If I’m honest, I only ever had to bind a small handful of assignments for submission, so I never really gave it too much thought. But as I started talking to more different students in different positions, I realised there were actually some important decisions to make when it comes to binding major pieces of work like a thesis or dissertation. You’ve finally made it:

All those hours in the library, all that time bashing away at your keyboard; your big paper is nearing completion. You’ve done your proofreading , and all that remains is to choose the right printing and binding for your thesis or dissertation.

There are three things to think about:

What’s the best binding option for my thesis?

For a big project or thesis, you can’t just stick a staple in it and hope for the best. Your institution might have specific submission guidelines that dictate how your research paper should be bound, which you’d be well-advised to check.

There are four main binding options:

Choosing the right option can be confusing, so we’ve put together a handy overview of binding options for your thesis or dissertation, showing you which type of project each is suitable for, how many pages the binding type can accept, what options you have for the cover, and how they compare on cost:

Leather binding: go classy

Leather binding is the highest quality binding option for your thesis : perfect for major final research papers such as dissertations, or your Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis. Some print shops will let you emboss the cover with your title and institutions logo, or add finishing touches such as a bookmark or corner protectors to make your submission really stand out.

Thermal binding: go versatile

Thermal binding is the most versatile of all bindings . It’s perfect for smaller research projects, but can handle page counts of up to 450 pages too, more than any other bind type. It has a transparent front cover, which immediately brings the title of your thesis to the forefront. The back is often a leather-effect cover, for a quality finish.

Softcover binding: go creative

If you want your dissertation to stand out and look more creative , then we suggest going for a softcover binding. This gives you the option of designing the cover the way you want to. Different fonts, logos, pictures or totally wild designs – when you choose softcover, you can let your creative juices flow!

But go easy on the clipart and don’t let it get too cluttered – you still want to keep a professional-looking finish. In principle, you can use softcover binding for any type of final paper, but the page limit of 300 makes it less suitable for really big projects.

Spiral binding: go low-cost

Spiral binding is the simplest and cheapest option , perfect for smaller research projects and term papers. There are two different types of spirals available – plastic and metal – with plastic spiral bind machines often being found in university / college libraries.

Spiral binding is less suitable for larger submissions such as dissertations and theses as page count is often restricted, and with plastic spiral binding in particular, the plastic binding can interfere with a smooth page turn, making for a less polished reading experience.

What print settings should I choose for my thesis?

Settled on a binding option for your thesis? Great. Now you just need to choose how the interior pages are going to appear.

There are four main things to think about here:

1. Black and white or colour

Printing in colour can be more expensive, but will definitely help your research paper to stand ou t, and may be particularly important in some fields like laboratory science or art history where colour is an essential component of your figures.

Be careful with to avoid gratuitous use of colour in your finished document – overdoing the colour can start to look a little cheesy!

2. Single or double-sided

Opting for double-sided keeps the finished document slimmer, (and is kinder on the planet!) though bear in mind it isn’t necessarily cheaper.

Examiners and assessors sometimes prefer single-sided so they can make notes on one side of the page, so check your institution’s submission guidelines – they often specify whether you must print on both sides of the paper or just one.

3. Paper thickness matters

Paper thickness is measured in “grams per square metre” – “gsm” or “g/m²”.

A higher gsm means a thicker paper and a more premium feel, but typically at a higher price.

Some print shops default to 80gsm. This can cause “bleed-through” when printing double-sided, which is where whatever is printed on the reverse of the page is visible from the front of the page, cheapening the overall feel of your submission.

You’ll see some improvement on bleed-through by upgrading to a thicker paper at 100gsm.

If you’re printing a major submission double-sided, especially if it’s got a lot of ink-heavy figures, you’d be best off opting for a premium 120 gsm paper.

How to Cite a Thesis or Dissertation in APA

In this citation guide, you will learn how to reference and cite an undergraduate thesis, master’s thesis, or doctoral dissertation. This guide will also review the differences between a thesis or dissertation that is published and one that has remained unpublished. The guidelines below come from the 7th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (2020a), pages 333 and 334. Please note that the association is not affiliated with this guide.

Guide Overview

Citing an unpublished thesis or dissertation, citing a published dissertation or thesis from a database, citing a thesis or dissertation published online but not from a database, citing a thesis or dissertation: reference overview, what you need.

Since unpublished theses can usually only be sourced in print form from a university library, the correct citation structure includes the university name where the publisher element usually goes.

Author’s last name, F. M. (Year published). Title in sentence case [Unpublished degree type thesis or dissertation]. Name of institution.

Ames, J. H., & Doughty, L. H. (1911). The proposed plans for the Iowa State College athletic field including the design of a reinforced concrete grandstand and wall [Unpublished bachelor’s thesis]. Iowa State University.

In-text citation example:

• Parenthetical :  (Ames & Doughty, 1911)
• Narrative :  Ames & Doughty (1911)

If a thesis or dissertation has been published and is found on a database, then follow the structure below. It’s similar to the format for an unpublished dissertation/thesis, but with a few differences:

• The institution is presented in brackets after the title
• The archive or database name is included

Author’s last name, F. M. (Year published). Title in sentence case (Publication or Document No.) [Degree type thesis or dissertation, Name of institution]. Database name.

Knight, K. A. (2011). Media epidemics: Viral structures in literature and new media (Accession No. 2013420395) [Doctoral dissertation, University of California, Santa Barbara]. ProQuest Dissertations Publishing.

Trotman, J.B. (2018). New insights into the biochemistry and cell biology of RNA recapping (Document No. osu1523896565730483) [Doctoral dissertation, Ohio State University]. OhioLINK Electronic Theses & Dissertations Center.

In the example given above, the dissertation is presented with a Document Number (Document No.). Sometimes called a database number or publication number, this is the identifier that is used by the database’s indexing system. If the database you are using provides you with such a number, then include it directly after the work’s title in parentheses.

It is important to note that not every thesis or dissertation published online will be associated with a specific archive or collection. If the work is published on a private website, provide only the URL as the source element.

You will need to know which type you are citing. You’ll also need to know if it is published or unpublished .

When you decide to cite a dissertation or thesis, you’ll need to look for the following information to use in your citation:

• Author’s last name, and first and middle initials
• Year published
• Title of thesis or dissertation
• If it is unpublished
• Publication or document number (if applicable; for published work)
• Degree type (bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral)
• Thesis or dissertation
• Name of institution awarding degree
• DOI (https://doi.org/xxxxx) or URL (if applicable)

Since theses and dissertations are directly linked to educational degrees, it is necessary to list the name of the associated institution; i.e., the college, university, or school that is awarding the associated degree.

Registration

Before you can register your thesis, we at the ZPA first check whether you meet the admission requirements. In most degree programs, we confirm this on the registration form, which is then further completed by your examiner.

If the registration form is not available for download on the faculty or department website, you will receive it by email from your responsible clerk here at the ZPA. Please contact your ZPA contact person for this. They will also be happy to explain to you exactly how the registration process works for your degree program.

Once we have checked the admission requirements, we will either send you or the supervising chair the registration form by email. This is regulated differently among the degree programs. If the chair of your degree program sends us the registration form directly, please provide us with the necessary contact information in advance. In some degree programs, the registration form must also be signed by the examination board or the occupational field supervisor.

Once we have received the completed and signed registration form, we will register your thesis in RWTHonline. You can then view it there in the "My achievements" tab. Your latest submission date will also be published there.

In most degree programs, you have to submit your thesis to us at the ZPA. You can find out whether this also applies to your degree program in your subject-specific or discipline-specific examination regulations, available for download via the Official Announcements . Usually, the paragraph "Acceptance and Evaluation of the Bachelor's Thesis" or "Acceptance and Evaluation of the Master's Thesis" contains this information.

Please submit the following:

• the number of printed and bound copies specified in your subject-specific or discipline-specific examination regulations
• if applicable, a data carrier with a digital version of your thesis
• a separate (i.e. not bound) Declaration of Academic Integrity
• if applicable, your application for using a logo

If your submission is not complete, we will not be able to forward your work to your examiners. Therefore, until you have submitted the missing documents, your work will remain with us at the ZPA.

There are four ways of submitting your thesis:

Office Hours

If you would like to hand in your thesis in person, you can use our office hours. Please book an appointment via the appointment tool . Please note that we will send your thesis to your examiners by internal email in any case. You may not take your thesis with you and submit it to your examiners in person.

After-Hours Mailbox

You can submit your thesis via the after-hours mailbox around the clock. The submission date will be accurately recorded. Please pack your work in one or more envelopes and indicate the ZPA, including the name of your clerk , as the addressee. Please note that particularly large theses may not fit through the mail slot in one envelope. In this case, please use several envelopes and address them all as described above. If you are approaching it with the Main Building entrance in front of you, the after-hours mailbox is located on the right side, about 20 meters behind the entrance to the Bistro, covered under a glass roof. Submission via Postal Mail

You can also send your thesis via postal mail. Please then pack your work in one or more suitable envelopes and address it to the clerk responsible for you. Please be sure to note that the date of receipt, not the postmark, is what counts when determining whether your submission is on time. Therefore, please allow sufficient postal delivery time.

Digital Submission

August 24, 2022, saw the start of a pilot project allowing students to submit their theses digitally using a new application (DivA). Students of the initially participating programs must now submit their theses in this way. You can find further information on the form of digital submission and transition periods in your course-specific examination regulations under RWTH’s Official Announcements.

Please be aware: Central European Time (CET) applies to the binding submission deadline.

If you will be submitting your thesis digitally, please also note the following:

If you would like to use an RWTH logo for your cover page, the corporate design regulations still apply, and you must upload an application for logo use. For more information and the application, please visit the Logo Usage webpage.

The title of the submitted work must be the same as the one under which you registered the work. If a title change is necessary, please apply to the responsible examination board for approval early on so that the ZPA can still change the title before your submission. Please note that, as a rule, the examiner must agree to the request for a title change.

Will I receive a written confirmation of my thesis submission?

No, however, we will note the submission on RWTHonline. You can see your submission date via the "My achievements“ tab there.

Do I have to successfully pass the “Scientific Integrity” module to register my Master’s thesis?

Yes, according to the General Examination Regulations, the “Scientific Integrity” module is a prerequisite for admission to the Master’s thesis for all students who have enrolled in a Master’s program for the winter semester of 2020/21 or later.

This module is offered in an online format only and is completed in a flexible and self-directed manner. All relevant information and materials can be found in the associated RWTHmoodle classroom. Access is gained by registering for the “Scientific Integrity” course in RWTHonline. The exam is offered twice a semester. Registration for the exam in RWTHonline is mandatory to complete the course.

Do I need to include a separate Declaration of Academic Integrity or logo use request for each copy of my thesis that I submit?

No. Please include only one Declaration of Academic Integrity or logo use request with your work.

I am currently in a location with a different time zone to Germany and would like to submit my thesis digitally. What do I need to bear in mind?

Please note that Central European Time (CET) applies to the binding submission deadline. Make sure you know the exact time difference with Germany ahead of time.

Searching for uva publications.

UvA Scripties  is a service through which the University of Amsterdam (UvA) enables worldwide digital access to the theses (master / bachelor) of its students. Theses written at the Faculty of Dentistry (ACTA) are not available in UvA Scripties, and for several faculties only the theses written for specific study programmes are available.

In the  UvA library catalogue  you can find (older) student theses of which a paper version has been added to the library collection.

The University of Amsterdam has a so-called Digital Academic Repository, UvA-DARE. This repository contains publications of UvA researchers. More than 43,000 publications are available in open access ( reference date: July 2020 ).

• Searching for words : You can search on single words or a phrase. Entering "research and policy" in one search field will show the results that contain the exact phrase 'research and policy'. 
• Case sensitive : No difference is made between upper and lower case letters.
• Wildcards : To search for variations of a word or word stem, include an asterisk (*) at the end of the word as a wildcard. The query “war*”, will for example produce results that include ‘wars’, ‘warrior’, ‘warm’ and so forth.

All UvA researchers can register and upload (metadata of) their publications to UvA-DARE via the current research information system Pure .

After registration and uploading, the information and file (if open access) will be automatically available on your personal page and after validation by your institute or faculty and the library, also in UvA-DARE.

PhD Dissertations

Please note: PhD theses cannot be registered and uploaded via Pure. If you would like more information about adding your dissertation, please see the webpage Publishing Your Doctoral Dissertation .

Many publications that are covered by DARE are open access : they can be read by anyone, anyplace, regardless of affiliation or subscription. These publications are marked with the open access logo. Normal copyright rules apply.

There are great advantages to making your publication worldwide available. Open access enhances visibility of publications. Publications which are freely available are downloaded and cited more often, are easy to find by Google (Scholar) and will be deposited (for long term preservation) in the e-depot of the Royal Library. If your publisher does not give permission to give access to the definitive publisher's version/PDF, in many cases it is permitted to make the last author version available (i.e. the version after peer review). This version has the same scientific content, but lacks the publisher's lay-out. More information can be found on the open access pages.

By navigating through the sidebar or the product tiles on our start page you will have access to the various product options available at our online printing service. The total price will be calculated for you and is immediately visible to you during configuration of your desired product.

If you want to compare different versions of your product, use the 'Duplicate product' option in your shopping cart. You can always modify all the products in your shopping cart again before your finally place your order.

Which Kinds of Bookbinding Are Available?

If you want to bind a document as a book, then you have a lot of possibilities. Depending on the type of document some binding options may be more appropriate than others.

At the most basic level we distinguish between hardcover bindings and softcover bindings.

While softcover bindings originally were for documents which are often in use and therefore need to be more flexible, today it is also used for many scientific works. Whether you want to print a term paper, a bachelor, master's or doctoral thesis, a softcover binding can open up many creative possibilities. Softcover bindings are especially suited to brochures and booklets of all kinds.

Hardcover bindings are preferable if you want an especially durable and stable book. If you want to present the results of your thesis in an elegant look, then hardcover bindings offer many options to provide you with a beautifully designed final product. Here you can either choose a stylish foil-stamped lettering (in gold, silver or other colours) on a leather or linen cover, or alternatively your individually designed printed cover.

Printing Softcover Books: The Various Binding Options

Paperback : Perfect softcover binding , which we use to create paperbacks, is a particularly inexpensive and good-looking softcover binding, which allows you to make documents with up to 350 pages. At our online copy shop a variety of coloured cardboards are available. You also have the possibility to have an individual design printed on the cover. Your document will be printed and then glued into the cardboard cover. For this we use newest technology and high quality materials, so that the result remains stable and durable even after frequent use. The A4 and A5 paper formats are available, but you can also specify your own dimensions. An online cover designer is available for all formats. When you bind a dissertation or thesis, create a brochure or want to print a book, then perfect softcover binding is a convenient and high-quality choice.

Saddle-Stitched Brochure : Saddle-stitched brochures are suitable for music books, pamphlets and other documents under 80 pages long. Again, the cover design is entirely up to you and you can choose from many types of paper. The pages of your document will be stapled together with wire staples at the fold line, so the resulting booklet can be completely opened and folded without breaking the spine. You can choose between A4 and A5 paper format.

Plastic Ring Binding : The plastic ring binding or plastic spiral binding is particularly low-priced. The individual print pages are held together by a set of plastic rings; cover and spine can be designed on different cardboards. A4, A5 and A6 formats are available. The plastic spiral can be opened again, so that it is also suitable for the organization of work materials or seminar documents. If you wish to print a thesis or bind a presentation as a book, then the plastic spiral binding is a practical, affordable choice.

Wire Ring Binding : Wire-O spiral binding is ideal if you want to print documents such as transcripts, training documents or lecture notes as a flexible book. The individual pages are held together with a metal wire ring. Different colours, cardboards and formats are available.

Wall Calendars : Our wall calendars can be ordered in formats A4 and A3. Give free reign to your imagination and use your own images and design for a product or gift with a very personal touch.

Strip Binding : Strip Binding is particularly suitable if you want to print long documents such as books, dissertations or business documents. Up to 440 sheets of paper can be bound together with this stable binding system. A comb-like binding strip holds the sheets together while the spine will be reinforced with a fabric tape.
