Background The Indian culture is as grand and exciting as it sounds. India is located in southern Asia and encompasses a variety of people and traditions. Let us take a closer look at what distinguishes the Indian culture from any other.

Customs &Traditions • The Indian culture is rich in customs and traditions • These traditions and customs include: - house warming ceremonies - wedding customs - naamkaran

House Warming Ceremony Griha Pravesh is a ceremony performed when one first enters the house. This may be because it is a new home, coming back from vacation or after having renovated the house. The family enters the house on a specified day according to the astrological calendar. The ceremonies include poojah’s and priests. Depending on why you are re-entering the house, there are different actions to perform.

Wedding Ceremony The wedding ceremony lasts for longer than one day and includes various traditions that need to be performed. • Once a couple agrees to wed, there is a Roka that announces that the couple has found their soul mates. • Next is the Sagai, which is the tikka ceremony. This is performed a week to ten days before the wedding.

Continued… • The sangeet is an event that is put on by the girl’s family. Few members of the groom’s side is invited. This is a celebration with song and dance. • The Mehendi is a henna ceremony. All the girls in the bridal party have henna put on their hands and choose bangles to wear. • Finally the days before the wedding the bride rests with complete relaxation. The actual wedding day takes place in a designated venue. The bride’s side welcomes the groom’s side, known as the baarat

Naamkaran The naamkaran is a naming ceremony that takes place 12 days after the day of birth. This is mostly a women’s ceremony. They place the child in a cradle while everyone gathers around singing traditional songs and dancing. Children’s names are based on Hindu Raashis because it is considered auspicious.

Classical Indian Dances • The Bhangra began as a dance to celebrate the harvest. Movements of the dance are suppose to depict the cycle of plouging, sowing, and reaping. • Kathak is a North Indian classical dance. In ancient times, storytellers used mime and gesture for dramatic effect. This eventually evolved into a dance form.

Conclusion The Indian culture is full of variety and diversity. Traditions and cultures are different from what we are used to. Hopefully with our presentation you’ve gotten a better glimpse of an unfamiliar world. Information provided by: www.indiaparenting.com

powerpoint presentation on indian culture and heritage

India, a land steeped in history and culture, is home to a wealth of heritage sites that capture the imagination of travellers from around the globe. Not only ancient temples, there are majestic forts to marvel at, wherein each site tells a story of India's rich past and diverse heritage. Here are some of India's most visited and remarkable heritage sites that you can plan to visit to explore their significance and the reasons behind their enduring allure.

Taj Mahal, Agra

Undoubtedly, the Taj Mahal stands as India's most iconic symbol of love and architectural splendour. Commissioned by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, this breathtaking white marble mausoleum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that you try visiting at least once in your lifetime. Its intricate craftsmanship, symmetrical design, and ethereal beauty draw millions of visitors each year, and offers a glimpse into the opulence of Mughal architecture and the enduring power of love.

Jaipur City Palace, Rajasthan

Nestled in the heart of Rajasthan's capital, Jaipur, lies the majestic City Palace, a magnificent blend of Rajput, Mughal, and European architectural styles. Built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the palace complex encompasses courtyards, gardens, and palatial structures adorned with exquisite artwork and historical artefacts. Visitors are captivated by the grandeur of the palace, which proudly showcases Rajasthan's royal legacy and vibrant cultural heritage.

Ajanta and Ellora Caves, Maharashtra

Immersed in ancient history and profound spiritual meaning, the Ajanta and Ellora Caves stand as testament to India's vibrant religious heritage and artistic brilliance. Hewn into the rock faces of Maharashtra, these age-old cave systems exhibit extraordinary Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain temples, monasteries, and sculptures dating back to the 2nd century BCE. Elaborate carvings and frescoes within depict tales from Indian mythology, providing a glimpse into the spiritual customs of times long past, drawing interest from both history aficionados and pilgrims.

Khajuraho Group of Monuments, Madhya Pradesh

Renowned for its stunning depiction of human emotions and sensuality, the Khajuraho Group of Monuments is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that showcases India's architectural brilliance and cultural diversity. Built by the Chandela dynasty between the 9th and 11th centuries, these intricately carved temples feature elaborate sculptures depicting various aspects of life, love, and spirituality. Despite the passage of centuries, the Khajuraho temples continue to mesmerise visitors with their exquisite craftsmanship and timeless appeal.

Hampi, Karnataka

Nestled amid the rugged terrain of Karnataka lies the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hampi, a sprawling complex of ruins that was once the glorious capital of the Vijayanagara Empire. Steeped in history and architectural splendour, Hampi's ancient temples, royal enclosures, and boulder-strewn landscape offer a captivating glimpse into India's mediaeval past. Visitors can wander through the labyrinthine streets, marvel at the towering gopurams, and soak in the serene ambiance of this living heritage site.

World Heritage Day 2024: Explore some of the most architecturally significant caves in India

From ajanta caves to krishna mandapam, here are some interesting facts about india’s ancient caves.

powerpoint presentation on indian culture and heritage

World Heritage Day, also known as the International Monuments and Sites Day, is observed on 18 April every year to celebrate some of the world’s most unique and stunning architectural masterpieces.

Several historic monuments and sites present in India are in dire need of preservation, to keep the cultural heritage intact. On this day, several organisations, societies, governments, and individuals come together to advocate the preservation of these marvels and increase public awareness about their significance.

powerpoint presentation on indian culture and heritage

When we talk about historical structures, we often think of elaborate monuments and temples that boast of resplendent architecture and intricate detailing. However, we often forget the significance of ancient caves.

India is home to several of some of the most fascinating and historically rich cave complexes, many of which have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These caves offer a unique glimpse into ancient cultures, religious practices, and remarkable architectural feats. Here are some interesting facts about these structures.

Ajanta Caves

ajanta caves

A masterpiece of Buddhist art, Ajanta caves are located in Maharashtra and are renowned for their exquisite Buddhist rock-cut cave monuments. These caves date back to the 2nd century BCE and were created as retreats for Buddhist monks.

Festive offer

It is believed that these Buddhist monks took shelter in these caves during monsoons as they were forbidden from travelling during this period of the year. While living in the caves they spent their time and effort painting the walls of the caves, depicting Buddhist legends , scenes from daily life, and ornate sculptures of deities.

The caves not only feature some of the most awe-inspiring paintings giving a glimpse of Buddhist beliefs, but also contain mound-like structures called stupas as well as large pillars.

However, what’s worth noting is that Buddha had always preached against sculpting and painting images of him. He explained that the purpose of living life is to work towards achieving nirvana .

Ellora Caves

Kailasa_Temple_Cave_16_Hindu_Cave_Ellora_Caves_India_-_panoramio_(5)

The Ellora Caves are also situated in Maharashtra and are a remarkable fusion of Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain monuments.

These caves were carved out of solid rock between the 6th and 10th centuries CE. The site includes 34 caves featuring stunning sculptures and intricately detailed architecture.

The Kailash Temple in Ellora, carved from a single rock and dedicated to Lord Shiva, particularly attracts visitors from all over the world due to its sheer size and intricate detailing.

Another significant structure within the complex is cave 10, or the Vishvakarma cave, which consists of some of the most exquisite Buddhist sculptures.

Cave 32 is known for its significance within the Jain community as it depicts some of the most important principles of the religion such as non-violence and simplicity in life. It is a series of shrines dedicated to Mahavira and other Jain divinities spanning over two storeys. The sculptures also depict scenes from the lives of Jain Tirthankaras.

Elephanta Caves

elephanta caves

Another architecturally significant cave complex situated in Maharashtra, Elephanta caves are just a short boat ride from Mumbai.

This site features a collection of rock-cut temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. These caves, dating back to the 5th century CE, are situated on Elephanta Island and are famous for their colossal sculptures.

What’s worth noting is that the island on which Elephanta Caves are situated was originally called Gharapuri. However, after the Portuguese conquered the region, they renamed it as Elephanta, as they erected a large stone elephant on the island.

The most notable among the network of caves is the Trimurti , a massive three-headed statue representing the aspects of Shiva as the highest form of God in Hinduism fulfilling the roles of a creator, preserver, and destroyer.

Varaha Cave Temple

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by @st_emiliano

In the coastal town of Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu stands the Varaha Cave Temple, a UNESCO-listed monument carved out of a single rock in the 7th century CE.

One of the best examples of the creativity and intricacy of ancient Pallava architecture and sculpture, this cave temple is adorned with intricate bas-relief sculptures depicting various forms of Lord Vishnu, including his avatar or incarnation as Varaha (boar) to save Goddess Earth.

The detailing and craftsmanship of the sculptures stand as evidence of the artistic mastery of ancient Indian artisans and sculptors.

Krishna Mandapam

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Spandana Harish (@spandanaharish)

Another significant UNESCO World Heritage site in the Southern part of India is the Krishna Mandapam in Mahabalipuram. Located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, in the Kancheepuram district, it is another rock-cut cave temple featuring some of the most awe-inspiring bas relief sculptures, protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Dedicated to Lord Krishna, this cave temple features beautiful bas-reliefs depicting scenes from Hindu mythology , including well-known tales of Lord Krishna lifting the Govardhan Hill.

There are other images in the cave that include Lord Krishna in a playful mood with the gopis or milkmaids, carrying water pots on their heads, and several other scenes from the Hindu mythology.

Its objective is to inspire people and local communities to value cultural heritage in their lives. Along with monument preservation, the day also aims to increase public awareness of the diversity and vulnerability of cultural heritage.

Theme Of World Heritage Day

Since 1983, the International Council on Monuments and Sites has set a theme around which events are centred on the day. The theme for World Heritage Day 2024 is "Disasters & Conflicts Through the Lens of the Venice Charter".

"The Venice Charter emerged in 1964, two decades after WWII and in an age that promised limitless progress and economic development. Six decades later, we face a climate emergency, a growing number of natural disasters as well as conflicts destroying cultural sites and displacing communities on a massive scale. ICOMOS will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Venice Charter in 2024, which will feature as a key narrative to ICOMOS events through the year. The IDMS will kick off the official celebration, leading up to the anniversary of the Venice Charter on 31 May," the organisation said on its website.

NCIC Heritage Festival celebrates East Indian cultural legacy

NGC Trinidad and Tobago Sweet Tassa International -

BAVINA SOOKDEO

Charai Veti – "Keep Moving" – will be the theme for the National Council of Indian Culture’s (NCIC) Heritage Festival 2024.

The NCIC said in a release the Heritage Festival, being hosted through its Heritage Centre, “aims to play a vital role in preserving, promoting, and celebrating the East Indian cultural heritage, identity and legacy while fostering greater understanding, appreciation, and unity among the diverse communities of Trinidad and Tobago.”

The organisation said the festival commemorates the rich cultural legacy bestowed on TT by the Indian indentured labourers who arrived during the 19th and early 20th centuries to work on sugar plantations.

It also honours Indian Arrival Day, celebrated on May 30 since 1995, and Indian Heritage Month (May).

The NCIC, a non-governmental organisation, is dedicated to fostering the development and promotion of East Indian and Indo-Trinidadian culture. Established in 1964, it has been instrumental in showcasing this heritage, notably through its flagship event, the Divali Nagar, which has been held since 1986.

NCIC’s first vice president, Surujdeo Mangaroo, said, “The theme of the NCIC Heritage Month, Charai Veti – Keep Moving, resonates deeply with me. It beautifully encapsulates the spirit of resilience and determination exhibited by our girmitiya (Indians who journeyed abroad as indentured labourers under an agreement) forefathers, who persevered through immense challenges to pave the way for future generations. Their unwavering commitment to 'keep moving' despite adversities is a testament to the indomitable human spirit and serves as an inspiration for us all."

The festival, he said, will "celebrate living traditions, but it will also exemplify the innovation and creativity that enabled such traditions to thrive in a new environment while preserving their cultural identity.

It honours, he said, not only "the resilience and contributions of those who endured indentured labour," but also their descendants.

Mangaroo urged, “As we observe Indian Heritage Month, let us come together as a community to celebrate our cultural diversity and heritage."

He said the festival presents "a wonderful opportunity for us to connect, learn, and appreciate the vibrant traditions passed down to us by our ancestors.

"Through a diverse range of events and activities, including cultural performances, exhibitions, and culinary competitions, we can deepen our understanding of our shared heritage and foster greater unity among all communities."

The festival will offer a variety of programmes. One is a food festival which will include competitions for pholourie, pepper roti, and kitchree.

Additionally, a trade fair organised by the NCIC will offer Indian wear and other items throughout May.

powerpoint presentation on indian culture and heritage

Mangaroo encouraged everyone to participate in the NCIC Heritage Festival "and embrace the theme as we honour the legacy of our forefathers and chart a path forward guided by their resilience and determination.

The festival will be held at the NCIC Nagar, Narsaloo Ramaya Marg, Chaguanas, from May 4-June 1.

All events are free and open to the public. For more information, call 789-9101/ 381-1069 or visit NCIC’s social media pages.
