PATRIOT PEN

2022-2023 "PATRIOT’S PEN” ESSAY Program

"My Pledge to Our Veterans"

All information pertaining to the theme, judging, eligibility, awards, and other aspects of this program are contained in the Veterans of Foreign Wars program booklet for the Patriot’s Pen Essay Program.  District Chairmen are responsible to ensure that their District programs are conducted within these rules and deadlines.   Make sure that you distribute copies of your program to all Posts in your District in enough time to ensure a successful competition.

The Patriot’s Pen Essay Program is a joint program with the VFW Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Michigan.  The Auxiliary does not need the permission of a Post to participate in the Patriot’s Pen Essay Program.  Post and District Chairmen are expected to include their VFW Auxiliary counterparts in all activities concerning the conduct of local and District programs. Coordination of the District program is the sole responsibility of each District Chairman. Post Chairmen must refer to their District program for their District program requirements and deadline dates.

  Judging the Contest

The suggested number of judges is five to nine (or a minimum of three).  Judges should be from outside your Posts/Auxiliaries and should represent your community.  Judges must not be connected in any way with the students in the competition.  Set the date for your judging and invite the judges at least 90 days in advance.  Remind them a week before the competition with a letter or email, and two days before with a phone call.

Eligibility

Sixth (6th), Seventh (7th) and Eighth (8th) grade students in public, private, parochial, and home schools in the State of Michigan.  Former first place winners at the State and National level competition or any foreign exchange student are not eligible.  Students do not have to be relatives of a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars or its VFW Auxiliary to participate.

Essays must be typed, or computer printed in English, between 300-400 words, on a single sheet of paper, with no added color or art.

Posts

To receive credit for participation in the Patriot’s Pen Essay Program, a Post MUST  SPONSOR THE PROGRAM IN THEIR COMMUNITY.  While it is important to offer the Patriot’s Pen Essay Program in our schools, it is not solely a program for the schools.  You may offer the competition to any sixth, seventh or eighth grade student.  Foreign exchange students are not eligible.  All entries MUST be submitted directly to the Post.  They may be sponsored through local schools, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Church youth groups, Junior ROTC programs, etc.  The Post is encouraged to solicit participants from as many sources as possible.

The Post will hold their own judging and may submit to District the number of students permitted by the following breakdown.

  • 1-15 student participants = 1 top Post entry is allowed to advance to District
  • 16-30 student participants = 2 top Post entries are allowed to advance to District
  • 31-45 student participants = 3 top Post entries are allowed to advance to District Etc.

 (Note: No Limit)

Posts may advance as many winners as they select based on the total number of students participating.  Post judging is the responsibility of the Post Chairman and must be conducted in accordance with the National Judging Criteria.

The Post may forward each 1st place winning entry to District.  Each student entry submitted by a Post to District must be an equal 1st place winner.  This means each Post student entry sent to District must receive the same award.  For example, a Post has 55 student entries and is eligible to send four entries to District for judging.  These four entries must each receive an equal first place award from the Post. If the Post lists them as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th place, then they can only send in one entry as the 1st place winner.

  School/Youth Group  Competition Alternatives

We offer teachers/youth leaders the option to use the Voice of Democracy as a writing exercise.  The teacher/leader may submit all the entries to the Post for judging or conduct a judging within the group/class and advance a winner for every 15 participants.  Note: The Post Chairman should make this decision; working closely with the teacher or group leader.

School/Youth Group to Post

  • 1-15 student participants =   1 top Post entry is allowed to advance to District
  • 31-45 student participants = 3 top Post entries are allowed to advance to District Etc.

  (Note: No Limit)

Each District shall be responsible for the conduct of the program and judging of entries within their District.  District Chairmen are expected to promote the expansion of the program by encouraging the participation of additional Posts.  It is not always possible to restrict sponsorship strictly along VFW District boundaries.  Posts may solicit student participation from any geographical area within the State of Michigan if they do not interfere with the sponsorship of other Posts.  District Chairmen are expected to assist Posts in the coordination of sponsorship of all schools in their District.  It is unacceptable that a school is not contacted.

Each District may submit only one entry to the Department for judging.  This entry must be certified on the proper National Entry Form by the District Chairman to be the District First Place Winner of the District Program judging.

The following items MUST accompany the District entry to Department for judging.

  • One student essay in accordance with the above rules.
  • One completed student entry from the National Program booklet
  • One good quality head and shoulder photograph. Wallet size.
  • One signed student release form provided by Department.
  • One State Biographical Questionnaire for the District Winner.

It is the responsibility of the District Chairman to ensure that all materials are included.  Any entry that does not include all materials may not be judged.

To obtain program credit the Post Chairman portion of the Student Entry Form must be completed and submitted to District with each Post entry.  The form must include the number of students participating from the school and the approximate cost for the program and awards for that school.  Proper credit cannot be given without this information.  District Chairmen are required to prepare and submit a consolidated report of Post participation within their District using the District Report Form and the District Summary Form.  These reports should accompany the District entry to Department.

Deadline for Post sponsored program entries is October 31, 2022 .  Post judging may not be held before November 1, 2022 and must be completed in time to ensure that winning entries are delivered to the District Chairmen by November 16, 2022 .

District judging may not be held before November 16, 2022 and must be completed in time to ensure that the winning entry with all required materials are delivered to the Department Director by December 16, 2022 . District judging is the responsibility of the District Chairman to be conducted in accordance with the National Judging Criteria.

The Department deadline for District entries is December 16, 2022 .  This deadline is ABSOLUTE, and it includes all paperwork.  Department judging will be closed and will be the responsibility of the Department Committee.  Be advised that the state judging will be attended only by the VFW Department Committee Members, VFW State Auxiliary Committee Members, and the State Judges. The Committee has the sole authority to disqualify from the Department judging any entry which is in violation of the rules as stated in the Department Program and the National Program booklet.

It is the responsibility of the Post, District and Department adjutants to input the Patriotic Pen entries into the All-American Dashboard. This is to include all monetary values spent on this event. Failure to do so can cause the Post to show a Not Met in this category.

All Post and District awards are the responsibility of those organizations.

Department awards will be presented at the 2023 Department of Michigan Mid-Winter Conference.  District winners receiving Department awards will be invited to the Mid-Winter Conference and are expected to be present.  The sponsoring District must assume the cost of their winner’s transportation, meals, and lodging.  Department will provide each District winner with one banquet ticket.  Banquet tickets for family members and other guests are the sole responsibility of the District in cooperation with the sponsoring Post.

OTHER GUIDELINES:

If the  school does not participate ,  or if there are no schools in your area, the Post should contact student(s)and have them participate in a Post contest with the Post winner being entered into the District competition.  Home-schooled children,  your child, grandchild, or a friend's child might just be interested in winning a scholarship. Do not lose the opportunity to have your Post or Auxiliary compete in the Patriot’s Pen contest.

Posts and Auxiliaries should make their awards as large as possible. WE HAVE TO have an incentive for the teachers to push the program in order to get larger student participation. Many Posts and Auxiliaries have an Awards Night at the Post Home for teachers, community leaders and students. Some schools request that it be held at a school function. Whichever is done, make sure the students are rewarded and the community is aware of it. It is suggested that each Post and/or Auxiliary present some sort of citation to participating winners, students, teachers, etc. Citations can be ordered from the National Emblem and Supply Catalog. Department can help you create a citation also.

All entries, including Home Schools , must be judged at the VFW Post level. The only exception is where schools/classes/youth groups have large numbers of students and wish to conduct their own competition, submitting one winner for each 15 students to the local VFW Post competition. Individual students may submit their entry directly to the local VFW Post within your U.S. state of residence provided they have not competed in a school class competition.

Donors Stay Largely Silent Amid New Wave of Campus Protests

Robert Kraft, an alumnus of Columbia, suggested he would withhold donations to the school. Other alumni are keeping quiet.

By Andrew Ross Sorkin ,  Ravi Mattu ,  Bernhard Warner ,  Sarah Kessler ,  Michael J. de la Merced ,  Lauren Hirsch and Ephrat Livni

Students in masks link arms outside the N.Y.U. Stern School of Business. One holds a sign that reads “We will not be silent.”

Campus unrest spreads

Top American colleges are in turmoil , with dozens of pro-Palestinian student protesters having been arrested at N.Y.U. and Yale amid new worries about antisemitism on campus.

University administrators have been struggling to restore calm, and have taken heavy criticism from students and lawmakers alike. The growing question is whether wealthy donors to these schools — who helped topple the leaders of the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard last year — will speak out as well.

The latest: Police were called in to break up pro-Palestinian protests at N.Y.U. and Yale on Monday, days after more than 100 people were arrested at a demonstration at Columbia.

Harvard shut Harvard Yard and Columbia will make classes at its main campus hybrid until next week . Encampments were growing at other schools , including M.I.T., the University of Michigan and the University of California, Berkeley.

One major donor has weighed in on the protests. Bob Kraft, the owner of the New England Patriots, suggested that he would withhold donations. “I am no longer confident that Columbia can protect its students and staff and I am not comfortable supporting the university until corrective action is taken,” he said in a statement posted on X.

Kraft is an alumnus and a longtime donor to Columbia, and he’s also a supporter of Jewish causes: He helped fund the school’s Robert K. Kraft Center for Jewish Student Life and started the Foundation to Combat Antisemitism.

Other alumni aren’t going that far, yet. Leon Cooperman , the billionaire investor and an alumnus of Columbia Business School, told CNBC that he would continue donating to the school “when they solicit” him. “I’m uncomfortable with what’s going on at the school,” he added. “But you know, I don’t want to hold the administration responsible for demonstrations.”

James Gorman, the executive chair of Morgan Stanley and the chair of Columbia Business School, declined to comment to CNBC. Other prominent alumni of Columbia — including Warren Buffett of Berkshire Hathaway, Henry Kravis of KKR and Harvey Schwartz of Carlyle — hadn’t yet spoken publicly on the issue.

Remember the power of donors: It was wealthy alumni like the financiers Marc Rowan and Bill Ackman who helped push for the ousters of Liz Magill at Penn and Claudine Gay at Harvard. Much of their power lay in the millions that they give to schools — and their threats to withhold that money.

It’s unclear what would push these benefactors into taking more drastic steps. For now, the pressure on school leaders like Nemat Shafik of Columbia is coming from students , faculty and lawmakers including Representative Elise Stefanik, Republican of New York, and Senator John Fetterman, Democrat of Pennsylvania.

HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING

Washington reportedly weighs sanctions on Chinese banks over support for Russia’s military. Measures being drafted by the Biden administration would cut off some lenders from the U.S. dollar , in an attempt to dissuade Beijing from allowing exports of technologies that help Russia’s armed forces, according to The Wall Street Journal. The threat is emerging as Secretary of State Antony Blinken prepares to travel to China this week.

Oracle briefs Senate aides on its TikTok work. The tech giant acts as the data center for TikTok’s U.S. users per a contract worth an estimated $1 billion. It held the meetings as the upper chamber was set to vote on legislation that would force the video app to be divested by its Chinese owner. (TikTok lobbyists have reportedly complained that Oracle hasn’t done enough to oppose the legislation.)

Opening statements are delivered in Donald Trump’s hush-money trial. Manhattan prosecutors walked jurors through their arguments that the former president orchestrated a plot to have The National Enquirer buy the silence of three people, including the porn star Stormy Daniels, to help him win the 2016 election. Trump’s lawyers declared that their client was innocent of the three dozen criminal counts he faced, including falsifying business records.

What to watch in tech earnings

Peak earnings season has arrived with the six largest tech companies — carrying a combined market capitalization of $12.5 trillion — set to report bumper first-quarter results on the back of booming interest in artificial intelligence.

But investors are jittery. Apple shares are down in premarket trading on Tuesday after iPhone sales in China plunged last quarter. Nvidia tumbled last Friday to help drive U.S. stock markets to their worst week in two years.

Here’s the rundown: Meta kicks things off on Wednesday, with Microsoft and Google’s Alphabet following on Thursday. Amazon and Apple report next week, and Nvidia on May 22. (As DealBook flagged on Monday, Tesla, the laggard of the so-called Magnificent 7 with its shares down more than 40 percent this year, reports on Tuesday.)

The good news: The tech sector has driven huge stock gains over the past year and is expected to announce strong profits despite high inflation and high interest rates . That’s coupled with a U.S.-Beijing trade war and geopolitical uncertainty that’s putting a crimp on global growth.

A.I. tech stock darlings — including Nvidia, Amazon, Meta, Alphabet, and Microsoft — are still expected to be the biggest profit drivers of the S&P 500 this year. The so-called “fab five” are forecast to report that their combined quarterly profit grew roughly 65 percent on an annualized basis, according to FactSet .

The other 495 companies in the benchmark index are expected to combine for a bottom-line loss .

Even a good quarter for tech giants may not carry the stock market. Their performance last quarter helped the S&P 500 gain 10.6 percent. But the index has declined in six of the past seven sessions with investors increasingly spooked that the Fed could keep borrowing costs at a 22-year high well into the autumn.

Meanwhile, Marko Kolanovic , an equity analyst at JPMorgan Chase, has predicted that tech earnings season will not be enough to reverse the S&P 500’s recent tumble.

A big focus will be on when the bets on A.I. will start to pay off. Microsoft and Amazon have invested billions into A.I. start-ups. And Google and Meta are bolstering their search and apps businesses with greater A.I. capability.

Investors will be looking for signs that the A.I. boom is no bubble .

A lawsuit to protect “accessible luxury”

The F.T.C. has sued to block Tapestry’s $8.5 billion takeover of Capri, a blockbuster fashion deal that would put big brands like Coach, Kate Spade, Michael Kors and Versace under one roof. (Tapestry and Capri both said they would defend the deal in court.)

Behind the agency’s rare foray into the fashion world is an effort to protect a specific market: so-called accessible luxury, which caters to aspirational but budget-conscious consumers.

The focus is on competition among Coach, Kate Spade and Michael Kors, whose wares are priced below high-fashion brands. (A Marilyn medium logo tote bag from Michael Kors costs $228, while a similar Willow bag from Coach costs $350.)

The F.T.C. argues that the transaction between Capri and Tapestry, the parent of Coach, would force millions of Americans to pay more because the combined company wouldn’t feel the need to compete on price anymore. The agency added that it would also hurt workers at both companies.

Tapestry said the F.T.C. doesn’t get the fashion industry. “It’s quite clear to us that they don’t understand how consumers shop today and they don’t understand the dynamics of a marketplace with no barriers to entry, constant influx of new competitors,” Joanne Crevoiserat, the company’s C.E.O., told DealBook.

She added that consumers could shop for bags at different retailers and on numerous websites. “Type in ‘black tote,’ you’ll see thousands of choices and hundreds of brands at any price point,” she said.

Trump is set for a stock windfall

Donald Trump looked glum at his hush-money trial, but the former president, who denies the charges, is set to receive good news outside of court. Trump is in line for a $1 billion windfall via an earnout that will give him more shares in the parent group of Truth Social, his social media company. Trump could use the extra financing to pay his mounting legal bills. But he won’t be able to cash out until late August.

Apple’s new bet on soccer

Apple is set to sign another major sports streaming deal. The iPhone maker is expected to agree on terms with FIFA, soccer’s global governing body, on a package worth at least $1 billion to stream a new tournament in the U.S. next summer. A deal for the event, the Mundial de Clubes, could be announced as early as this month, The Times’s Tariq Panja writes.

It’s the latest example of how streaming giants are piling into live sports to pull in subscribers, and would come two years after Apple paid $2.5 billion for the rights to Major League Soccer.

DealBook spoke to Panja about the potential agreement and what it means for sports deal making.

Why are they doing this now?

FIFA has never signed an all-encompassing global deal with any broadcaster, network or streaming partner. But the governing body has turned to Apple because there has been little demand from traditional broadcasters willing to pay top dollar for the quadrennial 32-team competition that FIFA hopes will become one of the most popular soccer properties on the planet.

For Apple, it hopes the deal will help it attract a bigger and broader global audience for the one-month competition than it has with the M.L.S.

What does it say about the battle for sports streaming rights?

Few other types of content can match sports for generating the audience and fealty delivered by fans, and streaming giants are upping their investments. ESPN, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery are starting a new sports streaming platform , and Amazon has rights to N.F.L. games and a raft of other streaming agreements worldwide. Even Netflix is dipping its toe into sports-related programming, with a multibillion-dollar deal to stream the W.W.E.’s “Raw” show .

But it’s unclear if they will start bidding for the most expensive rights, which remain fixtures on network and cable television in most countries. And the fear among some FIFA executives is that the new competition won’t take off if it’s trapped behind a paywall on a streaming platform that’s not yet ubiquitous among the fans FIFA is hoping to attract.

If Apple and FIFA finalize a deal, a key moment will come in May at the start of the “upfront” season, when broadcasters and content owners start making presentations of future programming to advertisers. That will be a good gauge of interest in and market value of the new event.

patriot's pen essay 2022 23

Vladimir Putin has reportedly ordered rolling energy blackouts across Moscow as temperatures reach – 22C. The blackouts are said to cover the entire Moscow metropolitan area which has a total population of around 22 million. The order issued states that electricity is “not to exceed 12 hours per day” with the blackouts in place from January 14 through March 31 2024, according to  Ukraine  commentator Igor Sushko.

Sushko posted on X: “The entire Moscow metropolitan area, population 22 million, will have rolling blackouts of electricity “not to exceed 12 hours per day” from January 14 through March 31, 2024. – announced by the fascist state.”

It comes after a heating main ruptured at the Klimovsk Specialised Ammunition Plant in Podolsk, about 30 miles south of central Moscow, on January 4. As a result, tens of thousands of Russians are said to be without heat in their homes in the Moscow region due to subzero temperatures.

According to a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and circulated on various social media platforms, the affected areas include cities such as Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov, Naro-Fominsk, and Podolsk.

Residents in Moscow, specifically Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky, and Selyatino, are also experiencing power outages, according to other Russian media reports.

Power outages have been reported in St. Petersburg, Rostov, Volgograd, Voronezh, and Primorsky. Meanwhile, a huge fire t ore through a large warehouse  used by  Russia ’s largest online retailer south of St Petersburg on Saturday morning.

The blaze covered an area of 70,000 square meters, with 50,000 square meters of the Wildberries warehouse collapsing, according to  Russia ’s Emergency Situations Ministry. No casualties were reported.

Videos posted to social media appeared to show employees running down fire escapes and fleeing the scene. A video shot from a passenger jet flying nearby showed flames totally engulfing the warehouse, sending huge plumes of smoke into the sky.

Vote for putler. He will cut your electricity bills for you.

12 hour a day blackouts for 10 weeks? Of course it will be back to normal a few days before the fake election. Perhaps we should send some drones to the north east and give them some of their own medicine….

What wonderful news. How many warmonger morons that are freezing their asses off and sitting in the dark are still for war? Instead of fixing the broken country, the idiots wage an expensive war.

You can bet your life that the area the siloviki live won’t suffer any power cuts.

Of course, not.

They still have warm feelings about killing Ukrainians and stealing their children. That should hold them over…..

they could always go to the front if they’re cold, it gets a bit hot there with the occasional blinding flash of light.
