Handy Places to Find Content Writing Jobs. Makealivingwriting.com

Ask your network. Send cold-pitch emails. Make phone calls. Try direct mail. Connect with agencies. Marketing is the name of the game, especially when you’re starting out.

These are proven marketing strategies to find prospects and get hired for content writing jobs. The more prospects you reach out to, the closer you get to your goals to move up, earn more, and make a living writing.

Looking for another way to find freelance work?

It’s no secret that trolling Craigslist for content writing jobs or putting all your bets on Upwork to find great clients aren’t the best ways to build your freelance writing business .

But there are some online resources you’ll want to add to your toolbox.

If you want to get hired, grow your network, and build your portfolio of freelance work, check out these handy places to get hired online.

Finding your own clients to pitch freelance writing services will almost always win out over content mills, bidding sites, and job boards.

But there are some online resources worth checking out to help you:

  • Identify clients in your niche
  • See who’s hiring freelancers
  • Find out what type of content writing jobs are in demand
  • Fill a gap as a temporary writer until a full-time position is filled
  • Get hired for a freelance assignment or long-term contract

Tip: Don’t ignore listings for full-time writing jobs. Find a writing job in your niche that looks like a good fit, except for the 9-5 part? Reach out to the editor or marketing director with a letter of introduction. It’s a great way to land a temporary contract until they hire a full-time employee, which can take months at larger organizations.

Ready to check out the list of handy online resources to find freelance work?

Disclosure: Some of the links below are affiliate links, which means at no extra cost to you, we may earn a commission if you click through and make a purchase.

Want to know a little secret about the Junk Free Job Board inside the Freelance Writers Den? A few of the job listings come from FlexJobs. In fact, FlexJobs is one of our favorite freelance writing job boards . (Editor’s note: The Freelance Writers Den no longer includes a job board because so few jobs met our minimum requirements.)

It’s a paid service that complies thousands of online listings for freelance writing jobs and other remote work. (You’ll get 30% off with Code: FLEXLIFE , thanks to our special hookup with them.)

Tip: You can search the listings without handing over your email address or paying for the service. Use the Advanced Search feature , add a keyword from your niche, and choose a category like Writing, Marketing, or News & Journalism. If you want to see all the details, you’ll need a subscription.

When an editor or marketing director needs a writer, chances are pretty good they’re going to ask their “peeps” first. So how do you get on an editor’s radar?

That’s the foundation for CloudPeeps, created to match freelance writers with companies like Airbnb, Virgin America airlines, Lyft, Zappos, and many others.

Is it just another place that pays cheap rates for content writing jobs? You decide. Clients expect to pay freelancers $60 to $100 per hour or $100 to $250 per blog post.

The Freelance Writing job board gets a virtual fist bump for being an online resource for writers longer any others on this list. Since 1997, like when the Internet was still pretty new. Their staff compiles freelance writing jobs to keep the list going.

Companies can also use the site to find writers. Some of the most recent listings include jobs for blog writing, case studies, copywriting, and more.

Tip : Check the “Remote” box on the left when you search the list to filter out the full-time jobs. And be selective. You’ll find some writing opportunities here that pay professional rates. But others don’t…just a reminder that the best content writing jobs are usually the ones not advertised.

What’s it like to work for company X? If you want to get some insight about a potential freelance writing client, Glassdoor is a good place to look.

But it’s not just a place for employees to post glowing reviews or less-than-happy employees to dish out the dirt. Glassdoor is also a place where employers are looking for freelancers to write blog posts, articles, case studies, white papers, marketing-funnel content, and more.

Here’s an example: A basic search under the Jobs tab for “freelance writer” returned a list of about 1,300 writing jobs. Refine your search, and you’ll be able to sift though the list to find content writing jobs in your niche.

Indeed.com showed up on the Interwebs 14 years ago as a recruiting and job search tool. It didn’t take long for Indeed to outperform it’s competitor, Monster.com (which once paid $4 million for a series of Super Bowl ads).

At the time, most of those writing jobs were for the 9-to-5-sit-in-a-cubicle kind. But that’s changing in today’s freelance economy .

Tip: A quick search for “freelance writer” on Indeed turns up 700-plus content writing jobs for media companies, digital marketing agencies, and staffing services searching for the right freelancer to fill contract assignments.

Looking for assignments writing for newspapers, magazines, and media organizations?

That’s what you’ll primarily find at JournalismJobs, which was founded in 1998 by former Washington Post writer and editor Dan Rohn.

Tip 1 : When you search for freelance work here, use the “Job Type” tab on the left to narrow your search to “freelance” and “telecommute” opportunities.

Tip 2: Also, if you’re looking for an easy way to get a clip, pitch a local story idea to a newspaper in your community. Sad but true…most operate with a shoestring staff and work with freelancers.

If you’re going spend any time checking out these online resources to find content writing jobs, use LinkedIn.

As a freelance writer, it’s by far the best place online to network with people in your niche, connect with editors and marketing directors, and find freelance work.

Take the time to develop and improve your LinkedIn profile as a niche freelance writer. When you optimize your LinkedIn profile, you make it a lot easier for an editor or marketing director to find you. Plus, LinkedIn will recommend job searches based on your profile to save you time.

Before you jump into the search bar on Media Bistro, take a look at the Resources tab at the top of the page. You’ll find useful tips about how to pitch story ideas to a long list of niche, trade, and consumer magazines.

MediaBistro launched way back in 1999, and it’s carved out a niche as a place where companies can find media professionals. That’s good news for freelancers.

When you search for content writing jobs here, you’ll find publishing companies, digital marketing agencies representing Fortune 500 companies, and media outlets in need of your skills.

Tip:  Check the “Working from home” box to narrow your search to freelance or remote work.

When Darren Rowse stumbled upon this foreign concept called “blogging” back in 2002, he decided to start a blog to write about stuff like pop culture and spirituality. And he became obsessed with blogging, online writing and driving traffic.

That’s basically how ProBlogger started. The site includes a lot of resources for freelance writers and bloggers, including the ProBlogger job board.

Tip:  After sifting through the latest listings, there’s a mix of content writings jobs that pay respectable rates (like $300 per blog post on personal finance topics), and others that don’t.

Here’s a FlexJobs competitor. It works pretty much the same way.

At Virtual Vocations, real people sift through thousands of online jobs to create a searchable database where you can find remote work, including content writing jobs.

You can search for freelance work and see what’s out there for free, but you’ll need a paid subscription to see all the details.

“Our job board is 100 percent hand screened,” says Virtual Vocations Public Relations Director Michelle Rawlings. “Every opening we post gets human eyes on it, and is looked at again by our team in 30 days for review.”

Tip: Search by title like “freelance writer” or click on one of the categories like “Writing,” “Creative,” or “Marketing,” to see what’s available. Then use the “Telecommute” filter on the left to narrow your search.

If you want to build a successful freelance writing business, you’ll need to market like crazy…at least at first. Job boards can be one way to find potential clients. Just keep in mind that the best content writing jobs are usually the ones not advertised.

Where do you find content writing jobs online? Let’s discuss in the comments below.

If you’re one among them, don’t worry, Upwork is one of the best freelance websites for writers. Not only for writers, it can also be used by designers, marketers and everyone else who are looking for freelance work.

Upwork

Upwork formerly Elance is a popular online freelance platform that’s used by millions of people worldwide.

How to get started as a freelancer on Upwork?

Step 1: Click here to sign up for Upwork as a freelancer for free.

Step 2: Start picking the topics that you’re interested in. But before that make sure to fill your profile with your name, description, experience, photo etc. This makes it easy for you to find clients quickly.

If you’re someone who wants to start using Upwork as a freelance writer, here are some quick tips for you.

1. Always make sure to ensure that the clients’ payment methods are verified. You’ll see a “verified payment” tick for every client.

2. If you’re starting out, make sure to use Upwork’s desktop app and work diary that tracks your time and takes snapshots of your screen to avoid any conflict at payment stage. This is a must if you want to avoid headaches later.

How much does Upwork charge for freelancers?

Freelancers pay a service fee of 5% to 20% based on their lifetime billings with a specific client. Here’s the breakdown of how Upwork charges for those who are doing freelancing on their platform.

  • You pay 20% for the first $500 billed with the client across all contracts
  • 10% for total billings between $500.01 and $10,000
  • And when total billings with the client exceed $10,000, a 5% fee is charged

Yes, 20% is a lot of service fee but mind you, it eliminates a lot of competition by giving you a great edge of getting high paying clients.

Getting the first client on Upwork is a tough job, but once you get your first gig, the road onward will be straight and smooth. This resource will be a great help to land your first content writing freelance job on this platform

The great thing about using Textbroker is, it pays you for your articles as soon as the client accepts them. You can request a weekly payoff as soon as you’ve earned $10 or more.

Unlike other freelance websites, TextBroker has fixed pricing for various ratings (ranging from 1 to 5) which you can find on their site. Apart from that, you’ll have to pay a nominal 0.35% as a service fee for every dollar you make. That means you pay $3.5 to TextBroker if you get a client to pay you $100. It’s as simple as that.

Mostly they tell you to fill a form to submit your details (such as showing your previous work and discussing what you would like to get paid for the project).

I have applied my 10 years of blogging experience to conclude the top 11 websites for freelance content writers. So explore the above-mentioned sites, I am pretty much sure you will get the work you have been looking for.

Though this is the well-researched list of freelance content writing websites, for a beginner, I would highly recommend you to start with Fiverr.

For me, the best practice is to check out the top 10 links on Google and then come up with the best version of content covering all the aspects in the best way.

In most cases, you will be paid per word via a suitable payment channel like PayPal.

Though it all depends on your capabilities and the pace you can write at. Still, if you are a beginner you can earn around INR 9000 – 1000. And if you’re an experienced freelance writer you can earn from INR 20000 to 30000.

Most of the websites I mentioned above work in both ways. You can either sign up as a freelancer or employer. So simply create an account as an employer and start finding a content writer for you.

Kick start a writing career in style.Even if you are an established professional, there is a lot yet to be explored with these best freelance websites for writers. Get in and see which of these works for you!

Fortunate you are if you have found some good and professional clients at the beginning of your writing career because that anyways leads to a constant flow of work and assured income. This is something that is bit challenging for many newbie writers or those who are yet at the entry level. Nobody starts a business to fail and so it is with freelance writing. Therefore, it makes sense ending up with high paying clients, consistent assignments and projects that improve you as a writer.

Which is your primary and favorite place to outsource content writing.

and How much it cost for 2000k words.

finally how you optimize it..

I started my blogging career as a content writer on freelancer.

Indeed, a well-researched list of some of the amazing websites that help freelancers to get work and paid well.

Thanks Amit Garg

Thank you, thank you so much. This is detailed blog – actually I was looking for this as I have started doing full time freelancing and it’s been so tedious and tempting altogether to search for everything related to content writing services in freelancing (remote). Recently, someone suggested me Upwork and Freelancer but that’s not it – I needed to find few more sites too – just to compare and know the difference between these all. Wow, article. Have been in my bookmark now. 🙂

These websites are extremely competitive and it would be difficult for writers in their initial phases to earn money consistently. A good place to start would be websites like

1) Content-Kart.com 2) Constant-content.com 3) godotmedia.com

Maybe you should add a section for websites that are not very competitive

Hi Shilpa, glad you added few websites to the list, I’ll definitely check them out and if they are really useful for our audience, I’ll consider adding them in the future. Again, thanks for listing out!

These are the top sites which are flooded by all kinds of freelancers from around the globe and their popularity means nothing if you can’t earn. I`d rather advice new low competitive freelancing platform for beginners. Beesy.pro and Craigslist are totally free, partimerz has a symbolic charge and all of them are good if you want to work, not only search for it.

Thanks for sharing these great list of freelance sites. I am a big fan of upwork and found it very easy to manage and start making money from it. Textbroker is also a good site to look out for some content writing projects.

Hi Mahendra, glad to know that you’re already using few of the sites listed above for freelancing work. Remember one thing while the above mentioned sites, just because a skill has a higher demand or pays well than the others doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best path to follow because there are so many people who are offering $5 services, so you need to really hone your skills to be able to find high paying clients.

Great websites for freelance work!

I like upwork and fiverr. I like all of them, to be honest. You can always find new clients anywhere.

The key is presenting yourself and your portfolio in a professional way. You also have to be quick witted and also work to become a smart marketer to sell your services.

Thanks for sharing this list man!

Hi Freddy, glad to see you around here, one thing I like about most freelancing sites mentioned above is that, they all provide you a ton of customers list that you can use to quickly make money by offering your services. Upwork is definitely a great source for freelancers to find great customers and yes as you said, you need to work smarter if you want to find high paying gigs. Thanks for stopping by.

Hello Anil, Thanks for sharing these great list of freelance sites. I am a big fan of upwork and found it very easy to manage and start making money from it. Textbroker is also a good site to look out for some content writing projects. Thanks for sharing these great tools.

Yes agree that Upwork is a top notch site for freelancers and way better than most of the other platforms such as Fiverr where there’s just too much noise. The good thing about using Upwork is that you can choose the Free or Pro Membership options, depending on how often you plan on using the website. Free is upto 60 “Connects”/month, currency you pay to submit proposals to potential clients. For $10, Pro is 70 “Connects” and you get a personalized url, as well as some average insight into how much people are offering to charge on each job, so you can use those plans smartly to make more money through upwork.

Great Post! Thank you for compiling this. You can add Text-Writers as good source of earning for writers. It is an online platform that bring freelancers writers and business under one roof.

I haven’t yet heard about and thank you for the suggestion, I’ll definitely have a look at it and if it sounds like a great deal for freelancers of all kinds, I’ll definitely include it to the list. Thanks for stopping by and let me know if you’ve any more suggestions.

I am a career coach. Recently I worked with a few clients who were looking for mid life career change. After six to eight month effort, they established themselves as a freelancer in content writing, drawing categories. I found Fiverr.com is the best way to establish as freelancers.

Hey Alta, Fiverr is a great place if you know how to approach clients with your gigs and if you’re just starting out, you can find thousands of customers who are interested in your services as Fiverr is one of the biggest online platforms where people find cheap services. That being said, it usually don’t provide you much profits when compared to other sites like UpWork. You can also check out the remaining site mentioned above for finding the freedom to work when you want, from where you want. All the best.

8 Tips for Landing Remote Content Writer Jobs

I magine a job where you can set your own schedule, work from where you want, and modify your workload as needed. Becoming a freelance writer is one of the best ways to make this dream a reality. More and more people are looking for remote jobs, especially since people now strive to stay out of the office .

There are plenty of remote content writer jobs out there, but not everybody understands how to maximize their chances of landing one. We’ve created a brief guide that can put you on the right track toward growing your career as a professional writer. Let’s explore the key information you should know.

1. Leverage Your Contacts

When diving into the freelance lifestyle, there’s a chance one of your personal contacts can provide info on available jobs. They might have a friend who owns a business, for example. In some cases, someone you know could use your services.

It doesn’t hurt to ask, so keep this opportunity in mind when moving forward. A simple question could drastically change your life.

2. Focus on Your Niche

When marketing yourself as a writer, it’s important to focus on your niche. This could include multiple categories depending on your areas of expertise.

For instance, you can focus on finance, tech, and business content. Be honest with yourself about your level of knowledge in different topics. If you don’t feel confident that you can deliver top-tier content, hold off on that particular area.

The last thing you want is to damage client relationships early in your writing career. Getting started is the hardest part, and it’s essential to do what you can to build your clientele.

3. Do Your Research

Finding the best freelance writing opportunities involves abundant research. You should decide whether you want to write directly for clients or use an existing platform.

In the early stages of your career, finding clients can be difficult. This is especially true if you don’t have previous experience as a professional writer.

When looking for content writing services, check what other writers have to say. Are they generally satisfied with how the platform operates?

How much do they tend to make? A notable platform is iWriter, which simplifies the onboarding process and lets writers get started ASAP.

So, how does iWriter work ? This page has plenty of useful information. As long as you do your due diligence, you shouldn’t have issues making the right decision.

4. Set Yourself Apart

There’s no shortage of writers looking to do exactly what you’re doing, and standing out from your competition is crucial when pursuing writing opportunities.

Assess what makes you unique as a professional and emphasize it. For instance, you might be someone who’s often near their computer and works efficiently.

You could advertise that you have short production times and are easy to get in touch with. A great way to provide insight into what clients can expect is to create a website for yourself.

Be sure to keep things brief, though. People looking for writers often spend only a few minutes at most browsing different options.

5. Craft a Killer Portfolio

Having the right portfolio will dictate how quickly you find the type of work you desire. If you haven’t completed professional projects in the past, you can still put your own work on your site.

However, you should only showcase work that aligns with the type of projects you want to handle. For instance, you might be interested in writing web content for small businesses. Having a few high-quality examples of what you’re capable of will help you find clients.

6. Constantly Expand Your Knowledge

The more you learn about the freelance industry, the greater your chances of success. There are many nuances associated with freelance writing that transcend the writing itself. For instance, you’ll need to pay taxes as a small business owner instead of an employee.

This is true even if you use a content writing platform, as you’re technically an independent contractor. Independent contractors can’t be told how or when to work, but they pay extra taxes. Stay aware of this obligation so you don’t run into financial issues in the future.

The last thing you want is to get a tax bill you can’t afford. It’s not a bad idea to hire an accountant as your income grows. Not only can they help you manage your finances, but they can help you save money through tax exemptions and write-offs

7. Look For a Mentor

It’s never a bad idea to look for a mentor who has experience in freelance writing. This can be one of the most valuable resources you encounter if leveraged appropriately. High-quality mentors will be easy to communicate with and enthusiastic about helping you.

Keep in mind they may need your assistance on personal projects in exchange for the insight they provide. Don’t be afraid to spend a few hours per week helping them out so you can learn key information about freelance writing.

If you can’t find a mentor, don’t worry. It’s not a necessity.

As your expertise increases, you may have the opportunity to serve as a mentor for others. This can be an incredibly rewarding experience that also teaches you more about your profession.

8. Don’t Give up

It can be discouraging to get ghosted by potential clients or have trouble finding work. If you give up, though, you’re guaranteed to fail.

Even if your situation seems bleak, keep pushing forward. The more you market yourself, the better chance you have of developing client relationships.

The more work you complete, the better you’ll get at your craft. Over time, everything will fall into place, and you’ll build the lifestyle you’ve been dreaming of.

Don’t Overlook Remote Content Writer Jobs

While remote content writer jobs require accountability and diligence, they can transform your life if handled correctly. The tips in this guide will ensure you hit the ground running and give yourself the best chance of landing the position you need.

Final report writer- tactical.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Internews is seeking a qualified consultant to research and develop a final report for Internews’ Journalist Security Fellowship (JSF) project (also known internally as TACTICAL), during June to July 2024. The evaluation will be conducted fully remotely/online.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Journalists and independent media outlets based in Southeastern and Central Europe work in challenging environments characterized by media ownership concentration, job insecurity, and hostility from state and non-state actors in the form of digital targeting and espionage. Many of these journalists, particularly freelancers, do not have support to address such threats, and as a result, are often ill- equipped to respond to increasingly complex online attacks. Internews launched an initiative designed to support local journalists (with a focus on freelance journalists) and small independent media outlets in Southeastern and Central Europe (specifically Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia) by helping them prevent, mitigate, and respond to online attacks by combining proven digital safety training methods with state-of-the-art, innovative scenario-based trainings (include virtual reality, tabletop exercises, and technical simulation). Visit our website to learn more about the Journalist Security Fellowship.

Internews has offices in Arcata, CA, Washington, DC and London, UK. Ultimately this is a remote-based role and candidates based anywhere in the world will be considered. However, there are some locations where Internews does not support remote work.
