Love Action Drama movie review: Nayanthara is a mere aside in an immature Nivin Pauly dramedy

Love Action Drama is a romance in which it is impossible to figure out from start to finish why the central couple are into each other or whether they are into each other at all.

Love Action Drama movie review: Nayanthara is a mere aside in an immature Nivin Pauly dramedy

Language : Malayalam and Tamil

Rating : 1.5 (out of 5 stars)

“Just name one quality of Dinesh that has caused you to like him,” Shoba’s worried father quietly beseeches her. His beautiful daughter has nothing to say in response. The fact that she is supposedly in love with the Dinesh in question and this scene comes well into the second half of Love Action Drama speaks volumes about their relationship. An answer is nowhere in sight even when the end credits roll around, which speaks volumes too about the vapid writing of this film.

It takes a special effort to cast Malayalam cinema’s sweetheart Nivin Pauly and Tamil-Telugu megastar  Nayanthara in the same project yet somehow end up with a flat, man-centric, immature dramedy. Actor turned directorial debutant Dhyan Sreenivasan manages that feat. You might imagine that Dhyan would be getting reams of advice at home - he is, after all, the son of the venerable veteran actor-writer Sreenivasan and younger sibling of the supremely successful actor-director-singer Vineeth Sreenivasan. His connections, genes and the star power of his lead cast are no match though for the shallow writing of this film.

Love Action Drama is a romance in which it is impossible to figure out from start to finish why the central couple are into each other or whether they are into each other at all. They say they are in love so we are forced to believe it but the writing of the bond between them is sterile. The misplaced priorities in Dhyan’s screenplay are entirely to blame. The characterisation of Shoba is sketchy at best. More time has evidently been spent styling her than writing her. The result is that Nayanthara looks stunning (although it would have helped to go easy on the oil or lotion or whatever it is that her team used to shine her arms to distraction in her introductory scene), but there is little we get to know about Shoba beyond that she is a Chennai-based Malayali who runs some sort of business, and as one man early in the film confides in another, she is that terrible F word. You know, feminist. Hawww.

Dhyan treats the female of the species like an alien race in the way a person might if he has lived in a  segregated society all his life and never had solid friendships with women. In contrast, the writing of Dinesh is detailed. So is his relationship with his friend Sagar (Aju Varghese).

Shoba and Dinesh meet when she visits Kerala for her friend’s wedding. He is an alcoholic, chain smoker and layabout, in mourning since he fancies himself to be in love with the bride who is his cousin. His feelings clearly do not run very deep, considering that by the end of the wedding he has transferred his giggly affections to Shoba.

Like George from Premam - Pauly’s 2015 blockbuster - Dinesh too is an immature guy from the beginning to the end of this journey. A film may very well be centred around a kiddish adult, the problem arises here because the film itself is kiddish. Love Action Drama is no different from Premam in the way it casually applies the word “love” to a man who saw a woman and found her hot.

Besides, Dhyan lets slip some really deep-seated prejudices masked in comedy in his film. At three places, casual remarks by his characters reveal that he believes it is a given that dark skin is ugly. And what is with Malayalam cinema’s insistence on depicting little children in serious romantic relationships? Not funny at all, please.

The use of language in Love Action Drama calls for a discussion. The manner in which conversations shift from Malayalam to Tamil and back is smooth and natural because of the milieu and the backgrounds of the characters. But the Hindi words “ beta ” (son) and “ acchha ” (okay) written into lines spoken by Renji Panicker’s character do not trip lightly off the actor’s tongue and end up coming across as a forced, somewhat tacky effort to offer evidence that he is Mumbai based.

Like many Malayalam music directors these days,  Shaan Rahman really needs to get over his apparent belief that injecting Hindi or English songs and lines into a film’s soundtrack somehow ups its cool quotient. It is hard to understand this practice. Is it that these artists think Malayalam is not cool enough? Or do they see Hindi and English as the only possible indicators of modernity and an urban Indian setting? By all means, mix languages, brother, if you can come up with something special and it fits. What though is the point you hope to make when, in a Malayalam-Tamil film set in Kerala and TN, you kick off the narrative with a Hindi-English number titled ‘ Raathein’ (Nights), a word that you cannot even get your singer Narayani Gopan to pronounce correctly, which your lyricist Preeti Nambiar then follows up with amateurish lines like “setting me afire / whatever we desire / come a little closer to me” and “all I want tonight / touching you and feeling you and loving yooooouuuu”? What is the purpose of the uninventive, heard-before refrain “ mere khayaalo ki malika tu ” (woman, you rule my thoughts) in ‘ Varavaayi’ ? The song that does manage a flow in its English-Malayalam blend is Kudukku possibly because lyricist Manu Manjith does not sound strained and because the amazing Vineeth Sreenivasan imbues “On the floor baby / hit it hard baby / rock the party baby / pattoolangi podi (if you can’t, then go to hell, woman)” with an intentionally over-done comedic tone that complements and therefore acknowledges the unapologetic silliness of it all, though I do worry about the simmering animosity towards the woman in these lines.

Love Action Drama works in parts when Dinesh and Sagar are hanging out together and making an ass of themselves. The effectiveness of some - not all - these scenes comes from the chemistry between Nivin Pauly and Aju Varghese, and their natural comic abilities. Varghese is of course cast incessantly as a comedian, Pauly’s filmography has offered him more variety. What makes him the star that he is is his ability to be as grave as his characters in films like Action Hero Biju and Kayamkulam Kochunni have required him to be, innocent and earnest as the chap he played in Bangalore Days and the silly fellow he was in Premam .

Love Action Drama taps his versatility with a narrative that repeatedly breaks its own mood by jumping from extreme intensity to extreme frivolity without warning often within the same scene. The switches are fun at first because they signal the writer-director’s keenness that we not take his film too seriously. Fair enough. The technique wears thin though as Love Action Drama ’s lack of substance becomes increasingly obvious and it wanders about aimlessly, wanders again, then wanders some more.

Late in the film some twists are set up as obstacles in the Shoba-Dinesh relationship. As it happens, they do come as interesting surprises, but their impact is greatly diluted by the absence of conviction in the first place in the relationship that is sought to be destroyed. After having misbehaved terribly with Shobha, at one point when Dinesh begs her to take him back, she says: “Convince my father.” Convince yourselves first, ya.

Love Action Drama review: Nivin Pauly-Nayanthara movie lives up to its title

Litty Simon

“On the floor baby...hit it hard baby”... is a recurring song in Love Action Drama, starring  Nivin Pauly and Nayanthara.

This includes moments when love blossoms between Dineshan, our protagonist, and Shobha, when he tries to exact revenge on his ex-girlfriend Swati, when he parties hard with his friend-cum-cousin Sagar and even when he takes on the 'villains'.

In his debut directorial, director Dhyan Sreenivasan and  his composer Shaan Rahman wisely uses the music factor to appease family audiences.

For instance, when Dineshan tries to impress Shobha and Shobha falls for him, not even once do audience hear what Dineshan speaks to Shobha and what made Shobha fall for him.

Yet the scenes are so colourful and lively with songs in the backdrop that viewers are made to forget about the reason that shapes the love story.

Then comes the action. Dhyan has once again infused comical instances between the stunt sequences to make his viewers glued and entertained. Imagine this, Dineshan arrives at a  beach restaurant to take on  the 'villains'. Realizing Dineshan's intentions,  one of them deploys a waiter to Dineshan and asks him what he wants. Dineshan orders for beef and beer.

Usually, filmmakers tend to opt for high octane background score in such scenes, but Dhyan skips that and opts for  “On the floor baby...hit it hard baby” again.

And finally, there's this drama where all's well that ends well. In order to woo Shobha, he needs to convince Shobha's father and Dineshan does all the 'dramabaazi' at his command.

Justifying the title, Love Action Drama has all the elements to be a festive entertainer. There is a good layer of fun that keeps the movie lively, though at times it backfires. In terms of storyline, there's nothing new as Dhyan treads the path of a typical rom-com.

Nivin Pauly as Dineshan plays a dimwit who is ready to sit at home doing nothing and rest on his ancestral assets. Nivin Pauly's mannerisms was perfect for Dineshan and his comic timing does work out well enough. We have seen shades of Dineshan in him with his roles from Oru Vadakkan Selfie, Premam and Bangalore Days.

On the other hand, the good looking and matured Shobha played by Nayanthara is flawless. She carries a charm throughout the movie and justifies her role. Aju Varghese as Sagar is hilarious.

Certain scenes of Nivin-Aju may even remind of Mohanlal-Jagathy combo from old Malayalam flicks. Mallika Sukumaran as Dineshan's mother also managed to grab attention. There are more funny characters and cameos and we leave that for you to discover.

Shaan Rahman has made a mark this Onam with some peppy and breezy musical numbers for the movie. He didn't even forget to infuse his earlier song 'Ente Maavum Poothe' from 'Adi Kapyare Koottamani'. Jomon T John's visualization and art direction by Ajay Mangadu need special mention.

As a simple fun-filled movie, Love Action Drama stands out. There are things that keep us interested in proceedings as Dhyan Sreenivasan focuses on making an out-an-out entertainer than delivering so called realistic or sensible content. As a debutant director, Dhyan has managed to make an enjoyable film with ease.

Love Action Drama Review - A Fun Ride With A Vibrant Nivin Pauly

Suhansid Srikanth

Dhyan Sreenivasan's debut directorial 'Love Action Drama' is very much a brother piece to his brother Vineeth Sreenivasan's much acclaimed hit 'Thattathin Marayathu'. There are more than one or two similarities to map out. To begin witj the obvious.. both films have Nivin Pauly and Aju Varghese in a supreme form. In both films, when the hero meets the heroine in a wedding.. also, in both films, they trip over and get hospitalized.

After bunch of serious films like Hey Jude, Ritchie, Kayamkulam Kochunni, Sakhavu and Michael.. Nivin Pauly as Dinesh is carefree, sober and plays out an hyper flirtatious and enthusiastic role. He sells the most silliest of comedy and cheesiest of pickup lines with his presence. His dynamics with Aju Varghese over the years really etch out the duo in a full-on fun ride.

It is pretty sad that Nayantara is again conceived more as a star actress than as a performer like how Trisha was given a role in Hey Jude or Aishwarya Rajesh in Sakhavu. She pretty much does the same thing she has done in umpteen other Tamil films. Warning the hero when he stalks - Secretly admiring it - Breaking down when he fails to get over his 'fuck boy' phase - Eventually end up with him with uproaring of music. The character doesn't have much shades to offer as well. Except for the fact that she is referred as 'feminist' by a male character.. we hardly get any trait to prove it whatsoever.

I loved certain brilliance that shined here and there like how an interval sequence is executed with popcorn flying all over gets sequentially prepared subtly way before with Aju's character taking a tub of popcorn. But otherwise, the film does everything dramatic and melodramatic. It even features a scene where a foreigner woman speaks in broken Manglish to console him and asks him to go after her.

The trap of two married men trying to spoil the marriage of their wives friend.. just because she peeps in their lives too much could have made into a story on its own. But the film brushes away all that and wanders around Dinesh's dumb play and him getting out of his drunkardness. By the time it actually lands on this story, everything gets rushed up just to pave into a climax.

There is an ensemble cast that makes the film a delight to watch. From cinematography to music.. the film deserves a theatrical watch if you would love to have a no brainer that will simply offer you solid entertainment, good laugh and a cinema that joyfully embraces a star ride.

Bottomline : Dhyan Sreenivasan's debut directorial 'Love Action Drama' is a pretty joyful entertainer that doesn't care much about magic or logic. After quite a gap, in this out and out fun ride, Nivin Pauly gets back to his vibrant best.

Love Action Drama, a romantic comedy film in the Malayalam language, was released in 2019 and marked the directorial debut of Dhyan Sreenivasan. Produced by Visakh Subramaniam and Aju Varghese, the movie features Nivin Pauly and Nayanthara in the lead roles, with music composed by Shaan Rahman.

The film premiered in Indian theaters on September 5, 2019, followed by an international release on September 13, 2019. The story revolves around Dinesh, a wealthy and confident bachelor, who endeavors to win the heart of Shobha with the assistance of his best friend Sagar, aspiring to marry her someday.

The narrative unfolds through a series of flashbacks, starting with Dinesh reminiscing about his initial encounter with Shobha and the development of their relationship. Hailing from an affluent background, Dinesh refrains from work, dedicating his time to partying and drinking with friends. Upset over his cousin Swathi’s impending marriage, Dinesh attempts to disrupt the wedding due to past complications in their childhood relationship.

As Dinesh relocates to Chennai with his friend and cousin Sagar to pursue Shobha, the story delves into their interactions and challenges. Despite initial success, conflicts arise during a birthday party, revealing Dinesh’s true intentions. Shobha discovers Dinesh’s lack of ambition and commitment, leading to a temporary separation. Dinesh’s subsequent efforts to redeem himself involve winning over Shobha’s friends and ultimately persuading Shobha to reconsider their relationship.

The narrative takes a turn as Dinesh becomes possessive, leading to suspicions about Shobha’s activities. A revelation by a stranger, showcasing manipulated photographs, prompts Dinesh to call off the wedding. Shobha’s father disapproves of Dinesh due to his drinking habits, but the situation intensifies when Dinesh uncovers a malicious plot against their relationship.

Amidst chaos and misunderstandings, Dinesh, after a tumultuous series of events, seeks forgiveness and reconciliation with Shobha. The storyline concludes with Dinesh, having overcome past challenges, enjoying an alcoholic drink and cigarette with Sagar before entering the marriage hall to wed Shobha in the present moment.

Love Action Drama Movie Review: An elegant but bland romantic comedy

Rating: ( 2.5 / 5).

For a film that's supposed to be about the romance between a man Dinesh (Nivin Pauly) and a woman, Shobha (Nayanthara), you get to see the man spending more time with his buddy Sagar (Aju Varghese) than he does with his woman. Obviously, the chemistry between Dinesh and Sagar is much better. At one point, two female characters catch Dinesh and Sagar in an awkward moment, and you can't blame them for suspecting that there is something going on between the two.

Director: Dhyan Sreenivasan Cast: Nivin Pauly, Nayanthara, Aju Varghese, Vineeth Sreenivasan

The biggest problem with Love Action Drama is that it fails to convincingly sell the love story of the main couple. It's supposedly a romantic comedy, but there is more bromance here than actual romance. There are hardly two or three scenes where we see Dinesh and Shobha together. Yes, they do meet and chat occasionally, but those moments are few and far between. The rest of the time, we only see them communicating through texts. If we aren't made to feel the depth of their relationship, how are we supposed to take it seriously?

But that is not at all. Dinesh and Shobha are not compelling characters to begin with. Now, I'm not saying that the characters have to be relatable for the film to be engaging. And it's obvious that the goal of the film is only to entertain us without being too intellectual. Even so, there has to be a certain degree of emotional conflict to get us invested in the drama.

The film is at its best whenever Dinesh makes an appearance, even though he is not funny all the time. Dinesh is someone who is thinking of girls and romance all the time. (We are told that once he didn't even spare the mannequin at the textile shop.) He is still nursing the wound of rejection from a childhood sweetheart. It's at this childhood sweetheart's wedding that Dinesh first meets Shobha. Setting up a romance at a wedding has by now become a cliche but then this film doesn't seem to care about celebrating cliches. To be fair to Nivin, it's he who revives the film whenever life seems to go out of it. Dinesh is not supposed to be a likeable character and Nivin does a fairly good job of keeping us at a distance. He is like that annoying guy in school or college you don't want to be friends with, but you laugh whenever he cracks a joke.

An attempt is made to make the narrative interesting by adopting a slightly non-linear approach but it seems redundant. The elegantly-shot film begins with Dinesh stabbing a picture of Shobha and then goes back six months to seek the reason behind that emotion. It all starts when Shobha attends the wedding of her friend, who happens to be Dinesh's childhood sweetheart. Dinesh, smitten by the half-Malayali Shobha, decides to pursue a post-graduate course in Chennai, where she resides. But in order to impress her, he has to impress her friends first. Since he is blessed with the magical ability to charm any character in the film, he manages to do just that. Instead of setting aside some time to go deeper into what drew them to each other, we get that done-to-death sequence where the couple is walking on a beach in slow motion, with one of them pointing to something in the distance.

As Shobha, Nayanthara doesn't get to do much other than look pretty and occasionally get upset with Dinesh. Dinesh is not bothered by the fact that he is jobless. He tells Shobha that after marriage, he'll get to be with her all the time since he has inherited a huge fortune from his late father. We can't figure out what it is about Dinesh that Shobha finds appealing, and neither do some of the supporting characters. There is a moment where she tells him that every little thing he does makes her happy. But at the same time, she doesn't like it when he drinks or smokes. Dinesh agrees to be a teetotaler for her sake, but it's hard to trust a guy who doesn't have a strong grip on his urges. Why should we believe that he is going to change as soon as he gets married? There are several moments in the film where the couple goes through "I hate you, I like you" moments and you start wondering if they are bipolar. It gets so tiring that after a point, I didn't care whether they ended up together or not.

'Love Action Drama' film review: An elegant but bland romantic comedy

Nivin Pauly and Nayanthara in Love Action Drama.

For a film that’s supposed to be about the romance between a man Dinesh (Nivin Pauly) and a woman, Shobha (Nayanthara), you get to see the man spending more time with his buddy Sagar (Aju Varghese) than he does with his woman.

Obviously, the chemistry between Dinesh and Sagar is much better. At one point, two female characters catch Dinesh and Sagar in an awkward moment, and you can’t blame them for suspecting that there is something going on between the two.

The biggest problem with Love Action Drama is that it tries to sell you the love story of the main couple unconvincingly.

It’s supposedly a romantic comedy but, as I said earlier, there is more bromance here than actual romance. How is it a romantic comedy if the film isn’t interested in having Dinesh and Shobha spend enough time together?

Yes, they do meet and chat occasionally but those moments are few and far between.

There are hardly two or three scenes where you see Dinesh and Shobha together. The rest of the time, you see them communicating through texts.

It’s possible that Dinesh and Shobha spend a lot of time ‘inside’ the film but if we aren’t made to feel the depth of their relationship, how are we supposed to take it seriously?

But that is not at all. Dinesh and Shobha are not compelling characters, to begin with. Now, I’m not saying that the characters have to be relatable for the film to be engaging.

There have been countless films made in the past with unrelatable protagonists but they still managed to hold our attention because the characters were well fleshed out.

It’s obvious that the goal of the film is only to entertain us and not be too intellectual. Even so, there has to be a certain degree of emotional conflict to get us invested in the drama.

WATCH TRAILER:

Dinesh agrees to be a teetotaler for her sake, but it’s hard to trust a guy who doesn’t have a strong grip on his urges.

Why should we believe that he is going to change as soon as he gets married? There are several moments in the film where the couple goes through “I hate you, I like you” moments and you start wondering if they are bipolar by any chance. It gets so tiring that after a point I didn’t care whether they ended up together or not.

Love Action Drama movie review: Dhyan hits bullseye

love action drama movie review

Director: Dhyan Sreenivasan Cast: Nivin Pauly, Aju Varghese, Nayantara, Sreenivasan, Vineeth Sreenivasan

When it comes to movies and people, we’re very familiar with chemistry. Generally used to describe a certain quality of relationship between characters, or off-screen talent, chemistry is a neat little word that we often use without a second thought. It is a wonderful force that is so hard to properly describe, but that can make or break the film. The ‘bromance’ of Nivin Pauly-Vineeth Sreenivasan-Aju Varghese was a wonderful force that resulted in a few hits in Mollywood. Love Action Drama shows why it has prevailed almost a decade as a favourite combo for many movie-goers. Through LAD, Dhyan, the younger brother of Vineeth Sreenivasan, adds his name in that combo, and we may see more from them.

In this Dhyan Sreenivasan directorial, Dinesh (Nivin Pauly), a wealthy young man who gets rejected by his childhood lover, finds his true love in Shobha (Nayantara), a Malayali girl brought up in Chennai. But before winning her heart, Dinesh has to change his sluggish way of living and quit two addictions, smoking and heavy drinking. Will he succeed in doing that? Will his friend Sagar (Aju Varghese) be able to help him? Nivin Pauly, who has had a slow start to the year with mediocre movies like Mikhael, makes a big leap forward with this rom-com. After the success of Oru Vadakkan Selfie, fans of Nivin Pauly’s comedy roles didn’t have much to celebrate. To an extent, LAD can satisfy them and seeing the usual suspects of Nivin-Aju-Vineeth in one frame would be huge for them. The film’s storyline is pretty simple and at times predictable, but altogether they could bring back the good old slapstick comedy successfully. And funny one-liners from Aju, like in Malarvadi Arts Club, Thattathin Marayathu and in Oru Vadakkan Selfie, make a comeback in this movie.

Dhyan’s direction is above average and the film hardly offers any boring or dead sequence. Nayantara’s ethereal grace and suave acting in these types of rom-coms is a treat as always. Vineeth Sreenivasan, Sreenivasan, Renji Panicker and Mallika Sukumaran prove to be a well-balanced cast with their performances.

Delicious visuals in Chennai and decent music make it a worthy one-time watch.

Film Review: Love Action Drama—Misogyny Made Into A Movie

Featured Image

Through multiple columns and op-eds we have seen how the frontline media especially Indian cinema has disguised patriarchy in the form of entertainment. Malayalam cinema in particular has been one among the many frontrunners in making these ‘ made for man ’ movies. But with silver linings lately, Malayalam cinema is eyeing for a change with the advent of Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) and filmmakers like Shyam Pushkaran calling out the patriarchy in Malayalam cinema. Although late, the progress is coming from this southern state of India. Love Action Drama is a desperate attempt by debutant writer director Dhyan Sreenivasan to put an obstacle to this very progress. The Nivin Pauly-Nayanthara starrer is a two and a half hour long redundant attempt to normalise things that cannot be justified in any civilised society.

The movie fails in content at multiple fronts, with at times the plot even venturing into nauseating justifications of the rogue male lead. And yes, there are many other movies on the same note but this is in 2019 and that makes a huge difference.

Love Action Drama, 2019

Cast : Nivin Pauly and Nayanthara

Director : Dhyan Sreenivasan

Dinesh, played by Nivin Pauly portrays a slacker cum drunkard rich man whose only motive is to drink and go in search of love (read: stalking and toxic behaviour). The movie begins at the wedding of Dinesh’s cousin, Swati, who is portrayed a ‘ theppukaari ’ (a Malayalam word predominantly used in cinema to shame women who fall out of love with their male partners, of course there is no such shaming for men!) by Dinesh & co. for making a choice. Not just that he goes one step further to take revenge on her for doing it to him under the disguise of the comic act by Sagar, played by actor turned debutant producer of the film Aju Varghese .

The female lead, Sobha, played by Nayanthara is the most ironical of them all. Introduced in to the scene as a staunch feminist who advises her friends on maintaining feminism in their family lives, her character sketch is a complete let down. Beginning with Sagar addressing being a feminist as some kind of disease, the character of Sobha is no where around feminism and has been probably made to fit the narrative of the patriarchs in Malayalam cinema who have conveniently took an accused friendly stance in a rape attack against one of their colleagues. Dinesh who follows Sobha to Chennai finds friendship which later evolves into an up and down toxic relationship.

Beginning with Sagar addressing being a feminist as some kind of disease, the character of Sobha is no where around feminism and has been probably made to fit the narrative of the patriarchs in Malayalam cinema who have conveniently took an accused friendly stance in a rape attack against one of their colleagues.

It just takes a random guy on the street who asks Dinesh, “Is he with you now? ” to take the relationship in a downward spiral. The insecure male lead takes the route of stalking her and keeping a watch on whom she meets, all this with a song in the background to make it look okay or even as a lame joke. Although stalking is nothing new in Indian cinema but as I told you this is 2019, it’s time we grow up. A veiled attempt to upvote the medieval mindset that a woman’s past matters—it is out of this, that the idea of ‘ theppukaari ’ and slut shaming stem. And rather than calling him out, Sobha’s reaction was to get married to this guy. Like, seriously?

love action drama movie review

Not just that, another guy in a sinister plot (as portrayed with a weird serial killer like background score) to malign their marriage showcases his past with Sobha in photos. Once again here we go with Dinesh who pushes Sobha into all sorts of toxicity to which she can only cry. At times, he resorts to trash talking, slut shaming and stereotyping against women as a whole and Sobha in particular. Unwillingly, she snaps the relationship and at the end with all the justifications of the lead as being an innocent, insecure and possessive gentleman and all the turn of events resulting from it as being inadvertent! No Sobha not again! With some more tears and all these more than enough reasons for his self-proclaimed innocent deeds, Sobha once again accepts his proposal.

Love Action Drama is seemingly a direct attack on feminism, aligning with narrative that feminists are hypocrites and take everything lying.

This is messed up at multiple levels! The patriarchy did not bare it all as always is done under the guise of romantic songs, comical acts and scores. Love Action Drama is seemingly a direct attack on feminism, aligning with narrative that feminists are hypocrites and take everything lying. Far more the female lead is shown as some kind of a downtrodden far lesser soul who has to make the life of the male lead meaningful. Sobha even concedes that women need to be protected by men and you call this character a feminist!? This writer needs some serious schooling on what it is to be a feminist and what it means to be in a toxic relationship.

Bringing this character of Dinesh under the lens, it can be found that there is not much difference between the character played by Asif Ali (Govind Balakrishnan) in the movie Uyare , a Parvathy Thiruvothu (Pallavi) starrer. While Govind attacks Pallavi with acid, Dinesh pushes Sobha into a messed up toxic relationship. Uyare tells us how Pallavi takes Govind to court and her realisation of her potential, that she deserves much better shows a woman who lives by her choice, convictions and will not let someone else toy with her life.

Love Action Drama on the other hand, portrays a woman as a feminist, who does not even realise the level of toxicity her boyfriend is building upon her and finds it okay to take any trauma forced on her lying down under the garb of ‘ too much love ’. Normalising the narrative that women are lesser humans has been the motto of many movies, but this definitely has got to be one of the most dreaded one!

Love Action Drama is a 2019 romantic comedy film directed by Dhyan Sreenivasan and stars Nivin Pauly, Nayanthara, and Aju Varghese in the lead roles. Set in the scenic beauty of London and Kerala, this light-hearted entertainer follows the journey of a young man and his attempts to pursue the love of his life. The story revolves around Dineshan (Nivin Pauly), a carefree and commitment-phobic youngster who leads a happy-go-lucky life. Despite having completed his engineering degree, Dineshan has no aspirations or goals in life. He spends his time hanging out with his best friend Shobha (Aju Varghese) and cruising through life without any serious responsibilities.

Everything takes a turn when Shobha's cousin, Shobha (Nayanthara), comes to visit them. Shobha is a smart, independent, and ambitious woman who instantly captures Dineshan's attention. He falls in love with her at first sight, but the feeling seems to be unrequited. Determined to win her heart, Dineshan decides to change his ways and embark on a journey of self-discovery that will challenge his perception of love and relationships.

Love Action Drama beautifully blends elements of romance, comedy, and drama to narrate a relatable story of love in the modern age. With its fresh and witty dialogues, the film captures the essence of contemporary love dynamics, exploring the ever-evolving nature of relationships, commitment, and the influence of society on young individuals.

Nivin Pauly, known for his impeccable comic timing, delivers yet another brilliant performance as Dineshan. His charm and on-screen charisma make him the perfect fit for the character, effortlessly portraying the transition from a carefree young man to someone willing to go to great lengths for the woman he loves. Nayanthara, on the other hand, impresses as Shobha, bringing depth and grace to her character. Her charisma and elegance shine through, making her the perfect blend of strength and vulnerability.

The film also benefits from the sparkling chemistry between the lead actors. Nivin Pauly and Nayanthara's on-screen presence creates a palpable tension and undeniable chemistry that keeps the audience engaged throughout the narrative. Their natural performances further strengthen the believability of the love story portrayed on screen.

Aju Varghese, in the supporting role of Shobha's cousin, adds a layer of humor and lightheartedness to the story. His witty one-liners and comedic timing provide the much-needed comic relief, ensuring the film doesn't take itself too seriously.

Love Action Drama is enhanced by its picturesque locations. The stunning visuals of London and the breathtaking landscapes of Kerala amplify the emotional journey of the characters, further immersing the audience in the story. The film's cinematography beautifully captures the vibrant colors and the contrasting moods of the two settings, adding depth to the narrative.

The music, composed by Shaan Rahman, perfectly complements the feel-good vibe of the film. The songs are catchy and well-placed, enhancing the emotions of the characters and aiding in the storytelling process. The peppy background score brings liveliness to the film, enhancing the overall viewing experience.

Overall, Love Action Drama is a delightful and entertaining romantic comedy that explores the complexities of love, commitment, and personal growth. With its talented ensemble cast, smart writing, and beautiful cinematography, the film strikes a balance between humor and emotion. It is a perfect blend of light-hearted entertainment and meaningful storytelling, making it an enjoyable watch for all.

Watch a tense romantic triangle play out on the tennis court in 'Challengers'

Justin Chang

love action drama movie review

Art (Mike Faist), Tashi (Zendaya) and Patrick (Josh O'Connor) are embroiled in a love triangle in Challengers . Metro Goldwyn Mayer Pictures hide caption

Art (Mike Faist), Tashi (Zendaya) and Patrick (Josh O'Connor) are embroiled in a love triangle in Challengers .

As much as I liked his Suspiria remake and his cannibal thriller Bones and All , it's nice to see the Italian director Luca Guadagnino make a movie that doesn't end with buckets of blood. His new sports movie, Challengers , instead comes drenched in buckets of sweat, and it's the most purely entertaining thing he's made in years. It gives us a romantic triangle set in the world of tennis, and it stars three superb actors in roles that are as athletically demanding as they are emotionally rich.

It begins on a tennis court in New Rochelle, a town just north of New York City, the site of a prestigious second-tier competition known as a Challenger tournament. On one side of the net is Art Donaldson, played by Mike Faist. Art has won three of the four Grand Slam events but has now hit a bit of a slump. He's squaring off against his former best friend, Patrick Zweig, played by Josh O'Connor. Patrick hasn't had as illustrious a career as Art, but he may well be the more gifted player.

You know it when you see it: Here are some movies that got sex scenes right

Pop Culture Happy Hour

You know it when you see it: here are some movies that got sex scenes right.

Watching them anxiously from the stands is Art's wife and coach, Tashi Duncan, played by Zendaya. It's clear that these three characters have some complicated history, which Guadagnino and the screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes proceed to unravel through a dizzying array of flashbacks.

And so we jump back 13 years to when Art and Patrick are buddies and doubles partners. Around this time they meet Tashi, a terrific tennis player who's about to begin her first year at Stanford. The boys begin a friendly competition for Tashi's affections, which the more confident Patrick initially wins. But after various ups and downs, including a twist that derails Tashi's tennis career, she winds up marrying Art and becoming his coach. Now, years later, this fateful Challenger tournament has brought the estranged Art and Patrick face-to-face once more. It's here that Patrick privately confronts Tashi and makes a startling proposition, asking her to be his coach.

The Zendaya-led 'Challengers' is much more than a sexy tennis movie

The Zendaya-led 'Challengers' is much more than a sexy tennis movie

Even when all the toggling between past and present gets a little repetitive, Challengers throws off an unstoppable energy. In the tennis scenes, the camera seems to be everywhere at once, and a hypnotic techno score, by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross , pulses and surges beneath the action. And like Guadagnino's Call Me by Your Name , Challengers has a forthright sensuality that reminds you how sexually timid most mainstream American movies are by comparison.

There isn't all that much sex in the film, but there's so much erotic tension and atmosphere that it doesn't matter. Guadagnino is a master of the tease — and so, it turns out, is Tashi. In one early, flirty scene with the three of them, Tashi not only maintains the upper hand, but also reveals that these two dudes might be more attracted to each other than they let on. As the years pass, though, their youthful desire for Tashi gives way to a deeper need.

In Teen Drama 'We Are Who We Are,' We're Still Figuring Out Who We Are

As Art, Faist shows as much live-wire physicality here as he did in the West Side Story remake, though his performance becomes more melancholy over time as Art faces his limitations. O'Connor, by contrast, is all swagger as Patrick, forever leading with his devilishly charming smile. And then there's Zendaya, who's so brilliant in her early tennis scenes that I wish Tashi hadn't been sidelined and forced into playing the role of mentor and muse to two men. But as in the recent Dune: Part Two , Zendaya keeps you watching with her mix of fierce intelligence and emotional uncertainty — over who will win the match, and what it might mean for her future.

Will Tashi stick with Art, the safe, skillful player who may not have the gumption to be one of the all-time greats? Or will she return to Patrick, the superior but more volatile talent? The movie resolves this quandary in a grand finale that's at once thrilling and maddening in the way it pushes this triangle and this tennis match to the breaking point. But by then, you can't blame Guadagnino for loving his characters so passionately, or feeling so reluctant to let them go. If it were up to him, the game would never end.

Marija Kavtaradze and her two leads, Kęstutis Cicėnas and Greta Grinevičiūtė, craft a beautifully choreographed study in coupled intimacy.

Slow - Variety Critic's Pick

Romantic dramas — and romantic comedies, for that matter — hinge on the conviction that when we find “the one” we will be all the more malleable for it. It’s not so much that we will change who we are but that who we will become alongside our lover will be a better version of who we are without them. In Marija Kavtaradze ’s intimate and touching “ Slow ,” a budding couple put such a belief to the test, sketching out the challenges of what it means to balance the selfishness and selflessness that’s required when being in a committed relationship.

Popular on Variety

As “Slow” unfolds, Kavtaradze’s script takes you through the requisite challenges Elena and Dovydas face as they try to build a life together — one that, as Dovydas reminds Elena, necessarily has to make room for his sexual preferences, or lack thereof. At times that feels incredibly easy, like when she sees how thoughtful and caring he can be on any given day, his mere touch (like when they hold hands for the first time) making her feel whole — wanted, even, though not in the way she’s used to. At others, their rather sexless relationship feels incredibly hard, with Dovydas constantly feeling like he needs to either apologize for his lack of sexual interest in her or wildly compensate in order to satiate her needs. That back and forth, a dance in and around intimacy, structures much of “Slow” which, in the end, is a heartbreaking study of what it means to try and meet your partner where they’re at all while demanding they do the same for you.

Playing with the genre trappings of a modern-day romance, “Slow” demands we assess what those familiar beats reveal about how it is we understand such seemingly self-evident concepts like “love,” “desire” and “commitment.” It helps that with a dancer on one end and a sign language interpreter on the other, Kavtaradze’s film benefits from being rooted in a sensual rather than a sexual world. The writer-director gets her actors to embody moments of closeness that cannot be collapsed into lust, nor conceived as mere preamble for something else. Indeed, those dance numbers Elena is choreographing with her colleagues and those love songs Dovydas ends up interpreting on camera work as fitting interludes that further stress how in tune this couple is with their own bodies, and yet how their joint intimate language proves hard nevertheless to harness and make sense of.

Theirs is a love story that touches on well-worn tropes (about jealousy, commitment and the like) and yet they’re made to feel quite new. Neither dryly didactic nor neutered when it comes to its depiction of asexuality, “Slow” reveals itself to be quite a tender portrait of love and companionship, of what our bodies yearn and want in others, and how we could do well to upend the stories we tell each other about living and loving another.

The 31 Best Love Triangle Movies to Watch After Challengers

I n honor of Zendaya ’s new film Challengers, which focuses on the intersecting love lives of three tennis players, we are taking a look at the best love triangles in movie history. The 31 films included on this list span decades, genres, and romantic machinations that may end up convincing you that, when it comes to love, three is a crowd. (There’s even one four-way love square, which is the most tragic romance on this list by far.)

The greatest love triangles include a martial arts epic in which two men become rivals for a woman’s heart and a Nicholas Sparks -inspired melodrama. John Hughes created an unrequited love triumvirate for the teen set, while basketball becomes the third wheel in Gina Prince-Bythewood ’s full length directorial debut.

From a romantic comedy that casts Julia Roberts as the villain to a pair of Mike Nichols' films with troubled romances and a notable soundtrack, below are the best love triangles that Hollywood has to offer.

The Notebook (2004)

In the 1940s-set The Notebook , Allie (Rachel McAdams) must choose between her fiancé Lon (James Marsden), a caring and gentle World War II veteran who she helped nurse back to health, or her first love Noah (Ryan Gosling), a hotheaded carpenter who drives her nuts, but forces her outside her comfort zone. What makes the romance, based on the Nicholas Sparks novel of the same name, so compelling is that even those who are happy to see her end up with Noah can’t help but hope that Lon finds his own happily ever after.

Broadcast News (1987)

The blonde-haired blue-eyed Tom (William Hurt) is a born on-air personality , while Aaron (Albert Brooks) is not quite safe (and far too sweaty ) for TV. Despite their professional differences, both men are competing for the affections of the same woman: a skilled but sometimes severe news producer, Jane (Holly Hunter). The ending of Broadcast News, which feels rather ahead of its time, shows that there are far more than two choices when it comes to both the news business and matters of the heart.

The Graduate (1967)

The Graduate begins with the seduction of recent college grad Benjamin (Dustin Hoffman) by Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), the wife of his father’s law partner who is at least 20 years his senior. (In real life, the 35-year-old Bancroft was only six years older than her co-star.) The Mike Nichols comedy is all fun and late night liaisons, until Benjamin finds himself falling for her more age appropriate daughter, Elaine (Katharine Ross), much to Mrs. Robinson’s chagrin. The film’s memorable final shot will leave you wondering whether Benjamin’s wedding interruption was about love or revenge.

Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)

In the Pride and Prejudice -inspired Bridget Jones’s Diary, perpetual singleton Bridget Jones ( Renée Zellweger ) finds herself caught between her womanizing boss, the Mr. Wickham-esque Daniel (Hugh Grant at his absolute smarmiest) and the reindeer jumper-wearing barrister Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), who, as his name suggests, is as hard to read as Jane Austen’s romantic hero (whom the actor once played to much acclaim ). It’s only after getting to know each of them better (and trudging through the snow in her tiny knickers ) that Bridget realizes, just like Elizabeth Bennet, she is meant to be with Mr. Darcy.

Casablanca (1942)

Casablanca might have the most iconic love triangle in cinematic history. Amid World War II, exiled former American freedom fighter Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) has built a life for himself in the titular Moroccan city, far away from Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), the woman who abandoned him years earlier. But when she unwittingly walks into his gin joint with her husband, Czech resistance leader Victor Lazlo (Paul Henreid), looking for a way to escape the Nazis, it’s clear things aren’t quite over between them. Yet Rick knows that the only way to save her is to let her go. They may not have a future together, but they’ll always have Paris —and for him, that has to be enough.

The Age of Innocence (1993)

Grab all of the tissues, you’re going to need them for the Martin Scorsese -directed Gilded Age weepie based on Edith Wharton’s 1920 novel of the same name. In 1870s New York, Daniel Day Lewis’ chivalrous lawyer Newland Archer is set to marry a respectable woman, the sweet and virtuous May Weiland (Winona Ryder). But he soon finds himself falling in love with May’s cousin, Countess Ellen Olenska (Michelle Pfeiffer), who has been ostracized by the city’s elite following her separation from her husband. Age of Innocence is a beautiful tragedy of manners that questions whether it is better to follow one’s own heart or the rules set by polite society.

The Philadelphia Story (1940)

If you were Katharine Hepburn , who would you rather marry: Cary Grant or Jimmy Stewart? It’s the question at the heart of the classic romantic comedy The Philadelphia Story. Wealthy socialite Tracy Lord (Hepburn) is on the brink of walking down the aisle with fellow aristocrat George Kittredge (John Howard). Their wedding is the talk of the town, which is how her ex-husband, yacht designer-turned-journalist C.K. Dexter Haven (Grant), and his photographer Mike Connor (Stewart), end up at her home to cover the star-studded affair. It’s in the days before saying “I do” that Tracy begins to rethink the choices she’s made to please her family. In the end, Tracy leaves George at the altar for another guy who she believes will give her the life she’s always wanted.

House of Flying Daggers (2004)

House of Flying Daggers is an exhilarating martial arts film about love and betrayal. Set in 859 AD during the dying days of China’s Tang Dynasty, undercover cop Jin (Takeshi Kaneshiro) arrests Mei (Ziya Zhang), a blind dancer whom he suspects of being the daughter of the leader of the underground rebel group that shares the film’s name. With the help of fellow cop Leo (Andy Lau), Jin works to land a confession from Mei, but amid the investigation, both men find themselves falling for her. The Zhang Yimou film ends with the three battling it out to the death in an action sequence for the ages; a poetic end to a love story destined to end tragically.

Jules and Jim (1962)

The complex love triangle at the center of François Truffaut ’s landmark French New Wave film is between two best friends, Jules (Oskar Werner) and Jim (Henri Serre), and the young woman, Catherine (Jeanne Moreau), they both love. Jules and Jim is often credited with creating the manic-pixie-dream-girl trope before we had a term for it. But many, including movie critic Roger Ebert , argue that the film isn’t about Jules and Jim’s quest to win the freewheeling Catherine’s heart. It’s about her long, hard journey into adulthood; a reading that makes the ending of this trilateral romance all the more bittersweet.

The Half of It (2020)

In Netflix’s The Half of It , high school football star Paul Munsky (Daniel Diemer) is crushing on popular girl Aster Flores (Alexxis Lemireso) so he enlists the shy, but shrewd Ellie Chu (Leah Lewis) to write her a love letter for him. The only problem is: Ellie has a thing for Aster, too, in this Cyrano de Bergerac -inspired teen rom-com with a queer twist that's a welcome addition to the love triangle canon.

Sabrina (1954)

Two wealthy brothers, played by Humphrey Bogart and William Holden, find themselves competing for the same girl: the titular character played by Audrey Hepburn . The two men, who couldn’t be more different, have known Sabrina all their lives; she’s the daughter of their chauffeur. But it isn’t until after she returns from Paris—looking more sophisticated than ever—that they give her a second glance. Now, she must figure out if either one of these guys really loves her for who she is or if she’s just a trophy to be won.

The Hunger Games (2012)

No offense to the Twihards , but Twilight 's Bella, Edward, and Jacob have nothing on Katniss and her guys, Peeta and Gale. Throughout The Hunger Games series, Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) finds herself drawn to fellow tribute Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), who poses as her fake boyfriend in hopes that it will help them survive the death tournament. But their fake romance doesn’t sit well with Katniss’ District 12 bestie Gale (Liam Hemsworth), who secretly harbors feelings for her. No matter what team you’re on, The Hunger Games offers a compelling battle for Katniss’ heart and soul.

The Apartment (1960)

A pencil pusher at an insurance agency (Jack Lemmon) finds himself falling for his office’s sweet elevator operator (Shirley MacLaine). Unfortunately, she’s also the mistress of his two-timing boss (Fred MacMurray) in Billy Wilder’s heartfelt comedy about the struggle to find the kind of love one deserves.

While You Were Sleeping (1995)

The love triangle in While You Were Sleeping is between a man, a woman, and a man in a coma who doesn’t actually know he’s part of this romantic triumvirate. After lonely Chicago transit token collector Lucy (Sandra Bullock) saves her longtime secret crush Peter (Peter Gallagher) from being hit by a train, she is falsely identified as his fiancée. Peter’s estranged family quickly adopts her and she can’t help but fall in love with them. Specifically, Peter’s brother Jack (Bill Pullman), who is at first suspicious of Lucy, but soon finds himself captivated by his brother’s soon-to-be fake wife. Hilarity definitely ensues in this zany rom-com.

Y Tu Mamá También (2001)

Alfonso Cuarón’s Y Tu Mamá También is a sexy hormone-fueled road trip movie set in the Oscar-winning director’s home country of Mexico in which two teenage friends, played by Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna , find themselves falling for their travel companion, a married woman in her late 20s (Maribel Verdú). Possibly at the expense of their lifelong friendship.

Brooklyn (2015)

Eilis (Saoirse Ronan) is torn throughout Brooklyn. Not just between two countries—her motherland of Ireland, or her newly adopted home of New York City—but between the two men who exemplify the best of both those worlds. Soon after moving to Brooklyn, she meets Tony (Emory Cohen), a nice Italian plumber who wants to build a life with her, but when a tragedy forces her to go back home, she finds herself getting close to Jim (Domhnall Gleeson), a fellow Irishman who hopes he can give her a reason to stay. The charming romantic drama based on Irish author Colm Toibin’s 2009 novel of the same name offers a thoughtful look at what it really means to put down roots with someone.

The Piano (1993)

In Jane Campion ’s feminist classic The Piano , talented pianist and mute Ada (Holly Hunter) finds herself at the center of an odd love triangle. Set in the mid-1800s, Scotswoman Ada has been sold into a marriage with Alisdair Stewart (Sam Neill), a New Zealand frontiersman who is aloof to her needs and wants. But when Alisdair’s right-hand man George (Harvey Keitel) enlists Ada to teach him to play piano she is finally able to find pleasure outside of her music. But it may be at her own peril.

The Dark Knight (2008)

Most superhero movies are action-packed, but light on romance. Not The Dark Knight , which uses its love triangle of Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale), his childhood sweetheart, assistant District Attorney Rachel (Maggie Gyllenhaal), and her new romantic partner, Gotham’s new D.A. Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) as the Christopher Nolan film’s major turning point. Losing Rachel at the hands of the Joker (Heath Ledger), sends each of these heroic men on diverging paths looking for vengeance. Neither finds salvation, only more destruction.

The Favourite (2018)

At first glance, the love triangle in Yorgos Lanthimos’ 18th century dark comedy The Favourite appears to be one of pure convenience. Both Lady Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough (Rachel Weisz) and her cousin, Abigail (Emma Stone) are battling for the affections of England’s Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) in hopes of earning power over her court. But as the film goes on, it’s clear that not everyone is faking their lustful feelings for the depressed ruler, which makes the final shot of The Favourite feel even bleaker.

Reality Bites (1994)

Budding filmmaker Lelaina Pierce (Winona Ryder) has a thing for her friend, former convenience store clerk and scruffy grammar savant Troy Dyer ( Ethan Hawke ). But it isn’t until she takes up with Michael, an executive at an MTV-like network played by the film’s director Ben Stiller, that Troy makes his feelings for her known in the worst way possible. Reality Bites perfectly encapsulates the angst of falling in love with someone you shouldn’t be falling in love with. But to be fair, who would really turn down a chance to get with Ethan Hawke in the ‘90s ?

Something’s Gotta Give (2003)

Would you break up with a handsome, attentive younger doctor (played by Keanu Reeves) to be with a charming sexagenarian socialite who previously dated your daughter (Jack Nicholson)? That’s the predicament Diane Keaton’s character, playwright Erica Barry, finds herself in with Nancy Meyers ’ mature rom-com that shows you’re never too old to find love.

Your Sister’s Sister (2011)

After the death of his brother, Jack (Mark Duplass) needs a break, so his best friend Iris (Emily Blunt) sends him to her father’s cabin in the woods. It’s there he meets her sister Hannah (Rosemarie DeWitt), who has set up camp there after a breakup. The two make for easy drinking buddies and bedmates. But when Iris arrives with plans to tell Jack that she’s in love with him is when things get really complicated in Lynn Shelton’s tender drama. Like, possibly stealing someone’s sperm kind of complicated.

Bound (1996)

Three years before they created The Matrix , the Wachowskis made Bound, a lesbian heist movie in which the deadly eternal triangle at the center of it—a violent gangster (Joe Pantoliano), his conniving girlfriend (Jennifer Tilly), and an ex-con (Gina Gershon)—must work together to steal from the mafia. But can these three really be trusted? In this modern edge-of-your-seat noir, all’s fair in love and gang war.

Love & Basketball (2000)

The hoopers at the center of Love & Basketball , Quincy (Omar Epps) and Monica (Sanaa Lathan), fall in and out of love throughout their lives . And while the climax of the sports drama has Monica balling to keep Quincy from marrying another woman, the real love triangle at the center of the movie is between those two and basketball, the shared passion that risks tearing them apart.

Pretty In Pink (1986)

In the John Hughes classic Pretty in Pink , Molly Ringwald plays Andie, a stylish teen from the wrong side of the tracks who falls for classmate Blaine (Andrew McCarthy), a (mostly) goodhearted yuppie who finds himself enamored with her despite the objections of his caddish best friend ( James Spader , giving a masterful performance). But Blaine’s not the only guy in love with Andie; her sweet, but awkward bestie Duckie (Jon Cryer) is too shy to tell her how he really feels. (Though lip synching for his life to Otis Redding’s “Try a Little Tenderness” should have been a clear giveaway.) But there’s an awkward truth about this teen love triangle: Andie doesn’t seem as torn between the two as so many in the audience are. #JusticeForDuckie .

Past Lives (2023)

Celine Song ’s poignant romance Past Lives spans 24 years, two continents, and two great loves. As a tween growing up in South Korea, Nora ( Greta Lee ) dreamed of marrying her best friend Hae Sung (Teo Yoo). In reality, she ends up with Arthur (John Magaro), a budding author she meets at a writing retreat in Montauk. Seven years into her marriage, Hae Sung comes to visit her in New York and she finds herself wondering what could have been.

Blood Simple (1984)

The Coen Brothers debut feature is a nasty thriller in which a husband (played by Dan Hedaya) sets out to kill his wife (Frances McDormand in her movie debut) for taking up with another man, who also happens to be his employee (John Getz). Blood Simple is a twisty noir that will keep you guessing on where each of the members of this devilish triangle’s allegiances lie until the very bloody end.

My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)

When Jules (Julia Roberts) finds out her best friend Michael (Dermot Mulroney)—with whom she had a longstanding pact that they would get married if they were both single at 28—is engaged to a younger woman (Cameron Diaz), she sets out to win him back by any means necessary. By the end of My Best Friend’s Wedding, you may find yourself asking: is Jules part of a love triangle or just delusional? Casting Roberts as the possible villain makes this one of the genre’s best.

The Worst Person in the World (2021)

Despite what the Norwegian film’s title might imply, protagonist Julie ( Renate Reinsve ) is not the worst person in the world. Heck, she’s not even the worst person in this movie. Instead, she is a lost twenty something woman trying to figure out whether she wants to be with a curmudgeonly cartoonist 15 years her senior (Anders Danielsen Lie) or a laidback barista (Herbert Nordrum). Or, maybe, perhaps find a third option that will make her even happier.

Closer (2004)

It can be hard to look away from the car crash that is Closer ’s ever changing love square: Dan (Jude Law) loves Alice (Natalie Portman), but cheats on her with Anna (Julia Roberts), who is married to Larry (Clive Owen), who plans to seduce Alice out of revenge. So why then would you do it? Because there’s something heartbreakingly therapeutic about watching this foursome try to come to terms with their own infidelities in director Mike Nichols’ penultimate film.

Gone With the Wind (1939)

Frankly, you might not give a damn about Gone With the Wind, but the controversial Hollywood classic has one of the most compelling love triangles ever put to screen. Set during the American Civil War, Southern belle Scarlett O’Hara (Vivien Leigh) spends a decade obsessing over Ashley Wilkes (Leslie Howard), the film’s most tragic character, while spurning the advances of Rhett Butler (Clark Gable), a strikingly handsome soldier who is both her knight in shining armor and her greatest antagonist. All of this makes for a tormented love story with an ending that is still as explosive as it was 90 years ago.

Movie Review: Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt are great fun in ‘The Fall Guy’

One of the worst movie sins is when a comedy fails to at least match the natural charisma of its stars. Not all actors are capable of being effortlessly witty without a tightly crafted script and some excellent direction and editing. But Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt seem, at least from afar, adept at that game. Just look at their charming press tour for “The Fall Guy.” Theirs is the kind of fun banter that can be a little worrisome — what if their riffing is better than the movie?

It comes as a great relief, then, that “The Fall Guy” lives up to its promise. Here is a delightful blend of action, comedy and romance that will make the audience feel like a Hollywood insider for a few hours (although there are perhaps one too many jokes about Comic-Con and Hall H).

Loosely based on the 1980s Lee Majors television series about a stuntman who made some extra cash on the side bounty hunting, Gosling takes up the mantle of said stunt guy, Colt Seavers.

Colt is a workaday stunt performer and longtime go-to for a major movie star, Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). Tom is the kind of deeply egotistical and self-conscious A-lister who tells everyone he does his own stunts and worries out loud about Colt’s jawline being distractingly softer than his. I think the word “potato” is thrown around as a descriptor. Taylor-Johnson has quite a bit of fun playing up all his eccentricities that you hope, and fear, are at least somewhat inspired by real horror stories of stars behaving badly.

The film comes from director David Leitch, the Brad Pitt stuntman and stunt coordinator who helped bring “John Wick” to the world and directed “Atomic Blonde” and “Bullet Train.” He’s a guy who not only has the vision and know-how to bring the best in stunts to films and make them pop, but also has a vested interest in putting them in the spotlight. Forget the Oscar, how about just any acknowledgement? Perhaps “The Fall Guy” is just one tiny step on the path to making audiences more aware of some of the behind-the-scenes people who really make movies better and risk it all to do so.

It’s revealing that the movie starts with Colt suffering a terrible injury on a set. The stunt that goes wrong is one he’s just done and doesn’t seem remotely nervous about. The film cuts to his recovery and semi-reclusive retirement until he gets a call from Tom’s producer Gail (a delightfully over-the-top Hannah Waddingham) begging Colt to come back for a new film. They need him, she pleads, as does his longtime crush Jody (Blunt), who is making her directorial debut. She waits to inform him that Tom is missing and he’s the one who has to find him. On the quest, Colt encounters tough-guy goons, enablers, a sword-wielding actress, and a dead body on ice that all lead up to something big and rotten. And like a selfless stunt guy, he does it all out of sight of Jody — trying his best to save her movie without giving her something extra to worry about. Nothing about it is particularly plausible, but it’s not hard to get on board for the ride, and much of that is because of Gosling.

While he’s not quite underappreciated for his comedic timing, especially after “Barbie,” it’s fun to get to see him really embrace and lean into the goofiness — whether it’s crying and singing along to Taylor Swift’s “All Too Well” or quoting movie lines to his stunt coordinator pal (Winston Duke, always a good addition) in the midst of an actual fight.

There is something very juvenile and sweet about Jody and Colt’s will-they-won’t-they romance, with its mix of attraction, banter, misunderstandings and hurt feelings. It was a genius stroke to cast these two opposite each other and it leaves you wanting more scenes with the two.

Working with a script from Drew Pearce (“Hobbs & Shaw”), Leitch packs the film with wall-to-wall action, in both the film’s movie sets and its real world. And with the self-referential humor, the industry jokes and the promise of a little romance, it feels like one of those movies we all complain they don’t make anymore.

“The Fall Guy,” a Universal Picture release in theaters Friday, is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “action and violence, drug content and some strong language.” Running time: 126 minutes. Three stars out of four.

Critics are calling Luca Guadagnino's sexy tennis drama 'Challengers' the 'horniest movie of the year'

  • The reviews for Luca Guadagnino's new movie "Challengers" are in.
  • The drama about a former tennis prodigy caught in a love triangle has a 92% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.
  • Critics say the film is stylish, the performances are gripping, and the score is exhilarating.

Insider Today

Luca Guadagnino's latest film " Challengers " has finally arrived — and critics can't get enough of the sexy tennis drama.

The movie stars Zendaya as Tashi Duncan, a tennis prodigy who becomes a coach after a severe on-court injury forces her to abandon her dream of going pro. Tashi's past and present collide years later at a lower-tier challenger tournament leading up to the US Open , where her husband, Art Donaldson (Mike Faist), and her ex-boyfriend, Patrick Zweig (Josh O'Connor) — who are also former best friends and doubles partners— compete against each other.

At the time of this article's publication, "Challengers" has a critics score of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes , with people praising Guadagnino's direction, Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor's pulsating score , and the mesmerizing performances of the main trio of actors. Here's a rundown of the reviews.

Director Luca Guadagnino films the tennis sequences in stylish and inventive ways, aided by cinematographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom.

love action drama movie review

"The tennis is shot with formidable emotional urgency." — Clarisse Loughrey, The Independent

"Guadagnino, for his part, treats what could be a visually straightforward relationship/sports drama as a laboratory, where he tinkers with unlikely ways to communicate action and emotion on screen. — Tasha Robinson, Polygon

"Cinematographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom's nimble shooting style brings excitement to the matches, inventively switching up the angles to bolster the energy. And the intoxication of his camera with the leads' physicality is entirely contagious." — David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter

"Guadagnino frames his three actors in many close-ups and medium shots where their eyes and the way they ogle each other tell the story. In return, Sayombhu Mukdeeprom's camera ogles the actors' bodies, capturing every flicker of light in their eyes, every trembling lip and sweaty brow. All of this makes for a movie high on sexual heat, something not seen much in contemporary American cinema." — Murtada Elfadl, AV Club

Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O'Connor deliver undeniable chemistry and star-making performances.

love action drama movie review

"Like seeing a well-balanced team dominate in triples, the film is a true three-hander, with everyone performing at the top of their game." — Rocco T. Thompson, Slant magazine

"That script is a terrific three-course meal for Faist and O'Connor. They get to trade off face and heel roles from scene to scene and era to era, as Art and Patrick help and hurt each other in equal measure. But it's an absolute smorgasbord for Zendaya, who even in starring roles has never been given this much room to stretch." — Tasha Robinson, Polygon

"All three lead actors carry themselves like movie stars." — Matt Zoller Seitz, RogerEbert.com

"Zendaya, O'Connor, and Faist play off each other charmingly, particularly in the flashbacks when their characters are younger. Those scenes are lively and jocular and the three actors bring into them combustible chemistry." — Murtada Elfadl, AV Club

"Zendaya is the linchpin. Her work here, on the heels of 'Dune: Part Two,' cements her status as a born Movie Star. She moves with the decisive ferocity of a warrior on the court and the floating grace of a ballerina elsewhere." — David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter

"The trio of actors all share a crackling chemistry, but the electricity between O'Connor and Faist is strongest. Both men engage in passionate scenes with Zendaya, making out in intense close-ups and tearing clothes off with palpable want. But none of those more physical scenes sear with the level of heat that O'Connor and Faist create with a mere shared glance." — Maureen Lee Lenker, Entertainment Weekly

Justin Kuritzkes' screenplay vacillates between different time periods, mirroring the back-and-forth nature of tennis.

love action drama movie review

"Justin Kuritzkes's twisty script leaves us guessing as the trio's mind games wreak havoc on each other and the audience all at once." — Maureen Lee Lenker, Entertainment Weekly

"What keeps the movie humming is the skill with which Kuritzkes' script draws out the complications in the trio's relationships." — David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter

"Constructed like a tennis competition, Justin Kuritzkes' screenplay ricochets back and forth through time, asking us to pivot our brains the way audiences do at the movie's opening challenger match." — Peter Debruge, Variety

"Kuritzkes' script nimbly leaps back and forth between their teens and 20s and the present, never missing a beat to put them — and us — through the emotional wringer. And as these three flirt, fumble, fuck, and break each others' hearts, 'Challenger's' tantalizes with its ambush of raw emotions and gnarled repressions." — Kristy Puchko, Mashable

Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor's rousing techno and electronica score drives the action forward, on and off the court.

love action drama movie review

"One of the best surprises turns out to be the soundtrack by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, a propulsive techno score that does a lot of the work to keep the tennis scenes moving." — Caryn James, BBC

"'Challengers's' simple conceit, thrillingly executed, is that every conversation is a tennis match, and every tennis match is a sex scene. The film's galvanizing score, by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, unifies both." — Clarisse Loughrey, The Independent

"Propelling the on-court action is Reznor and Ross's score, bringing a level of bombast to the sports action that at times threatens to overwhelm the action, without ever actually proving distracting." — Liz Shannon Miller, Consequence

"The electronic, staccato rhythm mimics the rapid back-and-forth of tennis while also catapulting us into a sound that is inherently sexy in the ways it evokes the hypnotic trance of a dance club." — Maureen Lee Lenker, Entertainment Weekly

There aren't any explicit sex scenes, but "Challengers" is still incredibly sexy.

love action drama movie review

"There are no explicit sex scenes or orgasms on screen, and yet this is the horniest movie of the year." — Mireia Mullor, Digital Spy

"The promotional materials for 'Challengers' make it out to be slightly more erotically charged than what we actually get on screen; there's certainly sexual content, but it's not as explicit as you'd expect, and it's all very rooted in these characters and their relationships..." — Liz Shannon Miller, Consequence

"Those hoping for a threesome throwdown might initially be disappointed here, as there is no literal group sex — neither on screen nor implied offscreen. However, using tennis as a metaphor, every grunt, groan, and drip of sweat (all of which are generously dispersed) has a sexual implication." — Kristy Puchko, Mashable

"There isn't an inch of nudity apart from some extras in the locker room showers, and yet Guadagnino shoots the climactic match with a stylistic vulgarity that suggests what sports might look like if Brazzers suddenly took over for ESPN." — David Ehrlich, IndieWire

"Challengers" is tantalizing and entertaining, regardless of how familiar you are with the rules of tennis.

love action drama movie review

"Moment by moment, line by line and scene by scene, 'Challengers' delivers sexiness and laughs, intrigue and resentment, and Guadagnino's signature is there in the intensity, the closeups and the music stabs." — Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

"Smart, seductive and bristling with sexual tension, 'Challengers' is arguably Luca Guadagnino's most purely pleasurable film to date; it's certainly his lightest and most playful." — David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter

"Behind every high-speed volley and smashed racket courses raw emotion, resulting in the steamiest (and funniest) sports-centric love triangle since 'Bull Durham.' With some romantic movies, you'd do well to pack tissues. In the case of 'Challengers,' bring a towel. It's that rare film where you'll work up a sweat just from spectating." — Peter Debruge, Variety

"Anchored by three arresting performances and playfully experimental direction, 'Challengers' is fresh, exhilarating, and energetic." — Maureen Lee Lenker, Entertainment Weekly

  1. Love Action Drama Movie Review by Vishal Menon

Love Action Drama even looks like one of them, but sadly has the soul of an M Rajesh film. In no recent Malayalam movie have I seen so many scenes, all fuelled by alcohol, devoted solely around the idea of female-bashing. It gets worse when even dollops of homophobia are thrown in this mix. The performances don't help either.

Love Action Drama is a romance in which it is impossible to figure out from start to finish why the central couple are into each other or whether they are into each other at all. They say they are in love so we are forced to believe it but the writing of the bond between them is sterile. The misplaced priorities in Dhyan's screenplay are entirely to blame.
