Yashoda movie review: Samantha Ruth Prabhu shines, but she cannot hide the flaws in this thriller

Samantha is brilliant in Yashoda that falters in effectively landing its shocking twists and turns.

Since the morning of the release of Yashoda , I have seen multiple reports that claim that a lot rides on Yashoda for actor Samantha who plays the lead in this film. To be honest, the actor has proved time and again that her performance will stand the test of time, and it is then not fair to encapsulate all of an actor in one project. Yashoda is not a film that would receive rapturous attention from the audience, and neither is it a dud. It is a promising premise aided by great performances of its lead cast.

What it does suffer from is lack of bringing its vision from paper onto screen. Without going too much into the details of the film’s plot, which is a thriller that you must experience as an audience, what I can tell you is that there is all signs of making a great film in Yashoda ’s first half. It sets up the characters, their lives and their ordeals. For instance, why does Samantha as Yashoda interested in being a surrogate? Who is Madhubala (Varalaxmi), and what is the truth about her identity and so on.

So where exactly does it falter? It begins to misstep the moment the film begins to hide behind Yashoda. Instead of packing up the plot, and fleshing out the arc enough to aid the punches that the film hopes to land, the main hope for the film is Yashoda’s antics. How she gets close to other surrogates, how she befriends people in the clinic that she goes to are hyperfocussed. Most of the times, the why becomes an afterthought.

It is also this nuanced look at delivering twists that is missing from the film. For instance, does a twist land the punch, and leave audiences gasping? Or does it leave them mildly interested? They could also be left clueless if the said punches didn’t land. Where you can place Yashoda in this scale is smack in the middle. They are clear about the twist that they want to introduce and it is smart. However, the way they introduce it and way these particular scenes are written do not do much for the plot progression.

It is not so much that you see what is coming because the twists are cliched and borrowed from stereotypes. If anything, some of the most interesting things about the film apart from its premise is its twists. It is unfortunate that they do not have space to breathe and take shape of their own. The punch is required to make a good shocking twist in a thriller effectual is what is missing from the film.

Considering that the film is a thriller, it is important to pay attention to the pace of the film. At times, this also suffers because of humour that is not seamless. The humour in this film, which on second thought feels unintentional, is jarring and ends up leaving us disconnected from the seriousness of the plot. In fact, the dependency on Yashoda’s act throughout the film goes overboard, has the same effect. Because it was so obviously out of place, it threw me as a viewer out of the story momentarily.

This in turn affected how engrossing the film could have been. Such disturbances occur not partially, but often throughout the story. The onus is then on the viewers to stay with the characters. I am then forced to pay attention as opposed to me being instinctively engrossed in the film. This is, in fact, my biggest complaint abut Yashoda . The fact that the thriller gave me the time and space to let my wander. Throughout it all, my attention did stay on one thing, or I must say, one person and that is Samantha.

She lights up the screen in ways few actors are capable of today, and she does so with so much enthusiasm and affection for the camera that one cannot help but be attracted towards her character on screen.

To conclude, Yashoda as a film is a great example of how a film could be interesting, entertaining, and yet flawed to the point of contention.

Actor Samantha Ruth Prabhu, on Tuesday, unveiled the new trailer of her upcoming mythological romantic drama film Shaakuntalam .

On Instagram, Samantha dropped the new trailer which she captioned, "Get ready to embark on an epic journey of love #Shaakuntalam worldwide release on April 14 in 3D & 2D."

The Pan-India mythological romantic drama stars Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Dev Mohan in lead roles. The film is based on a popular Indian play Shakuntala by Kalidasa. Shakuntala is the wife of King Dushyant and the mother of Emperor Bharata. King Dushyant meets Shakuntala when he is out on a hunting trip in the jungle. They fell in love and got married as per the Gandharva system.

Soon after she dropped the trailer, fans flooded the comment section with red hearts and fire emoticons. "Good job lots of love," a user wrote. Another user wrote, "Soooo excited for this one." A user wrote, "We are all ready to witness the first Indian Disney Our culture, our tradition all Indian."

The film is all set to hit the theatres on April 14 and it will be out in Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada. Recently while talking about Shaakuntalam , Samantha told ANI, "It's a love story. And love is like a universe in itself. Our cultural heritage is rich. And the story of this film is inspired by one of our oldest classics. Apart from the story, the movie has high-level graphics and special effects." Dev Mohan has been paired opposite Samantha.

Expressing her feeling, she said, "I am excited as well as a bit nervous. The budget for the film is quite high. But I feel, the audience will love the movie." Samantha was recently seen in the sci-fi thriller film Yashoda which received positive responses from the audience. She will be next seen in an upcoming romantic film Khusi opposite Vijay Deverakonda and in the action thriller web series Citadel alongside Varun Dhawan.

Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s new film Yashoda begins shooting

Samantha-starrer yashoda will release in telugu, tamil, kannada, malayalam, and hindi..

Samantha’s new movie has been titled Yashoda. The shooting of the project commenced on Monday with a puja ceremony. Sivalenka Krishna Prasad, who has produced films such as Aditya 369 and Sammohanam, is making Yashoda under his Sridevi Movies banner.

Touted to be a new-age thriller, the film will be directed by director duo Hari and Harish. Samantha plays an author-backed role in Yashoda. The film will release in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi.

Speaking at the shoot commencement event, Sivalenka Krishna Prasad said, “We all know that Samantha attained pan-India attention with The Family Man 2. In accordance with her current image, we have conceived a thriller that caters to a wide section of the audience.”

The filming part of Yashoda is expected to be completed by March 2022. More details about the cast, crew and the film’s release date will be announced soon by the makers. Mani Sharma and M Sukumar are on board to handle the music and cinematography, respectively.

On the work front, Samantha has Shaakuntalam and Kaathu Vaakula Rendu Kaadhal in her kitty. She also has an international project, Arrangements of Love, which will be helmed by Philip John of Downton Abbey fame.

Madhoo opens up about how the film industry has changed drastically over the years. She remembers how actresses struggled with basic facilities like washroom and vanity vans, often forced to change their costumes in the open.

That being said, the title and first look poster of the film have now been unveiled and here are the exciting details about the movie. Vijay Deverakonda's upcoming film with Samantha has been titled Kushi and it is expected to be a heartwarming family entertainer that will be high on romance. The first look poster looks classy and elegant and it promises to be a colourful and vibrant film. The duo's pairing looks refreshing and it looks like a fun treat awaits fans. Along with the first look release, the makers also revealed the release plans of the film. Kushi will be hitting the screens on December 23, this year, during the Christmas - New Year holidays.

Murali G of Kaala and Sarpatta Parambarai fame will be handling the cinematography of this flick. Vijay Deverakonda's next release will be Liger which is helmed by Puri Jagannadh. Is Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s Yashoda Based on Real Story?

Samantha Ruth Prabhu left everyone on the edge of their seats with her performance in the 2022 film Yashoda . While it started off as a drama, it soon took a thrilling turn. However, it received mixed reactions from both critics and the audience. Some found the film’s plot interesting, while others called it a half-baked story. Nevertheless, the film was widely watched on Amazon Prime Video.

Despite mixed reviews, the movie has piqued the interest of audiences to know whether it is based on a true story. It follows the story of a young woman who arrives at a surrogacy center, only to uncover a shocking truth behind it. The movie’s official synopsis reads, “An innocent woman, Yashoda, agrees to be a surrogate mother due to her circumstances. She then finds herself trapped in a world of uncertainties. Amidst a myriad of politicians, doctors, and powerful people, how does she battle her way out?”

Is Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s Yashoda inspired by true events?

Ahead of Yashoda’s release, writer-director duo K Hari Shankar and Hareesh Narayan discussed the story’s origin. In an interview with Pinkvilla , the two revealed that the film was based on a true incident. However, they did add some psychological thrill to the story.

They said, “The backdrop of the story is about a crime which is happening without the knowledge of anyone in society. The crime which we are showing is based on a true incident but we have added some psychological thriller flavour to it. It is about a crime that is confronted by a normal girl when she learns about it. How she exposes the plot.”

In addition to Samantha Ruth Prabhu, the cast includes Varalaxmi Sarath Kumar and Unni Mukundan. The film also features Rao Ramesh, Sampath Raj, Murali Sharma, Madhurima, Kalpika Ganesh, and more.

On the work front, Samantha Ruth Prabhu will play a spy in the upcoming web series Citadel: Honey Bunny. The show, a spin-off of Priyanka Chopra’s Citadel, also stars Varun Dhawan in the lead role. Besides this, Maa Inti Bangaram is another one of her upcoming projects to look forward to.

The actress, best known for her key role in You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah , has been cast as the titular heroine in Nickelodeon Studios’ new live-action Dora the Explorer feature being made for Paramount+ and Nickelodeon.

Sol Dorado will be only the second time the adventurous Latina has been translated to the live-action world. Isabela Moner played the character in a 2019 movie directed by James Bobin that was released theatrically.

Dora, initially a long-running animated children’s series that began on Nickelodeon in 2000, is one of the Paramount’s biggest and more profitable franchises, with its impact felt through multiple series, merchandizing tie-ins, video games and toys. Dora , a new preschool animated series, debuted on Paramount+ in April and a second season is already greenlit.

Lorraine played Lydia Rodriguez Katz in My Bat Mitzvah , the offending best friend in 2023’s well-regarded Netflix coming-of-age comedy. The film revolved around Lydia’s friendship with the main character, Stacy Friedman (Sunny Sandler). The actress is a relative newcomer to the screen. She earned her first credit in 2020 on PBS series Kid Stew . That same year, she also appeared on AMC’s The Walking Dead: World Beyond.
