Measuring Journal Impact

There are a number of impact rankings given to journals to attempt to measure how impactful, or great the reach of a journal is.  Higher impact journals are generally able to publish the most rigorous, quality research articles, so looking at journal rankings might help you determine what journals to follow and search for sources for your research.

Journal rankings are also problematic, and several different formulas to attempt to measure impact have been developed.  The different formulas each put different emphasis on different things.  Three of the measures for ranking journals are:

  • Journal Impact Factor (JIF) Journal Impact Factor reflects the yearly average number of citations that recent articles published in a given journal received. Find the Journal Impact Factor and the Eigenfactor in Journal Citation Reports.
  • Eigenfactor Eigenfactor determine the importance of a journal in a given year (based on five years of citation data). Find the Eigenfactor and Journal Impact Factor in Journal Citation Reports.
  • SCImago Journal & Country Rank SCImago Journal & Country Rank provides journal rankings based on three-year's worth of citation data from SCOPUS, a major Elsevier scientific abstracting and indexing database. SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) indicators are based on a refinement of Google's PageRank algorithm.

Find High Impact Physics Journals

Follow these steps to find ranked lists of physics journals:

Journal Impact Factor & Eigenfactor:

  • Visit InCites Journal Citation Reports .
  • Click on "Browse by Journal."
  • Expand "Select Categories" and scroll through the list until you arrive at the physics categories.  You can choose one or several of these categories including applied physics; atomic, molecular & chemical physics; condensed matter physics; fluids & plasma physics; mathematical physics; multidisciplinary physics; nuclear physics; and particles & fields physics.
  • Once you've made your selection(s) scroll down to the bottom and hit "submit."
  • You'll get a chart that generally defaults to ranking the journals by Journal Impact Factor, highest to lowest.  You can click on Journal Impact Factor and Eigenfactor to change how the chart is ranked.

  • Visit BrowZine's list of Physics Sciences Journals, set to sort by SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) .

Foundations of Physics

An International Journal Devoted to the Conceptual Bases and Fundamental Theories of Modern Physics

Foundations of Physics is a single-blind peer-reviewed journal that provides a forum for discussing the conceptual structures and foundational aspects at the highest professional level, among scientists, mathematicians and philosophers. The journal welcomes in particular:

  • Contributions on special and general relativity, quantum theory, classical and quantum field theory, quantum gravity, unified theories, thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, cosmology and information theory.
  • Review-type articles, which may be in the form of perspective papers or essays. Prospective authors of review-type articles are encouraged to first contact the Editor-in-Chief with their proposal.
  • Proposals for topical collections that review novel developments from different perspectives.
