For example, when delivering bad news, such as a terminal illness diagnosis, it is crucial to consider the emotional well-being of the recipient. While honesty should be prioritised, the delivery of information must be done with sensitivity.

Furthermore, maintaining trust in a relationship involves more than just truthfulness. In some cases, withholding the truth may be necessary to protect the well-being of the other person or the relationship itself. If, for instance, someone asks you about a new hairstyle they have, it could be damaging to the relationship to tell them you do not like it, so a white lie may be the best option to avoid hurting them. Thus factors such as respect, empathy, and understanding also contribute significantly.

The mock essay below addresses the very common Agree/Disagree task type. As you read through, think about how it fully meets the task requirement by giving a clear opinion; presenting a number of relevant ideas; and how it maintains an advanced level of vocabulary with frequent higher-level, less common terms (fundamental, critical, allowance, implications, acknowledged, anticipated etc). Over-repetition of key terms is avoided (see how we substitute honest/honesty for truth in places), and there are a number of collocations (basic requirement, smooth functioning, delivery date, thought-provoking, general rule etc) which an examiner would note in awarding a high score.

Remember how the To what extent…. wording always gives us the option to take a position along the Scale of Agreement other than completely Agree/Disagree at the extremes. In this case, our position could be summarised as Mostly Disagree.

There is also a variety of grammar forms, with frequent longer, complex sentences, but inclusion of some shorter, simple structures too, e.g This was not always done in the past.

Note too the use of passive verb forms (need to be able, are expected, may be seen etc) through several parts of the text.

The essay is structured here in a five-paragraph format as follows:

Introduction: paraphrasing the topic and question; giving a clear opinion. 1st Body Paragraph: presenting the Agree side of the issue, with an example. 2nd Body Paragraph: extending the Agree argument with a further example.

3rd Body Paragraph: presenting the other side of the issue with examples in the form of rhetorical questions. Conclusion: reinforcing the author’s opinion as stated in the Introduction.

Fundamental honesty between people is a basic requirement for a functioning society. Whether this means that always being truthful in any relationship is the most critical consideration, however, is debatable. There are some occasions when this may actually cause more harm than good.

On the one hand, people need to be able to rely on basic facts. In many relationships such as in business and dealing with officialdom, we expect that others will tell us truthfully what we need to know. For example, if we are someone’s business customer, we must be able to rely on the promised delivery date of materials as this affects the smooth functioning of our own business and our relationships with our own clients. If there is a problem, we need our supplier to be honest and tell us, in order to make allowance in some way for late delivery, or source from an alternative supplier.

As another example, consider how doctors are expected to tell patients of the full implications of a serious health condition. This was not always done in the past,. Now, though, it is generally acknowledged to be much better for people to fully understand their situation and the possible options for treatments and anticipated outcomes.

Nevertheless, there are situations, especially between friends and romantic partners where a ‘white lie’ can spare the other’s feelings. If a friend strongly urges us to see a movie which they thought was excellent, would we really say after we saw it that it was terrible, or would we instead say it was perhaps interesting or thought-provoking? IELTS Speaking: Telling the truth…

The question.

The first thing to understand is that the IELTS Speaking test is not a normal conversation. You are not there to exchange information socially, or to get to know the examiner. Your sole objective is to show how well you can speak English. As soon as you realise this, it becomes obvious that each question you are asked is an opportunity to show them what you know. To take advantage of those opportunities, here is how you can plan your answers in advance.

Let’s look at possible answers to a simple question that you might get in Part 1: ‘Where do you live?’

• ‘In Dubai.’ This may be true, and after all, it does answer the question. But it doesn’t give the examiner any clue about your English level, so you will not score any points.
• ‘I’m currently renting an apartment here in Dubai. The district I live in is about 10 minutes from the business area. I like it there because…’ This answer shows you understand the question, you have a varied vocabulary and you can talk about this topic comfortably. This answer may or may not be true — who cares? The important thing is that you have taken the opportunity to display your level of English.

There are several topics for Speaking Part 1 that are quite predictable (home, family, job, hobbies, etc.). Prepare some phrases and expressions, like the ones above, that you can use when talking about them.

In Part 2 you will get a topic card with three prompts. For example, you might be asked to describe a close friend, and to state:

• when you met them
• what you have in common
• why they are so special to you

These prompts (which always follow the same format) allow you to prepare a structure for your answer. So, for example, you can decide to make three points for each prompt:

Structuring your answer in this way not only allows you to prepare useful language in advance, it also makes your answer more coherent and easier to follow. Part 2 is one section you can really practise and improve your fluency with.

In Part 3, you will be asked questions about the topic, following up on your short talk. Here again, you can learn these expressions which can be used in an answer to almost any question:

• ‘Yes, I’ve often thought about that…’
• ‘That’s a big question today…’
• ‘Yes, just the other day I was reading an article about that…’

This functional language sounds impressive, and it also gives you a little extra time to work out what you are going to say. (That’s why native speakers use these expressions and they can help develop your speaking style .)

Be careful!

Learning phrases and expressions like these is useful, just like learning standard phrases for emails (‘Thank you for your prompt reply’) or for essays (‘It could be argued that…’). However, it does not mean you should be preparing complete answers and learning them by heart. These examples are to help you structure your answer while still sounding natural.

Speaking is not like writing — we speak with shorter, less complex vocabulary and sentences. It is okay to stumble or make mistakes , as long as you are able to fix them. Examiners are trained to spot scripted answers, and if they detect you doing it, you will get no marks at all.

IELTS Speaking Model Answer – Tell the Truth

Ielts speaking part 2 - cue card, describe a time someone didn’t tell you the truth about something.

You should say:

• When it happened
• Who the person was 
• Why they didn’t tell the truth

and explain how you felt about the situation.

In this question, we could talk about…

• family member,  
• someone at work,  
• government office (where you are applying for something),  
• bank employee
• complaining about something you bought (in a shop, restaurant, online…)

Not telling the truth could be…  

• Telling a lie  
• Telling a white lie or telling a fib (often to protect someone, e.g. ‘Mmmm, yes the cake you made is lovely’ )
• Exaggerating
• Not lying, but not telling you everything  

How to use this sample answer

• Close your eyes and listen
• Listen again, pause and repeat short phrases.
• Listen again and shadow ( say the words at the same time but without pausing )
• Listen again and read
• Note useful words, chunks and phrase

2. SAMPLE ANSWER

Click arrow to read script Several years ago, I was in one of those big shopping malls which is more like a market, where they sell nothing but IT equipment.

I was after a new adaptor for my new phone, and I came across this one store where they had a sale on.

So, I asked about the adaptors and the guy behind the counter showed me this nifty , what he called ‘state of the art’ adaptor that apparently works on all phones.

So, I asked if it would work on my Samsung model and he said yeah, of course.

Unfortunately, I had forgotten to bring my phone, so I couldn’t try it.

Well, the sales assistant was very confident, and dismissed any questions with a wave of the hand – saying it will work, I guarantee you, I stake my life on it.

So I took a chance and thought it would be fine.

It turns out though, that it didn’t fit.

Now, my first reaction was that he had blatantly lied to me , just to make a sale.

Naturally, I was a little annoyed, but then I thought, maybe he had just made a mistake.

Mind you, maybe, I was being too forgiving.

In any case , I went back the next day, and complained.

He actually seemed genuinely surprised that it didn’t work, but as I had a receipt, he let me change it for another one and reimbursed me with the price difference.

So it worked out well in the end.

TOEFL Essay 2 – Telling the truth

TOEFL – Quick Essay Analysis

Here is a sample essay for TOEFL Writing (Independent Essay). It is a topic about an abstract concept -a moral value, so candidates need to think about this carefully. An analysis of the question shows that the essay required appears to be one of ‘agree/disagree’ so this essay is essentially argumentative. In this sample, the author has chosen to disagree that truthfulness is no longer necessary today. The author’s stand is implied in the first paragraph, without the express use of the word ‘disagree’ but nonetheless, the author’s stand is clear. Three main points were put forth to support the author’s stand.

Sample Topic/Question

Truthfulness is a virtue that is held in high regard in many societies. However, modern life sometimes presents situations where it is better not to tell the truth. Do you agree or disagree that the truth is not always necessary and that sometimes it is even better not to be truthful? Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.

Sample Answer:

As we have evolved as a society, some people contend that often, the line between truth and untruth has been blurred. The question is whether it is still necessary to be truthful all the time. My personal view is that truthfulness is still very much needed and the proverbial grey area is nothing but a convenient excuse created by the liars in our society.

The most important reason for us to be truthful is to uphold and maintain our integrity. A truthful person is someone dependable who can be relied on to present things honestly. The old adage, ‘Honesty is the best policy’, still applies today. If someone is honest, it means that others can put their trust in that person and this trust is often translated into favorable reviews which are worth far more than gold.

Those who argue that it is acceptable to tell white lies may present a convincing case at first, but a lie is still a lie, regardless of the intention of the lie. In the long run, telling the truth will always be for the greater good. For instance, when a woman asks, ‘How do I look?’, some people may be tempted to tell a white lie and tell her that she looks good even though the opposite may be the case. I personally think that it is better to tell the woman the truth from the onset rather than spare her feelings now but allow her to be laughed at by someone else later.

Another simple reason to tell the truth is that it is far less stressful than having to keep up the pretense that comes with lies. Often, one lie will lead to another one and soon, the liar will find that it is quite stressful trying to keep up with the web of lies. Living with the fear of being found out can take its toll on any person.

In conclusion, there are some universal values which will never erode with time and truthfulness is one of them. Truth will prevail over lies at any time in any situation, and if everyone were to understand this basic principle, the world will be a better place to live in.
