What is a Case Study?
A case study is an account of an activity, event, or problem that contains a real or hypothetical situation and includes complexities you would encounter in the workplace. Case studies are used to help you see how the complexities of real life influence decisions.
This may take the form of a historical case study which analyzes the causes and consequences of a situation and discusses the lessons learned.
Other types of case studies imagine or role play to make plausible recommendations to senior management. Some case studies attempt to solve a problem by developing a new design. These types of case studies are problem-oriented .
Why use a Case Study?
Case studies expose you to real-life examples of situations that you may deal with, or not otherwise experience – if you come across something only once in your career, you’re learning on the fly. Case studies allow you to:
- Explore the nature of a problem and circumstances that affect a solution
- Learn about others' viewpoints and how they may be taken into account
- Define your priorities and make your own decisions to solve a similar problem
- Predict outcomes and consequences
If you’ve seen something similar in a case study, you’ve got something to look back on. Case studies also let you lay out all the information from hindsight , including the stuff that might not be obvious in the moment, but is there if you know to look for it and ask the right questions. You can put yourself in the shoes of the various decision makers and consider what blind spots you might have in a similar situation.
They can also promote creative thought . Some readers may have a similar situation but have never considered the solution that worked in the case study. Other readers may find that the ultimate solution in the case study won't work for them, but the trial and error solutions discarded in the case study may provide guidance about a path that will work. Finding out what other people did isn't just a "how to" to fix something. It's a "how to" in ways to address a problem .
Case studies demonstrate the complexity and messiness of real situations , and the reality that any decision to be made has to be made with incomplete information.
In other words: They are NOT clean sanitized homework problems or simple examples that have a single easy answer. They are real situations with real ethical dilemmas that may or may not have been dealt with properly in the past. They provide you (the students) to delve into the nasty, twisted, complicated reality of ethical dilemmas and hopefully come out with a healthy respect that decision makers in ethical situations don't always have a quick simple answer but are caught in a dilemma and they try to do the best they can in spite of the situation. You can not get this experience any other way short of placing you into an actual ethical dilemma, which ironically would be unethical for us to do to you.
How to Find a Case Study
1. Experiment with searching "case study"
Don't rely on searching just for "case studies," but sometimes it can be a good way to narrow down your results. While some writers and researchers will include the actual phrase "case study" in the title of their report, many don't! Some databases have a filter for Case Studies (just like some have filters for peer-reviewed journal articles, full text, or date range), so look around to see if there's a check box to limit your search that way.
2. Combine different articles
If you're looking for something really niche or specific, you may have to read several articles and then take what you learn from each and merge them together. For example, look for articles on construction of your particular situation, look for synonyms, and do some more searches to get enough information.
3. Try different databases
Different databases have different content from magazines, journals, etc. So if you're not finding what you need in one of them, don't just spin your wheels! Try another one. Check out the list of engineering and interdisciplinary databases below.
4. Try journals directly
If you skip a database and head straight to a relevant journal, you might be able to find information more quickly. That's because journals are typically about a very specific topic.
- Though discontinued in 2018, this open access journal contains case studies regarding engineering failures.
- Case Studies in Construction Materials
- Case Studies in Thermal Engineering
- Case Studies in Chemical and Environmental Engineering
- Published by the National Academy of Engineering, this journal often features articles dealing with the responsible practice of engineering and current case studies.
5. Try some more resources outside of Cline Library
Consider searching the internet for companies that have been involved in actual projects to find case studies. Actual projects that have been done for a given city or municipality might have their supporting documentation freely available on their websites. And don't be afraid of Wikipedia! It's easy to search and get a brief overview of a case study. However, don't use Wikipedia itself as your source - scroll down to the bottom of the article and use the sources under "References."

DESIGNING CASE STUDY RESEARCH IN CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT
Research methodology is an important and indispensable element in research design. However, designing research strategy such as case study has proven to be a difficult task among research students. Case study is one of the most frequently used qualitative research methodology in the field of construction management; however the design and implementation of case study remains a complex and contentious issue among researchers. Consequently, many students select case study strategy without understanding the array of factors that can affect the outcome of their research. This paper presents a practical, experience-based, step-by-step guide to select, conduct and complete a case study research in construction management. The paper justifies the rationale for adopting case study, explored the various stages in designing case study spanning from the theoretical framework, constructing research themes, data collection and analysis through to validity and reliability issues. This paper contributes in expanding the knowledge of upcoming researchers in the built environment on the design, applications, advantages, disadvantages as well as limitations of case study in construction management researches. The study recommends the research design for students undertaking construction management related studies.

Case study has been regarded an important research strategy in many fields. In investigating complex situation, such as construction projects, case study approach has been proven reliable to capture the rich information for the purpose of the investigation. Case study method has been regarded allowing investigators to retain the holistic and meaningful characteristics of real-life events. However, subsequently to the data capture and analysis, the presentation of the case study has been considered potentially problematic. The presentation of case study has been regarded prone in signifying an egocentric perspective of the analyst. Thus the presentation of the case study should be based on an understanding of the intended audience and their specific needs. This paper intends to explore the appropriateness of case study presentation, particularly of construction projects, for the construction industry audience. Two main presentation formats, namely textual and pictorial diagram forms,...

Case-based reasoning (CBR) has been widely adopted in construction management (CM) research due to the similar mind-sets of CBR and CM problem solving. However, to date, there has been no systematic review of CBR applications in previous CM studies, raising the question of what is the current status quo of CBR applications in CM research? By using the method of content analysis, this study provides a comprehensive literature review of CM CBR articles published between 1996 and January 2015. It is found that the popularity of CBR applications in CM research is increasing, especially after 2006, with a majority emanating from South Korea. In addition, 17 CBR application fields are identified, with the primary research interests focusing on construction cost estimation, construction tendering, bidding and procurement, and environment and sustainability management. Issues in previous CBR model developments are also identified, mainly related to model hypothesis-testing, reuse of case outcomes, selection of model development methods, use of derivational analogy and automated implementation , together with future research suggestions and directions. This study helps provide CM academics and practitioners with a more comprehensive understanding of the development of CBR applications and implications for future studies.

Research in construction management is at an important juncture. Construction scholars are establishing research streams that are complimentary but distinct from architecture and engineering. The applied nature of construction research has put an emphasis on normative research. This has resulted in the lack of a solid foundation of descriptive research that can support theory building. This paper proposes that management research, due to its catholic nature, offers an appropriate reference discipline for construction. It presents an integrated model for construction research and theory development that results from the experiences of management researchers. Lastly it concludes with the development of an empirically developed taxonomy of management types that crosses functional barriers and demonstrates the validity of the model. The paper suggests and the study demonstrates that a process that builds on theory and that employs approaches from management research holds significant promise for research in construction management.

Qualitative research has been considered capable of studying complex situation, yielding rich findings and particularly suitable when involving human subject. This has contributed to its raise in popularity in the built environmental research. Influenced by ‘success stories’ in applying qualitative methods, many doctoral students and researchers in the built environment have been self-convinced to apply qualitative methods in their research and quickly declaring themselves as qualitative researchers. However, it turns out that conducting qualitative research may not be easy after all. There are inherent potential difficulties that may be encountered by researchers in applying qualitative research. In light of this, the working paper aims to shed a light on the matter by discussing relevant issues, namely the nature of doctoral research, research methodology including the research philosophies, the reasoning of research and research on the data level. The final part of the discussion...

Case-study as a qualitative research is a strongly debatable research strategy among all academicians and particularly practitioners. Therefore, in order to provide some upto-date insights into this controversial issue, the current paper seeks to investigate and document some aspects of case-study research. In fact, after reviewing some literatures in order to define, clarify and classify case-study research, the paper tries to consider and trade-off this qualitative strategy from different philosophical perspectives and approaches. Then, by relying on some recently outstanding papers and other highly recognized written resources, the paper gets into the appropriateness of casestudy including Generalizability, Validity, Construct validity, Internal validity and Reliability. Next, the role of case-study to build a social theory is investigated that leads to preset a step-bystep process to achieve this visionary goal. At the end, a brief comparison between case-study, as a common representative of qualitative research, and survey, an indicator of opposite view, is done. This paper contributes to research method’s development used by scholars looking to establish a case research by improving the level of understanding regarding the discussed issues. Index Terms- case-study appropriateness, case-study classification, case-study approaches.

Transforming Financial Management With Sage Intacct and Outsourced Controller Services
A mid-sized construction firm (the Company) with a diverse project portfolio, faced challenges managing its financial processes using manual, paper and Excel-based methods, and QuickBooks. As the Company expanded, these legacy systems struggled to keep pace with the increasing complexities of its financial operations. In response, the Company opted to implement Sage Intacct , a cloud-based financial management solution. Concurrently, it decided to outsource their transactional accounting functions and controller-level review to further optimize financial processes.
1. Manual processes and QuickBooks: The Company relied on manual, paper-based processes and QuickBooks as a basic check register, resulting in inefficiencies and limited financial visibility 2. Project financial visibility: The Company had lack of real-time insights into project financials, hindering decision-making 3. Time constraints for CFO: The CFO faced time constraints due to the manual review process, limiting strategic focus
To address these challenges, the Company simultaneously initiated the implementation of Sage Intacct and decided to outsource their accounting transactions and controller-level review to Cherry Bekaert. This dual approach aimed to automate financial processes, enhance project visibility and free up valuable time for the CFO.
Key Initiatives
1. Outsourced Controller Services:
- System support: The third-party controller service provided dedicated system support, ensuring seamless integration with Sage Intacct and additional third-party software to promptly resolve issues
- Data integrity: The outsourced service provided data integrity during data entry and review, reducing the risk of errors and discrepancies
- Task overview: The controller service offered a comprehensive overview of daily, weekly and monthly tasks, optimizing the financial workflow.
2. Robust Approval Process for Accounts Payable:
- Automated workflow: Sage Intacct and Yooz introduced automated workflows for accounts payable, reducing manual intervention and streamlining the approval process
- Audit trail: The system provided a detailed audit trail, ensuring transparency and accountability in the approval process
- Payment security: With the use of BILL, the Company no longer struggles with time-consuming positive pay approvals and high levels of fraud by replacing their former check issuing system, which improves vendor relationships
3. Accurate Accounting of Employee Expenses:
- Integrated expense management: Sage Intacct seamlessly integrated with the Company’s expense management system, ensuring accurate and timely recording of employee expenses
- Policy compliance: The system helped enforce expense policies, reducing the risk of non-compliance and improving financial accuracy
4. Enhanced Project Visibility:
- Real-time reporting: Sage Intacct’s real-time reporting capabilities empowered project managers and executives with up-to-date financial information, improving decision-making
- Project budgeting: The system facilitated more detailed project budgeting, helping project managers better grasp the success of their projects and stay within budget
- Industry specific KPI’s: The system provided dashboards, including Retention Receivable, Committed Costs, Invoice Backlog, Revenue Recognized %, Invoice to Revenue Ratio %, and WIP Reporting
The dual strategy of implementing Sage Intacct and outsourcing controller-level review has transformed the Company’s financial management. By streamlining processes, automation, and outsourcing controller services, the Company experienced reduced manual effort and optimized daily financial tasks. Additionally, the Cherry Bekaert team enabled the Company with increased data accuracy, enhanced compliance, and reduced errors in financial reporting. Finally, outsourcing the controller-level review freed up valuable time for the Company’s CFO, paving the way for a more strategic focus on organizational growth.
The Company successfully leveraged Sage Intacct and outsourced controller services to achieve a higher level of financial management efficiency, accuracy and strategic focus. This innovative approach positioned the Company for continued success in the competitive construction industry.
