చిన్న సినిమాలకు థియేటర్లలో ఆదరణ తక్కువే ఉన్నా.. ఓటిటిల్లో వీటికి వీక్షకాధరణ అధికంగా లభిస్తుంది. కామెడీ ఎంటర్ టైనర్ గా తెరకెక్కిన నేమర్ అనే మలయాళం సినిమా ప్రస్తుతం డిస్నీ ప్లస్ హాట్ స్టార్ లో స్ట్రీమింగ్ అవుతుంది. మరి ఈ కథేంటో ఒకసారి చూసేద్దాం.

ఒక ఊళ్ళో కుంజవ(మాథ్యూ థామస్), సింటో(నస్లెన్ కె. గపూర్) ఇద్దరు మంచి స్నేహితులు. వీళ్ళిద్దరు కలిసి ఆకతాయిగా తిరుగుతూ, గొడవలు పడుతుంటారు. అయితే కుంజవ చేసే పనులతో వాళ్ళ నాన్న ఇబ్బంది పడుతుంటాడు. అయితే కుంజవ ఒక అమ్మాయిని ప్రేమిస్తాడు. కుంజవకు అతడి ఫ్రెండ్ సింటో హెల్ప్ చేస్తాడు. అయితే కుంజవ ప్రేమించిన అమ్మాయికి కుక్కలంటే ఇష్టమని చెప్పి, ఒక ఊరకుక్కని తీసుకొస్తారు. దాని పేరు నేమర్. దానిని కుంజవ తన ఇంటికి తీసుకొని వచ్చిన నుండి అన్ని సమస్యలు తెచ్చిపెడుతుంది. ఆ సమస్యలు భరించలేక కుంజవ వాళ్ళ నాన్న నేనర్ ని దూరంగా తీసుకెళ్ళమని ఒకతడికి ఇచ్చి పంపించేస్తాడు. అయితే కుంజవ అది తెలుసుకొని నేమర్ కోసం తన ఫ్రెండ్ సింటోతో కలిసి అంతా వెతుకుంటాడు. మరి నేమర్ వాళ్ళకి దొరికిందా? నేమర్ తో వచ్చిన సమస్యేంటి? కుంజవ అతడు ప్రేమించిన అమ్మాయిని ఇంప్రెస్ చేశాడా లాంటి విషయాలు తెలియాలంటే ఈ సినిమా చూడాల్సిందే.

కుంజవ తన ప్రేమించిన అమ్మాయిని ఇంప్రెస్ చేయడానికి నేమర్ అనే కుక్కని తీసుకెళ్ళి పెంచుకుంటాడు. అప్పటిదాకా స్నేహం, కొట్లాట లాంటి చుట్టూ తిరిగే కథ కాస్త.. పెట్ లవర్ యొక్క భావోద్వేగాలను చూపిస్తూ ప్రేక్షకులను కనెక్ట్ చేశాడు డైరెక్టర్. ఎప్పుడైతే నేమర్ కుంజవ లైఫ్ లోకి వస్తుందో అప్పటినుండి దానికోసం ఏదైనా చేస్తా, ఎంత దూరమైనా వెళ్తానని కుంజవ ధైర్యం చేస్తాడు. అయితే కుంజవకు, అతడి ఫ్రెండ్ సింటో చివరివరకు తోడుగా ఉండే సీన్లు ఆకట్టుకుంటాయి.

సినిమా నిడివి కాస్త ఎక్కువగా ఉంది. ఈ కథకి రెండు గంటలే చాలా ఎక్కువనిపిస్తుంది. డాగ్ లవర్స్ కి పెద్దగా నచ్చకపోవచ్చు. ఎందుకంటే ఛార్లి లాంటి సినిమా చూసిన వారు.. ఆ అంచనాలతో ఈ సినిమా చూస్తే కచ్చితంగా నచ్చదు. ఏ అంచనాలు పెట్టుకోకుండా చూస్తే పర్వాలేదనపిస్తుంది. ఈ సినిమాలో పాటలు చాలా నిడివి ఉన్నట్లు అనిపిస్తుంది. కథ ఒక సీరియస్ ఇంటెన్స్ ఉన్నప్పుడు మధ్యలో అసందర్భంగా వచ్చే పాటలు ప్రేక్షకులకు నిరాశని కలిగిస్తాయి. రెండున్నర గంటల సినిమాలో.. ఆరు పాటలు ఉండటం మరీ నెమ్మదనిపిస్తుంది. నేమర్ పాత్ర‌ చుట్టూ తిరిగితే కథ ఇంకా బాగుండేది. కానీ అసలు కథ వదిలేసి అనవసరమైన సీన్ల కోసం బాగా కష్టపడ్డట్టు తెలుస్తుంది. అయితే సినిమా ఫస్టాఫ్ అంతా ఒక ఊరిలో సాగగా, ద్వితీయార్థం పాండిచ్చేరిలో జరిగింది. అయితే అక్కడి ప్రకృతి సోయగాలని చిత్రికరించడంలో సినిమాటోగ్రఫర్ విఫలమయ్యాడు.  

కథ ఫస్టాఫ్ కామెడీ, లవ్ ట్రాక్, ప్యామిలీ ఎమోషన్స్ అన్నీ బాగా కుదిరాయి. కానీ సెకండాఫ్ లో ఎంతసేపు నేమర్ కి ట్రైనింగ్ ఇస్తూ, దానికోసం వెతుకుతూ, ఒక కాంపిటీషన్ గురించి శోధిస్తూ సాగదీసారు. సెకండాఫ్ లో క్లైమాక్స్ లో వచ్చే రెండు, మూడు సీన్లు బాగుంటాయి. మిగతాదంతా చాలా సాధారణంగా ఉంటుంది. అడల్ట్ సీన్స్ ఏమీ లేవు. ఫ్యామిలీతో కలిసి చూస్తే బాగుంటుంది. అలా అక్కడక్కడా కామెడీతో, చిన్న సస్పెన్స్ తో చివరి వరకు అలా సాగిపోయే ఈ మూవీ పర్వాలేదనిపించింది. ఎడిటింగ్ లో సెకండాఫ్ లో కత్తెరకి పని చెప్పాల్సింది. కానీ వాడలేదు. సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ పర్వాలేదు. పాండిచ్చేరి అందాలని చూపించడంలో సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ విఫలమయ్యాడు. మ్యూజిక్ అంతగా బాగాలేదు. బిజిఎమ్ పెద్దగా ప్రభావం చూపలేదు. నిర్మాణ విలువలు బాగున్నాయి.

నటీనటుల పనితీరు:

నేమర్ పాత్రలో చేసిన కుక్క యాక్టింగ్ ఆకట్టుకుంటుంది. నేమర్ కి శిక్షణ ఇచ్చే పాత్రలలో  హీరో కుంజవగా మాథ్యూ థామస్, అతడి ఫ్రెండ్ సింటోగా నస్లెన్ కె. గపూర్ కలిసి బాగా చేశారు. ఇక జానీ ఆంటోనీ, షమ్మీ తిలకన్, చాకోగా విజయ రఘవన్, సజీవ్ గోపు, రేష్మీ బోబన్ వాళ్ళ పాత్ర పరిధి మేరకు నటించి ఆకట్టుకున్నారు.

తెలుగువన్ పర్ స్పెక్టివ్:

పెంపుడు జంతువులు విశ్వాసంగా ఉంటాయని చెప్తూ తీసిన ఈ నేమర్.. కాస్త ఓపికగా చూస్తే అన్ని వర్గాల ప్రేక్షకులకు నచ్చేస్తుంది.

'Neymar' is meant for the theatres, I have given it my all: Director Sudhi Maddison

Sudhi Maddison, the debut director of the upcoming film 'Neymar', is eagerly awaiting its release. Starring Naslen and Mathew in the lead roles, along with the canine star Neymar, the movie has garnered attention for its unique concept. Sudhi recently spoke to Onmanorama about his experience working on the film and the process behind it.

Neymar's trailer looks promising. Is it going to be a full-on entertainer or an emotional drama? When I set out to make Neymar, my goal was to create a movie that would entertain audiences with a wide range of emotions. While many dog movies tend to focus on the emotional side of things, I wanted to bring a bit of mischief to the story as well.

Rather than being solely focused on joy or sadness, Neymar is a movie that explores a variety of emotions. The film tells the story of how a dog becomes a part of Mathew and Naslen's characters' lives, and the fun and sometimes unpredictable things that happen as a result.

What was it like to work with a dog in the movie? Was it easy, or did it pose some challenges? Working with Neymar was quite an experience. He was just 2.5 months old when he was handed over for training, and it wasn't an easy job. While it's easier to train foreign breeds, it's not the same with local breeds. But we were up for the challenge. Neymar was trained for 4-5 months before we started shooting, and it was exciting to see him grow and learn.

The biggest challenge was getting the shots we needed with Neymar because it all depended on his mood. We had to incorporate various techniques to make him cooperate, but it was worth it. Neymar loved chicken, and we used it as a treat to make him do fun activities during shoots. We had to be careful not to interact with Neymar during shoots as he would get distracted and wander off to play with us. So, indeed, working with Neymar was a challenging but rewarding experience.

How do you feel as a first-time director with Neymar's release just around the corner? I don't feel particularly tense right now. Having worked as a film editor for 10 years and as an assistant director on the movie 'Jilla', and having edited and spot edited at least 20 other films, I feel confident in my abilities. Additionally, I served as the co-director of 'Operation Java', so our team is very confident in the content we've created. However, I can't say for sure how I'll feel when the movie is actually released.

Why did you choose a theatrical release for Neymar despite the growing prominence of movies on OTT platforms these days? Theatrical release was the preferred choice for Neymar, given its grand scale and setting in a Malayalam-Tamil backdrop. While OTT platforms are gaining popularity, the movie is designed to be experienced on the big screen, as it offers a complete entertainment package. Once you watch the film, you'll realize why it was made for the theatres.

With the controversy surrounding young actors and their perceived lack of professionalism these days, did you encounter any issues while working with young actors in this film? I didn't experience anything like that. In fact, I was very comfortable working with the lead actors who were quite young and understanding. It was easy to communicate and interact with them freely. Mathew and Naslen were on the same wavelength as me, which gave me the freedom to express my thoughts and ideas openly.

What was it like working with the highly sought-after duo of Mathew and Naslen in the industry? Since the scripting process of Neymar, I had been in contact with Mathew. Our discussions started right after the completion of 'Operation Java'. We also wanted Naslen to be a part of this movie. As you mentioned, their collaboration is highly sought after and they are a valuable combination. Neymar is their third film together. Although many other directors may have approached them with scripts in the past, those attempts may not have been successful. Therefore, it was crucial for us to approach them with a well-crafted script. Once we were ready, we reached out to them, and they both agreed to be a part of the project.

Did you have prior knowledge of Mathew being cast in Vijay's upcoming film Leo? How excited was he about it? While we were dubbing Neymar, Mathew shared the news about his role in Vijay's upcoming movie, Leo. We were thrilled to hear about it and it's always a great feeling to see someone you've worked with achieving success. Mathew was definitely excited about it, but I don't have much information beyond that.

I did not come from a film background. When I was in college, I aspired to become an editor. No one in my family or circle of friends had a background in the film industry.

Have you always aspired to become a director? Was the journey to becoming a director a smooth one for you? I did not come from a film background. When I was in college, I aspired to become an editor. No one in my family or circle of friends had a background in the film industry. I learned editing on my own by watching YouTube channels. The process is surely not easy. I reached out to editors in the Malayalam and Tamil film industries for opportunities, and eventually, I landed a job as an assistant director in 'Jilla'. It was only in 2017-18 that I started feeling the desire to direct my own movie. Up until then, I always had dreams of becoming an editor.

Future Projects? Currently, I am fully focused on Neymar and not involved in any other projects. I have put all my efforts and dedication into this movie. I have given this movie my all. Once Neymar is released, I will consider new projects. I aspire to work on bigger-scale films in the future and hopefully, that opportunity will present itself.

Gist of the Story

Neymar, a new furry pet, enters the lives of Kunjava and his pal Sinto. They had no idea how their lives would soon change drastically.

Detailed Plot

Sinto and Kunjava are close friends. Their primary goal is to attract the attention of a local girl in whom Akamsh has grown romantically interested. They are able to get her attention by utilizing a variety of small-scale strategies. The more perceptive of the two, Sinto, proposes that since Akamsh loves dogs, she gets a puppy. In response to this inspiration, Akamsh buys an independent dog named Neymar, after the legendary Brazilian footballer. Neymar seems to be a placid dog at first, but the two quickly learn about his mischievous side. Unaware of the implications, Neymar’s acts start to cause issues in their neighborhood, which makes the people start to dislike him. However, except for the patriarch of Akamsh’s family, Akamsh, Sinto, their families, and the neighbors all gradually unite and come to like Neymar. While this is going on, Akamsh’s dad, Sahadevan (Shammi Thilakan), resorts to extreme methods as the people continue to air their grievances. He pays a local driver a bribe to take Neymar somewhere far away and leave him there. In the movie Neymar, we see Sinto and Kunjava’s search for Neymar and the events that occurred along the way.

Artistes’ Performances

Throughout the entire movie, Mathew and Naslen give amazing acting performances. With Naslen’s character being shown as Mathew’s character’s devoted and true friend, the viewer would certainly identify with him or her. The second half relied heavily on Yog Japee as Gabriel. Good roles are also given to Vijayaraghavan and Shammy Thilakan. As the boisterous but talented Chackola, Vijayaraghavan steals the show. It’s fun to see the trio in a mass setting. Neymar, however, is the true protagonist of the picture. Those scenes look more convincing on television thanks in large part to the dog’s performance and the training it received.

Direction / Technical Side

Neymar is a comedy aimed at family moviegoers and dog lovers that celebrates the friendship around two pals and their dog in Sudhi Madisson’s feature film debut. Kunjava, Sinto, and their families are introduced to the audience in the first half of the film, along with Neymar, the naughty yet perceptive dog, and the impact he has on each of their lives. The plot of their lives and the impact of Neymar are established in the film. The movie changes dramatically in the later half, putting Neymar in front of a totally different setting that is absolutely nothing short of enthralling. The second half of the film progressively picks up the pace after the first half’s languid wide strokes.

Neymar would have been better to sit through if it had been cut down by at least 30 minutes, but the story nevertheless needed more heart. The movie would have been significantly improved with a more intriguing plot that went deeper in building the emotional connection between the leading characters and the dog.The film may feel a little drawn out towards the conclusion, but this doesn’t greatly diminish the whole viewing experience. Due to Sudhi Maddison’s outstanding efforts, Neymar manages to create the ideal blend between feel-good and fun to a certain extent. Neymar has been captured in vibrant, dynamic shots by Albin. Additionally, the background score by Gopi Sunder and the music by Shaan Rahman deserve special recognition for giving the film a lively soundscape.

Verdict; Neymar is worth a light-hearted viewing if you’re in the mood for some laughter and amusement. However, the movie suffers from predictability in several places to it’s minus. As intended, especially in the second half, Neymar was successful in utilising the pet sentiments to grab attention of the audience. ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Rating: 3 out of 5.

సుధీ మాడిసన్ దర్శకత్వం వహించిన నెయ్‌మార్‌ సినిమా కథ మొత్తం ఒక కుక్క చుట్టూనే తిరుగుతుంది. కొన్ని నెలల క్రితం కన్నడలో రిలీజై ఇండస్ట్రీ హిట్‌ గా నిలిచిన 777 చార్లీ తరహాలోనే ఎంతో వినోదాత్మకంగా నెయ్‌మార్‌ మూవీ తెరకెక్కింది. బ్రెజిల్‌ ఫుట్‌బాల్‌ స్టార్‌ నెయ్‌మార్‌ అభిమానులైన మాథ్యూ థామస్, నస్లెన్ కే గఫూర్ విమానయాన రంగంలో కెరీర్‌ వెతుక్కోవాలని ప్రయత్నాలు చేస్తుంటారు. అయితే అమ్మాయిలను ఆకట్టుకునేందుకు ఒక కుక్కను కొనుగోలు చేస్తారు. దానికి ముద్దుగా నెయ్‌మార్‌ అని పేరు పెడతారు. ఆ కుక్క కారణంగా వారు ఎలాంటి అనుభవాలు ఎదుర్కొన్నారన్నదే మూవీ కథ.

Neymar: చిన్న సినిమాలు, హీరోయిజాలు కాకుండా కథనే నమ్ముకొని హిట్ సాధించే సినిమాలు ఇవ్వడం మలయాళ ఇండస్ట్రీకే చెల్లింది. భిన్నమైన కథలు, ఇంట్రెస్టింగ్ ట్విస్టులతో అక్కడి డైరెక్టర్లు మాయ చేస్తున్నారు. క్రమంగా తెలుగు ప్రేక్షకులను కూడా ఆకట్టుకుంటున్నారు. ఈ మధ్యే వచ్చిన 2018 మూవీ ఎంత పెద్ద హిట్టో తెలుసు కదా.

అత్యధిక వసూళ్లు సాధించిన మలయాళ సినిమా గా నిలిచింది. ఇక ఇప్పుడు ఆ రేంజ్ లో కాకపోయినా బాక్సాఫీస్ దగ్గర సర్‌ప్రైజ్ హిట్ కొట్టిన నెయ్‌మార్ అనే ఓ చిన్న సినిమా కూడా వార్తల్లో నిలుస్తోంది. అసలు ఏమాత్రం అంచనాలు లేకుండా వచ్చినా.. 50 రోజుల పాటు థియేటర్లలో ఆడి సంచలనం సృష్టించిందీ మూవీ. అంతేకాదు రూ.10 కోట్ల కలెక్షన్లు కూడా రాబట్టింది.

మాథ్యూ థామస్, నస్లెన్ కే గఫూర్ నటించిన ఈ సినిమా స్టోరీ ఓ కుక్క చుట్టూ తిరుగుతుంది. నిజానికి ఈ సినిమా టైటిల్ రోల్ పోషించింది ఈ కుక్కే. దీనివల్లే తమ సినిమాకు ఎంతో మంది ఫ్యామిలీ ఆడియెన్స్ వచ్చినట్లు డైరెక్టర్ సుధి మాడిసన్ చెప్పడం విశేషం. ఇలా కుక్క చుట్టే తిరిగి పెద్ద హిట్ అయిన కన్నడ మూవీ 777 చార్లీ సినిమా గుర్తుంది కదా.

ఇప్పుడు మలయాళంలోనూ ఈ నెయ్‌మార్ మూవీ అలాంటి సంచలనమే సృష్టించింది. ఈ సినిమా మంగళవారం (ఆగస్ట్ 8) నుంచి డిస్నీ ప్లస్ హాట్‌స్టార్ లో స్ట్రీమింగ్ కానుండటం విశేషం. ఈ సినిమా కేవలం మలయాళంలోనే రిలీజైనా.. ఇప్పుడు ఓటీటీలో మాత్రం మిగతా భాషల్లోనూ తీసుకురావడానికి నిర్మాతలు ప్లాన్ చేశారు. దీంతో ఈ సినిమా కూడా ఓటీటీలో వ్యూస్ సొంతం చేసుకుంటుందని అంచనా వేస్తున్నారు.

Neymar The Perfect Chaos review: The swag and flair of Brazilian football

Directed by david charles rodrigues, the documentary neymar: the perfect chaos tries to find the balance between the public image of neymar versus neymar in real life..

One may wonder what makes Neymar documentary material, especially while he’s still playing top level football in Europe. It’s tricky to evaluate Neymar’s position in world football. When he was acquired by Barcelona in 2013 to play alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Saurez, experts were sure that the world is going to witness another great player from Brazil following the footsteps of Pele, Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Romario and Ronaldinho. It would have been true if he wasn’t playing during the same era as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. The man destined for the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) title however couldn’t outlast the real GOAT’s, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo at least when it comes to individual trophies and stats. Directed by David Charles Rodrigues, the documentary Neymar: The Perfect Chaos tries to find the balance between the public image of Neymar versus Neymar in real life.

A career muddled with injuries and controversies, Neymar couldn’t fulfill his potential though he still remains one of the most influential and talented players on the pitch. Neymar couldn’t fulfill what was expected of him – to win the Ballon d’Or or to topple Messi from the top spot. Adding to that, Kylian Mbappe, Neymar’s teammate in PSG and French world cup winner, is all set to take the ‘numero uno’ spot from Messi, and players like Erling Haaland are also scoring consistently. And don’t forget Mohammed Salah who has made more headlines with his performances since joining Liverpool in 2017 than Neymar. Despite all this, Neymar still ranks among the greatest active players for his impeccable technique, envious skill set, influence as a match winner and natural talent infused with Brazilian football’s flair and legacy.

Unlike Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who are considered as role models in the sports industry for their professionalism, commitment and longevity, Neymar’s image is that of a naturally talented footballer who’s not fully focused on his profession. The documentary questions this image of Neymar as an under achiever. The documentary tries to tone down this image of Neymar by showing the highlights from his career starting with his triumph with Santos. A boy who was noted for his exceptional skill and talent, Neymar ‘s reputation was first acknowledged by Santos – one of the oldest football clubs in Brazil.

At the age of 17, Neymar, a lanky boy with a funky hairstyle, was signed by Santos. Everything is easy for players like Neymar on the football pitch. In 2011, two years after he was signed, Neymar helped Santos win 2011 Copa Libertadores and he scored six decisive goals in the tournament. The documentary then follows Neymar’s move to Barcelona , the two world cups he was involved in, the Olympic Gold triumph, his move to PSG and the change of mind later. It also looks at all the controversies he was involved in on-field and off-field including a rape accusation which was later quashed due to insufficient evidence. The documentary has interviews of sports journalists, coaches, Neymar’s teammates including Dani Alves, Suarez and Thiago Silva.

The documentary also shows the relation between Neymar and his father Neymar Sr which is an awkward blend of personal and professional relationship. A clip of Neymar Sr insisting that his son wear his cap properly before going to sign the Barcelona contract are instances from the documentary which shows how concerned Neymar Sr was about projecting his son’s image from a very young age to the present day. His vision and awareness to keep Neyamar away from trouble has helped the superstar’s career significantly. But, the documentary also shows how their relationship loses its charm when Neymar starts to do things his way like his decision to leave Barcelona for PSG and his father’s role was limited to only managing his brand. Neymar Sr might be the sole reason why Neymar’s career is still on track and why he hasn’t been distracted like other Brazilian legends. The natural Brazilian tendency to enjoy life to the fullest has cut short the careers of many Brazilian players in the past like that of Ronaldinho, Ronaldo etc. Adriano, who was once expected to rule world football, had to battle depression and substance abuse. So Neymar Sr was well aware of Neymar’s situation and how the boyish tendencies of his son could end up in disaster, especially in a place like Spain.

A man who is often criticised for his lifestyle, unapologetic and carefree attitude, Neymar’s showboat of a life was not well received in a country like Brazil which was at its peak of poverty and inequality. The documentary tries to narrate this love-hate relationship between Neymar and Brazilian fans. Much faith and love was pinned on Neymar’s shoulder in his first world cup in 2014, which was held in Brazil amidst protests and riots. Brazil was on the verge of total anarchy with masses protesting on the streets, agitating against poverty, economic disparity and unemployment. There were even protests for holding the world cup in Brazil while the country was going through a crisis. However, things calmed down as the tournament started. Brazilians forgot all their worries once again to greet the greatest carnival on earth. But what awaited them was a tragic end. Neymar was influential in Brazil’s progress till the quarter final in the tournament against Colombia. As we all remember, in a dangerous attempt to win the ball, Colombian player Juan Camilo Zúñiga badly injured Naymar. The sight of a young Neymar in tears and taken off the field in a stretcher was the most striking image of that world cup. What followed was a disaster in Maracana where Germany thrashed Brazil 7-1 in one of the most humiliating matches in Brazilian history.

However, the documentary lightens up the mood with Neymar’s triumph in 2016 Rio Olympics. Brazil took revenge by beating Germany in the same Maracana ground where they were once humiliated. In the match that went into penalty shootout, Neymar was destined to take the decisive final penalty which he converted successfully to take home Brazil’s first ever Olympic gold in men’s football. In his second world cup in 2018, though Neymar played the key role in Brazil’s progression till the semifinal, his reaction to fouls led to memes and scathing criticism. In the documentary, Neymar doesn’t regret anything and seems sure he wasn’t acting on the pitch.

The documentary then follows his golden period in Barcelona where he won every possible title including the La Liga and Champions League. However, more that the Champions League triumph, Neymar remembers the surprising comeback against PSG in the Champions League round of 16. Neymar was instrumental in the unbelievable victory over PSG in the second leg in which Barcelona over turned a deficit of four goals conceded in the first leg. In the documentary, Neymar even shows one of his personal videos of the iconic trio of Messi, Suarez and himself dancing to music as if they were ‘plastered’- as Neymar puts it. The documentary is narrated in a very casual manner as Neymar answers questions very candidly – almost having a ‘gangster rap’ vibe. The end credit tracks also matches with this attitude of Neymar.

The final episode shows Neyamr’s decision to join PSG, how he changed his mind after one season and his journey with the French club in Champions League campaigns. The documentary and Neymar however fails answer to the exact reason behind his move to PSG while Barcelona was dominating European football with the famous ‘MSN’ trio. Did Neymar want to come out of Messi’s shadow? Did he want to write his own legacy? Neymar doesn’t have clear answers to these questions either. As the documentary reaches its climax we don’t get to know Neymar other than what we already know of him – a guy of instincts, a guy who doesn’t care about what others think of him, a guy who just loves to exhibit his skills on the field and someone who likes to show how cool he’s off it. Though it may appear he wants everyone to leave him alone, it may feel like Neymar craves for some attention – be it good or bad. As he still holds the record for the highest transfer fee for a football player at 220 million euros and is one of the highest paid football players in the world, it’s easy being carefree like ‘Ney’ does!

Neymar review: An enjoyable ride from Mathew Thomas and Naslen

The dog named 'Neymar' steals the show with the backing of all the other actors in this comedy entertainer.

The dog is the real hero!

When the name  Neymar  is used for a movie, people might think it’s related to football.

But the new Malayalam flick Neymar refers to the name of a local breed dog which is the central character. Pets have now become a trend with the change in living style of people.

The film utilises all these advantages so that people can connect the project with their pets. It also makes use of sequences involving dog shows to make people engaged.

Being his debut, director Sudhi Maddison invests his time to research dog training and other aspects related to pets.

Though Malayalam movies like Jimmy Ee Veedinte Aiswaryam (2019), and CID Moosa  (2003) portrayed dogs in pivotal characters, this one is different and is dedicated to the heroism of “Neymar”.

In Neymar , the main characters are played by Mathew Thomas (Aakamsh aka Kunjava) and Naslen (Shinto Chakola), both close friends.

Kunjava has a crush on his classmate who owns a dog. To woo her attention, Kunjava and Shinto decide to pet a dog.

However, Kunjava’s mother denies him permission saying that her husband Sahadevan (Shammy Thilakan) doesn’t allow it.

But somehow, the youths get a local breed named “Neymar” from a pet shop owned by Babu (Maniyan Pilla Raju).

Kunjava is now on cloud nine as he starts interacting with his crush over the phone and a small relationship starts between them.

But to make things worse, “Neymar” becomes notorious in their village — Randu Kai in the Kothamangalam district.

The dog becomes a headache to the villagers as it starts catching hens from nearby houses. It even injures the son of a police officer.

This creates a big problem, Kunjava’s father Sahadevan sends the dog to an unknown place, with the help of a truck driver.

But when Kunjava and Shinto come to know that the dog was transported to Puducherry, they both leave for Puducherry.

The second part of the story, or precisely, the heroism of “Neymar” starts here.

In Puducherry, Neymar stays with Gabriel (Yog Japee), a powerful person who is into dog shows and other activities.

At a dog show happening in Sevalpet, Gabriel wants Neymar to win games so that he would get his dog Sulthan back, which he gives away to someone else after losing a match.

Gabriel trains Neymar. Kunjava and Shinto also become part of this race, as the story moves forward.

Meanwhile, the parents of Kunjava and Shinto — Sahadevan and Chackola (Vijayaraghavan) — and their other friend Thomas (Johny Anthony) reach Puducherry in search of their sons.

This trio is well placed in the movie as they are good in their comic timing.

Finally, Neymar wins all the rounds in the dog show. The tournament is similar to the one that is shown in the Kannada movie Charlie 777 (2022).

In the end, it goes back to Kerala along with Kunjava and Shinto.

Comedy is highlight

The highlight of the movie is its comedy sequences.

The combination of Mathew Thomas and Naslen worked well in the film.

They were a successful combo in earlier films like Thanneer Mathan Dinangal (Watermelon Days, 2019) and Jo and Jo (2022).

Their encounter with Neymar and the comic timing of the young actors helped the movie.

The characters played by Vijayaraghavan and Shammy Thilakan — who are enemies — have been portrayed comically. Both actors are in full form.

Johny Antony as Thomas also adds charm to the comic moments. During the climax, the trio gets more important.

The women characters fade out in the second half as the story is surrounded by dogs and the Sevalpet tournament.

Neymar has good songs composed by Shan Rahman. The background score by Gopi Sundar also works in its favour.

Cinematography by Alby captures parts of Puducherry well.

Neymar is an entertainer that has the potential to engage common audiences and pet lovers as well. The dog shows are something not familiar in Malayalam films.
