HMM Review: Christmas Bedtime Stories

christmas bedtime stories movie review

Image via: https://www.hallmarkmoviesandmysteries.com/christmas-bedtime-stories

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Where did the magic come from?! I didn’t know this movie had a bit of Christmas magic! I thought it was just a Mom reading her daughter bedtime stories. I’m so glad it was much more than that! Here’s a quick recap and my two cents 😉

Quick Recap

Danielle’s marine husband, Colby, died while deployed. They never found his body. Danielle and her daughter moved on with their lives. Eventually Danielle’s daughter starts asking questions about her father. Danielle tells her stories about her father at bedtime and the stories start coming true. At the same time, Danielle accepts her boyfriend’s proposal and begins to question if there’s a higher reason for these miracles and if Colby could still be alive.

My Two Cents

Why is it always the movies I’m not looking forward to that keep me captivated from the first moment?! This was a bracket movie that I wouldn’t have watched if it wasn’t in my Hallmark Christmas Movie Bracket, because I usually don’t seek out military movies. They usually make me cry.

This one wasn’t any different. I found myself on the edge of tears every ten minutes. It’s so hard watching a movie where the husband dies and leaves behind a wife and child. Especially when the child is young and doesn’t remember her Dad.

But this movie is magic. I loved how Danielle’s stories kept coming real. Running into old friends, finding missing ornaments, freak snow storms, and more. I LOVE movies with this kind of magic! Somehow, it kept it just light enough that I didn’t cry the entire time.

But I wanted to cry every time I saw Danielle hurt poor Pierce’s feelings. I wondered how long he would last before he ended things with her or she finally figured out what she really wanted and stopped hurting him. I was glad when things worked out the way they did.

**SPOILER ALERT**

I almost died the last 5 minutes of the movie. Have your tissues ready! Colby’s reappearance gives the perfect Hallmark movie ending, but dang did it hit me right in the feels. I really really wanted this ending and I’m so happy Hallmark ended it this way! Is it realistic? Absolutely not, but that’s not why I watch Hallmark. I watch it to see the happily ever after that doesn’t always happen in the real world.

**END OF SPOILERS**

Hallmark Movies and Mysteries movies always hits me right in the feels. I swear I wind up ugly crying on 75% of these movies. I’m super glad I watched this movie tonight. Military movies are always hard for me to watch, but this was definitely worth it! Give it a try!

This movie had lots of potential…but, they really dropped the ball for the ending. So many loopholes….

This exactly! I wanted him to come home but the way it happened is just not realistic… even for a Hallmark movie. There is no way the General wouldn’t have known.

Agree! Very unrealistic ending. It was like they just ran out of time and threw in an ending. VERY disappointing. (My response to Perfect Harmony was totally opposite; it is the best HMM I’ve seen perhaps ever!)

I agree. There was not enough background. They should have shown Colby’s trip home, and then the reunion-not just a “Here I am! Surprise!!!” And there was no ending for Pierce. Does his Christmas end happily? Or does he pine for his lost love for the rest of his life? No, Hallmark. You dropped the ball here.

Agree! Not very well informed about military procedures, but this seems highly unlikely. I think the writers bungled the story line with Pierce, too. This character deserved a better resolution to his story.

he doesnt call? the military doesnt know anything? he knows where to go/where his family will be? no one makes a fuss about a “dead” guy returning? his daughter doesnt ask questions?

Terrible ending!!

Only thing was he announced himself as a major in the scene they met at the Christmas tree lighting but when they got married he wore a captain’s uniform. Unless I was paying half attention.

Exactly why I searched this! When he announced “Major” I thought, oh, a little older. Then when they got married I was like, how did they get THAT wrong? Also read the spoiler alert. Not sure I can finish the movie – my husband didn’t come home.

Terrible and unrealistic. Will totally impede healing for families of those MIA.

I could not believe that they would end the movie like that. Very lazy on the part of the writers. Talk about Deus ex Machina.

Exactly- I wanted it to be a sign she should move on. Pierce was lovely and deserved his happy ending. Totally ruined it for me. So unrealistic.

Totally agree with your comment. Writers were sloppy and failed to do much research into military protocols.

I would rather the husband had actually died and was sending her signals that it was ok to move on. And how he got back looking none for the worse, despite being a prisoner? They could have at least had him on crutches, with some scars or something.

Thank you very much. I share your exact same sentiments. I consider the movie a waste of my precious time!

It was the ending I expected, but it all happened so abruptly and so much was missing. Colby just showing up like that was weird and what about poor Pierce? I mean it was a great storyline, until it wasn’t. Maybe if it hadn’t been so abrupt they could have worked in a little reunion with him as well. Could have been a beautiful story, but it just didn’t flow nicely. “Swing and a miss”

Very bad and possibly harmful message for wives of MIAs or soldiers declared dead but no body recovered. An insult to the military and POWs.

So dissapointing and I wonder who at HMM would have approved that concept. It is so disappointing, almost cruel, to military families and especially to children who might find that a plausible happening at Christmas. It was so unrealistic and almost maddening. It actually leaves me less willing to watch other HMM movies.

I just finished watching this movie and towards the end, when Danielle (Cahill) was in the bathroom, I said out loud to myself, if the husband shows up Im done watching Hallmark Movies! Disappointed that I can no longer watch Hallmark Christmas Movies….maybe. Seriously, all those years without a phone call, letter, video conference?!! Unrealistic. What happened to her fiance?! Why were the other people at the dance not more excited or surprised that he showed up, did no one else know he was missing? I kept waiting for her to all of a sudden wake up and realize it was a dream and he came to her to let her know it was ok to move on. That, I think would have been a better ending.

I absolutely hated this movie, I agree that it should have been signs to move on. That is the type of message I want to take out of my Christmas movies not half baked insults like this. I defend myself daily as an unabashed hallmark fan but this one drives me away.

I thought the end was ridiculous. Like others, I was hoping it was signs for her to move on. Him showing up, showered and in uniform, totally unannounced was almost comical. There was so much potential to the first 2/3 of this movie and then it just flopped.

What about Star ? Star was part of the family too. When Danielle took her walk Star should have been with her. Also Star should have been at the end too. Poor writing ….and I agree with the above comments!

This was insults to all the men and women all these yrs serving our country. He loved better even after being a prisoner for 3 yrs. Totally unrealistic. Beside he would be delayed for days with paperwork and being questioned by the brass.

Worst Hallmark movie

great movie.........and not to far off from reality for many people. emotions, and feelings. the ending was rushed that was my only issue.

Worst Hallmark movie ever! I didn't see any chemistry, Colby's commanding officer - 3 minutes earlier when asked, didn't know he was coming home? Just BAD - I expect so much more from Hallmark!

I agree with the writer of this article! Hallmark has gone, woke and gotten away from God and the ending was very cheesy and unrealistic! Your points are very valid! I’ve been enjoying great American family channel and up channel where they are not afraid to mention faith or God! Thank you for your views, and so eloquently putting them into words!

The Christmas Bedtime Stories movie aired on Hallmark Movies and Mysteries on October 29, 2022. Are the bedtime stories a mother tells her daughter magical? Is her late husband trying to send her messages? Here’s the rundown and review for this movie.

Christmas Bedtime Stories Movie

Synopsis of Christmas Bedtime Stories Movie

For many of us, Christmas can be a time of mixed emotions. The joy and excitement of being with family for a holiday. But it can also be a sad reminder of the loved ones who aren’t with us. Those are the mixed emotions facing Danielle (Erin Cahill) and her daughter Audrey (Alice Comer).

Audrey is about to celebrate her 8th birthday, bringing up many questions about her Dad. Her Dad, Colby (Charlie Weber), was a soldier who was presumed dead after his entire squad was killed in action. Since Audrey was only 5 when her Dad died, she’s had difficulty remembering him and has started asking her Mum lots of questions about him.

Instead of reading a bedtime story to Audrey, Danielle starts telling her stories about her Dad. Each night Audrey asks a new question, and Danielle answers the question by taking us back to that part of her life. We see flashbacks of the day she met Colby, the day Audrey was born. And, the last time she spoke with Colby.

But something strange starts to happen as Danielle opens up. Each time she tells a bedtime story, the next day, some part of that story pops up in her real life, like the rare snowstorm that fell on Virginia the day that Audrey was born. The day after sharing that story, Virginia was hit with another storm. Or how about the missing Christmas tree ornament that Colby gave them. It magically appears the day after Danielle shares the story of how Colby gave that to her, attached to the collar of their new puppy.

What is it that’s causing these events to occur? Is it Danielle’s hope that her husband is still out there, or maybe it’s her reluctance to move on and marry Pierce (Steve Lund)? Danielle has feelings for Pierce, but is it love, and is she ready to move on?

Christmas Bedtime Stories Cast

Review of Christmas Bedtime Stories Movie

I’m having a hard time putting my finger on this movie. On the one hand, I liked it more than I thought I would. The preview of the movie made it seem sad and depressing. Maybe it’s because I’m a widow myself, and I worried that the subject would hit too close to home. Whatever it is, I’m glad that the Christmas Bedtime Stories movie was more optimistic than I expected. But that doesn’t mean that I liked it.

This movie is OK. In my ranking of the Best Hallmark Christmas movies for 2022 , this one will be in the middle of the pack. Not the worst of the bunch, but certainly not at the top. With all of the talent in this movie, it was surprisingly void of emotion. I never really felt that Danielle and Pierce were a couple, so it was hard to get behind that relationship and be interested in what happened to them.

Recap of the Christmas Bedtime Stories Movie

I haven’t shared the whole story behind the Christmas Bedtime Stories movie, so if you’re interested in learning more, you’ll have to tune into Hallmark Movies & Mysteries to watch it. While I wouldn’t rush out to watch this one, I don’t think you’ll be too upset if you spend an evening watching this movie while you multitask and do something else simultaneously.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

First off, I hate military propaganda in MY Christmas movies, but I set that aside for the most part because this movie seemed to actually have some heart for most of the runtime.

But then the twist hit and fuuuuuuckkkkk yooooouuuuu!

POW man just appears at the father-daughter dance looking like he hasn't missed a single fucking meal during his three years of captivity? Dude weighs more than me and I've been eatin' good in the neighborhood.

I'm no military expert, but I'm pretty sure when POWs get freed after years of captivity the government doesn't keep it a secret so some random dude can surprise his family at Christmas.

Like, the wife didn't get a fucking phone call?

I feel like this movie was created for a specific kind of person, and that’s someone I will never be. The ending is absolutely ridiculous. While it may bring comfort to someone experiencing loss, it makes a much stronger story to have Erin Cahill finally learn to move on.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen one of these movies that’s more thoroughly ruined by the ending like this one. This could have been a beautiful story of a widow finding love and learning to move past trauma, and the ending completely undermines everything. Weird choice! Bad choice!

Caleb

it was an okay Christmas movie about remembering lost loved ones up until the final act which contains a truly idiotic twist that makes zero sense. everyone involved should be banned from making movies ever again.

Christmas Bedtime Stories- why spend the whole movie getting us invested in one relationship only to have it end in another? That’s not good storytelling. I like all the pieces in this but justice for Pierce!

I really wanted to love this movie and I actually enjoyed most of it but the ending left such a bad taste in my mouth and I really don't understand why the movie ended the way it did. The cast is wonderful and all the leads had nice chemistry. The magical elements were a nice surprise and I loved all the flashbacks and stories but spoilers. Colby the husband missing for 3 years comes back at the end which should have been an emotional moment but it just didn't work for me, why hasn't he tried calling them, where the hell has he been, it just didn't make any sense to me and why would they make the movie this way when it so easily could have been a beautiful movie about moving on. I still thought the movie was fine but I was disappointed.

This ending is actually insane. I thought nothing could be worse than Cozy Christmas Inn but I was so wrong.

Also I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Hallmark literally never fact checks anything in their military propaganda movies. Dude went from being a major to wearing a captain uniform? Like did he lower ranks?? The general having long hair over his ears in the literal Marines hahah. We died at his unit just being “Marine Recon” 💀 Spent 3 years in a POW camp in and looks… unchanged??

Solid chance the original husband(marine with a death wish), committed war crimes.

A little over 3,000 troops were killed in action over the past 15 years. Why do we need these movies every year? Some of them are fine, but when one of these comes around it's a reminder that we don't have to do this on a yearly basis.

I am giving this 3 stars.  One for Erin Cahill   One for Steve Lund One for Charlie Weber

I loved the acting, but the way they wrapped up the story, stripped it of all of its integrity.

I was looking forward to this movie but it wasn’t what I expected it to be. I was hoping for a well-written story about honoring the love of your past and embracing your future after loss. The ending was very far fetched and makes you wonder why Steve Lund and his talent were in this movie? So he could be the stand-in fiancé for two hours and then dumped right before his friend comes back from the dead? Hey, friend-while you were gone for three years, oh yea, I was with your wife? The way it was written took away from the love story with her missing husband and made you feel bad for Lund’s character dealing with on and…

Preview: “Christmas Bedtime Stories” A Hallmark Movies & Mysteries 2022 “Miracles Of Christmas” Movie

Kat Harlton

Media: Hallmark Media

Erin Cahill (“Every Time a Bell Rings,” “A Timeless Christmas”), Steve Lund (“A Mrs. Miracle Christmas,” “Schitt’s Creek”), Charlie Weber (“How to Get Away with Murder,” “As They Made Us”) star in “ Christmas Bedtime Stories ” a new original premiering Saturday, October 29 (9 p.m. ET/PT), on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries as part of the network’s annual “Miracles of Christmas” programming event.

About The Movie :

Danielle (Cahill) was left to raise her daughter Audrey (Alice Comer, “Open by Christmas”) when her husband, Colby (Weber), goes MIA and is presumed dead during a military deployment overseas. Three years later, she has made great progress with moving on and has recently become engaged to an old friend, Pierce Baker (Lund). Audrey begins to ask questions about her dad when she learns of an upcoming father-daughter dance at school and she is feeling out of place. Danielle begins to tell Audrey bedtime stories of her father, which becomes a ritual; Audrey is rapt each night and through her mother’s memories is able to envision her father as a flesh-and-blood hero. As Danielle tells Audrey these stories, she starts to see signs that leave her feeling unsettled about Colby. On Christmas Eve, Danielle and Audrey go to the dance together, all while Danielle continues to question why her love for Pierce doesn’t feel the same as her love for Colby – if only there was a sign.

“Christmas Bedtime Stories” is from Bedtime Stories Productions Ltd. Nancy Grace and Josh Sabarra are executive producers. The movie is produced by Vicki Sotheran and Greg Malcolm. Alysee Leite-Rogers directed from a script by Andrea Canning. Based on a story by Nancy Grace & Josh Sabarra.

"Bedtime Stories" is not my cup of tea. Even the saucer. Fairness requires me to report, however, that it may appeal to, as they say, "kids of all ages." I am not a kid of any age and do not qualify, but this is a harmless and pleasant Disney comedy and one of only three family movies playing over the holidays. It will therefore win the box-office crown big time, with Adam Sandler crushing Tom Cruise , Brad Pitt , Cate Blanchett , Mickey Rourke , Samuel L. Jackson , Kate Winslet and others not in harmless Disney comedies. " The Tale of Despereaux " and "Marley & Me" also qualify as family films, although some parents may be frightened by Marley the dog.

Sandler plays a hotel handyman named Skeeter, which is a name even more unwise than Hussein if you want your child to run for president. His dear old dad ran a family motel at the corner of Sunset and La Cienega, an unlikely story, and was bought out by Nottingham the hotel tycoon ( Richard Griffiths ), who erected a towering heap of rooms on the site and put Skeeter in charge of changing the light bulbs. Now Skeeter is also in charge of the overnight maintenance work and his niece and nephew while his sister ( Courteney Cox ) looks for work in Arizona.

The kids ( Laura Ann Kesling and Jonathan Morgan Heit ) want to be told bedtime stories, and Skeeter spins some terrific ones -- so terrific, the movie's budget seems to be the best-kept secret this season. Literally hundreds of special-effects technicians labored to visualize Skeeter's fantasies, which involve a zero-gravity battle in outer space, a cowboy with a bright red horse, a medieval king, a gladiator and so on. The kids start providing their own output, the stories have a weird way of coming true in real life, Skeeter tries to slant them to affect future events, and as you know from the film's poster, gumballs rain from above.

Intercut with this folderol are (a) Skeeter's rivalry with Nottingham's evil hotel manager ( Guy Pearce ) for the hand of Nottingham's daughter ( Teresa Palmer ), (b) an attempt to save an eco-friendly school run by his sister's best friend ( Keri Russell ), and (c) reaction shots by Bugsy, the kids' pet guinea pig, whose hyperthyroid eyes the size of half dollars are not cute. Sort of sad, really. Almost scary.

There are some nice sight gags. One involves a misunderstanding about fire-retardant spray. Another involves Skeeter being bitten on the tongue by a bee. He cannot utter one intelligible word during a crucial presentation to Nottingham and is funny in his desperate attempts. His scruffy friend Mickey ( Russell Brand ) leaps to the rescue and translates. Mickey is also an employee at the hotel, although anyone looking like him would be barred from any prudent hotel and might excite the curiosity of city health inspectors.

And that's about it. The first PG family comedy starring Adam Sandler. Just what you're looking for. Sandler reprises once again his clueless, well-meaning nebbish who wants to be liked. Once again the character relates best to kids, perhaps because there is so much he can learn from them. Once again, the message is that you have to believe. Apparently it doesn't matter so much what you believe. Just the act of believing is sufficient. Then you can believe you want to see the sequel.

Note: The film's Chicago publicist, a really nice guy, announced that any movie critic attending the critics' screening in pajamas would be presented with free popcorn and a soft drink. How could he have known that the 7:30 p.m, screening would take place during a snowstorm on the coldest night of this winter? One of the critics nevertheless wore his PJs and cashed in. It must be true, what they're saying about salaries in hard times.

  2. Christmas Bedtime Stories (TV Movie 2022)

All week I'd been waiting for this movie for two reasons. 1 - I've come to expect that network showing it, HMM, has Christmas movies that are not just romance, but some of the best Christmas movies I love because the stories are heartwarming. 2 - Erin Cahill is one of my all-time favorite actors in this genre. Real spoilers ahead.

  3. HMM Review: Christmas Bedtime Stories

This one wasn't any different. I found myself on the edge of tears every ten minutes. It's so hard watching a movie where the husband dies and leaves behind a wife and child. Especially when the child is young and doesn't remember her Dad. But this movie is magic. I loved how Danielle's stories kept coming real.

  4. Christmas Bedtime Stories Plot Summary

Christmas Bedtime Stories is a tear-jerker. Colby Aames was the love of Danielle's life. The two met on the military base when Danielle hopped on stage to tell corny jokes while Colby fixed the electrical issue preventing the tree from lighting during the annual ceremony. The two hit it off and were married the following Christmas.

  6. Christmas Bedtime Stories Movie Review: Hallmark (2022)

The preview of the movie made it seem sad and depressing. Maybe it's because I'm a widow myself, and I worried that the subject would hit too close to home. Whatever it is, I'm glad that the Christmas Bedtime Stories movie was more optimistic than I expected. But that doesn't mean that I liked it. This movie is OK.

I want my two hours back. If the writers wanted the husband alive the entire premise of the movie should have been different.
