Everybody in their life pursues something as a hobby. A hobby is something that any person is passionate about. People spend their leisure time pursuing a hobby. Like other people, I have chosen reading books as my hobby. This hobby of mine is not about reading regular academic books. Rather I love to read books on different topics and incidents happening all around the world.

Especially, I love to read books on real travel stories as well as adventures. My habit of reading books developed since I was a child. We had no television or mobile phone in our house but a lot of books. I used to read from them whatever I wanted to. Most of those I hardly understood. I still remember those days when my father used to buy me monthly child magazines like Anandamela and Suktara.

I still love reading comics from those magazines. My favorite comics are Tintin, Chacha Chowdhury as well as Nonte-Fonte. I have recently read a book named Aranyak written by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay. It is all about the life experience of the author in a remote rural location of India. In this book, the description of nature is so vivid that any passionate reader will get lost in an amazing experience. All my teachers as well as my parents appreciate this hobby.

Essay on My Hobby Reading Book within 300 Words

A hobby is something that a person pursues to take a break from the same monotonous regular routine. That’s why everyone chooses something as a hobby that they love. Because as wise men say that love can be the ultimate motivation to do something.

So, we all need to choose something as our hobby that we are passionate about. Without passion, all our efforts to do something creative go into the vein. Our hobbies necessarily can enrich us both physically and mentally. That’s why my father says that hobbies are needed to be chosen wisely and very carefully for proper utilization of both time and effort.

Hobbies can be of many different types. Many of my classmates have chosen singing, gardening, painting as their hobbies. My best friend Piyush chose stamps collection as his hobby. These all hobbies bring refreshment to them. Like my friends, I have also chosen reading books as my hobby. I enjoy my hobby the most.

I love to read about everything no matter what topic it is. Since my early childhood, I developed a passion for reading. My parents used to gift me so many books since then. Every year, I go to the Kolkata International Book Fair with my parents. Moreover, After getting promoted to high school from primary, I got exclusive student access to my school library.

Nowadays, I borrow more books from the library than buying them. Not only the school library but my father has also helped me to get a membership of the district library Khardah.

I love reading all kinds of books. But especially I am passionate about reading historical fiction. For this reason, Bengali writer Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay is one of my most favorite writers. Besides these, I also love to read adventure fiction as well as mythologies.

Essay on My Hobby Reading Book within 500 Words

What is a hobby? What a person should choose as a hobby? Before going deep into the discussion of my hobby, let’s talk about the hobby itself. A hobby is something that people do especially in their leisure time mostly for enjoyment. We do not expect to get paid for our hobbies.

These are some habits that come from inside us due to our natural internal tendency as well as passion. Hobbies include a wide range of activities. It can be collecting something like coins or stamps or leaves, fine arts activities like painting, dancing,  Creative works like gardening, writing poetry, etc. Or it can simply be reading books, like what I have chosen as my hobby of life.

At the very beginning, I want to say that I literally admire my hobby, and one of my playschool teachers inspired me to fall in love with reading books when I was at my very early age. I still remember she used to bring me many kinds of colorful interesting books full of amazing stories as well as pictures.

At that age, I fond of those kinds of books. Later on, I came to know that those books are known as comics. I have read so many comics since my early childhood. Tintin, Phantom, Dennis the Menace, Hada Bhoda, Nonte-Phonte is a few among them. My parents always appreciate my hobby of reading books. For me, reading any book is the way of my utmost relaxation.

When I get tremendously bored of my regular monotonous life, at that point my storybooks help me to travel in some dream location being a part of some exciting adventure of imagination. After going to high school, I got exclusive access to my school’s students’ library and a different world opened there for me. From then, I borrow books so many kinds of books from my school library and read them thoroughly.

Here, I would like to mention my school librarian sir Mr. Paresh Pathak who helps me to choose the proper book according to my age and reading tendency. From my school library, I have read many works of great authors like Guru Rabindranath Tagore, Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay, Satyajit Ray, and many more.

Recently, I have developed a special interest in magic realism. Very recently, I was reading a work of the great Nobel laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The name of the book is very famous One Hundred Years of Solitude. It is an amazing work that led me to a different fantasy world along with the dark humorous touch of eternal truth.

I’ve also read some works of Franz Kafka. His famous work The Metamorphosis will be very close to my heart always. For these also all credit goes my school librarian sir. He first suggested me to read something unconventional out of the box.

I got the first book of Gabriel Garcia Marquez from him. Moreover, I learned about magic realism from him as well. I believe that no matter what happens with human beings, but books, stories, and realization are eternal. They will never abandon me in my entire life.

That was all about essay writing on my hobby reading books. Here in the session, I have tried to write some essays on the very topic following every method and all possible perspectives. Moreover, I have also tried to write them for students of different classes. Besides, I maintained the word limit relevant for various examinations.

Hope you found this session helpful as per your requirement. Let us know your valuable opinion as well as suggestions for this session in the comment section below. Thank you; see you again very soon.

Short Essay on Love for Reading:

Reading is an incredible experience that transports us to different worlds and teaches us valuable life lessons. It’s a form of escape, relaxation, and education all wrapped in one. For me, reading is a love affair that started at a very young age. I was fascinated by the stories that unfolded before my eyes and how they made me feel.

As I grew older, my love for reading only intensified, and it has become an integral part of my life. Through books, I have traveled to far-off places, learned about different cultures and perspectives, and discovered new passions. Reading is not just a hobby; it’s a way of life that brings endless joy and fulfillment. So if you haven’t already, pick up a book and let yourself fall in love with reading. Trust me; you won’t regret it!

However, the sad reality is that not everyone shares the same love for reading. In today’s digital age, where technology has taken over our lives, many people have lost touch with the joy of reading a physical book. With social media and instant gratification at our fingertips, the patience and focus required for reading have diminished.

But the benefits of reading are undeniable. It enhances our imagination, improves concentration and memory, and expands our knowledge and vocabulary. It’s a form of self-care that allows us to disconnect from the chaos of the world and immerse ourselves in a different reality.

So if you want to experience the magic of reading but don’t know where to start, here’s a tip: find a genre that interests you and start with small doses of reading. Set aside a few minutes every day to read, and slowly increase the time as you start to enjoy it more. Don’t give up if you don’t like a book; there are countless options out there waiting for you

I believe that reading is a great way to learn and expand our horizons. It allows us to explore new ideas, cultures, and perspectives without actually traveling. And the best part is, we can do it from the comfort of our own home.

Short Essay on My Hobby Reading Novels:

Novels have always been a source of entertainment and knowledge for people all around the world. Some may argue that with the rise of technology, traditional forms of reading like novels are slowly fading away. However, I believe that there is still something special about getting lost in the pages of a good novel.

Reading has always been my favorite hobby since I was a child. As I grew older, my interests shifted from picture books to novels. For me, there is no greater joy than curling up with a cup of coffee and a good book on a rainy day.

Novels have the power to transport us to different worlds, times, and places. They allow us to experience different perspectives and emotions through the characters we meet on the pages. Reading novels has not only increased my knowledge about different cultures and societies, but it has also helped me develop empathy and understanding towards others.

One of the things that I love most about reading novels is the ability to escape reality for a little while. In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in our daily routines and responsibilities. Reading allows us to take a break, to disconnect from our daily lives and immerse ourselves in the lives of fictional characters.

Sometimes I like to read about history, other times I prefer a light-hearted comedy. No matter what mood I am in, there is always a book that will match it.

  • Essay on Reading Books

The habit of Reading Books is considered to be one of the most elite habits of all. Books are the means to store precious information either in a textual or pictorial manner. A book is such a wonderful and magnificent object that it takes a whole different amount of passion and discipline to construct a book and the same passion to study and sink that knowledge within. Here are a few sample essays on reading books.

100 Words Essay on Reading Books

200 words essay on reading books, 500 words essay on reading books.

Essay on Reading Books

Reading books is an incredible experience that can transport you to different worlds, introduce you to new ideas and cultures, and broaden your understanding of the world. It's a form of escape from the daily routine, and a way to engage with characters, stories and events that would not be possible in real life. Whether you prefer fiction or nonfiction, books have the power to challenge, inspire, and entertain. With the turn of each page, you gain new knowledge, develop empathy, and engage in introspection. Reading books is a lifelong journey of discovery and growth that can enrich your life in countless ways.

Reading books is an activity that has been enjoyed by people of all ages and cultures for centuries. This pastime offers numerous benefits, both for individuals and society as a whole.

One of the most significant benefits of reading books is the improvement of one's cognitive skills . By reading, we engage our brains, and the more we read, the more we exercise our cognitive abilities, including our ability to concentrate, comprehend, and retain information. This leads to enhanced problem-solving skills, better memory and a greater ability to understand complex concepts.

Another benefit of reading books is the expansion of one's knowledge and understanding of the world. Through reading, we have the opportunity to gain insights into different cultures, time periods, and ways of life. This can broaden our perspectives and help us become more informed and understanding citizens of the world. In addition, books can challenge our beliefs and assumptions, providing opportunities for personal growth and intellectual development.

Reading books is also a great form of entertainment . Whether we are reading a mystery, a romance, or a science-fiction novel, books can provide hours of escape and enjoyment. They allow us to immerse ourselves in different worlds, meet new characters, and experience new emotions. This form of entertainment provides a welcome break from the stresses of daily life and can help reduce anxiety and promote relaxation.

The habit of reading books is not just a hobby but a complete lifestyle . The way it brings development in one’s character and personality from within is just magical. The importance of reading is to give people the ability to self-study but has numerous other benefits. When you read, you explore your true prospect of thinking. You get the venture of how the same lines could deliver a brand new set of thoughts and pictures in your mind just with a little change in the emotions. This is the kind of self-exploration reading provides.

Having a diverse set of knowledge can be of great help as it removes the bar of limited knowledge . Every social group has a different set of interests and by consuming all of that in yourself, you allow yourself to become a part of any group easily. A person who consumes more knowledge is considered the wisest. Your ideas are what draws people to you, wanting them to listen more and makes you one of the interesting people they interact with.

Reading is the most important means of human-to-human communication and getting to know different cultures, leading to the development and maturation of human language abilities, and is the source of development and mature human personality. Reading is very important to increase self-confidence, develop and strengthen character by acquiring a wealth of information and experience that a person needs in all areas of life, and to become an educated person. Not everyone in their lives gets the gift of knowledge and the ability to comprehend what they are looking at. Not everyone is privileged enough to be able to widen their knowledge without the help of someone else.

Reading is an art, and to have this art is equal to having the greatest weapon in your hand. No one can steal your ability to read once you learn it. You become free to consume knowledge about any topic you like.

Significance of Reading

Reading leads to the expansion of human thinking and intellectual capacities and strengthens your spirit. Every genre teaches something whether it is fictional or non-fictional. When fiction teaches you to imagine, self-help teaches you how to live life to the fullest. Reading is not limited to books only, you can read wherever you want, whatever you want and whenever you want and it all will be worth it. Knowledge is never known to be a curse and what is not a curse, is always beneficial.

My Reading Experience

The kind of books that got me into reading are self-help books. They inspired me in a way no other genre could. The writer Mark Manson is the greatest of all time to me. If you'll just search for self-help books over the internet then among the best sellers, two of the books would be his. The kind of discipline they brought into my life transformed me into a completely different person. These kinds of books give us an opportunity to dive deep into ourselves and learn about our true potential which is what happened to me and brought me into writing.

My Favourite Hobby

If I were to pick one favourite hobby of mine out of the many I have, I will definitely pick gardening. I developed a taste for dancing when I was very young. The way my feet moved to the rhythm of the music convinced my parents that I was a born dancer. Dancing is very uplifting as well as economical.

I have always had a love for music and dance. However, I never realized the utter joy they bring to humans. Dancing gives us a lot of exercises. It teaches us to move our body rhythmically and feel the beat of every song. This kind of physical exercise is extremely delightful and enjoyable.

Moreover, dance also taught me how to stay strong and push my limits. I have had many injuries while dancing, too many bruises and cuts but that didn’t stop me from pursuing it further. In fact, it pushes me to do my best and realize my potential more than ever.

I have enrolled in dancing classes because I wish to make my hobby my career. I feel we all should do things which we enjoy doing. Everyone is running after money and in this race, they give up their likings and preferences. I have learned from this race and decided to not take part in it. I wish to take the road less traveled by and take on challenges most people don’t dare to.

In short, my hobby of dancing makes me feel alive and well. It is the only thing I look forward the most to. Thus, I hope to achieve my dream of being a professional dancer and making way for people who wish to make careers out of their hobbies.

My hobby is reading books. Reading a book is one of my favorite pass times and since I work with words for a living it is also one of my favorite work tasks. There are no words that can describe my admiration and respect for the written word and the modest book that houses them. Even though great thinker of antiquity like Socrates despised the written word calling it unresponsive and dead we have to give out thanks to its ability to conserve knowledge for generations.

My hobby reading books is the best way to escape from the torment of the world and to rest in a world of imagination. Undisturbed by the troubles of my life, my mind can rest from all the stress it goes through every day and find comfort in the words of wise writers or happiness in those that like more light-hearted topics.

Not only do I read books but I also collect them and spend endless hours searching for the right edition for their collection. I even save up money so that I can buy books and extend my library or spend fortunes on rare historic manuscripts.

The fact of the matter is that there is no better way for me to rest and at the same time practice my brain by reading a book, so as far as my hobby reading books goes this way, it is the best pass time I can have. “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”

We have all heard of this adage time and again and it also throws light on how important it truly is to make sure that we all have a hobby.

The game of cricket:

Well, my hobby is cricket as I have been enjoying this sport since a very tender age. I remember gazing from the winnow of my room and watching the grown-ups immerse themselves in a game of cricket. I would spend hours watching them and remembering the different shots, the way the bowlers threw the ball at different angles and even imagined myself excelling at cricket.

The need for passion:

I believe that regardless of what we choose, it is important for each one of us to have a hobby. My hobby is something which keeps me going and it adds to my verve and energy. If you develop a good hobby, it will make sure that you would have something to unwind your mind.

When I go out to play cricket, in that moment, I do not think of anything else as I am cool, composed and nothing else matters. So, if you have not yet found your thing which you can truly call as a hobby, I suggest you do so.

I have a lot of hobbies to pass my time. One of such things is drawing. Even when I was a little child, drawing has always made me happy. Sitting quietly in a place, I can draw for hours. It keeps me busy and relaxes my mind. There is a little secret to why I love drawing so much.

As a person, I am less talkative. Because of that, there are very few friends in my life. The thing is that, instead of speaking out everything, I prefer to express my emotions silently. And drawing just helps me do that.

I wish to pursue drawing for the rest of my life. It is my dream to become a true artist one day and that is only possible with regular practice and devotion.

Introduction:

My hobby is dancing. Dancing is the art of performing purposefully selected sequence of movements by humans. Dance is a beautiful hobby that slowly builds in an individual. Dancing becomes a hobby to people who like to listen to music because as they listen, they tend to accompany the beats with dance moves. Although some people might be enjoying music but they are unable to dance because dancing is a performance that requires a skill that not everyone can master.

How it began:

Ever since I was a child, I have been chubby and so my parents had to sign me up for dancing lessons so that I can get physically fit. The dancing lessons seemed enjoyable but when I joined the first class I was unable to dance. I developed a strong determination to learn how to dance because by nature I do not like to accept failure. Within a few weeks, I had learned how to dance and it grew in me and dancing became my hobby. I would dance everywhere and that is how I grew fond of my hobby dancing.

Benefits of My Hobby Dancing:

Through my hobby dancing, I was able to lose weight and my chubbiness was gone. The regular dancing that I have been doing has kept me fit. Sometimes I make money from dancing especially during the holidays. Dancing at events or festivals earns me money. At school, I have won awards because I participate in dance as an extracurricular activity. It is a great feeling to have dancing as my hobby because it is what I love and enjoy.

Who are we without our hobbies? Apart from our physical appearances, the collection of the things we do is what makes us distinct from the next person. While there are things we do simply because we have to, we do others because we love to.

Hobbies are things we do because we have a natural inclination to do so. They give us so much pleasure that we would spend our life time doing it. This is why people try to build their respective professions around their hobbies. By so doing, an ordinarily difficult task suddenly becomes simple.

My love for sewing:

Though I have a lot of hobbies, my love for sewing stands out from the crowd. It all started when my mother bought a sewing machine when I was younger. I was immediately fascinated by the mechanical excellence of the equipment. First, it was the way the machine rolled. Then I was puzzled about the thread movement and how it miraculously turned torn pieces into masterpieces.

Subsequently, my curiosity became a source of entertainment. I would play around the machine and time would disappear while I do so. I would cut my old clothing and run it through the machine just to see it move. Slowly and surely, I became enchanted with sewing so much that it dominated my thought and became my hobby.

Now, I would not leave a single week without creating something adorable with the sewing machine. A few moments spent away from this intriguing environment feels like an eternity. What’s more, I have found that sewing has a therapeutic effect on me. It helps clear my thought and keeps me focused on a single task. Though there is financial gain in this endeavor I do it simply for the thrill.

Me and my hobby:

Sewing is my hobby and it is refreshing to me but over time I realized that by virtue of my love for this craft I became interested in related fields. First, I have to create a sketch of what to sew. This process is a purely creative one. As I draw, I can picture what I would do to the real fabric when I eventually get on the machine. I also visualize what the eventual dress would look like on me or whoever would eventually wear it.

Then, I cut pieces of the fabric as outlined in my drawings. The cutting stage is mainly about precision. The materials have to be systematically shaped in such a way that it fits the measurement taken. Any deviation from this would lead to undesired results.

Finally, the pieces are carefully held together by the automated needle of the machine. This is the most fulfilling part of the process. This is so because seeing the conceptualized idea come to bare serves as an icing on the cake. However, the feeling of excitement I experience after the cloth is made quickly evaporates. I am immediately left with the desire to start over again. Though the process might seem mechanical or even uninspiring to an onlooker, I wouldn’t trade my hobby of sewing for anything else in the world.

Any activity which one does for pleasure is called as a hobby. It can anything ranging from reading books, spending time with your pets, travelling around, talking to new people, just anything which gives immense pleasure to a person and relieves a person of the tensions of daily life. I too have a hobby which is quite common in the world as so many people do it.

Slowly as we all grew up this hobby of reading newspapers in the morning developed into a full-time activity of reading which came around.

Overall these years, I have the pleasure of reading the Harry Potter series, which still remain the best, The Shiva Trilogy from Amish Tripathi, books from good authors both from India and abroad.

We all participate in some kind of activity in line with our interests that we derive joy and happiness from; this activity is our hobby. We all have different hobbies based on our interests, dislikes and likes.

Types of Hobbies:

There are a lot of different types of hobbies that we can show interest in and develop, examples of hobbies are singing, dancing, playing outdoor or indoor games, drawing, collecting antiques, bird watching, writing, photography, reading, eating, playing, sports, music, gardening, cooking, watching TV, talking and any other activity you can think of. Our different hobbies that become a source of earning money and a means of livelihood and we can build a very successful career out of our hobbies. A hobby is meant to be enjoyed in our leisure time but it can become a lot more than that.

My Hobbies:

One popular misconception is that we can have only one hobby; this is totally not true. As a child growing up, I loved and enjoyed cooking and I would spend hours watching cooking programmes and watching my parents cook. Sooner rather than later, I also started trying out different recipes and dishes I had seen on TV and sometimes even tweaked a few things and made delicacies of my own. Cooking gave my childhood so much joy and bliss which made it one of my hobbies, I could cook all day and I get just happy at the thought of trying out a new recipe. Another hobby of mine is soccer which is kind of an accidental hobby (if there is anything like that). I had always loved watching football (or soccer) and was pretty good at analysis and understanding of the game but I never really tried playing the sport because of my first hobby that is cooking which meant I was more of the indoor person. Fate would have it that one of my close friends was on the varsity soccer team and all the goalkeepers got injured so he told me about an open audition for the position of goalkeeper and I just decided to try out. I was wonderful at the try outs and got a spot on the varsity soccer team, I became a pretty brilliant goalkeeper and I look forward to every opportunity to get on the field of play. There is this feeling of fulfilment and satisfaction I get anytime I am on the field of play. It is very possible to have more than one hobby so open yourself to the possibilities of all the different activities and interesting things around us.

My Favourite Hobby:

My favourite hobby is gardening. I spend most of my leisure time when I am not cooking or playing soccer in gardening. Gardening has been a huge source of knowledge, education, delight and entertainment to me. I have had the opportunity to learn a lot of new things on flowers, plants, vegetables, butterflies and even birds from gardening. My parents have a little plot of land where I pursue and practice this hobby. I have different varieties of vegetables, flowers and a few fruit trees in my garden. Some of the vegetables I grow are carrots, tomatoes, cauliflower, cabbage, spinach, radish, chillies, bitter gourd, etc. I also grow flowers like jasmine, roses, lilies, merry gold, carnation, poppies, flux and forget-me-not. These flowers make the garden a delight to behold and give the garden a soothing fragrance.

There are a few fruit-trees in the garden including banana, mango, guava and pomegranate. The garden is visited often by quite a number of birds and there are even some birds are live permanently on the fruit trees. The chirping sound made by the birds and their sweet music gives the garden the perfect condition and makes it the ideal place to be.

Gardening has also helped my other hobby (soccer) by keeping me mentally alert, physically fit and very fresh. The ambience of the garden is highly invigorating, fresh and soothing; there is calmness to the atmosphere of the garden. The processes and activities involved in gardening include weeding, digging, grafting, cutting, maturing, watering and the tilling of the soil. All of these activities get me the needed physical exercise I need to make my body fit and keep me sharp mentally.

A lot of family members and friends appreciate my hobby gardening. Over the years, I have been able to develop skills needed in gardening, sometimes; my father also helps me maintain the garden. I have a worthy and wonderful collection of magazines and books on vegetables, flowers, fruit trees and also gardening overall. It is quite a wonderful experience to watch plants grow, develop and blossom.

I am not full of knowledge in gardening; sometimes, I get advice and help from a professional gardener so as to know the right thing to do. I spend a large chunk of my money purchasing manure, seeds, fertilisers, books on gardening and gardening tools and implements. I try to catch all the programmes on television about gardening, I visit plant and flower shows and also fruit and vegetable exhibition. I try my possible best to balance all my hobbies, studies and other engagements without hurting any one of them for the others.

Gardening motivates me and gives me a sense of purpose about what I can achieve with my life. Once I am gardening, I forget about all of my worries, troubles and problems of the world. I am my happiest when I am working in the garden or when I get to give my friends and my family members fruits from the garden.

My hobby is reading books. Whenever I get free time, I read books and I enjoy it. My teacher always tells us that reading is very important for children as we gain a lot of knowledge through it. My parents also buy books for me and now there is a small library in my home.

There are lots of books about freedom fighters, warriors, kings, etc. available there. Last time when I won the school proficiency, my aunt gifted me with a full collection of great fairy tales.

My favorite books are Mahabharata and 5001 fantastic facts. Reading also helps me to gain confidence and prepare for school quiz competitions.

The Ethicist

Should i lie so that my cousin can have a catholic wedding.

The magazine’s Ethicist columnist on whether to fib for a relative, especially when you don’t think the ends justify the means.

An illustration of a man and a woman flanking each side of a wedding portrait. The man, the groom's cousin, places a card with a frowning mouth over the groom's face, presumably hiding the groom’s smile. The woman, the groom's new fiancée, holds a frown-mouth card and expresses confusion.

By Kwame Anthony Appiah

A few years ago, my cousin became single after an end to a decades-long marriage. Both he and I are Catholic, and the rules on divorce aren’t as clean-cut as they are under the law. Because my cousin and his ex-wife were married in a Catholic wedding, it means that, as far as the Catholic Church is concerned, my cousin and his ex are still married in the eyes of God.

In recent years, my cousin has found a new partner. He loves her dearly and recently proposed. His fiancée is also Catholic, has never been married and would like to have a Catholic wedding. This normally could not happen, because my cousin is already married to someone. But through a process called annulment, my cousin can petition the church and ask for his marriage to effectively be erased in the eyes of God.

For this to happen, though, he needs to have a witness to corroborate his claims, and he has come to me to help him. The problem is that he was happily married for many years and has three children who can attest to that. I feel that my cousin is not being truthful to himself or his fiancée about his marriage, and to ask me to lie to a priest to retroactively strike a marriage from the record feels like a step too far. Then again, I also care for my cousin and recognize that a Catholic wedding means a lot to him and his fiancée. If he is willing to go through with the annulment, I want to support him in his pursuit of new happiness.

Should I lie so that my cousin can marry? — Name Withheld

From the Ethicist:

The canon law concerning marriage is complex, but the grounds for declaring a marriage null are grounds that existed on your wedding day; a marriage isn’t null because it went bad — it must never have been valid. If you entered into the marriage without committing to your partner unconditionally and for life? That could count as “partial simulation” with respect to the property of marital indissolubility and permanence. The same goes for someone entering into marriage without internally forswearing infidelity, and some Catholic authorities say, in this context, that viewing pornography is equivalent to infidelity. The point is that your cousin might well be able to find grounds that didn’t radically mischaracterize the nature of the marriage.

What’s more, I’m not hearing you say that you’re the only person your cousin could enlist in order to secure an annulment. Your own sense of integrity matters; if you feel uncomfortable providing the testimony he wants, you should stand by your principles. Explain to your cousin that you support his desire to remarry but that you can’t flat-out lie about what you believe to be the nature of his marriage. I expect he could find someone else if he wanted to stick with this story. You might also encourage him to consult with a canon lawyer. It’s not obvious that his new life has to start with a whole-cloth falsification of his previous one.

Readers Respond

The previous question was from a reader who was concerned about her son’s hobby. She wrote: “My son is a freshman in high school and has recently become obsessed with Nerf and airsoft guns. He wants to upgrade his arsenal with a new ‘rifle’ for $250. I’m a pacifist and am horrified by his love of playing war with his friends in the neighborhood while there are two actual wars going on in Gaza and Ukraine, not to mention the threat of mass shootings at schools and elsewhere. … At the same time, this game-playing has gotten him and the neighborhood kids outdoors, which, given the lure of screen time and the isolating effects of the pandemic, feels like a gift. … I really don’t want to encourage this type of role-playing, but how do I keep him outdoors and around kids he loves?”

In his response, the Ethicist noted: “Secular culture, like religious culture, has its totems and taboos. For all of us, objects — a crucifix, a wedding ring, a sports car — take on meanings beyond their physical reality. So it makes sense that, for you, toy guns symbolize the harms you associate with real guns: the desire to exert control over others through intimidation or lethal force, the prospect of injury and death. … Part of what is at stake in your conflict with your son is, as you say, symbolism: Guns are at the center of the great partisan divide in our society. … As this political battle rages, I hope you’ll continue to stand up for your values and continue to explain your views about violence and warfare. Nor should you feel obliged to buy merchandise that fills you with abhorrence. But just as your son’s feelings about real guns are unlikely to be determined by his feelings about fake ones, your feelings about fake guns needn’t be shaped by your feelings about real ones.” (Reread the full question and answer here .)

As a child of the ’60s — a time of assassinations, Vietnam, the Cold War — we ran around the neighborhood with toy guns playing spy, war, etc. The phase passed and, to my knowledge, didn’t lead to violence in our adult lives. As the son gets older, the guns and war phase may be replaced by girls and cars. Consider the child’s overall behavior, mental state and level of maturity. If all is well, continue to communicate your views with him and ride it out. However, if I was a parent of a child of color, I would not let him play with a weapon of any sort; it’s too easy for a situation to be misread with devastating consequences. — Julia

The Ethicist thoroughly researched his answer and made some very good points. It seems to me that a freshman in high school is at or above the age where this interest should begin to fade. I recommend making a deal with the son that if he would engage in some more creative hobbies, the requested present would be forthcoming. If the obsession with guns doesn’t fade soon, then the deal should also include counseling. — Paul

As a parent of two children who were given real guns (and knives) by their father over my objections, I sympathize with the letter writer. Romanticizing weapons is most likely a contributing factor to the carnage in our schools. There are many great anti-violence groups that could use more support. Perhaps the son could “earn” money to pay for his hobby while volunteering — getting educated and perhaps educating others. — Elizabeth

When I became a mom and the topic of toy guns on play dates came up, I would offer: “We don’t allow children to playact rape. Why would we would we allow them to playact murder?” No one had anything to say. I believe it is our job as parents to foster the values we believe in for our children and the world. — Chris

Although I am 85 now, I once was a young mother of a son who at age 5 or 6 wanted me to buy him a gun to play war in the neighborhood. I was totally appalled, and I refused, telling him that a gun was not a toy and that we didn’t play those kinds of games in our family. Needless to say, he found a good substitute so that he could play with his friends: a stick from a tree in the neighborhood that looked like a gun. Today he is 56 and a pacifist, a feminist and an all-around athlete, so “the stick didn’t stick.” — Rachael

Paul Auster, American author of The New York Trilogy, dies aged 77

The writer of The New York Trilogy, Leviathan and 4 3 2 1 – known for his stylised postmodernist fiction – has died from complications of lung cancer

‘A literary voice for the ages’: Paul Auster remembered by Ian McEwan, Joyce Carol Oates and more

Paul Auster – a life in pictures

Paul Auster, the author of 34 books including the acclaimed New York Trilogy, has died aged 77.

The author died on Tuesday due to complications from lung cancer, the Guardian has been told.

Auster became known for his “highly stylised, quirkily riddlesome postmodernist fiction in which narrators are rarely other than unreliable and the bedrock of plot is continually shifting,” the novelist Joyce Carol Oates wrote in 2010.

His stories often play with themes of coincidence, chance and fate. Many of his protagonists are writers themselves, and his body of work is self-referential, with characters from early novels appearing again in later ones.

“Auster has established one of the most distinctive niches in contemporary literature,” wrote critic Michael Dirda in 2008. “His narrative voice is as hypnotic as that of the Ancient Mariner. Start one of his books and by page two you cannot choose but hear.”

The author was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1947. According to Auster, his writing life began at the age of eight when he missed out on getting an autograph from his baseball hero, Willie Mays, because neither he nor his parents had carried a pencil to the game. From then on, he took a pencil everywhere. “If there’s a pencil in your pocket, there’s a good chance that one day you’ll feel tempted to start using it,” he wrote in a 1995 essay .

While hiking during a summer camp aged 14, Auster witnessed a boy inches away from him getting struck by lightning and dying instantly – an event that he said “absolutely changed” his life and that he thought about “every day”. Chance, “understandably, became a recurring theme in his fiction,” wrote the critic Laura Miller in 2017. A similar incident occurs in Auster’s 2017 Booker-shortlisted novel 4 3 2 1: one of the book’s four versions of protagonist Archie Ferguson runs under a tree at a summer camp and is killed by a falling branch when lightning strikes.

Auster studied at Columbia University before moving to Paris in the early 1970s, where he worked a variety of jobs, including translation, and lived with his “on-again off-again” girlfriend, the writer Lydia Davis, whom he had met while at college. In 1974, they returned to the US and married. In 1977, the couple had a son, Daniel, but separated shortly afterwards.

Auster and Siri Hustvedt at home in Brooklyn in 2020.

In January 1979, Auster’s father, Samuel, died, and the event became the seed for the writer’s first memoir, The Invention of Solitude, published in 1982. In it, Auster revealed that his paternal grandfather was shot and killed by his grandmother, who was acquitted on grounds of insanity. “A boy cannot live through this kind of thing without being affected by it as a man,” Auster wrote in reference to his father, with whom he described himself having an “un-movable relationship, cut off from each other on opposite sides of a wall”.

Auster’s breakthrough came with the 1985 publication of City of Glass, the first novel in his New York trilogy. While the books are ostensibly mystery stories, Auster wielded the form to ask existential questions about identity. “The more [Auster’s detectives] stalk their eccentric quarry, the more they seem actually to be stalking the Big Questions – the implications of authorship, the enigmas of epistemology, the veils and masks of language,” wrote the critic and screenwriter Stephen Schiff in 1987.

Auster published regularly throughout the 80s, 90s and 00s, writing more than a dozen novels including Moon Palace (1989), The Music of Chance (1990), The Book of Illusions (2002) and Oracle Night (2003). He also became involved in film, writing the screenplay for Smoke, directed by Wayne Wang, for which he won the Independent Spirit award for best first screenplay in 1995.

In 1981, Auster met the writer Siri Hustvedt and they married the following year. In 1987 they had a daughter, Sophie, who became a singer and actor. Auster’s 1992 novel Leviathan, about a man who accidentally blows himself up, features a character called Iris Vegan, who is the heroine of Hustvedt’s first novel, The Blindfold.

Auster was better known in Europe than in his native United States: “Merely a bestselling author in these parts,” read a 2007 New York magazine article , “Auster is a rock star in Paris.” In 2006, he was awarded Spain’s Prince of Asturias prize for literature, and in 1993 he was given the Prix Médicis Étranger for Leviathan. He was also a Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

In April 2022, Auster and Davis’s son, Daniel, died from a drug overdose. In March 2023, Hustvedt revealed that Auster was being treated for cancer after having been diagnosed the previous December. His final novel, Baumgartner, about a widowed septuagenarian writer, was published in October.

Auster is survived by Hustvedt, their daughter Sophie Auster, his sister Janet Auster, and a grandson.

Yes, People Still Buy Books

How a viral post got some key statistics wrong..

This essay was adapted from Lincoln Michel’s newsletter Counter Craft.  Subscribe here.

Last week the article “ No One Buys Books ,” by Elle Griffin, went viral, topping Substack categories and being shared widely on social media. It’s easy to understand why. Publishing is an opaque industry, and Griffin’s piece—which collects quotes and statistics from the 2022 Justice Department suit against Penguin Random House, in which the government successfully blocked PRH’s $2.2 billion purchase of Simon & Schuster—is filled with shocking claims. Over 90 percent of books sell fewer than 1,000 copies; 50 percent of books sell fewer than 12 copies. The article paints a nearly apocalyptic portrait of traditional publishing, in which nothing works, few make money, nobody reads, and the whole industry might go poof at any moment. This vision is appealing to many people, including writers who (fairly or unfairly) feel stymied by the industry, popularists who think reading itself is a snobby hobby, and tech types who mock “paywalled dead trees.” The only problem is, the picture isn’t true.

Let me say first that Griffin does an admirable job collecting these quotes, and much of the overall thrust is correct: Most people don’t buy books, sales for most titles are lower than many think, and big publishing works on a blockbuster model where a few hits—plus perennial backlist sellers—comprise the bulk of sales. It’s also true that books don’t occupy as central a place in the culture as they did before film, streaming TV, video games, and social media fragmented culture. (That ship sailed many decades ago, however.)

Still, many of the statistics here are wrong or misleading in part because they were intended to be. PRH’s legal strategy was to present publishing as an imperiled, dying industry beset on all sides by threats like Amazon—a characterization intended to convince the court that a merger was necessary for publishing’s survival. There may be truth to that idea, and I’m not saying any of the quotes are  lies .   I’m saying the quotes and statistics are tailored toward a specific narrative in the context of a legal battle. So, read them with a $2.2 billion–sized grain of salt.

Before we dive into numbers, though, let’s step back and look at the biggest question: Do people buy books?

Americans Buy Over 1 Billion Books a Year

How many books are sold in the United States? The only reliable tracker we have is Circana BookScan , which logs point of sale—i.e., customer purchases at stores, websites, etc.—for most of the print market. BookScan counted 767 million print sales in 2023. It collects this data directly from reporting bookstores, chains, and online retailers that combine for the majority of the market. BookScan claims to cover 85 percent of print sales, although many in publishing think the percentage is smaller. Many books sold at book festivals or in-person at readings are not reported to BookScan, for example, nor are library sales. (Almost every author will tell you that their royalty reports show notably more sales than BookScan captures, sometimes by  orders of magnitude .)

Still, I’ll be conservative and assume that 85 percent is the correct figure. This means that close to 900 million  print  books are sold to customers each year. Add in e-books  and the quickly growing audiobook market, and the total number of new books sold is over 1 billion. Again, this is a conservative estimate. And it does not include used book sales or library purchases. Americans do buy books.

Is 1-billion-plus a lot of books? This depends on your point of view. For comparison’s sake, there  were 825 million movie tickets sold in the U.S. and Canada in 2023. So, more books are purchased than movie tickets, two comparable entertainment options in terms of price. On the other hand, that’s “new movies in theaters” vs. “ all  books available for sale from throughout history.” Movies are vastly more expensive to make, so far fewer movies are released each year than books are published. Individual movies are watched far more than most individual books are read.

Whether or not this “1 billion books” number is big, it’s fairly stable . Print book sales have not been decimated by digital sales/streaming in the way of so many other industries . Despite the introduction of e-books, various attempts at “Netflix for Books” services such as Oyster and Scribd , and endless cries about the death of publishing … print sales have increased in recent years, before even accounting for the millions of e-books sold and the audiobook market. Publishing is an industry with plenty of problems—believe me, I know—but there’s no reason to think it’s on its deathbed.

Why It’s So Easy to Mislead With Book Statistics

In the world of lies, damned lies, and statistics, book stats are especially easy to manipulate. I’ve already mentioned that BookScan doesn’t track all print purchases and that the stats typically don’t include e-books or audiobooks. But there are lots of ways—if, say, you are trying to persuade a judge to allow a big corporate merger—to manipulate these numbers to mislead:

Many of the quotes from the trial seem to reference  calendar year  sales—meaning they include books that have been out for only a week or a month—instead of a reasonable time frame like two years, much less lifetime sales.

Overall book sale stats apply to all books from throughout history that are still in publication. A bestseller from 1924 or 1824 might sell only 10 copies in calendar year 2024, but it might have reached 1 million in lifetime sales.

BookScan tracks by ISBNs , meaning what most people think of as a single book—e.g., one novel—actually counts as multiple books. My novel  The Body Scout   came out in four formats with different ISBNs, and so it counts as four separate books: hardcover, paperback, e-book, and audiobook. The same is true for almost every book published.

Certain types of books, like some academic texts, are barely sold in the general marketplace at all, even if they have an ISBN.

“Books” as a category includes everything from novels and memoirs to crossword puzzle collections and adult coloring books.

“Publishers” includes everything from big corporate publishers to small presses to academic presses that don’t really sell in bookstores to serious self-published authors to amateur self-published authors who may have no expectations at all of sales but just want to put a collection of cat poems out for their grandkids.

I hope you can see where I’m going with this. What the average Big 5–published book sells in one calendar year is a completely different number from what it sells over a lifetime. That number is completely different from the average book sales of all publishers, from micropresses to big corporate publishers. And that number would be completely different from the average sale of books, including the millions of self-published books.

And within any of those numbers, the statistics vary wildly by type of book. Think about movies again. When people talk about movie revenue, they’re probably restricting themselves to feature films released in theaters or movies streaming on big platforms like Netflix. (The closemouthed way the latter handles its data has already famously mucked up movie stats.) But “books” encompass everything from niche academic monographs and Sudoku puzzle collections to bestselling novels and memoirs. It would be as if “movie” statistics included educational videos, online porn streaming, and TikToks.

My point isn’t that there’s anything bad about self-published cat poems, crossword puzzles, TikToks, or anything like that. My point is that “average book sales” tell you almost nothing about, say, how well the average novel published by a big press, and widely available in bookstores, sells. (To be fair, this also means that the billion-plus number above includes lots of things we wouldn’t normally think of as books.) I went into greater depth about  book stats here .

Understanding How Books Earn Money

There’s also a lot of confusion in book publishing because the economics are both complicated and obscured. Confusion is common. I’ll look at just one example from the original article, because it illustrates two common misunderstandings:

Books don’t make money If I look at the top 10 percent of books … that 10 percent level gets you to about 300,000 copies sold in that year. And if you told me I’m definitely going to sell 300,000 copies in a year, I would spend many millions of dollars to get that book. —Madeline McIntosh, CEO, Penguin Random House US Publishing houses pay millions of dollars for a book that sells only 300,000 copies??? Well, because books don’t sell a lot of copies, they don’t make a lot of money. … According to [consultant Nicholas] Hill, 85 percent of the books with advances of $250,000 and up never earn out their advance.

McIntosh said 300,000 copies “in a year” rather than in lifetime sales, so we are talking calendar-year sales, not lifetime sales. (See above.) A book that sold “only” 300,000 in one year is going to sell many more copies in other years. It has a good chance of being a perennial backlist seller, even. That is the goal of any publisher, since they sell with almost no overhead or marketing costs. Such a book would certainly make many, many millions for a publisher. What company wouldn’t pay millions if they were “definitely going” to make even more millions back? Business 101.

I think the above quote also might give the impression that books “don’t make money” when they don’t earn out advances. This is a common misconception. A book can be profitable for a publisher well before the author earns out the advance. (If you don’t know, an advance is money paid upfront to an author. Authors don’t earn royalties until a publisher has made back that advance money out of the author’s per-sale share.)

The actual math of bookselling is complicated since royalty rates vary by format, price points can fluctuate, and big publishers have different distribution deals from small ones. That said, I’ll do a bit of simplistic napkin math to explain.

Let’s say the average book sells for $20. Of that, about half goes to the retailer and distributor and the other half to the publisher. Of the publisher’s $10, about $1 goes to pay back the advance—or to royalties when the book “earns out.” (Again, I’m simplifying. Standard royalty rates are between 7.5 percent and 25 percent, depending on format.) So, if a book sells 1 million copies, then the publisher makes $10 million, with $1 million going toward earning out the author’s advance. If the publisher paid an advance of $3 million, the author hasn’t earned out … but the publisher still made $7 million in revenue.

That’s not profit. Publishers have expenses to pay back, including the costs of printing the book and marketing. Economies of scale come in here. But you can see how books can be profitable well before advances are earned out. Indeed, here’s another quote from Griffin’s article, from Simon & Schuster CEO Jonathan Karp, that supports that: “About half of the books we publish make money, and a much lower percentage of them earn back the advance we pay.” Along these lines, it’s a myth that a book that hasn’t earned out is a failure. It’s even possible to have a long and lucrative career without ever earning out.

You might think that only 50 percent of books making money for the publisher is a bad thing, but most comparable industries operate this way. In entertainment, a few big winners have always funded the rest.

What Does Your Average Novel Sell?

I assume most people reading both Griffin’s article and this one don’t care about the sales of adult coloring books and pocket copies of the Constitution and so on. What they’re interested in are the sales of what most people think of when they hear the word books : novels, biographies, essay collections, story collections, and the like. So, cutting through the noise, how do those sell?

Sadly, you can’t really say. The answer depends on the type and genre of book and the type of publisher. Someone from a prestige Big 5 imprint whose books are often award contenders and bestsellers once told me any book that sold  fewer  than 25,000 in print was a failure for the publisher. On the other hand, many literary fiction writers have told me that anything  more  than 5,000 sales is a success. So, some small-press editors might be happy with 1,000 sales.

What I can say is that no book you’re likely to have heard of is selling only 12 copies or anything near that. Most new books in bookstores are selling, at a minimum, hundreds of copies and most of the time thousands. The popular ones are selling tens of thousands, and the breakout hits are selling hundreds of thousands or even millions.

I would add here that it’s not true that only movie star memoirs and James Patterson–type commercial thrillers are breakout hits. The NYT bestseller list often includes award winners, and so-called literary fiction titles like The Goldfinch and All the Light We Cannot See can sell in the millions. And many authors earn a living —or, if not a living, then a significant chunk of a living—from their books without ever becoming as famous as Stephen King or Danielle Steel.

Again, I’m not saying all is great in publishing land. Certainly, I wish that the novels I love were selling millions instead of thousands of copies. But I imagine few are shocked that books in 2024 do not occupy the place in the culture they did 100 years ago, before video games, cellphones, social media, streaming TV, and the like dominated our time.

One telling summary  from Griffin’s article was this:

Penguin Random House US has guidelines for who gets what advance: Category 1: Lead titles with a sales goal of 75,000 units and up Advance: $500,000 and up Category 2: Titles with a sales goal of 25,000–75,000 units Advance: $150,000–$500,000 Category 3: Titles with a sales goal of 10,000–25,000 units Advance: $50,000–$150,000 Category 4: Titles with a sales goal of 5,000 to 10,000 units Advance: $50,000 or less

This seems like a fair look at the relationship between advances and big publishers’ expectations . The lowest sales target is in the thousands. Obviously, many books will fail to hit their targets, though typically not by 4,988 copies. On the other end, anything selling more than 75,000 is a rare hit. If you’re on a big publisher, you are likely to sell a few thousand copies. If you’re lucky, tens of thousands. If you’re exceptionally lucky, hundreds of thousands or millions.

Adding in E-book and Audio Numbers

The above are, I think, just print sales. E-book and audio sales are trickier to handle because of subscription services and because prices vary wildly for individual titles.  The Body Scout —like most novels—has routinely been put on Kindle Daily Deals and the like, selling for $1.99–$3.99 for limited periods of time. Industry professionals have told me that for most literary fiction titles, e-book sales are about half of print sales. But for some genres, especially science fiction and fantasy, e-book sales can easily exceed print sales. (For what it’s worth, I just looked up the sales of  The Body Scout , and it’s almost exactly 50 percent hardcover/paperback and 50 percent e-book/audio.)

Selling and Reading Are Different Things

But it’s good to remember that everything talked about here is  sales  of new books, a category that is not the same as  reading . Many people purchase used books or check out books from the library or borrow books from friends. And that’s not even getting into reading magazines, Substacks, and more. (Of course, people also buy lots of books they never read …)

There’s a lot I think publishers could change, including focusing on big advance books and celebrity authors—Griffin is quite right that those acquisitions often go bust, especially with social media celebrities. Instagram and TikTok followers rarely translate to book sales. And books are certainly not at the center of culture in the way they were before TV and social media and all the rest.

Still, books endure. Publishing is still chugging along, not just in the Big 5 publishers—which account for most of these stats—but also in indie and small presses, where much of the best writing is published. If you want to keep the books coming, well, keep buying them and/or checking them out at your local library.
