DESCRIPTION

UC San Diego Health is a Magnet designated organization, which is a prestigious recognition that applies to only 10% of all U.S. hospitals. Magnet is the "gold standard" for nursing excellence and is based on strengths in five key areas which include transformational leadership, structural empowerment, exemplary professional practice, new knowledge, innovation and improvements and empirical outcomes. The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is an Advance Practice Registered Nurse prepared at the master’s or doctorate level and is certified as a CNS with the California Board of Registered Nursing. The CNS is part of the leadership team and collaborates with members of their team to provide and influence optimal patient care and service in their patient population. The CNS demonstrates the competencies within the three spheres of influence of their practice model which are (1) the patient/family, (2) nursing practice, and (3) the organization, with the patient being integral to their purpose and practice. The CNS encompasses the following roles: clinical expert, consultant, leader, educator, evidence-based practice advocate, inter and intradepartmental liaison, and resource professional. The CNS educates, guides, and mentors the nursing staff and health care team members in the provision of patient care at a local and system level.

Depending on licensure and experience level, may be hired as a level 4 or level 5 CNS.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN).

Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the state of California.

Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) certification issued by the state of California or licensure / certification in another advanced nurse practice discipline.

BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to get BART within six (6) months of hire date.

Five (5+) or more years of relevant RN experience.

Recent experience in developing educational programs and materials.

Ability to develop learning to a wide range of audiences and cultures using adult learning strategies and a variety of instructional methodologies.

Recent experience with competency development and validation.

Recent experience with quality improvement or evidence-based practice change projects and organization change.

Experience with presentations at professional meetings/conferences.

Excels in working in a team environment.

Proficient with information systems and computer programs such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Excellent interpersonal, organizational, planning and leadership skills.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Works effectively with patients and families.

MORGANTOWN — The West Virginia University School of Nursing is boosting nursing education opportunities with a $2.6 million grant from the Bedford Falls Foundation to address workforce challenges within the Mountain State and across the nation.

The grant funds support coordinated philanthropic efforts by Bedford Falls founders William “Bill” Conway and his late wife, Joanne Barkett Conway, to increase the nursing workforce throughout the eastern United States.

The WVU School of Nursing is working to educate more nurses amid a nationwide shortage caused by changing demographics, greater demand for health care, a rise in retirements and other factors. The Bedford Falls grant to WVU will provide student scholarships and faculty support for four programs aimed at producing well-trained nurses to meet health care needs in West Virginia and beyond.

“Nurses play a vital role in the health care team and in our state,”  Dr. Clay Marsh, chancellor and executive dean for WVU Health Sciences, said. “This grant allows us to focus on our land-grant mission of serving the people of West Virginia and providing top-tier training to our students.”

The grant funding will help WVU expand two existing degree programs to new sites. Later this year, the Licensed Practical Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing program — the only one of its kind in the state of West Virginia — will be offered at the WVU Keyser Campus, simultaneously boosting the number of BSN-educated nurses in the state and creating opportunities for practical nurses to advance their careers. Additionally, the WVU School of Nursing is in the planning stage of offering its Accelerated BSN program at a new campus location in the state’s Eastern Panhandle.

The grant will also bolster an international nursing program with Arellano University, a private university in the Philippines that previously partnered with the now-closed Alderson Broaddus University in West Virginia. Program participants will complete their first three years of BSN education at Arellano University and transfer to WVU for their final year. The Bedford Falls grant will provide scholarships to cover the difference in tuition cost for students during their year at WVU, as well as faculty support.

The WVU Health System and other area health care providers have ample employment opportunities to offer these Conway Scholars when they graduate.

Finally, the grant will support the existing PhD program in Morgantown, significantly expanding available scholarship support for future nursing educators. Following graduation, Conway Scholars who receive a PhD will be required to teach for three years at a school within the region. Many are expected to continue teaching in the region thereafter, filling a need for PhD-educated faculty to replace retirees in the coming years.

“This substantial investment from the Bedford Falls Foundation will make a lasting impact for our students and faculty, as well as for the expansion of our programs,” said Tara Hulsey, dean and E. Jane Martin Endowed Professor. “The Conways have created a legacy of support for nursing education and the WVU School of Nursing is honored to be among its beneficiaries.”  

The Bedford Falls Foundation supports a variety of charitable causes, with a particular focus on nursing education. The Conways’ philanthropy in that area was inspired by a conversation Joanne had with a waitress about her struggle to afford a nursing degree and, over the last 11 years, the couple’s generosity has supported nursing education at 17 universities.

  “With a critical nursing shortage nationwide, we are thrilled to be expanding our geography to include West Virginia,” Bill Conway said. “We look forward to this new partnership with WVU and to creating more nurses for a region that needs them.”

The Bedford Falls Foundation grant was awarded through the WVU Foundation, the nonprofit organization that receives and administers private donations on behalf of the University, in conjunction with WVU Day of Giving. The 24-hour fundraising event, held March 20, raised $30.4 million from over 8,500 gifts.

Department Nursing

Location:  Nasseff Tower 8 A/B (NT 8), Orthopedic/Trauma (General Care). Hybrid Care Unit developing inpatient care of the future, today. 

Patient Care Type:  This is an exciting, newly built unit that is often the first to pilot cutting-edge technologies that enhance patient care and support staff. Mayo Clinic uses feedback from this unit to determine if new technologies or processes will be scaled to additional units in the hospital and across the enterprise. We care for various patients who have orthopedic trauma, spine surgery, hand surgery, orthopedic cancer, and a small amount of total joint replacements. This innovative unit collaborates closely with world-renowned physicians and surgeons, providing crucial support for their complex surgeries.

Bed #:  24 The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) provides organizational, receptionist, and clerical support to patient care units and the health care team. These duties may include monitoring and ordering supplies, promptly answering patient call lights and elevating patient needs to nursing staff, and assisting the care team with managing orders in the electronic health record (EHR). Communicates effectively via a variety of modalities with patients, visitors, and facility staff and plays an integral role in communication across the continuum of care. Functions as a resource to members of the health care team and is familiar with multiple Mayo Clinic resources. The HUC activities complement the patient care delivery model. Carries out all aspects of the job using good judgment and problem-solving skills, strong interpersonal skills, and assumes responsibility for self-development within the role and participates in continuous improvement activities. Supports the healthcare team by anticipating and responding to team requests and patient needs.

High school diploma or equivalent required. Basic knowledge of computer systems and strong keyboarding skills (i.e., Windows-based applications, LAN use, and intranet/internet use) required. 

Additional Qualifications: Successful completion of HUC post-secondary program, or HUC Certification preferred. Minimum of one year working experience in a medical environment preferred. Knowledge of basic medical terminology preferred. Preferred proficiency of computer skills. Working knowledge with EHR systems, EPIC preferred. Outstanding customer service, interpersonal and organizational skills. Adapts effectively to unpredictable situations within the patient care setting. Availability to work flexible hours including days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.

The Dialysis Staff Nurse includes responsibility for all dialysis/nursing activities of the acute and chronic end stage renal disease patient. The RN will report directly to the Nurse Manager for Dialysis. The incumbent is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing direct patient care. This Nurse possesses specialized knowledge and skills regarding the treatment of patients with acute and chronic renal failure in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. The Dialysis Nurse possess the ability to perform hemodialysis, critical care dialysis treatment, CRRT, Plasmapheresis, Peritoneal Dialysis, Home Dialysis, and infusion therapies. The Dialysis Nurse is responsible for performing the dialysis procedures by following the physician's orders. The Dialysis Nurse will effectively function as the Team Leader, who directs the RN and other Team members in the unit when designated. The Dialysis Nurse participates /leads unit based shared governance, performance improvement projects, unit- based committees and safety initiatives. The Dialysis Nurse will provide hemodialysis to patients with COVID and other infectious diseases. The Dialysis Nurse will perform hemodialysis, Continuous Renal Replacement Therapies (CRRT), Plasmapheresis, Peritoneal Dialysis, Emergency treatments and related therapies during on call hours. Other essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: -Provide a full range of nursing care to patient utilizing the nursing process. -Complete initial assessments of patient conditions and response to treatment. Complete monthly nursing care plans, patient care conferences and goals of care meetings. -Assess patient learning needs, leaning preference and readiness to learn, develop and implement a plan to meet needs and instruct patient and families. -Promote discharge planning and continuity of care through developing an individualized plan of care in collaboration with patient, family, and health care team. -Administer prescribed therapies using appropriate judgement. -Accurately document in the medical record patient findings, assessments and care provided. -Administer medication in accordance with established procedure/policy. -Follow restraints seclusion procedure.
