No reason, now, to apply for the Harvard Loeb Fellowship. No dream tour of Asia with my mother. No writers’ residencies at those wonderful schools in India, Vancouver, Jakarta.

No wonder the word cancer and cancel look so similar.

This is when we entered what I came to think of as Plan “Be,” existing only in the present. As for the future, allow me to introduce you to the gentleman of this article, Jason Brian Rosenthal.

He is an easy man to fall in love with. I did it in one day.

Let me explain: My father’s best friend since summer camp, “Uncle” John, had known Jason and me separately our whole lives, but Jason and I had never met. I went to college out east and took my first job in California. When I moved back home to Chicago, John — who thought Jason and I were perfect for each other — set us up on a blind date.

It was 1989. We were only 24. I had precisely zero expectations about this going anywhere. But when he knocked on the door of my little frame house, I thought, “Uh-oh, there is something highly likable about this person.”

By the end of dinner, I knew I wanted to marry him.

Jason? He knew a year later.

I have never been on Tinder, Bumble or eHarmony, but I’m going to create a general profile for Jason right here, based on my experience of coexisting in the same house with him for, like, 9,490 days.

First, the basics: He is 5-foot-10, 160 pounds, with salt-and-pepper hair and hazel eyes.

The following list of attributes is in no particular order because everything feels important to me in some way.

He is a sharp dresser. Our young adult sons, Justin and Miles, often borrow his clothes. Those who know him — or just happen to glance down at the gap between his dress slacks and dress shoes — know that he has a flair for fabulous socks. He is fit and enjoys keeping in shape.

If our home could speak, it would add that Jason is uncannily handy. On the subject of food — man, can he cook. After a long day, there is no sweeter joy than seeing him walk in the door, plop a grocery bag down on the counter, and woo me with olives and some yummy cheese he has procured before he gets to work on the evening’s meal.

Jason loves listening to live music; it’s our favorite thing to do together. I should also add that our 19-year-old daughter, Paris, would rather go to a concert with him than anyone else.

A Conversation Between Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Her Daughter

When I was working on my first memoir, I kept circling sections my editor wanted me to expand upon. She would say, “I’d like to see more of this character.”

Of course, I would agree — he was indeed a captivating character. But it was funny because she could have just said: “Jason. Let’s add more about Jason.”

He is an absolutely wonderful father. Ask anyone. See that guy on the corner? Go ahead and ask him; he’ll tell you. Jason is compassionate — and he can flip a pancake.

Jason paints. I love his artwork. I would call him an artist except for the law degree that keeps him at his downtown office most days from 9 to 5. Or at least it did before I got sick.

If you’re looking for a dreamy, let’s-go-for-it travel companion, Jason is your man. He also has an affinity for tiny things: taster spoons, little jars, a mini-sculpture of a couple sitting on a bench, which he presented to me as a reminder of how our family began.

Here is the kind of man Jason is: He showed up at our first pregnancy ultrasound with flowers. This is a man who, because he is always up early, surprises me every Sunday morning by making some kind of oddball smiley face out of items near the coffeepot: a spoon, a mug, a banana.

This is a man who emerges from the minimart or gas station and says, “Give me your palm.” And, voilà, a colorful gumball appears. (He knows I love all the flavors but white.)

My guess is you know enough about him now. So let’s swipe right.

Wait. Did I mention that he is incredibly handsome? I’m going to miss looking at that face of his.

If he sounds like a prince and our relationship seems like a fairy tale, it’s not too far off, except for all of the regular stuff that comes from two and a half decades of playing house together. And the part about me getting cancer. Blech.

In my most recent memoir (written entirely before my diagnosis), I invited readers to send in suggestions for matching tattoos, the idea being that author and reader would be bonded by ink.

I was totally serious about this and encouraged submitters to be serious as well. Hundreds poured in. A few weeks after publication in August, I heard from a 62-year-old librarian in Milwaukee named Paulette.

She suggested the word “more.” This was based on an essay in the book where I mention that “more” was my first spoken word (true). And now it may very well be my last (time shall tell).

In September, Paulette drove down to meet me at a Chicago tattoo parlor. She got hers (her very first) on her left wrist. I got mine on the underside of my left forearm, in my daughter’s handwriting. This was my second tattoo; the first is a small, lowercase “j” that has been on my ankle for 25 years. You can probably guess what it stands for. Jason has one too, but with more letters: “AKR.”

I want more time with Jason. I want more time with my children. I want more time sipping martinis at the Green Mill Jazz Club on Thursday nights. But that is not going to happen. I probably have only a few days left being a person on this planet. So why I am doing this?

I am wrapping this up on Valentine’s Day, and the most genuine, non-vase-oriented gift I can hope for is that the right person reads this, finds Jason, and another love story begins.

I’ll leave this intentional empty space below as a way of giving you two the fresh start you deserve.

With all my love, Amy

1. Dear husband,

Image: Created with Dall·E

The day we married is one of the best days of my life, as on that day I found my best friend for life. It is true, I was skeptical in the beginning, but you made me feel so loved and comfortable, that I cannot imagine a life without you. Now, I genuinely feel I am the luckiest girl on earth, for I have a man who is loyal to me.

I want to confess that, every night after you drift away to sleep, I stay awake just to watch you sleep. You may think I am crazy, but I cannot help it, I am obsessed with you. I only want one thing in life now, to be your only love forever .

Your loving wife.

2. Dear husband,

I know we are no ordinary couple, we had many ups and downs, and our relationship has seen some of the worst storms. But we survived all that and here we are together. No matter how much we fight, my heart still flutters upon seeing you. I still dream about our romantic dates and late night conversations.

You may not know, even when I am busy at work, I sneak peeks at your picture and smile. I read our old conversations and want to relive all those sweet moments. After every fight, even though I stay adamant on the outside, deep inside I crave for your touch and cannot wait to end the fight.

With lots of love,

3. Darling husband,

These few words are not enough to tell you how much I love you , but still sending you my true feelings through this letter. The day I met you, I thought you are also just like any other guy, but you proved me wrong, you made me believe in the phrase “There are no perfect men, but one man is perfect for you.” After meeting you, I never felt the need to look at another man, as you made me feel complete and safe. I am glad that it did not work out with any other guy as it did with you.

Always your loving wife (name).

4. Dear hubby,

I know I am not the most beautiful woman in the world, nor do I possess all the qualities of a good wife , but you never made me feel any less of myself. You loved me for who I am and never tried to change me. This motivated me to work on myself to bring out the best in me. Even after all these years, I still feel jealous when a passerby lady glances at you — that is how much I want you to be mine.

I still remember the day I saw you, you were wearing a neatly tucked white shirt, jeans, and a smile which I can never forget in my life. I was a nervous wreck, as you were so confident and good looking. But you made me comfortable, and all my insecurities vanished. Thank you for that and more. I love you so much.

With lots of love name.

5. Dear husband,

I was hopelessly romantic, waiting for the prince charming to sweep me off my feet. The world said I was living in a fantasy until you came along. Now the same world talks about how lucky I am. I can never forget the day we met, it was love at first sight for me, (even though I did not confess first), I was smitten and head-over-heels for you. I couldn’t stop rambling about how handsome you were, to my friends. And today I cannot believe I am your wife, and the best part is waking up in the middle of the night only to find you beside me. I love you to the moon and back darling.

Your silly wife.

6. Dear husband,

Although I do not tell this often, I do love you more than anyone can ever love you. If I had a flower every time I missed you, I would be walking in a garden. This distance between us is unbearable, and I miss you more as each day passes by. You are on my mind every second. Whether I am sleeping, eating or working, you are my constant thought. Now my life revolves around two things, counting days to meet you and reminiscing the memories until I meet you again. I hope this physical distance will soon disappear and we can spend the rest of our lives together forever.

Miss you hubby.

7. Dear hubby,

Every morning I wake up, I see your face. This one thing makes my day beautiful. Your face has the power to positively transform my whole day. You know I am not a morning person. But when I wake up and look at you, my frustration of waking up early vanishes in a blink. I know I will have a good day because you are with me. I am happy I decided to marry you and chose to see you first thing in the morning for the rest of my life. I love you so much.

Your not-a-morning-person wifey.

8. My darling husband,

Did you imagine we would be together for the rest of our lives when I met you? We met by chance at the public library, and I remember us still in the dark aisle, laughing over P.G. Wodehouse. From then to now, I’d say not much has changed. We still love books and still share a laugh over the same things. What has changed, though, is our love for each other. We have come a long way from barely knowing each other to being inseparable. And I hope we will continue to be like this until the end of time.

Your bookworm.

9. Dear husband,

Some people say “love at first sight” does not exist. I’d say they are wrong. I knew I loved you when I first laid my eyes on you. But when you confessed your feelings for me, I felt divine intervention had brought us together. We were both wandering souls who met each other by chance and now are in wedlock for life!

I cannot imagine a single day without you. I often wonder what I would do if I had never met you. But then I realize that I did, and God gave me the greatest gift of you as a lovely husband.

I love you forever and always,

10. Darling husband,

From the moment I saw you, my heart found a new home. We have spent many years together and built many beautiful memories. As I look back, I cannot help but smile and wonder how I got so lucky with you. You are the most sensitive and understanding husband a woman could ask for. You are my friend, my confidant, and a solid support system. I am so lucky and grateful to have you. I love you.

11. Dear husband,

Every new day is a new adventure with you. Do you recall the moment the kitchen was flooded when you attempted to repair the sink tap? Or the occasion when all the fire alarms blared because I forgot to turn off the stove? I can’t recall laughing as heartily at even the most amusing jokes as I did back then. We’ve experienced our share of ups and downs and emerged even stronger together. Thank you for giving me a new adventurous life. Even with broken pipes and burning stoves, I am confident we will find happiness in each other’s company.

Your forgetful wife.

12. Hello, my dear,

I still remember the day we first met. We were both so nervous. But the moment we began talking, I knew you were the one for me. The way you made me comfortable is something I cherish even now. You know I am a huge introvert, and I appreciate that you don’t compel me to attend massive parties and meet people because you know I won’t enjoy it. I admire how you look after my small likes and dislikes. I thank God for blessing me with such a wonderful husband.

I love you from the bottom of my heart.

Your lovestruck introvert wife.

Dearest, I have no words to describe how much I love you. I wish I were a poet to express my feelings beautifully through words. All I can say is you mean the world to me. My day starts with you and ends with you. Life is never fair, there will always be many ups and downs, but what makes it worth it is to have a reliable and trustworthy guy like you. On this special day, I would also like to thank your mother for raising you into a perfect gentleman. And I wish our kids will grow up being like you.

One of the best qualities you possess is that you are sensitive to others’ pain. I still remember how you had given your favorite t-shirt to a shivering homeless man. Living with you, I learned the real happiness lies in selflessness. Thank you for opening up a whole new world for me. I pray to God to give you the strength to continue being the amazing person you are.

With loads of love,

17. Dear husband’s name,

From being my childhood friend to being my teenage crush to being my husband, we have been with each other through thick and thin. People often ask me if I ever get bored of you, I would ask them, “‘how can I get bored of my own shadow?” You are my partner in crime, my guide during difficult times, and my all-time favorite person.

Thank you for bearing with me all these years, I know I can be difficult sometimes. And you had so many reasons for giving up on us. But always you chose to stay and make things work. This year is going to be pretty special for both of us, as we are going to become parents soon. And I know you would make an excellent father as well.

Happy birthday to you!

Yours forever (name).

18. Dear husband,

Very happy birthday to you!

I know you will have a smile after seeing this letter, as this is the first time I am putting down my feelings in words. Thank you for being such a great husband. You never made me feel alone; you always made sure I was happy. No one has given me so much happiness. I am proud that our marriage is strong, all thanks to you and your dedication towards our relationship.

I hope your birthday is filled with joy. Happy birthday dear!

Your loving wife (name).

19. Dear birthday boy,

I am so excited it is your birthday today! I know you don’t like elaborate displays and celebrations so I have just the best idea for you. It is a surprise that you will get to uncover later. But in the meantime, let me tell you how honestly amazing you are. You are the best husband in the whole world! You are caring, sensitive, understanding, romantic…the list goes on. What more could a girl wish for?

All I want for you today is a perfect birthday, and that is what you will get. I wish you a delightful birthday!

20. Husband dearest,

On your birthday, let me tell you how deeply I love you. With you, every day is a new story. And not just any ordinary story but a beautiful fairy tale. I love everything about you. Your voice is my favorite melody, and your touch is my solace. Thank you for being a part of my life and accompanying me on life’s long journey. I wish you a very happy birthday and may you celebrate a lot more in the years to come.

21. Dear husband,

Do you remember how we celebrated our birthdays when we were children? And how have you always shared the first slice of cake with me? I am so glad this practice has not stopped, though many years have passed. As we grew up and transitioned from friends to lovers to partners, our love for each other has grown in leaps and bounds. Your charm and energy that captivated me so many years ago are still strong and evident. Happy birthday, my love.

Your love-smitten wife.

22. Dear husband,

On this special day, allow me to celebrate the occasion and the person. You are such an incredible man, and I often am amazed to have you. You have filled my life with joy and happiness. Though it is your birthday, I must say I have received the biggest gift: a loving and supportive husband. I love you. Happy birthday, sweetheart.

Your lucky wife.

Letters To The Husband On The Wedding Day And Anniversary

Anniversaries are special, as they give an opportunity to celebrate the remarkable day that made you both husband and wife. Here are a few sample letters to wish your husband a happy anniversary.

If you are about to get married, and looking for some inspiration to write one last letter before becoming his Mrs., we have covered that too.

23. Dear husband,

A happy wedding anniversary!

Today marks the completion of our first year together as husband and wife. I cannot believe it’s been a year since we got married. I guess we lost track of time as we were too busy being happy. Before getting married, I heard my friends say how difficult the first year of marriage could be. But I am surprised that our first year was the most wonderful year of my life. And it was all because of you.

Even though we had our fair share of fights, we never let them get in the way of our love. I wish we stay the same happy-go-lucky couple forever.

Yours loving wife name

24. Darling husband,

Today is our 25th anniversary . I feel it was just yesterday when you were in that black and white tux, nervously waiting for me at the end of the aisle. And I was walking cautiously both not to trip over and to maintain my bridal posture. I am surprised how so many years passed so quickly. Maybe because you still love me in the same way as you did from day one.

These 25 years were magical; they helped us grow and love each other more and more. We started our family and raised our kids into good citizens. When I look back, the only thing I can see is how you held my hand at every step. Here is to 25 more years.

Happy 25th anniversary dear.

Yours (name).

25. My dear husband,

Happy anniversary to us!

Another year went by as husband and wife. I agree the past year was not all merry for us. We have seen some of the worst times, and thank god we survived all of it and are united as a family. I must give the credit of this to you, as you have been the true example of the word ‘head of the family’. You held everything together and directed us towards the right path. I cannot imagine facing the situation without you.

All thanks to god and you, the dark times are over, and all that lies ahead is happiness. This anniversary is very special, because now, finally we have put the past behind and move on as one strong and happy family.

26. Dear husband,

Today is the day when we said “I do” and promised to be together forever. I am glad that we could keep our promises. I never thought two strangers could fall in love and become so inseparable, but here we are. I barely knew you, when we got married, and I had my share of doubts about us. After all these years, I can proudly say I made the right choice in life.

You welcomed me into your family with an open mind, adjusted and sacrificed many things for the sake of my happiness. I think all I can do to repay you is by being the loving wife you always wanted me to be. I still remember the burnt dish I served you for the first time, and how you ate it without complaining. What did I do to deserve such a caring and understanding husband? I wish we had met earlier so that I could be your wife for some more time.

Happy anniversary my man.

27. My dear,

The day that seemed so distant is finally here. I have butterflies fluttering in my stomach; I cannot keep calm. My friends say these could be pre-wedding jitters. But I feel I am just too happy and cannot wait to be your wife. Call me crazy, but I have already rehearsed our wedding for the 1,000th time now.

Darling, we are going to start an incredible journey together, which is not always easy, but it will be worth it, as long as we are there for each other. I hope you are as ready as I am to live in a house and call it home, have beautiful children and call it our family. This day is a special day for most girls like me, who have found their soulmate. So let us do this right and start the adventure together.

Your would-be wife (name).

28. My darling,

In just a few hours I will be your wife! I want to scream and tell the whole world how happy I am. I hope tomorrow will be perfect as I imagined in my head. Everything was just magical, we meeting each other accidentally, becoming friends, and finally you asking me to marry you. I am thankful to God that we have found each other; there are billions of people in this world, and God has chosen you and me to be together. It is such a beautiful coincidence.

I hope you also cannot wait to start this fabulous journey with me. I know it is a little overwhelming, but that is how life is. I promise to be with you through thick and thin and support you as your wife.

Your future wife (name).

29. Dear husband,

Your love is my anchor in life. Whenever I am in trouble, I know I have you by my side. You are my perfect partner-in-crime. You will not think twice before doing the craziest things with me. And that is why I love you so much. On this birthday, I wanted you to know that you are the most important part of my life.

30. My sweetheart,

It feels like just yesterday that we met, and now a whole decade has passed since our wedding. I’m truly amazed at how swiftly time flies! These years have taught me so much about you and life in general. You are the most patient and lovable person I have ever come across. You are capable of making my mood better with a kiss and a smile. I see your image in our children now. Happy anniversary, dear, and here’s to celebrating many more years together!

Your forever lover and wife.

31. My dearest,

Once again, it’s time to celebrate our bond and another year as husband and wife. Though we have been together for so long now, I feel your unending love for me even today. When you look at me with your liquid brown eyes, my knees go weak, and your gentle touch turns me to jelly. I am filled with gratitude for having you as a part of my life. Love you to the moon and back. Wishing you a joyful anniversary, my beloved!

Your wife, (Name)

32. Hello handsome,

As we complete another year of marriage, I am reminded of how our love has evolved. We have come a long way from being awkward teenagers who were too shy to talk to each other to becoming mature adults who openly share everything under the sky. It has been a long and fulfilling journey, and I thank you for walking hand-in-hand with me always. Wishing you a happy anniversary, my darling.

Your lovestruck wife.

33. Dear Husband-To-Be,

I have prayed over the years, asking God to bring me a man who put God first above all else. Now that I met you, I thank God for helping me meet you. The idea that you were made specifically for me by God and he made us meet each other as we were wandering on this planet is amazing. All I want is for you to keep believing what the LORD says so that our love will keep growing in Him. Since I know I’m not perfect, I will never expect you to be either. You will make mistakes, and so will I. But, I’m confident that we will get stronger over time by learning from our past mistakes. I promise to embrace every imperfection and flaw in you and keep loving you continually. Can’t wait to hear and say ‘I do’ a few hours from now!

Your bride who can’t wait to be your wife, (Name)

Appreciation Letters To Husband

Your husband will be the happiest when you say ‘I am proud to be your wife’. So, write a heartfelt appreciation letter to your husband and let him know about it. Your thoughtfulness will undoubtedly touch his heart.

34. My hero,

You proved that a man need not be handsome, rich or witty to keep a girl happy. All he needs to do is be faithful, and love her as no one has ever loved her before.

My life was a mess; I had no direction. You came in and brought stability, and showed me the right path. Thanks to you, now I have a successful career as well as a thriving personal life.

I always wondered how a single person can turn my whole life around. But you proved me wrong. You are such a positive person and can carry those vibes wherever you go. I am proud to be called your wife. Thank you my knight in shining armor for supporting me.

Your proud wife (name).

35. Dear name,

You are reserved, I am outgoing. You like sunrise, while I enjoy sunsets. They say opposites attract; I feel it is not entirely true. Initially, we might get attracted to each other because of our uniqueness, but what made us survive as a couple is our choice to love each other every single day.

Thank you for loving me unconditionally. I hope we spend many more fantastic years together embracing each other’s typical tastes and proudly be called as the odd couple out.

Your weird wife (name).

36. My Superman,

I want to write this letter to tell you how proud I am to be called your wife. Whenever people say I am lucky to have you as my husband, I agree with them without a second thought because you deserve all this. You are a phenomenal partner, who loves me and takes care of me. You never made me feel bad about myself, you always forgave all my mistakes and gave me a second chance to make things right.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you have done for me. You made my life nothing short of a fairy tale. And very few girls will be as lucky as I am.

Your loving wife (Name).

37. My incredible hubby,

All the superheroes in the movies pale in comparison to you. While cleaning the house, when you lifted the bed single-handedly yesterday, I lost my heart all over again to you. It is not just your physical strength that impresses me. The way you remain strong through all the ups and downs in life fills me with inspiration.

In awe of my superhero, Your awestruck wife.

38. My superhero,

You may not carry me, whiz around like Superman, or swing me around like Spiderman. But I know you would be there in a heartbeat and save me if I was in trouble. I am proud to be a spouse of a real-life superhero. Thank you for the endless times you have stood by me and provided immense support. Love you today and always.

Your daydreaming wife.

39. Dear husband,

There are so many things I love about you. The way you make the perfect cup of coffee every morning for me. The way you play with our children. The way you clean up after I cook. The way you take care of me when I am sick or low. The list is endless, and I could go on and on singing your praises and never get tired. You are the best, and I am blessed to be your wife. Love you, dear hubby.

Your loving wife, (Name).

40. My darling husband,

When I first met you, your passion and determination impressed me beyond everything else. Now, it has been so many years since we got married. Yet, your enthusiasm and dedication remain unchanged. I see you being firmly focused on your goals, inspiring me to do better in my life, too. I love you for being the driving force of our family.

Your focused wife.

41. My exceptional husband,

You manage everything so adeptly. You are an exceptional manager at work, and the finest husband a woman could hope for. You are a fabulous father to our children and a caring son, too. I am in awe of your ability to easily balance so many roles and never be fazed. I love you so much, my hero.

42. Hello, marvelous,

I have seen you fight all adversities in life and still stand firm. I was first attracted to this quality many years ago, and I am still drawn to you because of your magnetic personality. Your intellect and charm can captivate the hearts of everyone around you. I deeply cherish the fact that you chose me to be your partner.

Love you always and forever,

Your wife, (Name).

New curator of photography at San Diego museum hopes to ‘inspire a sense of discovery’

Growing up in New York City, in a family that cared about art, meant a life filled with museums, books, and movies for Kara Felt. It made sense that she would go on to earn degrees in art from Yale and New York University, carving out a professional path as a curator, lecturer, and writer on the topic.

“I had many formative experiences in cultural spaces, of leaving the museum, gallery, or theater looking at the world at a slightly different angle than before,” she says. “I knew since I was a teenager that I wanted to work in this direction, to fuel curiosity and inspire dialogue through art.”

Felt, 37, recently joined the San Diego Museum of Art as their curator of photography, overseeing the photography and new media collections at SDMA and the Museum of Photographic Arts. She previously worked as assistant curator of art at the Denver Botanic Gardens, organizing multiple exhibitions in a range of media, and as exhibition curator and postdoctoral curation fellow in the department of photographs at the National Gallery of Art. She lives in San Diego’s Bay Park neighborhood with her husband, Craig, and their three young children. She took some time to talk about her affinity for photography and working with living artists, her creative process for curating exhibitions, and getting to know San Diego.

Q: Congratulations on your position as the new curator of photography at the San Diego Museum of Art. Can you talk about your path to pursuing an education and career in the arts that led you to a focus on photography?

A: I wrote my first essay on a photograph when I was 15, but I fell in love with photography in college, when I took an art history class on American photography and a black-and-white photography class in the art department. Those experiences converted me — from the magic of seeing the photographic image materialize in the developing tray, to learning about all the stories that photographs can tell us about history, society, and culture. Photographs obviously have a special relationship to everyday life since we are all photographers and interact constantly with photos on our phones and in our environments, which raises fascinating philosophical questions about intention and quality.

Q: What are some lessons you learned about curating during your time at the Denver Botanic Gardens that you’re bringing with you to the San Diego Museum of Art?

A: I worked on photography shows at the Denver Botanic Gardens, but also on shows in a range of media, from botanical illustration to sculpture and installation art. I think it’s made me a more versatile curator to have that experience installing different kinds of artwork, since photography is most often two-dimensional and relatively small. My time there also offered an important lesson in working with different audiences, since many visitors to the gardens come because they love plants or simply as a respite from a busy day. It’s not always the same kind of visitor that you get at an art museum. I’ve learned how to make these diverse audiences feel included, welcome, and excited about the art on view.

What I love about Bay Park...

The views of the bay are very beautiful.

Q: How would you describe your approach to curating, in general? What elements are important to you to bring to curating exhibitions?

A: I think of myself as a facilitator creating experiences that are sensory and intellectual and that ask visitors to question their preconceptions and wrestle with new topics and perspectives. It’s very important to me to bring attention to underrepresented artists, especially women and artists of color, and to expand and diversify received canons of “important” photographers. I’m also drawn to overlooked topics and working across disciplines. My dissertation, for example, examined how religious beliefs motivated early photographers, which is an issue that has been barely addressed in the literature (Felt earned her Ph.D. from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University). Photography lends itself to interdisciplinary inquiry since it touches so many different aspects of our lives.

Q: Walk us through your process when you’re working on a curatorial project.

A: Generally, I see something that sparks an idea and then develop a sense of the state of the field on that theme or artist, from literature to past exhibitions. I then identify what is missing from the current conversation on a topic and try to articulate what new story can be told and why it is important. I’m always motivated by the question of relevance and how a particular subject bears on or potentially reframes critical issues today. From that big picture thinking, I shift to the concrete, thinking about how much and what kind of work would fit into a certain space to activate it and tell the story most effectively.

Q: Where have some of your ideas from past projects come from? What does the conceptualizing and research process look like?

A: I have a strong commitment to originality, whether that’s bringing a fresh perspective or a new lens onto well-covered subject matter, or developing new and compelling themes and working with artists from historically underrepresented groups. I’m often motivated by what I perceive to be gaps in representation or understanding, when something has been presented as simple, but is, in fact, full of complexity and nuance. The inspiration for an exhibition that I curated at the National Gallery of Art last year came from seeing a show featuring the work of two British photographers in Liverpool in 2015. I was amazed at the similarities and differences I saw with American photography of the time, which planted the seeds of an idea that I nurtured until I was invited to do research on the collection of British photography at the NGA in 2018. This morphed into an exhibition on artists using their cameras to respond to a time of intense social unrest in 1970s and 1980s Britain and featured many women, immigrants, and artists of color who often went unmentioned in the official accounts of the time, but made a huge impact on the photography scene. The research process usually involves learning as much as I can about a topic, devouring books and articles, digging through exhibition lists and periodicals, and speaking to experts in the field, especially artists.

Q: What are you thinking about, visually, when imagining how you’d like the exhibition to look? What you’d like viewers to see and feel as they make their way through an exhibition?

A: It really depends on the content of the exhibition, but if it is a historical show, I’ll often borrow from some of the aesthetics of the time in graphics, paint colors, and design.

Q: As an arts patron, who are some photographers whose work resonates with you, artistically?

A: I love it when photographs offer me a sense of proximity to an artist’s psyche; there’s something so intimate about seeing something very close to what the photographer saw looking through the lens in the past. Photographs can cut across time and culture and reveal so much about the artist’s very individual outlook. I’m especially drawn to photographers with a sense of humor about the social world, artists like Garry Winogrand and Tony Ray-Jones, and to those who picture aspects or members of society that often go unseen, such as Dawoud Bey or Chris Killip. I also really enjoy artists like Grete Stern or Toshiko Okanoue who use photographs to express interior or alternate states of being.

Q: What’s been rewarding about your work as a curator?

A: It’s really rewarding to help inspire a sense of discovery in people, whether that’s exposing them to a new artist they might not have known before, introducing a new perspective on a well-known artist, or simply connecting a visitor with a part of themselves — a curiosity, perhaps —that they didn’t know about.

Q: What has this work taught you about yourself?

A: This work has taught me that I really enjoy working with living artists and helping to materialize their visions in physical space. It’s often easier curating shows of work by artists who are no longer living, but it’s very rewarding to have a rich dialogue with an artist about their work as you’re organizing a show.

Q: What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

A: Someone taught me the value of taking compliments rather than deflecting them, and that’s really stuck with me and inspired me to share positive feedback with those around me. It’s a pity that so many nice sentiments go unsaid.

Q: What is one thing people would be surprised to find out about you?

A: I don’t own a camera beyond my iPhone.

Q: Please describe your ideal San Diego weekend.

A: I would say checking out a new playground or beach with our kids and eating fish tacos. I’ve only been here for a few weeks, but so far, I’ve been very impressed with the quality of the playgrounds.
