There is a correlation between a country's educational system quality and its economic status, with developed nations offering higher quality education.
The U.S., despite ranking high in educational system surveys, falls behind in math and science scores compared to many other countries.
Educational system adequacy varies globally, with some countries struggling due to internal conflicts, economic challenges, or underfunded programs.
While education levels vary from country to country, there is a clear correlation between the quality of a country's educational system and its general economic status and overall well-being. In general, developing nations tend to offer their citizens a higher quality of education than the least developed nations do, and fully developed nations offer the best quality of education of all. Education is clearly a vital contributor to any country's overall health.
According to the Global Partnership for Education , education is considered to be a human right and plays a crucial role in human, social, and economic development . Education promotes gender equality, fosters peace, and increases a person's chances of having more and better life and career opportunities.
"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." — Nelson Mandela
The annual Best Countries Report , conducted by US News and World Report, BAV Group, and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania , reserves an entire section for education. The report surveys thousands of people across 78 countries, then ranks those countries based upon the survey's responses. The education portion of the survey compiles scores from three equally-weighted attributes: a well-developed public education system, would consider attending university there, and provides top-quality education. As of 2023, the top ten countries based on education rankings are:

Ironically, despite the United States having the best-surveyed education system on the globe, U.S students consistently score lower in math and science than students from many other countries. According to a Business Insider report in 2018, the U.S. ranked 38th in math scores and 24th in science. Discussions about why the United States' education rankings have fallen by international standards over the past three decades frequently point out that government spending on education has failed to keep up with inflation.
It's also worthwhile to note that while the Best Countries study is certainly respectable, other studies use different methodologies or emphasize different criteria, which often leads to different results. For example, the Global Citizens for Human Rights' annual study measures ten levels of education from early childhood enrollment rates to adult literacy. Its final 2020 rankings look a bit different:
Most findings and ranking regarding education worldwide involve adult literacy rates and levels of education completed. However, some studies look at current students and their abilities in different subjects.
One of the most-reviewed studies regarding education around the world involved 470,000 fifteen-year-old students. Each student was administered tests in math, science, and reading similar to the SAT or ACT exams (standardized tests used for college admissions in the U.S.) These exam scores were later compiled to determine each country's average score for each of the three subjects. Based on this study, China received the highest scores , followed by Korea, Finland , Hong Kong , Singapore , Canada , New Zealand , Japan , Australia and the Netherlands .
On the down side, there are many nations whose educational systems are considered inadequate. This could be due to internal conflict, economic problems, or underfunded programs. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization's Education for All Global Monitoring Report ranks the following countries as having the world's worst educational systems:

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue placed No. 1 among U.S. public universities and was named the No. 9 most recognized university in the world in the 2024-25 Global University Visibility (GUV) rankings , which were announced on Tuesday (July 16).
Conducted by the Washington, D.C.-based firm American Caldwell, the GUV rankings placed Purdue ahead of institutions such as the University of Michigan; the University of California, Berkeley; Yale University; and the University of Toronto (Canada). Purdue came in as the No. 2 public university in the world, behind only Universidade de São Paulo (Brazil); was the top-ranked university in the Big Ten; and outranked every other Indiana university by at least 90 spots overall.
“This tremendous standing once again underscores Purdue’s sterling reputation worldwide,” Purdue President Mung Chiang said. “No matter their area of expertise, people at Purdue are persistently pursuing solutions to most-pressing challenges, impacting lives and enhancing our society. This recognition is really about those Boilermakers, as our marketing and communications team is merely amplifying their tireless efforts in making Purdue the most consequential public university by sharing those stories with audiences everywhere.”
The GUV ranking offers a comprehensive evaluation of a university’s global visibility. This year’s ranking incorporated more metrics for tracking each university, but the methodology remained rooted in six key indicators: the frequency and quality of universities’ news mentions; their online footprint; their social media following; the level of public interest; the number of web citations; and the number of website visitors. Purdue University performed well in those categories, notably generating nearly 16 million visits to the recently enhanced Purdue.edu — the seventh-highest number of website visitors of any university across the globe — leading to its impressive placement among the world’s most recognized institutions.
In the public interest category, Purdue continues to bolster its worldwide presence and prestige through impactful international partnerships with industry and educational leaders. In April, SK hynix Inc., a market leader in chips manufacturing, announced plans to invest close to $4 billion to build an advanced packaging fabrication and R&D facility for AI products in the Purdue Research Park. Purdue is actively adding to an ever-expanding list of global initiatives with industry leaders in Japan , France , India , Korea , Belgium , Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic as well as educational partners in Greece and England .
Purdue also is the only U.S. higher education institution selected as a leading university partner in all three national hubs funded through the CHIPS and Science Act and announced in 2023-24. Those hubs are the Heartland BioWorks , the Midwest Alliance for Clean Hydrogen and the Silicon Crossroads Microelectronics Commons .
In visibility, innovation and academic excellence, Purdue has repeatedly received acclaim and praise. The No. 9 GUV ranking is the latest addition to this impressive list over the past year:

By DAVID J. HILL
Published July 17, 2024
In a measure of the positive impact of its global health research, climate action activities and commitment to clean energy, UB is among the best in the nation according to the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings.
Now in their sixth year, THE’s Impact Rankings identify and highlight universities from around the globe that excel across multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) . They are the only global performance rankings that assess universities against the SDGs. UB has performed very well in the rankings since they were first introduced in 2019.
This year, Times Higher Education evaluated 2,152 universities — 447 more than last year — from 125 countries/regions.
UB ranks among the top 10 among U.S. colleges and universities in four of the 17 SDG rankings, including No. 1 in Good Health and Well-Being, and No. 2 in Climate Action.
“We are immensely proud of the UB faculty, students and staff whose research and innovations positively impact the world and whose dedication is helping our university achieve its sustainability goals,” says A. Scott Weber, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. “These rankings are a recognition of UB’s collective efforts across departments and academic disciplines.”
Added Laura Hubbard, vice president for finance and administration: “We are proud of the efforts of our campus community in integrating sustainability into our operations and practices across the university. Advancing the Sustainable Development Goals and the purpose they represent not only aligns with our values but also represents a smart and long-term strategic investment in UB and our broader community.”
Here’s a breakdown of UB’s Impact Rankings:
No. 1 (U.S.): Good Health and Well-Being
This ranking recognizes UB’s impactful research on the key conditions and diseases that have a disproportionate impact on health outcomes across the world, as well as UB’s support for health care professions and efforts to support the health of students, faculty and staff.
In this category, UB is ranked No. 1 among U.S. universities and No. 38 globally among 1,498 universities submitting data.
This ranking also recognizes impactful public health outreach programming, such as the spring break trip to Belize that students from the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at UB took to train 100 farmers and villagers in lifesaving “Stop the Bleed” techniques. There are also the mobile dental clinics operated by the School of Dental Medicine, which provide dental care in rural and urban communities in Western New York.
UB’s ranking in this category also recognizes the significant number of students who graduate from UB with a degree associated with a health-related profession.
No. 2 (U.S.): Climate Action
UB’s ranking in this category is due in large part to the university’s “10 in 10” climate action plan of innovative, engaging and practical steps it is taking to achieve net zero emissions by 2030.
Globally, UB is ranked 18th in this category among 924 universities worldwide, including an additional 189 institutions evaluated this year.
This ranking also recognizes UB’s impactful research on climate change , which includes $3 million in funding from the National Science Foundation to study the impacts of prehistoric climate change on ecosystems in Alaska ; a report on how climate change will affect New York State’s agriculture, buildings, ecosystems and economy; and studying Greenland’s glacier retreat rate over the past two decades.
No. 3 (U.S.): Affordable and Clean Energy
This ranking recognizes UB’s research related to energy, its energy use and policies, and the university’s commitment to promoting energy efficiency in the wider community.
UB has excelled in this area in recent years by advancing its commitment to clean energy through a variety of sources, including the recent installation of five solar arrays on university-owned land on the North Campus and four rooftop solar installations, making UB one of the largest on-campus producers of renewable energy in the country.
Top 5 (U.S.): Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
This ranking recognizes UB’s role in fostering innovation and serving the needs of industry. It’s based on institutions’ research in support of industry and innovation, and the number of patents and spin-off companies a university produces.
UB’s Office of Business and Entrepreneurial Partnerships offers several programs supporting the spin-off of faculty research and the start-up and growth of new companies.
UB is also playing a leadership role in state and federal initiatives to support research and development. For example, to accelerate AI research and innovation in New York State, Gov. Kathy Hochul named UB the home of Empire AI .
And this month UB and partners in the Buffalo-Rochester-Syracuse region were awarded $40 million in federal funding to help boost the nation’s semiconductor manufacturing, research and education.
No. 9 (U.S.): Sustainable Cities and Communities
UB’s ranking in this category recognizes the university’s sustainable practices. This includes a new, 10-year contract for campuswide bus service that aims to have 40% of the fleet comprised of electric vehicles over the first two years of the contract, as well as the UB Regional Institute’s One Region Forward Climate Action Plan .

Sen. J.D. Vance is former President Donald Trump's vice presidential pick for the 2024 election, as Trump announced on Truth Social on Monday, the same day the Republican National Convention kicked off.
Trump passed over established GOP politicians like Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida and Gov. Doug Burgum of North Dakota for the relatively young Senate newcomer, 39-year-old Vance.
While he is the junior senator from Ohio now, Vance graduated from Yale Law School in New Haven, Connecticut. Here's a little more about his time there.
Vance attended Yale Law School from 2010 to 2013 after graduating from Ohio State University with a degree in political science and philosophy.
He would go on to write and publish the best-selling memoir "Hillbilly Elegy" in 2016, later becoming the junior senator of the state of Ohio, where he grew up.
Yes, a large part of his memoir is about his time at Yale Law.
According to Vance, he received a generous financial aid package to the prestigious law school due to his disadvantaged economic background.
Vance wrote in his memoir that he did appreciate his education at Yale Law and the people he met there. However, he said he felt the class disparity between him and the others at the school, explaining that many students came from middle class upbringings, whereas he came from a poor family with a parent struggling with substance use.
Vance met his wife Usha Chilukuri during their time at Yale Law and later got married in 2014.
According to his memoir, Vance became an editor of the Yale Law Journal , an accolade achieved by former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich , former National Security Advisor John Bolton and other notable individuals.
Vance had author, corporate lawyer and John M. Duff, Jr. Professor of Law Amy Chau as one of his law professors. She would give him some sage advice regarding clerkships and career opportunities.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business again has been recognized by the Princeton Review for its efforts to deliver their signature MBA programs online and in-residence through their latest “ best business schools” rankings .
For the sixth consecutive year, its Kelley Direct Online MBA Program is ranked No. 1 in the Princeton Review’s “Top 50 Online MBA Programs for 2023.”
IU President Pamela Whitten
While the Princeton Review does not provide a similar overall ranking of “on-campus MBA programs,” it did rank Kelley’s Full-Time MBA Program as a top 10 program in six – or a third — of 18 categories reflecting its quality – both inside and outside of the classroom. The Full-Time MBA program was ranked as the second-best MBA for marketing and the 10th best for consulting . It is the fourth most family-friendly program , is seventh for “ best professors ” and is ranked ninth for “ best classroom experience .” It also is the 10th best administered program .
“These impressive rankings are the latest in a series of global recognitions, continuing a long tradition of excellence at the Kelley School of Business,” said IU President Pamela Whitten. “This latest achievement is a testament to the Kelley School’s unwavering dedication to a world-class business education and the tireless efforts of our faculty, staff and students. It also reinforces our commitment to academic excellence and bolsters Indiana University’s reputation as a leader in business education.”
“These rankings reflect breadth and depth of the dedication and commitment from our faculty and staff in delivering a highly ranked, impactful business education to our students, whatever the modality,” said Ash Soni , dean of the Kelley School of Business and The Sungkyunkwan Professor. “Whether students choose to earn an MBA online, in-residence in Bloomington or part-time in Indianapolis, we provide business professionals with what they need to succeed.”
Celebrating a No. 1 ranking isn’t new for Kelley Direct, as this photo taken in May demonstrates.
A banner year for Kelley Direct, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary
In addition to again being at the top of the Princeton Review’s “Top 50 Online MBA Programs,” Kelley Direct was named the No. 1 program by U.S. News & World Report (for the third consecutive year), Fortune and Poets&Quants (for the third time). QS Quacquarelli Symonds , the world’s leading provider of services, analytics and insight to the global higher education sector, ranked it No. 1 among all programs in the Americas.
Created in 1999, Kelley Direct is the original online MBA program from a top-tier business school. The program is uniquely designed to meet the needs of working professionals.
Will Geoghegan
Will Geoghegan , chair of Kelley Direct, Schuyler F. Otteson Distinguished Fellow for Kelley Direct Leadership and clinical professor of management and entrepreneurship , noted that the No. 1 ranking not only is indicative of the program’s quality, but it also reflects the quality of its students.
“We are grateful for Princeton Review’s recognition for the sixth consecutive year, providing further validation of the Kelley Direct MBA program,” Geoghegan said. “Receiving yet another top ranking this year is incredibly gratifying. We are dedicated to maintaining the high quality of our program, continuously seeking new opportunities for student engagement with peers, faculty, and staff. It’s our mission that our students see that they are learning with the best, in addition to learning from the best.”
In its profile of Kelley Direct , editors wrote that it is “the only top tier program that was affordable and value-adding.”
All Kelley Direct courses are designed and taught by more than 130 dedicated full-time Kelley faculty. This ensures that students receive a unique and personalized education that includes in-person and immersive experiences. They include Kelley On Campus , which involves a live case where students apply what they’re learning in a real-world setting that also benefits a real client; Kelley On Location , which offers optional global and domestic immersions tailored to the students’ goals; and Kelley On Innovation , which allows students to apply their growing knowledge and skill-set to dive deep into an industry, geographic region, or emerging challenge shaping the business landscape today.
Princeton Review’s rankings of online MBA programs are based on data from the company’s surveys in 2024 of administrators at 165 business schools, as well as information requested from each online MBA program’s admissions, selectivity, faculty training and credentials, technological infrastructure, graduation rates, and career outcomes. It also surveyed more than 10,700 students, about their program’s academics, faculty, technology platform and other topics.
Me, Inc., a professional development program that is unique to the Kelley Full-Time MBA Program, enables students to develop an in-depth understanding of their personal story and how it connects to the next steps in their career even before classes begin.
Full-Time MBA Program recognized for outstanding teaching and career preparation, family-friendly community
John D. Hill
“The rankings across so many different areas demonstrate the Kelley Full-Time MBA Program’s commitment to student learning and professional development,” said John D. Hill , faculty chair of the Full-Time MBA Program. “We have the resources to support students regardless of their career goals.”
“Kelley’s faculty are dedicated to delivering outstanding learning experiences in the Core, electives, and our signature career foundation academies,” added Gale Gold Nichols, executive director of the Full-Time MBA Program. “The rankings for classroom experience, faculty, marketing, and consulting reflect that dedication.
Hill points to the success of a foundational program called “Me, Inc,” a professional development program that provides each student with a personal career coach who works with them to think through and identify the right career fit for their skills, personality and values. Me, Inc., also prepares students for internship recruiting, which begins very quickly after beginning their first year in the MBA program. It helps them land the summer position they are looking for and leads to better career outcomes because they know what they want to do.
“Our staff work hard to provide an outstanding student experience, work with academic departments to get students into their chosen classes, and respond quickly to student inquiries and feedback,” Nichols added.
Another example she cited was the program’s active Partners Club, which organizes activities for and builds community among our students, partners, and children. Many events, including holiday and cultural celebrations, tailgates and its annual Little 500 tricycle race, are open to the whole Kelley MBA family.
“And Bloomington is a family-friendly city, with great schools, parks, activities for children,” she said, adding, “and it’s affordable, too.”
In addition to earlier mentioned U.S. News rankings of Kelley Direct and the Full-Time programs, the publication also ranked the Evening MBA Program at the Kelley School at IU Indianapolis 13th . As a part-time program, students attend courses at night and return to work the next day with fresh ideas they can deploy to confront challenges in their organizations.

James David Vance has had a number of names in his life, a function of an upbringing marked by domestic instability.
By Rebecca Davis O’Brien
In May 2022, when J.D. Vance was a primary candidate vying for a U.S. Senate seat in Ohio, former President Donald J. Trump referred to him — or, seemed to refer to him — in passing at a rally in Nebraska.
“We’ve endorsed J.P. — right? J.D. Mandel, and he’s doing great,” Mr. Trump told the crowd. “And let’s see what happens.”
Mr. Trump had apparently confused Mr. Vance, whom he had just given a major boost with an endorsement the previous month, with his opponent in the Ohio Republican primary, Josh Mandel.
In Mr. Trump’s defense, James David Vance has had a number of names in his life, a function of an upbringing marked by domestic instability and a revolving door of father figures, as chronicled in his best-selling 2016 memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy.”
At birth, Mr. Vance was named James Donald Bowman, after his father, Donald Bowman. Mr. Bowman was Mr. Vance’s mother’s second husband — Mr. Vance wrote that they split up when he was a toddler, and that Mr. Bowman gave him up for adoption when he was 6.
After the divorce, Mr. Vance’s mother married Bob Hamel, who became J.D.’s legal father, and she changed her son’s name. James Donald Bowman became James David Hamel, swapping out her ex-husband’s first name for her uncle’s name, David, to preserve the “J.D.” — which by then was Mr. Vance’s established nickname. (“This seemed a bit of a stretch even when I was six,” Mr. Vance wrote. “Any old D name would have done, so long as it wasn’t Donald.”)
A few years later, Mr. Hamel and J.D.’s mother split up. “One of the worst parts, honestly, was that Bob’s departure would further complicate the tangled web of last names in our family.” His mother, he wrote, took the last name of “whatever husband she was married to.” Her own parents (“Mamaw” and “Papaw”) were Vances.
When J.D. got to Yale Law School, he began to tell his friends about his childhood and his identity. His legal father, whose name was on his birth certificate, was a “total stranger.”
After he graduated from law school, J.D. married a former classmate, Usha Chilukuri , and they both changed their last name to Vance — “giving me, finally, the same name as the family to which I belonged.”
