This paper provides a quick overview of Nepal that spans its origins, different historical accounts, demographics, and current socio-political context. Some of the major political activities that have been followed by important civil uprisings and instability are also covered. Other works contained herein that have been consulted include online sources available across the internet and other media portals. While some of the descriptions and explanations included are from the author’s own personal experience and analysis as a citizen, most of the works are assembled from various sources comprising online portals and blogs, news magazines, official archives, and the digital library. Most of the facts and figures as well as historical accounts have been assembled from various governmental and non-governmental online sources. The paper aims to provide its reader a quick guide about Nepal in its various aspects. The future health of Nepal rests greatly in the hope of creating a new constitution, a process started in 2008. Naturally beautiful, Nepal today is worse off than ever before. In spite of (or perhaps because of) this, Nepalese have huge hope and faith in the upcoming Constitution, and are impatiently looking forward to experiencing a new start in the country because of it.

This lecture traces some of the ways in which Nepal has been imagined, starting over 1500 years ago when the name referred to the Kathmandu Valley ruled by the Licchavi dynasty. That spatialised hierarchical conception (‘Nepal mandala’) is contrasted with later ideas of Nepal as interface, empire, nation-state, and multicultural federal republic. At each stage, Nepal has been imagined as made up of different kinds of people. In the modern period formal and official categorisations have become increasingly egalitarian and, recently, even explicitly antihierarchical. Since 1990, ethnic identities have been massively transformed and politicised. Entirely new ‘macro categories’ have come into existence. However, the old order has not simply disappeared, but remains ‘back stage’, reworked; it can be discerned in informal but still powerful hierarchies of language and national belonging.

A visit to the Kathmandu valley, the political and cultural centre of Nepal after the constituent assembly elections brings the author in touch with leaders of the major political parties, public intellectuals, and the representatives of commerce and industry. This is the third and final part of the author’s diary of his travels in Nepal during May.

This paper is an English version of the author’s farewell lecture held on the 20th of July, 2016, in the old lecture hall (“Alte Aula”) of Heidelberg University. It has been translated from the printed German text ‘Nepal in der Welt’ which appeared in 2017. A survey of Nepal and Nepal studies from precolonial times until present, the lecture sheds light on quite a range of topics and raises issues that are relevant for area studies just as well as for many other academic disciplines. Axel Michaels’ main concern in all this is to discuss ways of understanding the ‘other’. Simultaneously, true to the format of a farewell lecture, the paper contains some retrospection on Michaels’ involments, scholarly and otherwise, with Nepal.

Within the modern world that has come into being, changes have taken place as the effect of dominant political power by which new possibilities are constructed and old ones destroyed. The changes do not reflect a simple extension of the ranges of individual choice, but the creation of conditions in which only new (i.e., modern) choices can be made. The reason for this is that the changes involve the reformation of subjectivities and the reorganization of social fields in which subjects act and are acted upon. The modern state – imperial, colonial, postcolonial – has been crucial to these processes of construction/destruction. – Talal Asad, Conscripts of Western Civilization (1992:337)

Introduction to Nepali
Introduction.
You now know how to greet someone in Nepali . Nepali is a language spoken in Nepal, India, and other places, and is the lingua franca and the official language of Nepal. Nepal is a small country located between India and China, and is home to the highest mountain in the world, the Mount Everest. Nepali is a fascinating language with a rich cultural heritage, and learning it will open doors to understanding Nepali literature, music, and traditions.
As you start your journey of learning Nepali, you’ll discover that it’s a language full of warmth and friendliness. Nepali people are known for their hospitality, and speaking their language is a sure way to make new friends and connect with the local community.
So let’s get ready to explore the beauty of Nepali, learn new phrases, and immerse yourself in a new culture. Let’s dive in!
FAMILY AND HISTORY
There are more than a thousand languages in the world. However, many of them share features with each other. This allows us to group them into categories called families . Just like how societies evolve, languages evolve over time as well. The same language now will be very different a hundred years from now, even if we still call it by its name; like people, languages constantly evolve, change and adapt according to needs and time.
Nepali is an Indo-Aryan language belonging to the Indo-European family . This family includes many languages spoken across the Indian subcontinent, Europe and the Americas, such as Hindi and Persian, and even English, Spanish and Croatian! A long time ago, people who spoke Proto-Indo-European (PIE) – the ancestor of all Indo-European languages – migrated from a common origin near the Caucasus Mountains and took their language with them. As time went on, PIE started to morph and change, giving rise to many prominent ancient languages like Latin and Ancient Greek. One of those languages was Sanskrit , whose vernacular form, Prakrit, eventually evolved into various modern Indic languages like Hindi, Marathi and of course, Nepali.
Thus, it is no surprise that the bulk of Nepali words and grammar comes from Sanskrit, so if you are familiar with other Indic languages, Nepali may appear very familiar to you. However, due to Nepal’s unique location, geography and diversity, other languages like Tibetan and Nepal Bhasa (the language of the Newar people) have shaped Nepali to become the unique language it is today. In this modern day and age, the influence of other languages (notably English) continues to shape how we communicate in Nepali.
LEARNING THE CULTURE
To learn a language is to also learn the culture, customs and idiosyncrasies of the society and the people who speak the language. As we learn Nepali, we will also learn bits and pieces of the culture in Nepal , either as snippets (example below) or as off-topic guffgaff , where we look at what makes Nepali people well…Nepali.
info | Did you know that Nepali is the only language that starts with an N – and ends with – epali ?
IS NEPALI HARD TO LEARN?
Nepali is a category IV language, meaning it is fairly ‘medium-hard’-ish in learning difficulty (for a native English speaker). This would make it about as hard as learning Polish, Croatian, Thai etc. [ source ]
However, don’t let this deter you! No language is hard if you are fully committed to it. Nepali is fairly straightforward in many things and with enough practice and dedication, you will be able to master this language with ease. Remember that the key in anything is perseverance; no one will wake up one day and say “Hey, I now know the language fluently!” Like good wine, it takes time, but the effort will be worth it.
Everyone has a different approach when learning a new language; some prefer immersion, while others do better with flashcards and exercises. No matter what method you choose, the key to learning a language is simple: practice , practice, practice. There is no replacing where practice can take you, and a little Nepali everyday will take you a long way. Make sure you know your boundaries, never hesitate to speak even a little broken Nepali and have your Nepali friends help your practice. There are many ways to learn a language, so always give yourself patience, time, and a well-deserved break when things get too difficult or hard. Finally, always have fun when learning! 🙂

I am really excited about the journey I am about to take. I Have Nepali friends who run our local deli and I have known them many years and would live to converse with them using Nepali.
Hi Darren! Thank you for your kind words. It is nice to know that you are learning Nepali to be able to speak in Nepali with your friends; I find that really sweet and heartwarming 🙂
I work in a migrant resource centre and work alongside a lot of Nepali speaking staff from both Bhutan and Nepal. I would love to be able to have conversations with them in their first language for a change.

This multi-dimensional cultural heritage includes the cultural diversity of various ethnic, tribal, and social groups. Nepali culture also manifests itself in various ways, including music, dance, religion, festivals, and food.
Religious Traditions Of Nepal
Nepal’s Buddhist traditions are very old and unique. It is because of the great respect of people towards Buddha. Buddha was born in the Nepal heritage society at Lumbini in Kathmandu in an old and well-known Shiva temple. However, you can find other templates, Buddhist monasteries, and worship sites for other religious groups throughout Nepal.
Nepalese celebrate many Hindu and Buddhist philosophical ethos and traditions. These traditions and ethos include Kashmir Shaivism, Tibetan Buddhism, and tantric traditions, among others. However, Tantric traditions, including the practice of animal sacrifices, are not much functional in Nepal.
The Himalayas kingdom is the home of the Gods, according to religious groups, and has a particular association with Lord Shiva. With time, Nepal slightly changes the broad categories of Buddhist stupas on archaeological sites. The relative status of family life in Nepal includes the deep belief of Hindu and Buddhists in old customs and religious understandings.
Ethnic Relations
Historically, in Nepali society, different ethnic groups, Hindus, Buddhists, and animist ethnic groups, were merged into a caste order. High caste Hindus are at the top of the class system. Then Mongolian ethnic groups are below the higher cast. Untouchable Hindu castes are at the bottom.
The Kathmandu Valleys have a caste system that is merging into the national caste system of Nepal. Moreover, a large community of Kathmandu involves the people of Indian and Tibetan groups. Large necklaces, wide cuff bracelets, and heavy earrings are common in Northern India’s Tibetan styles.

On special occasions, dance traditions are a part of the Nepalese lifestyle. Dances on the Indian subcontinent began in Lord Shiva’s residence. It all started in the Himalayan Kingdom of Nepal, where he performed the Tandava dance.

One of the important festivals is Dashain, and it is Nepal’s most extended celebration. According to the lunar calendar, Dashain usually occurs between late September and mid-October. It is “a Day of Demonic Victory.”
With religious traditions followed by many other religious groups, the Nepali culture celebrates Buddha Jayanti’s day. Buddha Jayanti is one of the other special occasions in most festivals that celebrate the birth of Buddha.
Sherpas, mostly found at higher elevations and in the Mount Everest region, celebrate an important festival of Mani Rimdu. People celebrate it to mark the findings of Hindu and Buddhist traditions. Many tourists of the Nepal tourism board love visiting the place because of the traditional social hierarchy.
Gai Jatra is another well-known celebration (cow festival). The cows (very sacred animals) carnival is referred to as Gai Jatra. However, the celebration is held to remember loved ones who have died. To march along the street, people sing, dance, and dress up like cows. It is an event held to help people cope with the loss of a loved one.
Nepali Food And Culture
There is no specific cooking style in Nepali food . Food habits, on the other hand, vary by area. The general population of the younger generation prefers rice along with wine.
Moreover, Nepalis often cook food to present their Prime Minister’s best food on special occasions, having ritualized presentations. Some of the Nepali cultural food consist of items like dal (lentil soup), bhat (boiled rice), and tarkari (curried vegetables).
