Essay on my Hobby : My Hobby is Gardening

I belong to a farmer’s family. After settling down in the metro cities, I have noticed my family craving to spare their time for Mother Nature. Having a family background with an ample number of agricultural jobholders, I decided to devise a small garden of my own. Earlier in my penthouse, I decided to create a small rooftop garden due to lack of space. This is how gardening helped me release the amplitude amount of endorphins in my whole family after a stressful day. Gardening is the most accessible and manageable task for a human being. All it requires is enough motivation for a better yield. It is a decampment towards the serenity and beauty of nature with loads of unadulterated indulgence. Gardening has always helped me look towards a better future. It has maintained me to stay submerged with my fondness for plants and blossoms. It is a  form of recreational activity after my school hours. Springing from botanical gardens to every miniature backyard, I have visited all of them. Attending several gardens motivates me to produce a surplus of plants in my garden.

What do I do for my hobby gardening?

Gardening can be done on several types of soil and with numerous varieties of yield. Gardening can be of many types such as herb, flowers, vegetables or kitchen, rose, rock, water, and indoor gardening. According to the needs and availability of tools and garden supplies suited for the purpose, we choose the respective criteria.

Soil is the most important trait for gardening. It requires the accurate level of manure and water to flourish and drop off blooming yield. Soil is a requirement because it constitutes a certain amount of organisms that help in the conversion of plant nutrients from the putrefied subject. To harvest a beautiful garden, healthy soil is the most important necessity. In my rooftop gardens, I have utilized an inadequate amount of space to grow flowering plants and a few creepers and climbers for my mother’s kitchen. Gardening requires an ample amount of attention and time. Starting from the preparation of the soil to the composting till the blossoms are achieved, everything requires dedication. In the beginning, I started with a proper layout for an inadequate stretch. Then I had to pick among the favored and accessible varieties to start with. Obtaining good seeded plants and accessible supplies available at my home, I started my gardening tenure. To help my mom’s kitchen I even planted a few vegetable seeds such as bitter gourd, lemon, chilies, tomatoes, and a few leafy vegetables. I affirmed to keep my plants away from the weeds and pests. I took assistance from my uncle with organic manures and compost to get a better yield and prettier blossoms for every morning to wake up to. I have used unused plastic bottles to grow creepers and a few flowering and herb plants to create an aesthetic outlook for my garden. Plants such as basil, money plants, rosemary, spinach, and much more hanging houseleeks were grown from the waste bottles. The proper amount of sun and shade are required as it may inhibit adequate plant growth. Butterflies, honey bees, flower beetles are a regular visitor to my garden. A few of my houseplants are ferns, dracaena, philodendron, and aglaonema. The vegetables I have grown are placed in a sunny spot, and there’s an ample amount of water supply adjacent to it. These vegetables are used in our kitchen daily.

Health Benefits of Gardening

Gardening as a hobby comes with several benefits. Possessing a personal garden helps the family with an amplitude amount of perks.

Why Is It Important to Spend Time Outdoors: Essay

Why is it important to spend time outdoors: essay introduction, health effects of spending time outdoor: essay body, exercise & outdoor activities: essay body, mood & concentration benefits of outdoor activities: essay body, essay about outdoor activities: conclusion, works cited.

Do you like spending time in nature with family and friends? Then you will definitely enjoy writing an essay about outdoor activities! But why is it important to spend time outdoors? Essay example on this page has the answer: check it out!

Spending time outside the serenity one is used to have positive effects on the physical and the mental health. Research shows that spending leisure time in those activities not confined to your area improves both the physical and mental well-being.

Outdoor activities includes walking, fishing, running, playing, mountain hiking, biking, horseback riding, boating and fishing, kayaking, picnicking and swimming. It is also healthy to spend time in nature settings for example watching the rivers flowing, adventuring the forests and game parks (Sisson 1).

Research proves that engaging in outdoor activities is significant to the growth and development of the body and the mind. However, this can be achieved through other means like indoors, but with a lot of trouble and expenses (Komaroff 1)

Many people like serenity of spending leisure free time in nature so that they can reduce or eliminate the stress and fatigue of engaging in day-to-day activities. The natural scenery and fresh air outside have the positive effects for both adults and the kids. The overall quality of children’s life improves when they are actively engaged in outdoor activities.

Engaging in outdoor activities means that a person will get enough sunlight. Sunshine acts as a source of vitamin D. When the sunlight hits the skin, the process starts from the involvement of the liver and kidneys; this eventually results in the development of the biologically active form of the vitamin. Many other vitamins do not have powers to fight back the diseases as compared to the vitamin D that has been proved more powerful.

Research proves that vitamin D protects the body against serious diseases like cancer, heart failures, stroke and the diseases of the mind like depression more than other vitamins do. A good source of vitamin D is the exposure of the arms and legs to sunlight for ten to fifteen minutes. Age and the skin color affect the rate at which the skin receives Vitamin D from sunlight.

Older people above 65 years of age generate vitamin D four times the people in their twenties while the dark skinned people produce about half the levels of vitamin D in their blood compared to the white skinned people. Ultra Violet light is the one that generates vitamin D when in contact with the body. However, the UVB light might be blocked by the sunscreens (Komaroff 1).

Research shows that engaging in outdoor activities enables human beings especially children to get more exercise. Researchers from Britain argue that a child who engages in outdoor activities is double active than those engaging in indoor activities. This research was undertaken using machines that track the movement of 1,000 children throughout the day.

It is advisable that one engages in those activities that keep the body in motion for a good body exercise for example walking, hiking, biking, gardening, and cleaning up the yard among other vigorous activities. A good exercise is good for the growth and development of a child (Komaroff 2).

Research shows that human beings become happy if they exercise in outdoor activities. Natural light tends to boost people’s mood and the only place one can access natural light is by moving out of the enclosures. Physical activities relax and cheer up people. Spending time outdoors makes an individual more proactive, cheerful and initiates a happy mood.

Researchers call the practice of exercising the body in the presence of nature as the “green exercise”. Such exercises are significant to the growth and development of the mind. Researchers from England argue that engaging in a green exercise for at least five minutes improves self-esteem, enjoyment and mood (Komaroff 2). Outdoor activities have the mental benefits such as the overall stress reduction.

Thinking capacity also tends to improve through improvement of attention that enhances connectivity in the brain and allows people to have good focus. Workouts also give one an opportunity to be joyous (Sisson 2). Spending time outdoor improves concentration. Children with emotional and mental disorders tend to experience the feeling of depression, lack of concentration and are not hyperactive.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in children causes lack of concentration when they are subjected to too much work indoors. Research shows that such children will have better focus and improved concentration if subjected to the outdoor activities. Studies show that children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) perform better in examinations after a scenery walk through a park than after an indoor walk in the neighborhood.

Other studies show that outdoor exercises have positive effects on children with ADHD. Adults who have a shorter span of concentration also experience this condition and engaging in outdoor activities may solve this (Komaroff 3). Spending time in an open natural setting drastically decreases the symptoms of ADHD, mental and behavioral disorders in children.

Workouts in a natural environment offer an emotional and behavioral release for the people with depression while the challenges faced during the adventure in outdoor activities help in regaining trust, self-confidence and improved self-esteem (Sisson 2).

Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh showed that patients with spinal surgery might heal faster when exposed to the natural light. When they are under medication, they tend to experience pain and stress. Another study reported that when a patient views outside through the window it has a positive impact on the healing process. This is due to the fresh air coming in from the window (Komaroff 3).

Other studies have also shown that, spending leisure time in nature decreases prevalence to diseases such as blood pressure, heart failure, and sympathetic nerve activity. The anti-cancer protein and natural killer cells increase over time to prevent the infection and the growth of the cancer cells.

Body exercises done outdoors in green and blue natural, water like swimming enhance the growth of such body protective cells. Studies have also proved that engaging in outdoor activities increases body energy, more positive hyperactivity, less depression, anger reduction, less confusion, and reduced stress as compared to the indoor workouts (Sisson 1).

Spending time outdoor means going outside the enclosed setting to a natural space where one gets enough time to adventure what is new in the natural setting. Researches proof that engaging in outdoor activities is beneficial for the growth and development of the physical and mental wellbeing of an individual. In children, spending time outdoor prevents the emotional and behavioral disorders.

A lot of research has been done to counter the claims that indoor activities play the same role as those by the outdoor activities in the physical and mental health of an individual such as the cost and the trouble associated with indoors. For a healthy living, both the children and the adults must be engaged in the outdoor activities in the natural setting such as rivers, mountains and forests.

My Hobby – Gardening : Article, Essay, IELTS Cue Card, Speech

Introduction [essay on gardening].

A hobby is an activity done on regular basis in leisure time for pleasure and recreational purposes. It is not intended to be a source of income. With that being said, there are as many hobbies as there are people. Depending on your taste, any activity or sports can be made a hobby. Activities such as swimming, gardening, reading, et cetera are some of the most common hobbies. My hobby happens to be gardening.

Gardening and its wonders (Why Gardening is My Hobby?)

Ever since I was a kid I liked to be around plants and trees. Also, I was very much fascinated about gardening whenever I saw people planting trees in the neighborhood. As I grew up I started buying plants and practice gardening in my leisure time. I’ve learned a lot since then and now I’m a self-made gardener. It may not look like it but it is fairly easy to learn gardening and I can say that with my own experience. If you have no idea about gardening, it may seem like too much work and you may fear to mess things up, but it is okay to make mistakes. I too made silly mistakes in the beginning but I never stopped doing it because the activity gave me immense pleasure. I always had something to look forward to during holidays or lean work days. Also, I find spending time with nature very relaxing, especially after long work hours.

The first thing you want to do is set up soil bed. Based on where you live and the kind of access you have to resources, it is pretty easy as long as you don’t plan to cultivate exotic species which I won’t recommend for beginners. Start by buying seeds or plants you like that are native to your place. For starters applying and spreading organic compost and manure should suffice although you can go for some general fertilizers also. Just pay attention to the quantity you put in soil, less is better than more. Seeds can be spread on soil bed with a thin layer of soil on top. Just make sure that seeds are not densely packed. Another important thing is to water plants as per requirements. Avoid overwatering as it adversely affects plant’s health. Look up on the internet or some catalog to find water requirements for your plants. Above all it is necessary to understand that gardening is not a one-day thing, it requires consistency.

Conclusion (Speech On My Hobby – Gardening)

Developing any hobby is good as it helps to release stress and allows you to actually indulge in activities you really enjoy doing in leisure hours. Gardening just happens to be one great hobby. It also has benefits like allowing you to spend time with plants and trees in a clean and pollution-free environment. This is especially true if you do it in early morning hours before going to work. That’s what I do most of the time, except on the weekends. However, I always ensure that my hobby does not sabotage my family and other social commitments and it actually helps me maintain my workday productivity for the entire week. Having a hobby is great however while deciding to inculcate a hobby one should not follow others advice and should rather go for something that you really enjoy doing and which is compatible with your lifestyle. Pleasure from the activity is the most important of all considerations. And if you happen to choose gardening, welcome abroad!!

IELTS Essay, topic: Leisure time activities

  • IELTS Essays - Band 6

Some people think that it is important to use leisure time for activities that develop the mind, such as reading and doing crossword puzzles. Others feel that it is important to give one’s mind a rest in leisure time. Discuss.

leisure time activities essay gardening

Some people want to relax after their day of work. These people may prefer to relax by watching movies, reading or getting a massage. People who have a such as doctors, teachers and builders may choose these types of activities. If you are a doctor, you may feel that you want to let your body rest after work and you don’t want to do a five kilometer run after work, because you are already physically tired.

On the other hand, some people choose to be active in their leisure time because they do . For example, these people many spend all day sitting on a chair and their work. At the end of a working day, they a backache, and all of their body tired so they need to stretch their arms and improve their health by doing some activity such as going to the gym or swimming.

To sum up, the important thing is that people want to stay healthy by choosing what is best for them. In my view, the wrong way is to stay at home in your leisure time if you have a job.

This essay needs work. It has the right structure and covers the task. However there are many poorly structured sentences, many of the sentences are too simple and don’t have enough complexity, there are grammatical errors and some prepositions are use incorrectly (see comments underlined in blue). Overall, this looks like a Band 6 – 6.5 essay.

Gardening As A Hobby:

Gardening is my hobby. It brings me in touch with the green plants and flowers and fills my lungs with pure Oxygen. The great pleasure I get from planting, and growing flowers, and vegetables during the season is not comparable with any other feelings.

It is useful in many ways. Through this blog, I made an attempt to create awareness about planting as a hobby and show you several reasons why I think this is one of the best hobbies you can have.

Benefits of Gardening As A Hobby:

Gardening is a hobby that can be easily picked up in any location and at any time of year. There are many different types of gardens to try out but no matter the type of garden you choose, the benefits are sure to follow.

Following are 16 amazing benefits that make gardening one of the best hobbies for a person.

1: Garden Is A Learning School For Your Kids

Garden Is A Learning School For Your Kids

Gardening is an incredible activity to do with kids. Children can learn the names of colors, fruits, and vegetables.

By planting and harvesting, they will also learn to count. Maintaining a garden will also make your kids more creative. And, of course, knowing how to grow food is a skill that will assist them throughout their entire life.

A gardening toy set like this is not only cute but also functional. Kids can become little gardeners and play with dirt, and sand or do some gardening work. It’s a great way to promote their imagination and physical activity and make them more creative.

So when they’re not playing video games they could be gardening.

2: Gardening Is Close To Mother Nature

Gardening enables kids to spend time in nature, being up close and personal with butterflies, ladybugs, worms, ants, and spiders.

It allows children to get comfortable with soil while learning that food comes from the earth and not a drive-through.

3: Children Will Learn To Take Ownership And Responsibility

Children learn To Take Ownership And Responsibility in gardening

Gardening is a great way to teach your children, ownership, and responsibility. It’s a good idea to get them their own tools.

It a llow s them to be in charge of their little patch of earth. It will demand their attention to watering , weeding , and harvesting.

You can learn more about gardening with kids in this book by Brandy Stone . This 150-page book is filled with fun and interesting concepts for both kids and adults to learn.

4: Gardening Teaches Sustainability And Conservation

Gardening as a hobby also teaches children two universal truths.

  • How to sustain themselves in their environment. and
  • Resources are not infinite, and they need to be cultivated.

5: You Will Achieve Food Security By Growing Your Own Organic Foods

One of the most compelling reasons to start your own garden is food security. Though you can get organic vegetables outside in the market, you are never really sure of their quality. There are always doubts about exactly how it is grown unless you do it yourself.

In a world with so many uncertainties about food availability and quality, having control over your food source can be a game changer.

When you grow your own garden, you decide what goes in the soil and to the plant but more importantly WHAT DOESN’T .

Gardening reduces your dependency on grocery stores and agricultural industries that may be subject to disruptions or prone to contamination.

6: You Will Get The Food At Its Best Condition For Consumption

Any produce is at its peak nutritional value when ripe. Fruits and vegetables are plucked well before they mature. Then they have to travel a long way before they come to the supermarkets. It may even become ripe by the time you eat it.

The nutrition in the fruit comes from the stem of the living plant. and the value actually decreases with each passing day, after harvest.

When you have your own garden you get the vegetables as nutritious as they can get with most of the nutrients intact.

7: Gardening Gives You Fun Ways To Do Exercises

Gardening is a Fun Way To Do Exercises

Gardening is a fun way to burn calories and improve your physical health. From carrying objects to digging and planting, building sheds, and just moving stuff around in your yard, you are challenging your muscles daily.

And because it’s enjoyable, you don’t even realize that you’re doing physical exercise and increasing endurance, flexibility, strength, and overall physical health. Your garden is your gym.

8: Gardening Boosts Your Immunity

One key benefit of growing plants is that it boosts your immunity which goes a long way towards healthy living. This is because you are likely to have constant contact with microorganisms, so your immune system will be put to the test.

Another benefit of gardening is while working in your garden you also absorb a lot of vitamin D. Vitamin D strengthens your bones, and lowers the risk of developing multiple sclerosis,  prostate cancer,  breast cancer, and many other diseases.

Well, as we age our immune systems naturally get weaker, so having a hobby like gardening can help give you an upper hand against germs and viruses and ensure living a healthier life.

REASON 9:Gardening Can Save You A Lot Of Money

The average family with a vegetable garden can save a lot of money when they grow veggies rather than buying them from outside.

This might sound very little, but over the years these amounts add up.

10: Gardening Saves You A Lot Of Time From Visiting Stores

Gardening Can Save You A Lot Of Money

Imagine a situation. You might have forgotten to take cilantro while buying your vegetables. And in the midst of cooking, you are in dire need of some of them. You can always fetch it from your Kitchen garden .

Having fresh ingredients in your backyard beats a trip to the store every time!

11: Better Taste Every Time

Homegrown vegetables taste SIGNIFICANTLY better than store-bought ones.

12: Endless varieties of fruits and veggies

Grocery stores and farmers’ markets usually keep two or three varieties of fruits or veggies. But when you grow your own you can choose seeds from an endless list. Do you know how many varieties of tomatoes you can grow in your kitchen garden?

13: Gardening Can Lower Your Stress Levels

Gardening Can Lower Your Stress Levels

Gardening can help you find a way to calm down, rewind, and relax your mind. It has been proven that gardening can lower your stress levels just as much as other activities like reading or meditation.

It is because gardening outdoors helps relieve tension in the mind and body, keeping you calm and happy. When we dig our hands into the earth or nurture plants, we release tension and anxiety, creating a soothing effect on our minds and bodies.

So the more time you spend planting outdoors the lesser will be the stress.

14: Gardening Improves Mental Health

Another benefit of gardening is that it improves your mood and overall mental health. Gardening is a great way to pass the time, connect with nature, and relax in your own backyard.

Research shows that when we go outside and work in our garden, our anxiety levels can go down, and our mental health improves.

Band 9 sample essay about leisure activities

Home  »  IELTS BAND 9 ESSAYS  »  Band 9 sample essay about leisure activities

Some people believe that children’s leisure activities must be educational, otherwise they are a complete waste of time. Do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your experience.

To derive a double benefit from anything is considered a bonus, and this is especially the case when discussing leisure activities for children. The idea to fuse both education and entertainment into one activity is a goal of many educators; some would even believe that failure to do this makes the activity pointless. Drawing from examples in Sweden and reviewing games, such as Pokemon, I firmly believe that all activities should have an educational value.

Leisure activities are a perfect time to take advantage of the receptiveness in a child’s mind, and some countries are adamant about this. Take Sweden, for example. For many years they have legally stipulated that all children’s toys sold in the country should have some educational value. In addition, for such a rule to be passed it must be upheld by scientific research. Therefore, the advantage of incorporating an education element into toys is scientifically proven.

On the other hand, across the UK, children were wasting their time collecting and learning the statistics of each creature on each Pokemon card. If, however, these cards had been intertwined with more educational data the child could have simultaneously gained a more practical education. Due to the child learning large swathes of irrelevant and useless information it can be argued that the time would have been better spent with real facts and figures on the cards.

To conclude, scientific evidence from Sweden and fantasy games such as Pokemon with little educational value are two clear reasons why children’s leisure activities should have an element of learning involved.

Apparently, Gardening Can Be Just as Good for You as Going to the Gym

  • Research shows that less than an hour a week of these activities is linked to decreased rates of death from cancer and cardiovascular diseases.
  • There have been other studies that also speak to the mental health benefits of gardening.

Break out your gardening gloves ! A new study reveals that doing leisure activities—like planting flowers, and yes, even weeding—can be as healthy for you as a workout.

The study , which took into account 11 years of data gathered from almost 90,000 participants from across the globe, tracked “leisure time physical activity." Think: dancing, walking, and possibly even doing some vigorous coloring .

The research, collected from the National Health Interview Survey, performed annually by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , saw that doing just 10 to 59 minutes a week of these activities could lower your risk of dying from cardiovascular diseases and cancer by 18 percent, compared to an inactive lifestyle.

Move around even more? 150 to 299 minutes of hobby-fueled activity every week led to a 31 percent decrease in "all-cause mortality."

While this study is focused on sneaking in some light cardio in more enjoyable ways than the elliptical, it's not the first time gardening has been associated with improved health.

A meta-analysis linked gardening to reduced rates of depression, anxiety, as well as a general increase in quality of life—which, anyone who has ever spent a quiet morning cathartically pruning roses can attest to.

Even Oprah enjoys time tending to her harvest.

And, if the survey isn't enough to convince you, let this joyful photo serve as a PSA to plant some seeds.
