NASA Contests for Students & Fun Competitions

Create & Learn Team

We are fortunate to be living in the "Second Golden Era" of space exploration and excitement about space is growing faster than a Saturn V rocket! The recent launch of the James Webb Space Telescope, the search for Earth-like exoplanets, the growth of space tourism and (soon!) sending astronauts to the moon are achievements we can all be excited about. What better way to get involved in space programs than through NASA contests for students and competitions?

So today, we'll share some fun contests and competitions that will challenge your space skills and creativity and prepare you for future space adventures. Good luck and have fun! And if you love NASA, be sure to sign up for our fun, free Explore Space & NASA live events. Students in grades 1-4 will also enjoy our weekly NASA STEM club.

1. Engineering Design Challenges

NASA Glenn Engineering Design Challenges are for grade 6-8 students. Facilitators can modify challenges to fit the needs of their students or learning environment. These challenges are open for anyone to use at any time, however the NASA Glenn Office of STEM engagement occasionally offers solicitations to provide funding for facilitating a selected challenge during a specific window of time such as a summer or a school year. Here are a few examples:

Keep It Cool

Using the engineering design process, students will design, test, and improve systems to maintain cold temperatures within a simulated cryogenic propellant tank. They will test their design against a control to see how well their insulators worked, then make improvements on their design to determine which are most effective at preventing ice melt in their simulated cryogenic tank. There is no deadline to enter. For more information contact: [email protected] .

Powered and Pumped Up

Using the engineering design process, students will design, build, and improve a stand-alone solar powered pumping system to move water as quickly as possible between two containers. Students will use light-concentrating materials, shapes, and structures to maximize the collection of simulated solar energy. The energy will then be directed toward a solar cell that will power the system to move the water. There is no deadline to enter. For more information contact: [email protected] .

2. Student Launch – Artemis Student Challenges

Student Launch challenges student teams to design, build and fly a high-powered rocket containing a science or engineering payload. It's open to teams from U.S. colleges and universities, high schools and middle schools. Teams complete a series of design reviews that mirror the NASA engineering design life cycle. Teams must successfully complete a Preliminary Design Review, Critical Design Review, Flight Readiness Review and Launch Readiness Review, which include safety briefings, analyses of vehicle and payload systems and flight test data.

This challenge runs Apr. 20-24, 2023, so registration dates for the 2022/23 challenge will be available late summer. And there are two places the event is hosted: the NASA Launch Complex (with NASA in Huntsville, Alabama) or a commercial spaceport launch site. You'll also need an adult mentor as a team member throughout the project. For more details contact: [email protected] .

3. NASA International Space Apps Challenge (Space Apps)

The NASA International Space Apps Challenge (Space Apps) is an international hackathon for coders, scientists, designers, storytellers, makers, builders, technologists, and others in cities around the world, where teams engage  (NASA’s) free and open data to address real-world problems on Earth and in space. Better yet, this challenge is open to all ages.

For one weekend each October, participants from around the world come together over a 48-hour period to solve challenges submitted by NASA personnel. After the hackathon, project submissions are judged by space agency experts and winners are selected for one of 10 Global Awards. For more information contact: [email protected] .

4. Breakthrough Junior Challenge

The Breakthrough Junior Challenge is an annual global competition for students to inspire creative thinking about science. Students ages 13 to 18 from countries across the globe are invited to create and submit original videos (3:00 minutes in length maximum) that bring to life a concept or theory in the life sciences, physics or mathematics. The submissions are judged on the student’s ability to communicate complex scientific ideas in engaging, illuminating, and imaginative ways. The contest is now open!

5. Great Lunar Expedition for Everyone Workshop

High school and undergraduate students are invited to get involved in lunar exploration! Join GLEE for a remote, self-paced workshop for students to work hands-on with their very own LunaSat, a sticky note-sized spacecraft with solar panels and science sensors. The 2024-2025 Student Writing Contest topic will go live in mid-October and submissions will be accepted from the end of October through January 2025. We look forward to having YOU participate!

Topic Overview

According to Cornell Law School, civil liberties are:

  • Freedoms guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution (primarily from the First Amendment ). They are natural rights which are inherent to each person. While they are commonly referred to as " rights ," civil liberties actually operate as restraints on how the government can treat its citizens . As such, the First Amendment's language (" congress shall make no law") explicitly prohibits the government from infringing on liberties, such as the freedom of speech .
  • Civil liberties are constitutionally protected freedoms.
  • Civil rights are claims built upon legislation .
  • A violation of civil rights affords the injured party a right to legal action against the violator. For example, the freedom of religion is recognized as both a civil right and civil liberty; it is protected under the Constitution from government infringement (liberty) as well as under the Civil Rights Act of 1964 from being the basis of discriminatory practices.

Approximately 33,000 Japanese Americans served in the US Armed Forces during World War II. Many of them voluntarily enlisted despite having their civil liberties infringed upon by the US government with the execution of Executive Order 9066 in 1942. This order forcibly incarcerated around 122,000 men, women and children in relocation centers in the interior of the United States.

The majority of those 33,000 served in the 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team or as linguists with the Military Intelligence Service. The 100th/442nd remains the most decorated unit for its size and duration of service in US Army history. “Go for Broke” means risking everything to win big. This was the motto adopted by these units.

Members of the 442nd

Stem essay contest winners earn close-encounter visit to nasa.

By Doreen B. Zudell  NASA’s Glenn Research Center

Three student winners of NASA’s Power to Explore Challenge journeyed behind the scenes at NASA's Glenn Research Center and Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC) in Cleveland after drafting the top papers in the national STEM essay contest.

The competition for kindergarten through 12th grade students focused on the potential of radioisotopes . Students were challenged to learn how NASA has powered some of its most famous science missions and to dream up how their personal “superpowers” would energize their own radioisotope-powered mission.

Judges narrowed down over a thousand creative essays to 45 semifinalists, who received prize packs; nine finalists, who participated in a videoconference with NASA experts; and three winners, who were awarded a visit to NASA Glenn.

Luca Pollack , the kindergarten through fourth grade winner; Rainelle Yasa , the fifth through eighth grade winner; and Audrielle Paige Esma , the ninth through 12th grade winner, toured several research facilities including the Zero Gravity Research Facility , the Simulated Lunar Operations (SLOPE) Laboratory , and the Graphics and Visualization (GVIS) Lab . Along the way, they met with engineers and researchers to learn about NASA’s missions and the technologies that will send humans back to the Moon and on to Mars.

“I’ve always felt torn between subjects,” Esma said. “I love learning about space, but I’m also heavily interested in biology, engineering, and writing. This competition taught me that these interests can overlap, like space and writing, for example. I hope whatever I end up doing in the future will encapsulate as many of my interests as possible.”

The next day students and their families traveled to GLSC, which houses the NASA Glenn Visitor Center. Accompanied by a member of NASA’s Radioisotope Power Systems (RPS) team, the group toured the visitor center and explored the many interactive displays.

“It was our pleasure to host the three student winners of the Power to Explore Challenge, and I hope that this visit will further inspire and motivate them to pursue their interests in science and exploration,” said Carl Sandifer, manager for NASA’s RPS Program. “We are so impressed by the ideas and quality of the essays submitted this year, and we can’t wait to what new ideas student come up with for next year’s challenge.”

The Power to Explore Challenge asked students to learn about the RPS, a type of “nuclear battery” that NASA uses to explore some of the most extreme destinations in our solar system and beyond. Students then wrote about their own power to achieve goals in 200 words or less.

NASA will hold its third annual Power to Explore Challenge later this fall. For more information on the challenge, visit: https://rps.nasa.gov/STEM/Power-to-Explore.
