After you choose your topic, write a short summary about what you have learned about your experience with that topic. Then, let readers know how you feel about your case — and be honest. If you’ve been assigned the task of writing a reflection paper on a book you’ve read, film you’ve seen, or an event you’ve attended, you may be wondering where to start.

After all, there are few rules when it comes to writing a reflection, since it’s basically just your reaction and thoughts on the material—and all that creative freedom can be intimidating at first! But even with this lack of structure, there are steps you can take to write a reflection paper that adds value to the discussion.

What Is a Reflection Paper?

A reflection paper is a type of essay that requires you to reflect, or give your thoughts and opinions, on a certain subject or material. This type of essay is often assigned to students after they’ve read a book or watched a film.

However, it can also be written in a professional setting, often by those who study education or psychology, to reflect on an individual’s behavior. Or, you can write a reflection paper for your own purposes, to work out your thoughts and feelings on a personal subject.

If you’re a student, in most cases, you’ll be given a prompt or question to guide your reflection. Often, these assignments are completed in class, so the reflections are generally under 1,000 words. The good news is that there are on wrong answers!

However, there are things you can do to write more effective reflections that will give you (and your teachers, if applicable) more insight to your views and thought processes.

How to Write a Reflection Paper

Use these 5 tips to write a thoughtful and insightful reflection paper.

1. Answer key questions.

To write a reflection paper, you need to be able to observe your own thoughts and reactions to the material you’ve been given. A good way to start is by answering a series of key questions.

For example:

• What was your first reaction to the material? Was it positive, negative, or neutral?
• Do you find the writer (or director, presenter, etc.) to be credible?
• Has the material changed your mind in some way?
• Which issues or questions does the material fail to address?
• What new or remaining questions do you have after reading/viewing the material?
• What have you learned from this material?
• Does it remind you of any personal experiences, or anything else you’ve seen or read?

Answering these questions will help you formulate your own opinions, draw conclusions, and write an insightful reflection.

2. Identify a theme.

Once you’ve answered a few basic questions, look at your responses and see if you can identify any common themes .

What’s the main takeaway? If you could summarize your thoughts on this piece in one sentence, what would you say?

Think about what you’ve learned, or how the material has affected you. Be honest about how you feel, especially if the material incites any strong opinions or reactions from you.

3. Summarize.

Your reflection paper should not be just a mere summary of the material you’ve read or studied. However, you should give a recap of the most important aspects, and offer specific examples when necessary to back up any assertions you make.

Include information about the author (if you’re writing about a book or article). If you’re writing about a work of fiction, very briefly and concisely summarize the plot. If writing about nonfiction, share the author’s thesis, or the main argument they’re trying to make.

Just be careful to not overdo the summary—you don’t want to reproduce or offer a play-by-play of the original work, but rather offer enough context so readers can appreciate your reflection and analysis.

4. Analyze.

Your reflection paper is a great place to practice your critical thinking skills , which include analysis. The questions in Step 1 will offer you a good start when it comes to thinking more analytically.

Once you’ve offered enough context for your readers by including a brief summary, analyze the

• the credibility of the writer (or producer of the content)
• potential biases
• the intended purpose of the material

5. Make connections.

Does the material remind you of any personal experiences you’ve had, or other books or films you’ve encountered? Can you connect it to any current events or real-world examples?

Then, zoom out and try to see the bigger picture. What do these connections have in common? Can you point out a larger, more universal theme?

The more of these connections you can tie in to your reflection to create a cohesive picture, the better.

Reflection Paper Template

Reflection papers don’t really require a rigid structure—the most important thing is that you communicate your ideas clearly and effectively. (Of course, if you received specific guidelines from your instructor, you should stick to those.)

The following is a loose outline that you can use to guide you through your reflection paper:

• Include: Title, Author Name (or Director, Photographer, etc.).
• Briefly summarize the work and its main themes.
• Write a thesis that states the work’s overall impact on you.
• When relevant, include specific quotes or examples to support your claims.
• Explore your main reactions and thoughts after reviewing the material.
• Build connections to personal experiences and other works you’ve encountered.
• Show how the ideas from your body paragraphs tie together to support your thesis.
• Summarize the overall effect the material had on you.

Reflection Paper Example

The following is an example of a reflection paper I wrote for a university course in response to an academic article on conflict resolution, found in the book Managing Conflict in a World Adrift :

In “Understanding the Gendered Nature of Power,” Oudraat and Kuehnast explain how peace theorists have fallen short in their analyses of the role of gender (and of women especially). Because gender roles are a reflection of power dynamics within societies, they can also serve as valuable indicators of dynamics within conflicts and post-conflict processes.

The authors emphasize the importance of using international intervention wisely. Although postconflict reconstruction might seem like an opportunity to rethink gender norms and roles, it seems that postconflict programs tend more often to reproduce gender norms that “no longer contribute productive approaches to society and escalate social tensions.” While I think we should always strive to bring more opportunities to women and eradicate gender biases, I agree with the authors that international actors must “be attentive to the gendered nature of the societies in which they intervene.” We have seen many cases where international intervention, although well-meaning, can end up hurting a community even more by meddling without truly knowing the conditions of a local situation.

One example of such misguided help is the campaign for “clean stoves” in African villages, based on the idea that women are assaulted when they look for fuel and water outside their camps. Providing clean stoves does nothing to address the root of the problem (sexual violence), and in fact further confines women to their homes, while many studies show that times of collecting water or other supplies are often critical opportunities for women to communicate, socialize, exchange ideas, and so on. In many cases it is the only time they will leave the home or village that day. The solution proposed by the clean stoves campaign reminds me of the culture surrounding sexual violence in the United States, where rather than working to attack the root causes of such crimes, we instead teach women that it is unsafe to go out late, or to dress in a certain way.

In order to make any progress, I agree with the authors when they suggest we need qualitative data that capture the changing nature of societies coming out of war. We must first identify the information we lack in order to move forward wisely and effectively.

According to recruitment services company Zippia , 79 percent of employees leave their companies because they don’t feel appreciated by leaders, and upwards of 69 percent believe they’d work harder if recognized. In addition, only 33 percent report feeling engaged in the workplace.

Companies also lack focus on leadership development. Zippia reports that 77 percent struggle to find and develop leaders, and only five percent implement leadership development at all levels.

Developing a business plan is an important step as it helps in considering important factors and future course of action for the business. A business plan is a written statement that has all the information that a business is expected to follow. A successful business plan is available developed on real life facts and assumptions. Therefore it is required to make in-depth research into various factors that may affects its profitability and credibility during the business application (Trevifio & Brown, 2004).

The hardest challenge that I faced when developing a business plan was specifying positioning. The positioning of the product needs to be done such that the customers notice the products and could easily place their orders using online medium. This way selecting the best method for positioning was a real hard challenge to develop. Positioning was done by selecting the most popular online websites that supports businesses including eBay and amazon. Thus the products were kept on sale through online medium. Also the positioning of the old books was made specifically for the low end product segment, wherein a discount of nearly 45% was offered to the customers. Along with that the free shipment of the product and flat courier service was offered to tempt the customers (Mintzberg, 1994). This way the positioning was featured by following issues.

The attraction of the customers towards new business is among the toughest job in the present day world. People are brand crazy and have their personal likes and thoughts on specific products. These customers can be attracted to new business only when they are offered something extra than others.

Competition:

The competition in the market is so hard that the customers are have great offers to surf before making purchase. The pricing, advertisement and backing of company brand name all has created so much completion for the new entrant that it is really hard to find a space in the market for new business set up.

Technology:

The technology used for placing orders and offering assistance to the customers is quickly changing. Due to this reason Amazon and ebay have become the best way to promote business The technology used by them is considered among the best and latest method of supporting business activities and meeting up to customer expectations.

Uncertainty:

A lot of uncertainty exists in the market. The trend of the customers changes every now and then. Therefore it is really hard to decide on the future of selling old books. Therefore its really hard to decide on investing in new business that is based on selling of old books.

Therefore financing for inventory that places right products in right amount has to be decided in the business plan (Kickul & Neuman, 2000).

Unrealistic assumptions:

The business plan is actually based on assumptions. Now any of these assumptions can proved unrealistic in the real world. The customer trend, choice and market acceptance to new entrants all may face either no acceptance or more than just acceptance. Therefore the assumptions may prove to be unrealistic while developing a business plan.

Inadequate research.

A business plan requires a lot of research. Lack or inadequate research may lead to issues and problems in application and non-realistic decisions can be achieved. Hence the business plan developed requires more in-depth knowledge and research which has actually made the business plan more challenging to developed.

Balancing quality with growth:

It is rather a difficult task to balance quality with growth. Thus in a business we can only assume to maintain quality with growth but in reality its really hard to manage for finance, cut down profits and balance quality (Fisk, 2010).

The best way to overcome these challenges is by following a certain criteria for developing a business plan stated as below.

Stage I: Identifying the various options available to the business.

At this first stage the various options available to the business are identified. These includes the opportunities available in online selling, creating brand image, placing products and services in the market, fair pricing, offering huge discounts and offers etc. This way identification of the best option out of the various other options is done in this stage.

Stage II: Measuring the feasibility of each option to the business:

Measuring of each options separately and calculating its feasibility is another step. This way the options available to the business are measured in terms of benefit, profit and outcome that could be expected.

Stage III: Realizing the targets of the business.

The most important lesson that I learnt after developing a business plan as an entrepreneur is that it is very easy and simple to talk about business ideas and yet very hard develop. This is because of the following pre-requisites that needs to be considered while developing a successful business idea.

Writing down everything:

A business plan should be well written. It should cover everything that could bring out successful application for the business. Writing a business plan also helps in discussing the motives with experts so that the changes can be brought in through suggestions and feedback. Also it helps in describing the actual objective of the business and deciding proper plan of action that it has to follow.

Considering various factors seriously:

Various factors should be considered seriously in the business plan. This includes the factors that may affect the business like competitor response, customer trend, product pricing policy etc.

Making realistic assumptions:

Making realistic assumptions helps the business plan to stay in alignment with the real world. Thus whatever we assume may not prove correct but through the realistic assumptions we can formulate a business plan that actually considers real life issues and problems.

Taking important decisions in advance.

A business plan helps in deciding on the important decisions. This way it gives enough time to think, consider and reconsider on various issues and problem so that on time decisions can be taken which could actually help achieve the desired goal and targets for the business.

Making early plans for dealing with competitions.

Business plan if developed carefully could help in making early plans for dealing with the competition. This way the company could easily expect on the market response and decide on the actions that can be taken to fight back competitor’s policy.

Keeping target of achieving customer satisfaction:

Business plan helps in deciding on the customers response from the business. This way the target of achieving customers satisfaction during the actual application of business plan can be decided. Therefore the business policy, motives and plan can be developed such that the customer expectations can be met.

Focusing on improving business:

The focus on improving the business while meeting its objectives can be targeted through the business plan. Therefore the various stages of business can be identified and the most suitable action plan that will help achieve estimated goals and targets can be achieved.

Estimating of goals and targets for the business can be done by developing a business plan that considers all factors. The business plan therefore could help in deciding the target growth and development that a business should achieve within a limited time frame.

The business plan should make arrangements for the unforeseen contingencies that may rise due to any reason. The unforeseen contingencies can include requirement for finance, changing customer trend and behavior, increasing competition in the market, competitive pricing by the competitor etc. Thus to fight back the real life situations the action plans should be developed well in advance so that the business could deal easily with this issues and problems that may rise in future. We developed a business plan on automobile industry and the product that was selected by us was a safety distance device. The name of the organization that is introducing this device is CarSafe. Developing this entire business plan was a wonderful experience and the core concepts of management and entrepreneurship were applied when the plan was developed. In the initial stages the group members were very confused about the plan and which product we should select. Ultimately, I came up with an idea that we should select a safety device which is not a hypothetical product and it’s realistic in nature which can easily be marketed. After that all of us showed a cohesive attitude and collaborated with each other and ultimately the final plan was developed.

I contributed in certain parts and the initial part of the plan was quite easy in which I selected different sources and gave an overview about the automobile industry. Then we have to come with the core idea that what will be the actual product. All the members of the group brainstormed together and I discussed the idea that we would develop a safety device for speedy automobiles with infra-red technology. This novel idea was appreciated by all the members but its implementation part was quite difficult and all of the group members were very worried about that how we can analyze this device properly. But through proper collaboration we have tried to develop a proper business plan that is simple and every major aspect is covered in this plan. The analysis related to entry and growth strategy was done by me and I presented a forward looking approach as far as the promotional activity of the plan was concerned. Discount of 15% or more was offered to people and emphasis will be laid on the Asian markets.

The discussion with the group members was online and it created certain confusions and conflicts with the members but ultimately for the sake of the group all confusions and conflicts were resolved and the plan was divided into different parts. One of the most difficult parts of the plan was to identify the market segment and the size of the market. We all face difficulties in that and a hefty amount of time was consumed in doing the market research. Finally, all the group members decided that the organization would target high-end car market segment in which people would drive luxury cars. A yardstick approach was used by all the members in determining what would be the competitive advantage of the product and I suggested that a customized approach would be better idea for this product. All the group members agreed on that and ultimately it was decided that the product would be customized.

Therefore, on collective it was a wonderful experience working online with the group members and developing a business plan. I practically experienced the phenomenon of management, conflict resolution and group management. All the members were quite cooperative with each other and the group meetings and gatherings that were organized online helped a lot. We as a group enjoyed this activity but there were certain parts in the business plan which was quite difficult to develop like the financial plan and evaluation of the market size. The reason for that was the product is actually a new product and evaluating its target market on real ground is a difficult task. The most difficult task was to estimate the costs and calculate the how the market would react to the product.

The organization of group and how to manage the group was learned in this activity. Moreover, I also evaluated the fact that a leader is necessary in a group and without a proper leader the members of the group cannot work well. Conflicts are managed by the leader and the performance of the group is based on the leader because the leader joins the group together. One of the flaws of our project was we have not selected a proper leader for our group and that is the reason why we face difference of opinion in the group. But, ultimately we all managed the business plan and we have tried our level best to produce the best possible results.

This method helped me in identifying the target market that will buy my services at the coffee shop. I made sure that the questions supplemented my research (Anonymous 2011, pp. 32). However, the method was not feasible as the product was not fully finished version. Thus, this method had the possibility of deviation in results when real product is launched in the market. I have however made it priority to implement this method as it can help me in changing my product according to their needs and demands (B2B International 2012, pp. 57). I also implemented SWOT analysis in the business planning procedure so that I am aware of latent potentials, strengths, weaknesses and threats of this business. This approach helped me in recognizing the core competencies as well as possible problems. Another option was to do competitive analysis to analyze the market. I listed all similar products and assessed the findings from these products by identifying the positives and negatives of these products (Anonymous 2010, p.10). The business plan I formulated primarily was designed using qualitative research. After applying interview techniques, focus groups and pre analysed information of the coffee industry in UK, I generated my findings and outcomes (Burgess 2008, p.16). By using qualitative research, I was able to exactly identify the behaviours and demands of potential customers. It helped me in deciding what should be areas to study and what can be principal concerns in starting up a coffee business. Thus, the study unfolded naturally giving me detailed and comprehensive data. Qualitative analysis acts as a catalyst to produce a complete, detailed description (B2B International 2012, pp. 65).
