This qualitative phenomenological study aims to understand and provide contextual explanation on the meaning behind the communicative action of YouTube vlogging as located in the essence of experience of the OG Filipino vlogger voice. The bracketing used is an in-depth interview, and the participant is Lincoln Velasquez, more popularly known as Cong TV, one of the top 10 individual vloggers in the Philippines (his channel having >7 million subscribers), and also one of the earliest to start in 2008, several years before vlogging became commercially lucrative in 2016. The analysis is conducted by coding, categorizing, and interpreting the interview transcript, from which 13 sub-themes emerge. By conceptually connecting the sub-themes, the grand theme of vlogging as access to possibilities is surfaced. Through an initial linkage to Sen’s capability approach, a further theoretical abstraction of the grand theme to vlogging as expansion of capabilities is tentatively proposed.

As the English language continues to evolve through time, many of its structures and functions changed, which made it even realizable that the smallest unit in a discourse can play a crucial role in communication. Hence, this present study is an attempt to investigate the phenomenon and further delve into the discourse-pragmatic functions of discourse particles (DPs) in digital genres, particularly on Facebook, since DPs are commonly used by Filipino youths when posting and commenting online. Thirty tertiary-level students from different universities in Metro Manila, Philippines, were selected to participate in the present study. Using both qualitative and quasi-quantitative methods, results revealed a surprising number and interesting types of combined English and Filipino Relational DPs having several micro functions. Generally, they serve as a device that can let the interlocutors convey their emotions, relationships, and attitudes towards the receiver of their message. Discourse particles have crucial and prominent implications in the way Filipinos, particularly the youth, express their message, gain understanding of the received message, and establish speaker-receiver relationships and attitude on Facebook.

Over the past years, the video-sharing platform Youtube’s significance has increased drastically. Not only music and movie trailers have made their way onto the website, but recently also news content is widely being uploaded and shared. As the Pew Research Center’s Journalism Project Staff puts it in their empirical study on Youtube as a news platform, the website can be seen as a source of “a new kind of visual news” (Pew Research Center’s Journalism Project Staff, “A New Kind of Visual News”). The video which is to be closely examined in this term paper is a short twominute piece by ENTV, an entertainment news channel exclusive to Youtube. The goal of this paper is to examine the language employed in the video’s speech part, concentrating on structure, lexicon, and intonation. This close observation of the material will be based on a brief description of Youtube’s development as a news platform and Adam Bell’s article “Language and the Media”.

The potential for computer-supported learning in educational contexts has opened up the possibilities for learners to interact in informal contexts outside the classroom. The context of the present research is a young American individual's vlog on YouTube sharing his experiences as a learner of French. This paper focuses on the potential use of vlogs for developing language speaking skills and intercultural exchanges between users. The aim of the study is to describe and analyse informal learning communication using a vlog between one American French Language learner posting his learning experiences on YouTube and his audience. We highlight learner's opportunities in terms of speaking and intercultural skills in a vlog environment. This study is based on an empirical method of collecting ecological data on the web. The qualitative data analysis method is based on the description of the online conversation (Develotte, Kern, & Lamy, 2011) in addition to interaction analysis and technodiscursive analysis (Paveau, 2015). We discuss the qualitative findings of the research conducted on this multimodal corpus in order to highlight the vlog's potential for supporting informal language learning, speaking and intercultural exchanges between YouTube users in a globalised world.

The method used in this research is to use qualitative descriptive research methods. This qualitative descriptive study was chosen based on the object of research, namely replying to the rhyme or what the Bangka people know as pantun besaot. The Data and data sources in this study are a collection of virtual world rhymes, namely on the social media Facebook. The taken rhymes are as many as six which began to be uploaded by the chanters. The data in this study were collected using document analysis techniques, while the data analysis technique used in this study was content analysis. Based on the results of the research that has been done, data of six pantun besaot in the KBB (Bangkek Language Community) group on the Facebook page were obtained which were then analyzed using the Dell Hyems theory.SPEAKING MODEL.The results show that each pantun besaot that has been analyzed using the SPEAKING MODEL shows the identity and characteristics of the Bangka Malay pantun.

This research is aimed to study the contemporary trends of VLogging in Pakistan in light of audience engagement. Using the quantitative content analysis approach, the themes of the most popular VLog channels and video blogs were to be determined. The sample is selected with Purposive Sampling Techniques, which allowed the researchers to study the fifty most popular VLogs produced by Pakistani VLoggers. This research study proved to be significant in understanding the ongoing impact of VLogs as a medium in Pakistan and its future scope in the country's multifaceted media industry. With such results, it is to be determined whether VLogs can be used to effectively disseminate the information and, if they can, in what direction they are creating the most impact.

Vlogs (video blogs) are shaping tourism experiences and destination brands while COVID-19 continues to change the ways we view and experience the contemporary world. The romantic and collective gaze of travel vloggers (video bloggers) on a destination is immediately mediatized through the internet and mobile technology, which makes the vloggers’ narratives a rich resource of insights for creating better tourist experiences. Anchored in Urry’s ( The tourist gaze . Sage Publications Ltd., 2002) tourist gaze, this study examines popular foreign travel vloggers’ perceptions of the Philippines during the first 4 months of quarantine in the country. It explores their experiences, how they coped with their situation, and their images of Filipinos and the Philippines, that they have presented in their vlogs. The analysis revealed five dominant themes, namely: Quarantine Experience and Protocols, Incomparable Sites, Filipino Qualities, Food Experience, and Philippines as (Second) Home. The themes suggested that stranded foreign vloggers held a positive view of the Philippines and Filipinos despite being stranded.

What Solar Eclipse-Gazing Has Looked Like for the Past 2 Centuries

Millions of people on Monday will continue the tradition of experiencing and capturing solar eclipses, a pursuit that has spawned a lot of unusual gear.

For centuries, people have been clamoring to glimpse solar eclipses. From astronomers with custom-built photographic equipment to groups huddled together with special glasses, this spectacle has captivated the human imagination.

Creating a Permanent Record

In 1860, Warren de la Rue captured what many sources describe as the first photograph of a total solar eclipse . He took it in Rivabellosa, Spain, with an instrument known as the Kew Photoheliograph . This combination of a telescope and camera was specifically built to photograph the sun.

Forty years later, Nevil Maskelyne, a magician and an astronomy enthusiast, filmed a total solar eclipse in North Carolina. The footage was lost, however, and only released in 2019 after it was rediscovered in the Royal Astronomical Society’s archives.

Telescopic Vision

For scientists and astronomers, eclipses provide an opportunity not only to view the moon’s umbra and gaze at the sun’s corona, but also to make observations that further their studies. Many observatories, or friendly neighbors with a telescope, also make their instruments available to the public during eclipses.

Fredrik Hjalmar Johansen, Fridtjof Nansen and Sigurd Scott Hansen observing a solar eclipse while on a polar expedition in 1894 .

Women from Wellesley College in Massachusetts and their professor tested out equipment ahead of their eclipse trip (to “catch old Sol in the act,” as the original New York Times article phrased it) to New London, Conn., in 1922.

A group from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania traveled to Yerbaniz, Mexico, in 1923, with telescopes and a 65-foot camera to observe the sun’s corona .

Dr. J.J. Nassau, director of the Warner and Swasey Observatory at Case School of Applied Science in Cleveland, prepared to head to Douglas Hill, Maine, to study an eclipse in 1932. An entire freight car was required to transport the institution’s equipment.

Visitors viewed a solar eclipse at an observatory in Berlin in the mid-1930s.

A family set up two telescopes in Bar Harbor, Maine, in 1963. The two children placed stones on the base to help steady them.

An astronomer examined equipment for an eclipse in a desert in Mauritania in June 1973. We credit the hot climate for his choice in outfit.

Indirect Light

If you see people on Monday sprinting to your local park clutching pieces of paper, or with a cardboard box of their head, they are probably planning to reflect or project images of the solar eclipse onto a surface.

Cynthia Goulakos demonstrated a safe way to view a solar eclipse , with two pieces of cardboard to create a reflection of the shadowed sun, in Lowell, Mass., in 1970.

Another popular option is to create a pinhole camera. This woman did so in Central Park in 1963 by using a paper cup with a small hole in the bottom and a twin-lens reflex camera.

Amateur astronomers viewed a partial eclipse, projected from a telescope onto a screen, from atop the Empire State Building in 1967 .

Back in Central Park, in 1970, Irving Schwartz and his wife reflected an eclipse onto a piece of paper by holding binoculars on the edge of a garbage basket.

Children in Denver in 1979 used cardboard viewing boxes and pieces of paper with small pinholes to view projections of a partial eclipse.

A crowd gathered around a basin of water dyed with dark ink, waiting for the reflection of a solar eclipse to appear, in Hanoi, Vietnam, in 1995.

Staring at the Sun (or, How Not to Burn Your Retinas)

Eclipse-gazers have used different methods to protect their eyes throughout the years, some safer than others .

In 1927, women gathered at a window in a building in London to watch a total eclipse through smoked glass. This was popularized in France in the 1700s , but fell out of favor when physicians began writing papers on children whose vision was damaged.

Another trend was to use a strip of exposed photographic film, as seen below in Sydney, Australia, in 1948 and in Turkana, Kenya, in 1963. This method, which was even suggested by The Times in 1979 , has since been declared unsafe.

Solar eclipse glasses are a popular and safe way to view the event ( if you use models compliant with international safety standards ). Over the years there have been various styles, including these large hand-held options found in West Palm Beach, Fla., in 1979.

Parents and children watched a partial eclipse through their eclipse glasses in Tokyo in 1981.

Slimmer, more colorful options were used in Nabusimake, Colombia, in 1998.

In France in 1999.

And in Iran and England in 1999.

And the best way to see the eclipse? With family and friends at a watch party, like this one in Isalo National Park in Madagascar in 2001.
