After Bieber and model Hailey Baldwin were frequently spotted together during the summer of 2018, TMZ reported that the two had gotten engaged during a dinner in the Bahamas on July 7. The lovebirds had previously dated before splitting in 2016, even enduring a "long period of time when we weren't friends," according to Bieber, before rekindling their friendship and then their romance.

Bieber and Baldwin reportedly obtained a marriage license at a New York City courthouse on September 13, 2018, just two months after getting engaged. According to TMZ, Bieber was overheard saying, “I can’t wait to marry you, baby." Later that year he confirmed he was a married man.

On September 30, 2019, the couple held a second, larger marriage ceremony at the Montage Palmetto Bluff in Bluffton, South Carolina.

Their song went on to hit the number one spot on the Hot 100; after 16 consecutive weeks in the top spot, it broke the all-time record as the longest-standing chart-topping song in August 2017.

Justin Bieber was raised by a single mom. His dad, Jeremy Bieber, left to start a family with another woman. According to some media reports, Justin and his father weren’t close growing up; his dad has been at times described as being a “deadbeat” who only resurfaced after Justin achieved YouTube fame. Jeremy reportedly considered becoming a rapper himself and has struggled with addiction problems. It was also reported that Justin had been partying with his dad just before his January 2014 arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Despite their allegedly complicated relationship, Justin has maintained that he and his dad are close. In 2010, 16-year-old Justin told Seventeen magazine: “I have a great relationship with my dad. YouTube & Rise to Fame

Bieber always had an interest in music. His mother gave him a drum kit for his second birthday and, as he tells it, he was "basically banging on everything I could get my hands on." But it was an obscure talent contest in his hometown, in which the 12-year-old Bieber finished second that put him on the road to superstardom. As a way to share his singing with family, Justin and his mom began posting clips of Bieber performing covers of Stevie Wonder , Michael Jackson and Ne-Yo on YouTube.

Within months, Justin was an Internet sensation, with a large following of fans and an eager manager arranging for the teenager to fly to Atlanta to consider a record deal. There, Bieber had a chance meeting with Usher, who eventually signed the young singer to a contract.

In the spring of 2015, Justin Bieber was featured in a prominent Calvin Klein ad with Dutch model Lara Stone. The shots, which show a grown-up Bieber stripped down to his underwear, were a fan favorite.

A year later, Bieber was featured in another Calvin Klein ad campaign, this time with model and reality star Kendall Jenner .

'Never Say Never' Movie

In 2011, Bieber took to the big screen in the concert documentary Never Say Never . His fans crowded movie theaters to catch him in action on stage and get a glimpse of his life behind the scenes. The movie, which eventually earned more than $73 million at the box office, also had guest appearances by Kanye West , Miley Cyrus and Bieber's musical mentor Usher.

Courting Controversy

While still only in his teens, Bieber survived his first public scandal. A woman filed suit against Bieber in 2011, claiming that he was the father of her child. But a DNA test proved that the young pop star was not the father and the woman dropped her lawsuit. Bieber sang about the scandal in the song "Maria."

That was only the beginning of a string of scandals, bad behavior and unfavorable press for the young pop artist. In March 2013, Bieber's neighbor accused the singer of spitting on him, in addition to making threatening comments. Two months later, denizens of Bieber's neighborhood in Calabasas, California, complained that he was driving too fast in a residential area.

On April 15, 2013, Bieber visited a museum in Amsterdam that paid tribute to Anne Frank . Upon writing that the young Holocaust victim "would have been a Belieber," he faced more backlash from the public. On July 9, 2013, his image was scrutinized once again after he was recorded urinating in a janitor's bucket and yelling "F--- Bill Clinton ," holding a photo of the former president. Although he later apologized, his previously squeaky clean image began to tarnish even more.

On January 14, 2014, Bieber's home in California was searched after he was accused of egging a neighbor's house. Nine days later, Bieber was arrested for suspicion of drag racing and driving under the influence. After a Breathalyzer test showed that Bieber wasn't sober, he was taken into custody where he stayed until he posted bail, which was set at $2,500. The charges were eventually reduced to resisting arrest.

Health Battles

As he matured into his 20s, Bieber seemed intent on cleaning up his act and largely managed to avoid embarrassing incidents. However, the pop star still drew attention for his personal issues, particularly when it was reported in February 2019 that he was being treated for depression.

Bieber confirmed his situation in March, posting a photo to Instagram of himself praying with Kanye West, with the caption: "Just wanted to keep you guys updated a little bit hopefully what I’m going through will resonate with you guys. Been struggling a lot. Just feeling super disconnected and weird.. I always bounce back so I’m not worried just wanted to reach out and ask for your guys to pray for me. God is faithful and ur prayers really work thanks .. the most human season I’ve ever been in facing my stuff head on.."

In a January 2020 Instagram post, Bieber revealed that he had recently battled a case of mononucleosis and been diagnosed with Lyme disease.

Docuseries: 'Justin Bieber: Seasons'

In late January 2020, the artist debuted his 10-part YouTube docuseries, Justin Bieber: Seasons . The first episode, titled "Leaving the Spotlight," focused on his retreat from the public eye after cancelling the final weeks of a tour in 2017 and his journey back to recording again, with later episodes delving into his marriage and battles with depression.

In his new Amazon Prime documentary Justin Bieber: Our World , the Canadian pop star chronicles a 30-day countdown to his 2020 New Year's Eve Show at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles.

The feature-length documentary comes on the heels of Bieber's other forays into the genre, the most recent of which was his 2020 YouTube docuseries Justin Bieber: Seasons . In that series, he opens up about his struggles with a Lyme disease diagnosis and a drug addiction.

While Justin Bieber: Our World is not quite as personal, it gives fans a behind-the-scenes glance at the story behind Bieber's comeback concert. The Stratford, Ont.-born singer even helped film parts of the documentary — vlog-style.

"I'm really starting to get into this vlogging thing," the singer remarks at one point, holding a camera at arm's length. "Except [for] the fact that I don't know how these dudes do it, 'cause my arm is sore."

Bieber performed on the roof of a famous Los Angeles hotel

The New Year's Eve concert was Bieber's first full live performance in three years, after the conclusion of his Purpose world tour, and he and a film crew marked the occasion by capturing footage in the month leading up to the show.

According to the documentary, the singer and his team had to think outside of the box after COVID-19 restrictions forced concert venues to shut down.

They settled on an outdoor show overlooking Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles; Bieber performed atop the Beverly Hills Hotel ballroom roof, where 240 VIP hotel guests could watch the show from their balconies.

And fans in more than 150 countries around the world were given access to the show via the streaming platform VenewLive — though it didn't go off without a hitch, as Bieber fever forced the site to crash .

Lead choreographer tested positive for COVID-19 during rehearsals

Wellness juice shots, rapid COVID-19 tests and masks galore — this was no typical Bieber performance.

Those involved with the show's pre-production and rehearsals were tested for COVID-19 each morning.

Then, just days before the show, Bieber's lead choreographer, Nick DeMoura, tested positive for the coronavirus after developing mild symptoms. He was forced to quarantine for 14 days, missing rehearsals in the process.

"If any main players get it, the show's over," Chris Gratton, the co-show designer, says at the top of the film.

That wasn't quite the case, in the end, as rehearsals continued despite DeMoura's absence.

Though Bieber himself isn't shown getting tested during the documentary, he acknowledged the importance of the team's protocols, applauding how "meticulous" everyone had been in adhering to them.

"I think we're just so lucky that we get to work during this time," Bieber said. "There are a lot of people who don't, so I feel like it's a big blessing for us."

Longtime member of Bieber's team says he is 'extremely loyal'

Some of Bieber's crew have been touring with the singer since he was just a kid with a big voice.

In fact, the documentary is a bit of a love-fest between Bieber and his long-standing team members. Key players like the singer's security manager, lead choreographer and band members have all been working with him for more than a decade.

Lead choreographer DeMoura has been with the singer for 11 years, having started as an alternate dancer during the singer's My World tour. 

"When you've toured with someone for 10 years, you've pretty much lived with them," DeMoura says in the film. "You become brothers automatically."

Other veterans from Bieber's pack include DJ Tay James and musical director and bass player Bernard (Harv) Harvey.

Lauren Walters, Bieber's director of operations and security, also reflects on working with the singer for 11 years in the film.

"He is extremely loyal to his team, his friends," Walters said. "For us — his team members who have been here over the years — we love him, we care about him tremendously."

Film features 17 performances from Bieber's concert

A good chunk of the dance-heavy documentary is dedicated to footage from the concert itself. Shots of the performance are interspersed with fan footage, much of it filmed as audience members were watching Bieber from those hotel balconies.

In the performance, the pop singer takes to the stage with a crew of backup dancers, an elaborate lighting structure flashing behind them.

The film's set list included 17 of Bieber's most popular songs, most of which are from Changes (2020) and Purpose (2015). But Bieber also delivered hits from his most recent album, Justice (2021), including Holy , a song he recorded with Chance the Rapper, and Anyone , which he dedicated to his wife, Hailey Bieber.

Bieber wants to have a baby with his wife this year

According to the film, if Bieber's New Year's wish comes true, he and wife Hailey could be with child soon.

A video log dated Dec. 31, 2020 — the date of the concert performance — shows Hailey Bieber asking what her husband's intentions are for the next year. Bieber replies that he hopes they'll "squish out a nugget," a tongue-in-cheek reference to having a baby.

Hailey Bieber responds with surprise, then seems to let him down gently, with a firm, "Maybe."

The couple dated casually before confirming their relationship in 2018 and marrying later that year. Last month, some fans speculated that the 24-year-old model was pregnant after Bieber put his hand on her stomach while attending the Met Gala.

Much of the film's vlog-style footage features Bieber walking outdoors with his wife as they discuss the impending concert and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pop star got somewhat personal elsewhere in the documentary, saying that his home life growing up was "unpredictable" and that having a life partner has aided his mental health.

He was raised by his unwed mother, Patricia Mallette, though his father, Jeremy Jack Bieber, maintained contact with the two. Mallette worked low-paying office jobs to provide for her son. The two lived in low-income housing.

At age 12, Bieber won second prize in a local talent contest. He taught himself guitar, trumpet, drums, and piano. His mother posted videos of Bieber performing to YouTube.

A former marketing executive, Scooter Braun, saw some of these videos and tracked Bieber down. He took Bieber to Atlanta, Georgia , to make demo tapes in 2007. In October 2008, Bieber signed with Island Records. Braun became his manager.

In 2009, Bieber released several singles to great acclaim. He appeared successfully on several television programs.

In 2010, his first album, My World 2.0 was released. It topped the charts in many countries. Bieber's voice began deepening on his way to manhood, and adjustments were made in the recording studio and on the concert stage.

In 2011, Bieber released his second studio album, Under the Mistletoe . Bieber's bio-pic, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never , was also released.

Bieber's third studio album, Believe was released in 2012, by Island Records. This album demonstrates his search for a more mature sound.

On January 23, 2014, Bieber was arrested in Miami Beach , Florida . He was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol , marijuana and prescription drugs , drag racing, and resisting arrest without violence.

Bieber was driving a Lamborghini and R&B singer Khalil was driving a Ferrari . Bieber was released from prison.

Bieber has had several run-ins with the law around the world before this incident.

He is also often the target of criticism and pranks on the Internet.
