mother of the bride speech

WHY IS A DAUGHTER OF THE BRIDE SPEECH SPECIAL?

The years have no doubt been filled with ups and downs, more than a few squabbles, and a lot of love. You don’t get much closer than a mother-daughter relationship. Whatever the age of the daughter, it’s important she gives the marriage her blessing.

If you’re an adult daughter, a speech is your opportunity to pay a loving tribute to your mum as she starts this new adventure. Of course, it’s also an opportunity to get her back for those years of nagging, and tease her affectionately!

Since you know your mum better than most people, you’re uniquely placed to give her partner advice on how to successfully co-habit with her ( ‘DON’T try to communicate with her before 10am and at least two cups of coffee, DO remember to notice her new hairdo, even when she’s just had an inch off’ ).

If you’re a mum wanting to make your young daughter feel important and valued at your wedding, a speech will definitely contribute something rather special.

Whether it’s your teenager reading a sentimental poem or your six-year-old giving her bespoke relationship advice, it will add a sweet and memorable moment to the day.

THE ADULT DAUGHTER

As a proper grown-up (regressive behaviour when you go home for Christmas notwithstanding), you officially no longer have the cute factor to hide behind. This means you’re going to be expected to come up with a pretty decent speech.

Funnily enough, you’re essentially taking on the father of the bride role, but instead of recounting anecdotes about your mum as a child, you’ll be telling them from the child’s point of view! You can find everything you need to know about your speech structure and etiquette on our Father Advice Page.

The secret to a perfect speech is balance – you’ll obviously want to pay tribute to your lovely mum but remember to sincerely welcome her new partner to the family. Honouring the relationship you and your mum have + making sure you celebrate her new marriage = happy wedding vibes!

If you’re first on the speaker line-up, well done for being brave and taking one for the team. It’s your job to welcome all the guests, but keep this part short and avoid stealing any of the newlywed’s thunder. Your mission is to win some belly-laughs and perhaps inspire a few sentimental tears towards the end.

THE YOUNG DAUGHTER

No one is expecting a long, personalised speech from a little one. Something short and sweet will get a few ‘awws’ and some affectionate laughter.

Keeping it simple often creates more impact. A poem is ideal – there are plenty of funny wedding poems available to exploit!

It’s also perfectly acceptable to read a short segment from a children’s book. This can add a wonderful dose of humour when applied to real-life adults. Here are some wedding readings from children’s books we like.

If you want to aim for something bespoke, ask your daughter to write a few lines about what she thinks love means or what’s important for a happy marriage. Guests love it when kids blurt out hilariously ingenious statements, not least because they can be unexpectedly insightful! Out of the mouths of babes…

If your little one wants to get involved but is too shy to go it alone, invite her to join you for a part of your speech, or get her holding up funny prompt cards to maybe ‘heckle’ the groom as he gives his, e.g. a series of phrases, such as  ‘He’s fibbing’ , ‘That’s not how I remember it’, ‘Does anyone believe this rubbish?’ etc.

A contribution, however small, from your little girl, will add some good-natured humour to the speeches and make her feel central to the day.

THE TEENAGE DAUGHTER

Many teens cringe at reading anything too soppy, so look for something more humorous than emotional. Here are a few of our favourite funny wedding poems.

The older your daughter, the more likely it is she’ll be able to prepare the speech herself, or perhaps work with a writing team like us to craft something really special. We once worked with a 15-year-old who used Star Wars quotes to define what love really means at his mum’s wedding! Guests will be charmed by a teenager’s ‘unique’ perspective on matters of the heart.

Aim for a speech length of no more than five minutes – every speech is funnier and more memorable when it’s cut right back. It may be wise to get an adult to check out the speech before it’s delivered – in fact, we highly recommend your teenager rehearse it out loud a couple of times before the big day.

Bear in mind that many public speakers – definitely not just children – freeze when faced with a room full of expectant faces. If this happens to your daughter, try not to pressure her to continue. Hopefully, she’ll decide to do it later, once she sees how fun it is watching others earn their laughs.

Nothing involving children ever goes exactly to plan, but this is totally ok – go with the flow and learn to laugh at whatever happens!

Most people would agree that public speaking isn't easy, and this is especially true when you're feeling the added pressure that comes along with giving a speech at a loved one's wedding. Not only do you have the attention of dozens (if not hundreds!) of guests you probably don't know, but you're also trying to appeal to a group of people in a wide range of ages from all different phases of the couple's lives. What's more, you want your speech to delight the couple of the hour and be as appealing to your group of friends as it to the newlyweds' grandparents. All in all, it's a tough task.

Before you panic, know that we're here to help. Ahead, we're sharing a comprehensive guide on what you should include in your speech , how to nail your delivery, and questions to consider to get the brainstorming process started—all from noteworthy speakers, well-established speechwriters, and wedding planners (who have seen it all).

Wedding Speech Template

Every great wedding speech has one thing in common: the right flow. Factor in these guidelines to help you find your own organic rhythm.

Open With a Statement or Question

Don't lead with a joke or a reference to how nervous you are. "The goal is to engage your audience, not make it a boring one-way message," says award-winning motivational speaker Jaime Pfeffer . "You'll lose them if you do this."

Introduce Yourself

After your opener, introduce yourself, says Fallon Carter , a wedding planner, even designer, and professional speaker. "A lot of times, people don't know who is speaking, and they don't know their relationship to the bride or the groom," she says. "It's really important to identify yourself, so make sure you've prepared something."

Address Your Audience

As speaker and life strategy coach Mark Black, CSP , points out, focusing on yourself only enhances nerves. "Instead, concentrate on your audience and how you want them to feel. This will help you to speak from the heart, allowing your speech to do what it's supposed to do: Make the couple feel special while also engaging the audience."

Focus on a Few Points

Seasoned speaker Susan Bender Phelps, CEO of Odyssey Mentoring & Leadership , says her top guideline is to select one to three aspects of the newlyweds that you love and appreciate, along with no more than three short stories to illustrate each of these points (or that one point). "The simple, succinct story or stories where the bride and groom are the hero will work best." This is an excellent way to structure your speech and keep your message focused.

How Long Wedding Speeches Should Be

The ideal length for a speech is three to five minutes, with five minutes being the absolute maximum you should speak for. That's it. "I’ve never been to a wedding where anyone said, 'That was a great wedding, but the best man speech was just too short and that  ruined  it,'" says David Litt , the speechwriter for former President Barack Obama and author of Thanks, Obama .

Carter agrees: "I always say anywhere between two and five minutes—and no more than five minutes," she says. "You want to keep things short and sweet." It's just as important to keep in mind when the speech will take place when determining length, since toasts are often timed with meal courses: "Be mindful of how long a course generally takes or how long it takes people to eat," Carter adds, noting that most courses last between 15 and 20 minutes and that several speeches have to fit inside each window. "If there are other people speaking, you want to be mindful and give them space."

Wedding Speech Tips

Now that you've established the right framework for your words, take note of these essential tips for acing the delivery from a few speaking pros.

Rehearse Regularly

The better prepared you are, the more confident you'll be and the better your speech will be, says author and professional speaker Barry Maher . A good rule of thumb is to practice the speech enough that you can remember the points you want to make and the order in which you want to make them. That way, you can look out to the crowd and make eye contact every so often.

Record Yourself Practicing

Use your phone to take a video of yourself practicing, suggests Kate Kenfield , speaker and sex educator. "It can be a little uncomfortable to watch yourself, but you'll be able to identify distracting mannerisms, such as the verbal pauses 'um,' 'uh,' and 'like'." It's also a good idea to practice your speech in front of someone else. "A second opinion can help you craft your piece and make it that much stronger," she says.

Don't forget body language! Rehearse the speech in front of a mirror and notice things like your facial expression, eye contact, and hand position.

Avoid Alcohol

Although it may be tempting to look for some liquid courage, alcohol definitely won't do you any favors, warns keynote speaker Amy Morin , author of 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do . "It may cause you to slur your speech and forget your lines, so wait until after your toast to celebrate," she advises. If you need a drink to loosen up the nerves or can't refrain from participating in a toast without being rude, stick to one glass of Champagne before you address the crowd.

Use Nerves to Your Advantage

A little nervousness can actually liven up your speech. "I get worried if I'm not a little nervous," says Maher. "I'll actually try to make myself a little tense to get my energy level up." The key is to harness that energy and communicate it in a positive, genuine way; tensing up to the point that you forget your words or panic won't make for a great presentation.

Be Yourself

Keep in mind that you're not putting on a show, only sharing your personal perspective. Trying too hard to force the funny can yield the opposite of the desired effect, cautions Matt Dalley, co-founder of Simply Eloped . "I've noticed that keeping it short and sweet, heartfelt and warm, and coming across as authentic and focused on the couple is something we are all capable of and generates some very wonderful moments," he says.

Never Embarrass the Newlyweds

It's a wedding toast, not a roast. While this should go without saying, keep the bachelor or bachelorette party jokes out of it, and remember that grandma and possibly a few colleagues are in the audience, notes Laurie Battaglia , a keynote speaker and workplace strategist. "It's okay to look back at childhood and refer to something funny, but ask yourself if you'd like 200-plus of your closest friends knowing that story about you."

Use Your Notes

Reading your speech straight from a piece of paper is a big no-no. However, having a couple of note cards handy is encouraged. "You're likely to be nervous, excited, and exhausted, which can make you forget your lines," explains Morin. "The audience won't care if you glance at your notes. In fact, there's a good chance they won't even notice."

Wedding Speech Brainstorm Ideas

Need some inspiration? Ask yourself these questions to get the brainstorming process going.

  • Who will speak before you? After you? How will this affect the content of your toast? (Perhaps you want to include a reference to their speech, thank them for an introduction, or introduce the next speaker).
  • Is there someone you should thank for making the event possible and inviting you to speak?
  • What would you want to hear in this speech if you were in the audience?
  • Is there a favorite story or memory that the couple would want you to share with their friends and family?

Wedding Speech Examples to Make Your Own

So, what does it look like when all these elements come together? Wedding vow and speechwriter Katelyn Peterson , owner and creator of Wedding Words , offered us three examples of successful toasts to inspire your own.

Maid of Honor Wedding Speech Example

"Hi, I’m Maya, the bride’s older sister . With Lucy being three years younger, we fell right into our respective roles as sister-rivals growing up. We constantly fought over stolen clothes, monopolizing the phone back when landlines were a thing, and what boy band to blare from the car speakers. I’m still Team Backstreet Boys while Lucy is forever indebted to NSYNC.

Looking back on those memories, I should have stepped up and granted Lucy permission to wear my favorite sweater for picture day, to hand her the phone once in a while, and to let her play, 'Bye Bye Bye.' Even I can admit that’s a good one. But despite Lucy being the younger sister, she has always been more patient, more accommodating, and more thoughtful than me. And that’s because when it comes to the people she loves, she’s all in.

She’s the one to prioritize their desires. She’s the one to compromise first. And, she’s the one to support their dreams as if they were her own.

This is why it makes me so happy to know that Lucy has found a home in David. He matches her in compassion, thoughtfulness, and warmth. And I know he’ll spend his life prioritizing her desires, being ready to compromise, and supporting her dreams as his own.

Cheers to Lucy and David! May you always feel loved because you always put each other first."

Best Man Wedding Speech Example

"Hello, everyone. My name is Luke and I’m the best man . I met Robert eight years ago when I became his neighbor. His reputation preceded him as I had heard about the 'Block Party King' before my closing papers were inked.

Rob has never been the guy to wear fancy clothes. In fact, I’m still in shock seeing him in that tux tonight. And he’s never been the guy to show off even though the work he’s put into his vintage Mustang could make Henry Ford himself envious.

But when it comes to cooking, he should receive an award. His pulled pork is a staple at our summer block parties and his homemade barbeque sauce has remained our neighborhood’s best-kept secret. But the most satisfying part about his delicious dishes is that there’s always plenty to go around. And Rob makes sure your plate is never empty. I have no idea how he pulls it off, but Rob has a covert ability to scoop seconds onto your plate without you ever seeing him do it. I hope you all came hungry tonight, folks. You’ve been warned!

The first time I met Jasmine I could immediately tell she was an amazing person. She laughed at his jokes which I never thought anyone would get. She supported his career and the nonstop travel involved. But most importantly, whenever we’re all hanging out, Jasmine is the one always topping off Rob’s plate with more pasta, more chicken, more of everything. When she’s around, it’s never empty.

And that’s when I saw what a perfect match they were for each other. I know they will always put each other first, make sure their needs are met, and will never allow the other to go hungry.

So let’s raise our glasses to toast the newlyweds! As you begin this next chapter together, may your plates and your hearts always remain full."

Father of the Bride Wedding Speech Example

"Good evening, family, and friends. I’m Daniel Lee, the father of the bride. I’d like to welcome you to this special occasion where we get to celebrate the love between my daughter Allison and her new wife, Kristin.

Standing up here today, I’m reminded of all the moments that led to this significant one. The dance recitals that ended with standing ovations and the soccer games that concluded with winning scoreboards.

But, while those were fun and rewarding times, those aren’t the moments I cherish most with Allison. The memories that make me smile the brightest are those in-between the big stuff moments. It’s the makeshift magic shows in our living room using a bedsheet that Allison confiscated from our linen closet to convert into a curtain. It’s the countless tea parties she hosted with exclusive invitations just for me and her beloved stuffed bear, Buttons. And it’s the way she’d beg to stay up for just five more minutes but was asleep on the couch by minute number two.

Those everyday, blink-and-you’ll-miss-them moments with Allison are the ones that gave color to my life and filled my heart with a happiness I never knew could exist.

So, my beautiful daughter, as you begin your life with Kristin today, I have one wish for you: May your warmest memories come from the ordinary moments throughout your marriage, and may those moments give you a reason to smile brighter every day. Cheers! I love you both." —Daniel

What Not to Say in a Wedding Speech

Your job when delivering a wedding speech is to keep things light—tell an anecdote, make an emotional connection, then wish the couple well before you close out. Anything that doesn't feel definitively positive should be avoided. "I would advocate against bringing up negative details, specifically past relationships or past spouses," says Carter. "Skip anything that you wouldn't want to be physically recorded and played over and over again—this is a rule of thumb."

Keep it light, delicate, and present- and future-focused, Carter adds. "If you're going to go into the past, make those stories really intentional," she says. "Bring those stories back to who they are now. Your mission is to create a great environment and vibe and to potentially give some information about one of the newlyweds, so that it's enlightening for all guests."

For most people, their wedding day will be among the most important days of their lives. As such, it is customary for a close friend or loved one to deliver a speech congratulating the newlyweds on their union. This can be a nerve-wracking prospect if you’re the one called upon to give a speech in front of a big, expectant crowd. As the speechwriter, it will pay off to make sure that you’re organized, keep it concise and practice extensively beforehand.

Things You Should Know

Professional wedding planner Jenny Yi says the wedding speech should be “impactful, short, and sweet.” Explain how you know the bride and groom, share a quick backstory on how they met, then wish them well as a couple.

Sample Speeches

Writing a Meaningful Speech

Step 1 Introduce yourself to the crowd.

  • The best man and maid of honor are usually each asked to make a short speech on behalf of the wedding party. After that, the microphone is sometimes turned over to whoever would like to say a few words.
  • Saying your name and briefly summarizing your history with the bride or groom will be enough. Don’t talk about yourself too much. Remember, the focus of your speech is the married couple.

Step 2 Open with a joke.

  • Use jokes judiciously to break the initial tension and keep the crowd relaxed. Try not to let your speech turn into a stand up comedy routine.
  • Keep your humorous stories and remarks appropriate. There will be people of all ages in your audience, including children.
  • Funny stories might include a funny story about the bride and groom's meeting, or an anecdote about one of them as a child.

Step 3 Share memories of the bride and groom.

  • Sharing unique memories or stories is much more effective than simply complimenting the bride or groom because it is a more personal touch.

Step 4 Offer advice or well-wishes for the future.

  • If you decide to use a quote for this segment of the speech, make sure it is short, relevant and not a cliche.

Step 5 Thank everyone in attendance.

  • Acknowledging the people who helped make the wedding festivities possible will make you appear humble, as well as making them feel appreciated.
  • Express your gratitude in a couple sentences. There’s no need to go on and on thanking every person individually by name.

Making Sure You're Prepared

Step 1 Write the speech well in advance.

  • Treat your speech like you would a school assignment. Compose several drafts, check it for errors and have a friend proofread it to make sure it sounds good.

Step 2 Know when you’re expect to deliver the speech.

  • Familiarize yourself with the order of presentation if multiple speeches are to be given.
  • Don’t spend the entire ceremony fretting over your speech. If you’re sufficiently prepared, you won’t need to give it a second thought until it’s time for you to deliver it.

Step 3 Practice, practice, practice.

  • Know your speech word for word, but try not to sound like you’re simply reciting it from memory. Pace yourself and give every passage emphasis, emotion and clarity.

Step 4 Bring your notes with you.

  • Put your entire speech on a couple note cards rather than a several large sheets of paper. Not only will this look better, it will help you keep your speech at the appropriate length.
  • Only look at your notes if you draw a blank or forget the next part. This will allow you to keep your eyes up and engage your audience. Even the most riveting speech will be a bore if the person giving it is reading off a note card the whole time.

Giving the Speech

Step 1 Maintain your composure.

  • Take a few slow, deep breaths. Think about what you’re saying and shut out all other distractions. Imagine that you’re giving your speech to one person instead of a room full of people.
  • Have a drink or two if it helps your nerves. Just don’t have too many—you want to be focused and clear-headed when it’s time for you to take the floor.

Step 2 Keep it short and sweet.

  • It’s perfectly okay to give a short speech. Simply say a few kind words, raise a toast and hand back the microphone.
  • Speak slowly and deliberately. It’s easy to start chattering too fast when you’re nervous. By talking slower than you feel like you need to, you’ll probably be going at just the right speed.
  • People who are underprepared or extremely anxious tend to talk aimlessly. Avoid this by sticking to what you’ve written and look to the crowd for cues about when their attention is evaporating.

Step 3 Be sincere.

  • Take a moment to speak to the bride and/or groom directly.
  • It’s normal to get a little choked up! As long as you can finish your speech, there’s no need to worry. It may even be flattering, as it will show the people you’re talking about how much you truly care.

Step 4 Finish with a toast.

  • It’s customary for the best man or groomsmen to toast the bride, and the maid of honor to toast the groom.

Engagement Speech for My Daughter (8 Examples from the Heart)

  • by Marisa Jenkins
  • April 6, 2024

The news of your daughter’s engagement will surely bring about a whirlwind of emotions. If the newly engaged couple will host a party , one of the most moving moments for any parent is delivering a speech.

However, words are not everyone’s strong suit. As a parent, you might find yourself asking, “How can I write an engagement speech for my daughter?”

Engagement party speeches are heartfelt narratives that weave the past, present, and future together. You can include anecdotes from your daughter’s childhood, observations about her relationship, and advice and well wishes for their future.

Below are eight examples of speeches at a daughter’s engagement party, followed by a guide on how to write your own speech.

Engagement Speeches for My Daughter: Stunning Examples

Engagement Speech for My Daughter from Father

Now, as you prepare to embark on this journey with Mark, I see a future filled with love, laughter, and happiness.

Mark, we are thrilled to have you in our little family. You have my daughter’s heart, and you have a special place in ours. It’s as clear as day that you make her happy and content. You love her for who she is, and for that, we are grateful beyond words.

As your father, I just want to share a piece of advice. Everyone always says that marriage is like a rollercoaster with ups and downs. While that’s true, nobody talks about how it’s the same for an engagement —there’s bound to be a lot of challenges along the way, but overcoming them is a test of your relationship’s resilience.

Just hold each other’s hands, believe in yourself, and take a deep breath. There’s nothing you won’t get through if you’re together.

So, everyone, let’s raise our glasses in celebration of Kayla and Mark! May your love be modern enough to survive the times but old-fashioned enough to last forever.

And Jim, what can I say? You’re a brave man. You asked me for my daughter’s hand in marriage knowing I have a black belt in Karate and that I’ve watched every episode of ‘Bad Boys’ and have a particular set of skills…

Okay, but in all seriousness, you’ve been fantastic, and I am delighted to officially extend my dad jokes and embarrassing dance moves to you as well. You’re officially my intern in that department now.

All jokes aside for a moment, my heart is so full, knowing my silly yet smart, sometimes lazy but super passionate daughter has found her perfect match in Jim.

Remember, marriage is like a fantastic bottle of wine. It’s an expensive investment, it often starts with someone stomping on something, and it might give you a headache sometimes, but with the right food pairing and the right company, it’ll give you one hell of a time. It gets better with age, too—what’s not to like?

So, let’s raise a glass to the newly engaged couple. Mandy and Jim, may your life be full of love, your love be full of life, and your home always be connected to Wi-Fi. To love, laughter, and the reality that I’m not losing a daughter, but gaining a… well, let’s just stick with love and laughter for now.

Philip, thank you for loving her for who she is and supporting her in what she wants to achieve. You are the reason behind her happiness and optimism for life, and for that, we are truly grateful.

Remember, love isn’t just about finding the right person; it’s about creating the right relationship. Love isn’t just an emotion; it’s a commitment, like a plant you have to nourish every day for it to flourish.

At the end of the day, it’s not about how much love you have in the beginning, but how much love you build along the way.

Today, you’re one step closer to a dream you told us when you were 16: you’ve found your soulmate. You’ve found a partner who respects, cherishes, and loves you, and as your father, that is all I could ever ask for.

Speaking of, Noah, welcome to the family! You’ve brought an added joy and a new light to our lives. You’ve made our precious Cathy’s smile all the brighter, all the more genuine. For that, you have my deepest and most heartfelt gratitude.

As a father, let me tell you this: love is a journey, not a destination. It’s about growing together, supporting each other, and cherishing every moment you share. Do not forget to stop and admire the sky and smell the roses.

Engagement Speech for My Daughter from Mother

I have no doubt that you will bring this same brightness and kindness into your marriage with Aaron.

Aaron, we knew you were special from the day we first met you. My husband tried to intimidate you and give you a hard time, but even he liked you from the beginning. We could see how light, confident, and happy you make our daughter—as parents, there’s nothing else we’d rather see.

May your engagement be full of love, respect, and openness. May you both get the things you want and learn how to compromise equally. Lastly, may you face life’s challenges hand in hand and never lose sight of what brought you two together.

So, everyone, let’s raise our glasses to Hannah and Aaron! Love each other fiercely, joyfully, unconditionally, and endlessly!

Seeing you with Alex, I know in my heart that your future is bright and boundless, and your love will only grow deeper with each passing day.

Alex, thank you for bringing such joy, love, and hope into her life. We’ve gotten to know you over the years, and we wholeheartedly welcome you into our family with open arms and hearts full of love.

As you start planning your wedding and enjoying this engagement honeymoon period, remember that love is the greatest and grandest adventure. Cherish each other, laugh together, and hold on through life’s often unexpected twists and turns.

Here’s to new beginnings, to a love that lasts, and to my darling daughter and her wonderful partner. May your life together be as sweet and joyous as today.

Speaking of… Jane, from the day you were born, you’ve brought so much joy, laughter, and, to be honest, a fair bit of drama into our lives. Your high school years were a rollercoaster! And now, you’ve found Charlie, who not only tolerates your quirks but actually enjoys them!

Charlie, welcome to this messy but functional family. You’re brave, and we love that. Just a heads up, she gets her stubbornness from me, and her inability to be on time from her father. So whenever she’s late to a date, you can blame Nate for that!

To my daughter and future son-in-law , remember that marriage is like a walk in the park… Yellowstone National Park. But seriously, keep laughing, keep loving, and keep supporting each other just like you do now.

So, let’s raise a glass to Jane and Charlie, who clearly have an astounding sense of humor to choose each other. Sweethearts, may your life be filled with as much happiness and as many laughs as you’ve brought us today.

Chloe, you have always been the brightest light of our lives. You’ve filled our days with so much love, laughter, and some unexpected adventures.

It feels just like yesterday when you were playing dress-up, trying on my dresses and heels, and looking for your prince charming. Today, you’re here with Grant… I guess you can say, he’s here to grant your wishes.

Grant, seeing the way you look at my daughter, with so much love and admiration, brings back memories of a time when her father and I started our journey together. We couldn’t be happier to welcome you into our family and watch you start your own fairytale together.

My dear Chloe, as you step into this new chapter, never forget the love that surrounds you, the values that guide you, and the memories that have shaped you. May your love story be as beautiful and enduring as the love that has brought us all here today.

Let’s raise our glasses to a lifetime of happiness, to love that grows, and to cherished memories, both old and new.

Writing an Engagement Speech for Your Daughter: Guide + Tips

woman starting to draft an engagement speech for my daughter on a blank journal

Start With Reflection

The process of writing an engagement speech for your daughter begins with a reflection on your part. Think about her life so far—her childhood, achievements, milestones, and the journey she has taken to reach this point.

To personalize your speech and make it more touching, include an anecdote that captures her personality or a story about a special moment you shared.

Include Her Partner

Given that this is a speech for your daughter’s engagement, you should also mention her partner. Show your appreciation and welcome them into your family.

You can also share a brief story about an interaction you had with her partner or an observation about their characteristics.

Offer Advice and Well-Wishes

Share some wisdom about relationships and marriage you have accumulated over the years; as much as possible, draw from personal experiences and insights.

Likewise, tell them your hopes and dreams for their future together. Focus on themes like love, happiness, and growth.

Keep It Light and Positive

Keep the tone of your engagement speech for your daughter jovial. A touch of lighthearted humor can be delightfully engaging, giving your guests a good laugh. However, make sure that everything you say is appropriate and in good taste.

If you plan on adding an anecdote about your daughter and her partner, try not to include anything too embarrassing or personal.

Aim for a speech that is around 3–5 minutes when spoken out loud. This gives you enough time to say something meaningful and impactful without taking too much time and losing your guests’ attention.

Conclude With a Toast

Finish your speech by telling everyone to raise their glass in a celebratory toast for the newly engaged couple. This is a perfect time to say a poignant line about marriage or even your well wishes.

Rehearse Your Speech

Public speaking does not come naturally to many people. However, practice makes perfect; rehearse the delivery of your speech multiple times before the big day. You may want to pay close attention to your pace, body language, tone, and comfort.

Practicing can also help you during revisions, as you will spot any awkward or unnatural moments in your engagement speech for your daughter.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, an engagement party speech for your daughter is a tribute to her and this new chapter of her life. Most importantly, you must speak from the heart—be genuine and heartfelt in what you say. Your daughter will appreciate it more than anything else.

When it comes to a wedding, one of the most anticipated speeches is the father of the bride’s.

It’s a moment for the father to express his love and pride for his daughter, offer advice and well wishes for the newlyweds, and thank everyone for being a part of this special day.

But for many fathers, the idea of giving a speech can be intimidating . You want to make sure you come across as confident, clear, and knowledgeable, but where do you start?

Brainstorming and planning ahead can help you organize your thoughts and ensure you hit all the key elements. From there, you can start writing and incorporating techniques to make your speech stand out.

Father of the bride giving a wedding speech

What should you say in a Father of the Bride speech?

When it comes to delivering a memorable father of the bride speech, there are several key elements that you should incorporate. These elements will help you to create a speech that is heartfelt, emotional, and memorable for all the right reasons.

Introduce Yourself

Firstly, it’s important to introduce yourself and welcome the guests . This will help to set the tone for your speech and make everyone feel at ease. You can also take this opportunity to thank the guests for coming and for their support.

Share a Short Story

Next, it’s time to share stories and memories about your daughter. This is the perfect opportunity to reminisce about happy times and to highlight the qualities that make your daughter so special. You can also use this time to welcome your new son-in-law or daughter-in-law and to express your happiness for the happy couple.

Offer Words of Wisdom

It’s also important to offer some words of wisdom and marriage advice. This can be done in a concise and meaningful way, and can include quotes or anecdotes that have special meaning to you and your family. You can also share your hopes and wishes for the future of the couple.

End with a Toast

Of course, no father of the bride speech would be complete without a toast. Raise a toast to the happy couple and their future together, and share your pride and joy in their union. You can also take this opportunity to thank the maid of honor and the master of ceremonies for their contributions to the wedding.

As the father of the bride, you have a special role to play in your daughter’s wedding. Your speech is one of the most anticipated and memorable moments of the wedding reception, and it’s an opportunity to express your love and pride for your daughter and your new son-in-law.

Your speech should be heartfelt, sincere, and personal. It’s a chance to share your thoughts and feelings about your daughter, her new spouse, and their future together. Your words should be chosen carefully to reflect the love and support you have for the couple.

Remember that your speech is not just about your daughter, but also about your family. It’s a time to acknowledge and thank the guests who have come to celebrate this special occasion with you and your family. You should also take a moment to welcome your new son-in-law into the family and express your happiness at having him as part of your family.

When preparing your speech, it’s important to keep in mind the overall tone of the wedding. Is it a formal, traditional affair, or a more casual, relaxed event? Your speech should fit the tone of the wedding and reflect the personality of the couple.

Finally, don’t forget to practice your speech before the big day. This will help you feel more confident and ensure that you deliver your message clearly and effectively. With a little preparation and a lot of love, your father of the bride speech is sure to be a highlight of the wedding reception.

Brainstorming and Planning

Before you start writing a father of the bride speech, it’s important to take some time to brainstorm and plan. This will help you structure your speech and make sure you include all the important elements. Here are some tips to help you get started:

Step 1: Gather Ideas

The first step in planning your father of the bride speech is to gather ideas. Think about your daughter and her relationship with her new spouse. What are some of their shared interests? What are some of your favorite memories with your daughter? What advice do you want to give the newlyweds?

Write down all your ideas on a piece of paper or in a document. Don’t worry about organizing them yet, just get everything down.

Step 2: Organize Your Ideas

Once you have a list of ideas, it’s time to organize them. Look for common themes or topics that you want to cover in your speech. For example, you might want to talk about your daughter’s childhood, her relationship with her new spouse, and your hopes for their future together.

Create an outline for your speech, with each idea or topic as a separate section. This will help you stay organized and make sure you cover everything you want to say.

Step 3: Write Your Speech

With your ideas organized and your outline in place, it’s time to start writing your speech. Use your outline as a guide, and fill in the details for each section.

Remember to keep your speech concise and focused. Aim for a length of around five minutes, and avoid rambling or going off on tangents.

Step 4: Practice Your Speech

Once you’ve written your speech, it’s important to practice it. Stand in front of a mirror and read your speech out loud. This will help you get comfortable with the material and make sure you’re speaking clearly.

You might also want to practice in front of a friend or family member. Ask for their feedback and make any necessary adjustments to your speech.

Step 5: Deliver Your Speech

On the day of the wedding, take a deep breath and deliver your speech with confidence. Remember to speak slowly and clearly, and make eye contact with the audience.

End your speech with a heartfelt congratulations to the newlyweds, and a toast to their future together.

Writing Tips and Techniques

When it comes to writing a father of the bride speech, there are a few helpful tips and techniques that can make the process easier and ensure that your speech is a success. Here are some pointers to keep in mind:

  • Be yourself: The most important thing to remember when writing your speech is to be yourself. Don’t try to be someone you’re not or use language that doesn’t feel natural to you. Speak from the heart and let your personality shine through.
  • Practice public speaking: If you’re not used to speaking in public, it’s a good idea to practice beforehand. You can do this by rehearsing your speech in front of a mirror or recording yourself and watching it back. This will help you build confidence and get used to the sound of your own voice.
  • Know your audience: When writing your speech, it’s important to keep your audience in mind. Think about who will be listening to your speech and what they might be expecting to hear. Tailor your speech to your audience and try to make it relevant and engaging for them.
  • Keep it concise: While you might have a lot to say, it’s important to keep your speech concise and to the point. Aim for a speech that is around five minutes long, as this will keep your audience engaged without dragging on too long.
  • Use humor: A little bit of humor can go a long way in a father of the bride speech. Try to include some lighthearted jokes or anecdotes that will make your audience smile and help to break the ice.

Practicing the Speech

Now that you have written your father of the bride speech, it’s time to start practicing. Practicing your speech will help you deliver it confidently and avoid any last-minute jitters. Here are some tips to help you practice your speech effectively:

  • Practice in front of a mirror: Practicing in front of a mirror will help you see your facial expressions and body language. This will help you identify any nervous habits or gestures that you might want to avoid.
  • Practice with a timer: Timing is crucial when it comes to delivering a speech. Practice your speech with a timer to ensure that you are not going over the allotted time. This will also help you pace yourself and avoid rushing through your speech.
  • Practice in front of a friend or family member: Practicing in front of a friend or family member will help you get feedback on your speech. They can also help you identify any areas that need improvement.
  • Record yourself: Recording yourself while practicing your speech will help you identify any areas that need improvement. You can also listen to your speech to get a feel for your pacing and tone.

Remember, practice makes perfect. The more you practice your speech, the more confident you will be when it’s time to deliver it. So, take the time to practice your speech and you’ll be sure to deliver a memorable speech that your daughter and her new spouse will cherish forever.

mother of the bride speech tips

  • Arrange and document your thoughts One of the first rules of writing a short and sweet mother of the bride speech is organization. Keep your thoughts organized by documenting them on a piece of paper or notebook. This way, you don’t forget the things you would say, and it helps you practice better.
  • Keep it short but informative A speech from the mother of the bride shouldn’t be longer than minutes. But it could be as short as three minutes. So ensure your speech is short and informative. You don’t have to repeat words and make too many jokes as fillers. Guests would lose interest and turn to other things. Below are some tips for constructing a unique body of the speech.

Think about:

  • Extol virtues Talk about your daughter’s great qualities and things that make her stand out from others. Her selflessness (with examples), empathetic nature, and situations that she turned around. Her friends and siblings are troves of information.
  • Reference her childhood Take Memories from her childhood, especially if she was a happy baby. Kids do the funniest things, so relate unforgettable scenarios.
  • Complement things you see Reiterate the beauty of the day and the details that went into creating the wedding venue. The decor, floral arrangement, theme, palette, and even the location. You should also talk about the bride and how stunning she looks.
  • Talk about the groom Tell the guests that your daughter is in good hands because of certain qualities. Talk about the groom’s qualities and when you knew he was good for your daughter. Welcome him to the family one more time and remind him of your love.
  • Pass down knowledge Give some advice to your daughter and her husband. It could be something as old as time that your mother passed down to you. It could also be advice from your experience in life or marriage.
  • Lastly, practice your speech several times by reading it aloud. Also, edit and make your final corrections, then print and save.

Don’ts

  • Do not make it too formal Loosen up a bit and don’t make it too formal. Give your speech like you’re talking to a friend. Throw in some jokes to break the ice and smile a lot.
  • Do not pay big attention to yourself or your guests Focus your speech on the new couple. The spotlight isn’t on you or the guests at this time.
  • Do not make it too long Keep your speech brief and sweet so as not to bore the guests.
  • Do not mention any exes of your daughter Since the wedding is about the new couple, make no mention of the past. No exes, bad relationship experiences, or reminiscing.

What To Say If You Do Not Know The Groom?

There are situations where the bride’s mom doesn’t meet the groom until the wedding day. In such cases, speak of the groom through your daughter’s eyes. Talk about the beautiful things she told you about him and why she fell in love with him.

  • Be unique Be yourself when giving the speech. Smile genuinely, don’t be under pressure to say funny things. Speak the way you’d do in a friendly conversation. Also, while we know every child is the best, bring a twist to your speech that eliminates the cliche. Let your words come from the heart and mean them. Only then will the audience connect.
  • Don’t do the thankyous Try not to steal the groom’s thunder by doing the thank yous. Welcome the guests and leave it at that.
  • Be emotional It’s okay to break down when giving your speech. After all, your daughter is setting off on her own. However, avoid the drama and stay in control. Don’t be afraid of being vulnerable, but don’t over-stretch it.
  • Include the new inlaws Mention the in-laws in your speech because you’re also gaining a new family. If they made contributions towards the wedding, show gratitude by saying some sweet things about them. Mention how loving they are, the way you get along and all.
  • Don’t overstate your daughter’s accomplishments It is beautiful to have a daughter who makes you proud. But her wedding isn’t the place to list out her complete CV. Keep your speech concise and get it moving.
  • Add humor Throw in a few jokes that will give the guests a good belly laugh. Maybe when you made your girl eat her vegetables as a kid and things in that line. Let the guests know the bride is a happy woman.
  • Relax into the speech No tension, relax, be a natural, and watch your confidence skyrocket.

What is a famous quote for father of the bride speech?

Father of the Bride Quotes. John Gregory Brown: A father’s words to his daughter are like a line of gold thread. Over time, it becomes long enough to weave into a cloth of love. Enid Bagnold: A father makes his baby into a woman. And when she is a woman, he turns her back again. Guy Lombardo: Many men wish they were strong enough to tear a telephone book in half, especially if they have a teenage daughter. Euripides: A father’s daughter is his most precious possession. It’s sad to see them grow up. But it would kill you quicker if they didn’t. These are my daughters. But where are the children? Goethe: We can give our children two things that will last. One is roots. The other is wings. Parents don’t let go of their children, so children let go of them. It’s not until later that children understand their stories and accomplishments. They sit atop the stories of their mothers and fathers, stones upon stones, beneath the waters of their lives. Norman Wright: In marriage, each partner should encourage, forgive, and enable. Tom Mullen: Happy marriages begin when we marry the ones we love, and they blossom when we love the ones we marry. Leo Tolstoy: A happy marriage isn’t about how compatible you are, but how you deal with differences. Ogden Nash: Keep your marriage full of love by admitting when you’re wrong. When you’re right, shut up. Friedrich Nietzsche: When you marry, ask yourself this question: Can you talk to this person well into your old age? Everything else in marriage is temporary.

That was amazing cinematography. Obviously the dad fulfilled a lifelong dream there to be in an action movie. Plus, he must either be loaded or just have a ton of good friends to help him make this- a couple cops, a pilot, a cameraman, a film editor, and two friends willing to be filmed getting beat up in a bar bathroom. And what a car, this was a whole package.

I wished I had such an amazing awesome papa or a father-in-law. This was absolutely brilliant to watch how much effort was put in to create such a masterpiece article on his daughters wedding reception. Truly remarkable to have the privilege to watch the nonstop James Bond inspired action packed scenes.

i too was wondering that after the father went through all that ordeal, that everybody didn’t stand up and applaud him or the daughter didn’t jump up and hug him with tears in her eyes, or why the son in law didn’t ask to join him on his other adventure if he has another daughter or son. i think that probably he is accustomed doing this with his family and the only ones who would be amazed is us perusal this article and his in-laws

My absolute top favorite of all the Father of the Bride speeches! Very well planned out and put together: I hope both Laura and Lewis will always cherish and remember this very special day! Congratulations to the happy couple, and my best wishes for a long and happy life together as husband and wife ❤

After perusal all the rujbish you put on YouTube someone goes and put something so heartwarming its about time people put more of this type of stuff on this is so heartwarming its truly beautiful. And to the farther good one on you for doing this unbelievable thing your daughter isn’t going to forget this for as long as she lives what a beautiful memory

Found this by chance… God, that’s absolute professional work! You should merchandise it 🙂 Can’t tell, as a cineastic who does editing as a hobby, how enthusiastic I am about that. Camera angle, timing, cuts, slow motion sequences and music – couldn’t have done this better. Father and his team must have spent incredible amounts of time and editing to make the whole thing perfect. And yes, it is! Want to have your team at my wedding. Great respect to all of you!

That was amazing! Yes, he starred in his own movie, but it was also a testament to his love for his daughter, and the lengths he would go to try and create something unique and ohmygod memorable for her. perusal her, I kept getting the feeling that she was more negative about it than impressed or touched, unfortunately. Perhaps it’s my age or own fatherhood experiences, but it really did seem to me that he was doing it for her, to try and give her something that utilized all he had to offer.

I mean it’s a great film but the day isn’t about him, it’s about them. I hope he’s said a load of nice things about them beforehand rather than making his speech all about what a super dad he is. His new son in law even says he doesn’t know how to top it. Nobody should feel second best on their own wedding day.

Tony Goldwyn's 2 Children: All About His Daughters Anna and Tess

Tony Goldwyn shares two daughters with his wife Jane Musky

how do i write a wedding speech for my daughter

Tony Goldwyn is an acting powerhouse but he’s also a proud dad to two children: daughters Anna and Tess.

Best known for his roles in Scandal and Law & Order , his big break came in the film Ghost , and landing that role was a family affair. In an interview with Today in 2019, Tony shared that his wife, Jane Musky, was the production designer on the film and encouraged him to go after an acting role in the movie.

“That’s how I got the part, I was a semi-employed actor, struggling, and Jane was this big fancy production designer,” he said, going on to explain that his wife had nudged him to go for the role, leading Tony, in turn, to pursue his agent about the part and land an audition. With landing a major role came another huge life change — the couple decided they were ready to start a family.

"That's how Anna, our oldest daughter (came about). We finally were like, 'Ok, I guess we can have kids now cause I have a job. It looks like I'll get another one,' " he said in the Today interview.

Tony and Jane's daughter Anna was born in 1990, followed by the couple's younger daughter, Tess, who arrived in 1995. It is no secret that Tony is a dedicated father. On International Daughters Day in 2019, he posted a screenshot of his phone's wallpaper, a photo of his two daughters, with the caption, "Screensaver forever. #internationaldaughterday."

Here is everything to know about Tony Goldwyn's two children, Anna and Tess.

Tony and Jane welcomed their first child, Anna Musky-Goldwyn, on May 8, 1990.

She grew up in California and attended college at UCLA where she was a member of the school's rowing team. She is passionate about women's sports, and posts often on Instagram about surfing, running and biking.

When she's not being active, Anna works in the entertainment industry like her parents. Tony explained to PEOPLE in 2024 that the family feel "lucky" to all work in the entertainment business.

" Because we know how lucky we are to have something, and a lot of people who do jobs that they're not passionate about may make a good living, but they kind of go, 'Ah, I hate my job,' " he said.

Tony also revealed that Anna wanting to work in television and film came about during an on-set visit with her father during a taping of Law & Order.

"She stood right by me. I was shocked, because some kids get bored on set," he said. "And that night I took her to dinner after we wrapped and she said, 'Dad, this is what I want to do with the rest of my life.' And she did, though she decided it was writing, not so much directing yet."

Outside of the entertainment industry, Anna is passionate about politics. She co-founded a podcast, Political Playlist , which was nominated for a Webby Award. The podcast discusses the 18% of Congress members who are under 45 years old, among other topics.

When she's not working on her podcast or acting, Anna has been recently preparing for her wedding. She posted about her engagement to Billy Durden, a film editor, on Instagram . "Sweaty from tennis, under the bluffs in my favorite place, just us and your mom’s ring (bless her dainty fingers),” she wrote in the caption. “It was perfect. Because you know me perfectly. You’re not just my better half, but every piece of me."

Tony previously said he will be a "mess" at Anna’s wedding. He's concerned he won't be able to make it through his emotions on the big day.

"That's what I'm most nervous about, is being able to get through it. Because I just get very emotional regarding my children," he told PEOPLE in May 2024. "From the time my kids were young, they're like, 'Dad, you're just not going to make it through your wedding speeches. You know that.' "

While neither Tony or his daughter is yet to share any further details of her nuptials on social media, on June 12, Anna posted a carousel of images showing what appeared to be her Bachelorette weekend.

"Marriage is cool my but have you ever done a spa + art weekend with your best friends?" she wrote in the caption of the post, adding a bride emoji.

Tess Goldwyn, 29

Tony and Jane welcomed their daughter Tess Goldwyn on March 6, 1995.

She is an actress based in New York, per her website . Tess holds a bachelor's degree from Northwestern University and a master's in acting from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.

Tess has landed roles on Murphy Brown, Better Nate Than Ever and New Amsterdam as well as collaborating with her father on-screen.

The father-daughter duo worked together on Law & Order, where she portrayed the character of District Attorney Baxter's daughter during the season 23 finale. She also acted in her father’s directorial debut, Ezra , a 2024 feature film that stars Robert DeNiro , Bobby Cannavale and Rose Byrne .

In a video for Actors Training Center that was posted on the group's Facebook in 2020, Tess and Tony shared how much they love working together.

“So I was thinking that during these really weird pandemic times that we’re living in, one of the things that sustains me always, and has really sustained me and Tess, is the ability to collaborate with each other, which we honestly have been doing,” he said.

Tess added, "We put together a group of a couple friends and have been reading through a play that we really like every week on Zoom and have truly just been switching up parts and pairs and talking about the scenes of the play ... which has been really helpful."

According to her website, Tess is set to perform in the play " Our Class " with the Classic Stage Company at the Lynn F. Angelson Theater in New York City from Sept. 12 to Nov. 3, 2024, followed by " The Merchant of Venice " with the same company later in the year. She previously performed in "Our Class" earlier in 2024 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
