How To Write a Good Travel Essay - Guide with Examples

Introduction

“Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.”

-Gustav Flaubert

Packing the duffel with the bare essentials and hopping into the car, getting behind the steering wheel and driving with no perfect destination in mind – we all dream to live such a life, don't we? Travelling to unseen places and exploring what it has to offer can be an enriching experience. However beautiful can travel be as an experience, writing a travelling essay can be quite a challenge. It may seem easy to come up with the ideas that you want to include in the essay but putting them into coherent sentences can be difficult. Your words should be impactful enough to be able to sweep the readers off their feet and take them on the cliff or make them feel the saline breeze on a beach.

A perfect travel essay must reflect the journey and highlight the little-known facts about the region. It should be infused with the character and culture of the place. If you are feeling stymied while writing a travel essay, then we have some brilliant tips for you that can make the task considerably easy for you.

8 tips for an outstanding essay on travelling

Here are 8 tips that you can cash on to produce a winning travelling essay:

  • Be specific with the destination

Before you choose a topic for your travel essay, keep the time spent in the location in mind. If your trip is just for a couple of days, then do not make the mistake of writing about an entire city. Think it out practically – is it possible to travel through a city in just a few days? Take for instance your essay is about London. It is quite an insurmountable task to be able to cover all the distance even in a week. So stick to a particular destination so that you can include the nuances and minutest details of the place to paint a picture in the reader’s mind with your words.

  • Less guide, more exploring

Also, the destination need not be about an exotic locale. It can be a story about an idyllic rustic location in the suburb of the teeming city. It can be about a cottage up on the hills with just the view of snowy valleys and iced peaks. Your words should give the sense of exploring and not touring. The essay should not be like a guide. It should be a view of the location through your lens.

  • Know the location like the back of your hand

Before starting to write a travel essay, do your research. A travel essay isn’t a made-up story so there should not be any fake information. Readers will be looking for more than just the necessary information about the must-visit tourist attractions. So you need to go beyond the surface and include more about the history of the place. Just do not write about the restaurants – talk about the cuisine of the place and the story behind it, if any. To get into the innermost recesses of the location, you can speak to the residents of the area. To bring richness in your travel essay, you must reveal another side of the destination.

  • Include the nitty-gritty

The key to an impressive travel essay is to be able to break down the location into kernels and write the core details about them. As mentioned earlier, so not just write about the tourist attractions and restaurants in the destination. Write about the lesser talked streets and unknown landmarks and the history behind them. If the place is known for its delicacies, write about how the cuisine has evolved and who had started it. From quaint bookstores to ice cream parlours to run-down shabby pubs – shed light to such nuances to bring your essay to life. You can even mention the negative things that you have faced in the place – like irregular transport modes or impolite locals. These little details will help you make your essay more impactful.

  • Be creative with the writing style

Since a travel essay is more like an anecdote, there is no specific format to write it. Therefore, a travel essay gives you the scope of setting your foot into the unchartered areas of creativity. You have got the creative freedom to write what you want. You can study how the natives of the locale speak and learn some of the basic words and phrases they use. To put them into writing you can read the local newspaper to get the pulse of the city you are in. Using the colloquial lingo can help the reader get a closer peek into the lives of the people living in the place. It will reflect a slice of how they live their way of life. Your words should be simple and yet impactful to portray and not just merely narrate. Touch every bit of the rust in the roof to make the reader feel like they are on the same journey with you.

  • Make it personal

The travel essay is your story. So add some personal experience in the story and at the same time do not make it self-indulgent. Include stories that can resonate with all your readers. Your experiences should be able to bring the reader back to the travel destination and connect him with the place. It should be the perfect blend of narration of the experiences you had while on the trip along with a vivid description of the place. To achieve the balance, write your essay in first person perspective to give a real touch to the story. Include the most interesting bits that will help the reader connect with you. You can even include the quotes of natives living in the area you had visited.

  • Start with a captivating catch

Like every essay, the introduction is the key to make it an impressive read. The opening should be capturing enough to attract the reader’s attention. It should leave an impact and should make them want to go on reading the piece. Start with an unknown fact about the place and leave it hanging from the cliff. Use a tone of suspense to excite the readers to keep them guessing about the contents of the essay.

  • Make it vivid with images

For certain places, words may fall short in being able to explain the exact description of a place. You cannot describe how the sky looked with the mountains seemingly touching the clouds or the horizon fading beyond the sea. Certain things cannot be explained in words – like the color of the sky or the water! This is where pictures come in! Providing real images of the place in between can help the readers stay connected. Vivid photos can also make the readers understand the story better by bringing them closer to it. So make sure you take breathtaking pictures of the place you are writing about. The images will help your essay stay in the readers’ mind longer.

With the above tips, we are sure you will be able to write an excellent travelling essay  that will impress your professor and fetch you a good grade.

And if you are still unsure about putting these to use, then below is a winning sample to show you how it is done!

Travelling essay sample

I have visited London several times, and yet it is amazing how I find something new to explore every time I visit the capital city. My visit last autumn too did not fail to surprise me. With the hustle and bustle and the rich royal history, London city has a lot to offer. Since I just had a few days to spare, I wanted to make the best out of this trip.

Although vast and sprawling, I decided to visit most of the city on foot this time. Now since in my previous visits I had seen most of the tourist-y attractions already, I wanted to take the path less travelled this time to discover the hidden gems of the city. The last time I had been to London, I had missed out on the chance to visit the chock full of literature and history that awaited me in the Shakespeare Globe Theatre. Being a student of literature, visiting the place where the Bard of Avon once enacted the plays he wrote was a spellbinding moment. And guess what? I also caught a staging of the Macbeth before I left the place. Before heading towards the Hyde Park tube station, I grabbed some of London’s famous Fish ‘n’ Chips from the oldest food market of the city, the Borough Market. From Hyde Park to Tower Hill in under fifteen minutes by Tube, I began exploring the Tower of London. It was there that I heard a guard speaking about where he hailed from. A quick conversation with Peter, I had gotten intrigued to know more about his village – Suffolk in Lavenham. I asked him how to get there and Peter, being the quintessential helping guide that Londoners are known to be, told me that I could either take a car from central London. Or I could wait for the next day and take the train from Liverpool to Sudbury and then take the bus route 753 and reach in around two hours. Having nothing to do, I spent that day in the British Museum and walking on Oxford Street.

The next morning, I started my journey to the quaint village of Suffolk. I had picked up a book about the village where I learned that the village had once housed Henry III in 1257. And a bonus for all the Harry Potter fans – the village also starred in ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ as Godric’s Hollow where Hermoine and Harry are seen to be visiting Bathilda Bagshot. On reaching the village, the first thing that grabbed my attention was the picture-perfect silhouette of prosperous medieval England with all the half-timbered houses. The lime-washed and brightly coloured buildings added an idyllic element to the village with the De Vere House standing out from the rest. Adding to the rustic touch was the fifteenth-century St Peter Church with its soaring height of a 141ft tower. The autumn breeze welcomed me as I walked on the leaf-covered high streets. I saw some young guns cycling around in a park and called out to them for directions. My stay for the trip was an Air BnB home-stay where I had to put up with an elderly couple – the Havishams. I still remember how on reaching the gate of the house, I had caught a waft of crumpets and hot scones. After an exchange of banalities followed by me gorging on the scones, I had found out about the hidden gems from Mr Havisham who happened to be quite a cheerful talker. He told me what a must-visit Hadley’s was when in Suffolk. I had then set out with a local map to find the hidden gem. On reaching I had found that Hadley’s was a cutesy ice cream shop, almost run down, run by an old lady. Here Rebecca told me how the ice cream parlour was opened back in the 1850s and was still known for their hand-made sorbets.

Like the sorbet, my stay in Suffolk had been a sweet experience – a trip of revelation. The tour – with all the lonely walks – had in an inexplicable way helped me to get my perspectives right. It isn’t the exotic locales and the flight above the clouds that make travelling my drug. Rather, it is little but beautiful discoveries like Suffolk that feed my wanderlust. Thank you, London. Thank you for being a wonderful experience, once again.

A Visit To An Amusement Park (Essay/Paper Sample)

Table of Contents

A VISIT TO AN AMUSEMENT PARK

It was one boring Saturday, just a few days after my summer holidays began. I had travelled to Toronto to stay with my mum. She is an artist and she wanted me to help her develop a collection for her next art exhibition. As always, if I wasn’t reading a novel, I would be busy painting or drawing. But that day was kind of different. I sat on the couch at corner, held my laptop, read several art blogs and posted comments. I tried social media, even funny posts could not move me. I was just so uneasy and bored. Was it the heat or what? I couldn’t really figure it out.

“Paulette and I are going to the amusement park at Vaughan. Want to come?” mum asked. She stood leaning against the wall, dressed in denim jeans and a loose white chiffon top. She loved heels but that day she was in oxfords. Her hair was loosely held in a bun and her beautiful watery hazel eyes looked directly at me, behind sunglasses though. She was just like a model awaiting a photo shoot. “You look great ma!” I could not help but comment with an awe expression on my face “and yes, I am going with you guys.” I replied.

Canada’s Wonderland Amusement Park was our destination. At first I felt like amusement parks were for kids but that day I got the best shock of my life. Trust me it is fun and adventurous. It feels like going to the moon and back. Paulette, my mother’s best friend, was particularly out of control. All she did was take photos, run around the vast parking lot and shout, “Oh girls, I am so excited!” We finally bought tickets, got a map and went in.

There were too many rides in the park. We started with the Flight Deck. For a moment, I felt my heart throb hard against my chest at an increasing pace as if it wanted to come out. Cold sweat trickled slowly down my spine. The palm of my hands got wetter as seconds passed as I clung tightly to the rail. I could feel a great gush of adrenaline in my system and I did not even notice when and how I started to scream so loud like a banshee. What an experience that was! Time Warp was not so different. We just had to lie on our bellies instead of sitting. All I could do was close my eyes, hold my teeth together and pray that the whole affair ends so quickly. I could not handle any more circular movements. The little strength I had left was preserved for the Leviathan, the longest roller coaster in the park. That was the climax, the mother of all rides. I left that place momentarily deaf, because tears blocked my ears and my eyes were slightly watery and my throat was sore from all the screaming.

A ride on the bumper cars made me feel 15 years younger. Mum opted to take photos of us as we (Paulette and I) bumped into each other’s rides. We made a lot of noise. I felt like a kid once again. After all the fun, we were really tired. It was getting late already. We had to go back home. I really had lots of fun. If being a child could give one such pleasure and happiness, I would not really wish to grow up any time soon. I promised myself to go back and cover the places I did not go to. I could not wait to brag to my friends about my experience.

Whether you scaled mountains, navigated foreign cities, or embarked on a wilderness safari, each moment holds a story worth telling. Here’s how to craft a compelling short essay about your adventurous trip that captures the essence of your experience.

Introduction

Begin with an attention-grabbing opener that sets the tone for your adventure. Introduce the destination and the purpose of your trip, leading into a thesis statement that outlines what your essay will cover.

My Adventurous Trip Essay Example #1

Traveling is one of the most exciting experiences one can have in life. It allows us to explore new places, meet different people, and create unforgettable memories. My recent adventurous trip was one such experience that I will cherish for a lifetime. The trip involved hiking through a dense forest, crossing a river, and reaching the summit of a mountain, where I enjoyed a breathtaking view. Despite facing challenges such as unpredictable weather and rough terrain, the trip was a memorable and rewarding experience. In this essay, I will share my experience of this adventurous trip, highlighting the challenges, the exhilarating moments, and the memories that I will cherish forever.

Our trip started with hiking through a dense forest. The forest was full of tall trees, colorful flowers, and chirping birds. The trail was steep and rocky, and we had to be careful while walking. The forest was so dense that we could hardly see the sun, and the air was full of freshness. We had to take breaks in between to catch our breath and hydrate ourselves. As we walked, we could hear the sound of a river, and after a few hours of hiking, we finally reached the river. The river was wide and had a strong current, and we had to cross it to continue our journey. We had to be careful while crossing the river, and we held hands to maintain our balance. The water was cold, and we could feel the current pushing us, but we made it to the other side, feeling proud of ourselves.

Despite facing challenges such as unpredictable weather and rough terrain, the trip was a memorable and rewarding experience. We had to face unexpected rain and strong winds, which made the climb more challenging. We slipped a few times, but we managed to keep going, motivated by the thought of reaching the summit. The journey was long and tiring, but the memories we created were worth it. We bonded with our fellow travelers, shared laughter, and created memories that we will cherish forever. The trip taught us to be resilient, to push ourselves beyond our limits, and to appreciate the beauty of nature.

In conclusion, my adventurous trip was an unforgettable experience that allowed me to explore the beauty of nature, push my limits, and create memories that I will cherish forever. Hiking through a dense forest, crossing a river, and reaching the summit of a mountain were challenging but rewarding experiences. Despite facing unpredictable weather and rough terrain, we persevered and created memories that will stay with us for a lifetime. The trip taught us the importance of resilience, perseverance, and appreciation for the beauty of nature. It was an experience that I will always treasure and would love to relive again.

My Adventurous Trip Essay Example #2

Hiking was one of the most exciting activities of the trip. We started our hike early in the morning, and the trail was challenging, but the view was worth it. The trail led us through dense forests, and we saw wildflowers, butterflies, and birds along the way. We stopped for a break at a small waterfall, and the sound of the water was soothing. As we continued our hike, we came across a steep incline, which was physically demanding, but we pushed on. At the peak, we were rewarded with an incredible view of the valley below. The sense of accomplishment we felt after completing the hike was indescribable.

Camping was another activity that added to the adventure of the trip. We set up our tents near a lake, and the view was breathtaking. We spent the night sitting around a campfire, roasting marshmallows, and sharing stories. The night sky was clear, and we saw countless stars, which was a beautiful sight. The next morning, we woke up early to go kayaking on the lake. The water was calm, and we saw fish jumping out of the water. We even saw a family of ducks swimming nearby. Kayaking was a peaceful and relaxing experience.

My Adventurous Trip Essay Example #3

Going on an adventurous trip is an experience that many people crave. It is an opportunity to explore new destinations, push oneself to the limit, and create unforgettable memories. Along the way, I encountered challenging terrain and had to navigate through rough terrain. Despite the difficulties, the stunning views and sense of accomplishment made the trip a truly unforgettable adventure. In this essay, I will describe my trip in detail, highlighting the challenges and the rewards that came with it.

The final part of my adventurous trip was the sense of accomplishment that came with it. After several hours of hiking, navigating challenging terrain, and enduring unpredictable weather, we finally reached our destination. The feeling of standing in front of the waterfall, surrounded by the beauty of nature, was indescribable. It was a sense of accomplishment that came from pushing ourselves beyond our limits, from facing our fears and overcoming them. We took pictures, laughed, and savored the moment. It was a feeling that stayed with us long after the trip was over. The adventurous trip was not just a physical journey; it was also a journey of the mind and the spirit.

In conclusion, my adventurous trip was an experience that I will never forget. 17th March 2021, Saturday 7:00 pm.

Dear Diary,

I can not wait to share the fun day I had today!

My family decided to go for a picnic in an amusement park. Such family events happened often but due to the pandemic situation, things changed. So I was very excited to go on a picnic after so long. WonderLaa is a well-known amusement park all over India. The theme park has a lot of thrill-seeking rides, like the Maverick, Roller Coaster, Dungeon ride among many others.

As I lay eyes on these towering rides, I was really excited to join in the fun. The ride I found most memorable was the Recoil. India’s first reverse looping roller coaster was a thrill to ride. Dear diary, I am really happy to have experienced such an amazing time with my parents and I hope to visit again soon.

Question-2: Write a diary entry, About a visit to an amusement park with your friends.

Hints: Which amusement park did you go to? – Your experience with your friends?- Most memorable event of the day?- Will you visit again?

8th  March 2021, Thursday, 6:00 pm.

I am really glad to pen down the fun day I had today.

I was really excited to visit this famous amusement park with my friends. It was a short trip to WonderLa, the biggest, most thrilling amusement park in the city. The first look into the amusement park with those towering rides was a site to remember. My friends and I had the most fun in the Flash Tower, a 40-meter free-fall ride. As the shuttle was let go from the 40 meters height, all of us screamed out in fear and excitement.

I spent the rest of the day ride-hoping with my friends. It was a day filled with fun and laughter. So the memories I had there are something I will always cherish and I pray that such days will always return and I get to have as much fun when I go back there.

Ashish.

Question-3: Write a diary entry, About a visit to an amusement park for a birthday party celebration.

Hints: Which amusement park did you go to? – Your experience in the amusement park?- Describe the birthday party you went to?

8th  March 2021, Saturday 5:00 pm

My friend’s birthday was splendid, and I can’t wait to share the story with you.

Raj invited me over to his birthday party held at WonderLa amusement park. I was greeted by my friend in the banquet hall. After the cake cutting ceremony all of us headed to a day filled with unlimited rides for as long as we wanted. Recoil, Flash tower, The Maverick and other such rides were full of thrill. I would definitely ride the Recoil on my next visit.

The party ended with a small magic show. The magician performed many outstanding tricks that left us all spellbound and curious. After the show ended I knew it was time to get back home, I thanked my friend for the wonderful time I had and I wished to come back here to experience such a thrilling day again.

Question-4: Write a diary entry, About a visit to an amusement park organised by your school.

Hints: Which amusement park did you go to? – Your experience with your classmates there?- Describe the events you enjoyed and experienced there.

4th  March 2021, Thursday 4:00 pm

I had an amazing visit to this amusement park with all my classmates.

My class was informed that we were going to visit WonderLa, which is one of the most well known amusement parks in the city. It was a wish come true. The rides there were amazing with kids my age playing all around. All of my classmates joined in the fun as well. My most memorable ride there was the Equinox. This daredevil ride at its peak position traveled upside down from a height of 16 meters from the ground, and everyone should at least experience this thrill once.

There were also rides like crazy cars, where we bummed against each other in our cars and all I saw was my friends laughing and enjoying together. Such rides made my school visit to this amusement park very memorable and I wish to visit as soon as I can.

The 'Sucker' singer shared tons of cute pictures, showing off his fatherly side, as he spent a day at an amusement park with his in-laws.

Nick Jonas   is an amazing dad! The Jonas Brother, 31, shared a sweet moment with his two-year-old daughter  Malti  during a day out at a theme park on his Instagram on Wednesday, June 26. The “Burnin’ Up” singer shared three photos from their daddy-daughter day, with his wife  Priyanka Chopra’s   parents appearing in the final shot, where Malti met some of her favorite TV characters.

For the outing, Nick rocked a denim button-down shirt, a pair of black slacks, and white sneakers. He also accessorized with a set of shades. Malti was wearing an offwhite jumper, but in the second photo she matched her daddy with a denim jacket of her own. She also accessorized with a white cap. In the first photo, Nick was crouching down to give his daughter a hug. In the second shot, the two of them were holding hands as they walked by the water.

The last photo featured appearances from Priyanka’s relatives, including her mom, and they got to meet some of the characters from  Paw Patrol . Nick referenced meeting the cartoon characters in his caption. “We met  Paw Patrol ,” he wrote after a heart emoji. Priyanka commented on the post with a heart-eyes emoji.

Nick and Priyanka, 41, welcomed Malti via surrogacy in January 2022. Over the years, they’ve shared glimpses into their lives as parents, with tons of adorable photos and videos of Malti. Other than the amusement park trip, it’s clear that they both love taken part in fun activities with their daughter, like when the  Baywatch  actress shared a cute video of Nick playing with Malti in a ball pit, back in February.

As Malti has been getting older, Nick opened up about how much he’s loved getting to see her personality bloom in an appearance on the  Read the Room  podcast in November. “Her sense of humor and her ability to laugh at situations, and even her mischievous attitude, it’s great,” the  A Little Bit Longer  star said.

20 riders evacuated from Disney rollercoaster after being stuck on tracks for 30 minutes

At least twenty people had to be evacuated after a rollercoaster at Disney California Adventure Park in Anaheim reportedly malfunctioned and stopped on the tracks Sunday in what a Disney official said was "completely standard downtime and evacuation for this attraction."

Incredicoaster , located in Pixar Pier at the Disney California Adventure Park stopped around 1:30 p.m. Sunday, local media reported via OC Hawk.

Riders present on the rollercoaster were "kept comfortable with shade and water," the Disney official told USA TODAY, given temperatures were more than 80 degrees during the day in Anaheim Sunday. KTLA5 reported that riders were handed umbrellas to keep cool.

Goodbye Genie+? Big changes are coming to Disney World’s ride reservation system

The Disneyland official said guests were off the ride in about 30 minutes, disputing a report from NBC Los Angeles that passengers were stuck for more than an hour before they were evacuated by Disneyland workers in safety harnesses.

Disney did not immediately clarify what caused the ride to stop, except that the matter was resolved quickly and without incident. The Disney spokesperson added that many attractions have evacuations as part of the standard response to a downtime and that guests are sometimes escorted off the attraction if it requires a reset.

A similar incident also took place the day before, according to Facebook live video streamed by Vince Crandon around 8:15 p.m. Saturday. Video footage from the incident shows the stalled ride as park workers hand umbrellas and water to the riders. Crandon told NBC Los Angeles he believes the passengers were stuck for about 20-30 minutes before being evacuated.

Inspired by Disney's animated feature "The Incredibles," the Incredicoaster features big drops, tunnels, special effects, and a musical score by "Incredibles 2" composer Michael Giacchino, according to Disney.

Disney World will let you book a ride a week in advance — if you stay at one of its hotels

  • Disney World is replacing its Genie+ service and individual Lightning Lane entry pass.
  • Guests can use the Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass starting July 24.
  • Guests staying at Disney Resort hotels can plan Lightning Lane passes seven days in advance.

Insider Today

Walt Disney World will allow guests to make ride reservations a week in advance — but there's a catch.

The official Disney Parks Blog said the Genie+ service and Lightning Lane entry would be discontinued at the Florida theme parks. Instead, guests can register for two new reservation programs that go into effect on July 24.

"Walt Disney World will introduce new, simpler names to provide more clarity for everyone," a press release published Tuesday read. "Disney Genie+ service will become Lightning Lane Multi Pass, while individual Lightning Lane will now be known as Lightning Lane Single Pass."

The new passes let guests make Lightning Lane reservations ahead of their trip, but the biggest perk is for those who book at Disney Resorts and affiliated hotels.

"Guests staying at a Disney Resort hotel and other select hotels will be able to plan Lightning Lane passes up to 7 days in advance for their entire stay (up to 14 days)," the company said. "All other guests can plan up to 3 days in advance."

The new incentive could encourage some Disney guests to pour even more money into its Florida properties, which could expand under a $17 billion development deal between Disney and the local tourism district.

Related stories

Some guests have criticized Disney's theme parks for being too expensive. Even CEO Bob Iger was shocked by ticket prices when he returned to the company in November 2022.

The price for Lightning Lane Multi Passes will vary by day and theme park, while the Lightning Lane Single Passes will vary by date and attraction.

Despite the cost, some parents with children under 18 are going into debt to finance their family's Disney vacation . Parents who completed Lending Tree's survey indicated that food, transportation, and accommodation wreaked the most havoc on their budgets.

Representatives for Disney referred to the press release and FAQ when contacted for comment.

Unlike the new Lightning Lane passes, Genie+ didn't permit advanced reservations.

Under Genie+, guests could register for Lightning Lane entrances at select rides and experiences, but they needed to wake up at 7 a.m. each day of their trip to secure their spot. This drew criticism from some Disney guests, who suggested that the Genie+ program is complicated and overwhelming.

The company said guests voiced their desire for a more comprehensive reservation program, which led them to create the Lightning Lane passes.

"We enjoy hearing from guests about all the things they love, as well as how we can make their experience even better the next time," the press release read. "At Walt Disney World, guests have told us they would prefer to have the option to do more of their planning before their theme park day."
