All our current PhD studentship opportunities are listed on this page.

In order to apply, please visit the University of Brighton website by clicking the “Apply Now” link below, and select “Doctoral College” as the School. You should then select the project that you wish to apply for.

Apply for your PHD here >

We are also happy to consider applications from self-funded individuals, and for personally developed projects, we recommend an approach to a lead supervisor, following which you will have help and support with your application.

For self-funded and speculative applications, we require that you submit a research proposal alongside your application. Measuring the brain’s energy dynamics in order to establish crucial biomarkers for mood disorders

Supervisors: Dr Iris Asllani, Dr Alessandro Colasanti

Application deadline: Tuesday 30 April 2024

About the Project

The brain is one of the most metabolically active organs in the body, consuming a disproportionately large amount of energy compared to its size. Measuring its energy dynamics is essential for understanding brain function and addressing various mood disorders, such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, where dysregulation of brain energy metabolism is implicated. This PhD project aims to advance our understanding of these disorders by developing a robust, multi-modal Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) method for in vivo assessment of the brain's energy dynamics specifically tailored for mood disorder applications. By capturing the key components of brain energy dynamics through imaging, we seek to construct a model that sheds light on the underlying mechanisms of mood disorders. Such efforts are critical for the advancement of more effective treatments.

The PhD student involved in this project will collaborate with a diverse team of researchers, including neuroscientists, psychiatrists, and MRI physicists. Our MRI centre offers an ideal environment for cutting-edge translational research. The campus is located in the lively coastal city of Brighton, offering students a variety of opportunities for engagement in diverse activities both on and off-campus.

Funding Notes

The studentship will be funded for a 3-year duration. The funding will cover home fees, a stipend at the UKRI rate, and research costs of up to £3,000 per annum. If a ‘top-up’ to international fees is required, this must be provided by the applicant from their own funds or external sources.

How to apply

In order to apply, please visit the University of Brighton website, and select “Doctoral College” as the School, and you will see the project listed to apply directly.

Brighton students welcome President of Institute of Civil Engineers

Students at the University of Brighton welcomed one of the UK’s top engineers to Moulsecoomb campus this week.

The visit from Anusha Shah, President of the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE), is part of an ongoing series by industry figures aimed at students studying civil engineering . In a talk titled “Building Connections for a Nature- and People-Positive World” to students, Anusha Shah addressed the challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss, emphasising the importance of collaboration across sectors and disciplines to find sustainable solutions.

During the visit the President toured facilities in the university’s Civil Engineering Laboratory and Advanced Engineering Building including its robotics suite and virtual reality labs with Dr Imran Rafiq, Dean of the university’s School of Architecture, Technology and Engineering and also met with Vice-Chancellor Professor Debra Humphris CBE.

Dr Imran Rafiq, Dean of the School of Architecture, Technology and Engineering, said: “Core values of the University of Brighton are inclusivity, sustainability, creativity and partnership, which perfectly align with the priorities set by the ICE particularly with the emphasis on climate emergency, positively influence of the civil infrastructure projects on the environment, and inclusivity within the profession. This visit strengthens the collaboration between academia and industry in addressing the pertinent global challenges and supports the development of skills in our graduates to address these challenges.”

Left to right: Anusha Shah, President of the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) and Dr Imran Rafiq, Dean of the School of Architecture, Technology and Engineering

Anusha Shah said that visits from industry professionals can help students and staff bring to life their academic work and link to real world projects: “Equally the industry can bring to universities the complex problems and blockers that need more research and development. It’s a win win partnership, particularly as we are running out of time to drive solutions to challenges, such as the climate and nature crisis.”

Dr. Shah’s visit was organised by the Civil Engineering Team in response to an initiative by the Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) who advise the university on curriculum development to ensure it meets industry needs. The IAB also offers students opportunities for mentorship, such as mock interviews and CV review sessions. The President ended her visit with a meeting with members of the IAB including Chair Nigel Clifford who advises the university on curriculum development to ensure it meets industry needs. The IAB also offers students opportunities for mentorship, such as mock interviews and CV review sessions.

He said: “At Brighton we believe we are particularly active in providing direct interaction with the students, for instance by offering surgery sessions, mock interviews and reviewing CVs.”

This is the second time an ICE President has visited the university in recent years, with President Ed McCann visiting in 2022.

Civil engineering in Brighton is currently at 12th in the Guardian University League 2024 and is currently being led by Dr Saniul Alam.
