IELTS Essay, topic: Leisure time activities

  • IELTS Essays - Band 6

Some people think that it is important to use leisure time for activities that develop the mind, such as reading and doing crossword puzzles. Others feel that it is important to give one’s mind a rest in leisure time. Discuss.

leisure time essay ielts

Some people want to relax after their day of work. These people may prefer to relax by watching movies, reading or getting a massage. People who have a such as doctors, teachers and builders may choose these types of activities. If you are a doctor, you may feel that you want to let your body rest after work and you don’t want to do a five kilometer run after work, because you are already physically tired.

On the other hand, some people choose to be active in their leisure time because they do . For example, these people many spend all day sitting on a chair and their work. At the end of a working day, they a backache, and all of their body tired so they need to stretch their arms and improve their health by doing some activity such as going to the gym or swimming.

To sum up, the important thing is that people want to stay healthy by choosing what is best for them. In my view, the wrong way is to stay at home in your leisure time if you have a job.

This essay needs work. It has the right structure and covers the task. However there are many poorly structured sentences, many of the sentences are too simple and don’t have enough complexity, there are grammatical errors and some prepositions are use incorrectly (see comments underlined in blue). Overall, this looks like a Band 6 – 6.5 essay.

IELTS Writing Task 2 – Topic: LEISURE

ielts writing topics 2019

1.  Some people think that it is important to use leisure time for activities that improve the mind, such as reading and doing word puzzles. Other people feel that it is important to rest the mind during leisure time.

Sample Answer

It is generally accepted that we all need leisure time to recover from the stresses of  work and everyday life.  Personally, I prefer to be active during this time, as I think this suits me better. However,  what we do with our leisure time is up to us and no one can say that any particular  activity is the best.

Some people relax by watching movies, reading or surfing the internet. People who  have physically demanding jobs may choose these types of activities. If you are a nurse  or builder, you may feel that you don’t want to do a five-kilometre run after work,  because you are already physically tired.

Other people do very sedentary jobs. Computer analysts, for example, may spend all  day sitting in front of a computer screen. At the end of the working day, they may be  keen to stretch their limbs and improve their health by swimming or going to the gym.

Another factor that influences our choice of leisure pursuit is where we work. People  who work indoors often prefer outdoor hobbies, whereas for people who work outdoors,  the reverse may be true. I am a student myself and this involves a lot of sitting in  lectures, so I need to get out into the fresh air afterwards.

In any situation, the important thing is that people need to stay healthy by choosing  what is best for them. The only wrong way to spend free time, in my view, is to have a  sedentary job and then go home and watch television.

2.  Some people prefer to plan activities for their free time very carefully. Others choose not to make any plans at all for their free time. Compare the benefits of planning free-time activities with the benefits of not making plans. Which do you prefer – planning or not planning for your leisure time? Use specific reasons and examples to explain your choice.

Nowadays people have so many things to do that they almost always do not have  enough time for it. When we go to bed we carefully think and plan our next day and it  continues day in and day out. We wake up, recollect our checklist with things to do and  in a few minutes we are already in a car on our way to the office. Often people do not  have time for themselves. So, when people have some spare time they want to use it  wisely. Some people prefer to plan activities for their free time very carefully. However,  others prefer not to make any plans. In this essay I will analyze both cases and present my view in favor of planning free-time activities.

From the one side, not making any plans and just letting the time pass by for some time  have some benefits. First of all, a person can just relax, enjoy the beautiful moments,  spend his or her time with loved ones, watch a movie, listen to relaxing music, observe  the flowers in bloom from the window, contemplate about his or her life and just slow  down the pace of life. I think it is a very good way to eliminate one’s stress and tension  and just leave all troubles and worries behind.

From the other side, careful planning can bring many benefits too. First of all, one can  travel. However, traveling requires some planning to be made. For example, one most  likely will need a hotel room. So, the reservation should be made beforehand. Also, it is  wise to check one’s car to avoid breakdowns and have an uninterrupted worry-free trip.  Second of all, planning one’s activities allows to spend one’s free time the way he/she  likes. For instance, if I want to play tennis on incoming week-end I will certainly make a  reservation for a court because in this case I will not be disappointed with the waste of  my time. Personally, I prefer to make plans for my free time because it allows me to  spend my vacation or week-ends the way I want it.

To sum up, I think careful planning allows people to derive maximum benefits from their  free time. However, I must confess sometimes I allow my self just to stay at home with  my friends and family and not make any plans.

Passage: Leisure Time: A Global Perspective

In the mosaic of global cultures, leisure time represents a fascinating array of activities and meanings. Across different societies, leisure is not just a mere pastime but a reflection of deep-seated cultural values, historical evolution, and societal norms. This exploration into the realm of leisure reveals not just how people relax and unwind but also provides insights into their priorities, beliefs, and the impact of technological advancements on their lives.

Historically, leisure activities have been influenced by the geographical, economic, and social contexts of a society. In ancient civilizations, such as Greece and Rome, leisure was predominantly the privilege of the elite, often filled with intellectual pursuits, arts, and sports. These activities were not merely for enjoyment but also for cultivating a well-rounded persona, embodying the values of their culture. In contrast, for the working classes, leisure time was scarce, often limited to religious festivals and communal gatherings.

The industrial revolution marked a significant shift in the concept of leisure. As working hours became more regulated and the concept of the weekend emerged, leisure time became a more widespread phenomenon. This era saw the rise of public leisure facilities like parks, museums, and libraries, democratizing access to leisure and cultural activities.

Fast forward to the 21st century, and the landscape of leisure has transformed dramatically, largely due to the advent of digital technology. The internet, social media, and streaming services have introduced a new paradigm of leisure activities. In contemporary societies, leisure time is often synonymous with screen time, whether it's binge-watching a series, scrolling through social media, or engaging in video games.

Despite these technological advances, traditional forms of leisure, such as reading, sports, and arts, continue to thrive. These activities are not only forms of entertainment but also avenues for personal growth and health. Studies have shown that engaging in physical activities and hobbies during leisure time has a profound impact on mental and physical well-being, reducing stress and improving cognitive function.

The global perspective on leisure is incredibly diverse. In countries like Japan, leisure often involves communal activities such as attending festivals or dining out with friends. In contrast, in Scandinavian countries, there is a greater emphasis on outdoor activities and nature, reflecting their cultural affinity for the outdoors. This diversity highlights how leisure activities are shaped by cultural values and environmental contexts.

Leisure time also offers a window into generational shifts. While older generations may prefer more traditional forms of leisure, younger generations are more inclined towards digital and interactive forms of entertainment. This generational divide in leisure preferences is indicative of the broader societal changes and technological evolution.

Moreover, the way individuals choose to spend their leisure time can be a reflection of their personal identity and lifestyle. For some, leisure is an opportunity for self-improvement and learning, indulging in educational courses or fitness regimes. For others, it is about relaxation and escapism, perhaps through travel or consuming media.

The impact of leisure on societal health and productivity cannot be understated. Societies that value and facilitate leisure time for their citizens tend to have higher levels of happiness and productivity. This correlation underscores the importance of a balanced approach to work and leisure, challenging the notion that non-stop work leads to greater success.

In the future, the concept of leisure is likely to continue evolving. Emerging technologies like virtual reality and artificial intelligence promise to introduce new forms of leisure, further blurring the lines between reality and entertainment. The challenge will be to balance these advances with the human need for physical activity, social interaction, and connection with nature.

In conclusion, leisure time is a multifaceted concept that varies across cultures, generations, and individuals. It is a reflection of cultural values, societal norms, and

technological progress. Understanding these dynamics is crucial not only for personal well-being but also for grasping the broader societal context in which leisure activities occur. The way people around the world allocate and enjoy their leisure time is a rich subject, offering a mirror to the diversity of human experience and the evolving landscape of our global society.

From the tranquil tea ceremonies of Japan to the lively soccer matches in Brazil, the variety of leisure activities is as vast as the human imagination. These activities are not just forms of relaxation but are also imbued with cultural significance and communal values. In Japan, the tea ceremony is not merely about drinking tea but is a ritual that embodies respect, cleanliness, and harmony. Similarly, in Brazil, soccer is more than a game; it's a celebration of community, skill, and national pride.

The role of leisure in personal and societal development is also noteworthy. Engaging in leisure activities can foster creativity, resilience, and adaptability. For instance, engaging in artistic hobbies like painting or music can enhance creative thinking and emotional expression. Similarly, team sports can develop teamwork skills and resilience.

Leisure time also plays a critical role in family and community bonding. Shared leisure activities, whether they are family picnics, community concerts, or sports events, strengthen social bonds and foster a sense of belonging and community spirit. These activities provide a platform for intergenerational communication and cultural exchange, enriching community life.

Despite the universal presence of leisure, access to leisure activities can be influenced by socio-economic factors. In some parts of the world, access to leisure facilities or the luxury of free time is limited, reflecting broader socio-economic inequalities. Understanding and addressing these disparities is essential for ensuring that the benefits of leisure are accessible to all.

Environmental factors also play a role in shaping leisure activities. For instance, in countries with extensive natural landscapes, such as Canada or New Zealand, outdoor activities like hiking, skiing, or kayaking are popular. In urban settings, leisure tends to be more indoor-focused, with a higher emphasis on cultural activities such as theatre, cinema, and dining.

The future of leisure may see a more integrated approach, combining physical, social, and digital experiences. With the rise of smart cities and the Internet of Things, leisure activities could become more personalized and immersive, catering to individual preferences and needs.

In essence, leisure time is a complex and dynamic aspect of human life, intricately linked with cultural, social, economic, and technological factors. It is a vital component of a balanced life, offering opportunities for relaxation, personal growth, and social interaction. As the world continues to evolve, so too will the ways in which we understand and engage in leisure, reflecting the ever-changing tapestry of human life.

Essay#22 | Leisure Time for Activities

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task..

Write about the following topic:

Some people think that it is important to use leisure time for activities that improve the mind, such as reading and doing word puzzles. Other people feel that it is important to rest the mind during leisure time.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model answer.

If you are a nurse or builder, you may feel that you don’t want to do a five-kilometer run after work, because you are already physically tired.

Other people do very sedentary jobs. Computer analysts, for example, may spend all day sitting in front of a computer screen. At the end of the working day, they may be keen to stretch their limbs and improve their health by swimming or going to the gym.

Another factor that influences our choice of leisure pursuits is where we work. People who work indoors often prefer outdoor hobbies, whereas, for people who work outdoors, the reverse may be true. I am a student myself and this involves a lot of sitting in lectures, so I need to get out into the fresh air afterward.

In any situation, the important thing is that people need to stay healthy by choosing what is best for them. The only wrong way to spend free time, in my view, is to have a sedentary job and then go home and watch television.

Band 9 sample essay about leisure activities

Home  »  IELTS BAND 9 ESSAYS  »  Band 9 sample essay about leisure activities

Some people believe that children’s leisure activities must be educational, otherwise they are a complete waste of time. Do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your experience.

To derive a double benefit from anything is considered a bonus, and this is especially the case when discussing leisure activities for children. The idea to fuse both education and entertainment into one activity is a goal of many educators; some would even believe that failure to do this makes the activity pointless. Drawing from examples in Sweden and reviewing games, such as Pokemon, I firmly believe that all activities should have an educational value.

Leisure activities are a perfect time to take advantage of the receptiveness in a child’s mind, and some countries are adamant about this. Take Sweden, for example. For many years they have legally stipulated that all children’s toys sold in the country should have some educational value. In addition, for such a rule to be passed it must be upheld by scientific research. Therefore, the advantage of incorporating an education element into toys is scientifically proven.

On the other hand, across the UK, children were wasting their time collecting and learning the statistics of each creature on each Pokemon card. If, however, these cards had been intertwined with more educational data the child could have simultaneously gained a more practical education. Due to the child learning large swathes of irrelevant and useless information it can be argued that the time would have been better spent with real facts and figures on the cards.

To conclude, scientific evidence from Sweden and fantasy games such as Pokemon with little educational value are two clear reasons why children’s leisure activities should have an element of learning involved.

Essay on Importance Of Leisure Time Reading Questions and Answers

Ielts reading passage – essay on importance of leisure time.

leisure time essay ielts

Essay on Importance Of Leisure Time

In simple words, leisure is the free time of an individual life besides their busy schedule. Generally, the holidays with no piled-up tasks or the not occupied days are the leisure time. Leisure is the form of freedom from domestic chores, professional life or business activities, education, or health complications with a relieved mind and no pending tasks. The time of unpaid duties is also not reflected by leisure as you get occupied by some of the other household chores and even babysitting. Thus, leisure is the untouched time by any physical activity.

Pursuing this further, leisure is not a weekly time in one’s life. The schedule of the current generation has been so occupied that leisure is almost eliminated from their monthly routine. A lot of times, strugglers or established personalities go through severe emotional traumas as they lack self-time in their life. They become so occupied with their tasks and homely chores that they forget about their interest and neglect what they love, focusing on what others want them to get attached to. Thus, the prior importance of leisure time in one’s life is for self-realization. This allows one to think about what they are doing and decide whether they are going on the desired track or not. The frustrated or panicked mind often allows us to do a lot of things that are not planned or desired by ourselves. During this phase, leisure allows us to think about it and work on them well.

In addition to this, the exploration of one’s interest gets a priority during leisure. We often end the passion due to professionals’ economy playing a vital role. The suppressed interest can get into the limelight or the un-successful plans of traveling or exploring get evolved with leisure. The fresh entry back to the work or regular lifestyle is possible only with leisure time in life. After all, leaving the regular bag of office, institution, family, domestic works, and gadgets is important to realize how happy life can be in absence of them and in the presence of a real lovable individual or the environment where one always wanted to be. The allocation should not be made into a routine with hours set but there has to be freedom to be yourself apart from what the situation wants you to be or fit in the role.

In the final analysis, a healthy relationship, a balanced life, a proper reliable profession, and a happy family is possible only with an emotionally and physically stable individual. In this regard, leisure allows you to realize what has been missing in my life and what you need to achieve so far. Leisure is a time taken by an individual to explore themselves and make a to-do list or go through the already made one. Hence, leisure is a key for a happy life and a necessity for a busy schedule because humans cannot live a life of machines and emotional stability requires relieving actions.

Some People Think it is Important to Use Leisure Time- IELTS Writing Task 2

Limited-Time Offer : Access a FREE 10-Day IELTS Study Plan!

Some people think it is important to use leisure time for activities that improve the mind, such as reading and doing word puzzles. Other people feel that it is important to rest the mind during leisure time. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Discussion Essay

Introduction

Sentences 1&2 – Paraphrase the topic using synonyms to create an understanding of it.

Sentence 3 – Mention that the essay will discuss both sides of this contentious argument, and then final perspectives will be given.

Body paragraphs

Paragraph 1 – Talk about how reading and doing word puzzles can help improve the mind during leisure time.

Paragraph 2 – Talk about giving rest to the mind can be essential between the work hours.

Restate your views.

Sample Essay

Some individuals assert that spare time should be spent on some healthy indoor activities such as reading and doing scrabble. In contrast, others believe it is essential to rest to recharge the mind without consciously having any thoughts. This essay will discuss both sides of this contentious argument, and then I will give my perspectives.

To start with, leafing through a storybook and playing crossword games are effective ways of reducing stress. No matter how much anxiety we face in daily life, the pressure may slip away when we lose ourselves in a great story of a fiction book or focus on solving the crossword puzzles. Reading helps to distract one from the tension one faces and keeps it in the present moment. Additionally, these activities foster cognitive stimulation. Studies have shown that being mentally active through activities such as reading and doing puzzles preclude one from losing brain power and reduce the progress of dementia. Like any other muscle in our body, brain muscle needs to be exercised to stay active.

On the flipper side, it is claimed that resting the mind helps obtain peacefulness and relaxation. Therefore, people who soothe their brains during leisure time are less likely to fatigue during worktime. To illustrate this, a recent survey by Harvard University found that individuals who take a nap or rest on a balcony enjoying the landscape are happier at work and less stressed. However, developing high levels of relaxation could create laziness among workers and, to prevent this, it is paramount to practice mental flexibility.

In conclusion, I would like to say that constructive activities in our leisure time could immensely benefit us. Moreover, by doing these activities, one can gain plenty of knowledge to assist them in their coming life.

Meaning – state a fact or belief confidently and forcefully. Example – It did not assert jurisdiction over any person or any asset outside the court’s territorial jurisdiction.

Meaning – scratch or grope around with one’s fingers to find, collect, or hold on to something. Example – I began to scrabble and fumble around on the floor, searching for some kind of weapon.

  • Contentious

Meaning – causing or likely to cause an argument; controversial. Example – Solve this mess, or the situation could easily become more contentious.

Meaning – of, relating to, being, or involving conscious intellectual activity (such as thinking, reasoning, or remembering) Example – This puzzle is meant to assess your cognitive abilities.

  • Stimulation

Meaning – encouragement of something to make it develop or become more active. Example – In severe cases, which do not respond to these drugs, deep brain stimulation has been found to have moderate success.

Meaning – a chronic or persistent disorder of the mental processes caused by brain disease or injury and marked by memory disorders, personality changes, and impaired reasoning. Example – Before you start to panic, there is a crucial difference between dementia and general absent-mindedness.

Meaning – time when one is not working or occupied; free time. Example – Half of the first floor is occupied by an ice cream bar and a leisure area with orange furniture.

Meaning – extreme tiredness resulting from mental or physical exertion or illness. Example – Alcohol interacts with fatigue and increases its effects.

Meaning – more important than anything else; supreme. Example – That is why a fast de-escalation of violence is paramount.

Meaning – a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease about something with an uncertain outcome. Example – Darryn’s anxiety increased as he watched the ticking clock, wondering where Kara was.

Men normally go outing with their friends mostly away from the home where they can have a cup of tea with friendly gossip. They would also like to play some outdoor games such as cricket or football. On the other hand, Women like to stay at home and watch TV. They also like to chat with their friends. In my hometown women also prefer to go around the park and relax in the evening.

My hometown is not having the night clubs like metro cities. However, it has some beautiful gardens and awesome countryside where people can enjoy far better than clubs. Moreover, we have got myriad sports clubs. People can play different games or exercise there.

No all days are not same. I am a working professional. So, in weekdays I have got a hectic schedule.  I normally work between 9 to 7 in weekdays. But I have some free time in weekend.

Definitely, as a human being we need change. It is a human nature that we require new activities frequently to get refreshed. If we do not find new activities, we lack excitement and same predictable daily routine gives us feeling of boredom.

What would you like to change in your daily routine?

For the past several years, I have been in a habit of sleeping late and waking up late in the morning. I would like to change that as it is detrimental for my health.  Furthermore, I would like to change the habit to take my mobile and scroll digital and social media. This new bad habit of watching and scrolling on mobiles for several hours is dangerous of mental health.

I am trying hard to get rid of these two habits so there would be more time for other healthy activities.

Recent Exam Question in IELTS Writing Task 2 – Essay (Leisure Time for Children)

In the IELTS writing task 2 question, you will be given 40 minutes and you have to write minimum 250 words, for sure. Writing less than this would be penalized by the examiner. At the same time, it is essential to cover up all the essential parts of the question effectively. Now, let us try to attempt the following IELTS writing task 2.

In many countries, school-age children spend their free time doing homework. Is it a good or a bad thing? Give examples based on your own experience.

Sample Answer:

It is a common trend in a number of countries that school students prefer doing their school homework even during their leisure time which is not a good thing as it would be affecting their health if they do not participate in other activities such as sports or entertainment.

To begin with , it is prevalent in many countries that children studying in schools spend a lot of their time in completing homework. The reason is that they are over-burned to complete extra work on every subject such as Science, Mathematics, and others. In order to meet the deadlines, they are left with no option but to do their homework. In addition to this , competition is another major reason . To beat the growing competition, children are made to devote a maximum number of hours towards studies to achieve great results. For example , getting even 90% score is not sufficient since there is a large crowd of students who are already gaining 98% marks. To beat that 8% margin, they spend hours overnight committing more time.

Further to this , this increasing trend among the kids studying in schools is pathetic as it is compromising on their health. Firstly , students do not skip to perform any physical activity such as playing cricket, basketball and other sports. Thus, they would not be able to give sufficient time towards their health and fitness. In addition to this , entertainment and fun related activities such as playing a musical instrument, dancing and others would be limited, so their school life would end up in boredom .

Overall , it can be said that it is not appropriate for the students to spend most of the time in doing homework. They should rather be allowed to give balanced time for performing all types of activities.
