Genting SkyWorlds Review

Note that Genting SkyWorlds is an outdoor theme park. Genting Highland also has an indoor theme park which is quite separate to this one. You can read about that here.

This Genting Highland theme park review is only about the outdoor Genting SkyWorlds.

I wrote this Genting Highlands theme park review after visiting in April 2023. At the time, it was still called a “soft opening period” although only one ride wasn’t finished yet.

I had read quite mixed reviews before going. I understood why when I got there.

Despite only having one ride left to officially open, many rides, shops and restaurants were closed. What I really didn’t expect was that most the live entertainment wasn’t running either.

The park itself is beautiful, and there is a lot of potential there. But when I visited in 2023, it just wasn’t worth the ticket price I paid, in my opinion. Too much was not operating, and I was done in a couple of hours. I felt quite ripped off.

However, there were still quite a few rides and the park is beautiful. If you were there with kids (say younger than 12), you’d probably have a great time as the more family friendly rides were generally running and lines were generally very short. You could go on rides quickly which is a huge pro with kids.

I went by myself. I did not want to go on little kid rides, and I was finished far too quick for the entry price. I didn’t even get to go on a single roller coaster.

This put me in a difficult position with writing this review. As it would be a waste of time if I just wrote about what was open on the day I visited as that wouldn’t be that helpful for you as hopefully more is open when you visit.

So I describe everything that *should* be available as well as my personal experiences.

I also want to say that there were more rides shut than what was listed on their site as closed. However, some of these did open by afternoon.

I split up this Genting SkyWorld review by the nine different themed lands at the theme park. Some of the lands still have Fox themed attractions and rides thanks to the settlement deal they reached and some theming is completely unique to SkyWorlds.

Arriving At SkyWorlds

I arrived at the Genting Highlands outdoor theme park right at 10:45am. This was 15 minutes before the opening at 11am when there is an opening show. I wanted to make the most of my time here, but it really wasn’t necessary.

People were already entering through the turnstiles when I arrived, and the show started right in front of us. When the first part of the show was over, we could move a little further in the park but couldn’t leave the first land, Studio City, until 11am.

I had a plan for my visit to make sure I got on my top rides including which ones to use for virtual queue (more about this below) and which ones to head to first when lines were short.

However, the first two I ran to when the park opened were temporarily closed! And I only needed to use my virtual queue once as lines were short or the rides I wanted weren’t open.

Studio Plaza

This is where you enter the Genting Highland outdoor theme park.

This is not the area for rides but you’ll find a cafe perfect for picking up a coffee, a popcorn shop and a Chinese eating option as well as a candy and souvenir shop. It’s a good place to stop on your way out to pick up any souvenirs.

More exciting is the entertainment here at Studio Plaza. The opening show just before the park opens was cool (so be here 15 minutes early), and there is a closing show daily at 5:45pm.

Eagle Mountain

Eagle Mountain is straight ahead after you enter and is where the fun level goes up – at least it will once the ride opens!

It’s themed to be a Californian desert. There is one ride here, Mad Ramp Peak – Full Throttle Racing, which was the one ride not yet open when I visited.

It will be one of the most thrilling Genting SkyWorlds rides when it opens as it’s designed to be the “world’s first dual-powered roller coaster bike ride”. It’ll race around Eagle Mountain at high speeds and looks like it’ll be really fun.

Of course, being California themed means there is a burger bar here and a themed souvenir shop.

Central Park

The next land takes you to the opposite side of the US with New York themed, Central Park. This land was more fun thanks to a few different rides and much more, although not much was happening here when I visited so it had an empty feel.

I feel like once the park is fully opened with more guests, this will be the place to be though.

There is the Night at the Museum: Midnight Mayhem ride which is great for families. The idea is that you are going through a museum where Dexter (I think he is a monkey?!) is on the loose and you need to help out the night guide. The journey is in a little car with 3D glasses and you need to shoot the various exhibits which have come to life. It’s cute, well done and a lot of fun.

For more of an adrenaline rush, there is the ESD Global Defender where you go on a “hybrid aerospace fighter”. For this ride, you can only go on it using the virtual queue, there is no walk-up entry.

It’s a fun ride, but you just kind of spin round and round while going upside down sometimes.

You can then head onto the Independence Day: Defiance which is based on the movie Independence Day. You have to help defend earth from an alien invasion. I was looking forward to this ride, but sadly, it was shut when I visited.

There are a few entertainment options as well that I was looking forward to but I wasn’t able to see any of them 🙁 🙁 🙁

Lake of Dreams is meant to be a cool water fountain show. It is meant to run a few times a day. I checked out the app for times when I arrived at the park and made sure I was there for the first one.

However, it didn’t run then. A sign where the show takes place only had it running around 4pm on the day I visited and did not align with the app or other signs at the park. I was well and truly done with the park by then so I didn’t get to see it.

Another show that is meant to run here is Aqua which takes this fountain show to a whole other level. It’s only meant to run a few times a week with water, sea creatures, mermaids and more. I wasn’t able to see this either.

I was also hoping to see The Chinese Arts where acrobats do tricks and amaze the audience. This didn’t seem to be running at all either.

I also read that there are a couple of rock and roll shows a day in this area… But again, nothing. It would be great if SkyWorlds updated their website to be transparent about all of this.

There are many eating and shopping options here as well as a small arcade with games.

Liberty Lane

The smaller Liberty Lane is up next and you are back in California in San Francisco. There is one ride here – Invasion of the Planet of the Apes. This was probably my favourite ride.

It’s a 3D ride in a pod that takes you round a warehouse, on the Golden Gate Bridge and into the “water”. You are helping save the apes from humans bent on killing them all.

I found it really awesome actually. It was shut when I first entered the park, but thankfully it was soon running.

Robots Rivet Town

Next up is the family friendly Robots Rivet Town where you enter a city of robots!

There are two kid friendly rides with the Bigweld’s Zeppelins (where you ride a zeppelin around and around) and Rivet Town Roller which is more thrilling.

I actually really enjoyed the Rivet Town Roller. I nearly laughed my head off on this 🙂 I only realised accidently that pushing a lever in front of me would make me spin upside down. It was quite a shock and quite enjoyable.

There is also a donut/cake shop here and a gift shop.

Andromeda Base

You leave the robots behind here and head into space at the Andromeda Base. There are three rides here which all take the thrill-level up a notch.

You can start by getting the Terraform Tower Challenge – a tower of terror ride – out of the way! There are great views, but then you come crashing down.

It’s then easy to go on the Alpha Fighter Pilots ride which is a space battle simulation. This is another fun ride that goes round and upside down, a little like the ESD Global Defender.

There is a juice bar here and a Grab ‘n’ Go, perfect if you don’t want to waste any time eating at this park. There are also a couple of arcade games.

Acorn Adventure is a super fun roller coaster with some splash. I could see the track around the park and it looked awesome! It is one of the rides I headed to when the park first opened, but alas, it had technical difficulties and did not open.

There is also a fun show here for families called Ice Age: Time Warp as well as some food outlets. The fruity icy treats at Crash and Eddie’s Frozen Treats looked unreal.

The other ride is Epic Hummingbird Flyers which looks quite pretty and involves you flying around in a hummingbird.

Last is the land of Rio which is themed to be the neighbourhood of Santa Teresa in Rio de Janeiro.

However, I wasn’t able to take this ride.

I was too mad at this point to pay another ringgit after the big entry fee. Since I was there alone, I had to miss it. This is a crazy price to leave a bag for 10 minutes and felt like blatant profiteering.

Genting SkyWorlds App And Virtual Queues

I highly recommend you download the Genting SkyWorlds mobile app via App Store, Google Play or AppGallery before you visit this Genting Malaysia theme park. This app helps you navigate the park, work out what’s happening when and where it is and also allows you to access Virtual Queues (referred to as VQ).

It is possible to access VQ without a smart phone. There are VQ kiosks where you can do that. But it is so nice and easy with the app. I was able to place myself in virtual queues while I waited in line at other rides. When I needed to cancel it (which I did a lot since there turned out to be no queue or, in the case of Samba Glider, because I wouldn’t pay RM20), this was easy to do and I could use it for something else.

Something to really take note of, however, is that a few rides can only be accessed by VQ. So you do need to make sure you register this way. They are currently ESD Global Defender, Ice Age: Time Warp (entertainment rather than a ride) and Boot Camp Training.

If you buy your ticket at least one day in advance, you can buy a discounted ticket from Klook here. This is about 20% off so a great saving.

Something I love about Genting SkyWorlds tickets is the rainy day guarantee. At the time of publishing, if it rains for two hours continuously between 11am – 3pm, you get a free return ticket to use within the next 12 months. If it rains between 3-5pm, you get 50% off the next visit.

Genting SkyWorlds Hotel Review

If you want to stay overnight in Genting Highlands while you visit SkyWorlds, you can’t get a closer option that the Genting SkyWorlds hotel. You can see how close it is in the photo above.

There are also suite options which have living areas and are better presented.

Final Words

However, currently, it is not. I found it quite disappointing.

I had a list of five rides I really wanted to go on that were meant to be open and I only got on two of them. This simply isn’t good enough with the current ticket price.

24 HOURS TO SPARE ? HEAD TO MALAYSIA’S CITY OF ENTERTAINMENT – GENTING HIGHLANDs

gh-view

A view from the rooftop of SkyAvenue Mall – if you haven’t paid a visit to Genting Highlands recently, it’s time to do so !

1. Start Off by Taking A Cable Car To The Peak

cable-car

Called the Awana Skyway, the cable car ride, or gondola lift system takes you up to the peak of Genting Highlands ( SkyAvenue Station ). Leave your car at the Awana Skycentral car park (next to Genting Highlands Premium Outlet) and board the cable car from Awana Station.

Choose from the standard cable cars or pay just a little more for an extra-view on the glass-bottomed ones. Out of the 100 Awana Skyway cable cars, only 10 have the glass bottom so be prepared to wait patiently if you want that see-through view ! And fret not if your phone battery is running low – you can even charge your phone in the cable car.

Pro Tip :  The cable cars slow down but do not completely stop for you to get on and off at the stops, so you do have to be alert and quick. Look out for kids and senior citizens and make sure they are ready to move.

2. Stop to Enjoy the Beauty of Chin Swee Caves Temple

chin-swee

Take the effort to disembark the cable car midway to see the Chin Swee Caves Temple – you will not be disappointed.  Do remember to keep your cable car ticket, as you need it to continue your journey towards SkyAvenue Station at the peak.

The Chin Swee Caves Temple is a Taoist temple that is situated in the most picturesque location in Genting Highlands, on a 28 acre plot of rocky forested land donated by Genting Group founder, the late Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong. It was erected in honour of Reverend Master Chin Swee, a Buddhist monk from the Fujian province who was renowned for his ability to summon rain and to ward away evil spirits.

Coming from the cable car, you will stroll through the beautiful leafy gardens of the temple and it can be quite startling to come across the depiction of the 10 Chambers of Hell. In many ways scarier than any Squid Game , it’s definitely not for the faint-hearted and small children.

See the gigantic statues of Buddha and Kuan Yin, The Goddess of Mercy, and the tomb of Reverend Chin Swee. If you’re up for it,  take a climb up the temple’s iconic nine-storey Pagoda and be rewarded with panoramic views of the mountain and refreshing cold mountain air.

If you’re not in a hurry, stop off at the temple’s Starbucks for a hot cuppa and take in the beautiful, serene surroundings.

3. Find Your Lodgings For The Night – Where To Stay In Genting Highlands

gh-crockford

Crockfords Hotel – the only hotel in Malaysia to receive the prestigious 5-star rating by the Forbes Travel Guide for three consecutive years (2019 – 2021)

If you’re planning on staying overnight in Genting Highlands, do know that although your choices are plentiful, getting a room on weekends and public holidays can be difficult with many punters and holidaymakers booking accommodation.

You can choose to stay in the many hotels and Airbnbs in Awana or Gohtong Jaya away from the peak. Or consider one of newer hotels away from the main peak of Genting Highlands ( which is still just a 10 minute drive away from the main peak ).

If you are planning to stay at the massive ResortWorld Genting ,  they have 7 hotels currently for you to choose from – Crockfords, Genting Grand, Highlands Hotel, Resorts World Awana, Resort Hotel, First World Hotel and Genting Skyworlds Hotel. Do call to check as not all are open as we have just come out from lockdown.

And yes, even after walking around for a few days there, it’s still easy to get lost in the massive indoor structure. After all, it connects all of ResortWorld Genting’s close-knit hotels and many, many attractions.

4. Try Your Luck at Genting’s Casino

genting-casino

Feeling that Lady Luck is on your side ? Then you may want make a visit to the world-famous casinos in Genting Highlands. But do be warned, you may only emerge the next day (either much poorer or richer !)

There are currently 2 casinos in Genting Highlands; Casino de Genting in Genting Grand Complex, and the newer SkyCasino in SkyAvenue Mall.

Proper SOPS have to observed in order to enter the casino. Firstly, persons below 21 years of age and Malaysian Muslims are prohibited from entering. Secondly, proper attire must be worn – plain or batik-print attire and covered shoes for men, smart casual clothing and shoes for women. Lastly, items such as backpacks, cameras and electronic gadgets are not allowed.

Once you are in, try your luck on at least one of the 3,000 slot machines, 400 types of electronic table games, and games such as Blackjack, Tai Sai, Russian roulette and French Boule. There are VIP rooms ( and super VIP rooms ) for the high rollers, and 24 hour dining services so you can quell your hunger between playing.

5. Shop Till You Drop

sky-avenue

SkyAvenue Mall has a plethora of brands such as Thomas Sabo, Calvin Klein, Charles & Keith, Adidas, Austin Reed, Pandora, Tissot, Tomei, Sephora, Godiva, H&M, Uniqlo, Love Bonito and more ! Though once again bear in mind that some may be still be temporarily closed as a result of the lockdown.

If you still haven’t had your fill, then drop by Genting Premium Outlet (GPO) on your way back to KL – scroll down for more on this shoppers haven !

And you need a break from all that shopping, there is the Bona Cinema at SkyAvenue Mall where you can catch the latest flick.

6. Eat Up A Storm

gh-food

Malaysians are never far from their food adventures, and Genting Highlands and their surroundings has plenty of gastronomic attractions to offer the foodies.

Start off at Gohtong Jaya, a town just 5km from the peak, popular for their many seafood restaurants, a surprising fact for a hillside retreat. Hunt down durian puffs and durian ice icecream at the famous Yik Kee restaurant.

At SkyAvenue Genting at the peak, there are choices to tempt even the fussiest of taste buds. There is the al fresco Highline Roof Top Market, world famous fish and chips at The Laughing Fish by Harry Ramsden, Korean bbq, pizza and pasta, Japanese ramen, noodle bars, Asia’s first Burger and Lobster from London and Michelin-starred Beni.

Fun fact : Burger aficionados can now head for the newly opened famous American burger joint, Five Guys   whilst steak lovers will be rejoicing that the world-famous  Wolfgang Steakhouse   is set to open its doors soon.

Suffice to say, at Genting Highlands, you will never go hungry.

7. Thrills Abound at the Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park

skytropolis

For those seeking a thrill outside of the casino, pay a visit to Skytropolis Funland, an indoor theme park owned by Resorts World.

With an unmistakable carnival feel and over 20 exciting rides and colourful lights, Skytropolis is immense at over 400,000 square feet in size and four-storeys high.

You can purchase a one-day or two-day pass, or opt to pay-per-ride. If you can, pay a visit on weekdays as it does tend to get crowded over the weekends. And rest assured, proper covid and social distancing measures are in place though that may mean that you may have to wait for your favourite ride as it goes through a disinfection process several times throughout the day.

There are three categories of rides – Child, Family and Thrill. There’s a ferris wheel, spinning Tea Cups, a Chariot cruise that takes you around the park, a vintage train ride, bumper cars ( one is a kid-friendly version ) and ‘Disco is a thrill’ ride that you do barefoot – sit on a huge spinning disc that swings you back-and-forth with increasing speed while rotating rapidly.

8. More Shopping at Genting Premium Outlet

gpo

Cap off your staycation with an extended shopping spree at Genting Highlands Premium Outlet, the first hilltop Premium Outlet Centre in Southeast Asia,

Breathe in the cool fresh air of the highlands as you stroll around the open-air concept shopping mall. There’s everything from designer fashion, sportswear, luggage, accessories and shoes with hard-to-resist discounts of up to 65%.

And don’t worry about getting hungry or needing a caffeine fix – there’s lot of food choices available for you to refuel then get back to giving your credit card a workout !

Genting Premium Outlet is opposite the Awana Genting Highlands Golf and Resort, and next to the carpark for the cable-car ride, so it’s a convenient pit-stop for before/after your trip to the peak.

Genting Highlands: Why You Should Visit

Located over six thousand feet above sea level and 51km northeast of Malaysia’s bustling capital Kuala Lumpur is the Genting Highlands, Malaysia’s premier tourist destination and getaway. For any person visiting Malaysia, Genting is a complete must-see, bursting with all manner of entertainment prospects, fine dining experiences and luxury accommodations that make the vast majority of Asia’s resorts look pale in comparison.

gh-malaysia-1

Arriving in the Genting Highlands, one is likely to feel rather awe-struck. Jutting out of the top of the most verdant of hills, the resort offers spectacular views of the surrounding area and countryside. Peaks and hills pop up out of the clouds creating a magnificent and heavenly atmosphere, one that seems exceptionally different to the hot bustle of the Malay archipelago’s less vertiginous regions thanks to the spring time weather and temperature that Ulu Kali Mountain experiences all year round. Many visitors’ first experiences of the resort will be via the amazing cable cars that run up to the top of the mountain, a trip that offers views that one can only describe as one of a kind.

In terms of entertainment, Genting excels. There’s an indoor theme park featuring all manner of fun and exciting rides for people of every age as well as an indoor snow area! The indoor park is surrounded by a huge range of restaurants, bars and eateries too; the Coffee Terrace buffet restaurant, western-themed Bubbles & Bites, and the exquisite Genting Palace Restaurant, to name but a few. The resort also features an even more exciting outdoor theme park featuring dizzying rides and even more restaurants, making this a place where no one could feasibly run out of things to do and see.

gh-malaysia-2

Resorts World Genting also features the country’s only casino with multiple outlets throughout the complex, named Casino de Genting. Here players can enjoy all of the slots, table games and experiences one would only usually find on the Las Vegas Strip. Should you decide to try your luck, perhaps it is wise to brush up on your playing skills, for example by doing a few online games at 918kiss .

For adults, Genting Highlands features even more amazing things to do. The hotels dotting the resort feature a great number of bars and terraces that look out over the surrounding countryside, and late night thrills can also be enjoyed at the Genting Club 360 Bar, Cloud 9 nightclub and The Patio wine and whisky bar. All of these regularly feature world-leading acts and bands that make whiling away an evening a complete joy!

Finding suitable accommodations is quite easy, just do an easy Google search for Genting Accommodation and several links with all options pop up. Those that are looking for splurge should either chose Geo Resort & Hotel or Genting Grand. A little bit further away from the busy mountain resort is Grand Ion Delemen Hotel, another fine 5 star hotel. Those that simply want a great bargain should go for a stay at First World Hotel, for years one of the biggest hotels in the world.

TOURISTS MOTIVATION TO VISIT THEME PARKS A CASE STUDY ON GENTING HIGHLANDS.docx

Profile image of Deborah Chukwuji

Tourism is a global phenomenon, which has increasingly grown to attract public interest. The main purpose of this thesis is to examine the key factors that attract tourists to a particular site with case study being Genting Highlands. It is one of Malaysia’s top tourist sites that have attracted many tourists over the past years. There are different reasons why tourists visit this particular theme park. This piece provides an in-depth study of the why tourist visit this highland, their expectations and perceptions and degree of satisfaction. The primary methods of data collection for this thesis are questionnaires and observations that were administered to the sample size. This research not only ends at examining the motivational factors but it also presents evidence to show that the degree of satisfaction a tourist derives from visiting the highlands determines his/her motivation to visit again and extent the awareness of the park to others by word of mouth. Furthermore, from the result of data collection and analysis using appropriate analytical tools and software, motivational factors were determined and from the negative responses from the participants, recommendations were provided on ways in which the park can improve on its shortcomings in order to retain and attract more tourists. This research paper will be useful for educational purpose for students and other individuals in the field of tourism.

Tourists pay for destination brands. This study checked for the relationships between tourists " profile and how they perceived the destination brand of Cape Town. A questionnaire survey of 220 tourists visiting Cape Town was done. This study found that repeat visit, age of tourist, length of stay, and tourist origin, have significant influences on how tourists visiting Cape Town perceived the destination. The top three destination attributes of Cape Town (cognitive images), which enhance visitor experience satisfaction are (1) the overall level of service quality at facilities in Cape Town, (2) the city being one of the best places the tourists have visited, and (3) the destination " s good value for money. The top three emotional valuations of destination attributes (affective images) which enhance visitor experience satisfaction in Cape Town include (1) memorable visit, (2) valuable visit, and (3) friendly and hospitable population. Making tourists experience with full of exaltation and ensuring the qualities whether leading to perceived value and satisfaction enhancement are important issues for tourism managers and destination managers in particular when designating the sustainability strategies. Further, achieving tourist satisfaction is become one of the important objectives for most tourism service businesses and organizations in today's intense completion of the tourism industry. Enhancing tourist satisfaction is believed will generate more profits and lowering marketing expenditures. Thus, the higher the rate of tourist satisfaction with the service quality, the higher the probability to perform future behavioral intentions, such as recommend to others, say positive things and revisit the destination. Cognizant this, this research was conducted at Tigray tourist destination, aimed at analyzing tourists' level of satisfaction in the destination. The study has employed primary data mainly collected from 382 usable sample tourists using a questionnaire and through interview from destination managers. To analyze the collected data SPSS-20 software was adopted and techniques such as descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, ANOVAs were used. Gulmarg in Kashmir valley is globally acclaimed round the year tourist destination with extensive natural beauty and impressive snow-covered mountains. Gulmarg host many tourists annually. To maintain and escalate the existing charm of Gulmarg needs combined efforts from all tourism stakeholders of Gulmarg. But the more important thing is to evaluate the tourists' satisfaction, factors affecting their satisfaction, their intention to revisit and willingness to recommend Gulmarg to other people. Consequently, the present study aims to find out the answers to these questions. Study findings are based on the responses of 115 domestic (Indian) respondents from the study area. The study results reveal that tourists are satisfied with destination aspects and they are willing to revisit and recommend Gulmarg to other people as well. However, in some cases, tourists are not satisfied. The concerned service renders must review their existing customer based policies and improve service quality for the sack of their own business and destination image.

A respondent-completed questionnaire in Cape Town, South Africa was used to check how the activities that tourists enjoyed in Cape Town relate to how they perceive this destination using brand descriptive variables (brand essence, brand image and brand loyalty). 200 questionnaires were received for bivariate and multivariate analyses. This study finds that although tourists found most activities in Cape Town enjoyable; nature and outdoor, food and wine, and shopping enjoyment have more impact in determining the general experience satisfaction of tourists, than beach, and surprisingly, history and cultural activities. Nonetheless, tourists generally perceive Cape Town quite positively. From analyses, this study strongly suggests that the brand position statement for Cape Town should revolve around unique and diverse tourists' attractions in Cape Town, and the memorable experience with which tourists go home from Cape Town. The brand position statement should be linked to Cape Town tourism's integrated marketing communications. This study can assist tourism business owners in Cape Town to evaluate and improve tourism offerings to meet the expectations of visitors, contributing to visitors forming a positive perception towards Cape Town. The findings have implications for similar destinations in the developing economies.

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park – An adventure above the clouds

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park 1 Overview Birds Eye Hero

Explore the Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park at Genting Highlands and discover its marvelous themed zones and high-flying thrills.

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park: A Brief History

This theme park was built as part of Genting Group’s ambitious plans to redevelop their Resorts World Genting resort, which had aging attractions and facilities. First announced in 2013 as ‘ 20th Century Fox Movie World ‘, it was expected to open in 2016 with over 20 rides based on film franchises under Fox Studios and its subsidiaries.

With Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, the park met a major hurdle: Fox terminated its agreement with Genting Group in 2018, sparking a lengthy legal battle between the companies. It was eventually settled with Disney allowing Genting to operate the theme park with limited usage of certain film franchises’ intellectual property. The park was also renamed Genting SkyWorlds .

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park 2 Overview Central Park zone

Construction progress slowed down during these legal entanglements, among other reasons such as the global pandemic. In February 2022, Genting has finally soft-opened the theme park, with some attractions available in technical rehearsals, while others will open much later.

One of my reader friends, Wee-Sen Choo, visited the theme park in May 2022. He has generously contributed his photos and a trip report on his experience at this new theme park.

Photographs, park impressions and review by Wee-Sen Choo. Photos and article edited by Nicholas Yau. Please note that this is a guest contribution and not an official DEJIKI review of the park, as I have not personally visited the theme park. Opinions here are Wee-Sen’s, and not representative of Nicholas or DEJIKI.COM

Entrance area and plaza.

Described by some netizens as the ‘Universal Studios’ of Genting Highlands, the outdoor theme park features 9 unique “worlds”, or themed zones:

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park Photo Tour 1 Entrance Plaza interior

Visitors entering SkyWorlds will first step into a movie theatre lobby, with retail stores and a Starbucks café. It resembles the one at Dolby Theater in Hollywood, with golden carvings of the various film franchises decorating each entrance of the park retail store, Studio Emporium .

The hallway leads into a large atrium-like space before opening into the outdoor ‘hub’ of the park – the fountain with the Skyworlds logo. To the left of this hub is a Hong Kong café restaurant named Han’s Cha Chaan Teng .

Eagle Mountain

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park Photo Tour 2 Eagle Mountain

Directly in front of the hub is the Eagle Mountain zone, which was previously themed to the Sons of Anarchy Fox TV series. After the legal settlement, the tie-up was dropped in favour of a more generic biker culture theme. This zone has just one main attraction, Mad Ramp Peak – Full Throttle Racing , a dueling ‘power coaster’. However, the track layout looks more like a ‘Test Track’ ride than a typical roller coaster.

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park Photo Tour 2 Eagle Mountain Mad Ramp Peak Full Throttle Racing ride building

I thought Eagle Mountain is a nicely themed area with the rollercoaster tracks weaving through the zone. From what I can see of the attraction from outside, I think it would be a fun ride. Too bad it was not ready during this soft opening phase.

Classic Burgers is the only food outlet here, and the Freedom Shop located at the attraction exit sells mainly biker and Harley Davidson themed merchandise. Underneath the attraction is a tunnel that leads to another zone, Andromeda Base .

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park Photo Tour 3 Rio fountain

There are 3 zones themed to (now-defunct) Blue Sky Studios properties. One of them is based on Rio (2011), which in this park is an L-shaped area with 2 attractions: Samba Gliders and Rio Carnaval Chaos – a suspended roller coaster and a turntable ‘teacup’ style ride respectively.

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park Photo Tour 3 Rio zone street buildings

Sadly, the Carnaval Chaos ride was a disappointment. The ride does not spin fast enough and moving from one turntable to another was not quick enough to create “near-miss” moments for the ride to feel exciting.

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park Photo Tour 3 Rio zone Carnaval chaos

The second Blue Sky zone is themed to the 2013 animation titled Epic. Theming here attempts to create a perspective illusion: as you walk deeper into the zone, the sets gradually ‘enlarges’, and you will soon find yourself among oversized flora and props. This zone houses 2 attractions: Epic Voyage to Moonhaven , an indoor boat ride, and the Epic Hummingbird Flyers spinner ride.

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park Photo Tour 4 Epic zone Epic Voyage to Moonhaven building

Despite being placed in a corner, I feel that the Epic zone is easily the best themed and most immersive. The dark ride is charming, and it is impressive that its large show building is well-hidden as part of design.

The Epic Hummingbird Flyers spinner ride is interesting as it mimics a similar ride in Universal Islands of Adventure in Orlando, Florida, with riders trying to dodge water squirts as the vehicles spin.

The last and largest Blue Sky zone is themed to the Ice Age film franchise. This area is framed by a large mountain range, with glaciers and rockwork filling out the zone. Visitors can look forward to its main attraction, Ice Age: Expedition Thin Ice , which is a trackless dark ride within the mountain. Other attractions include Acorn Adventure : a mine-train roller coaster weaving through the mountain, Sid’s Rock n Slide : a flat roller-skater ride, and also a large open playground for the little ones: Mammoth Fun Zone .

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park Photo Tour 5 Ice Age zone Acorn Adventure waterfall

Buck’s Café will offer visitors with local cuisine, while other snack choices are available at food carts Crash and Eddie’s Frozen Treats and Peaches’ Cocoa Concoctions . The Cavern Treasures at the exit to Acorn Adventure will meet your shopping needs. There’s also a small theatre in the zone that hosts shows starring the Ice Age characters.

At the heart of all 3 Blue Sky zones is the Blue Sky Carousel , a two-tiered merry-go-round featuring all the Blue Sky characters.

Andromeda Base

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park Photo Tour 6 Andromeda Base SFX Coaster Track exterior

The imposing Andromeda Base features a yet-to-be- renamed SFX rollercoaster with indoor and outdoor sections. Originally, this was to be themed to Aliens vs Predator. In front of this coaster are 2 flat rides: Alpha Fighter Pilots , an Air Race spinner ride by Zamperla, and the Terraform Tower Challenge drop tower.

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park Photo Tour 6 Andromeda Base Alpha Fighter Pilots ride

If you want some hands-on thrills, try the Boot Camp Training – a ropes course with a zipline ‘coaster’ segment. Until the rollercoaster opens in 2023, there are no other facilities apart from 2 quick service kiosks: Sergeant Sully’s Juice Boosters and EXO Grab N Go .

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park Photo Tour 6 Andromeda Base theming gate metallics

Theming wise, this zone feels rather generic with metallic accents all around trying to conjure a “spacey” futuristic vibe. The saving grace in this place is the ropes course which was fun, but short, and had a line all day. Without the rollercoaster, the other flat rides are just not unique enough to carry the zone, as such rides are very common in amusement parks around the world.

Liberty Lane

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park Photo Tour 7 Liberty Lane leading to Andromeda Base

Leading out from Andromeda Base is a small alley named Liberty Lane, loosely themed to San Francisco. The only attraction here is Invasion of the Planet of the Apes , supposedly a dark ride. Apart from building facades for photo taking, the only other highlights here would be the food carts Chips and Dips, Golden Gate Garage, and Redwoods Trading Post , which is the gift shop at exit of the Apes attraction.

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park Photo Tour 7 Liberty Lane building facades

As Liberty Lane’s marquee attraction is not open, I must reserve judgement for my overall opinion. This is a very small area but well-themed, as the buildings’ height block out the rest of the park.

Robots Rivet Town

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park Photo Tour 8 Robots Rivet Town zone overview

This is a very small, enclosed zone themed to Robots animated film, which you have to enter via Liberty Lane. Rivet Town offers 2 flat rides are stacked on each other: Bigweld’s Zeppelins and Rivet Town Roller . This whimsical zone has small kiosks selling food (Aunt Fanny’s Confectionery) and merchandise (Flathead Floyd’s Mart) at the town’s entrance/ exit.

Central Park

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park Photo Tour 9 Central Park zone birds eye view

Lastly, we’ve come to Central Park, which is inspired by New York. There is a large fountain and stage in the middle where both daytime and nighttime shows are held with a screen as the backdrop. This is also the only covered area (other than the entrance plaza) as it is also the second entrance to the SkyWorlds theme park.

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park Photo Tour 9 Central Park zone fountain stage

Attractions here include Independence Day: Defiance , a flying theatre ride, ESD Global Defender , a Technical Park Aerobat (aka Enterprise-style flat ride), and Night at the Museum: Midnight Mayhem , a trackless shooting dark ride like Disney Parks’ Toy Story Midway Mania attractions.

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park Photo Tour 9 Central Park zone Independence Day Defiance ride building entrance

The Galaxy Store here is a smaller version of the Studio Emporium, while 2 other shops in the area are linked to attractions: ESD Exchange and Museum Store . There are several dining options here: Trattoria Il Lago, Cosmic Café, Starlet’s Pizza, Lakeside Market , with Il Lago being the only sit-down restaurant. Harry Ramsden’s Fish and Chips is an outdoor kiosk with sitting areas flanking the ESD flat ride and fountain.

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park Photo Tour 9 Central Park zone Trattoria Il Lago

Grab a quite bite from other quick service kiosks along this colorful lane: Jetpack Coffee, Orbits Fried Dough and FUHU Shack . There are also carnival games in this covered area of Central Park for those feeling lucky.

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park Photo Tour 9 Central Park zone near fountain stage

Central Park feels haphazard as the zone tries to incorporate rather disparate attractions: The ESD flat ride and Independence Day attractions sharing a similar theme, and then we have the Night At The Museum dark ride based on New York City.

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park Photo Tour 9 Central Park zone Independence Day Defiance ride interior

The Night At The Museum shooting dark ride was a disappointment. Though I appreciate the queue theming and the trackless aspect of it, the ride itself is very lightly themed, with only dark curtains separating the various screens for the interactive shooting segments, and blank concrete walls for transition. It was a letdown and I’ve been on better rides at Legoland. The 3D glasses were also a poor fit. Nonetheless, enjoy some photos from this attraction’s queue and load platform:

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park – Overall Impressions and Review

As an avid theme park goer who has travelled to various major international theme parks, I think the park has managed to squeeze much into the small space it has been given, with a relatively good mix of attractions. Although many of the marquee attractions are not open yet, I must say what they have on offer are comparable to Universal Parks or Busch Gardens.

I think this is a nice park that has replaced the old Genting Outdoor Theme Park, which is mainly a lake with sporadic attractions around it. SkyWorld’s theming was of high quality overall and the full line-up of attractions is compelling enough for both families and thrill seekers. However, as many of the marquee attractions (2 dark rides and 2 coasters) are still not ready, going now may seem less value-for-money. However, the wet weather and low crowds may trump the otherwise incomplete attraction roster.

In terms of food, pricing is reasonable for a place like this, and quality is on par with other major theme parks. Souvenirs available in stores looks limited – I suspect the park is trying to phase out those labelled ‘Fox Movie World’ and bring in the unique Skyworlds merchandise. Pricing is likewise reasonable.

I think a repeat visit when all attractions are up would be a better gauge of both the quality of the theme park and its appeal in the region, pandemic notwithstanding.

Visiting Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park soon? What you need to know

Soft opening phase.

As the park is still in soft opening phase (until further notice), some attractions are still in ‘technical rehearsal’ or just not open yet. Do keep this in mind when you make plans to visit. The soft opening phase may be extended up to months ahead.

Currently, the park is operating at a reduced capacity during this soft opening phase. With opening hours from 11AM to 6PM, a typical visitor gets only 7 hours of park touring time.

Weather can make or break your day at this park. Genting Highlands, the resort where this park is built, boasts to be 1,690m above sea level, and high above the Klang valley. As such it is prone to cloud cover, rain, and the foggy ‘Silent Hill’ effect. Much of the park is uncovered, with only a small area being under cover à la Universal Studios Singapore’s New York area.

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park Tips and Tricks Foggy Weather

Rain and Rainy Day Guarantee

Rain gear is essential to enjoy the park during inclement weather and during my visit disposable vinyl ponchos were on sale at the park for a mere RM10. Fortunately, during this soft opening phase, the park offers a rainy day guarantee whereby affected guests may be offered a free return visit within 12 months from the day the guarantee is activated (at discretion of the park). You will be notified via the Genting SkyWorlds mobile app , and you can show the original ticket invoice to the guest services counter for issuance of new tickets.

Genting SkyWorlds App

This Official App is essential to your visit, as it will be both your digital ticket and guide to the park – including park map, attraction wait times, show times, and more. It also offers other important services such as Virtual Queue booking and Photographer services. You will also receive notifications on merchandise sales and the Rainy Day Guarantee, if it is activated.

Free Wi-Fi access is provided within the park (but not outside, such as in Genting SkyAvenue), so that guests can easily access services on the App, and of course, post their memories online.

Genting SkyWorld’s Queue booking system: Virtual Queue (VQ) reservations

Akin to the Disney Fastpass (now Genie+ in US parks) and Universal Express, Genting SkyWorlds offers a queue booking system accessible from its official app. Currently, each park ticket includes (up to 6) VQ reservation slots during soft opening . Use the App to scan and link your park tickets to use VQ reservations. All rides are included in the VQ system, although the service may or may not be required to get on the ride. During my visit, only Samba Flyers require a VQ reservation.

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park Tips and Tricks Virtual Queue Reservation System Information

Park Entrances

The main entrance of the park is accessible from Genting SkyAvenue , the large shopping complex linking the Awana Skyway station (for those arriving from the Genting Premium Outlets and Kuala Lumpur) and the older sections of the resort, namely Genting Grand Hotel, Highlands Hotel and the rethemed SkyWorlds Hotel.

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park Tips and Tricks Park Entrance Plaza Layout

Due to space constraints, there is not really a lot of space in the entrance area for group photos, especially in front of the decorative fountain. In this area you can find the typical ticket counters, guest services counter, and information boards bearing park opening timings, park map and unavailable attractions. There is an alternative entrance accessible from SkyAvenue itself right below the Skyway station although it is currently not in use.

Getting to Genting SkyWorlds at Genting Highlands

There are many ways of getting to Genting Highlands from Singapore. These include taking a direct coach (there are many companies providing this service), taking a flight (which requires many transfers) or self driving. Check out Resorts World Genting’s website for more information.

Genting SkyWorlds: New Theme Park With 9 Unique Zones For Adventure-filled Trips 6,000ft Above Sea Level

genting highland theme park essay

New theme park in Genting Highlands

When we speak of theme parks, many of us often fall back to the idea of an adventurous trip to a place with a single theme. But now, you can visit a theme park that’s designed after some of your favourite cartoons and movies with a combination of retail, dining and entertainment for a fun-filled adventure.

Situated on the sprawling hills of the Titiwangsa mountain range, about 6,000 feet above sea level, is Genting SkyWorlds . This theme park offers thrill-seeking Malaysians the chance to experience exhilarating rides and themed worlds as well as breathtaking sky views.

Here are some of the best rides and attractions at the new theme park.

26 rides and attractions for a fun-filled adventure

Genting SkyWorlds main entrance

This outdoor theme park is developed across 26 acres of land on Genting Highlands, featuring 26 rides and attractions that were designed after nine movie and adventure-inspired ‘worlds’, or zones:

Andromeda Base

Central park.

  • Eagle Mountain
  • Liberty Lane
  • Robots Rivet Town
  • Studio Plaza

Genting SkyWorlds - Studio Plaza

Each world has a mixture of rides, photo spots, themed environments, food and beverage outlets, and retail shops. Your journey will begin at Studio Plaza , an art-deco prelude lined with cafes and shops, which paves the way into the themed worlds.

We recommend heading first to Central Park within Genting SkyWorlds.

Being the largest of all the worlds, it offers a wide selection of rides and attractions such as Night at the Museum: Midnight Mayhem – an action-packed 3D interactive ride, ESD Global Defender – a hybrid aerospace fighter swing ride, and Independence Day: Defiance – a ‘flying theatre’ for a space escapade.

Genting SkyWorlds - NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM

Central Park also has a Natural History Museum, with a massive dinosaur fossil at the entrance and artefacts of tribal communities on display, and Lake of Dreams where visitors can enjoy a stunning fountain show paired with lively music and vibrant lighting effects.

Central Park water fountain

If you’re up for more challenging rides, then Andromeda Base is highly recommended as the rides in this zone take visitors on a wildly exhilarating journey.

Theme park rides at Genting

The Terraform Tower Challenge is a thrilling and terrifying drop tower ride for adrenaline junkies, while Boot Camp Training puts you through a physical obstacle course.

Theme park rides at Genting

Alpha Fighter Pilots is another ride here where you can take an adventurous spin on 360° multi-directional rotating jets.

Family-friendly worlds: Ice Age, Epic and Rio

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park - Ice Age

There’s also Sid’s Rock ‘N’ Slide – a spinning log ride – and Mammoth Fun Zone at the Ice Age movie-themed zone for family-friendly rides and attractions.

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park - Epic

We had fun on the Epic Hummingbird Flyers in the Epic zone – a spinning ride with flower and hummingbird seats that immerses you in a fairy garden modelled after the movie of same name.

This world is located at the corner of the theme park, so it offers great sky views of Genting Highlands too.

Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park - Rio

For those looking for something cheery, Carnaval Chaos! at Rio, is worth checking out. This ride lets you spin into a whirlwind of fun in teacups adorned with colourful parrots, all against the backdrop of artsy Brazilian-style buildings.

The Blue Sky Carousel at the heart of this world that’ll excite children, as it features rides with characters from all three animated movie worlds – Epic, Ice Age and Rio.

Snack on delicious food along the way

If you think Genting SkyWorlds is another theme park similar to the ones that you have been to, then think again. Besides its variety of exciting rides, there are plenty of quirky and interesting foods to try out at the park as well.

Food stall at Genting SkyWorlds

Each zone has its own food stalls or cafes that serves various dishes. There are local cuisine offerings such as nasi lemak, laksa, and nasi kandar as well as international foods – pizzas, hotdogs, shawarmas, tacos, and fish and chips.

SkyTub combo meal

We tried the Truffle Aioli Chicken Burger SkyTub Combo ( RM35 ) from Classic Burgers at Eagle Mountain. The burger was made up of soft, potato buns and a juicy chicken patty, paired with a special truffle aioli sauce, melted cheese, pickled cucumber and onions, giving a burst of flavours in the mouth.

This set comes with a soft drink and potato chips, served on a portable plastic cup with a tray-like lid and a straw, making it a convenient grab-and-go option for visitors.

Food stall at Genting SkyWorlds

There are sweat options too, such as churros from Orbits Fried Dough at Central Park, doughnuts and eclairs from Aunt Fanny’s Confectionery at Robots Rivet Town, and ice-cream and ais kacang from Crash and Eddie’s Frozen Treats at Ice Age.

Genting SkyWorlds - desserts

We recommend getting The Epic Signature Bubble Waffle ( RM18 ) and The Epic Classic Waffle ( RM18 ) from Mub and Grub’s Big Bites in the Epic world. The waffles are topped with a choice of ice cream, sweet sauce, crunchy candies and fresh fruit for a unique look and flavour.

Food stall at Genting SkyWorlds

Visitors can customise their own waffle set when placing orders as there’s a selection of different sauces and toppings to choose from. So feel free to mix and match the toppings to create a sweet treat that suits your liking.

Central Park walkway

Beyond its rides and attractions, Genting SkyWorlds is also filled with colourful decorations, sculptures and high-tech lighting.

Almost every corner is picturesque, making the park an ideal place for taking Insta-worthy photos despite some restrictions – taking photos or recording videos are prohibited during certain rides for safety concerns.

The different themes of the worlds make a trip to the park a diverse experience too, one that is accompanied by complimentary background music and sounds.

Genting SkyWorlds

Epic, for one, has giant flower and bird sculptures dotted around its enclave while Central Park has a colourful walkaway where you can stop by to take photos.

Genting SkyWorlds photo spots

In the world of Rio, there is a beautiful water fountain accompanied by colourful buildings that replicate the vibrant architecture in Salvador, Brazil.

Genting SkyWorlds photo spots

The Studio Plaza at the main entrance is also a favoured selfie spot for guests. Here, you can take pictures with interior decor inspired by the golden era of cinema, or the colourful water fountain topped with the Genting SkyWorlds logo just outside its doors.

Buy souvenirs at selected stores and play games

Souvenir shop at theme park

If you’re looking to buy souvenirs and gifts along your journey at Genting SkyWorlds, then browse through the various gift shops such as Museum Store from Night At The Museum and Photo Kiosk from Ice Age that sell theme-specific gifts and souvenirs.

Photo booth at theme park

At the entrance, there’s Studio Emporium , the largest souvenir store within the theme park. Trawl for mementos and special gifts such as official movie merch and photo memorabilia, among others.

Candy shop at Genting Skyworlds

You also get to pick and mix your favourite Hershey’s chocolates, and buy cotton candy from a fully automated vending machine, at Sweet Delights presented by Candy Party . This shop sells an array of confectionaries loved by both children and adults.

Games at theme park

When you’re at Central Park, remember to stop by for some carnival-style games to win prizes such as teddy bears and unicorn toys along the colourful walkway. There are designated kiosks near the game stations for you to register a card and top up credit to play the games.

How to get here

There are several ways to get to this theme park. Visitors can either drive, travel by bus, take cable cars or use e-hailing services. Genting SkyWorlds is about an hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur. Those planning to drive can park their vehicles at various locations around Resorts World Genting and Genting Highlands Premium Outlets.

If you’re skipping the drive to the top of the hill, you can park at Awana SkyCentral and take a cable car (Awana SkyWay) to the summit. This method also works if you’re opting to get here by bus – you can get down at the Awana Bus Terminal for a cable car ride to the theme park.

The cable car ride takes around 10 minutes to reach the SkyAvenue Station. You will then need to go on foot by following the wayfinding directions to the main entrance of Genting SkyWorlds. While going up the hill in the gondola lifts, you can enjoy the spectacular mountain views of Genting Highlands and a bird’s-eye view of the theme park.

There are also buses available to Genting SkyWorlds from various locations throughout Klang Valley such as KL Sentral, Gombak, Shah Alam and Klang Sentral. For the latest updates on bus availability, do check Resorts World Genting’s website .

For e-hailing services, there are three pick-up and drop-off points, located at Genting Grand Hotel, First World Hotel and the Ground Transportation Hub.

Guide to Genting with kids: Our top tips on where to stay & things to do in Genting Highlands

Looking for some year-end travel inspo with the school holidays coming up? We recently checked out Genting Highlands, Malaysia on a road trip with kids! From theme parks to strawberry picking and more, here's what you can do in Genting

If a white Christmas isn’t in the cards for you this year, there’s still a chance to stay chilly without having to go too far – enter, Genting Highlands! Located just off Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia some 6,000ft above sea level at its highest point, Genting promises cool weather, beautiful mountain views and the best part: tons of things to do with kids! I recently did a road trip to Genting with two young kids in tow and can safely say it’s totally kid-approved.

How to get to Genting

genting cable car awana skyway gondola review

Singapore to Genting

5 hours by car or coach.

Car: If you’re driving into Malaysia, the trip from Singapore to Genting can take about five hours depending on traffic conditions. Once you enter Johor, you’ll want to head on the North-South Express Highway, take the exit at Gombak toll, then take the exit at 803A-Genting Sempah which leads you to Genting Highlands.

Coach: There are a number of bus services from Singapore that go to Genting Highlands and will often include two rest stops along the way. We took WTS Travel ‘s coach from Woodlands to Resorts World Genting , which costs about $75 per person. Other coach services with similar routes include KKKL Travel & Tours and Transtar , available for booking directly or via websites like Klook and Redbus . Do note that coach services usually have morning pickup times in the wee hours, some as early as 5:30am – but this also means you’ll get to Genting around lunch time with lots of time for exploring afterwards!

HoneyKids tip: Make sure to strap the kids in their car seats, as long drives usually mean antsy kiddos and you won’t want them trying to get up in a moving car or bus! Pack a ton of snacks and activities to keep them busy. Slime, playdoh and colouring activities have worked well for us. Try not to let them read or have too much screen time in case they get motion sickness (puke in a moving vehicle? Not pretty, trust me!).

Flight to Kuala Lumpur > 1 hour taxi or coach to Genting

Not driving, and want to avoid taking a coach from Singapore so you can start the journey at a more reasonable hour? You can take a short flight to KL, then flag a taxi or coach to Genting which takes about one hour.

Getting around Genting

The main transport hub in Genting is Awana Bus Terminal, located at the base of Genting Highlands. All bus services dock here, and there’s also a large carpark for those who choose to drive to Genting.

Taxi: There are a number of taxis and private hire drivers stationed at the bus terminal. Some drive larger cars or vans, which are useful for those traveling as a family. Price-wise there’s often a flat rate for certain destinations, so make sure to agree on this prior to boarding. We’ve also had luck hiring one as our driver for the whole trip, so there’s always room to discuss multiple trips during the span of your stay for ease of movement.

Cable car: Getting to SkyAvenue, which is at the highest point of Genting Highlands with a large mall, hotels and theme parks, takes just 10 minutes via Awana SkyWay – Genting’s main cable car operator. It’s directly connected to the bus terminal. Tickets start from just RM10 (~S$2.80) and there’s also the option of booking the glass-floor gondola if you want to see the rainforest beneath your feet!

Shuttle bus: Many hotels in Genting offer shuttle bus services to Awana Bus Terminal (which is also where the Genting Highlands Premium Outlets are), so make sure to check with your hotel’s front desk on their bus schedule.

Weather in Genting

genting weather

If you’ve been waiting for the perfect time to bust out those cardigans and light sweaters… here’s your chance! The temperature in Genting ranges from about 16ºC to 23ºC, so think cool, breezy aircon weather. That said, it can get hot during midday when the sun is out in full force so it’s best to have a light layer underneath. If you’re particularly warm-blooded and can withstand moderately cool temperatures, you might be fine with just a T-shirt on.

Where to stay in Genting

Resorts world awana.

Resorts World Awana is one of the few hotels located at the base of Genting Highlands. The journey here from Awana Bus Terminal takes just about 15 minutes (and some coach services may drop you off here directly if you request it!). We were hosted for a stay here recently and highly recommend it for families! The Superior Deluxe Room we stayed in had all the creature comforts we needed, including two comfortable queen beds, a TV, bathroom with a hot shower and a balcony with beautiful views of the surrounding area.

The highlight here would be the restaurants, which all had great views, amazing ambience and delicious food options. The tastefully decorated AYU Awana overlooks the resort’s heated swimming pools, and features a special smokehouse and grill menu – try the truffle fries! You can also chill out at the bar with drink in hand or choose to sit at the poolside lounge. Ever had hotpot in the mountains? Awana Garden is where it’s at, boasting a farm-to-table menu of fresh produce and delectable meats. Not forgetting JOM Makan, the hotel’s buffet breakfast restaurant, made up of a sprawling dining hall offering breathtaking mountain views. Every restaurant had more than enough options for both kids and adults, so you don’t have to rely on just fish & chips or chicken nuggets for the little ones!

Resorts World Awana also has a whole host of kids’ programmes under their Chief Experience Officer (CEO) programme , which entitles kids to a CEO Onboarding Kit. In it you’ll find a CEO passport, colouring activities, stickers and badges for little ones to sport while they try the various activities in the resort. The kid focus starts right from check-in, with friendly staff on hand keeping kids occupied with themed craft activities while parents check in. During our stay we got to go on a garden tour where we looked into the hives of stingless bees and even harvested their honey by hand! The resort also offers guided hikes through the Awana Trail where you can get up close to never-before-seen natural wonders and even encounter wild Siamangs, tropical birds and endangered plants. Rates start from about S$67 per night .

Genting SkyWorlds Hotel

If you want to stay right in the heart of the action, consider Genting SkyWorlds Hotel. It’s located right in front of the Genting Skyworlds theme park (more on that below) and has cute kid-friendly interiors that will appeal to families with little ones. We’re talking bunk beds, cool wall decorations and kitschy details! Staying here means everything is within walking distance, including the two theme parks in Genting, SkyWay Avenue mall and the Awana SkyWay cable car. Rates start from about S$92 per night .

SCAPES Hotel

genting scapes hotel

SCAPES is one of the newer hotels in Genting. On a previous trip, we booked a stay in the two-bedroom suite which allowed us to be in the same unit as a family while giving our helper her own room for privacy. The hotel buffet breakfast is great, and we liked the on-site playground for kids. The pool here is unheated though so it may be too cold for some kiddos. Rates start from about S$58 per night .

Best attractions & things to do with kids in Genting

Genting skyworlds theme park.

Want to tire the kids out with a day of thrills? Genting SkyWorlds is the spot for a day of jam-packed fun featuring rides and characters from Ice Age, Rio, Epic, Planet of The Apes and more! My four-year-old had a blast here despite being under the minimum height requirement for a few of the ‘scarier’ rides. She didn’t mind, as she still got to ride Epic Hummingbird Flyers, the Voyage to Moonhaven water boat ride, Blue Sky Carousel, Rio Carnaval Chaos teacup ride and a few others. Mum and dad took turns trying out the more thrilling rides like Samba Gliders and Sid’s Rock ‘N’ Slide – this meant riding alone but we each still had fun! Sadly my one-year-old had to sit out of every ride, but we were so glad to discover the Mammoth Fun Zone playground with slides, a climbing net, monkey bars and even a small water play area.

HoneyKids tip: Download the Genting SkyWorlds app before you go, so you have all the theme park info in the palm of your hand. Most rides are available by walk-in, but some require joining the virtual queue – this helps to control the crowd and lets you ride without having to wait in line for too long. You can also use the app to find restaurants, nearby bathrooms, baby changing rooms and prayer rooms in the theme park. No stroller? No problem! The theme park offers affordable rental of single and double strollers so you can pack light.

Admission to Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park starts from RM151 (~S$43) for adults and RM128 (~S$36) for kids 90-110cm tall.

Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park

genting things to do kids skytropolis indoor theme park

Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park is located at First World Plaza, connected to Skyway Avenue mall, and boasts over 20 rides. You can choose to pay per ride, or get the unlimited ride pass so you and the fam can play to your heart’s content! Younger kids can ride the carousel, flying spaceship ride, train ride and teacups while older kids and adults will love the fast-paced Sky Towers or Power Surge. There’s also bumper cars here and a number of carnival games!

The 1-Day Unlimited Ride Pass starts from RM65 (~S$18) while individual rides start from RM10 (~S2.80).

Genting Strawberry Leisure Farm

genting strawberry leisure farms review malaysia

If you’d like to try strawberry picking, check out Genting Strawberry Leisure Farm. Entry is incredibly affordable, which gives you access to the strawberry picking area where you can harvest your own strawberries and bring home (after they’ve been weighed and paid for). There’s also a slide and a beautiful flower garden here, making it a nice relaxing attraction to walk through for photo ops with the fam. Admission to Genting Strawberry Leisure Farm starts from RM8 (~S$2.30) for adults and RM5 (~S$1.40) for kids.

Shopping in Genting

Genting highlands premium outlets.

genting highlands premium outlets

Want to snag a good designer deal? Genting Highlands Premium Outlets (connected to Awana Bus Terminal) is home to the outlet stores of Braun Buffel, Coach, Kate Spade, Longchamp, Timberland, Salvatore Ferragamo and more. We also love checking it out for kids’ stores like Hamley’s, Cotton On Kids and Poney. Be prepared to spend the day here if you’re big on shopping – it’s shop after shop of deals and deals galore!

SkyAvenue is like the ION Orchard of Genting. This mega mall has everything from designer boutiques to high street brands, affordable eats and exclusive fine dining restaurants. They also have decent baby changing and nursing rooms here, which are always appreciated!

So that’s Genting, folks! Make sure to let us know if you found this guide helpful, and we wish you fun family travels ahead!

Visitors can buy tickets for the theme park either at the ticket booth on the day of admission. Or online through the Genting Skyworlds website.

Please note that tickets sold at the ticket booth are more expensive and cost RM170 for adults and children over 110 cm.

To get the most bang for your buck, you should buy your tickets online through the Genting Skyworlds website at RM151 per person.

Entrance To Genting Skyworlds

Using the Genting Skyworlds App

The Genting Skyworlds Theme Park App is a handy app that allows users to reserve 4 virtual queues (VQ) for popular rides. This way, you avoid long queues and shorten waiting times. While having absolute control over the order of the rides you want to experience.

If you buy more than one ticket (e.g. for couples, families or friends), you should create a “ group ” for your entourage.

Once you create your group, you can pre-book the next ride in advance, depending on the time slot that suits you best.

You must scan each QR code in the app but scanning the codes can be tricky:

Because the QR codes that appear after purchasing online are closely spaced. And if you scan the same code more than once, it will not register.

Tip: To make sure that the scanning of codes is successful, check that the total number of pax (on the right) matches the number of guests for the day.

Customer service at the park are well trained to answer questions you might have.

To download the app, visit the Google Playstore (for Android) or the iOS App Store (for Apple devices).

Independence Day Motion Master sets the tone for an extraordinary outing!

Queing For Independence Day ride

Recruits (us!) are sent on an urgent mission to battle the aliens in Saturn and prevent them from advancing to Earth.

Briefing by Commander Before The Independence Day Ride

During the ride, there is even an alien that threatens to break through the glass enclosure! Besides this, there are several jaw-dropping dips and near-misses with towers.

Alien Enclosure Before Entering The Independence Day Ride

At the end of the ride, passengers gave applause – proof that the Impendence Day ride is impressive!

Night At The Museum

Next, we made our way to the Night At The Museum. In this 3D arcade game ride, we board a robot vacuum cleaner-like cart with two mini cannons on each side.

Entrance to Night At The Museum Ride

As the carriage spins, battle attacks from prehistoric warriors and relive parts of the movie. Compare your score with your companion’s at the end to see who earned the most points!

Epic Voyage To Moonhaven

If you’re game to get wet, the Epic Voyage To Moonhaven is a must-try! It’s uphill and off the beaten path but is a ride you should definitely try out!

The friendly ride warden warned us that our feet, face, and pants would get wet, but that didn’t deter us.

PS: You might want to have a raincoat on for this ride.

The calm ride with cute characters takes a surprising turn after the first 20 seconds. We got a good splash on our faces and pants!

There are talking snails, butterflies, and garden characters from the movie. All while the carriage inches up a steep 30-meter hike!

We’re not giving away any spoilers here – you’ll have to experience the ride for yourself 😉

Invasion Of The Planet of the Apes

Invasion of the Planet of the Apes is another exciting motion master ride. It deserves a standing ovation! It is unlike traditional motion master rides with a typical cinema layout.

Briefing Before Invasion of Planet of the Apes Ride

The experience is very immersive. 3D glasses magnify the life-like images. You will be dodging shots and attacks on a surreal battlefield!

Between picturesque setups are interesting cart-like stalls selling carnival food and snacks.

The Golden Gate Garage is a popular crowd-pleaser. They sell hotdogs and sausages with different condiments and meats.

Across the street from this booth is Chips and Dips . This is another food booth that visitors love for crispy purple potato French fries. And crunchy balls in wholesome sauces!

Typical Food From Chips n Dips Stall At Liberty Lane, Genting Skyworlds Theme Park

For a sit-down meal, Legend’s Café and Han’s Cha Chan Teng offer Asian delicacies. If you’re craving Western, Asian, and fusion dishes, stop by Bucks Café in the Ice Age Zone. This makes for a relaxing retreat for both taste buds and aching feet.

There is even fine-dining Italian cuisine at Trattoria II Lago . Which serves delicious pasta, pizzas, and risottos overlooking the Lake of Dreams .

Be sure to dine there between 2 pm and 4.30 pm to witness a spectacular water show at the lake. It’s soothing to watch the artistic water fountains dance to the tune of energetic music.

Lake of Dreams At Genting Highland Outdoor Theme Park

On the whole, expect the food at the theme park to be more expensive than in the outside world.

But the quality of the food is good and the novelty creations (like Chips and Dip) are worth the splurge!

Introduction

Genting Highlands Malaysia is a city known as the ‘Fun City Above the Cloud’, as it is quite similar to Las Vegas which isn’t actually all that close. The primary draw is that, Genting is one of the hotspot in Malaysia where you can gamble legally. Whereas, there is also a theme park to keep the kids amused. The atmosphere located at that area is cooler than the steamy lowlands.

The cool air makes it an exhilarating experience to enjoy many outdoor rides. Whether taking leisure drives in the Antique car or experiencing the adrenaline pumping Space Shot, it’s a wonderful and magical adventure of fun and excitement for the family.

The casino at Genting offers a host of exciting international-level games, among the most popular games like for an example, Roulette, Baccarat, Blackjack, and Caribbean Stud Poker. Jackpot machines are one of the tourist attractions too. International class shows and live entertainment provide the accompanying glamour.

Genting Highlands resort has approximately six hotels which is, First World Hotel, Genting Hotel, Highlands Hotel, Theme Park Hotel, Resort Hotel, Maxims Hotel and Awana Genting Highlands Golf & Country Resort at the mid-hill which is total up offering up to approximately 10,000 hotel rooms. The prices for these hotels are approximately affordable where First World Hotel is one of the cheapest among all.

The story of Genting, is that most Malaysians will recognize it as synonymous with the rise of its namesake Hill Resort and Genting Highlands Resort. Many may not have truly appreciated the mammoth task involved in its construction and the vast resources and reserves mobilized to ensure what that has proven today to be an unprecedented successful in resort development.

In the beginning stages, the idea of a hill resort was brought up upon by late Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong amidst the crisp air of Cameron Highlands in 1964. Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong was then working on a hydro-electric power project at the popular hill resort, which is patronized mostly by the British colonials seeking cool refuges from the tropical heat, when he foresaw a prosperous Malaysia of the future desiring a cool mountain holiday resort within the reach of all Malaysians, this is when the idea was brought up.

Besides that, on 18 Aug 1965, a technical and construction team began the task that would take four years to complete the access road which is from Genting Sempah towards the peak of Gunung Ulu Kali. By ensuring the sound and prompt construction of the hotel-resort, Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong has to spend all of his time, capital and resources, including the reserves of his family company, Kien Huat Bhd towards the making of his so called "dream resort".

Furthermore, since after the opening of their first hotel in 1971, Genting Highlands Resort has continued to grow from strength-to-strength. Whereas, the development of that area has continued to this present day to enhance Genting Highlands Resort as one of the premier holiday destination in the Malaysia/Asia while ensuring that the natural beauty of the rain forest is taken care of.

In 1997, Genting Highlands Resort further boosted its facility attraction by building a transportation service called "Genting Skyway cable car system" that provides a 3.38 km transport towards the hilltop. Genting Skyway is also recognized as the "World's Fastest Mono Cable Car System" in 2002 with a maximum speed of 21.6 km per hour and the "Longest Cable Car in Malaysia and towards SEA".http://www.genting.com/images/history4a.jpg

Cover Story: Genting Highlands continues to attract development

This article first appeared in City & Country, The Edge Malaysia Weekly on October 23, 2023 - October 29, 2023

Genting Highlands, a popular highland holiday destination about 40 minutes’ drive from Kuala Lumpur, is often associated with shopping (Genting Highlands Premium Outlet), entertainment (casino, outdoor and indoor theme parks, restaurants) and being a “cool” family getaway.

In addition to being a tourist draw, the location has also attracted property developers, which hope to cater to tourists who may want to buy a property for a holiday home or for investment purposes. These companies have built residential and commercial properties along the main road that takes visitors to and from the hilltop.

Knight Frank Malaysia group managing director Keith Ooi says that visitor numbers to Resorts World Genting increased more than twofold from 7.1 million in 2021 to 22.2 million in 2022, according to the Genting Malaysia Bhd Annual Report.

“The report foresees growth in the number of visitors as Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park has officially opened its doors to the public and is set to be a crowd-puller. Genting Malaysia Bhd expects Genting SkyWorlds to drive Resorts World Genting visitor arrivals to 30 million per annum in the long term,” he adds.

According to Savills Malaysia group managing director Datuk Paul Khong, “The latest update on Genting Highlands is that the secondary market is still performing well, with prices staying relatively stable, and we see several new developments including Tropicana WindCity, Genting Xintiandi and King’s Park already breaking ground.

genting highland theme park essay

“Given its strategic location, in close proximity to KL, this may be the ideal hybrid residential place for city dwellers [who want to] live in Gohtong Jaya, commuting daily [from their home] in the hills but working and playing in Kuala Lumpur.

“Developers are already pushing to build Gohtong Jaya into a large self-sustaining township for local residents to reside permanently. In line with this, large-scale investments and integrated projects are already happening in Gohtong Jaya, offering alternative lifestyle choices,” he adds.

According to CBRE | WTW group managing director Tan Ka Leong, “The introduction of new attractions and amenities, especially by prominent developers, will further enhance Genting Highlands’ appeal as a favoured destination for both residents and tourists, resulting in positive spillover demand for residential and commercial properties.”

Meanwhile, existing developments have performed steadily as property values in Genting Highlands remain stable.

“Overall, the secondary property market is seen to be relatively stable with no major movements either way. As per transactions shown in Table 1, residential projects, except for Midhills, recorded a positive compound annual growth rate (in 2021-2023),” says Khong.

genting highland theme park essay

“For older stock completed before 2015, Kempas Apartments and Mawar Apartments both recorded some nominal growth.”

He adds that newer units completed after 2015 are trading between RM825 and RM900 psf, depending on project and unit size. Meanwhile, transactions at Geo38 Residence and Vista Residences indicate a positive recovery but with no substantial increases. Windmill Upon Hills continues to do well, Khong says.

According to CBRE | WTW’s Tan, “Overall, the property market remains relatively robust in Genting Highlands. It is well-known as a favoured tourist spot, consequently driving demand for accommodation and other types of properties.

“Moreover, with ongoing developments by prominent developers to enhance attractions and amenities within Genting Highlands, it is becoming an increasingly desirable destination for both residents and visitors alike. This may further contribute to heightened demand within the property sector.”

Ooi concurs. “The residential property market in Genting Highlands remains stable, with the transacted prices recorded for selected high-rise residential projects in the area posting a stable trend over the last five years.” (See Table 2.)

Activities on the hill

According to Khong’s research, recently launched and soon-to-be-launched developments include King’s Park by Yuk Tung Group and Highlands Park City Sdn Bhd; Pavilion Genting Highlands by Sering Manis Sdn Bhd (a joint venture of Global Oriental Bhd with 51% equity interest, Singapore ABR Holdings Ltd with 19%, and Dataran Hartajaya with 30%); Tropicana Grandhill by Tropicana Corp Bhd; and Genting Xintiandi by Genting Malaysia and Aset Kayamas.

Khong believes these large-scale projects will spark Genting Highlands’ lifestyle potential. He says their combined offerings will make Gohtong Jaya and Genting Highlands a top destination that allows one to live and play on the hill, and still be close enough to the city to work there.

He says in addition to these projects, other developers are also stamping their mark in the area.

“LBS Bina via its subsidiary Casa Inspirasi Sdn Bhd entered into an agreement with Perbadanan Setiausaha Kerajaan Pahang to acquire two pieces of land totalling about 310 acres in July 2022. They have already started launching the land in phases, offering bungalow lots, serviced apartments, 2-storey terraced houses, townhouses — in addition to schools and hospitals — with an estimated total gross development value exceeding RM9 billion.”

Khong adds that Hong Kong-based IBN Corp Ltd is developing IBN Highlands City on 20 acres of land.

genting highland theme park essay

A point of interest that he highlights is that most of the residential units that have been sold are furnished. In addition, local developers tend to partner short-term accommodation management companies to attract potential buyers and investors. He cites the example of Tropicana Corp engaging HostAStay for its Twin Pines Serviced Suites in Tropicana Grandhill.

Institutional investors have also entered the fray, with two investing in the ongoing Antara Genting Highlands developed by Aset Kayamas.

“Kanger International Bhd acquired 126 serviced apartments at Levels 30 to 45 in Tower A for RM142.87 million on Feb 24, 2021, and Harvest Miracle Capital Bhd acquired 187 serviced apartments on various levels in Tower A for RM246.35 million on April 28, 2022,” Khong informs.

He observes that wellness and medical care offered by the projects can be developed into medical tourism.

“On record, Malaysia attracted 850,000 healthcare travellers, contributing RM1.3 billion in revenue in 2022, according to Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council. In its latest statement, revenue surpassed RM900 million and is estimated to reach RM1.7 billion by the end of 2023.

genting highland theme park essay

“This medical angle has been taken by Tropicana Grandhill, which offers a wellness hub, and King’s Park featuring hospital and wellness facilities in the development. This again will further stimulate development demand here.”

He also believes that the cool weather and natural environment make Genting Highlands ideal for another niche industry, senior living.

Developers in Genting Highlands face more than just high construction and development costs.

“One of the primary challenges is to enhance the attractiveness of the highland area and increase demand for accommodation and commercial activities during the non-peak season,” says CBRE | WTW’s Tan.

“Another aspect involves evaluating utility capacity, such as ensuring sufficient water supply for daily visitor requirements and minimising any adverse impact that may arise from construction activities on the surrounding environment.

genting highland theme park essay

“Recently, there have been safety concerns in Genting, particularly regarding landslides and traffic accidents. The mountainous location has made it vulnerable to landslides, with several incidents occurring in recent years. Additionally, due to its popularity as a tourist destination, the high volume of traffic on the roads leading to and from Genting Highlands has resulted in frequent accidents.

“Efforts are being made by the government and Resorts World Genting to address safety concerns in Genting. One of these measures involves enhancing infrastructure, including the upgrading of roads and drainage systems. These improvements aim to minimise potential hazards such as landslides and accidents. It is also paramount for developers to obtain an Environment Impact Assessment prior to launching their development,” Tan adds.

Knight Frank’s Ooi says that in addition to higher construction costs because of land elevation, the risk of landslides requires the building of retaining walls as well as good drainage, among other things.

The buildings must also have earthquake-resistant designs, which may be costly and increase the construction cost, he adds.

“Then there is limited access as there is only one major highway to and from Genting Highlands, which is the Genting Sempah–Genting Highlands Highway. The road experiences traffic congestion during peak hours. Its altitude has also deterred people from staying there for the long term, apart from those who work there.”

genting highland theme park essay

Ooi says safety issues such as landslides and road accidents require immediate attention. To prevent a recurrence of a disaster like the December 2022 landslide in Batang Kali, he says ground area requires covering and surface drainage water must be redirected. In addition, tilt sensors should be installed to monitor ground movement.

As for mitigating road accidents, he suggests: “For night-time safety features, there should be more raised reflective pavement markers on the road, warning signs pertaining to foggy environments and warning signs to road users about accident-prone areas. Having adequate emergency escape ramps will also enable vehicles that are having issues with their car brake system to stop safely.”

For Savills’ Khong, the biggest challenges for developers are the construction cost of both infrastructure (water, electricity, roads, hill slopes and terraces, retaining walls and others) and building activities on the hill slopes. He points out that the landslide at Batang Kali was not due to development in the area and as such should not be linked to Genting Highlands.

“In Genting Highlands itself, road and slope maintenance is done diligently and consistently by Resorts World Genting to ensure all smallish problems with regard to the basic infrastructure and hill slope are well attended to and substantial funds are used to ensure this for the safety of visitors.”

With all these developments going on, is Genting Highlands being overbuilt? Property experts do not believe this is the case.

genting highland theme park essay

“Multiple factors must be considered when evaluating the extent of development in Genting Highlands such as the reliance on tourists to support activities due to the limited population within the resort itself,” says Tan.

“However, generally, the outlook for the real estate market in Genting Highlands is optimistic. The tourist resort town is highly sought after by visitors, leading to demand for various types of accommodation and properties in the area.

“Furthermore, the ongoing development of new attractions and amenities in Genting Highlands by prominent developers enhances its appeal as both a residential area and a destination for tourists, potentially resulting in an increased demand for properties.”

For Ooi, Genting Highlands requires careful planning considering that most developments will have to contend with slopes and different land gradients.

“Genting Highlands falls under Environmentally Sensitive Areas (KSAS). KSAS aims to create a balance between development and environmental protection. KSAS’s standard operating procedure for any development within Genting Highlands will require intensive and comprehensive planning and involve various levels of technical expertise. Intensive development planning is also necessary to mitigate the risks of overbuilding and may lead to higher development costs and a longer development period.

genting highland theme park essay

“The reopening of the remaining hotel room inventory in Resorts World Genting, the increase in [Genting] SkyWorlds’ ride capacity and extended operating hours will increase footfall by about 10% at the hilltop as there is good demand and more rooms being made available.

“The outlook for the rest of the year remains weak but [we are] optimistic of a recovery from improved footfall. It is expected that growth will continue to be supported by domestic demand. International travel demand is expected to remain positive, although its recovery could be constrained by macroeconomic uncertainties and inflationary pressures.

“The regional gaming market is expected to continue improving in tandem with the improved outlook on global travel. The near-term outlook of the leisure and hospitality industry in Genting Highlands remains cautiously optimistic,” Ooi adds.

Khong believes Genting Highlands will be able to realise its potential if development is aligned with the objective of creating a sustainable environment for all.

“There are a lot of developments coming to Genting Highlands and the developers must turn these offerings into demand, where actual purchasers come to reside in them or buy up units to be made their second home where they come in during the weekends.

“Creating more entertainment parks in the locality will encourage tourists-cum-visitors to extend their stay here, enhancing average occupancy throughout the week and not solely on the weekends.

“I believe the development potential of Genting Highlands is strong and the current development trend in the hill is encouraging. It basically ticks all the boxes for a good ‘live, work and stay’ concept and [has] the unique selling propositions of hilltop views, setting and short distance from KL,” he adds.
